ALPHABETICAL TOPIC LISTING IS VERY HELPFUL. I like to learn Spanish words as fast as possible and so do my students. Every week I use 10 cognates from this book as a quiz. It's fun to hear some of the guesses that are made. This book is a good and quick vocabulary builder.

5 out of 5 stars Best In Show 100 years and counting.......2004-12-04

As another reviewer put it, this is quite simply the only definitive Sanskrit-English dictionary. The monumental feat of scholarship required to compile this resource is staggering to imagine. It has completely answered every query for which I have consulted it and deserves 5 stars for this fact alone.

Nonetheless, it delivers in several other ways. The organization, which admittedly takes some getting used to due to such counterintuitives as the dual alphabetical ordering of the anusvara, turns out to be an extremely effective way of improving vocabulary because it groups several derivatives and compounds under their basic roots. Connections to other Indo-European cognates has the side effect of creating a work that is a valuable linguistic reference outside of ancient Indian studies.

It is extremely comprehensive in certain entries, perhaps indeed encyclopaedaic as another reviewer mentioned, but this has its benefits. Sometimes readers need more background information on deceptively complex terms than provided in a particular piece of literature where the word is found, because the author assumes that his readers already possess this knowledge.

As to the end product of the mammoth undertaking that this must have been for Monier-Williams, I have no complaints. This is what I expect of any "final authority" reference.

2 out of 5 stars Dictionary with an agenda........2003-07-15

Useful as a quick reference because the entries are primarily in Roman script with diacritics, rather than Devanagari. Some of the entries, specifically those connected with scientific views, are outdated as they are subject to the scientific understanding of the time.

What bothers me more, however, is the motivation of Monier-Williams for creating the dictionary and the possible influence that may have had on its accuracy. Often referred to as "a lover of India," Monier-Williams himself shows a different side of his interest in India. In 'Modern India and Indians', p. 247. he writes: "When the walls of the mighty fortress of Brahmanism are encircled, undermined and finally stormed by the soldiers of cross, the victory of Christianity must be signal and complete." And in the preface of this very dictionary he writes: "I must draw attention to the fact that I am only the second occupant of the Boden Chair, and that its founder, Col. Boden, stated most explicitly in his will (dated Aug. 15,1811) that special object of his munificent bequest was to promote the translation of the scriptures into Sanskrit; so as to enable his countrymen to proceed in the conversion of the natives of India to the Christian Religion."

I find it hard to believe that this kind of attitude lays a proper foundation for an objective approach to the creation of a dictionary, and want to caution the reader to bear this in mind when using it.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best.......2003-05-09

The Monier-Williams Sanskrit Dictionary is one of the heaviest books I own. If you are working in any field related to Indolology or Indian linguistics, you need it - it is the best by far. In every entry you feel that Monier-Williams spoke Sanskrit and loved India - a wonderful book, you can spend hours just browsing in it. The Monier-William and Platt's Urdu, Classical Hindi and English Dictionary represent the apex of British Indological Scholarship. A digital edition would be extremely useful...

2 out of 5 stars Encyclopedia not Dictionary.......2002-11-30

I remember having this book a few years ago, but I did not keep it for a long time.

Besides the poor print quality and the fact that the entries are not in the alphabetical order, so that a beginner in Sanskrit has hard time finding their words, I did not like it for two other reasons:

    1. There are so many abbreviations that most of the time it was very difficult to tell them apart from the actual translation, especially in the case of some short words or words with multiple meanings. You get something like: abbr., abbr., abbr., abbr., word, abbr., abbr., abbr., word, abbr., abbr., abbr., abbr., word, abbr., abbr., abbr., and try to find a word inside.

    2. There is too much information not really belonging to a dictionary. For example in the entry about Krishna there is a whole story recounted about Krishna, his childhood, his life and exploits. This is not what I expect from a dictionary. In the one I use now (Woerterbuch Sanskrit-Deutsch, Langenscheidt) one can find that Krishna is: I adj., black, II Name of a hero, later of a god identified with Vishnu, (and a few more meanings amounting to only 8 lines of explanations). This is all I expect from a dictionary.

So, if you do not mind spending half an hour (or more), looking up one word, this dictionary is OK. I minded and this book found a place in the local library. It was simply unmanageable.

    3 out of 5 stars Two points.......2000-12-11

    1. The majority of words in this dictionary are provided in transliteration and a minority are additionally in devanagari script. This is a drawback as it requires learning of the transliteration conventions, it makes spotting words more difficult, and is a distraction all round.

This compendium is probably one of the most complete one is likely to come across and was the magnum opus of Arthur Waite. It can be rather arcane in its explanations, but it is not meant to be light reading, but rather a definitive work. In this Waite certainly succeeds.

This book is full of a lot of info. and a must have for all masons. I found that it helped me through my degree work as I became a mason..

4 out of 5 stars Freemasonry's Alpha and Omega Resource Book.......2006-08-04

A New Encyclopedia Of Freemasonry may just be the best pure resource work on the subject today. This is not your typical Freemasonic expose where someone sells-out the fraternity. Come here looking for handshakes, passwords, rituals and secrets, hoping to catch Freemasons at play, and you'll be bitterly disappointed. This is not the cheap seats, so don't expect any home-run balls to come soaring in.

Besides, this is no easy read by no means. This work is clearly written for scholars and veterans of the craft, with a charitable appeal to beginning Freemasons truly aspiring to learn as much as they can, so it is, therefore, an invaluable resource tool for both constituencies; but I nevertheless recommend it too, for sincerely curious outsiders. There is something here of interest for everyone's level, even though the book is not for everyone.

This is Freemasonry from A to Z, and everything allegedly associated with it directly or indirectly--from A to Z. It is an extremely comprehensive layout of Freemasonry, Secret societies, and Religious doctrine. And whether or not all three of these subjects should be grouped in this one tome or any tome, for that matter, I cannot say (and surely wouldn't if I could). But then, when you speak of Freemasonry, and you know what you're talking about....oh so many subjects come to mind--depending on who you're talking to.

    5 out of 5 stars A must have for a Freemason.......2006-06-27

This is a must have for any freemason. This is a comprehensible reference of almost all masonic and related definitions. It is extremely helpful to have it handy when reading masonic articles.

4 out of 5 stars Careful with those cognates!.......2004-02-04

False cognates are words that look the same in English and Spanish but the meaning in each language is completely different. I cannot comment on the usage of false cognates by Spanish speakers learning English but everyday I hear cognates used by English speakers learning Spanish and the intended meaning is completely skewed due to lack of knowing the correct word or assuming that word means the same in both languages. Without consulting the book many come to mind. For example: "Effective" in English is "eficaz" in Spanish and not "efectivo" as I often hear. "Efectivo" in Spanish means "cash". "Sensitive" in Spanish is "sensible" and not "sensato" which ironically means sensible. Those two words always challenge students. A list of words like my examples is detailed in this handy manual. It explains the meaning of the cognate in both languages with examples. If you are conscious about speaking Spanish correctly this reference will help you achieve your goal. It not exhaustive but it certainly should be a part of students library of Spanish references.

5 out of 5 stars Pre-eminent Dictionary of its type.......2005-04-07

Sir Monier Monier Williams work is definitely the classic book of it's kind. In some respects, the work here has been surpassed by other references, but it has never been out-classed. In a rather perverse way, the Process of looking up a Sanskrit word gets easier as you know the word you are looking for in the book. This is hard to articulate given the nature of the Sanskrit language, so in a real sense , you need a range of other books as well as this dictionary; these would include, a Verbal Root book, a Classical grammer[sp?], as well as a Mediaeval grammer, since many popular texts come from the so-called mediaeval period... viz., the PURANAS.
So, in this respect it is a circular method that really necessitates a learning by rote method, until you can participate in that circle.
So, with Singular, Dual, and plural forms in either Parasmaipada, or Atmanepada, you have your work cut out for you, especially with 8 cases in most words.
Anyways, well worth the cost at this price.

      Book Description

The Okinawan-English Wordbook, written by the late Mitsugu Sakihara, historian and native speaker of the Naha dialect of Okinawa, is an all-new concise dictionary of the modern Okinawan language with definitions and explanations in English. The first substantive Okinawan-English lexicon in more than a century, it represents a much-needed addition to the library of reference materials on the language. The Wordbook opens to lay user and linguist alike an area heretofore accessible almost exclusively in Japanese works and adds to the general body of scholarship on various Ryukyuan languages and dialects by providing a succinct but comprehensive picture of modern colloquial Okinawan.

The Okinawan language as recorded in the Wordbook is that of the inhabitants of the southern third of the main island of the Ryukyuan archipelago, which stretches southwest from the Japanese island of Kyushu toward Taiwan. It melds the gentry language of the old capital, Shuri, with the popular language of commercial Naha and the various localisms of other villages of southern Okinawa. It is also the heritage language of substantial communities descended from emigrants to Hawaii, South America, and elsewhere in the past century. The current work comprises nearly 10,000 entries, many with encyclopedic discussion, drawn from a wide variety of sources in addition to the author's native knowledge and from numerous areas of interest, with emphasis on the cultural traditions of Okinawa. Entries reflect both contemporary Naha usage and archaisms and areal variants when these are of cultural, historical, or linguistic interest. Thus, in addition to being a comprehensive portrait of the modern Okinawan language, the Wordbook serves as an implicit introduction to the rich field of Japanese dialect studies.

Prefatory material discusses the phonology of Okinawan and the romanization scheme employed in the book, with particular attention to phonological features of the language likely to be unfamiliar to native English speakers and those acquainted only with Japanese. A general introduction to the conjugation of verbs and adjectives in Okinawan is made as well.

      Book Description

Take an enchanting tour through the tangled roots of English

Quick, what is the common denominator of the following words: onion, twinkle, travel, squad, foist, semester, October, noon, and dicker? By the time you finish reading Dubious Doublets, the answer will be as obvious to you as the relationship between lettuce and galaxy, nostril and thrill, or witch and vegetable!

This surprising, enlightening, and entertaining guide uses a delightfully innovative approach to explore the evolution, lineage, and proliferation of words. Beginning with pairs of seemingly unrelated modern English words-dubious doublets-the author traces them back through the millennia to reveal not only their common roots, but also the living thoughts that form the true links between these improbable pairs.

You'll discover, for example, why the words flamenco and flamingo are both related to the complexions of the Dutch, how the biblical son of Isaac is related to a French garment and a Halloween decoration, and what going berserk has to do with playing hopscotch. You'll also uncover the common roots of such seemingly incompatible dyads as bully/friar, muscle/mouse, and everyone's favorite, feather/hippopotamus.

Richly supplemented with cultural anecdotes, literary excerpts, and lively discussions on a broad variety of relevant topics-not to mention a series of whimsical illustrations that offer intriguing clues to word origins-Dubious Doublets is, quite simply, a word buff's delight.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Edelstein serves up a feast of wordplay for us all.......2003-10-03

I got this book at a reading by the author, whose enthusiasm for his subjecct was infectious. I was also enchanted by James Grashow's whimsical woodcut illustration on the cover--a mauve hippopotomus doing a feathery fan dance. The illustrations beckon us into Edelstein's etymological digs into the shared parentage of strange doublets--hippopotomus and feather being just two. Both words stem from the Indo-European #pet- (as well as the suffixed form "pet-ra,")meaning "to rush, fly." With a light touch, Edelstein flies through feather's line derived from the Greek "pteron" (feather or wing) through the Jurassic Age archeopteryx, pen (as in,quill), penne (pasta shaped like a quill); then rushes us on to pinnacle, panache, petulant, impetus, perpetual, compete, repeat, appetite, and get this, symptom. But, he asks, "how does the massive, slow-moving hippopotamus, which has absolutely no sense of panache and certainly can't fly, join the family of rushing and flying words? The answer is not in the 'hippo' but in the rushing water where it thrives. Greek 'potamos' means 'river,' originally 'rushing water.' Greek 'hippos' means 'horse.' Literally, a hippopotamus is a 'horse in rushing water.' Hippos rarely wander far from water, where they feed on water plants and share vegetation, feel buoyant, and stay cool."

All this information in a single page of text!

But the book is not just a trip through the meandering geography of our language. Edelstein has unpacked th treasures words have gleaned from their travels, and he entertains us with their tales. Think of gods, muses, royalty, clergy, soldiers, maids, barbarians, Romans, Greeks, French, Germans,Americans all sharing a common table, swapping stories, jokes and wordplay and you get some idea of this book. It's rich Epicurean fare packaged as small tastes--tapas, perhaps. And, it is a comfortable book, cozy in the hands with a soft cover; light enough to carry in a backpack or purse (which I do); with clear operating instructions (doublets are in alpha order). Erudite but friendly, Edelstein's Dubious Doublets might be construed as Pooh's take on the Oxford English Dictionary. For me, it's become a pal.5

5 out of 5 stars Delightful and Enlightening.......2003-07-08

Anyone interested in words will find this book to be delightful and enlightening. Stewart Edelstein has taken many unlikely pairs of words and traces them back to reveal their common, often surprising roots. For example, he pairs "gazebo" and "placebo." A gazebo is a structure, he explains, which affords an enjoyable view. A placebo is a substance with no real effect. What do these words have in common? Expectation, we learn. Then we learn about the history and the early recorded uses of the words. The book is filled with discussions of such "dubious doublets"-- which provides the book's title-- from "aardvark" and "procelain" to "canary" and "cynic" to "salacious" and "salmon" to "dentist" and "dandelion," and many, many more. Dubious Doublets is a delightful read, filled with erudition and humor. And it is accessible to people who, like me, have never really studied word origins. It is beautifully and humorously illustrated. It would make a fine gift for writers, people interested in language, or people who enjoy words games. It can be read in small doses or in large portions, depending on one's mood. I heartily recommend it.
