Love this book.......2007-06-20
I have several asl dictionaries and this is my favorite. It doesn't have a lot of signs kids like, but this one along with the Galludet dictionary gives you what you need. Sometimes the Galludet dictionary pictures are vauge about movement or hand placement, but Random House has full descriptions along with pics.
And it's MUCH smaller then Galludet so I'm able to take it places. A must have!
really good illustrations.......2007-03-14
I got this book to use for a sign language ministry that I do. It has really good illustrations as well as descriptions of how to do the sign & reasoning for many of the signs. I found it extremely useful. There are very few words that I have needed that weren't in this book.
Excellent Resource.......2006-11-12
The ASL dictionary is a wonderful resource for people learning ASL. I am a fourth year student and a 2nd year interpreter for my local church, and I use this dictionary as a refresher, just reading through it. I definitely recommend it, even though it does contain some English, outdated, and local signs. The best way to learn is contact with YOUR local deaf community.
I also recommend "American Sign Language The Easy Way" by David Stewart
and "American Sign Language Dictionary Unabridged" by Martin L. Sternberg

Good price for a used book.......2007-10-03
Book was noticeably used but was in readable condition and will be used for a while. Arrived in timely manner.
A handy guide to have around.......2007-07-03
I am fairly new to ASL, and I find this fairly easy to use. While no means comprehensive, it does have a number of signs you will probably need in your daily life. While it does use drawings, it also tells the user what handshapes to use and how to move them. At the back is the alphabet and numerals.
I don't think this should be someone's only guide to ASL, but it is a good supplement to carry with you to practice.
Communication bonus.......2006-08-15
We have an employee that was born deaf. He has been to the best schools for the deaf available in this area since he was a child. I would consider him an expert at the different sign languages and also lip reading. When he looked at this book he let me know that it was very good with up to date signs and easy to understand examples. I ordered three copies for use at work and one for him. This book has at least 4500 signs. He explained that he knew over 3000 signs but couldn't possibly know or remember them all. This is a great reference for all of us. A real communication bonus.
Awesome ASL Dictionary!.......2006-07-15
I love this book. It's actually my 2nd copy. I have been teaching my 2 year old hearing son ASL since he was 3 months old. I'm forever going to this dictionary to look up a new word. It is really comprehensive. There have only been a few times I haven't found a word I was looking for.
One thing I don't like is the paper in this printing of the book. It is more like newspaper print. The original one I bought is white paper. It does make a difference.
I like this book also for the pictures. They are pretty easy to understand.
Along with my Signing Time videos and one online ASL dictionary, this is one of my top favorite ASL resourses.
I recommend to everyone & have even bought as a babyshower gift.
Please don't hesitate to buy this book if you need an ASL reference!!!
Useful, but not as perfect as I'd hoped........2006-06-10
For some time, we've had some flash cards and a small book containing signs to teach our son, who is nearly 1 1/2. I found the little book and cards to be frustrating for multiple reasons. The flash cards get out of alphabetical order easily, so it's hard to look something up; and there are only about 50-60 signs featured in each set. Words that my son would really like to be able to express, like "light" and "fan" and "otter" and "frog," are missing. Additionally, some of the words from the book and flash cards overlap, but the two formats disagree about what the signs are!
So, based on the reviews and on the number of signs included, I couldn't wait to get the Random House Webster's Concise American Sign Language Dictionary. The book does have a lot going for it. If you know the alphabet in sign language (and it's included in the book, in case you don't), the descriptions of signs really help clarify the illustrations. As soon as we got the book, I looked up "light" and "frog," and I was delighted to be able to sign them to my son. Catching my excitement, he signed "light" back right away. But "otter" was missing from the dictionary. "Well," I thought, "maybe there is no sign for 'otter.'" No huge loss, since my son does an endearing otter impression anyway.
But then I discovered that "fan" has also been left out of the dictionary. "Fan" is a pretty basic and common word, so I assume that there is a specific sign for it.
Examples of words that ARE included: ascend, delegate, optimistic, sightseeing, humid, dominoes, rehabilitation, sterilization, robot, sacrifice, slavery, porpoise, hawk, pimples, zap, worship, prostitute, puzzle, diamond, lesbian, loiter, merchandise.
Examples of words that AREN'T included: otter, squash, fan, beaver, whale, moose, ceiling, kaleidoscope, owl, crow, robin, quail, raven, tiger, zebra, wolf, coyote, tractor, mow, guava, tortilla, quesadilla, spinach, wheel, cactus, cardinal.
Being able to say words like "rehabilitation" is definitely useful; it would take a long time to spell them out. But I think I probably talk about fans more often than I talk about robots. This is a self-proclaimed concise dictionary, and there is a note at the beginning of the book about which words were included and which words weren't (and why), but that still doesn't help me sign "squash" or "moose."
I don't know that anyone cares, but the copy of this book that we received does have a slightly different cover than the one pictured. The picture shows hands in a single sign, whereas our book features five full-color photos of a woman signing. I actually like the one we got better than the one pictured.
Oh, and previous reviews indicate that the alphabet and numbers are listed in the back of the book. Numbers are still at the back of the book, but each letter of the alphabet now appears at the start of the section of words beginning with that letter.
Overall, I was torn between giving the book three stars and four. I really like the descriptions of how to do signs, but that only helps when the word I want to sign is in the dictionary.

Customer Reviews:
I love this book!.......2007-02-18
The size of this book won me over. It is very easy to take along for travel in the car, briefcase, or bigger purse. The illustrations are very clear, and the selection of sign definitions is extensive.
Wonderful Reference Book.......2006-11-10
The book is everything I needed. It is easy to use and easy to carry. The illustrations are good.
Great Resource for learning ASL for yourself or your babies.......2006-06-25
I have this book, my only hesitation and reason for the 4 star rating is that it looks different from the one that I have, I like the way mine looks much better and if it looked like this purple one I probably wouldn't have bought it.
Mine is gold and has a black stripe that goes horizontally across the whole cover.
I like this book because it is very small and concise which I need because I am using it for baby sign language and I need to reference it a lot to learn/remember signs that we are using, one thing that bothered me a little bit was the lack of words needed to communicate 'bathroom activities' with baby, like number one and number two for instance. I was able to find those online though.
Good pocket dictionary!!.......2002-04-13
I recomend this pocket dictionary for fast access to the signs to express more than 1000 common concepts. Practical for have always near when learning the most frequent used words in ASL.

important tool.......2007-05-30
This book is invaluable for anyone in the medical field who wants to communicate in sign. The medical term is defined and then how to sign the word is described in words as well as illustrated in diagrams. The diagrams are fairly easy to follow even if you aren't very good at translating things into three dimensions from 2 dimensions. I am very glad I bought this book.
Random House Webster's American Sign Language Medical Dictionary.......2007-01-19
It came as promised and in a timely manner.
Terminology you need to know!.......2001-05-31
I have been impressed with Elaine Costello's previous dictionary, so when I heard this book was out I was ready for something great! She did not disappoint. This book uses medical terminology to provide signed translations. I have found these to be very helpful. (In fact it helped me to understand the medical terminology better through the use of signs!) I think this is a must have for any interpreter, and beneficial for many deaf people.

just wish to say this is the most complete dictionary for computers I find and is quite good. I recommend the others Elaine has done also. I never have any problems with her work/publishings
A great book.......2003-11-03
Anyone who communicates with the Deaf about technical things or the internet will need a dictionary like this one. I'm a sign language interpreter and often find myself consulting this dictionary, especially now-a-days. Internet, Modem and email are easy, but what about Digital, Analog and Format? This book, along with Costello's other dictionaries (legal, medical) are a must have for interpreters.

Customer Reviews:
Not As Great As Expected.......2007-03-16
I admit it. I'm not a big fan of Elaine Costello. It seems to be that a lot of the signs in this book are English...not ASL. Of course, there aren't that many books out there about legal sign language, so it is helpful to a point. Just make sure before you start using the signs that they are true ASL signs and not Signed English.
