Book Description

• Clearly written and easily understandable by the lay reader.
• Thoroughly researched: author's points are backed by references in the writings of acknowledged scholars.
• Special features of the book: lavishly illustrated with multiple images in each illustration that show at a glance the mythic themes paralleling the bible.

This book demonstrates that the stories and themes of the Bible were part of the great mythic systems of the ancient world by u sing comparative mythology, tell tale verses in the Bible and archaeology. The abstract God of modern monotheistic Judaism, Christianity and Islam is a comparatively recent creation. In later times the myth of a messianic deliverer was combined with that of the pagan god-man who suffered a horrible, excruciating death but was physically resurrected to produce the Christ myth.

3 out of 5 stars Secret Origins of the Bible.......2007-08-24

This is a very detailed look at the Bible with the author trying to match the Bible passages with history and his findings of the origins. It is very detailed and comprehensive. I know that some people really prefer that and so to them I say this is a very good book, it would also probably be a good book if you were going to write a paper on the subject. I'm still trying from time to time to read portions of it, but it is not for me, at least, a page turner.

5 out of 5 stars Excellen read.......2007-01-23

This book is great if you have questions about the orgins of the bible and how it was put together. It was well written and I was able to get through it in 3 days. Aftr a day of thinking about it I decided to go through it again and I am still gaining insight to the bible.

5 out of 5 stars Compelling Arguments.......2006-09-26

Tim Callahan's stated intention for writing this book was to dissuade fundamentalists from using the Bible as a source of knowledge concerning modern ethical questions and controversies. He succeeds in doing so as he brilliantly uncovers the hidden meanings of various Biblical stories that were later covered up by editors from rival traditions. This book not only traces the origin of basic Christian and Jewish beliefs concerning the afterlife, judgment, and the messiah to its less than divine roots--it also shows that the roots of these modern religions were startlingly different from what they have branched out into today. His book is completely focused, as well, rarely straying from the point and sometimes belaboring arguments to such a degree that they simply become unassailable. After reading this book, it is virtually impossible to read the Bible in the same naive way that most people will read it, and the message that the compilers and editors of these stories expect us to come away with is shown in many cases to be contrary to what the original documents actually implied.

In discussing the Bible, Callahan relies upon archaology, comparative mythology, internal contradictions, history, and even linguistics to discern when and for what purpose the various documents composing it were written. He does an admirable job arguing in favor of the Documentary hypothesis, which entails that the Bible is a conglomeration of many different documents with differing perspectives and motives that were joined together with the help of later editing. His remarks claiming that Yaweh and other Biblical heroes are actually Sun gods, fertility gods, and so on are also very convincing.

All in all, Callahan succeeds in painting a picture of the Bible as a hodge-podge mixture of various rival documents rather poorly woven together to give the appearance of a single manuscript. The book also succeeds in showing that ancient Judaism and Christianity were far removed from their modern equivalents in terms of the content of their beliefs, as belief in monotheism, god's omnipotence and moral perfection, ethics-centered religion, and divine judgment are shown to be later developments in the history of religious thought, and not ideas originally proclaimed within the Bible.

5 out of 5 stars Well-Established Myths Altered to Match EvolvingTheology.......2006-06-24

Callahan blends an encyclopedic knowledge of mythology with the well-known Documentary Hypothesis for his analysis of the Old Testament.

Here's the short version of the DH: "J" wrote stories representative of South Judean interests. "E" wrote the same story reflecting Northern Israel's interests. When the North and South united, the Priests in charge could not get rid of either well known document, so he (they) wrote "P," making the story more to his (their) liking. King Josiah "took charge" at age 8. Because of his age, he was heavily influenced by the priests. After he attained adulthood, the main priest conveniently found "D" (mainly a set of laws) which so impressed the young king, he had the whole tome read aloud to the masses.

All these sources and editions were put together by an editor, called the "Redactor" into the final 5-book work.

Evidence for this elaborate theory consists of differences in linguistics, terminology, content, narrative flow, connections with other parts of the Bible, relationships among the sources to each other and to history, and convergence (several different lines of evidence converge). When each source is read individually, the continuity improves in a striking fashion. Where would you find a Bible coded in this way? Easy! Buy the Bible translated and color coded by sources in "The Bible with Sources Revealed," by Friedman.

The theory was conceived in the late 1800's, developed and added to by numerous scholars. Julius Wellhausen's compiled model of the source documents came to be known as the Documentary Hypothesis.

Callahan's book ends with eighty-eight pages of New Testament analysis, drawing heavily from a book I've also read, "Gospel Fictions," by Helms. By rules of court accepted evidence, none of the gospels can be believed as anything other than myth and fiction. Evidence from secular literature consists of questionable barely mentioned entries by Josephus (90CE), Tacitus (120CE), and Suetonius (150CE). It's probable that a teacher named Jesus did exist, did offend the Romans by upsetting some Jewish leaders, and was crucified. The rest was undoubtedly fabrication and re-cycling of Old Testament stories and myths by well-meaning early believers.

Comment: Callahan is so thorough, in most instances of investigation, the casual reader will get more information than he wants. He has a take-no-prisoners attitude about his conclusions: fundamentalists (if any got this far in this review) beware!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding, well researched book.......2005-12-30

Mr. Callahan has compiled an impressive amount of information into an excellent and objective study of the Bible and its antecedents. He exhibits ample knowledge of many subject areas which are necessary to understanding where the Bible and all the stories contained therein originated. Not surprisingly to anyone who has more than topical knowledge of world mythologies, most of the Biblical stories are rooted in age old myths and traditions, and thus cannot rightly be classified as "unique." Mr. Callahan further points out many of the inconsistencies, inaccuracies, and absurdities found in the Bible, implicitly making a strong point that the Bible cannot possibly be the word of an infallible God.

Callahan's chapters on the Gospels are especially illuminating, as these are the biblical books with which Christians are most familiar. Callahan demonstrates clearly that, while the story of Jesus Christ may have been rooted in some kernal of truth, much was added after the fact, including the critically important resurrection, to shoehorn him into ancient prophecies. Most of the work of the Gospel writers was exceedingly clumsy, demonstrating clear historical, geographical, and logical errors, but with the obvious intent to turn Jesus into the long-awaited Messiah predicted by the Old Testament prophets.

No Christian who has devoted his or her life to the teachings of the Bible should pass up reading this book. Many will avoid it because they don't want to riddle their intact faith with doubts and questions, but of what value is any belief that cannot withstand critical scrutiny? Certainly not worth one's lifelong dedication. I hope Christians will read this book carefully, and if they are not satisfied with the research, facts presented, or conclusions drawn, do further research to answer those questions so they can be satisfied that whatever beliefs they wind up with at the end of the day are well grounded.

All that being said, I would agree with one reviewer who criticized Callahan's tendency to speculate over the meaning of certain vague or simply incomprehensible biblical passages. It is generally unnecessary and usually distracting. Nevertheless, there is no doubt that Callahan has done his homework and come up with a very important (if misleadingly titled, for none of this information is "secret") book that is more relevant today than ever.

It was good. I liked it because they spent time together and with
their grandmother.

5 out of 5 stars The Callahan Cousins.......2006-01-02

The sequel to `The Callahan Cousins, Summer Begins', is `The Callahan Cousins, Home Sweet Home". This book is just as good as the first one.
It is full of adventure, mystery, and some sadness.
The book is about the three Callahan cousins, Hilary, Kate, Neeve, and Phoebe and a few of their adventures on Gull Island; on of which their Grandma Gee, ownes twelve acres of land on.
One of the cousins, Neeve, finds some disturbing information about her family on the island during their stay. All through the book she is trying to find more information.
The four cousins also have a task put in front of them from Gee, decorating a sort of second home down the hill from the house, that they call, `the Dorm'.
The girls are very excited and Phoebe, the most inteligent of the four, emidiatly starts taking notes and writes down the supplies they need.
Recently the cousins made a weird kind of friendship with their enemy, Sloan Bicket. Now, Sloan has invited them to a party. When the cousins see her at the sailing clinic the next day, Sloan is acting as bossy and mean as ever.
Later in the book, Hilary, Kate, Phobe, and Neeve, find out why Sloan always acts so two-faced.
All of the Callahan cousins solve their problems by the end of the book.
I liked this book because it seemed so realistic, a very adventurous read. This book is definatly up there in the top ten.

4 out of 5 stars A wonderful book!.......2005-12-29

The Callahan Cousins: Home Sweet Home is the sequel to The Callahan Cousins: Summer Begins. In this adventure the four Callahan cousins: Neeve, Kate, Hillary and Phoebe--are spending the summer at their grandmother's estate on Gull Island where their grandmother Gee has given them free rein to refurbish and move into the Dorm (guesthouse).

While The Callahan Cousins: Summer Begins is Hillary's tale, this book is told from the Neeve's perspective.

Neeve and Kate have differing opinions about the redecorating of the Dorm. Both girls want control of the Dorm's decor. When the four cousins begin to search the main house's attic for items that can be used in their new digs, Neeve discovers a wedding photo of her father and a woman who is not her mother. Neeve is shocked and hides the photo from her cousins.

The cousins are invited to mean-spirited Sloan's house (she lives on Gull Island year round) for a sleepover. The cousins accept the invitation with the thought that they would seek revenge on Sloan because she insulted two of the cousins. Gee learns of their plans and firmly instructs that they are not to seek their revenge.

While at the sleepover, Neeve discovers some photographs that further shock her and she is forced to trade the cosmetics she's collected all over the world for them. Neeve's cousins know something is bothering Neeve but she won't confide her worries. She believes her father was married to another woman, and after overhearing an adult conversation, wonders if he might have been responsible for his first wife's death? And does he have other children that she is not aware of?

Family secrets are eventually explained, relationships are sorted out and the books end is satisfying for all.

Armchair Interviews says: The Callahan Cousins: Home Sweet Home is a delightful story of family, friendship and sticking together and trusting your loved ones. In an era where Young Adult novels tend toward the dark and gritty, this novel is a breath of fresh air. It's a fast, fun and interesting read. And it has a strong moral compass. And who doesn't want their children to read books with a positive message!

5 out of 5 stars A fresh and fun addition to the Callahan Cousins series.......2005-09-24

In the sequel to THE CALLAHAN COUSINS #1: SUMMER BEGINS, the four Callahan cousins --- Neeve, Hillary, Kate and Phoebe --- are planning their move into their grandmother Gee's guesthouse, the Dorm. While the first book was truly Hillary's tale, this one is from the viewpoint of Neeve. Kate and Neeve squabble over the redecorating of the shabby area, both wanting to plan the new look. As the girls scout the attic searching for usable finds for their new lair, Neeve discovers a shocking old wedding photograph of her father --- but the bride is not her mother. Completely flabbergasted, Neeve hides the photo and doesn't mention it to anyone.

Sloan, the meanest girl on Gull Island, invites the cousins to a sleepover. When Sloan insults two of the cousins, Neeve talks the others into accepting the invitation with the plan of getting even somehow. But Gee gets wind of their revenge plan and squashes it.

The girls begin cleaning and painting the Dorm, planning to amaze Gee with a big unveiling of the freshly decorated guesthouse. Meanwhile, Gee delights the cousins by giving them driving lessons "just in case of an emergency."

Neeve discovers that Sloan has something that Neeve desires with her whole heart. She trades her case of exotic makeup without telling her cousins what she's trading for, which leaves them confused and worried.

The mystery surrounding the puzzling wedding photo deepens when Sloan cryptically mentions the girl in the pictures, adding that her mother says how sad it all ended, and that everyone on Gull Island was upset. Neeve is more anxious than ever. What is the story? Did her father do something wrong? Was he actually married before? Why wouldn't he tell her? Could he have other children?

An intriguing mystery, a fabulously cozy setting, and the friendship of "cousins forever" add up to another fresh, fun read in this series. If the conflicts are rather easily solved (as in the averted revenge scenario) and relationships/settings/meals tend to be just a bit too perfect, it all adds to the very high "escape reading" enjoyment factor.

The Callahan Cousins is a wounderful, new, edge-of-your-seat novel great for girls 9-12. The book is about four cousins the same age (12), who come to stay alone together with there Grandmother at an island over the summer. During which, they have TONS of adventures!
This is the second book of the series, and I really enjoyed it. I prefer the first book's plot, and I reccomend reading that first. Even so, I bought this book as soon as I could get my hands on it, read it the day I bought it (move over Nancy Drew - it's another edge-of-your-seat saga), then turned around and reread it. It's all-around fabulous!
The Callahan Cousins is a wounderful series for late elementary-schooled girls, possibly reaching up to middle. (I am a middle school girl myself.) It has no mature content, and it's fun to go along with the girls on their many cliff-hanging adventures! Also, girls will like the fact that it's realistic fiction, but has some points where you've got to believe it's untrue. Also, their Grandmother isn't overly involved in their stay, so it seems like the girls have the wonderful freedom they're set to have - under a protectful eye but not bombarded.
The Callahan Cousins will be a surefire hit with girls!

Book Description

This book is the culmination of all of Callahan's previous works and will certainly be his most popular book to date and a classic for years to come. Quite frankly, the author considers this his most important work ever, as he believes an understanding of paramagnetism — and its practical integration into farming — can save agriculture worldwide.

In this one, beautiful little book, Callahan lays out a lifetime of research into low-frequency forces in nature and his discoveries regarding the force of paramagnetism and the amazing effects it has upon soils, plants and people. Join Phil Callahan as schooling, research, life experiences, insight and inspiration come together for the benefit of humankind. Amply illustrated by the author.

4 out of 5 stars Another Great Book by Callahan.......2002-04-06

If you are growing anything in soil you should buy this book. As mentioned, Paramagnetism is Yang and Diamagnetism is Yin. Plants are diamagnetic, when measured on a paramagnetic meter, and require paramagnetic soil to be healthy and strong. Ultimately, paramagnetic material is usually silica based rock with small amounts of iron oxide (approx.12%). But not all iron oxide is paramagnetic. As explained in many of Callahan's books, paramagnetism is essential for the healthy growth of friendly bacteria and therefore crops. Do yourself a favour and educate yourself with this book and Nature's Silent Music also by Callahan

5 out of 5 stars Practical Application........1998-09-23

Green Gold has integrated the Callahan Recognitions with homeopathy, nutrition, and paramagnetic growing into a total approach to Houseplants, Gardening, Horticulture & Agriculture. We highly recommend buying this book, a small Green Gold houseplant formula, and watch this amazing book in action in your own home. Dr. Callahan's work is used extensively in sustainable natural growing circles. These principles have been used in China for milleniums and are know there as the Yen & the Yang and the Chi of Growing. The medical and agricultural applications are a major breakthrough and just waiting for global debut.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Love finding this new author.......2007-07-20

Between the Tides is my first novel by Patti Callahan Henry--and it won't be the last. I intend to devour them all. Her novels are `real life' stories with fully developed characters with problems experienced by many of us at one time or another. Her prose is lyrical and so vivid you actually visualize her settings and can smell the air and sea of the low country of South Carolina. I found myself rereading passages because they were so beautiful or because I found them profound in their simplicity.

Catherine Leary's father died and his last request was that his ashes be scattered in the Seaboro River in South Carolina. The last place Catherine wants to visit is her hometown and the Seaboro River. At age twelve her life changed following an accident she has always felt responsible for--and she doesn't want to revisit the intense pain.

Forrest Anderson, Catherine's former boyfriend and friend of her professor father, is writing a tribute to Catherine's father. To get a better feel of him and his life, Forrest intends to travel to Seaboro. Catherine doesn't want Forrest to expose her personal tragedy and accompanies him to her hometown in order to control his information.

The journey becomes more than Catherine anticipated as she learns things about her family, their friends and herself that she never knew. And along the way she reconnects with the life she loved and left and learns to love and forgive herself and others.

Armchair Interviews says: Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars warm character study .......2007-06-11

In Seaboro, South Carolina twelve year old Catherine "Cappy" Leary plays with the neighbors especially thirteen year old Boyd Loughlin. That is until Boyd's two year old brother Sam accidentally dies. Cappy blames herself after overhearing Boyd tells his mother she was watching Sam. At that time she did not know it, but her childhood ended; she did believe no good thing will come her way for the negligence death of little Sam.

Nine months have passed since her father died, but Catherine has failed to complete his final request. However, her father's protégé Forrest Anderson informs her he plans to honor her father in a memorial article he is writing. Catherine fears what he will learn in Seaboro so on her thirtieth birthday she returns to Seaboro for the first time since the tragedy that traumatized her. Her goals are to honor her late father by scattering his ashes as he requested and to prevent Forrest from revealing Leary family secrets though deep down in her soul she would not mind making new secrets with him.

BETWEEN THE TIDES is a warm character study of a woman that has spent two-thirds of her life believing her negligence led to the tragic death of infant Sam. and that led her to conclude that she is worthless. Her return to Seaboro to accomplish her two missions provides Cappy with an opportunity for a renewal of her spirit and a second chance to live life to the fullest and not in the shadows. Readers will enjoy this fine tale as the lead protagonist after eighteen years at ebb tide is relearning to enjoy the waves.

It takes a certain type to thrive in the cutthroat world of diamond dealing. Author Max Callahan is one who has, and in this book he shares the wisdom of his experience, from equipment requirements to essential industry jargon to what determines a stone's value, plus a revealing look at the cold, hard world of diamond smuggling.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Don't buy this if you are shopping for a diamond.......2003-07-04

This book is an interesting read and it provides a lot of background industry information and makes veiled allussions to diamond smuggling and diamond trafficking and maybe this book would be helpful to someone who is buying rough diamonds on the black market in Zaire (I doubt that anyone doing this would need the tidbits of wisdom that this book has to offer, it all seems like pretty basic stuff), but if you are looking for a diamond for that special someone, this book is of almost no use to you.

I bought this book thinking that it might contain a few tips on how I could buy diamonds at the insider price or maybe a few helpful hints on how to get a better deal or what sort of scams to look out for. I was wrong. Like I said -- an interesting read but ultimately not very useful.

This omnibus edition collects Spider Robinson's first three books about the Long Island bar that attracts the weirdest clientele and the tallest tales in the known universe. Callahan's Crosstime Saloon, Time Travelers Strictly Cash, and Callahan's Secret are playful, pun-filled delights from the pen of a truly inimitable writer, winner of the Skylark and John W. Campbell awards.

      Book Description

Callahan's Crosstime Saloon is the neighborhood tavern to all of time and space, where the regulars are anything but: time travelers, talking dogs, alcoholic vampires, cybernetic aliens--and a group of people who really, truly care about each other. It's the rare kind of place where bad pun are as appreciated as good conversation.Time Travelers Strictly Cash is their policy, but then again everybody pays cash at Callahan's. Lay your money on the bar, name your poison, step up to the line drawn on the barroom floor, and after drinking make a toast and throw the glass into the fireplace. It's an odd tradition (don't worry about the cost--Callahan gets the glasses at a bulk discount), but one's that's led to some interesting stories.Callahan's Secret may be something even the regulars would never guess. then again, it may be as simple as listening to those post-toast stories. After-all, like Callahan says, shared pain is lessened and shared joy in increased--a simple concept that could, after a few drinks, lead to saving the world......This omnibus edition contains the trio of books that introduced the world to Mike Callahan, Jake Stonebender, Doc Webster, Mickey Finn, Fast Eddie Costigan, Long-Drink McGonnigle, Ralph Won Wau Wau and the rest of the regulars of Callahan's Place in the stories that helped Spider Robinson to win both a John W. Campbell Award and a legion of fans.

5 out of 5 stars A Toast From the Chalk Line.......2006-09-19

I just read the Complete Callahan Chronicles - a collection of short stories Spider Robinson published over the years about a bar on Long Island where odd and mysterious things happen, but where all the patrons are friends and troubles are handled by a group - not by individuals.

It's the best example of a modern tribe I've seen and I wish I could go down to Callahan's Place and stand at the chalk line, drain a glass of scotch, offer up a toast, and toss my glass into the fireplace.

      1 out of 5 stars Terrible Book.......2005-10-28

I hated this book. Spider Robinson also wrote a scathing review of Stephen King's the Stand, which I think you should go out and read instead of this garbage.

      5 out of 5 stars It's about Feelings.......2005-09-30

To be honest, I use this book to weed out new people. If they really like the book, then they can become friends. If they dislike this book, or if it's "just okay", then I really don't want to know them. That's how good Callahan is, and how much the writing of Spider Robinson means to me. This is damned good stuff, people. Damned good stuff. If you don't like it, it's because you are not capable of feeling the human (or humane) condition. If that's true, I pity you.

5 out of 5 stars The expression of an ideal.......2005-06-04

Callahan's Place is the ideal of the neighborhood bar: a place people go not so much to drink as to be together and share their lives. The Place's motto is that shared pain is lessened, while shared joy is increased; its regulars are a bunch of working-class joes who have developed an amazing degree of compassion and empathy ... not to mention a matter-of-fact outlook towards the occasional time-traveler or space alien who drops in.

It should be emphatically noted that the Callahan's books are not science fiction, although they're still speculative fiction -- Robinson is exploring the psychological universe, not the physical one. Nevertheless, this book alternates between laugh-out-loud hilarious and deeply moving, almost to the point of spiritual experience.

Unfortunately, as the series went on the stories got longer, incorporated more sci-fi elements and less humanity, and finally turned into just interminable rhapsodizing by Robinson about what would constitute the Ideal Party. All of the good stories (and the first couple of bad ones) are fortunately collected in this convenient volume, thus sparing you the horror that is Callahan's Key.

1 out of 5 stars Warning: This review contains a spoiler.......2004-06-26

Somewhere in the afterword of "The Callahan Chronicals," Robinson alludes to an SF writer who wrote a series of stories that were deliberately bad, I suppose as a sort of commentary on the literary standards of the public. The series proved popular. After reading this note, I wondered for a few days what the series could be. Then, duh, it struck me. Robinson is, of course, referring to the stories in this very book. It's a reasonable joke, but not one I was happy to pay for. As for the stories themselves, if you like characters that are organic (i.e., wooden) and multidimensional-remember that one is a multiple of itself-and don't care about plots, you might like the book. Readers who prefer science fantasy to science fiction may like the book as well: most non-human characters are unique, freeing Robinson from any obligation to consider implications of the presence of different sentient species in this adolescent fantasy world. The book might also appeal to science fantasy fans who crave reassurance about how cool they are and who don't mind page after page of authors showing off how clever they are.
