5 out of 5 stars Practical Magic!.......2007-07-25

This book is the best resource out there, and is currently being used at the local university. I am an education major and my campus uses this edition as well. There are many helpful bulleted lists for quick reference while in the classroom. Several supply freebies are printed up just waiting to Xeroxed st your convenience. Still, the best features are it's ease of reading and application of little details that make all the difference. This is the kind of "practical magic" you don't receive from a formal education that makes all the difference come game time.

4 out of 5 stars And may your journey as a substitute go well...........2007-01-12

This book provides some real insights and valuable suggestions for how to approach substitute teaching. In fact, I have used the techniques outlined in the book to solve other problems with regards to public speaking and small group leadership.

Overall, I have found the book helpful, although I do have one very minor complaint...Although the book makes every effort to be clear in its presentation (using reminder icons etc.) The headings threw me off. Generally you expect Larger headings to be the main point with smaller headings explaining subpoints; however the headings in this book kind of blurred together using the same fonts, so I had to go back in the reading to determine what the over arching themes were for the chapter.

As I said, very minor complaint!!! Otherwise, I would say...Buy this book first! The others just reiterate the same points, and they don't do it with half the level of thoroughness.

5 out of 5 stars recommended for new teachers.......2006-06-25

This book is very handy and has been very helpful in giving a new teacher ideas for use in the classroom. Many activities and reproducable sheets are included as well. While most of the content on being an effective teacher I have read elsewhere in such titles as Harry and Rosemary Wong's 'The First Days of School', this handbook is recommended for teachers who are starting out.

4 out of 5 stars Management advice - plus war stories.......2006-07-24

The stereotypical military general wields authority like a blunt instrument: Issue an order and it's followed. The reality of military leadership is more complex, as this intriguing study of General Douglas MacArthur shows. MacArthur took a deliberate, nuanced approach to inspiring his troops. His arsenal included motivation, knowledge, intimidation, praise and self-deprecation. Authors Theodore and Donna Kinni combine a short biography, compelling anecdotes and a keen understanding of MacArthur's career and personality to build this episodic analysis of his approach to strategy, motivation and management. They include relevant study questions after each chapter. We recommend this to managers who need to take their leadership skills to boot camp and to those who enjoy good military tales.

5 out of 5 stars He Came Back .......2005-06-01

I am a bit of a World War Two history buff so of course I have read a number of books about the involvement in any number of campaigns that MacArthur was involved in. That is why I was excited to read this book. I had always heard that MacArthur was considered a great leader and here is the book that tells you exactly why he was considered as such. MacArthur was one of our nation's preeminent military leaders with a career that has rarely been equaled. Not only was he in the military for want was almost his full life, but his military accomplishments stand out as one of the most accomplished in the U.S. military history.

This book covers the basic principals that made MacArthur not only a great military leader, but as a leader overall. The authors tell us that there were three founding components of successful long term leadership. They are values, vision and proficiency. They argue that great leadership is first and foremost moral leadership. Values guide us in our actions and the authors tells us that many of the scandals he hear about on the news are when leaders put aside the morals of the situation.

Overall the book describes many of the skills and talents required of leaders. The authors detail why each of the skills are important and how MacArthur developed and used them. The book is interesting and at times exciting. Given I also have an interested in his military career the book was doubly interesting. You will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars A Life Distilled to 50 Leadership Lessons.......2005-05-03

General Douglas MacArthur was in many ways a man ahead of his times. His life of leadership spanned more than six decades.

Theodore Kinni and Donna Kinni introduce a new generation of students to 50 leadership lessons that guided his life. They can be adopted no matter what the goal or challenge.

The lessons fall into five categories:

1. Define victory . . . and purse it relentlessly.
2. Use all your weapons - especially speed and surprise.
3. Start on the right foot: take command, establish trust.
4. Personal resolve and language have power.
5. Enduring values and constant learning transform institutions.

MacArthur lived a life of extraordinary achievements. The 50 lessons give a rare insight into what MacArthur knew about goal setting and building lean, responsive organizations, leadership, performance and focusing on winning results.

If you are results oriented, this book deserves space on your desktop.

4 out of 5 stars Great Read.......2007-05-21

I enjoyed reading this book it was quick and the characters were very likeable.

I also enjoyed reading the other two books in this serious, in order.

1. The Substitute Millionaire
2. The Unexpected Millionaire
3. The Ultimate Millionaire

The third was my favorite, but the first two were great as well.

2 out of 5 stars the million dollar date?.......2007-04-02

this is a really qiuck read book. a couple or three hours and you're done. that said, you should not expect great literature, but to be entertained. i thought the relationship between julie and ryan was nicely done, but i never really warmed up to to todd ashton III., or the grandmother ruth. the book moved nicely and i enjoyed the journey from 1st very funny date to the happy ending.

3 out of 5 stars Not one of her best but not bad.............2007-02-20

I really like Susan Mallory's stories but this is not one of my favorites. I felt the storyline was a little bland but I did like Ryan and Julie together, they had really good chemistry. If your looking for a quick romance and an easy read, than this is a decent choice. I do have to say that I've read the 2nd in the series and it gets better!

5 out of 5 stars Very very good writer.......2007-01-10

Amazing story. It doesn't matter if you read a book and the plot can or can't be true. What's important is that you can be bias or not to the main character, and when that occur, when you hate everything that anyone do to that character, the writer has you you liked or not. And that's why this book deserves SIX stars.

5 out of 5 stars The Substitute Millionaire-Joyfully Recommended.......2007-01-06

Ryan Bennett thought that he was doing his cousin Todd, a favor, saving him from a blind date with woman who was obviously a gold digger by pretending to be Todd. Both Todd and Ryan had been the target of scheming woman before, so he's stunned when he arrives and meets Julie Nelson, a woman who quickly captivates him. Before he knows it heat explodes between them, leading to a spontaneous night of passion. Only when the morning comes, he is forced to explain the deception of why he pretends to be his cousin. Needless to say Julie shows him the door and refuses to have anything else to do with him. Except neither of them expected Juile to become pregnant. Now Ryan has a second chance, can he convince Julie he's not the total cad she thinks he is?

The Substitute Millionaire is yet another book by Susan Mallery that will be heading for my keeper shelf to be read again and again. I fell in love with Ryan right along with Julie. Julie's sisters and Ryan's cousin Todd round out an already suburb story leaving me wondering whose story would be next! Fans of Susan Mallery will find this a must read and readers who haven't had the pleasure of reading Ms. Mallery's work before, will find The Substitute Millionaire a delightful treat!

Book Description

The average person eats one-half cup of sugar a day, more than is recommended for the average person, particularly people who suffer from diabetes, insulin resistance, and Syndrome X. Unlike sugar, xylitol does not require insulin to be metabolized. Xylitol is an all-natural sugar substitute derived from birch tree bark or from corncobs. It is teaspoon-for-teaspoon as sweet as sugar, and has the added quality of binding to saliva, leaving a sweet taste lingering in the mouth. Fran Gare explains the health benefits of using xylitol rather than sugar, aspartame, saccharin, sorbitol, or mannitol.

4 out of 5 stars Useful book for new subs.......2007-09-02

This book has a lot of resources, although I chose not to create the binder exactly as suggested...some of the sections I felt were irrelevant and so I took some of the forms and teaching ideas and put them in a binder in my own way. Overall, a worthy purchase!

4 out of 5 stars Ease your nerves!.......2007-07-24

This book has made me feel much more confident in myself as I prepare to sub. Lots of great ideas and helpful hints!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!.......2007-04-13

This makes my second year as a substitute teacher, and I would be lost without this organizer. I would highly recommend it to all of those who are contemplating becoming a substitute teacher, or for those of you who are but don't know about this wonderful organizer.

5 out of 5 stars An absolute MUST for every substitute teacher!.......2006-10-26

I am subbing this year for the first time after graduating with teacher certification. I tend to be organized to the point of obsession and I was really looking for something to help me keep track of my various teaching assignments, plus house quick and easy ideas to use in the classroom when we have spare time.

This book is by far the BEST deal I have found for substitute teachers. Too many "sub kit" style books assume that you have no idea how to teach at all and the content is wasted on people like me who have been through a teacher training program. This organizer, however, does not do those things. You get practical, insightful and helpful resources to make your subbing assignments more productive. The reproducible sheets for leaving notes to the teacher and keeping track of the jobs are WONDERFUL. I've even had classroom teacher's compliment me on my organization when they see my binder!

It is definitely worth the price and the time it takes to put the organizer together.

4 out of 5 stars Great Organizer!.......2005-07-16

I am going to be substitute teaching this year and have read many books on the subject. This book was helpful because it has many reproducible forms and worksheets. The book is used to create a Substitute Teacher Binder. You need to buy a binder, four sets of five tab dividers, and plastic sheet protectors. Then, you tear out all of the pages of the book and organize them in the binder. The book includes labels to organize the material. It took some time to create the binder (it wasn't fun tearing out all of the pages). However, I think it will be useful. I plan to add other ideas to the binder over time. It doesn't have a lot of information on HOW to substitute teach. It gives you a lot of information on HOW to make substitute teaching easier. If you don't have some background in education, I recommend that you read other books as well!

    Book Description

Blood substitutes are solutions designed for use in patients who need blood transfusions, but for whom whole blood is not available, or is not safe. This interest has intensified in the wake of the AIDS and hepatitis C epidemics. Blood Substitutes describes the rationale, current approaches, clinical efficacy, and design issues for all blood substitutes now in clinical trials. The many summary diagrams and tables help make the book accessible to readers such as surgeons and blood bankers, who have less technical expertise than the biochemists and hematologists who are designing and testing blood substitutes.

    * Includes chapters necessary to the understanding of blood substitutes, including history, toxicity, physiology, and clinical applications
    * Presents detailed descriptions of the various products that have been developed and have advanced to clinical trials, and some that are in earlier states of development

    5 out of 5 stars I Remember Cheese Fondly.......2007-10-02

I remember cheese fondly although I don't eat it anymore. Jo Stepaniak's The Ultimate Uncheese Cookbook offers recipes which make a valiant attempt to imitate the texture and flavor of dairy products, but the most successful aspect of the book is that it makes the comfort food quality of cheese available to those who may have never expected to experience it again.

My favorite recipes from the book so far are the Gooey Grilled Cheez, the Durritas seasoning (the taste of Nacho Cheese Dorritos), the Unprocessed Cheez Sauce (I like it on burritos), Spinafels (Spinach Ricotta Balls), the French Onion Soup Gruyere and most recently the Philadelphia Potato Chowder. The book contains a variety of salads, dressings, soups, pasta dishes, deserts, and block uncheeses. Everything I have tried from The Ultimate Uncheese Cookbook has turned out nicely. I strongly recommend this book to vegans (or to anyone else) who would like to experience a unique collection of comfort foods.

    5 out of 5 stars A dairy-free miracle.......2007-09-20

Wow, talk about a cheesy resource! With my focus on all things dairy-free, I was amazed that I had not yet picked up a copy of this cookbook. I think that two things held me back: I don't really miss cheese, as I was never a big fan of the stuff; and I couldn't imagine an entire cookbook focused on one type of food.

Well unbeknownst to me, this wasn't just a book about making fake cheddar. Sure, it contains tons of made from scratch cheezes, from slicing Swizz Cheez, to the softer Brie, to a saucy Nacho Cheez. Yet, it goes so many steps further, reminding me just how many foods rely on that creamy and cheesy taste. Blintzes, fondue, pesto, pizza, quiche, alfredo sauce, cheesecakes, French onion soup, lasagna ... you name it and the author Jo Stepaniak has the recipe answer. I was impressed.

Seriously, this is a must have book for any former cheese-loving vegan or dairy-free consumer. Sure, creating an exact duplicate sans dairy can be an uphill battle, and depending on each person's tastes, one recipe or another may not be their perfect fit. But I would be truly shocked if you couldn't find at least a handful of recipes in this cookbook to soothe your inner cheese-craving beast.

I recently trialed the Traditional Macaroni and Cheez, and can't wait to sample some of the calzones (I do miss pizza) and focaccias.

Making the actual "cheeses" does require a few ingredients that may be new-to-you. Luckily, there really are just a handful of these special ingredients required, allowing you to buy a good sized package of each once, and then reap the rewards of various "cheeses" for months. Also, while tofu definitely makes itself known in this cookbook, a surprising number of recipes are soy-free. In a good majority of the recipes, the author uses a variety of nuts, seeds, beans, grains, and seasonings to achieve the right consistency and flavor.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-08-25

I just purchased this book, and today I made the Gee Wiz. I'm telling you, this stuff is incredible. I've read most of the reviews here and I took the advise offered. I used a bit less lemon juice and a bit less Nutritional yeast. It was a hit with the entire family. DH and I have gone vegan for medical reasons. He really misses his cheese. This stuff hit the spot. He was ready to eat the entire container. I can't wait to try more of the recipes. When I do, I will be back to update my review.

Ok for those who want to know, it does not taste exactly like cheese.
However if I had not been the one to make it and had it on snack table with crackers, I would have been asking for the cheese spread recipe. It is really that good. I will definitely be making more of this and I will be taking it to homes that are not vegan. I can't wait to see their reactions.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Way to Break a Cheese Habit!.......2007-05-13

As a vegetarian who is struggling to break a cheese habit in order to go completely vegan, this book is a God send. The recipes are absolutely delicious, and I've even used my slow cooker with several. Try it; you'll be glad you did!

4 out of 5 stars Great source of decent recipes.......2007-05-07

You'll have to have access to a health foods/specialty store to buy some of the ingredients but if you're on a dairy-free restriction this book can at least help you have some sort of normalcy back to your diet. If you're used to eating gooey dairy goodness this food probably won't live up but if you've been missing your big ol' bowl of mac-n-cheese while living with new restrictions the recipe here will come pretty close. Good food, easy directions and a great resource for hard-to-find alternative foods.

4 out of 5 stars Saving Me $$$.......2002-01-23

Wow! What a fantastic book! So many wonderful tips on how to do things at a fraction of the cost. Who'd a thought it? It's so much easier to look in the pantry than to shell out the $$ at the check-out counter!

I'm not a huge graphic novel person - but occasionally I pick one up, get sucked into the plot, and can't put it down. Suki did exactly this.

Let me start out by saying this story is filled with moral (and textual) ambiguities. It's not a simplistic, nice story. But that's what makes it intriguing. It's a *real* coming of age story - believable, complex, and very sympathetic characters.

I pretty much agree with the other reviewers - very suspenseful, psychologically provocative, and artistically done. I gave it 4.5 stars out of 5.

I'll also add that I got a free copy of Snow Drops with my order - which was a pleasant surprise, and a similarly good story. Also a graphic novel for adults, about adolescent relationships & high school. Not as morally complex as Suki, but actually a bit more dramatic and a lot more to the story - part love story, part mystery, part drama. I also give SNOW DROPS 4.5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Full Series Review - No Spoilers.......2007-03-21

Between the 32-year-old teacher on the one hand, and the teddy bears on the other, SUKI always seemed like something I wouldn't be interested in. After reading LEGAL DRUG and TOKYO BABYLON, however, I had such faith in CLAMP that I bought all three volumes of SUKI at once. I am very glad that I did.

Hinata Asahi is a brilliant but naive sixteen-year-old who lives alone with only her teddy bears. Her cast-iron innocence frustrates and frightens her schoolmates, who try in vain to teach her "common sense" and self-protective instincts. When Hinata starts receiving an unusual - and inappropriate -- amount of attention from her enigmatic new male teacher, her friends are alarmed and suspicious, but Hinata is determined to see no evil.

Though propelled by Hinata's upbeat innocence and humor on the surface, SUKI quickly becomes an extremely unnerving, climb-the-walls suspense tale, which can be read on more than one level. The sensitive artwork matches well with the psychologically evocative storyline. I particularly love the snow and shadow scenes. It has the same lead artist as LEGAL DRUG (Mick Nekoi), who imparts a slightly Gothic feel, and sympathetically evokes the painful vulnerability of the young.

This is a three-volume series complete. If you purchase this series through Amazon, watch out for the Editorial Description of Book 3, which is one long spoiler.

4 out of 5 stars Reminds me of someone I know.......2004-11-30

I'm getting this book for my friend for Christmas because Hinata reminds me of her--smart, but at the emotional age level of, say, an 8-year old and completely nuts--I was laughing so hard while reading because I couldn't help thinking of this particular person. Otherwise I'd be a little annoyed at the character for being too cute, but...people like this actually exist!

The images are well drawn, and I like the visual devices like drawing Hina as a tail-wagging puppy after Asou-sensei pats her on the head.

5 out of 5 stars A girl, a new teacher and two teddy bears........2004-06-03

Hinata Asahi lives alone in a huge house, she is a high school student who gets great grades, and she likes everything and everybody. When Shiro Asou moves in next door and ends up becoming her new teacher she ends up having a crush on him.
And he seems to return her interest. Or is there something else going on?
The fact is this book hooked me. There was something going on, something I just couldn't figure out and it wasn't just a simple teacher-student forbidden love thing. Shiro Asou barely seems to notice his students, yet is willing to hang around Hinata. I feel he is up to something, but I have to read the next book to find out.
Another series by CLAMP that I'll have to finish. Go CLAMP!

4 out of 5 stars A little bit... creepy. But good........2004-06-02

This is described as "sweet" and "lovely" by other reviewers. I'm probably just a bad person or something, but initially I just get a sort of creepy feeling from it. Maybe you have to read the whole series to get it. Right now it's just disturbing me. I'm not saying it's not good; it's terrifically well written and drawn and told. I think part of the reason it's giving me the crawlies is *because* it's so well done. If it were silly, or dumb, it wouldn't be nearly so affecting. But Clamp - the quartet of women who write it - take their craft seriously, and it shows.

Initially it's about a very, very innocent girl who lives alone. A man moves in next door. She likes him...

The emptyness of the rooms, the teddy bears sitting on the floor to see her off and greet her; you can almost hear the silence of the house. That's what's giving me the shivers. Ignorance is not bliss. I'll probably have to read the rest of them or it's going to bug me forever.
