This groundbreaking book should definitely help further the movement of what the authors call "a new gerontology." John Rowe, M.D., and Robert Kahn, Ph.D., both members of the MacArthur Foundation Research Network, thoroughly debunk the myth that aging has to be a painful process of debilitation. Their research has shown that the influence of genetics shrinks proportionately as you get older, while social and physical habits become increasingly integral to your state of health--both mental and physical. The 10 years' worth of research cited in Successful Aging reveal some flabbergasting facts about health in later life. For example, an inactive person is worse off, health-wise, than a smoker who exercises regularly. And your lifestyle and attitude are significantly more important than your genes in determining whether or not your golden years are healthy ones--even if you have a genetic predisposition for developing Alzheimer's, arthritis, cancer, or other serious health problems.
Rowe and Kahn start with a thorough breakdown of nutritional advice, including a rundown of the many vitamins and other nutrients that those older than 60 are in particular need of. They also detail the most important exercises for optimal functioning of body and mind, and analyze the benefits and risks of DHEA, melatonin, and tretinoin, while warning about snake-oil formulations that are now being marketed to the AARP set. There's also a thorough explanation of the importance of creativity and social connections--the research shows that, for the aging, strong social ties are even more important in preventing illness than genetic background.
Book Description
Here at last is a compelling and inspiring presentation of what determines how well we age--the results of the MacArthur Foundation Study of Aging in America, which show how to maintain optimum physical and mental strength throughout later life.
Research into aging has been revolutionized in the past ten years largely due to the MacArthur Study, which under the leadership of Drs. John W. Rowe and Robert L. Kahn created a network of leading research scientists from key fields to determine what aging actually involves. Rejecting the established approach of studying aging in terms of anticipated decline, these scientists set out to identify the factors that were enabling vast numbers of people to preserve and even enhance their mental and physical vitality in later life.
Successful Aging brings together the remarkable results of the study for the first time. They explode the myths about aging that have long shaped individual and institutional attitudes toward growing older, including the biggest myth of all: "The key to aging well is choosing your parents wisely." In fact, they discovered that lifestyle choices--more than genes--determine how well we age. Drs. Rowe and Kahn outline those vital choices, including changes in diet, types of exercise, mental stimulation, self-efficacy, and dynamic connections. These choices can make a difference no matter how late in life they are made. In addition, Drs. Rowe and Kahn include the latest research-based strategies to delay or prevent the common diseases of old age.
Society can also influence how we age. Drs. Rowe and Kahn detail innovative programs and policies that are enabling older men and women to stay healthy and to continue to contribute to their societies.
For all of us, the rewards of successful aging are great; this eye-opening work shows how they can be attained and enjoyed.

Excellent book!.......2007-01-04
This book was used in teaching a class for senior adults about effective aging. It was most helpful and easy to understand.
New perspective.......2006-02-16
Easy reading in simple language. Encouraging and uplifting. I love how it details the connection between social inter-actions and quality of life. Really good advice for maintaining independence in old age from a physical and mental perspective. Best of all, there is no pressure to rush out and make special purchases. I am getting copies as gifts for siblings - worth reading.
Successful Aging.......2002-11-30
I stumbled upon the book strictly by accident and ended up paying full list price at Barnes and Noble. After seeing the really great prices on Amazon, I reluctently sat down to read a few chapters to try and get my monies worth. Wow. To say the book was enlightening would be to offer a dis-service to the multi-year McArthur Foundation Study. I picked up a few things from the book that most readers will not and that is basic assumptions that Private Foundations and Private Research gathers far more information about a subject than Government sponsored projects. It occured to me that Government has pretty muched screwed up Social Security as well as providing for long term health care in America. Successful Aging gives an alternative to spending your final years in a Nursing Home. The book is very well thought through, well researched and backed up with countless citations that give credit where credit is due. I found the book an enjoyable read, almost a primer. After reading this book, I ordered out about three hundred dollars worth of additional books on aging. That should tell you something. By the way, I ordered another copy of the book in out of print library edition to add to my collection. Great Book! Great Read! Don't get old without it!
Should be a classic.......2002-11-01
The research findings reported in Successful Aging have been supported in a new 20-year study by an independent group of researchers. The study by Becca Levy of Yale Univerisity, et al, was reported in 2002. Simply stated, we can decide now to live longer and better. Having a positive attitude about aging is alone responsible for extending life by 7.5 years, and years of activity and involvment, not suffering. This is a very worthwhile read, despite what some stupid old fools have written before.
would have made a nice article.......2001-03-16
The idea behind this book is great, but its information could easily fit into a 3-page article in Woman's Day or a similar popular magazine. I expected to learn much more than I did from this very repetitive book. (It almost made me feel like I was aging on the spot: "Hey, didn't I just read that a few pages ago? Am I forgetting or imagining things?")
Book Description

The book contains fascinating anecdotes from his medical practice as his older patients reveal their pragmatic, workable, personal secrets of successful aging.
Customer Reviews:
Common sense.......2000-04-12
This book seems to confirm what you already know but just didn't write it down. It all makes sense and I found myself identifying people I know in the examples Dr. Old describes. It is a calm, soothing, relaxing book that helps the reader put vintage people on a higher level than they had them at before reading the book. It also helps younger people accept getting older and can act as a guide in their outlook of aging. Dr. Old also does a good job in using references to support his concepts with just the "right" mix of biblical reference. This is not just a book for old people but for anyone that deals with vintage people or ever wants to be one.

A Book to Remember.......2006-06-13
There have been several books published about memory and maintaining memory skills but this book is notable in its comprehensive look at the various facets of memory and how aging affects them. The book's first five chapters evaluate the current science of memory and explain how people use memory. Thereafter the book provides guidance on how one can work to improve memory in certain areas and develop strategies to cope with those natural impairments to memory that develop as a person ages. This book is very well written and notable for its optimistic outlook and lack of egotistical hype.
GOOD NEWS for Seniors !.......2006-02-15
Professors Einstein and McDaniel, in their easy-to-read guide to "memory fitness," debunk the myth that growing old means that one's memory is certain to decline significantly.
The book guides readers through understandable explanations of how our memories work, and the changes to expect. Best, strategies are offered to improve our memories, with emphasis on mental activity as well as physical exercise.
Most practical and satisfying are the many graphic demonstrations throughout the chapters which allow the reader to understand how his or her own memory is working.
Older adults should own this book, even if nothing else is learned, just to review the "cues" which one can use to serve as reminders to remember something. Younger adults need this book to complete a comprehensive approach to general fitness.
Though I have owned a computer for 22 years, I thought, at 76, that my brain's "hard drive" was too full to tackle much more data. Einstein and McDaniel's book has convinced me that there is room for much, much more. So, this year I've learned 130 new square dance steps.
MEMORY FITNESS: A GUIDE FOR SUCCESSFUL AGING will help you too.
clear, concise and applicable.......2005-08-02
Dr. Einstein was my Memory and Cognition professor and when I found out that he wrote a book, I decided to buy the book for my own information and for my parents to see it, if they so desired. I found the book to be not only a wonderful overview and recap of things that we learned in class, but also a great asset for everyone as they gain wisdom and years. People give up hope and expect to have increasing memory problems with age, but they don't imagine what they could do to help themselves beyond the use of post-it notes. I highly recommend this book!

Choosing a Nursing Home.......2004-05-30
I recently went through a long-term care crisis with my family, and I had to choose a nursing home. A friend gave me a copy of Aging Answers after seeing the author on the Today Show. There is a whole section dedicated to choosing a nursing home- the questions I should be asking. I am now satisfied that I have helped my parent choose the right nursing home. I needed quick simple answers to my questions, and the book did just that!
I think everyone should read this or keep it as a reference.

Compelling and Informative.......2004-05-29
I recently read Aging Answers. I would recommend it for any family. It's not a long book, but it helped me understand elder care much better, and it gave me resources that will aid me in the caregiving process. It also helped me understand why I should be planning ahead for my own future longterm care needs. My insurance agent shared it with me, and I am so glad he did.
I even called the author and she was very willing to talk to me about my specific situation. Thank you Valerie for being so nice and taking the time out of your busy schedule to listen.
A Clear Message.......2004-05-29
Aging Answers helps families understand clearly that we need to be having these conversations with each other about long-term care needs now and in the future. There is not one book on the planet that can cover every possible scenario, and give information of every subject. This is meant to be a guide and a resource. It is purposefully written to be EASY to understand. I would recommend that every family have a copy. For people who are not internet savvy, the resource section is outstanding!
The Conversation Starter.......2004-05-29
I thought the book was great. I think people need to keep in mind that this is meant to help families start the conversation about long term care and it is meant to help point people in the direction of resources that already exist. Aging Answers is not a long book, but it has all of the information a family needs to find the right care, and make better decisions. The resource section in the back of the book is particularly helpful. The stories in the front of the book are meant to help us understand that long-term care can happen to anyone at any time- and that's why it's so important to plan ahead if you can.
Thanks- I thought it was a good read, and something I will pass on to my parents and family members.
Web research more fruitful.......2004-03-10
My family and I were hoping to find more information in this book than it actually provided. We have found more information doing our own web search than the book could give us.
