Book Description
Although relatively common, Borderline Personality Disorder, or BPD, is often overlooked or misdiagnosed by therapists and clinicians and denied by those who suffer from it.
Symptoms of this tragic problem include unpredictability, violence and uncontrollable anger, deep depression and self-abuse. Parents with BPD are often unable to provide for the basic physical and emotional needs of their children. In an ironic and painful role reversal, BPD parents can actually raise children to be their caretakers. They may burden even very young children with adult responsibilities. They tend to demand unreasonable levels of emotional and material support from those least able to provide it. Plagued by irrational fears and anxieties, BPD parents often transfer feelings of self-hatred onto their children. salting the wounds inflicted by their insatiable need with constant denigration and abuse.
If you were raised by a BPD parent, your childhood was a volatile and painful time. This book, the first written specifically for children of borderline parents, offers step-by-step guidance to understanding and overcoming the lasting effects of being raised by a person suffering from this disorder. Learn what psychological criteria are necessary for a BPD diagnosis and identify the specific characteristics your parent presents. Discover specific coping strategies for dealing with issues common to children of borderline parents: low self-esteem, lack of trust, guilt, and hypersensitivity. Make the major decision whether to confront your parent about his or her condition.

If you were raised by parents that for what ever reason were not able to nuture you as a child and you are interested in personal growth this is the book for you! This book is my bible.
Amazing!.......2007-09-27
This book was so-o-o well written. It is very sympathetic and non-judgemental towards the children of Borderline parents - it gives them (us) hope for a better life through exercises and new ways of thinking about ourselves and the world.
So great, so compassionate!.......2007-08-08
This book was a difficult and great read. The author truly sets the tone for the adult child of a BPD parent, letting the adult child know that though the labels of BPD are difficult to swallow it allows the child to know they are not crazy nor alone. I recommend this book to all who have grown up in a home with a parent with BPD. Five stars indeed!
Extremely Helpful.......2007-06-18
I must say, it's a wonderful read for anyone with a parent with BPD or BPD - tendencies. I spent years trying to figure out what was so "off" in my childhood household - this book lays it out and laid the foundation for several "A-ha" moments. I highly recommend.

While respecting the unique circumstances surrounding an individual's challenges in coping, it provides methods for overcoming the feelings of: confusion, frustrations, hurt, neglect, and even anger, among others, thus guiding you on your individual path to healing. This is a "must read" for anyone remotely confronting such challenges in their own life, or if trying to understand those challenges being faced by a friend or loved one.

Just Starting.......2007-05-08
I have to admit I haven't finished the book yet, but I LOVE it already! I almost see it as a self-help book too, because as I read it, I'm doing a lot of reflections on myself and my own upbringing. I actually recommended the book to two other friends who aren't even pregnant or expecting any time soon! What a great book to teach about self-esteem and how we can help instill it in our children.
Helpful even when your baby is little.......2006-11-10
Reading this early was a great help to me. My son is still quite young, but I'm already getting good ideas and getting into good habits to help build up his self esteem. This information also makes me feel like a more confident parent.
From the author of, Raising Our Children, Raising Ourselves.......2006-09-09
As the author of Raising Our Children, Raising Ourselves I recommend Your Child's Self-Esteem with all my heart.
Until my book was out I told my clients, readers and workshop participants to read Briggs book. Although I treat tantrums differently, I find most of what Briggs said over 30 years ago
still in line with my own guidance. She was way ahead of her time
and for the most part the book will give you everything you need
to know about your child's self-esteem and more.
Wonderful book for all ages not just babies!.......2006-03-20
Great book on how to raise confident, happy and responsible children. The cover has a baby on it but it really is for children through the teenage years.
The missing manual on how to raise children or yourself.......2006-02-24
I found this book when in college, applied it to myself first, and then to all my relationships with children. What can be better than seeing a child blossom, and seeing love in their eyes when they are going to spend time in your presence? No, we can never be perfect, but this book gives the perspective and big picture, so that you can ride out the difficult times, knowing your consistent nurturing of healthy self esteem will come back to reward everyone involved. This is always one of my new parent or struggling parent gifts.

worth the time.......2007-05-21
When I first received this book, I read the book quickly without taking the time to get a notebook and complete the daily exercises. When I finished the book, I grabbed a notebook and started back through each chapter. Hannah's advice hit right on target in many areas of my life. Hannah understands the chaos and emotions involved with motherhood. She offers avenues for mothers to take back control of their life. In a world where everyone is selling external fixes to problems, it's nice to read a book that focuses on the internal you.
Great ideas and tools........2007-05-14
This is a great book with great ideas. It really does work for a full-time working mother, as well as a stay at home working mom. Even if you only utilize a handful of her ideas it is worth it.
Book Description
It's in the news: American children are too fat and this is resulting in an alarming increase in type 2 "adult onset" diabetes in children under the age of 12. Dr. Naomi Neufeld recognized this more than two decades ago when she began seeing an increasing number of overweight children in her office as a pediatric endocrinologist - children who were not just 20 to 30 pounds overweight, but 50 to 100 pounds overweight and children who were as young as 6 years old.
The KidShape
© program she founded is a family-based weight-management program that has helped thousands of young people lose weight by learning how to make healthy choices about eating and activity. Included are "The truths behind the myths about food," "Seven lessons for fit families," fun exercises, and healthy recipes.

EXCELLENT book for facilitating a weight loss group for kids or a family!!!.......2007-05-12

THey are both thin but their son (12) is overweight due to emotional eating. THis book is very easy to read for any parent or adult who is wanting to educate a child or a group of kids.It offers step by step and DOABLE plan of action. I purchased the cookbook for ny nephew and he absolutely loves it and has been cooking from it -- at 12 years old! recipes are delicious!!

THE RIGHT WORDS FOR EVERY SITUATION
Do you find yourself in those maddening situations where you sound like a broken record when talking to your child? Your preschooler won't decide what she wants to wear, regardless of how many times you insist that she just choose; your struggling third grader says "I can't do math," and your "Sure you can!" reassurance falls like a dead weight; your daughter smears on black eyeliner just before the bus arrives, and your daily protests are muted by hers.
WHAT'S LEFT TO SAY? LOTS.
In Parent Talk, a must-have for every parent with a preschool to high school-age child, Chick Moorman tells you what to say so that you can communicate more effectively -- and peacefully -- with your child in every circumstance, including:
- The morning mad dash to dress, eat, and leave the house on time
- The nightly struggle to focus on homework
- The endless car ride of exhaustion-induced whining
- The meltdown in the mall
For instance, Moorman's antidote to the "I can't" loop is "Act as if you've done this before." With Moorman's help, you'll learn the words to use and the words to avoid to end power struggles and the fruitless conversation loops you're stuck in.

very helpful book.......2007-04-28
My life was a syntax error before I read this book. I have an older child that I had no troubles with whatsoever, and I was afraid my youngest was a "problem child". Thanks to Chick Moorman, I found out he is NOT a problem child at all, he just responds to the type of language that Moorman explains in the book. It does make a huge difference. If you're having troubles with your kids, this book could change your life.
Excellent Communication Tool.......2007-03-24
Great tool for all parents to learn how to communicate with their kids to bring out the best in them.

How to destroy your relationship with your kids.......2006-04-30
Regrettably, I bought this book (for one cent) based on the strong reviews. I will never put so much credence in reviews again. This would definitely not be one that you would thumb through at the bookstore and buy. The author appears to have been introduced to child psychology about five minutes before writing this book. His methodology is extremely juvenile and naive. His whole approach is to have an arsenal of canned phrases that you tell your kid for various circumstances.
This doesn't sound like a bad thing at first until you find out what unimaginative over-simplistic blabber that "Chick" offers. I could point out samples from every page of the first 25 that I read and the dozen or so others that I then skimmed through. Just quoting this pansy-ass fluff turns my stomach. Here is a story he tells a speaker who was distracted by a couple of kids talking at a lecture...
"Frowning, he looked at them and very quietly said 'I'm feeling distracted by your behavior. Please make a different choice.' By telling these students to make a different choice the speaker used language that communicated respect. His message informed them 'I see you as responsible for your own actions. You control your behavior. You choose your responses to life.'
Every page has this same sickening tone to it. If you want to avoid reality and miss the opportunities to affect your children in a way that builds self-esteem and confidence in them with real heart to heart interaction and instead gum them up with garbage talk then this book is for you. Otherwise, to quote the author "PLEASE MAKE A DIFFERENT CHOICE" and find a better book or just use your own intuition and common sense. This book teaches you how to destroy relationships by talking in mumbo jumbo out of the side of your mouth, while trying to keep a straight face. A one star rating gives this comic book way too much credit.
Parent Talk: How to Talk to Your Children in Language That B.......2004-01-18
This is a great book! After 20 years of working with children, I thought I knew all the ways to speak to a child. But this book has given me new insight into the impact that our words have on children. It shows examples of how we inadvertently teach our children 'learned helplessness' and ways to teach them the process of making decisions, handling everyday happenings, and to make their own choices. I have also been amazed at how the advice in this book works with my teenager! So I ventured a step further and have used the advice in this book with co-workers, too, with some amazing results! It is easy to read and refer back to when necessary. Every parent should have a copy of this book handed to them when their children are born.

Great book for teachers.......2007-03-20
This book is awesome. The authors explain different issues that could occur in the classroom (bullying, substance abuse, etc.). They give plenty of internet resouces and ideas for classroom activities. All teachers, no matter what they teach, can learn a lot of this book.
I highly recommend it.
Book Description
From the moment they are born, children experience an unfortunate value system that reserves respect and esteem for a select few. Those who fail to measure up end up resigning themselves to a lifetime of feeling inadequate and inferior. Over the past twenty-five years, more than a million parents and teachers have benefited from Dr. James Dobson's insightful counsel in his classic Hide and Seek. Now revised and updated, and in paperback, this book provides a new generation of parents with practical pointers for raising self-confident, healthy children.
Customer Reviews:
a very interesting read ...........2006-08-04
The book starts with a somewhat surprising beginning which grabbed my attention early. After that, the first couple of chapters talk about the importance of confidence and how it can be eroded over time. After Chapter 3, the book picks up and gives some interesting insight into building confidence. There were some religious references that I could do without. Other then that this book is a must read if you have children.
Self Esteem.......2006-02-27
Excellent Book, one every parent and/or parent-to-be should read! Timely delivery and in excellent condition!
One of the best child-rearing books available.......2003-10-16
Dr. Dobson does an excellent job of getting across the basics of child psychology and how they relate to self-esteem, without either talking over the readers' heads or talking down to them. He describes some of the ways that parents can untentionally weaken their children's self-esteem and many ways to prevent or remedy that situation, ultimately giving the child a self-image that is based on inherent worth rather than abilities, attractiveness, possessions or performance. This book is highly recommended to anyone who is disappointed in the prevailing current views on how to build a child's self-esteem, and wants to try a better way--God's way.

Toxic Parents: Overcoming Their Hurtful Legacy & Reclaiming Your Life.......2007-07-07
This book, for me, was very hard to put down. Reading other peoples' experiences and the results in their lives was heartrending and helped me feel less alone. The letters to parents helped me start to formulate letters to mine. This book was recommended by my therapist, and it has given me the strength to move forward.
I HIGHLY recommend it. Thank you!
eye opener.......2007-05-08
This book along with a couple of others on the subject have helped me to have peace with my hurtful childhood. I had pretty much adopted the attitude that I received the hand that I was dealt in life. Now I'm beginning to see that things could have been much better had I had parents who bothered to take an interest in me other than what I could do for them. The good news is I feel empowered to break the cycle and provide loving feedback for my children at all times.
"And you were wondering why...".......2007-05-01
It is rare that any of us grow up in "perfectly-parented" households; after all we're imperfect humans. Some of us have had really difficult, complex upbringings. Yet, we can move on and make the best of our lives with the help of information offered in this book. It opened a new vista for me, and parents should find it thought-provoking for their own relationships, especially in regard to both their parents and their children.
It was a great help to recognize the psychological types in my parents. For a couple of years in my adulthood my mother and I even "divorced" each other. Although we were not able to resolve all our issues before her death, we were finally able to function on relatively friendly terms in the last years of her life.
Although individual situations often warrant consulting a professional counselor, this book is an invaluable tool for identifying and recognizing the problematic traits, reasons for the behaviors, and ways to move beyond the differences, so you don't wallow in the blame-game. Depending on one's spiritual inclination, blame cannot be laid entirely on the parent. There may be karmic dynamics that call for healing.

Good book for doing self-analyis of one's childhood. Good start to moving foward and getting over the past.

- Gets kids to do what you ask, the first time you ask
- Stops fighting, bickering, and disrespectful language
- Ends hassles over homework, chores, messy rooms, and bedtime
- Instills positive self-image and builds confidence. . . and much more!
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book.......2007-02-27
I read this book and it helped me a lot raising my two kids. I refer to it occasionally still. It has a good chart system for instilling discipline and consequences that isn't too hard or complicated to use. I recommend it along with Parenting with Love and Logic.
The best discipline book I've seen.......2006-11-08
This book is meant to be used, and it is easy to implement the author's guidelines. This book is respectful and compassionate to the kids and their parents, offering tools for a parent to learn more about their child and to find ways to praise them and help them appreciate their "areas of brilliance." It also offers very easy tools for establishing clear and fair guidelines and consequences, tailored to each child's needs. I use the principles I learned from this book every day, and they work. The kid knows what is expected of him, and what to expect if he goofs. And instead of threatening your kid all day, you just dole out an x whenever he breaks a rule. Imagine, no more threats, and yet the kid gets some leeway because he doesn't get privileges removed until he breaks the rules three more times. As a mother of three, I can tell you it really works.

NewMom.......2007-07-04
I checked this book out of the library a few weeks before my daughter (now 3 months old) was born. One of these days they won't let me renew it and I'll have to break down and get my own copy! This book is packed full of valuable information. My daughter is developing very well thanks to suggested activities and toys. I'm grateful to have recommendations at my fingertips about how to help her develop in various areas and why each area of development is important. I guess I assumed helping babies and children learn the skills they need would be second nature. (Kind of like breast feeding - HA!) A friend of my grandmother's who is an administrator at a physical therapy school recommended I get a book about motor skills. I'm so glad I stumbled upon this one!
An important resource for parents of young children!.......2003-12-10
For far too long, people have believed that the mind and body are separate entitities -- and that the functions of the mind are superior to those of the body. Pediatric physical therapist Tara Losquadro Liddle helps parents see that motor development is equally as important as cognitive and social/emotional development. In fact, motor activities contribute to cognitive and social/emotional development!
As a children's movement specialist who, for 24 years, has written and spoken about the importance of movement in children's lives and education, I practically used up my highlighter as I read this book! It's easy to read and understand, and it just makes so much sense. I recommend it for all parents of children birth to age five and think it should be on every expectant parent's list of books to read.
