A Good Beginning Book of Massage.......2007-05-13
This book contains good advice for people who want to learn to massage their friends. It is not intended for massage therapists. The photos are helpful and accompanying text is easy to follow. It takes you through a full body massage, and contains sections on massaging babies and children, shiatsu, and reflexology. Its title is misleading; it is by no means the complete book of massage.
Not for Massage therapists.......2006-06-11
This book is for couples who want to give each other a sensual massage. First of all, try giving a full body massage sitting next to someone on a bed, your back and shoulders will hurt. If Clare is so serious about massage, why doesn't she have them on a massage table, which is proper. This sounds like a book about foreplay, not massage. Someone with therapeutic intentions or who wants to get out knots or kinks will not benefit from this book. Some of the positions photographed are sexually suggestive. There may be technical discussion in this book, but it is out of place. The featured bodies may be beautiful, but not draped properly. This is not for professionals.
Very Good for Beginners.......2005-02-16
I throughly enjoyed this book as it laid down the basic rules of massage and was quite informative. It also creates an awareness of different forms of massage and has lead me to taking on massage therapy as a profession.
Not enough.........2005-01-30
I found that this book has relatively good information, however, I found out most of this by myself. After reading through it once I already have most of the information memorized. This book is more the top layer of the muscle. I go to a choir college and a lot of the people here have deep knots in their shoulders and lower back. Trying to use this information does not help too much. Oh, don't get me wrong, there are several things in this book that I could use, although I might have to alter it a little. For someone that wants to go into massage therapy, I would suggest getting a few other books. I myself have purchased Art Riggs' Deep Tissue Massage book.
I would recommend this book for the people that just want to relax people for a short time. If however you would like to cause a deeper, longer lasting feeling of relaxation, purchase some other books. This book only provides the "icing on the cake" of massage.. I think. I sort of regret this buy, so think at least twice before buying.
Too Involved to Learn Easily.......2004-07-27
This is a somewhat clinical approach to what should be a really warm and personal subject. The author has a tendency to go on and on, burying us with minutia that we don't really need unless we are involved in massage professionally.
Offputting for the novice, hobyist or hedonist; might work better for the professional-level massage practitioner.

With more than 650,000 copies sold, massage therapist Lucinda Lidell's Book of Massage has been updated with new photos and instructional drawings. Not for the prudish, as the subjects in most of the photos are completely in the buff, the book presents an intense, information-packed, step-by-step guide to traditional massage, shiatsu, and reflexology.
No matter which method you choose to focus on (you're advised to choose one at a time), Lidell is thorough in her explanations of the strokes and techniques necessary to give relaxing, therapeutic massage in the privacy of your own home. Detailed drawings, diagrams, and photographs help to further demonstrate how to address each individual body part.
Divided into distinct chapters for each of the three methods, The Book of Massage also includes several sections that Lidell stresses are fundamental to all types of massage. The first is "Beginning," with information such as creating the right atmosphere (a warm room and soft lighting), applying oil, and finding a comfortable position. Additionally, Lidell suggests that everyone should review sections on the human touch and anatomy, both of which oddly come at the end of the book.
As thorough as The Book of Massage may be, do not expect to walk away from it an expert. As with any skill worth learning, giving good massage takes time, study, and practice, practice, practice. --Bree Altman

The Book of Massage.......2007-09-30
The book is informative with fine pictures giving every aspect of the description. The books gives the idea of the 'healing science', even to the layman for whom, massage is a new subject.
thanks,
Dr.Maulik Vyas
excellent knowledge of both western and eastern techniques.......2007-06-15
It is great knowledge of massage techniques for learner and trained MTs.
Pictures are very good and the matter has been dealt with expertly.
I enjoyed reading and learning new techniques of massage therapy.
The only thing I found different is nude client on table, which differs from draping rules defined by AMTA/National Board USA (That is draping of client as per applicable laws of MD/DC/VA) .
How to Massage.......2007-05-13
This book is intended for use between partners and close friends. It covers traditional Swedish Massage, Shiatsu, and reflexology. If you want detailed massage sequences on how precisely to give a massage to a close friend this book will do it. The photographs are excellent as are the drawings.
Good Book.......2005-09-14
I have read through most of this book. It gives good information about massage and how to apply it. The more you practice, the better you get.
Excellent resource for the beginner.......2004-08-13
I wanted a basic book of massage techniques, this is it. I also bought another book with photos that I don't find nearly as good. This one has drawings with helpful diagrams as to direction etc. This book also covers the basics of shiatsu and reflexology but by far the most extensive section is on massage. I learned a lot just from scanning the text and studying the diagrams/drawings. This is a great book and worth the money.

Here's a workout with one big difference from all the others: it uses a ball. Among others, the kind of lightweight vinyl ball you often see stacked up in huge cages in toy stores (perhaps the cheapest piece of workout equipment ever). Zake, a yoga teacher and bodywork practitioner, began developing her techniques 20 years ago to help herself recover from a hip injury. She believes that rolling on the ball in various ways stimulates muscles at their origins, causing them to relax and elongate; at the same time, the gentle pressure increases circulation to the muscles and tendons. This in turn helps balance the body and relieve all kinds of painful conditions in the back, neck, shoulders, and legs, as well as improving the results produced by any other bodywork techniques. Body Rolling is structured for bodywork practitioners to use with their clients, and the anatomical language is somewhat technical. Still, the exercises are well illustrated, and there's no reason readers with a certain amount of fitness knowledge can't do these routines themselves. If you really get into it, you can order more flexible, reinflatable balls from Zake's company.
Book Description
A revolutionary method that teaches bodywork practitioners and their clients how to feel the inner logic of the muscular system.
Each body has its own logic, its own language of release. This internal logic is at the heart of Body Rolling, an innovative technique that uses a ten-inch ball to stretch muscles, freeing restrictions in the body, increasing blood flow, and promoting healing. Body Rolling teaches "touch and tell" anatomy; you learn to physically find the origin of a muscle and sense what it feels like for that muscle to fully release. Experiencing first-hand the interrelationships in the muscular system comes as a revelation to most bodywork therapists. Body Rolling is an excellent treatment for a number of conditions, and it can re-teach muscles to move effortlessly and painlessly. It creates structural changes that are positive, permanent, and powerful, and that prevent new injuries from occurring.
The author explains the underlying principles of her technique, shows how to get started, and gives instructions for basic side, front, and back routines.
Detailed chapters focus on treating specific conditions such as lower back pain, neck problems, and the effects of aging.

Not light reading - A technical book for correcting real musculoskeletal issues.......2006-10-15
This book is not a good intro into body rolling if you are a lay person. It is designed to present routines to be used as corrective exercises and for training her instructors.
For a good intro, buy the kit and the DVD and the newer book.
If you are really "motivated" and understand what the muscle origin and insertion is and are interested in rolling through and releasing various levels and layers of muscle tissue, then buy the book. I own both books, and unlike most authors, did not find any redundency between the two.
Your body will thank you.......2005-01-25
This is a technical book, as mentioned by the other reviewers. I am a certified personal trainer but I had to think pretty hard sometimes to visualise where I was supposed to be during the exercises. Due to that fact I also purchased Yamuna Zake's second book 'The Ultimate Body Rolling Workout' to fully understand the exercises in lay terms.
I cannot express enough how wonderful Zake's program is. For years I have been working out religiously at the gym but have seen more results in a month of rolling than in a year of cardio, weights and yoga. To think all this time I could have been way ahead of the game if I had known about body rolling.
When I studied for my certification I learnt about self-myofascial release to undo muscle spasms and relax muscles. Zake's work is an extension of that, but by using a ball instead of a foam roll, one can really work muscles that have ceased to function optimally. If you have cellulite you will finally be able to get rid of it as you massage over the connective tissue and break up deposits.
Not only are the physical benefits of body rolling impressive but your emotional wellbeing will be high. After a body rolling session, especially for the back, you are left with an amazing sense of relaxation and a release of all tension.
One can use sports balls to do this workout, however, I recommend purchasing a body rolling ball from yamunabodyrolling.com to get maximum benefit from the program. The balls are very durable and are made of thick rubber - they are much thicker than a regular inflatable ball.
So, I gave this book 4 stars out of 5 because of its very technical nature. However, I give the body rolling workout 10 stars for what it has done for me. Get Zake's second book and you will be very, very happy.
A breakthrough in self-exploration.......2002-02-02
This book is not for the person who wants an easy fix. But for anyone willing to put in the time it is just this side of miraculous. You will likely add inches and flexibility to your ribcage - increasing room for your lungs and other internal organs (I added 1-1/2 inches in 3 weeks). Your posture will improve, and as a result, you will likely add to your height (I added 1/2"). But best of all, you will look and feel rejuvinated. I have done yoga, weight lifting, walking, running - all the normal stuff. Body Rolling beats it all hands down for relaxing and energizing your body (and face - I added a face routine of my own based on the same principles.)
It helps to have a knowledge of anatomy, but, with one of the anatomy books she lists at the back, this can definitely be acquired as you work through the protocols. This will increase the time it takes to learn these routines - I found just working the back to take about 1-1/2 hours the first time or two. But now it takes about a half an hour. Additionally, in areas where you are very stiff, ie: the rib cage, you may end up very sore for awhile, requiring ice and heat, but stick with it, the results are more than worth it.
Technical - For Professionals and Wannabes.......2002-01-04
I figured out on my own that rolling on a ball was a very effective way to deal with my back problems. According to the book I even figured out the exactly correct size ball for my size. I figured that this book would provide some great additional info. Frankly, it probably does, but the terminology and assumed knowledge of anatomy is so great that I quickly got glassy-eyed.
Bottom line: The technique is great, and the book is informative, but unless you have a technical background in body work, or are highly motivated to learn about this technique on your own, it's too difficult of a read to get a lot out of.
For Massage Therapists, Body Workers...ONLY.......2000-06-20
This book was not written for the lay person. It was meant for Therapists or anyone else with a good working knowledge of Anatomy. Seek out someone certified in Body Rolling if you don't have these requirements. Make your life easier. Or wait until they release a Video. The basic idea behind Body Rolling is to work from the bone to the tendon to the muscle. Working from the origin to the insertion creating length. It has great therapeutic uses. Don't judge it until you've tried it.

A very informative book. a good buy for learning and understanding Shiatsu. I bought the book Used from Kristine's World of Books and was very pleased with the condition and the quick service I got. Thanks to both of you, Amazon and Kristine's.I will buy used again.
Complete introduction to shiatsu.......2000-08-28
One of my favorite books on shiatsu, I always recommend it for beginners. It contains the essential in 190 pages. Easy to read and to consult, well explained. Drawings are well done and give a better understanding than a lot of other books that have photos. Covers all the practical aspects (a.o. meridians, stretching, breathing, diagnosis), and offers a basic shiatsu session. Nice comments and helpful tips. Goes into important details, but not 'overloaded'. Excellent! No bla bla.

Great Book!.......2006-12-17
The images in this book are not bad at all! I respect the authors ways of showing the techniques involved in giving a particular massage.
Not for the faint at heart.......2006-03-02
I just wanted to warn whomever is considering purchasing this book that it has explicit pictures of "self-massage" as well as the Tantric Sexual Massage with pictures included. The rest of the book looks well laid out but I was very surprised and not at all happy with this purchase.
Book Description
Learning how to give a massage has never been easier! With the help of a 60-minute CD, plus this comprehensive workbook, it’s simple to master a variety of basic techniques (stroking, kneading, knuckling, friction) and routines. In addition to instructions for a full-body massage, there are more focused ones that relieve such common ailments as backaches, tension headaches, and eyestrain. And there’s special attention given to vulnerable groups—pregnant women, babies, and the elderly—who can benefit from the healing touch, but who must be treated with extra care. An introductory section covers all the practical preparations, and an entire chapter is devoted to choosing the right oil—complete with recipes for some of the best.

massage book.......2007-08-23
this is an interesting and easy book to read. I've read it over and over and find the techniques suggested to be great.
very informative.......2007-01-10
Great book for a couple or just to learn from. I'm going to try this out soon with my future love on Sunday. Looks like it'd be a good start to go through before getting intimate with someone. It seems to cover nearly all the things needed in doing it successfully. Good tips on certain oils also. From my experience the last few days I think your future significant lover would be thrilled to take turns or pages with this.

complete book of chinese health balls.......2007-01-16
I should have ordered this book years ago. The information in this book answered all my questions and gave me a detailed history and purpose of the Health Balls. I have been a guitarist for over thirty years and highly recommend this book with the use of any type of chinese health balls.
Good Intro to Chinese Medicine.......2003-01-05
I initially purchased this book because I was looking for a kind of guide to using Chinese Exercise Balls 101. Aside from the occasional typo found in the book Ab Williams writes a rather amateurish introduction to Chinese medicine beginning with Taoism, Yin & Yang, the various meridians found along the physiological plain and concludes with a short blurb about use of and benefits of the exercise balls. The last third of the book is devoted to pushing various authors titles in all things eastern medicine oriented. You could probably find a more detailed book for less money at a used book shop but for my purposes I gave this particular title two stars.
