5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource.......2007-09-27

This book is an excellent resource for an ESL class or for someone learning Spanish. The entries are accompanied by pictures and organized in a logical way for reference. Like most Spanish Dictionaries, this is more geared towards Spain, but good for Latin American Spanish too. We live in Mexico and are learning Spanish. We refer to it often. It's fun to just browse through as well. Excellent investment.

5 out of 5 stars Great noun resource for students of English.......2007-05-28

I'm an ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher and use these dictionaries in class. My students inevitably want to buy their own copies and are delighted to find that they are available in bilingual editions for many languages.

The categorical organization of the dictionaries and the inclusion of many everyday items makes them very valuable for those students who are living in the U.S. (and presumably other Western English-speaking countries). My only criticism would be that they don't include any computer-related terms; this could be addressed in a new edition.

Speaking of which, I haven't switched to the so-called "New Oxford Picture Dictionary" because it has far fewer vocabulary items.

Despite the bilingual editions, I don't consider these books to be as useful for English speakers trying to learn a foreign language as for English learners living in the U.S., because the content and categories reflect shopping, homes, services, clothes, and so forth as they are experienced in the U.S. and similar countries.

Another potential area of disappointment is that the OPD should not be one's only English dictionary, since, being pictorial, it is suited to nouns but not to verbs or concepts. As a noun dictionary, it's excellent.

I have not used the extensive additional teaching materials that are available for these dictionaries.

5 out of 5 stars The Oxford Picture Dictionary, English-Spanish Edition.......2007-04-05

This is a wonderful book and very useful to anyone learning spanish or english.

5 out of 5 stars Incredibly Useful.......2006-12-27

I work in a restaurant staffed with mostly spanish-speaking workers so I bought this book to assist in communication. The organization of terms and the comprehensive nature of the book make it invaluable. My Mexican co-workers want copies for themselves!

5 out of 5 stars A Great Resource.......2006-11-11

Trying to learn even the basic rudiments of a new language requires much memorization and practice. Good visual aids are a must unless you are especially gifted in languages (or grew up abroad). This dictionary is a great aid to learning important everyday vocabulary. The organization by themes (food, health, clothing, work, everyday language in different settings) make it easy to use if staying in a Spanish speaking country for a while. I am currently enrolled in a beginning college level class and use it for review and new words. The visuals are easier for me to remember than straight flash cards, although I use both.

Book Description

In Against All Enemies, Richard Clarke warned about how we were conducting the war against terror. In his bestselling first novel, The Scorpion's Gate, he demonstrated what could happen. And now, in Breakpoint, America's preeminent counterterrorism expert and #1 bestselling author shows us all what might come next.

The global village--an intricately intertwined network of technology that binds together the world's economies, governments, and communication systems. So large, so vital--and so fragile. Now a sophisticated group is seeking to "disconnect the globe"--destroying computer grids, communications satellites, Internet cable centers, biotech firms. Hard to do? If only that were so.

Quickly, a dedicated team of men and women assembles to try to track the group down, searching through right-wing militias and Russian organized crime, Jihadist terrorists and enemy nation-states. But the attacks are coming more swiftly now, and growing in destructiveness. Soon, they will reach the breakpoint--and then there may be nothing anybody can do.

In an exclusive video message for Amazon.com customers, Richard Clarke introduces his new novel, and explains why, as he says, "sometimes you can tell more truth through fiction":

Reviewers everywhere praised the suspense and pace of The Scorpion's Gate, the vivid depictions of war, espionage, and bureaucracy, but most of all they hailed its authenticity. "Unlike most novelists, the man has been there and done that," said The New York Times Book Review. "Some of us," added The Washington Post, "have learned to listen when Richard A. Clarke has something to say." And we'd better hope they're listening now.

1 out of 5 stars I can't believe I read the whole thing!.......2007-08-10

Richard A. Clark is NOT an author. His character development is non-existent. I could care less whether the protagonists live or die. Each of his "heroes" is a mavarick with unbelievable talents and connections. They've been everywhere and done everything. The government is called "foggy bottom" where the CIA,FBI and every other agency are very slow and very ignorant. The heroes are outside of the mainstream of plodding bureaucrats. The character "Jimmy" actually asked his female associate to come with him to the bar for a drink. He wanted her there in order to stop other women from hitting on him"! You see, he's married to a gorgeous investment banker and doesn't want to disappoint the girls. The bad guys are politicians, millionaires and military types. The good guys are Chinese Communists, Russian mobsters and criminal computer hackers. This is so stupid I can't believe it!

3 out of 5 stars Is it possible?.......2007-08-07

This appears to be a little preposterous--but then again, you never know...good summer read, and good for computer geeks!

3 out of 5 stars Weighty Ideas, Flimsy Storytelling.......2007-07-30

I'm normally a big admirer of novelists who build their stories around well-researched and thought provoking concepts. The controversy at the heart of the novel (whether the converging sciences of genetics and information technology should be embraced as the next phase of human evolution or regulated to avoid the demise of humanity) is probably the most vexing issue we will face in the twenty-first century. And one cannot fault Richard Clarke for his research or insider's knowledge of global politics and the defense industrial complex. The problem is that the story and characters feel contrived, existing solely to allow the author to drive home his message. The editing of the book is also surprisingly poor for a major publisher, the numerous typos and grammatical errors having the unfortunate effect of undercutting the book's overall credibility.

One day there will be a thriller worthy of this subject matter. In the meantime, readers interested in exploring these weighty issues should stick with the non-fiction work of Ray Kurzweil, such as "The Age of Spiritual Machines."

4 out of 5 stars The New Technology Versus The Neo-Luddites.......2007-07-14

This novel by veteran writer Richard A. Clarke centers itself around the accelerating technological advances of such items as nanotech, stem cell advances, and human-level A.I., among other things, that come into conflict with entrenched opposition. Unlike a previous reviewer I found this novel easy to read, in a flowing style, and the conversations between the various characters had a natural feel and rhythm, professionally written indeed, with a very good plot. And Clarke really has a gem of what could be considered 'near term hard science fiction', and he does'nt rsort to quasi-religious myth-making with it's associated supernatural nonsense, as many writers have done to sell books to the masses. Not only is this novel about technology that is more advanced (or may soon be, as this book is located in the year 2012) than many people are aware of, but it is also about unchecked political power (sound familiar?) and irrationalism.

Clarke does, in a round-about way, rightly brings up the idea that these advances will have to be examined in the future, with controls of some sort perhaps placed here and there, for our safety. But as he notes several times in this novel, if controls in the USA are placed on the research and development of new technologies, the work will go underground and/or overseas...and this appears to have already happened in the real world. I firmly believe that if a person does not fully embrace these new technologies over the next several decades he or she will be literally left behind. At the end of this book Clarke has written a synopsis of the current level of development of the various technologies mentioned in the novel, interesting, and he also states that this novel is meant to be predictive.

3 out of 5 stars A Bait-and-Switch Job that wasn't so bad after all.......2007-07-10

My friend Peter Nyheim, the info-tech guru for the hospitality
world gave me this book. "It's not very good" he said "but
you've gotta read it.

He was right. The opening chapter of Breakpoint is riveting
in the styleof so many military thrillers. We're placed in
the cockpit with the pilot who sees the fire as truck bombs
destroy the fibre-optic cables that carry internet signals
in and out of the country.
The scene is riveting and personal. Unfortunately, it's the last
thing in the book that's at all readable. The rest is one-dimensional
characters speaking unbelievable dialog in service to a plot that's
so predictable as to be annoying.

So Peter was right about the not-very-good part. He was also
right about the gotta-read-it. If it's true that our infoassets
are so badly covered that they could be destroyed that easily,
then we're in trouble. A report on the state of internet security
never would have received the attention (or the royalties)
that this book got, so fiction was certainly the way to go.

But just as there are thoughtful ways to protect the national
security, there are thoughtful ways to write fiction. Let's hope
that Richard Clarke hires a writer next time or at least an editor.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2007-10-10

I am a beginner at making music and this book has been extremely helpful. Detailed and clear instructions show the experience of the writer. Can be quite technical at times but better more than less information. Well worth the money!

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Manual to Dance Oriented Music - The only One You Will Ever Need........2007-06-23

I received my copy of this book from amazon.com today - probably the best book purchase (in terms of how to & reference) that I have ever came across. The book not only goes into depth about the various dance music styles, but also theory, MIDI, sampling & synthesis, processing, recording, mixing, promnotion and tools (to make the music).Keep in mind that this book is over 500 pages, so it has a tremendous amount of information; unlike the 150 to 200 page books of this ilk.

I am very impressed in how the terms while technical (if you are not well versed in it) are easy to follow and absorb. Even though I have a lot of the detail down to memory, I was more than happy to read what was there as a refresher.

There aren't many pictures in this book, which may or may not be of use to others, but they aren't really necessary in my opinion. Ido think that Chapter 20 - websites is too long and detailed since it is not the main focus of this book (consider it a bonus if you need the info).

All said, I five this book a 5 for content, breadth of topics covered, and ease of use. Essentially anyone from a beginner to a pro can find things in this title to be useful. This book and possibly a book on in depth recording (audio engineer's handbook) would be all you ever need in your music production library. You could also add a book on artists (in genere of your choice) for a complete set.

5 out of 5 stars An essential guide for any Sound Engineer.......2007-03-09

I have a good knowledge already of how to engineer and produce tracks but this book taught me a thing or ten. Layed out in very logical chapters, it explains everything really clearly (simply but not simplistically) with great illustrations and examples.

I am about to buy another two copies of this book to give to friends. :o)

5 out of 5 stars Like sound design?.......2007-01-10

Excellent book on sound design and engineering. It will also teach you Dance and House tricks! Do you have a stutter in your song? You should! This book teaches you how! Also, there is an indepth explanation on effects and mixing. You could even make up a snare drum from scratch using your LFO. An easy read if you are a sound engineer. There is a good section on HTML if you are especially interested in composing your own website. I recommend you having a Synth module (hard or soft) and an effects unit so you can apply the techniques in there. I liked the special chapter on the pro gear thats used in Dance music- a little outdated but thats due to the publishing date. If you are a musician put on your sound engineering and design helmet. Author is a professional and knows his stuff. I read it many times because once is not going to cut it! This is an indepth instructional manual. If you want to make Dance music this is a must! Please don't try to read it in one day...this is not a novel! Take your time and re-read and learn!

5 out of 5 stars Best kept secret for dance music production.......2007-01-09

This book should have 6 stars, really. I have read this book 3 times, and still refer back to it. Covers every aspect of production in detail, from sound design, to composition, to arranging mixing and mastering.
Some of the tools he describes may be a little dated, but the techniques are still very valid.

5 out of 5 stars Not much written about timecode.......2007-06-18

I professionally work in the field of computer based digital video and know that there simply isn't much written about timecode. This book is a great reference, I have used it to successfully implement VITC and LTC encoders/decoders in software, timecode math libraries and the like. This is the book I refer to and recommend when these often confusing topics arise. I have used the first two editions but have not seen the third. I hope it adds more information about digital production.

In the non-Aristotelian, non-Euclidean, non-Newtonian space between the walls of the Museum of Jurassic Technology in Los Angeles exist bats that can fly through lead barriers, spore-ingesting pronged ants, elaborate theories of memory, and a host of other off-kilter scientific oddities that challenge the traditional notions of truth and fiction. Lawrence Weschler's book, expanded from an article for Harper's, is, at turns, a tour of the museum, a profile of its founder and curator, David Wilson, and a meditation on the role of imagination and authority in all museums, in science and in life. Mr. Wilson's Cabinet of Wonder is an exquisite piece of "magic realist nonfiction" that will prove utterly captivating.

    Book Description

Pronged ants, horned humans, a landscape carved on a fruit pit--some of the displays in David Wilson's Museum of Jurassic Technology are hoaxes. But which ones? As he guides readers through an intellectual hall of mirrors, Lawrence Weschler revisits the 16th-century "wonder cabinets" that were the first museums and compels readers to examine the imaginative origins of both art and science. Illustrations.

5 out of 5 stars The author is in on the joke ... if it is, in fact, a joke.......2007-06-16

Splendid little read, profound in its own way, and outright devilish. Absolutely in keeping with its subject matter; anything shy of devilish would have been cheating.

The Museum of Jurassic Technology, to trim descriptions to the bare minimum in the interests of time and of not spoiling the fun, is a museum that may or may not be entirely a joke on the part of its owner. If it is a joke, it is the most ornately gilded, realistically depicted, and intellectually rewarding joke yet perpetrated on the good citizens of California.

Lawrence Weschler may or may not, himself, be in on the joke. The whole thing, if it is not a joke, is a delicious insight into what the modern world has gained and lost, and an attempt to restore some of what's disappeared.

Well worth the two hours of reading. If I had more time, I would certainly recreate the research that Weschler did when he started to get obsessed with the MJT.

5 out of 5 stars A most amazing journey with an elloqent guide.......2007-04-20

Honestly, when I worked in Culver City, I would drive by the Museum of Jurassic Technology and wonder just what was in there. I read the articles in the L.A. Times and still I could not understand what it was about. And even when I finally got to the museum, I was mystified. What was the connection? What was it all about? Finally, I have my answer. And more. This book was a superlative read. Mr Weschler never flags in his focus and his precision of language and yet doesn't overwhelm his subject matter. It would be so easy to try and write a fictional story about the museum as opposed to trying to distill and tell the real story. It is very slippery! You will not be dissappointed in this book. And you don't have to go to the museum to enjoy it. But if you read the book, you will be COMPELLED to visit the museum.

    3 out of 5 stars An Education.......2007-01-04

Although Mr. Wilson's Cabnet of Wonders is at first slightly confussing and plotless, much like the type of museum disscussed in the book, it is eventually leaves you with a sense of...well...wonder. The book is construsted to take you through the wonders of a "wonder cabnet." I found it to be an education on what it mean to learn, that wonder is a nessisary component.

    5 out of 5 stars A Journey into Wonder.......2006-05-11

Lawrence Wescher is not writing a complete treatise on wondercabnets for use in an academic historical society of previously learned fellows. It is much too short and easy to read for that. He is coming at the subject as a newcomer and hoping to bring some of us in with him. I for one am right there. Mr. Wilson's Cabnet of Wonder serves as a perfect introduction to this ultra-fascinating subject that has surprisingly huge implications on our everyday understanding of history. His short summations of the history of the museum itself, and what might be housed within them, are to the point and well researched (I would like to think he threw in a few of his own "made up" references just to keep in the spirit of things although). The anecdotal stories of his mystic encounters with Mr. Wilson are humorous and enlightening. Weschler encourages a healthy skepticism about each exhibit in the MJT (Museum of Jurassic Technology), and indeed about every bit of knowledge we are taught as fact in our upbringing. The wonderful thing about this skepticism is that it leads him on an astonishing journey into The Church of Wonder. He made me a believer in Wonder as a state of mind/heart that perhaps shouldn't be questioned too much, lest we lose it. Be it wonder of Nature's endless imagination or that of man's, I'm hooked.

Therefore, Weschler not only writes about Mr. Wilson's wonder-filled collection, or simply the history of other collections, but they are merely the means to an understanding of that blissful state itself. I began to understand this book as a more of a religious conversion, than a "fact" filled catalogue.

5 out of 5 stars Knowledge through Tangent and Explosion.......2006-02-24

This book is so fantastically interesting. The way Weschler describes the modern curiosity cabinet of David Wilson is not through bland description; much like Wilson himself, Weschler weaves stories and ancedotes into his narrative. The book wraps itself up with a spiraling metaphor which does nothing except leave the reader wanting to visit Mr. Wilson's museum and explore the world of knowledge through tangent and mere coincidence.

3 out of 5 stars Personal Review For Music Projects With Propellerhead Reason.......2007-07-07

I found this book very interesting as it shows the basic setup stages of "Propellerhead Reason 3" As I am a professional in music production, I found some of the infomation a bit to basic and not really what I was looking for. On the other hand it helped me with a few confusions but other than that, I more or less already know what to do within "Propellerhead Reason 3!" I think this book is very good and therefore is a good start for beginners in the electronic music scene, however it can also help out the odd pro with one or two things that you might have not known!

all kidding aside, its a great book. I was a little put off by what seemed to be a lack of actual song structure. The book is designed to walk you through exercizes to get you used to using the software in this manner. The author encourages that you follow along b ut to create on your own. The book is like having an experienced friend lookin over your shoulder and offering advice. Its definitly worth the price of admission.

    Book Description

Can one explain the power of global capitalism without attributing to capital a logic and coherence it does not have? Can one account for the powers of techno-science in terms that do not merely reproduce its own understanding of the world?
Rule of Experts examines these questions through a series of interrelated essays focused on Egypt in the twentieth century. These explore the way malaria, sugar cane, war, and nationalism interacted to produce the techno-politics of the modern Egyptian state; the forms of debt, discipline, and violence that founded the institution of private property; the methods of measurement, circulation, and exchange that produced the novel idea of a national "economy," yet made its accurate representation impossible; the stereotypes and plagiarisms that created the scholarly image of the Egyptian peasant; and the interaction of social logics, horticultural imperatives, powers of desire, and political forces that turned programs of economic reform in unanticipated directions.
Mitchell is a widely known political theorist and one of the most innovative writers on the Middle East. He provides a rich examination of the forms of reason, power, and expertise that characterize contemporary politics. Together, these intellectually provocative essays will challenge a broad spectrum of readers to think harder, more critically, and more politically about history, power, and theory.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Mitchell continues to innovate.......2004-03-23

Timothy Mitchell writes consistently on the Middle East in ways that challenge the presupposition of field. This book is a collection and revision of many studies previously published, but they are integrated into a whole to provide insights into new ways to consider. The conclusions thereof are wide-ranging, highlighting the falsification and fallacies of behind the reasoned application of universalized logics capital and techno-politics to Egyptian particularities.

Mitchell's most powerful and provocative insights occur in his essays on the history of peasant politics in instances of malaria epidemics, colonial agricultural policies, and violence and the establishment of private property and land 'reforms'. This work likely can bring its insights to bear are on any research currently being done on the Middle East.

5 out of 5 stars Thoughtful and envigorating.......2003-07-27

Mitchell's "Colonising Egypt" transformed my experience as a student in Egypt, so I was looking forward to this work from one of the best minds in in Middle East Studies. "Rule of Experts: Egypt, Techno-Politics, Modernity" does not disappoint. Mitchell's work is self-reflective, de-orientalized, thought-provoking scholarship. Mitchell not only connects contemporary political and postmodern theory to his Egyptian primary sources, but he extends theory in new directions and unique interdisiplinary ways. Mitchell empowers the reader to think critically about the negative influences of power and hegemonic discourse on policy and scholarship to create distorted representations and self-fulfilling, self-replicating prophecies. We need more writers like Mitchell to question and challenge the current theory and expertise that has so much currency and momentum in the echo chambers of the Washington Consensus.

The essays cover a wide range of 20th-century topics from malaria to mapmaking, from the manipulated image of the peasant to techno-political nonsense in current development praxis. I have long believed that developmental applications of modern economic theory are very much a "faith-based" process, and Mitchell has put these thoughts in engaging prose. In addition, I was particularly impressed by the chapter on violence, which helped me frame my own thinking on violence, for example, in Syria, Algeria, or Tunisia, places where not so hidden violence functions as an instrument of power and social control. Mitchell writes eloquently on issues that have troubled most of those who work or live or travel in the developing world and who have not found the right language to express their reservations about the descriptive and prescriptive power of current scholarship and techno-political expertise.

If you have read Mondo 2000 before, then nothing in this book will be much of a surprise. In fact in 1998 this book is clearly retro. Still, to the new reader you will find much of the information interesting. The format is basically an A-Z of popular memes and cultural phenomena with a pseudo hypertext interface.
High gloss and flashy. Suitable for a coffee table, but you might want to keep it on your reference shelf.
