Wonderful story........2007-09-17
This book is tastefully written, not scary, but led to good discussion about boundaries- with anyone he knows or doesn't know, and serious thought by my 3 1/2 year old son. He asks for the book about once a month, and refers to "touching problems" occasionally in general conversation, saying something like "you don't keep touching secrets and you say 'Stop it! I don't like that!' if someone tries to put their hand in your pants, and go tell Mom!"
It's a little shocking when your baby gets a grasp of something like that, but I'd really rather that be the case than the first time he knows of it is with a previously trusted person that betrays that trust. It's not graphic or detailed and doesn't attempt to explain why a pervert would do such a thing. It appears serious to him and has caused him to talk with me and plan his response (just like what to do if he became lost in a store), but it's no more scary to him just from reading about it and talking about it than a toothy shark or scary shadow in another book. I highly recommend this for parents brave enough to tackle this subject before your child starts attending birthday parties alone or going to neighbors' houses to play.
Every parent should read this book.......2007-08-31
This book provides the details all parents need to have to protect thier children. It gives great tools for parents to use. I will purchase this book for all my friends as baby shower gifts!
Excellent book!.......2007-05-13
This book helped to reinforce what I had already taught my 4-year-old son. He asked questions that he hadn't previously asked and opened up new discussion about the topic. It's well-written, common sense approach makes it easy for pre-schoolers to understand. The author is a therapist, which made me feel confident about the quality of the content.
We love this book........2007-05-12
My son and I read this book a couple of times a week. He even tells me now what he thinks is a "good touch" and a "bad touch". I recommend this to all parents!
Very informative and Easy to Understand for kids.......2007-01-05
I don't think it's an Easy subject for parents to talk to their kids about, So this book opened the subject up for me. It's hard to talk about, But an Absolute Must in the World Today. It talked about bad touch and Good touch like tickles, then the mom told her son a story about a little girl. The story was a Real Life possibility because it was a neighbor asking a little girl if she liked Kittens (what kid doesn't right?)then he asked her if she wanted to come see them at his house. The book states " since she knew this person she went with him" giving you the opening to explain it's not just strangers that can hurt you. The man wanted her to sit on his lap, then he tried to put his hand in her [...], she ran home and told her mom. Then the guy got in trouble. The mom telling the story to her son Then talks about it to him so he knows to tell her if something happens. Then they get into talk about what is Private on your body.... So here's on thing I wasn't Comfortable with.... The book has an illistration of the mom and son looking at a book, and their book has a picture of a little boy and girl naked so they can identify "private Parts". EASY FIX, My husband Took a Marker and Drew a pair of underwear on the little boy So it wouldn't be an issue. So you could just draw a bathing suit on the little girl, or underwear on the little boy If you're not ready for those pics if you have younger kids.
Overall the illistration are Great, not Scary, and just draw some underwear on the naked pic if you're uneasy about that. I would Buy this Book for any kid getting ready to Go to School or a Friends house.

READ RIGHT.......2007-07-21
I THINK THE BOOK HAS A LOT OF INFORMATION ON HELPING YOUR CHILD BE A BETTER READER. THIS IS A GREAT RESOURCE.
EMPOWERING KIDS IN READING.......2007-01-11
We just published a new parenting magazine, North Star Family Matters and the goal is to empower kids. This book made me understand why what I did in raising empowered kids worked and I recommend it especially for parents with newborns to five year olds. The explanation for how a brain creates connections, how we as parents can most effectively create an environment to maximize the child's potential from the inside-out applies to every area of child development, not just reading. It changed my understanding dramatically and I wish I had it when my kids were infants as my daughter would have never been dyslexic. Not only that, but we asked them to write a column for our magazine because of the dramatic, transformational effect this philosophy can have on parenting in general and reading specifically. If you are looking for a quick fix with a child that already has reading problems, the book is just the first step. So the goal is to learn what's in hear when your child is young! Dynamite.
Not for older non-readers.......2006-06-26
The techniques that comprise the bulk of this book are aimed at children just beginning to read. For older non-readers, the only answer seems to be to contact the author and pay for her tutoring program. I have sent e-mails to the address and have not received a reply.
A wonderful gift to everyone wanting to read. .......2005-11-12
Around ten years ago, my grandson Sam was not able to read at the end of the first grade. Within three months after Dee's instructions, Sam was able to read very well. Today, Sam in high school is studying Greek, Latin, Italian and a little Chinese. Imagine where Sam would be today without Dee's help?
Her book is fascinating. Easy to read and easy to follow. What amazes me is that the book gives away all of her secrets. As a parent the book will help you guide your child to become an excellent reader. If you know an adult with reading difficulties, Dee's work will help them also.
My advice - get the book today.
THERE IS HOPE!!.......2005-09-19
I wish that this book was published one year ago when I enrolled my 9 yr old son in the Read Right Telephone Tutoring Program. It truly explains all the reasons his Read Right Tutor coaches him the way she does along with the meaning of *excellence*. I could tell the program worked, I just didn't understand the *hows* and *whys*. Now I do.
I would highly recommend the book AND the program for anybody at any age. The program works and my sons tutor seems more like a family member than somebody whom we have never met face to face.
The Read Right Program gave us hope when there was no place else to turn for our son. By having this now published book, I am able to share with his teachers why Read Right works and why the other programs in the school have not. His teachers are also now able to understand his needs as a Read Right student and what they can do to help him with his journey.
Thank you Dee for explaining your story and giving us all hope.

Rosa Parks.......2007-02-01
This is a wonderful book for children. It teaches them about segregation, and about being brave and standing up for your ideas.
Great story...Too bad it was true.
a book that captures the history of the civil rights era.......2006-10-29
This book was well received by our 6 yr old granddaughter. It is a book that can be read with a youngster. It captures the spirit of Rosa Parks in easily understood language.
Rosa Parks.......2003-05-06
This book is a great read for a young child...maybe K-2nd grade. It was good at laying out for the reader the life of Rosa Parks.
Next to Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks is remembered!.......2002-08-03
Rosa Parks is best remembered as the Black woman who refused to give up her seat on a bus to a White person. However, she was much more that that. She was raised by grandparents because her mother taught school in another city. Her grandfather was the child of a slave owner and a slave. Rosa was determined to make a difference for her people. She and her husband took part in supporting the Scottsboro boys, Black youth who were accused of crimes they did not commit. Rosa became secretary of the NAACP and contributed greatly to her people, eventually receiving the Congressional Gold Metal award.
I AM ROSA PARKS.......2000-03-27
This book is about a girl that had to give her seat up in a bus for a white person. She did not get up so they called the police. The police arrested her for not getting up.Then when Rosa got out of jail she made a statement saying, " Why do black people have to give up for white people?" They compromised and the black people do not have to give up there seat anymore. I liked this story because if Rosa Parks did not say anything we will be still separated from black people.

Crucial to understanding the economic and political crisis in Haiti!.......2007-06-13
For activists interested in learning more about the recent U.S. military intervention in Haiti which resulted in massive human rights violations and the kidnapping of left-wing president Jean-Bertrand Aristide, this brief anthology of essays and Democracy Now! interviews is an excellent introduction. As the poorest nation in the Western hemisphere, Haiti, a former French colony and current victim of World Bank/IMF structural adjustment programs, has suffered years of U.S. sponsored dictatorships and paramilitary violence. As a former Catholic priest who preached liberation theology, Aristide fought to improve the lives of Haiti's enormous underclass who for centuries have endured horrific levels of poverty, illness, political repression, illiteracy, and environmental destruction. For this transgression, Aristide, like Jacobo Arbenz in Guatemala and Salvador Allende in Chile, was seen as a threat to mulitnational corporate interests and overthrown. As the global justice movement maintains its focus on Venezuela, Bolivia, Chiapas and the Middle East, it's important that we also not forget the situation in Haiti. Here, in the United States, we must also not ignore the plight of Haitian refugees who face criminalization and/or deportation as a result of racist immigration policies and who, like gay and bisexual men, have been scapegoated for the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Despite the poor reviews other people have posted on this website, I found this book to be a very educational and thought-provoking tool to help us better defend the poorest and most oppressed members of human society.
Misleading title..........2006-02-12
This relatively short book is titled incorrectly. The title is derived from a statement from Ambassador James Dobbins talk on NPR, but it does not relate the actual content of this book. Also, to say the authors of this book are Noam Chomsky, Paul Farmer, and Amy Goodman, is misleading. Noam Chomsky has a short introduction (9 pages), which is not really all that informative. Paul Farmer's portion was a bit more interesting. Paul Farmer has many years experience living and working with the Haitian people and has written more in depth analysis of Haiti and the occurence of oppresion of third world countries in his books The Uses of Haiti (1994) and Pathologies of Power (2005).
The majority of this book is made up of transcripts from Democracy Now! radio and television broadcasts, and while a good introduction to the situation as it occurred in 2004, it does not adress any thing about steps to remediate the years of US and French backed coups. It does not explain the statements made by either Aristide and his supporters or the claims made by US officials - such as claims of corruption, etc.
The coverage by average US media organizations of this entire event was rather poor, much like the current coverage of the elections taking place currently in Haiti.
Badly written propaganda........2005-12-03
This is without a doubt the worst written account of the current Haitian political situation I have read to date, full of innuendo and unsupported opinions. If I wanted to read a political paphlet I would have gone to a rally.
The one redeeming feature of this pamphlet is the bodyguards account of what exactly happened in the hours prior prior to Aristide's force out, and the role of the Steele foundation.
If you want decent haitian history book look at "Written in Blood" and do not waste your money on this.
Title doesn't really reflect material........2005-07-12
Although this book offered some interesting transcripts, I was interested in reading through a comprehensive set of issues matched with potential solutions (since that was what the title implied to me).
A clouded assessment.......2005-04-28
I"m a big fan of Amy Goodman's work as a writer & a journalist but this book falls short. Perhaps Goodman sees Haiti through the lens of East Timor where she spent considerable time in the Nineties. But Haiti isn't as black & white a situation. There are many right & left wing factions with actors frequently changing sides. She also does not question Aristide's claim that he was kidnapped by the US govt. See Paul Farmer's The Uses of Haiti for a better intro to Haiti.
Book Description
Unlike most girls of her time, Susan B. Anthony received an education. And besides reading and writing, her schooling taught her that women should have the same rights as men, above all the right to vote. So from the time she was a young woman until the day she died, Susan worked very hard to change America and make her dream reality.
Book Description

But Patches may have her own ideas about whose cat she is.
Book Description
From the civil rights revolution to the halls of power, the life story of a larger-than-life American leader.
As a student in Atlanta, Vernon Jordan had a summer job driving a white banker around town. During the man's afternoon naps, Jordan passed the time reading books, a fact that astounded his boss. "Vernon can read!" the man exclaimed to his relatives. Nearly fifty years later, Vernon Jordan, long-time civil rights leader, adviser and close friend to presidents and business leaders, and one of the most charismatic figures in America, has written an unforgettable book about his life and times. It is a story that encompasses the sweeping struggles, changes, and dangers of black life during the civil rights revolution.
After attending a predominantly white college in the midwest and graduating from Howard University Law School, Jordan became involved in the civil rights movement. He led the voter education project to register black voters in the South, and was president of the National Urban League, one of the great civil rights organizations of the era, where he was instrumental in integrating American businesses and providing economic and social support to the expanding black middle class. He survived a white racist's assassination attempt and later became a pillar of America's legal, corporate, and political worlds.
But Jordan's life was shaped in his early years, and this book is also a moving testament to the family whose support and courage provided the framework for his achievements. Vernon Can Read! is a remarkable memoir of a life of courage, pride, sacrifice, style and accomplishment.
Customer Reviews:
A Piece of History.......2007-03-31
A fantastic book detailing the magnificent journey of a tremendous American! This book is packed with historical facts about the lives of Black people in America. Vernon Jordan was born in 1935 and although he did not live through slavery, he certainly lived through the Jim Crow days. However with a good father and a strong mother, he didn't just survive - he flourished. Yes, Vernon could and did indeed 'read'. The names of people mentioned in this book are dizzying. This man dealt with a wide range of people in his career.
I loved the potent messages that came through with great clarity. Such as "never expect defeat before making an honest effort" pg.2 or pg. 277 his beliefs in concerted efforts..."each person or group using their abilities, contributing what they can to move things forward." I must also mention how happy I was to note Jordan's love for the women in his life; his mother, his invalid wife Shirley - who died at age 48, and his daughter Vickie - the apple of his eye.
A good read, but leaves something out.......2006-08-12
I also never heard of Vernon Jordan before the Lewinsky scandal. I am very glad I read this book. It is a shame that many Americans never heard of his interesting and enlightening story about coming of age in the civil rights era. That seems to me to be the theme of this book, that the civil rights era opened the doors to places of power not dreamed of before, if only one had the ambition and the character to find them.
Like a few other reviewers, I also wish that the author revealed more about the period between when he was in charge of the Urban League. This period is when he made his contacts with very many powerful people in charge of corporations and institutions, received a fellowship at Harvard Business School, and started on his way to become a 'power broker'. I guess if you read between the lines the corporate/foundation contacts made him beholden to the business community, and then retiring from the Urban League to work for a powerful Washington law firm gave him a 'power broker' title. But its not really enough to make the connection, is it? And what about those Bilderberg meetings, Vernon? We would like to know more.
A peek inside an extraordinary mind........2005-06-28
Read this book. Mr. Jordan not only provides insight and anecdotes about many events and individuals in American civil rights history, his words also give us a glimpse of the workings of an incredible mind. His memoirs are filled with stories and recollections proving that desire, determination and accountability to self and others are crucial for success in any of life's endeavors. Simply stated, I'm inspired.
We need the Unauthorized Biography........2003-11-03
This book is an unfortunate piece of near puffery: much form, much superficiality, little substance. But what does one expect from a Power Broker? Truth or Dare?
In keeping with the unwritten Power Broker Creed, Mr.Jordan reveals very little about the inside mechanations that made him who he is (as opposed to who he was). That is to say, the book speaks volumes about those life experiences that made Vernon Jordan the moderate civil rights leader he was years ago, but says exactly nothing about the transition from that leadership role, to the man who had the president's ear (not to mention the man who kept his secrets)and the ear of the REAL powerful people in this global econonmy: the corporate mavens for whom Vernon was (is?) paid handsomely to dish out advice and counsel to.
We never hear in any detail about how Jordan quietly but persistently accumulated the power he achieved and, indeed, what motivated him in this pursuit. And no, I was not interested in any Monica dirt: Monica and the whole presidential thing, was (and is) beside the point when it comes to a rigorous Jordan analysis. That whole episode merely served as a template (and not a particularly good one) for the kind of back scratchery at high level that Jordan has been doing for years.
But then again, what does one expect? People like Jordan (and mind you, I am a big fan of his)live by the aforementioned unspoken creed: power is best accumulated and exercised quietly. Thus, one does not reveal the secrets of the kingdom to just any average reader (by the way Vernon, what really does go on at those Bildeberg confrences?).
We will not get the whole unexpurgated version of Jordan's life until some biographer decides to swim against currents and put one together.
Those of us interested in reading something much more telling than Jordan's superficial telling of the story of his life will have to wait. Just as we similarly anxiously awaited biographical treatments of other quiet power brokers in the Clark Clifford, Tommy "the cork" mode (the wait is soon over for those of us interested in Tommy the cork and, thanks to the same author, was over several years ago for a good analysis of Clifford's life. CLifford's own biography, Counsel to the President, left much to be desired, too).
As a high school to college level autobiographical treatment of the life of an important figure in post-world war II america, Vernon Can Read suffices. As anything deeper, it does not.
Vernon can certainly Read, but what Vernon wrote certainly leaves alot to be desired.
This book should be in every African American's home.......2003-03-07
I listened to the unabridged audio cassette version of Vernon Can Read! This is a wonderful book. It has many dates and events in African American history of which Mr. Jordan contributed to, experienced and/or witnessed. These events are not only significant in the life of Mr. Jordan but also in the history of African Americans. The book is well written and easy to read and/or listen to. I told my five year old son about the experience of young Vernon Jordan and Mr. Maddock. It was inspiring to my son and we often listen to that portion of the tape while driving home from school. Mr. Jordan wanted the book to inspire his children and grandchildren and I suspect that it has. The book has also inspired my son. I highly recommend this book.
