5 out of 5 stars Wonderful tool for ages 5 and up!.......2007-09-19

I have to say that all 3 of my children have been helped by us navigating this book together. I homeschool them and each has had 'worries' about one thing or another that they have been ruminating over. We just started a garden this year (growing tomatoes) so this book was PERFECT for us because the author uses the analogy of a tomato plant that you water and care for every day producing a HUGE bumper crop of tomatoes.. and the worries that you give much time and thought to every day 'taking over' your time and thoughts. It was especially helpful when we got to the chapter about setting aside 'worry time' for each child each day and working through their worries using logic. All 3 of my children (ages 5, 8 1/2 and 10) have reduced their worry time / anxiety since we began our 'group study' of this book. We are still working through it.. and it is GREAT!

5 out of 5 stars A Great Resource.......2007-09-08

As a therapist I am always looking for new resources. This is one of the best for treating anxiety. I had one child this week say "did you type this just for me?" because it resonated so well.
Check out Ms. Huebner's other books on OCD and Depression--they are great too!

5 out of 5 stars A must-have resource!.......2007-08-13

I highly recommend this book for social workers/therapists and other professionals who work with children. It is definitely kid-friendly; my clients have been open to using this book because it feels more like a fun activity rather than "therapy".

5 out of 5 stars very helpful book.......2007-07-14

This book is an excellent resource for the professional or parent of a child with anxiety difficulties. It explains the various ways that a child can less the effects of anxiety in child appropriate language with places for the child to customize his or her feelings and thoughts. Very well done.

5 out of 5 stars Kids can relate to the ideas in the book........2007-07-10

When your child's anxiety overtakes and consumes their joy, you'd buy 200 books if they'd help your child to feel better. Don't buy 200 books... BUY THIS ONE for your child.

My daughter is 9, but reads at 8th grade level, so I was a bit apprehensive about getting this book for her; fearing she'd think it was too baby-ish. Much to my surprise and delight, she loves the book! She says "I love the pictures. It's kind of funny and I like that it has activities to do. The book has good ideas about how to fix my worries."

The book does have great kid-friendly concepts like: Worry Time and Worry Bully, with places to draw and write down thoughts. It not only addresses how worries can take over, but empowers kids to fight back and reassures them that when they do, the worries will get smaller and smaller, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY...LOSE THEIR POWER OVER YOUR CHILD.

The book talks about the positives of getting rid of worries, like giving kids more time to play with their friends instead of worrying. Simple concepts perhaps, but written in a way that kids relate. The concepts are ones that both kids and parents can easily remember and refer to, which also helps when the Worry Bully shows up unexpectedly.

Other books that have helped my daughter:
Worried No More Worried No More - Second Edition: Help and Hope for Anxious Children by Aureen Wagner, PHD (this is an excellent resource for Cognitive-Behavioral therapy support; workbook pages in the back...) and the meditations books for children by Maureen Garth: StarbrightStarbright--Meditations for Children, Moonbeam Moonbeam: A Book of Meditations for Children, and Earthlight Earthlight (read together before bedtime to help your child visualize a safe, quiet place before they fall asleep...).

Book Description

This is the same diagnostic system I use with my own clients and with the financial advisors I train. So, going through it will be like having me sitting beside you, whispering in your ear, guiding you every step of the way.”

–from Your Complete Retirement Planning Road Map

Corporate pensions are disappearing. Social Security is in trouble. And the sizable postwar generation is reaching retirement age. With the futures of millions of Americans at stake, Ed Slott, the country’s foremost retirement planning advisor, now offers expert advice on weathering the perfect storm of financial instability that looms on the horizon. Your Complete Retirement Planning Road Map, Slott’s most essential and accessible book yet, provides clear step-by-step directions through the highways and byways of IRAs, 401(k)s, 403(b)s, and other major accounts.

In five helpfully focused sections, Slott combines crucial facts with interactive checklists and questionnaires (those he uses with his own clients) to teach investors and beneficiaries alike the best way to save and to maximize an inheritance. Inside you’ll discover

• My Account Inventory: an overview of every retirement savings account you own, whether you’re thirty or sixty-five–from what it is and where it is to who gets it and how, plus where to put important data for easy access and where to store your essential documents (hint: not in a safe-deposit box)
• The Account Owner’s Care Solution: how to properly fill out retirement account beneficiary forms so that whatever amount of money is left in your account after you’ve fully enjoyed retirement will go to whomever you choose and not to relatives who suddenly pop up out of nowhere
• The Account Beneficiary’s Care Solution: what to do when you inherit so that you won’t lose any of the tax benefits and other opportunities your benefactor has created for you, or make a mistake that could wipe out an inherited fortune that took years to build up
• The Special Issues Care Solution: how to handle the out-of-the-box issues that could affect you or your beneficiaries (e.g., life events such as divorce or incapacity; tax issues for unmarried partners; decisions about trusts)
• The Follow-up Care Solution: how to keep your planning on track and make adjustments when circumstances change, and how to determine whether your professional retirement advisor is really up to the task of preserving and protecting your money
• Plus: the most up-to-date information on tax laws, including the Pension Protection Act of 2006, which provides major new retirement incentives that you can take advantage of

Your Complete Retirement Planning Road Map is an indispensable planning solution that is sure to become the standard how-to on a complex subject that is becoming relevant to more people every day.

5 out of 5 stars A Financial Guide, not a Complete Guide.......2007-02-19

To me the title of this otherwise excellent book is somewhat misleading. It should say something like 'Your Complete FINANCIAL Planning Road Map.' That is, it doesn't go into things like should you move to the sunbelt, or how much money will you need, or medical aspects or any of these other subjects. Instead it is a very complete discussion on the tax issues of investing for retirement.

This book talks about IRA's, and Roth IRA's, and 401(k)'s, and all the other alphabet soup of the tax system in the United States. It is complete and up to date as recent as the 2006 changes to the tax laws.

A major part of the book consists of check lists that you should go over as part of your retirement/estate planning. These also are very well thought out and force you to think about things you would otherwise ignore.

A minor complaint, these checklists are printed in the book. I'd much rather see them on the web or in a CD bound into the book. He says you should fill them in using pencil in case you later want to make changes. I'd like it better to fill them in on a computer and then print them out. Once again, the information is there and more complete than you'd imagine, so you can consider this a minor complaint.

small pamphlet, not a full size book. Rambling and repetitious. Read it twice and couldn't extract any useful information that wasn't available in other sources.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and Infinitely Practical--A Must Buy for Every IRA Owner.......2007-01-23

Ed Slott's latest book, Your Complete Retirement Planning Road Map provides the most comprehensive, infinitely practical, hands-on set of checklists I have ever seen for IRAs and retirement plans. Ed, perhaps the best known and most trusted author on IRAs and retirement plans, takes the reader step-by-step through important concepts regarding IRAs and retirement plans and provides the reader with an action plan. Ed really rolls up his sleeves and gets into the nitty-gritty. Another outstanding feature of the book is that Ed has included the best questions--with complete answers--gathered from his clients and readers over the years. Chances are if you have a question, it has been asked of Ed, and you will find your answer. If you buy Ed's book and follow his recommendations, you will be better prepared and better documented than 99.9% of all the IRA and retirement plan owners.

5 out of 5 stars Mastering the complex with simplicity.......2007-01-22

I have personally been studying with Ed Slott in his Master's Elite IRA Advisory Group for the past two years. This new book is a composite of the various modules we have been studying in depth. This book gives an excellent overview in a version to be understood and simplified so that many can be aware of the many issues present in dealing with the one asset that for many represents their largest financial position. I applaud Ed's efforts to make such a text available and appreciate the opportunity I have had personally to train in depth in all of the issues detailed in his book. I would also commend serious readers and investors to his two earlier books my favorite of the two being, Retirement Tax Time Bomb and How to Defuse It. Anyone with a large IRA should be aware and get the book. It could make a tremedous difference in who ultimately winds up the beneficiary of all your hard long years of labor.

4 out of 5 stars Same Rules, Easier to Understand.......2006-12-30

I have read all three of Ed's IRA books. As a Financial Planner, I find the Retirement Savings Time Bomb to be the best. However, if you are slightly less versed in tax code than a professional planner, his newest book is an excellent tool. I strongly recomend it to all (non-financial professional) qualified account owners. Good Job Ed!

Book Description

From a fear of spiders to panic attacks, kids have worries and fears, just like adults. But while adults have access to a lot of helpful information, that hasn't been true for kids—until now. Drawing on his years of experience helping children deal with anxiety, Dr. James Crist has written a book that kids can turn to when they need advice, reassurance, and ideas. He starts by telling young readers that all kids are scared and worried sometimes; they're not alone. He explains where fears and worries come from and how the mind and body work together to make fears worse or better. He describes various kinds of fears and suggests ten Fear Chasers and Worry Erasers kids can try to feel safer, stronger, and calmer. The second part of the book focuses on phobias, separation anxiety, OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder), and other problems too big for kids to handle on their own, and explains what it's like to get counseling. Includes a special "Note to Grown-ups" and a! list of resources.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful conversation starter.......2007-10-11

This book was wonderful and a tool I'll use with my 9-year old son again! It was a conversation-starter because I was able to learn things that made my son anxious about that I wasn't even aware of and he felt less isolated because I completed the activities with him and was able to show him that everyone fears some things.

My son really enjoyed reading it and it was a great bonding opportunity.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to read and understand.......2007-09-24

This book has been a wonderful resource for my anxious child (and for me). He is able to turn to this book full of strategies and real life examples independently to not only reassure him he is not different or alone but also give him insight and control of the anxiety producing situations around him and his reactions to them. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect!.......2007-08-23

This is a great book for anyone working with children. I lays out everything you need to address anxieties and it lables the anxieties for what they are - I love that. Includes forms, activities, and little stories that children can relate too. This is an excellent guide to get you going when working with children. Would also be useful for parents to read to increase their understanding of the disorders.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE FOR CHILDREN WHO HAVE FEARS........2006-10-12

I have read this book with my two boys ages 8 and 10. We all have anxiety in different degrees and I am trying to help them to learn to cope and move forward. I cannot recommend this book enough to loved ones and parents who have children with fears or worries that are causing problems in their daily functioning. I have read many books on this subject and never found one as good as this for children and even for adults to use. I would not think twice about buying this book if anyone in your home struggles with fears. Bravo for finally writing a book on this subject that children can use. Childhood is where we need to begin to help in this area.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best self-help books for children ever written.......2004-06-11

As a child and family therapist, I am constantly searching for books to use with the children that I work with. I am usually disappointed with most books that address problems of childhood, because they either treat the subjects too lightly and offer no real solutions for children who have already used the obvious ideas, or are far too complex for the average child to relate to. This book is wonderful. Not only is it written in extremely child-friendly terms, it is comprehensive and gives many good-quality, proven techniques for dealing with fear and anxiety.

Topics includes: what kids are typically scared or worried about, where fears come from, how the body and mind work together to make fears better or worse, "fear chasers and worry erasers" (coping skills), written exercises, and a chapter on more intense fears including phobias, separations anxiety, generalized anxiety disorder, panic attacks, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder. The book finishes off with a chapter that answers children's questions about what to expect from counseling, should they need extra help overcoming their fears. A note to parents is included, which offers additional information on how to support children with their fears.

I highly recommend this book, and wish that the author would write many more books like this one!!

Most parents don’t know how to recognize when there is a real problem and how to deal with it when there is.

5 out of 5 stars A very helpful book!.......2007-08-26

I really enjoyed this book. It was very user friendly, and showed how to help your child, by giving you the appropriate language to use to explain feelings of anxiety/fear and how to take charge of them.

5 out of 5 stars sleep problems.......2007-08-24

my daughter has not slept n her bed alone for 8 years. she was always scared of the dark. We have tried everything and nothing worked. I bought the book and taught her the how to handle things using the books ideas and she now has slept in her bed all night allnight by herself for 1 month. The book is wonderful and can imply to all types of anxiety problems and is a great book for parents. Praise God for this.

4 out of 5 stars Freedom.......2007-08-11

Any parent who has the unfortunate circumstance to pick-up this book and learn how to cope with their child's anxiety will find it very informative and helpful. More importantly it will help your family down the road towards freedom. Freedom for your child to understand their feelings of anxiety and begin to relax and enjoy their childhood experiences. Freedom is also attainable for the parents, and other siblings, to have more productive days without dealing with the amazing stress of altering daily actives to meet the needs of your anxious child.

Dr. Chansky does a great job at explaining anxiety in simple terms that a parent can use to help explain to the child and re-assure him/her that the problem is not their fault. There are practical steps outlined that helps the child understand the differences between "good" thoughts and "anxious" thoughts. Dr. Chansky then breaks down different anxieties that are most common in children and provides exercises for the parents to break the anxieties down and build a foundation to change the child's thinking patterns that lead to the anxiety.

While the book is laid out in a very easy to follow format, and devotes sections to your child's particular problems, I think the book should be combined with some professional help depending on the severity of your child's issues. It is a great tool to be used when working with your child to begin removing anxious thoughts, but as a non-professional I found certain exercise (although very helpful) opened the door to larger discussions that I was less prepared to help with.

A good book that will prepare parents and children towards successful freedom

5 out of 5 stars Grateful.......2007-07-06

Best help yet for dealing with our son's anxiety. It was like learning another language and I use the dialogue daily. Especially for a parent who does not have an anxiety issue, it really helped me to understand what a struggle it is to be in a state of constant worry and how to quit saying "there's nothing to worry about". For this book I will be eternally grateful as it is helping to change our son's life back into what a nine year life should be; birhtday parties, sleepovers and play dates, not hanging out with mom worried about the next separartion.

5 out of 5 stars Such a helpful, informative book.......2007-06-27

This book is an absolute must for a parent of a child with anxiety issues. Chansky informs about various anxiety disorders without sounding alarmist or condescending. There's comprehensive information and it's presented in a practical, easy-to-understand way. This book should probably be your first purchase if you're trying to help your child cope with anxiety.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars This Book is really "Old School".......2007-08-19

I've been an anxiety sufferer for a few years now. I've had PTSD (from active combat in the army), OCD and panic attacks. Bournes two books (this book and his workbook) help manage the anxiety, but don't fix it. This book may be good for a psychologists repeat business, but is little use for a person who suffers from anxiety. Bourne was the leader in anxiety related problems about ten years ago, but hasn't moved on with the new discoveries that have been made. For my anxiety problems I found The Linden Method or Panic Away method to be greatly superior. Neither of these concepts are even covered in this book, so I would not recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Common sense information for a good price.......2006-11-10

Very common sense approach to dealing with anxiety.

5 out of 5 stars The bridge to recovery.......2003-08-26

I've danced around with generalized anxiety disorder and panic attacks off and on for several years. So, I've read many, many books. After my symptoms restarted recently, I found this book. This is a great book to read after you understand the various mental and physical sources and symptoms of anxiety disorders.
This book helps you put your knowledge to use and create your own healing program.
It's simple, yet comprehensive, covering diet problems that can exacerbate anxiety, thinking patterns that cause anxiety and relaxation techniques to use when you're experiencing anxiety or when you're just taking relaxing time for long-term healing. But, you still have to decide which techniques will work for you and use them every day. This gives you many options in a simple, straightforward format.

5 out of 5 stars Simple, concise, very readable.......2003-04-06

This book offers a concise, easy-to-read version of Dr. Bourne's previous work. It presents a wealth of useful information on how to handle anxiety in just 150 pages. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Not Just For Anxiety.......2003-03-28

This book is informative, well-written, and is an easy to read guide for coping with anxiety. But it is more than that. We live in a world of stress, and that world can seem overwhelming at times. This is a guide that can be helpful for anyone struggling to cope with challenges in life. I highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars I would have given this book five stars, had I ever read it........2007-01-10

Gods do not want me to know what Dale Carnegie wrote in his book. First time I ordered it, the dimwits from the post office lost the package. By the time that fact became firmly established, Amazon did not have any more copies in stock and issued a refund. I ordered then from one of the Amazon sellers, but few weeks later got another refund. And today, I have received an e-mail, asking me to review few earlier purchases, including this book. The e-mail had a convenient link to the reviewer's page. So, here you go: happy to oblige!

4 out of 5 stars A good read but..........2006-11-03

I really enjoyed reading this book. It was amazing how relevent it still is and how little people truely have changed. This book is a must read. The only complaint I have which prevents me from giving this book a 5 star rating is; a few sermons scattered mostly towards the end of the book. I really didn't appreciate them. After a person gets past this I would recomend this book, and have recomended it to friends with the cautionary comment about the 'sermons'.

4 out of 5 stars New Title Suggestion: How to get laid in 60 minutes........2003-03-26

The very first time I applied these techniques in a bar, I simultaneously made out with 2 gorgeous women. This book has changed my life... What more can I say?

There are, however, some points that must be cleared up before you apply the techniques within this guide.

1.In many cultures, it is considered rude to ask personal questions of a relative stranger. (ex: "what do you do for a living.")

2.In today's legal environment, you may be held liable if you begin an argument by telling your opponent they are correct. (Ex: saying "I'm sorry" at a traffic accident.)

5 out of 5 stars A must have.......2002-09-08

This book was written in the early 1900s and still is very effective today. I found this book to be essentially "priceless". Whatever I describe here would not do justice to what this book deserves.

Believe the other reviews, I bought this book based on them and am very glad I did. Very easy to read, very long but something you do not want to put down.

5 out of 5 stars I may be wrong but let us examine the facts.......2002-01-22

You know this book only got a 4.5 rating which made me curiuos. After scaning through all the review, i found that some actually gives the lowest rating there is to the book. I was upset.

Still it was no surprise that they don't like it. You cannot satify everyone. But then some of this reviews does sound misleading which in turn gets on my nerve.

I mean how many times do you come across a book that does exactly as what its title said? Tecnical book maybe, but self-helps? And how many self-help that put a title so bold as this one in the first place? The thing is,this book delivers. You might have to apply it constantly to be good at it and sometimes it might even be difficult but it delivers.(it takes time)

The other thing is this book doesn't teach you to lie or decipt. Although some may do that after reading the book but then it's not because the book teaches them to be evil, only simply because they are unethical. It is like saying cloning is bad because poeple can use the technology to create an army of super human. Like science, the book doesn't tell how to use your knowledge but only tells you how to do it.

Sincerity. The book does to emphasize on it in order to not confuse its principles as evil. So, why does people still get confuse? As I understand, the defination of sincerity (in virtue terms) means performing something like helping other people
or giving something away with hoping for reward or anything else in return.
So does winning friends. You may become popular or well liked but don't hope for anything in return if you are sincere. It is because of people hoping for too much when applying this principles that they gives 1 star for the book. -sigh-

The other thing I was upset are reviews that like the book but doesn't gives full star for it. Why? Don't they realised that there is no other book like this one?(ok there is another one) Dale Carnegie wrote self-help like how it should be written:
1. Include priciples of successful people.(two years research)
2. 8 years of research through experience of thousands of people.
3. No "the best way to [insert action] for me is this, this, this and so I hope you would follow my style of doing things".
4. An introduction that says "Why do I bother to write another book, and after I have written it, why would you evenbother to read it. Fair question and I shall try to answer them both..."

As Carnegie himself said, this book is not born out of the ivory tower. If you think that there is a better way to write a self-help book, tell me and then find a book that is written that way. Betcha can't.

5 out of 5 stars THE CLINICAL PYSCHOLOGIST praises The Worry Cure.......2007-09-16

Worry is not only ubiquitous to the anxiety
disorders, but brief, less severe manifestations
of this cognitive phenomena are pervasive throughout
the general population. Who amongst us has not
worried at one time or another? Moreover the deleterious
effects of chronic and severe worry are not confined
to a specific disorder like generalized anxiety
disorder but instead are a major symptom feature of
some of the most common mental health problems in
our society such as major depression, social phobia,
and substance abuse. In the daily routine of a clinical
practice, therapists repeatedly face patients who
feel defeated by a crippling state of worry. And yet,
it is surprising that worry was practically ignored by
clinical researchers until the last 10-15 years. Until
recently the empirical literature had little to offer the
treatment of worry and even less was available for
the general public in the form of scientifically based
self-help books.
All that has changed with the publication
of Robert Leahy's book entitled "The Worry Cure".
Written in a systematic, instructive, and well-illustrated
manner, Dr. Leahy explains the nature, etiology,
persistence and treatment of pathological worry
in a style that is readily comprehensible to the general
public. Although the book is rooted in a cognitive
behavioral perspective, it is not dogmatic in its theoretical
orientation. Findings from mindfulness cognitive
therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy,
and emotion-focused therapy are discussed in terms
of their relevance for the treatment of chronic worry.
Throughout the book Dr. Leahy remains true to the
empirical traditional by ensuring that his insights into
the nature of worry and its alleviation are anchored in
the latest empirical research on worry. When recommending
this book for their patients, clinicians can
be confident that the guidance offered in its pages is
based on the latest findings in the research literature.
illustrations.
The chapters are full of rating forms and
other clinical aids to help individuals implement
the recommended changes in their thinking and
behavior. What is particularly innovative in these
chapters is the focus on generic interventions
that can be adapted to any type of worry content.
Chapters 11 through 15 deal with worry associated
with specific issues such as concern about negative
evaluation and acceptance of others, abandonment
and rejection, health, finances and work or achievement.
These chapters deal with topics so common
in clinical practice that it is difficult to think of
patient who would not benefit from reading at least
selected chapters.
In many respects the title of this book, The
Worry Cure, is a little misleading. Although this
definitely a self-help book on worry, it's contribution
is so much greater. Even if you did not suffer
with worry, there is much to be gained by reading
The Worry Cure. For example the chapter on dealing
with failure is probably the best clinical advice we
have seen on the topic. As well the chapter on financial
worries provides creative insights into a pervasive
problem in our society that rarely receives
the attention of clinical writers. In short, The Worry
Cure is an authoritative, clinically rich, and practical
handbook for dealing with worry in all of its
various manifestations. The therapist will find this
a valuable bibliotherapy tool when treating anxiety
and depression. It is also an indispensable source
of psychological knowledge on worry and its treatment
for all mental health practitioners. It should
be required reading for any student of psychotherapy.
If I could choose only 10 clinical texts for my
library, The Worry Cure would be one of them!.

4 out of 5 stars Unique and usful only if you dare to use it.......2007-07-08

Great and useful book overall. Has some interesting and unique perspectives on dealing with toxic worry (think generalized anxiety).

Dr. Leahy, the worry specialist, who is a well-respected writer of many professional books, fills pages with a lot of ways to attack this stubborn anxiety, reaching into many disciplines (philosophy, cognitive therapy, behavioral therapy and so on).

The information is very useful, especially, if you move beyond cognitive distortion methods and address some "deeper level" issues such as examining core beliefs about oneself and the world, meaning of a threat, uncertainty, and rumination. All crucial stuff.

It seems to me, someone who is anxious has some difficulties with facing his own anxiety and is prone to procrastination and avoidance as this anxiety protects itself violently and tries to survive by putting out so many obstacles. So, I am saying the next sentence with great caution as don't want to discourage anyone from this helpful book. However, I got a bit overwhelmed by this book's abundance of material and it's deep daring level. If you dare to venture into this deep examining on your own, I wish you courage, however, I think it would be better suited for someone who has already started dealing with his/her anxieties rather than a newbie. Maybe for someone who has a support of a therapist or someone who is super-motivated-although I don't know anyone like this. It's definitely meant for someone who is very psychologically-minded and intersted in the way mind works.

Having said this, if a self-help book is your choice of medicine, please know the book's usefulness and its broad scope surpasses many other books on the subject, and could be of immense benefit to a sufferer.

Also, I was very surprised that there were no chapters on learning to relax physically with guided muscle relaxation, breathing control, exercise and meditation. Very useful stuff that you can find in many general anxiety books, but somehow very often overlooked by writers of many cognitive therapy books.

If I may suggest two great primers that are easier to use for a newly diagnosed who is willing to take "baby steps": Anxiety Workbook by Edmund Bourne, and the second, Mind over Mood, by Podesky. Once the system is in place, everyone would benefit from this book, which has lots to add to move you futher to the worry cure (if it ever existed :-))

5 out of 5 stars The BIBLE of the worrier-99.9% of honest society!!! 20*******'s.......2007-04-26

No other book has so radically challenged and CHANGED the way that I have perceived and reacted to situations as Robert Leahy's THE WORRY CURE.It is intensely practical,down-to-earth and so readable that it is not only a continued challenge to me,but a must for daily living. This is not a book that spouts platitudes, but rather a book of such common sense and wisdom that I find myself amazed at the silliness of my own thought processes and the joy of seeing myself undergoing a successful and daily change at the age of 52!This book is the most valuable resource that I have ever come upon in dealing in the realms of cognitive (behaviour-thought changing) therapy. Many of formally accepted and taught coping mechanisms that I had adopted, which never worked, have now been dispelled and new mechanisms to live have been grafted into my daily existence and, believe you me, they have been found positively to be 100% effective. Many people may not feel that they are worriers.I certainly never thought that worry was my root problem.Read this book. You just may find out that worry is that elusive "something" that has unknowingly been plagueing you ,your mind, your body and your soul all these years.I first borrowed this book from the library, but you will want to own your own copy as you will be underlining and highlighting and making many marginal notes and referring again and again to the practical therapeutic suggestions that Leahy postulates.

5 out of 5 stars My new best friend is Robert Leahy, MD.......2007-03-25

Dr. Leahy is authoritative, learned, witty and wise, eloquent and compassionate, etc, etc.
This is more than a mere self-help boof for our time. It is certainly that. But it also offers a spiritual path that will inevitably lead to emotional freedom and potential bliss.
Thanks, Dr. Bob!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-03-03

I have the audiobook version and highly recommend it, the narrator is excellent. This book has almost immediately changed my life and explained things to me in a way no one ever could. The author knew exactly how I think, why I think that way, and used that to break down (in relatively seemingly simple) ways to help. Worriers are generally deep thinkers and highly analytical people and a simple "Don't stress about it" from friends just doesn't help. Amazing book!

Amazon.com Audiobook Review

"Those who don't know how to fight worry, die young." This ominous advice begins Dale Carnegie's bestseller, How to Stop Worrying and Start Living, an eight-part treatise on the follies of worrying. Like other Carnegie books, this one is packed with good old-fashioned common sense, illustrated with examples drawn from research on historical figures and interviews with business leaders. Somehow, even the most simple advice--such as Carnegie's four-step method of problem solving--is presented in a way that makes you want to write it down and post it on the employee bulletin board. Narrated by the resonant and engaging voice of Andrew McMillan and loaded with relevant real-life examples, this unabridged audiobook maintains interest throughout. 5 out of 5 stars READ IT and then READ IT AGAIN!!!.......2007-10-09

I loved this book. The second time I read it, it was even better (it helps to highlight.) The chapters on service, rest, and prayer are the most valuable. Even though this book was written ages ago, worrying is timeless, and everyone does it. So...everyone should read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommend........2007-09-21

This is a great book, I never really considered myself a worrier but looking back now I guess any worry is too much. This book gives real life stories of other people who kicked the worry habit and there will probably be one story in there that will make something click for you and allow you to look at things differently.

5 out of 5 stars Impressive!.......2007-09-09

5 out of 5 stars Chock full of Life-improving lessons.......2007-09-03

Dale Carnegie has unknowingly had such a positive impact on my life. I learned as many critical lessons in his books as I have learned in 16 years of traditional schooling. In the 1980's, HOW TO WIN FRIENDS AND INFLUENCE PEOPLE made me look at others and see where they are coming from. It made me a better friend, a better work associate, a better club member, and a better businessperson. Then in 2005, I listened to the entire unabridged recording of HOW TO STOP WORRYING AND START LIVING. From start to finish, it was loaded with stories, relavant stories, of people just like me and how worrying got them nowhere. And most importantly, this book teaches you how those people learned to LET GO of their worry and truly, start living differently. Since reading this book, I can much more easily let go of things that used to tear me apart and made me sick thinking about. I wish the author was around to thank, but somehow you just know he knows. And the mere fact that these books are still bestsellers today ought to tell you that they are valuable, worthwhile reading, and worth their weight in 24k gold.

5 out of 5 stars I am so happy to have this book.......2007-07-22

I've been dealing with an issue over the last few months that has worried me to no end. I saw this book in a bookstore a couple of weeks ago, purchased it and started reading it. Each time I do, I feel much calmer and am reminded of the fact that some things are out of my control.

One quote out of many helpful ones in this entertaining book is "When the fierce, burning winds blow over our lives - and we cannot prevent them - let us, too, accept the inevitable ... And then get busy and pick up the pieces!"

I want, no I NEED to internalize the messages of the book. I'm going to read it, then I'm going to read it again with a highlighter. I'm going to take several of the quotes and type them and post them strategically all over my home and car and office. I'm also going to order the CDs and wake up and fall asleep listening to them. I am determined to lead a life free from worry. With "How to Stop Worrying and Start Living", I know that I can.

By the way - it's not that every second of my day is consumed by worry. But far too much of it is.

I most highly recommend this book.

I didn't like the book at first. But that is characteristic of anyone seeing something in themselves that needs to be changed. After going through the book 3 times and using it as a practical guide I am remembering how to like myself again. My "what if's" don't have to rule my life.

This will probably be the only self-help book you ever need if you follow the Self-coaching techniques the author recommends. Logical, practical advice without fluff aids in identification, understanding, and most importantly, fixing of many problems that may have previously seemed beyond your ability to resolve.

This is an original and powerful book by the guru of self-coaching, Dr. Joseph Luciani. If you are looking for a detailed step by step approach to feel as mentally healthy as possible, this is the book for you. It will not only markedly reduce your anxiety and depression, it will teach you the principles of carving out a life that is joyful and meaningful for you.
Easy to read and digest with many helpful examples from his own life as well as his patient's lives. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Read This Book!.......2007-03-20

I'm pushing sixty. I've been in and out of therapy and have been reading self-help books all my life. I ordered this (the CD version) with little hope. Not much seems new anymore.

Surprise! I was almost immediately engrossed. Luciani is wonderful. Using plain talk and simple analogies, he sums up what all the niche-marketers and long-winded "experts" are currently trying to sell us as "new." There's nothing new here. But Luciani's approach is refreshing, smart, and absolutely sane.

If you want to make a change (or changes) in your life, "The Power Of Self Coaching" will absolutely make a difference in your approach and give you information and activities that will not only show you how to change, but will inspire you to change.

How can anyone not love an author who wants his epitaph to read "I'd Rather Be Reading This"?

3 out of 5 stars Practical ways to become better at human relations.......2007-09-16

This book merely takes excerpts from Dale Carnegie's two earlier books: (1) How to stop worrying and start living and (2) How to win friends and influence people.

Rules excerpted from How to Stop Worrying and Start Living include

1. Be yourself, do not imitate others.

2. Work habits:
(a) keep your desk clean except for material related to the current problem at hand
(b) work on more important problems first
(c) when you encounter a problem, solve it right away if you have the necessary information rather than leave it lingering
(d) delegate effectively, you're still responsible for the results

3. Relax

4. Be enthusiastic

5. Count you blessings, not your troubles.

6. Remember that unjust criticism is often a disguised compliment.

7. Put in your best effort; don't let others' criticisms get to you

Rules from How to Win Friends and Influence People include

1. Don't criticize, complain

2. Give honest, sincere appreciation

3. Arouse enthusiasm through appreciation and encouragement.

4. Consider and articulate benefits to the other party in pursuing the proposed action

5. Become genuinely interested in other people

6. Make the other person feel important and do it sincerely.

7. Show respect for the other person's opinion.

8. Begin in a friendly way.

9. Get the other person to say successive "yes", "yes" immediately.

10. Let the other person take credit for the idea.

11. Appeal to the nobler motives.

12. Call attention to people's mistakes indirectly.

13. Talk about your own mistakes before criticizing the other person.

14. Ask questions instead of giving direct orders.

15. Let the other man save his face.

The habits are easy to understand and eminently practical. Reading the book will help you become better at human relations.

2 out of 5 stars Why they do this?.......2007-06-29

Why did they rehash old stuff into a new book? This book is really two books - How to win friends... and stop worrying, start living. I didn't know and I actually read both books already and I got suckered into buying this. You may say I should've read the fine print, but whatever, it's stupid.

2 out of 5 stars Product Description Was Inadequate.......2007-05-13

Dale Carnegie is an amazing author and the wisdom in this book is life-changing.

The real problem with this book is that the product description failed to mention that it is a **COMPILATION** of excerpts from 2 other books:

"How to Stop Worrying and Start Living", and
"How to Win Friends and Influence People".

I already had those two books and, so, wasted my money by buying this book.

5 out of 5 stars This book helped me tremendously.......2005-12-31

I realize that this book is simply an abridged compilation of HOW TO WIN FRIENDS AND INFLUENCE PEOPLE and one of Dale Carnegie's other famous books, the title of which eludes me for the moment. However, HOW TO ENJOY YOUR LIFE AND YOUR JOB is still a very important book on its own simply because it allows the reader the opportunity to learn these valuable lessons while concentrating on one central theme, not to mention a theme which is almost always on everone's mind with waking and sleeping: the workplace.

This book was easy to read and offered deep insight on how to work better and smarter. It's not a 12-step program or some kind of money-made-easy scheme. All the techniques in the book require practice, hard work, and a lot of patience. But by doing the best I can to employ these techniques in my workplace, I've become not only more proficient but also more relaxed, and more able to enjoy the job, even to the point at which it's no longer a drudge to have to go to work in the morning.

I highly recommend HOW TO ENJOY YOUR LIFE AND YOUR JOB.

3 out of 5 stars You'd do better to get the 2 books this book was extracted from.......2005-08-14

"How to Enjoy Your Life and Your Job" was created by taking excerpts from "How to Win Friends and Influence People" and "How to Stop Worrying and Start Living" - both excellent books. Buy those books separately or buy "Dale Carnegies Lifetime Plan for Success : The Great Bestselling Works Complete In One Volume" (ISBN: 1578660394) which contains both complete books. This way you get Carnegie's work in its complete form. I consider Carnegie to be one of the best self-help authors of all time, and that is reflected in these writings. Carnegie's work will help you improve your attitude, relationships, choices, and the results you achieve in life if you are willing to put his advice into practice. I only gave this book 3 stars because it is just a rehash of Carnegie's other books, with material cut out.
