Quite possibly every female over the age of 12 will find this huge book enlightening, pain saving, and perhaps even lifesaving. Think of it as a much more empowering and holistic Our Bodies, Ourselves. Northrup is a gynecologist who acknowledges the power of natural therapies and herbs, but also maintains that allopathic treatments, including surgery, are sometimes best. In Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom, she covers the treatment of many physical concerns--among them PMS, menstrual cramps, breast cancer, fibroids, endometriosis, infertility, depression, childbirth, abortion, cystitis, and menopause--explaining how many of these physical problems have roots in emotional upsets. For example, a woman who is unhappy with her marriage may be infertile because deep down, she knows that her husband is not the right man to have children with; a teenager who has cramps may be having problems accepting society's expectations of her as a woman.

Some readers may be put off at first by Northrup's obviously unconventional ways of thinking. Her medical approach is decidedly feminist, blaming our "addictive" and patriarchal society for many of the health problems plaguing women. She clearly illustrates her ideas, however, by drawing upon two decades of experience from her medical practice and citing dozens of her patients' remarkable personal stories. Northrup also delineates the best way to go about tuning in to one's body and mind in order to start the healing process, a self-induced therapy of sorts. She also includes in the book a copy of the eye-opening health inventory she gives her clients. It includes unusual questions such as "Are you bored with your life?" and "Do you have enough friends or neighbors?"

This book will be of special benefit to women who are pregnant or entering menopause. Northrup is an unequivocal believer in natural births and her dialogue on the birthing process will remove the fears of even the most petrified mother-to-be. She criticizes episiotomies (she should know; she's given birth without one) and supports midwifery. She also warns against the harmfulness of cesarean births and includes illustrations of acupressure points that help turn around a breech baby.

For women in perimenopause or menopause, Northrup will help turn this life phase into one of peace and personal growth instead of one of suffering. She was one of the first doctors to use natural progesterone to treat menopausal symptoms, and this revised edition includes a clear primer on the latest in hormone replacement therapy and how to determine if it's right for you. Northrup also expounds upon the benefits of acupuncture and herbalism--as well as emotional self-analysis--for alleviating hot flashes and mood swings. --Erica Jorgensen

5 out of 5 stars Look beyond the physical.......2007-10-10

This is a fascinating book, that makes so much sense. the power of our thoughts and emotions on the body has been known for a long time by the masters of yoga. This book, takes it even further and looks at the female reproductive system and its functioning from a holistic perspective and that is exciting

5 out of 5 stars great book for all women.......2007-09-27

my sister gave me a copy as a gift and I then bought a copy for each of my daughters. Every woman should read this book--actually every man who lives with a woman or girl should read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Muy sabio.......2007-09-12

3 out of 5 stars Couldn't they afford an editor? 905 pages?????.......2007-09-05

I'm sorry if this has been mentioned in other reviews. I don't have time to read them all.

But this book is too big to hold and read! It's just unwieldy. And it's very cheap stock, almost like newsprint. Even upon the first light reading, the inner binding gave way. Disappointing!

I'll keep it on the shelf, for reference, but I won't read it through.

I have enjoyed Northrup's books in the past -- and her newsletters as well -- but I feel like she's overstepping her bounds. I'm all for the study of chakras, metaphysics, etc.--sticking to straight allopathic medicine will kill you, IMHO -- and she used to give the whole smorgasbord. But now, when she doesn't have all the medical facts, she throws in a psychological/patriarchal explanation. As I mentioned in a comment to Adelie's review, the result is blaming the the victim and not offering real tools for healing. Dangerous.

1 out of 5 stars Northrup, Move Over!.......2007-08-20

Because there are REAL women's literary health guides out there. I personally suggest Our Bodies, Ourselves from the Boston Women's Health Collective. Instead of shoving unfounded, bias, and conservative information down your throat like Northrup does, it clearly explains issues pertaining to any woman of any age or background. I have extreme remorse for any woman turning to this book for tolerance and understanding concerning our bodies, minds or choices (especially the choice to have an abortion). I feel like work does nothing but spread harmful, untrue information instead of the facts. Northrup's "wisdom" is best kept inside her head.

4 out of 5 stars Highly Concentrated.......2007-08-06

I have found wisdom and guidance in Jean Shinolda Bolen's books since I read "Crossing to Avalon" many years ago. This book is short and pithy. Very short and very pithy. It is, in fact, concentrated...like sun-dried tomato paste or pomegranate syrup. My own desire would have been for more depth and development, but its advantage as it stands is in an almost haiku quality. I read it, one chapter a night, for several nights and reading it that way makes it a form of meditation. I suspect it would be a delightful gift from one woman in the crone years to a younger one just entering that stage of existence. If you are looking for honesty, humor and challenge, this is your book. However, if this is the first Bolen book you read, don't stop here! Pick up one of her others: "Goddesses for Older Women," "Crossing to Avalon," "Goddesses for Everywoman," and delve even deeper into her ideas.

Growing older in this society is a badge of honor. Bolen is a great read.

5 out of 5 stars Crone for my cronies.......2006-03-12

This book is The Birthday Gift for my girlfriends, sisters, cousins and co-workers as we turn 50. Many shudder at the word "crone" but I am proud to be entering the ranks of the wise women and continuing to make efforts to connect with women of all ages to learn and to teach. This book is great encouragement! Be Juicy!

5 out of 5 stars Very Pleased.......2006-02-25

My book arrived in great condition in a timely manner. Thank you very much for the excellent service!

4 out of 5 stars Juicy Couture Could Take On a Whole New Meaning.......2005-10-18

Jean Shinoda Bolen's latest work playfully and sharply offers women thirteen qualities to cultivate during the third phase of their lives ( Maiden-Mother-Crone). She wisely seeks to re-install the title `crone' as an aspirational honorific connoting wisdom acquired through years of living; a woman to be revered and respected.

Banish all thoughts of crones as withered and barren: crones are `juicy' Bolen maintains, having zest, passions, and soul. Adopting Bolen's approach is bound to result in a happier person who graces the world by her presence and actions. Upon entering the crone years, women can now devote creativity, energy, and time to things that matter. Having developed instincts, having endured pain, having learned the importance of meditation, crones choose their path from the fork in the road with heart. After describing the qualities of a crone, Bolen offers suggestions for ways in which crones can work together to make the world a better place. This is woman power at its core. Girl power is a mere warm up.

This sweet and wise little primer would be a perfect gift for any woman, particularly those over the age of fifty ( the unofficial start of crone-dom). It would be a dynamite book club read, and no doubt lead to long juicy discussions over margaritas!

Book Description

The Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom cards were created by Christiane Northrup, M.D., to help women reach clarity, fulfillment, and success in each of five major life areas: Fertility and Creativity, Partnership, Self-Expression, Self-Care and Nurturance, and the development of an Enlightened Mind and Heart. The deck comes with an instruction booklet that offers a variety of practical ways to access intuitive, grounded information on a number of issues.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Contains Some Great Wisdom.......2005-07-28

"The Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom cards will help you read your current energy field and show how your thoughts and beliefs are affecting your ability to create, express yourself effectively, heal, use your mind and hear simultaneously, and achieve successful relationships with others." - The author

According to obstetrician/gynecologist Dr. Christiane Northrup, the universal law of attraction operates all the time, working seamlessly through every part of our lives. We "vibrate" a certain frequency according to our thoughts, emotions and beliefs-whether conscious or not. Some of these beliefs are inherited from previous generation, and these vibrational patterns create "matches" which are mirrored in our circumstances. So if an individual is creating a scenario they don't like, Dr. Northrup asserts that this circumstance was "created" by an unhealthy thought pattern.

By becoming conscious of these patterns, we can change what is no longer working well and reinforce what is. Engaging inner wisdom coupled with openness to Guidance is the key to improving habits of thought, emotion, and behavior.

Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom Healing Cards is a 50 card deck that was designed to be used as an oracle. If the deck is approached with the expectation of receiving Guidance, says Northrup, then "you'll always pick the cards that contain precisely the message you most need to further your personal growth at the moment."

The deck is divided into five "suits" which reflect five key life areas:

* Fertility and Creativity
* Partnership
* Nurturance/Self Care
* Self-Expression
* Enlightened Heart & Mind

These "suits" are show in pastels: sage green, pale yellow, lavender, mauve, and cornflower blue. The deck itself features shiny gilt edging, just like Doreen Virtue's Magical Unicorns Oracle Cards and Kat Black's Golden Tarot.

Within each of the five "suits" are ten developmental steps that require mastery in order to progress in life or improve health. These ten steps are reflected in ten cards that remain the same for all five "suits". These ten developmental steps are noted on the bottom of the cards, accompanied by roman numerals:

I Imagine/Allow
II Prepare
III Flexibility Within Structure
IV Hierarchy vs. Partnership
V Perfection vs. Imperfection
VI Risk vs. Safety
VII Active vs. Passive
VIII Channel Clearly
IX Regroup
X Complete and Move On

So let's say you draw the number VI Risk vs. Safety card from the Enlightened Heart and Mind suit. The advice is:

"New ideas and ways of doing things are often threatening to the status quo. Have the courage to advance your ideas despite the resistance of others. Do so with an open heart and compassion for the point of view of others.

Risk keeping an open mind and heart, despite the opinion of others.

Image Note: This image shows riders departing the safety of their village and negotiating a narrow path at the edge of a cliff. Likewise, you must sometimes take similar risks to chart new territory for yourself and others."

The images on the front of each card are impressionistic in nature and derived from the work of a master artist. According to Northrup, the images were chosen for the archetypal quality and classical style, not for the historical meaning or intentions of the painter. The card backing is lovely, depicting layers of wings in blue/green hues.

The 72-page companion booklet also features eleven different spreads (card layouts) which is quite surprising. Most Tarot guidebooks don't even give you that many spreads! And they are comprehensive ones, delving into life purpose, family dynamics, chakra health, abundance, and more.

There's a lot of good information in the Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom Healing Cards, but I'm not sure how good it is an actual oracle-as opposed to a healing/meditation deck. I tried doing the 4-card Conditional Health Reading and it wasn't accurate at all. The "issues" and "advice" didn't resonate at all. For example, Card 4 advised "Become a life long learner. Expose yourself to new ideas. Take classes regularly. Resolve to remain teachable throughout your life."

As an avid reader with a love of learning, this advice was totally irrelevant to me-as was the other three cards. If anything, I could use a break from all the exposure I get from reading, listening to audio courses, practicing/learning divinatory arts such as Tarot, etc.!

It would have been nice to have had modern illustrations on these cards, as is found on most Hay House decks, rather than paintings from "masters". Despite Northrup's assertions, I don't feel the pictures themselves conjure up much intuitive information. Most of the cards feature naked women and seems more like a tour through an art gallery rather than a health and healing oracle. Still, the information contained in the booklet offers sage advice, and the spreads could be used with any oracle or Tarot deck-not just this one.

It really depends on what you're looking for, but for me, the Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom Healing Cards didn't "speak"" to me and I didn't find the card images all that attractive, either.

5 out of 5 stars Cards to Stimulate Your Own Intuitive Knowing.......2004-02-25

"Thoughts collide in the activity of expression, and the dance goes on with meanings that are beyond rational perception." ~Dancing in the Mirror by Bryan Walton

First, I must say that these cards are quite beautiful and the edges are smooth and golden. Each card shows art that was chosen purely for its archetypal quality and classical style. The interpretation of the images are meant to encourage your own intuitive wisdom.

The 50-card deck and small booklet are all you need to get started. The cards are divided into five key life areas: Fertility & Creativity, Partnership, Nurturance/Self-Care, Self-Expression, Enlightened Heart & Mind. These areas are clearly marked at the top of each card and the cards are color coded into pastel green, pink, yellow, blue and violet.

Each life area is divided into developmental steps which are represented on the ten different cards.

To use the cards you look at the image and then refer to the booklet for additional information as needed.

Of course I was a little freaked out when the first card I picked was the "Risk vs. Safety" card which might have something to do with all the messages floating my way in books and here we find someone jumping out into the unknown. I set out the "How to use your creativity optimally" reading. The first card is supposed to tell me what I've learned about myself so far. I picked Fertility & Creativity VI Risk vs. Safety. Then, the second card is about what you are learning now and I found Nurturance/Self-Care V. Perfection vs. Imperfection. Then Card three is about your next step and that said: "Channel clearly." Then, onward to card 4 where it speaks of how I can create value for myself and others: "Prepare." The last card is supposed to show my Highest purpose and it says: "Complete and Move On."

Then, you can look in the booklet to see the deeper meanings of the images on the cards. All the artwork is rather beautiful and the cards are in themselves works of art. I was very pleased to find the "Art Credits" because otherwise I would have been eternally wondering who painted each picture, etc.

From the cards I picked out I started to understand more about birthing new projects and seeing if creations will fly on their own. Am I being told that I am supposed to jump out into the unknown in some way? The third card was quite meaningful in that it explored the possibility of creating something of value for others that uplifts and assists them in their daily life. The fourth card seems to be saying I should make more time for exercise. The last card shows a woman sitting and reading beautiful books and is a painting by Bernardino Pinturicchio.

The entire process of being inspired by the cards is a highly personal one and all the cards really seem to do is bring elements to the surface of your mind. I found that it was very easy to figure out what the cards were saying because the booklet was helpful and the pictures made complete sense. Basically you are using the cards as mirrors to reflect unconscious patterns to your conscious mind. I was very impressed with the first results of using this card set, although they were a bit too accurate. ;)

You also get an education in art while you are being playful and intuitive.

Book Description

Vanquishing once and for all the tired biblical theory of woman as the cause of man's fall from grace, Imagine a Woman in Love with Herself empowers women to move from self-loathing to self-love, from self-criticism to self-celebration. It dismantles the question "What's wrong with me?" by exploring its historical, theological, and personal origins. Patricia Lynn Reilly explores 20 self-affirming qualities that encourage women to be the authors of their own lives and to cultivate knowledge and love of themselves. Each section is filled with reflections and meditations that ask readers to reclaim their inner resources and reconnect with the essential truth about themselves.

This book really got to my core as I read it! Its not a long read and it was almost disappointing to complete it so quickly but I knew I would end up re-reading the book many times. It is a beautiful novel that often left me teary or grinning. Thank you for such a wonderful piece!

5 out of 5 stars every woman NEEDS this book!.......2007-05-11

a beautiful combination of poetry, story telling, personal insight, sharing and comraderie amongst women. every woman on earth should read this, cherish it and share it!

1 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2006-12-31

Honestly, I don't even know why this book was written. While reading it I thought this sounds so odd....we should be heading towards equality and the whole part of "out of balance" is rediculous...eating ice cream and spending time with your mom and fantasizing about sex...ummm last time i checked that kept a lot of ppl i know away from medication and a lot of stress. I did not like this book at all and thought it to be a complete farse....seriously children dont masterbate when they are little....yeah they are sexually aroused but they dont go exploring there bodies and think the way Reilly is describing...its too profound and the world girl-child sounds too robotic...creepy almost like the movie Donnie Darko.

4 out of 5 stars Review .......2005-08-16

I am enjoying this book, although I am reading it at a slow pace. The chapters are divided by sections of the poems and there are meditations in each chapter-which I find helpful.

1 out of 5 stars Awful, Just Awful.......2004-11-27

I really wanted to like this book. I have been schooled in the wisdom of "original blessing" as a corrective for the concept of original sin, and well, I'm a woman. So I thought this book would be right up my alley. Reilly goes overboard, however, in rejecting _any_ attempts at self-discernment as negative. There is such a thing as self-assessment that is accepting, positive, and life-affirming, without necessarily approving of everything that we accept about ourselves.

In the end, by overlooking the necessary distinction between "acceptance" and "approval," the book limits the possibilities for growth that it can nurture. And that's a shame. It is, ultimately, patronizing to believe that women are too fragile to handle self-critique. We can be our own best critics, but this book won't help.

Conclusion: stand by with the insulin shots while reading this one.

A classic from the day it was published in 1991, Sophia: The Goddess of Wisdom is an intensely scholarly yet highly poetic work. Modern history (his story) may have buried the Great Goddess under suffocating layers of denial and revisionism, yet as we move deeper into the "sophianic millennium," scraping away the fallow ground of patriarchy, She emerges anew. Author Caitlin Matthews unveils the veiled Black Goddess (the primal manifestation of the Divine Feminine) in her many hiding places over the last several thousand years. Disempowered and hacked to pieces, she has survived in the major Western religions, philosophies, and mystery schools in many guises. With the aid of the author's trained and intuitive eye, the reader tracks Her faint footsteps through the long dark night of the feminine soul. Along with The White Goddess by Robert Graves, this book is a must-read for those who wish to understand why the Goddess fled, where She went, and how we can reaffirm Her as the giver of practical and spiritual wisdom--celebrating Her primacy in the manifestation of all things. --P. Randall Cohan

This book treats the Divine Feminine in various guises in many cultures. I found this book extremely uplifting and inspiring. The subject was treated in a profound manner, affording many deep spiritual insights. I was especially interested in what she had to say about the divine feminine in the Hebrew tradition. Ample annotations are given for further study.

1 out of 5 stars Oh well.......2004-02-05

I'll be blunt. I didn't care for this book. I bought it thinking it would delve into the subject of the Gnostic Sophia. Instead the author goes this way and that and hardly even mentions Her. I really think the title was misleading. As a sidenote, Lucifer is given a bad rap in this book and many concede that Lucifer plays an important part in later understandings of Gnosis.

The book is loaded with good information regarding the proper role of Sophia in relationship to God and to the earth. Filled to perfection of truths, that one would not have to study further. It is written very well, and very easily understood. It is remarkable how much truth she gathered with the world trying to suppress the female deity of the Godhead. All efforts to abolish the authority of Sophia were defeated upon the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls at Qumran. The writings of Jesus in the "Pistis Sophia", G.R.S.Mead, would never be accepted by churchs because they told the whole world "Jesus never wrote a book". Please read "She Who Is", Elizabeth Johnson, and "Prayers to She Who Is", William Cleary. Also, The Goddess Re-awakening" Shirley Nicholson. Of course, the writings at Qumran are in the book "The Nag Hammadi Library", James Robinson, don't skip the writing "Sophia of Jesus Christ" in this book. The woman Sophia is the Bride of God, only Bride.

Psychoneuroimmunologist Reeves guides women back to the knowing into which they were born through this thoughtful and thought-provoking treatise. With grace, compassion, and common sense, she tugs the lead of self-esteem encouraging the reader to follow her down a path toward greater self-wisdom. She explains that when we ignore "what matters most to us," that becomes "the matter with us." Then to make matters worse, because we're deaf to the voice of our embodied consciousness, we "cure" our symptoms and continue to dismiss our intuitive messages. Having greater control over our lives is ultimately what Reeves offers. "How vitally alive we would be if only we were able to develop as much confidence in what we feel and how that is moving us, as we do upon what we think and what that means to us," she exclaims. With a foreword by Marion Woodman, author of Addiction to Perfection, and an afterword by Belleruth Naparstek, author of Your Sixth Sense: Unlocking the Power of Your Intuition, this inspired lesson in self-love promises to change a woman's (or man's) life for the better. --P. Randall Cohan

Book Description

More than an old wives' tale, women's intuition is real, according to author Paula Reeves, a pioneer in the study of the biochemical relationship between mind and body. Because most women separate mind from body, many are not aware of what their intuition may be trying to tell them. In this guide, Reeves helps readers, through stories and practices, uncover the blocks preventing this singular channel of wisdom from informing their daily lives. Through years of study and practice, Reeves has developed her ground-breaking program of Spontaneous Contemplative Movement, an original, simple, and emancipating way of evoking body-based intuition. Readers can use Reeves's easy-to-learn approach to tap their own intuitive power.

5 out of 5 stars Women's Intuition: Unlocking the Wisdom of the Body.......2002-04-15

Paula M. Reeves, Ph.D. says intuition is "that sudden inexplicable insight that tells us we know something we had no idea we knew." She adds that "while it's true that everyone has intuition, not all of us have the same capacity to use it." She wrote Women's Intuition: Unlocking the Wisdom of the Body to help women learn to recognize and use their own intuition.

Dr. Reeves maintains a private practice, as well as leads workshops in psychology and relationships between the mind and the immune system. She has developed a technique called "Spontaneous Contemplative Movement" (SCM), which allows women to hear the messages their bodies have for them. SCM, done in a controlled environment, involves letting what is deep in the mind tell the body how to move, and then interpreting those movements.

She says that intuition is based in our bodies and adds that "body wisdom contains the essential truths about what matters most to a woman and ultimately to the human race as a whole. " Our bodies are constantly sending us signals, but we've forgotten how to read them.

Dr. Reeves describes how our bodies speak to us, what those messages mean in general, and how to interpret what they mean to us as individuals. She provides specific instructions for SCM. Essentially, it's a very simple process which involves paying attention to your breathing, allowing your body to move, and then contemplating the movements. She also includes chapters on soul talk, learning to love our bodies, and trusting our intuition. She finishes with a discussion of the role of intuition in healing.

Dr. Reeves also provides 13 exercises for developing and using your intuition.

She says that "it is my deep desire that through [her book], you will learn to trust your body's signals and learn to read them before they become symptoms of illness or distress." Readers will find that Women's Intuition contains the information they need to learn to recognize, trust, and interpret the messages their bodies are sending them.

5 out of 5 stars Bridging Body and Soul.......2000-03-21

Paula Reeves' book is a map, a language, and encouragement that trusting body wisdom is a golden prize. I am a recovering daughter of the patriarchy who accepted my body as an inconvenient, fallible vehicle to get me to the library. I assiduously treated the symptoms of tension headaches for 30 years, feeling sabotaged and inept. Now I see that these headaches were like nightmares: wake-up calls to pay attention to my intuition and live congruently.Learning to listen rather than to override my "gut feelings" seems now an act of self-respect, not a cop-out. My own intuitive life force, through my body, wants to express itself to survive, create and connect on an honest level. Paula's lectures, workshops and book have rewarded me by being grounded in scholarship while noting the relationship between personal wisdom and one's body. This book unites what I'd thought paradoxical: body and soul. Reeves weaves "silvery webbed bridges of spiritual steel across the divide between consciousness and instinct..." (p. 110) Her writing is fine and rich with intelligence, practicality and wisdom. So here we are: embodied, ensouled, incarnated, intuitive.Thank you, Paula.

5 out of 5 stars Embodied Exploration.......2000-03-14

I have long been interested in the study of the connections of body, mind, intuition and consciousness and have found most books on the subject to be fairly abstract and intellectual. This book by Paula Reeves gives very practical keys for personal exploration of the inner realms where physicality and consciousness meet and co-create our experience. She gives us many ways to explore "bodymind", not just appreciate the concept.

This guidance is of equal value for men and women.

The book is beautifully and sensitivly written, and was a great pleasure to read.

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing perspective on body wisdom.......1999-11-29

An outstanding combination of the psychological and physiological basis for enhancing the body's natural healing tendencies while learning to appreciate the unique language of movement and symptoms that describe the deeper wisdom of the voice within. An imperative read for those who want to reintroduce or discover their intuition regardless of their gender, previous experiences or ease with the subject of soul.

5 out of 5 stars Groundbreaking body-mind material written for men and women.......1999-11-01

The reader is at once engaged and intrigued by this powefully moving coceptualization of the body-mind in relationship to the feminine. While the personal disclosures are interesting the academic and scientific well underpinnings are well grounded in logic-even when approaching the whispy topic of intuition. Dr. Reeves has found a nerve that needs to be stimulated for both men and women. A good read which could also serve as one's spiritual reading for the day. A book to be relished not hurried and, of course, returned to as needed.

5 out of 5 stars The Best.......2007-09-03

After reading many self help books, this one made a difference in my life. I believe it IS mainstream Christianity, not fundamentalism, however. My God loves homosexuals and everyone else. If you cannot accept differences in others or insist on judging others, this book is not for you. It is all about love, acceptance, and appreciating. This makes a better life for the reader.

5 out of 5 stars My Bible.......2007-08-31

Forget all the current New Agers spirit-speak. Shinn was one of the very first to introduce the Law of Attraction ("the secret") to the masses in the 1920s, and no one gets to the heart of the matter better than her. In fact, I've read many books who almost quote Shinn verbatim, yet never give her credit for the ideas being offered.

What's particularly wonderful about her writing is that she actually teaches you how to put the Law of Attraction into action. She believes that what we all already have is "perfect health, perfect wealth, perfect love and perfect self-expression," and if it's not manifesting in our lives, it's because we're just getting in our own way.

I also love that she focuses on one's divine purpose, meaning that if you need money and affirm that you "give thanks for [your] prosperity," you also add the words "under grace, in divine ways," as a reminder that you want the money as God intends you to have it, not because you got a big insurance settlement from, say, a car accident.

Newer books of this type focus too much on materialism and leave the spirit part out of it.

The book has a decidedly Christian bent, but there are many Eastern philosophies interspersed as well, so even if you aren't a Christian, the book will still speak to you, as well.

I can honestly say that never before has such a book changed my life. Her writing has rocked my life and my world view in general. I've bought countless copies that I've given away to friends and loved ones, so maybe that says it all right there.

5 out of 5 stars First Book to use SHE and HER pronouns!!! Awesome !.......2007-08-25

What a rare treat! Finally - a book that is not only FOR women, but also addresses women directly using feminine personal pronouns like "she" and "her"... I felt like Ms. Shinn was talking directly to me! Not only is it personal to the woman gender - ...the WISDOM is stellar! (I am using a lot of exclamations because this book absolutely deserves it!) This is the finest inspirational philosophy book I have read regarding practical ways of dealing with the world and it's difficulties in a very simple and direct way. Women fron all walks of life can understand and appreciate it as it deals with the struggles of everyday life we face with all its challenges and disappointments. We all know that our THINKING colors our world...if we are happy, the world is a fantastic place...and if we have been hurt or feel we have "failed", the world seems to be a nightmare. Ms. Shinn gives us specific ways of dealing with our mixed up thoughts...secrets that give us the ability to "take back our power" and realize our desires when confronted with adversity. Especially revealing were her real-life examples of her philosophy applied. I bought 5 copies to send to all my best (women) friends for their birthdays because I would have wanted that for myself if I had not already discovered this extraordinary book. Consider giving this version to your men friends as they will experience what women deal with every day reading literature using only MALE pronouns! And it's about time as women world-wide are finally stepping into roles of power!!

5 out of 5 stars A Secret Revealed.......2007-06-30

I read the works of Florence Scovel Shinn a number of years ago and I am delighted to now find that her books have been consolidated into one book. This great lady was born in 1878 and self-published her first book in the 1920's.

Many of the well-known prosperity writers have used her book of affirmations and now anyone who has heard about The Secret, will be very happy with this woman's book of simple and easy-to-use affirmations. They are timeless.

Women will gain much from these affirmative statements. Thinking positive is male oriented because male is considered positive and female is considered negative. Think about it. In coupling a hose, there is the male and the female. To utilize electricity, there is the male plugging into the female socket. Thus, down through the ages, women have had the reputation of being negative and considered 'bad'. It is time for women to throw off that yoke and affirm that they are wonderful and powerful.
Bettye Johnson, author, Secrets of the Magdalene Scrolls.

5 out of 5 stars My New Favorite Book.......2007-04-26

After reading about it in Mama Gena's School of Womanly Arts I was intrigued...I liked The Secret, but I love this book! And ever since I started reading it and playing the game of life properly things have been going really well for me...just like Florence Shinn said they would!

Book Description

Since Phyllis Currot first published Book of Shadows, the story of her spiritual journey and initiation as a High Priestess in the Wiccan community, Witchcraft has captured America's imagination as a theme for fiction, television shows, and films. Now America's highest-profile Witch returns to dispel more myths and misrepresentations of her faith, and to share a practical guide to the beautiful spiritual rituals and philosophies behind Wiccan tradition.

Rich with enchanting stories from Currot's own experiences and detailed advice for creating potions, working with Nature, and finding the Divine within, Witch Crafting is much more than just another superficial recipe book. Curott's unique guidebook integrates the inspiration of religious wisdom with sound, practical information. Witch Crafting reveals how to: incorporate Wiccan practices into your daily life; master the secret arts of effective spell casting; create sacred space and personal rituals; perform divinations for insight and success; and tap the magical power of altered states, such as dreaming meditation, prayer, and trance.

Perfect for beginners or seasoned practitioners, Witch Crafting is the ideal handbook for anyone seeking to unlock the divine power that makes real magic happen, and to experience the power and gifts of the universe more fully.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect book for Newbies and Experienced Craftpeople.......2007-09-01

Although I have been reading and studying the craft for 10 years, I wish I had found this book early on my path. Curott's own feelings as she ventured into Wicca reflected my own and I am sure many others as well. While I experienced the whole guilt factor of leaving Christianity, Curott just seemed to wrestle with the whole "this feels wierd doing ritual factor." What I loved about this book was that it was simply a non-threatening essay style read-like-a-novel book, so if someone just starting out was curious but did not want to committ to learning ritual, correspondence, Sabbats and Esbats, she could read this book and get a true insight while still picking up a few important facts she could recognize later in deeper study. I recommend this book to any newbie especially. Read it and then decide if you are truly ready to convert to Wicca and dedicate your life to the ways of the Wise and the Goddesses. For the experienced Witch or Wiccan, this book will remind you of your own feelings of the awe and wonder you felt when first starting out. Plus it has some good ritual ideas you can pick up, and read about them as they are performed, not just like a recipe.

1 out of 5 stars PORN WARNING .......2006-10-11

I enjoyed the book. I was ready to buy the sequel. The book is excellent and is NOT porn but true stuff I believe. But the web site mentioned at the back of the book (web site is registered to Ms. Curott) is a pornography site. I contacted her publicist 5 months ago who said she would contact the web master. But after 5 months the web site still directs people to a porn site. Not good. And not good for wicca. Do NOT go to this web site mentioned in the book!
And MS CUROTT. - if you are out there - tell us that that website is NOT your will and that you are fighting it in courts or something! It's disgusting!

5 out of 5 stars Breath taking, Spiritual lifting book.......2006-07-15

This was one of the first spiritual books that I read. I fell in love with this book immediately just by looking at the front cover. This book really touched my heart and soul. It helped me find my spiritual path. I recommend this book to everyone. She is a wonderful author and woman.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but I wanted more memoir.......2006-04-25

I really enjoyed this book. I'm a big fan of memoirs by "regular people" who have a strong interest in something unusual, and this definitely fits the bill. My only wish for the book was that the author had stuck to what she does best: describing her personal experiences and emotions in a vivid and lively way. Occassionally she wanders off into a little mini-lecture on Wicca and the "history of witchcraft" (which is of course a subject of some controversy) and when this happens, the book gets rather flat and dry. Better to leave off the educating and stick to the storytelling. Perhaps it is because I am already well-read on elementary Wicca that I found these diversions distracting, but I suspect that even if it was new to me I would have preferred to have Curott "show me" instead of "tell me." Overall a good read, though.

4 out of 5 stars Insightful, poetic, powerful and just a wee bit scattered..........2006-02-02

The first thing to say about this book is that for the first time in a long time I found myself marking passages where Curott's poetic and melodic phrasing called to my heart and beautifully expressed complicated concepts. There is no doubt that Curott has a poet's heart - I certainly wouldn't hesitate to buy a book of poetry written by her.

The second thing to say about this book is that I completely understand the criticisms levelled at Curott from reviewers. The story is self-indulgent and very ego-centric. Obviously as a fictionalised autobiography (and when you think about it aren't most autobiographies at least partly fiction?) the book is designed to be ego-centric, but Curott is just a touch too self obsessed and self congratulatory.

Additionally, I also agree with some of the criticisms levelled at Curott's explanations of her experiences with the coven. Firstly, Curott continually drives in the point that she is "special" and was "chosen" by these women. This isn't how witchcraft and indeed how covens find members - self determination and personal responsibility is at the heart of every witch's life and these are two things that Curott glosses over.

Secondly, the characters in Curott's book are paper thin and basically a hodge podge of sterotypes - the old wise crone who loves Curott more than the other coven members; the lesbian couple who represent each the warrior and the mother; the friend in a bad domestic violence relationship; her lover the enigmatic Jake; the ex-lover and current boss who still wants Curott and won't take no for an answer. These characters are all "cardboard cut outs" and all basically exist to serve Curott.

I wish we could have seen more of her faults and her shadow side and less of the phrases "ivy league lawyer", "he said I was beautiful", "we have been waiting for you", "you're special", "I knew I was intelligent" and "I was working 15 hour days".

Witchcraft and Wicca has changed immensely since the late 70's and early 80's timeline that this book is situated in. Indeed readers might be surprised to know that Curott is in her 50's now.

The whole first person perspective the book is written in is vaguely successful, but it would have worked a lot better if Curott hadn't packed the entire book full of the knowledge and understanding she gained in the 20 years since the events of the book took place. The result is a weird dicotomy between a naive spiritual awakening and the knowledge gained through 20 years of practice. Sometimes the book is so stuffed with information that four or five pages are spent discussing myths and legends which while interesting, does not fit well with the novel like construction of the book.

Despite my criticisms I have given this book 4 stars because as I said - it has been a very long time since a book has moved me enough to record and preserve pearls of wisdom, passion, thought and belief from its pages.

Read this book, and read the workbook "Witchcrafting". You won't be sorry.

1 out of 5 stars The Celts, Wiccafied Again.......2007-07-24

Merely more Wiccafied Llewellyn claptrap. Predominantly Welsh mythology, twisted & forced into un-natural Wiccan shapes. Modern traditional sexism. Authors do not appear to understand the subtleties of ancient Welsh mythology. Avoid if you're looking for Celtic info. A better book that combines Jungian archetypes & Welsh mythology is "A Celtic Quest," by John Layard.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for every woman!!.......2005-06-02

I have read and reread this book so many times. I have given this book to several female friends and think every woman should read it. So much of what society tells woman condrodicts our own deep instincts and beliefs. This book is a great way for women of and faith, race or age to come to know and understand themselves.

5 out of 5 stars The search for the Divine Child...........2002-11-04

Every now and then I read an out-of-print book and wonder why it's out-of-print. The SILVER WHEEL by Marguerite Elsbeth and Kenneth Johnson is just such a book. I can't believe the content of SW is so esoteric most women won't understand it. Maybe it didn't get enough publicity when it was released to keep it in print or maybe those "really important" critics writing for mainstream news organizations ignored it thinking it was some kind of new age arcane book at best or "silly" feminist stuff at worst. If you read Marion Zimmer Bradley's THE MISTS OF AVALON, or if you're fascinated with Joseph Campbell's works, or if you consider yourself a fan of Jung, or if you are working a 12-step program, or all or none of the above, but are fascinated with the relevance of mythology for our "modern" age don't miss this book.

The authors, provide a test in the early pages (similar to the Myers-Briggs personality test) to help a woman determine her location in the process of finding the self (growing self awareness). Unlike the MB, however (which is often misused), this test does not pigeonhole you into a type, but rather helps you get in touch with your current phase of development.

Elsbeth and Johnson present a paradigm consisting of four phases: Queen, Sorceress, Woman Warrior, Lover. During the course of her lifetime, a woman experiences each of these aspects but not all women experience all aspects in the same order, with one exception, the Sorceress is the final phase. Although she experiences the phases of growth at different times in her life, one facet will be more dominant than the others at each point through life. You can probably work out the order of dominance for your own life. Perhaps you became a Queen (mother), divorced and became a Lover, then became single again and a Warrior Woman who earned her daily bread and protected her kids.

The end game of every life is to become the Sorceress (the male equivalent is the Shaman). Sooner or later, you will become a Sorceress because you are going to die. Only the Sorceress, Shamaness, or Saint, is capable of a mystical union with a higher self.

The authors make connections between the Celtic world view and the views of Zen Buddists, American Indians (North and South), the Kabbala, and other Indo-European mystical practices. The metaphors and myths of the Mabinogion presented by Elsbeth and Johnson can work to heal your life. I found many similarities between SW and ANATOMY OF THE SPIRIT by Caroline Myss, and I liked the SW much better. If you are pursuing the path of healing knowledge, this book can provide you with wonderful insights.

5 out of 5 stars Find the missing pieces.......2001-07-12

This is a book for every woman who feels that part of her soul has been lost in the tribulations of life. For every woman who seeks a significant other to "complete" her, for every woman who feels the need to live vicariously through her children, and for every woman who feels like she is "asleep" as she goes about her daily life, PLEASE read this book.

Following the myth of Rhiannon as an outline, Elsbeth and Johnson lead the reader through a story of a woman coming into her power. Every woman has felt that she was forced to give up some precious part of herself at some point; that feeling of incompleteness can simmer and seethe, leading to depression, neurosis, or violence when she finally "snaps". Or, the woman can look deep within herself, face some tough questions, and come to realize that her "self" was never lost at all, and can be awakened through meditation and dreams. The meditations presented here are useful, but simply reading the text _without_ doing any of the meditations can be invaluable. This is a book of empowerment. Read it, and realize that you are complete in yourself--and in your new-found self-esteem, you won't need anyone else to complete you. And when you don't _need_ others, then you are truly free to _love_ them as people.

The use of the Celtic myths as a metaphor for the journey will draw in a crowd of mainly Pagan women, but any woman can benefit from this book. Read it, and find your power.

Got this for Christmas and I can't believe how good it is. I've been studying these Welsh myths for awhile (they are from the medieval collection of myths called The Mabinogion) and I must confess I've always been confused by them. But Arianrhod (SilverWheel) is my Lady so I've read and re-read the Mabinogian and scoured the bookstores trying to find out more about her and the other goddesses I love: Blodeuwedd, Cerridwen, Rhiannon, and Branwen. And then I get this book! I'm still gasping at how great it is. (BTW, though the emphasis is on the Welsh myths, Irish goddesses are included, too.)

The authors carefully take each myth about these goddesses (and several others) and explore the psychology behind them, helping you to understand each myth as a primal archetype within yourself. NOTE: It's not a history book that digs up more information about these confusing myths -- in other words, it doesn't say, "Arianrhod's myth as written in the Mabinogian is corrupt; here is the real myth from earlier sources." It deals with the Mabinogion straight on, with all its' twists and turns. But by sticking with the story as we have it and delving deeply into those archetypes, the authors give us amazing insights into the myths. This book allows us to experience the myths in a new way, not only by studying each myth indepth and applying it to our life-patterns, but by giving excellent meditations and exercises that take us on an actual journey. You discover things about yourself, and the myths become a part of you. I'm probably going to be working with this book for several years. Get this book if you want to learn more about Welsh myth, or if you want to do some very intense soul-work. You'll be a changed person!

    Book Description

The rebirth of the feminine surrounds us in many forms—from the worldwide movement for women's rights to the resurgence of interest in the feminine spirituality of the Goddess and the Divine Mother. What is the spiritual meaning behind this rebirth? What is the feminine divine? Who is she?

She has had many names in many cultures: Ishtar in Babylon, Inanna in Sumeria, Athena, Hera, Demeter, and Persephone in Greece, Isis in Egypt, Durga, Kali, and Lakshmi in India. She is the Shekinah of the Kabbalists and the Sophia, or Divine Wisdom of the gnostics.

Rudolf Steiner called her Anthroposophia—Divine Wisdom who descended from the spiritual world and passed through humanity to become the present goal and archetype of human wisdom in the cosmos.

This book contains most of what Steiner had to say about Sophia. We see him "midwifing" the birth of the Sophia, the new Isis, divine feminine wisdom, in human hearts on Earth.

Each chapter explores the mystery of the various relationships of Sophia: Sophia and Isis, Sophia and the Holy Spirit, Sophia and Mary, the mother of Jesus (and Mary Magdalene), Sophia and the Gnostic Achamod, and Sophia and the New Isis.

Above all, in a remarkable way, Steiner makes clear the relationship of Christ and Sophia:

Isis-Sophia, Divine Wisdom, slain by Lucifer,

Carried off on wings of world-wide forces into cosmic space,

    The Christ-Will working in us

    Will wrest Her from Lucifer,

And on vessels of spiritual knowledge,

Call Isis-Sophia, Divine wisdom, to new life in human souls.
