Yoga for Dummies proves that this 5,000-year-old Indian discipline can be all things to all people--the athlete striving for more-limber limbs, the stressed-out professional needing mental calm, peace, and clarity; the pregnant mom-to-be looking to keep herself toned and her emotions balanced, the spiritual seeker wanting to access the higher planes of consciousness.

Georg Feuerstein, Ph.D., and Larry Payne, Ph.D., are internationally recognized yoga experts. After explaining how to prepare your body and mind for yoga--including warnings about how to practice safely--they jump straight into the postures (asanas), instructions for which make up the meat of book (relaxation, breathing, movement, sequencing, compensation, sitting). Feuerstein and Payne carefully and in great detail lead the reader through every step, although they do advise first-timers to supplement the book with actual classes until they have the basics down. Throughout the book, clear explanations accompany black-and-white photos and drawings. (Unfortunately, following the written instructions is hard enough when your feet are in the air or your head's down by your ankles, and the book would have been improved if the pictures always appeared on the same page as their instructions.)

Readers then learn about tailoring a yoga program to their needs; using props; practicing "Yoga Throughout the Day"; incorporating yoga into sex, meditation, menopause, and pregnancy; using yoga to treat back problems and PMS; and practicing yoga with kids. The book also covers yogic ethics, philosophy, and resources. It's not all asanas and pranas, though--Yoga for Dummies is sprinkled with the humor characteristic of the For Dummies series (a section explaining that the ego is the ultimate source of stress is titled "Wherever ego, I go") and practical advice (the Forgiving Limbs maneuver allows you to bend your legs and arms a bit rather than try to fully extend them, so that you can perform postures you're not yet quite limber enough for). This is both an excellent beginner's guide and a good reference for more advanced yoginis who want a brush-up course. --Stefanie Durbin

5 out of 5 stars Another great book.......2007-10-04

I totally get the concept thanks to this kind of book. There are plenty of books out there that help you get started. This is one of the best. I need/want books that open my mind to a new kind of experience---It met my expectations

2 out of 5 stars Too much New age, not enough stretching........2007-05-25

A few years ago, I was in a Yoga class, but after moving to a new state, I lost the thread of regular exercise. I picked this book because I like Yoga, but I don't remember the proper stances and wanted a basic book for getting started.

What I didn't want was a dissertation on breathing, and why I have to eliminate stress from my life, and how many different forms of Yoga there are (you're only going to be teaching stances for one type of Yoga, so how about we dispense with the history and get on to the exercise?)

This book was choked with new-age mysticism and positive thinking pap. As I read it, I could feel the author trying to rein in his "crystals and incense" rhetoric so that he didn't lose people like me. At one point, I just started flipping through the pages, hoping to find a picture of a person that might mark the beginning of actual information. You know what I found? A picture of a person lying down, and a description of how to rest properly.

I don't mean to sound unkind, but I know how to lie down. I've been doing it for most of my life. I'm well practiced in that. I follow a religious regimen of lying down at least once every night, and I don't remember ever getting it wrong. Can we get to the freaking exercise!

1 out of 5 stars underwhelmed.......2006-05-20

I ordered what I thought was a full size intro to yoga book and got the pee wee version for elves. I had been breathlessly waiting for my full size edition to arrive in the mail because I was so excited to be starting yoga. As I held the pitifully small thing in my hand I got so depressed because it reminded me of some bad relationships i've had in the past--big promises and nothing to back it up with. I binged on a quart of dulce de leche ice cream and a dozen black bottom cupcakes to try to numb my pain. These evil satanic deceivers must be stopped.

5 out of 5 stars Yoga for Dummies.......2006-01-15

Very good and informative. Written in plain direct instructions.

5 out of 5 stars great little book.......2005-11-30

This book is enormously helpful to asana students AND it does justice to Yoga's spiritual background as well.

this looks like a great book, one thing brings it down, though. i hate to sound lookist but the photographs of the people who are doing the exercises are truly bad--i would rather not look at balding long haired 49 year old hippies and 200 pound women getting into these poses. Check out the plus size woman on pg 113 doing the alley cat--and the old lady with the huge behind and jowls. i suppose it's not very pc but this motley collection of flabby people encased in spandex does not project an image of health and vitality. not very inspiring.

"To tell you the truth, you can learn the basics of meditation in five minutes," asserts Stephan Bodian, meditation instructor, psychotherapist, and former editor-in-chief of Yoga Journal. You can also study meditation for years, exploring its subtleties. Meditation for Dummies is a simple, clear introduction to the basics of meditation, including an overview of dozens of techniques, practices, and specific meditations, plus direction for going deeper. You get step-by-step instructions for a variety of meditations, including body position, mental concentration, where to put your attention, what to contemplate or notice, physical movements, and breathing. A nice touch is the recurring "traditional wisdom": ancient stories or anecdotes that make a point. This book is useful whether you want the nuts and bolts for getting started in the next minute or you want to dip your mind into different practices and philosophies. Nothing is too elementary to explain: "how to sit up straight--and live to tell about it," what to wear, dealing with fear and self-judgment, and what to do when you get "stuck." You also get plenty of information about the benefits and varieties of meditation. You're bound find and develop a practice that feels right for you. --Joan Price

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Reference Guide for Medititation.......2007-07-10

I purchased "Meditation for Dummies" several years ago, when I wasn't really sure just what meditation was or what type of meditation might be best for me - and even now, all these years later, I consider it the best meditation book I've purchased to date!

Unlike most of the books on meditation out there today - which tend to focus solely on one type - this one covers a wide range of different ways to meditate, including information concerning how that form of meditation came to be & easy step-by-step instructions on how to do it.

Through the use of icons, this book is structured in such a way that you can easily find information concerning:

1. Brief refreshing meditation exercises
2. Things to remember
3. Philosophical "musings"
4. Tips on how to make your meditations easier & more effective
5. Traditional wisdom - wisdom from groups who've been meditating for
thousands of years

Also, depending on where you are in your meditation practice, you can easily find the chapters that deal with:

1. What meditation is & other general info.
2. How to get started
3. Troubleshooting & fine-tuning your meditation practice
4. How to use meditation throughout the day
5. Answers to the most frequently asked questions

Overall, this book provides you with everything you need to begin &/or expand your meditation practice - and it does so in an easy-to-understand, fun way! I can't recommend it highly enough!

I read a number of other meditation books & listened to tapes before checking this book out of the library. I immediately knew I needed to own this resource. The title belies the insight and value of the content. It is easy to use & is a ready reference book. The author did a marvelous job!

5 out of 5 stars Yoga with Weights For Dummies.......2007-07-18

The hardest part of any exercise program is getting started. Often the programs are too complex and expect the participant to be "in shape". Then there is the cost of expensive equipment and the time commitment. Finding the right exercise program that suits your lifestyle, your needs, and your schedule seems like a recipe for disaster.

Yoga with Weights For Dummies to the rescue. Yoga with Weights is a unique program that combines the stretching and flexibility aspects of yoga with the strength training benefits of weights. The end result is long lean muscles that are strong, without the expensive equipment or inflexible exercise regime.

Yoga with Weights For Dummies actually outlines a number of different programs to gently fit different needs for energy, balance, restoration, strengthening, endurance, and abs workouts. Special adaptations and workouts are also giving for seniors and pregnant women. In all cases, the amount of weight (from no weight at all to 5 pounds) is left up to the participant based upon his or her needs, fitness levels, and goals. Moreover, unlike other fitness regimes, yoga with weights can be done in a twenty minute block of time or broken up throughout your day.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I learned Pilates using this book.......2007-06-02

I started using this book 2 years ago to learn the basics of Pilates. I have tried other Pilates books/DVDs since, but I keep going back to this book. The first part of the book explains what Pilates is, such as controlling movement, maintaining stability, and why breathing at particular times in the exercises is important, and it gives examples of these that are easy to understand. Then it goes into what the words neutral spine, abdominal scoop, pilates first position, etc., actually mean, and how to do them.

The mat exercises contain 4 levels: Pre-Pilates, Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced. Not knowing anything about Pilates when I started, I began with the Pre-Pilates workout. Because there are multiple steps to most exercises, it did take some time to remember when to breathe, when to roll up or down, but once I got that down, it made the subsequent levels of exercises easier to learn. Also, a few of the exercises were impossible for me because I didn't have the strength to do them, but I just did what I could, for example the hip-up, I would lie on the mat with my feet in the air and worked those abdominal muscles although my feet were going nowhere, and within 2 weeks I was doing all 9 hip-ups. You just have to do a little more each time. The beginning mat series contains some exercises from Pre-Pilates and it's not very long, so it wasn't too difficult to learn.

The intermediate mat series is where I really felt I was getting a workout, and I still use this one, although I have added some to it since. It really felt as if I was getting an intense abdominal workout and after adding the variations for the side kicks, my legs definitely got stronger. The advanced series I have done a few times, but it is rather long, about an hour compared with 20 minutes of the intermediate, and I have trouble finding time for it.

The next section deals with Pilates accessories such as foam roller, magic circle, and big ball, and give some exercises to do using those. Overview of Pilates equipment just tells what some of the things are you might find in a Pilates studio and shows pictures of people using them, but gives no exercises.

Overall this is a great book that I would recommend to anybody interested in learning Pilates. Thanks to the wonderfully detailed instructions, I believe I am getting a safe, effective Pilates workout.

5 out of 5 stars Pilates - a superb reference.......2006-07-29

I borrowed a copy of the book from my local library and liked it so much I bought it for myself and for my daughter-in-law.
I attended a Pilates class and told my instructor that I had the book - she remarked that it is one of the best and recommended it to the whole class here at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

The book gives excellent explanations. While the class gave me a sense of how a flowing routine will work, I can do it at home with the aid of the book.

I recommend it highly. Thanks, A Pilates Dummy Fan

3 out of 5 stars Great if you already have some body knowledge.......2005-10-17

This book was one of my mom's rejects for the reason that she couldn't make head nor tail of the instructions. I like it quite a bit, but I have a background in modern dance and was already familiar with isolating different muscle groups. I think if you don't have a good sense of your body already, this book might be too confusing to start with.

So far there's a lot of good material for me to work with, although much of the book is dedicated to repetitive touting of the benefits of pilates (yes, we already know it tones) as well as super-advanced exercises using complicated equipment, which aren't really "for dummies." Still, the workouts are fun, challenging, and feel good on my body. I would recommend glancing at the instructions before buying and seeing if they make sense to you. If they do, you'll probably like this book -- otherwise, maybe try a video or simpler book.

4 out of 5 stars A good guide if you buy the Pilates hype.......2003-08-23

This is probably the best guide you can buy for Pilates. It is easy to understand and does not try to mystify or complicate the subject. It has good pictures and descriptions of exercises, most of which are good, but more than a few I think are really a strain on the back. I am not really enthusiastic about Pilates. I think basic callestenic exercises are just as effective if done mindfully and correctly. Nevertheless, if you are convinced that Pilates is magic and you want to purchase a guide this would be your best bet.

2 out of 5 stars I agree completely with the review "Not really for Dummies".......2002-10-02

I couldn't understand the instructions either, for the same
reason: You have to read the book while you're trying to
do the exercise. However, this ended up giving me a great workout: I was lying on my back for many minutes holding a "crunch", since I had to keep my neck raised up trying to read the book while I was supine on the mat. This may be a new Pilates exercise.

To reap the holistic benefits of any mind-body exercise, students must relax and stay focused throughout their class. That's tough to do when the instructor seems to be--or actually is--speaking a foreign language, or when the physical movements seem equally foreign to the body. In Mind-Body Fitness for Dummies, Therese Iknoian, president of the Total Fitness Network, successfully breaks through such "language barriers," providing beginners with the confidence to explore new classes. Iknoian draws from her impressive health, fitness, and journalistic background to offer the insider's skinny on 11 holistic exercise methods. She divides these into three basic groups: the centuries-old (yoga, tai chi chuan, and qigong), the "modern classics" (Pilates, Feldenkrais, Alexander Technique, inversion therapy, and Laban), and the "new kids" (NIA [neuromuscular integrative action], body rolling, chi ball). Then, with plenty of humor and empathy for her reader, she quite ably dissects each. Complete how-to information about each fitness method reads easily and leaves little mystery. The history, philosophy, principles, and postures of each style simply flow across the book's 300-plus pages; clearly, this project was no chore for its world record-breaking author (race walking, 1994 Indoor 3K) who also holds a master's degree in exercise physiology. Understandable illustrations, accompanied by Iknoian's lucid instructions, will help readers practice specific moves and stances before going public. Anyone who has heard about improved physical and mental health as a result of a mind-body exercise regime--but has hesitated to dabble--will be encouraged by this thoroughly enjoyable and educational primer. --Liane Thomas

5 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of mind-body exercises.......2007-03-02

I borrowed this book to read. I am so pleased with it that I am ordering it. Therese Ikonian is a superior writer. She writes clearly and logically.

This book summarises a great number of different exercise/fitness methods in a clear coherent manner. It gives enough examples of the exercises so that the reader can select what he/she needs. For example her discussions of the Feldenkrais and Alexander methods are the best I have seen.

There are a slew of web sites listed so that it is easy to get more information on any and all of the desciplines discussed. (Of course you can first take a look in the public library or a warehouse bookstore.)

5 out of 5 stars MindBody Fitness for Dummies.......2001-05-10

This book wins the "fitness relevance" award for being virtually the first to apolitically and respectfully describe the major mindful exercise modalities that exist in the West today - in one concise volume. There are hundreds of yoga, tai chi, Pilates, martial arts and derivative publications today each extolling the papal and fitness-related virtues of their own species of mind-body exercise. Therese has put together a utilitarian compendium of the classical and contemporary forms, yes in somewhat abstract form, but always with skillful instruction and quite meaningful resources. This is a wonderfully organized reference for those desiring a wide-angle and descriptive view of the major players in mind-body exercise modalities.

Spirituality for Dummies is for smart souls who know that we are all really beginners when it comes to understanding spirituality. Like all books for dummies, the layout is filled with lots of information boxes, bulleted lists, humorous cartoons, quick tips, and pithy quotes (from Marcus Aurelius to George Carlin).

Fortunately, author Sharon Janis put a lot of research into this informative discussion on spiritual growth. As a result, she maintains a solid voice that transcends the cluttered and sometimes superficial format. Spiritual practices, such as yoga and mediation, are briefly explained along with how to cultivate spiritual values and rise above suffering. At times she offers the kindly voice of experience: "When I'm able to give something to another person, I know it is God giving through me. Then, rather than expecting anything in return I am grateful for having been of service." At other times she is the voice of a well-educated teacher: "Ex means 'out of,' while status is a 'fixed condition.' This means that, in a way, the more fixed conditions you have to move out of, the more ecstatic you can become. Therefore every trouble in your life is really a beautiful gift to be unwrapped." --Gail Hudson

Sharon is humorous as well as informative and wise...definitely this book is a keeper. That's all I have to say for the spitiual seekers out there.

5 out of 5 stars Great introduction to spirituality!.......2007-06-08

This book is a great introduction to spiritual concepts which has helped me begin a spiritual journey. The book presents a different way of looking at the world, which is helpful to me since I was raised in a traditional Christian environment.

This book has given me enough background information to understand more complicated texts, which is exactly why I bought it.

The author does a great job of incorporating traditions and sayings from many different religions. It is well written and easy to understand - even humorous!

5 out of 5 stars This book was EXACTLY what I was looking for!!.......2007-02-07

After years of wondering what the meaning of life was, and what my purpose here on earth is, I found this book! It helped me uncover the world of spirituality, which in turn helped me answer some of these most fundamental questions!

The book is such an easy read, and the author has a brilliant sense of humor. I often reference the book over and over, for information on certain specific subjects, which is very easy to do in the "Dummies" format. It is also written to embrace all religions, non-religions, races, genders, etc. It truly is a book for everyone!

I recommend this book to anyone seeking to grow spiritually, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did (and still do)!

3 out of 5 stars Good Book - Bad Music.......2006-11-04

I found this a good read in better understanding of the subject. It is a good beginning.

BUT the CD is worthless. The music is an insult to all the wonderful types of music that could have been included to support the search for a more spiritual life. Where is Mozart, Japanese flute, or Tibetan, etc.?

4 out of 5 stars Gets a point across.......2006-09-13

While I was hoping for a more traditional, religious description of spirituality in Spirituality for Dummies, the end result that I found was also fairly illuminating. One of the common themes in many religions is a quest for what we call spirituality, roughly meaning a sense of universal connection and enlightenment. Author Sharon Janis has described this phenomenon focusing on spirituality directly rather than as an aspect of some particular religion or by comparison to any theology, though she does relate it somewhat more to Eastern traditions than to Western ones.

From the start her focus is on the ordinary, individual practitioner. In the context here, spirituality is a somewhat new-age experience (however old the traditions are elsewhere in the world). It relates to a notion of letting go of physical and material attachments. The word `attachment' is key, and Janis reiterates the common notion that anything in moderation is probably unproblematic. It boils down to the notion that if one never expects anything, one is never disappointed. Put another way, you can't take it with you. Put another way, ... the list of well-known sayings is quite long and familiar. Janis organizes her words well, and tries to relate an abundance of suggestions and ideas to a wide variety of issues in life. She does fall into the common-enough habit of `reminding' the reader of how unhappy he is with a `materialistic' or `consumer' culture. We can infer then that the target audience is one that has already accepted, implicitly or otherwise, that several aspects of Western Civilization are known to be flawed, harmful, or unproductive of overall happiness. Anyone satisfied with his or her own life is unlikely to be swayed by the book. On the other hand, many of these sayings, expanded and commented upon here, can provide some concise reminders that we should occasionally step back and examine our priorities. Sometimes thinking about our position in the universe and our relation to other people can serve as a reality-check. That much I think is accessible to any reader. For the rest, I'd venture to say that the reader will get out of Spirituality for Dummies as much as he is already ready to take in.
