You don't win three Super Bowls with luck. Bill Walsh, head coach of the San Francisco 49ers during the great Montana years, provides an inside look at his tenure with a team that will be remembered as one of the era's most dominating professional sports organizations. It's all here: the West Coast Offense made famous by the 'Niners; the incredible attention to detail in the locker room and on the field; the clutch play-calling that resulted in timeless sporting moments such as "The Drive" that defeated Cincinnati in the final seconds of Super Bowl XXIII. Walsh took over a team in trouble and transformed it into a force to be reckoned with. In Finding the Winning Edge he reveals the methods behind this transformation, including his program for hiring and developing a staff; evaluating and acquiring key players; building a game plan; and overcoming the mental barriers that frequently plague talented teams; Walsh spares no details. Serious football fans and coaches will find this to be an invaluable resource for understanding the highest levels of the game.
Book Description
When those who chronicle the history of the game list the individuals who had the greatest impact on the National Football League, Bill Walsh will clearly be among the names of Halas, Lombardi, Brown, Landry, Noll and Shula. In Finding the Winning Edge, the coach of three Super Bowl Championships illustrates and outlines the basic organizational, coaching and system philosophies that he used throughout his career.

Non Fiction.......2007-09-03
The famous NFL coach explains how to go about recruiting, building and administering a winning team. It took me a while to be able to get a copy of this from Melbourne Sports Books, as the AFL coaches kept buying them.
A master who has built more than one team, and come up with new systems and adaptations of playing styles to suit changing conditions, or to give him, as he says, the Winning Edge.
This is a must read!.......2002-02-21
Simply put, everyone should own this book. Bill Walsh's book is insightful, inspiring, comprehensive, and can easily be applied to any business or sport.
A bible for football coaches everywhere!.......2000-09-06
In his book, Bill Walsh goes through football from A to Z. Everything, and I mean everything that you would ever want to know about football, from offensive and defensive philosophy to the role of the "head of football relations" to what to tell a team after a disappointing season is covered. Every serious coach has heard of Bill Walsh and understands the role his innovative offensive philosophy plays in modern football. Now read his exact ideas for yourself.
Great for NFL people, good for everyone else.......2000-05-29
Coach Walsh gives great details on every aspect it takes to run an NFL team, from ownership to the coaches secretary. Most of the football details (90%) focus on offense, with very little left over for defense. Some of the details of executive positions for NFL teams do not apply to anything but the NFL (dealing with the salary cap etc.) but are very wordy.
The bible of football is available for a low price.......1999-12-28
When football is thought of, no doubt Bill Walsh is among the first to come to mind just as Jesus is to the Holy Bible. If you want to know how the mastermind himself engineered all of those big wins and the plays that helped him execute the west coast offense to perfection, then no doubt you have found the holy grail in books.

Essential For Any Football Coach.......2007-09-25
"Winning Single Wing Football" is a complete revision of the late Dr. Kenneth Keuffel's classic 1964 "Simplified Single Wing Football" (or SSWF, which I will contrast with the newer WSWF). Written an astonishing FORTY YEARS later, WSWF starts with the core of the unbalanced-line single wing offense that SSWF first presented, then adds much more. The irony to me is that WSWF is actually far more "simplified" than SSWF. It is as though with 40 additional years of experience to draw on, Dr. Keuffel pared away all but the absolutely essential information.
After a brief introductory chapter that outlines his playing, coaching and teaching careers, Dr. K walks the prospective single wing coach through all the steps he must take to get an offense up and running. He does so in a way that reflects credit on his Ph.D. in English from Penn -- simply and logically.
I know of no other coach able to impart the basics of setting up a single wing attack in only 10 pages, but Dr. Keuffel manages this in the second chapter of WSWF. He follows with an elegantly simple description of how to teach linemen to be single wing centers.
(In the process, Dr. K highlights the necessity for training several centers, but without scaring coaches away. This is a skill that can be taught with sufficient application and attention to detail -- it isn't rocket science.) All other positions receive the same treatment in chapter three.
Next Dr. Keuffel gets to the heart of the single wing offense, the straight series running plays. Coaches who have seen SSWF will notice the first of Dr. K's major simplifications here with the very first play -- Play 48, the straight-series off-tackle play. Where before Dr. Keuffel ran two different variations of this play, one with linemen pulling and leading, and a separate goal-line variation with solid blocking and the blocking back kicking out the EMLOS defender, he now only uses the goal-line version.
Time after time in WSWF, Dr. Keuffel extols the benefits of "getting two for one" -- i.e., teaching one thing that you can use in two or more situations. He leaves the door open, however, for others to do things differently. Readers are free to go back to the original pulling scheme for Play 48, or even to adapt the popular modern method of pulling the backside guard and tight end, the water boy, and the larger members of the cheer squad through the off-tackle hole.
Chapter 5 lays out the fun stuff, the indirect attack. Dr. Keuffel details the methods behind the FB full and half spin sequences, as well as a complementary TB half-spin cycle. He also strongly urges selectivity in choosing cycles -- more is most definitely not better when choosing which indirect cycles to run, especially given limited practice time. Again, the astonishing thing to me is that Dr. Keuffel is able to impart an entire lecture on indirect-series single wing football in only ten pages.
Next, the section dearest to my wild-eyed heart -- the passing game. Chapter 6 covers the basics of passer development, setting up dropback protection, variations on dropback route packages, teaching the running pass, and then explores the arcana of reverse passes, special passes (a jump pass, a shovel pass, etc.), and fake passes, including the legendary Statue of Liberty play.
Again, Dr. Keuffel's interest in simplification leaps off the page with his new versions of the optional running pass (Plays 79 and 99). Where before he released three receivers strongside (WB, TE, and BB), he now adds a strongside blocker and releases either the wing and blocking back (Play 79) or the wing and TE (Play 99). He makes explicit mention of his decision to do so and the reasons which drove his decision, which leaves the way open for coaches to do it the old way -- or even adopt a more modern method.
The Andrew Coverdale/Dan Robinson book The Bunch Attack: Using Compressed Formations in the Passing Game (Art & Science of Coaching), for example, features a Flood route package which is perfect for adaptation to Dr. Keuffel's Play 79/99. Using such modular methods (including 30-degree, "severe-angle" blocking) allows coaches to continue to modernize and personalize their single wing attack. (Note: The thoughts on Bunch passing and SAB are mine, but I believe they fit perfectly with the methods Dr. Keuffel used to teach his offense.)
Chapter 7 presents the quick-kicking game, which can be a tactical weapon of great value whether your opponent expects it or not, and which can allow a team to out-think a more talented opponent by forcing him to drive the length of the field if he wants to score. There is a wide array of fake quick-kick plays -- runs, passes, even a screen and a Statue -- and something of even greater potential value, a way to further simplify your entire kicking game.
Dr. Keuffel advocates using quick kick protection for punts, field goals and extra points, unbalanced line and all. This could be a real time-saver during pre-season installation, and as with all unusual variations, might cause your opponents to waste valuable practice time preparing for them.
To me, the most important section of the book starts with Chapter 8 and runs through Chapter 10. Here is where Dr. Keuffel's decades of experience truly shine through -- he discusses the smallest details of pre-game strategy and mid-game tactical adjustments. He tells coaches exactly how to use the spotter in the booth, how to break down film, and how to create and use a game plan. It is among the finest discussions of coaching strategy and tactical application during the game that I have ever seen.
I would advocate purchasing this book to offensive coaches of all stripes for these three chapters alone. The effective use of variations -- in formation, cadence, alignment, personnel; pre-season preparations; and focusing on and exploiting defensive weaknesses, are all addressed with Dr. Keuffel's typical economy of expression. This book is pure gold, whether you run single wing, Power-I or five-wide shotgun spread, because he teaches coaches how to THINK.
Buy this book -- you'll thank me later.
THE book on the single wing.......2005-02-06
DR. K has done it again with his second book on the single wing. All I can say is that this book is all you need to run a complete offense at any level.

Better than Average.......2003-03-06
Strengths: The book broadly covers most of the elements of defensive football strategy. Most defensive approaches that have been attempted successfully in the last 40 years are reviewed and explained. Football coaches, especially at the HS level where the athletes' practice time is limited, will appreciate the book's simplicity and its ability to convey the essence of a particular defensive approach. Do these philosophies work? They have, in various forms, for decades.
Weaknesses: The strength of the book is also its primary weakness. It covers so much material that nothing is covered in detail, and coaches seeking the finer points of a particular defensive scheme may have to look elsewhere for assistance. Some of the newer defensive philosophies, especially the incredibly specialized schemes used in the pro ranks (defensive ends dropping off into coverage in short zones, linebackers who only play in running situations, or cornerbacks involved in intricate blitz schemes) are not covered. HS coaches will probably not have the time or athletic talent to indulge in that level of detail anyway.
As for the critique that defensive schemes designed to stop offenses from the 1960s don't belong in the book, I would beg to differ. In many areas of the country, especially the deep south, HS football coaches still employ the offensive systems in which they themselves played in decades before. Perhaps the most prominent example is the use of the triple-option out of a wishbone formation, once a staple of college football (Oklahoma and Alabama in the 1970s), never used in the pro ranks and abandoned by almost all college teams except the Air Force Academy and the Naval Academy. It was not unusual to find Tennessee HS football teams still running this offense through the 1990s. In this regard, the book's coverage of defenses designed to stop antiquated offensive game plans is a strength at the HS level.
Defenses of the 60s in a book that comes out in 2000??.......2000-10-21
Aww come on! This is the best the AFCA could do? Lets call it what it really is THE BEST OF THE AFCA MANUALS (DEFENSE). Now granted some techniques and fundamentals are ageless, but the AFCA has members at every major college and most professional teams. This is not the best it could do.

Solid info for all coaching levels.......2005-10-18
The book is geared for high school and college, but as a pre high school coach, I found alot of information to help at the youth level. There is alot of detail and drills that I have already used this year. If you are looking for information on various basic offensive formations and plays, you will find it here. Also, they cover basics on QB footwork and RB training. Lots of good stuff.
Tap Into the Great Minds of Football.......2003-01-13
I coach football at the high school level and got a lot out of this book. Most of the articles are pulled from AFCA Summer Manuals and Convention notes through the years. I read an article or two a day last spring and it really got me in a creative football mode. Some of the articles are dated but football is so cyclical that it's a big benefit to be contrary. Some of the old articles by Paterno, Devaney, and Fry are the msot helpful. The articles are brief so look at this as a huge tray of appetizers to get you thinking about what you really want to study in depth. Highly recommended.
Outstanding Aid For Intermediate Coaches.......2002-12-01
AFCA and Human Kinetics have produced a gem of a book which will be of most help to intermediate coaches -- that is, those who have a few years' experience under their belts, and are looking for new ideas in offensive systems, or for new plays to run from within their favorite offensive system.
While the age of some of the articles may seem troubling, it can in fact be a real advantage. Football offenses are so subject to trends and cycles that anything which is not current can be successful because it comes as a surprise. A defensive analogy would be the 5-2 defense -- "America's defense" throughout the 70's and much of the 80's, but almost unknown in some regions today, and thus a valuable surprise weapon.
The same holds true on offense, and the riches this book displays are a real treasure trove -- the triple option (from the wishbone, I formation and split-back veer); the Wing-T; and various pass-oriented spread and one-back systems are all covered by some of the most prominent names in coaching from the last three decades.
This isn't the best place to start for beginning coaches, nor the modern state of the art for cutting-edge types, but for the rest of us it is an excellent place to begin the next stage of our never-ending quest for football knowledge.
Strategic is right.......2001-06-02
I've read quite a few books on the game of football. Not being a coach, I don't think most people would want to pick this up, but for those who love the game itself will find this an indispensible reference. The book is composed of short articles by college coaches which deal with one small apspect of offence or a certain type of attack at a time. Although the college game is much simpler than the NFL, the insights I've picked up by reading this book have completely changed the way I watch football, be it college, CFL, or NFL. When I move to a different location where I can join a high school coaching team, this book will be soon find the pages being worn out. Absolutely excellent!
One of the Most Comprehensive Guides to Offensive Football.......2000-04-07
This book is one of the most comprehensive guides to offense that I have ever encountered. It includes almost 750 diagrammed plays from some of the top names in football including Bob Devaney and Tom Osborne, as well as many other college and high school football coaches. This text would be a valuable addition to any coaches library. It will definitely add variety to any offense and add many new twists and schemes to any offense whether you have an option team or a passing based offense. I think it would be a very wise investment.

Beyond the X's and O's.......2001-10-26
Of the numerous football guides I've read, this is the first book that actually went beyond the X's and O's of football. As the title says, it not only discusses the on-field game, but also preparation, team building, and the mental side of the game.
This book touches interesting topics and is probably intended for giving some more food for thought and different angles on coaching issues. It is not exactly a DIY-manual or a literal step-by-step gude for all football coaches on how to build a successful team.
While some of the chapters are a bit academic and subject to cross your personal views, this book is a recommended especially for those who are just starting their coaching career or coach youth and junior football.
A Great Coaching Reference.......2001-10-03
A book that any coach should have. It gets the wheels going in your mind allowing you to develop new schemes. Its interesting to read other famous coach's ideas on topics like the Double Wing, Passing from your own endzone, and using the 50 front.
WOW, THIS IS AWESOME.......2000-05-19
I just got a job coaching and thought that I would pick up a book to help me in learning the ins and outs of the game. I have found it here. Thi is one excelent book. I played some college ball and now am going to coach, but I have learned a ton of things that o would not know until you start researching the game. EXCELENT..
Middle School Coach.......1999-12-01
This book is an excellent source for all age levels. It gives various offenses and defenses to run and use with your team. I love it! It has really come in handy at my school.
A great book on theories for any coach at any level........1999-10-23
This book was excellent. It covers offensive and defensive theories for any type of team. It was required reading for my Coaching class at WVU.

Excellent Resource for ANY Soccer Coach.......2007-08-11
This book includes excellent drills for skills ranging from fundamental to experienced. It also gets into a lot of game strategy, and it addresses the special situations such as throw-ins and corner kicks from offense and defense. I really like how he pulls in excellent advice and his philophy for coaching. If I had to select just one book for my coaching library, it would be this one!
Great Intermediate Book.......2007-04-10
First, I have to define intermediate. I have coached U6 and U8 for 5 seasons, and have just moved up to coach U11. I bought this book and Progressive Soccer, and this book was MUCH better. It's pretty beat up now because I refer to it constantly. It has drills and games for all the skills, and most of them start out at a low level (U8 or so) and get more advanced. Almost all of them have worked out well for our team.
I would say this is not a beginner's book, too much info and probably too in depth for a brand-new coach. Not a lot of "kiddie games" like you would use for U6 or U8. I would say U10 and up can get a lot out of this book.
My only complaint is I would like a little more in the team strategy parts and "system of play" parts, the book is a little weak on those areas, other than going through some different formations (which won't apply if you don't play 11 on 11).
Again, highly recommended for the coach moving up for the first time into the U10 age group for the first time.
Coach.......2007-01-16
This book is very good for an experienced coach or a coach of older (14+) players. It is well written, encourages coaches to have a positive attitude towards their players & the game, & includes a wealth of material. For the younger team, it doesn't encourage the "have fun & think for yourself" attitude that is enouraged in current coaching classes or by the American Youth Soccer Association.
OUTSTANDING for the intermediate coach.......2000-05-30
Absolutely terrific book -- spanning all aspects of team and individual play. I own a number of books -- usually too basic or far too advanced. Hargreaves' book is exceptional in that it takes soccer coaching to a high quality level in terms of both theory and tactics. Probably not the best "first" book for a beginning coach, but great for Under-10 and over (and perhaps U8 advanced play). I'm back to buy additional copies for my assistant coaches. My highest, 5-star recommendation.
A must have for a beginning coach.......2000-05-17
Excellent book that covers all the bases (technique, tactics, philosphy etc). If your ready for more detailed information on the same topics then Coaching Soccer the Progressive Way and Coaching Soccer Sucessfully should be right for you.
Book Description
Match coaching is often overlooked in soccer coaching courses in favor of drills and training methods. This book tackles the tough task of preparing for, executing and analyzing the match.

An Outline for a Book.......2004-05-15
Four systems of play are covered (4-3-3, 3-5-2, 4-4-2, 3-4-3) in a grand total of 28 pages. That's an average of 7 pages per system covered. In my opinion, that should be the length of the introduction to these systems. If you are looking for a book to guide you in your decision as to what system to use with your team...THIS IS NOT THE BOOK! No descriptions are given as to what kinds of players could fill the roles in each of the systems. No details are given on how different situations are dealt with given different player alignments. One sample training session is given for each system which would probably take up 20-30 minutes of practice time. There is no discussion on variants of each system. This book does not live up to its title!
An excellent overview, neither too simple nor too technical.......2001-06-23
This book, by Danish authors, seeks to explain the major systems of play, as well as attacking strategies for different aspects of the game (set pieces such as corner kicks, throw ins, free kicks, etc.) The book covers the major systems (4-4-2, 3-5-2, 4-3-3...) and gives both a sample training session and an example of how a well-known team has played each system. This section on systems of play is probably the most valuable portion of the book, and makes it worth buying.
The rest of the book focuses on various other aspects of the game, mostly set pieces. Several different options are given, and easy to read diagrams are provided for each of them. The authors also talk briefly about the style of play of different regions of the world (South America, Europe, Africa), and make some observations about each, but this section is really very limited, as the discussion mentions only those general characteristics of each (For example, the South American style is generally characterized by players who are highly skilled with the ball, and teams who try to score as a result of possessing the ball.) and does not really compare and contrast their merits or deficits to any real extent.
Also briefly mentioned are topics such as player psychology, coaching philosophy and methods, and other game situations like penalty kicks. These topics are also relatively limited in scope, although the information they provide is worthwhile.
Overall this is a very good book on tactics, one that is certainly worth reading for the systems of play portion, but the other sections, while they are adequate, fail to live up to that measure of quality. An additional critique of the book is that the Danish style of long ball direct play does tend to predominate some of the discussion in each area. Notwithstanding these elements, however, I do recommend this book for anyone who is interested in learning more about tactics and systems of play.
Planning For A Successful Soccer Team Performance.......2000-07-03
An informative book for all individuals interested in learning the basics of Soccer team play and performance. The author provides information concerning the fundimentals, and development of systems of play, & styles of play. Attacking & defensive styles of play are outlined as well as providing information on how various countries have adapted a soccer style of play. Team tactics and technical training are other subjects covered in general terms. There is an interesting and informative chapter relating to Coaching, the role of the coach, methods of training, and building a team. A chapter diagramming plays when there are dead ball situations is most interesting with regard to player alignment, and the vairous steps required to execute a successful play. This book is a good start for all those who would like to get to learn the basics of Soccer team play and further pursue a more detailed knowledge of the game.
