Changing the way you look at work.......2001-12-29
Barbara Glantz has written a life altering book--at least a life at the workplace altering book. It is easy to read and filled with hundreds of big and little things that can change the way you spend 40 hours a week. Very positive, super ideas.
There are better books on the topic..........2001-01-07
This book is just okay. There are a lot of examples of how to improve morale at work, but the writing isn't that great, and the book isn't very well organized. There are much better books on the topic...try Managing to Have Fun by Matt Weinstein or 1001 Ways to Energize Employees by Bob Nelson.

Organizational Ethics in Health Care: Principles, Cases, and Practical Solutions
ASIN: 0195129806 |
Book Description
The ethical aspects of the operation of healthcare organizations (HCOs) are central to the delivery of health care. Organization Ethics in Health Care begins by assessing the shortcomings of clinical ethics, business ethics, and professional ethics as a basis for solving problems that have emerged in healthcare delivery systems since the advent of managed care. The text focuses on the meaning of the developent of the HCO in our society and what its present status is. The authors point out that moral parameters endorsed by society have guided previous shifts in the relationships among important HCO stakeholders, but that these parameters have been unclear or missing altogether during the past tumultous decade. Finally, they describe the key elements for the successful implementation of a fully functioning healthcare organization ethics program and what it can mean to the institution, its associated clinicians and employees, its patients, and its community. Moving from theory to practical application, this book will serve as an excellent student text, a professional guide, and a reference work.

Book Description
An exciting and important addition to organizational change and health care management literature, this topical book presents academically rigorous theory and a unique assessment of NHS change processes.
Influenced by implementation methods, and also by the wider context, organization political issues and the nature of the changes themselves, the changes under consideration in this book are mostly large-scale, major, systemic, transformational, and strategic in their substance and intent. Some of the smaller-scale change processes explored here are significant as contributing elements to the wider strategic agenda. Structured in three distinct parts, this book investigates: context, experience, and implications.
Though process-based explorations of change have a reputation for confirming complexity, while omitting to generate practical advice, in this book, each chapter uses up-to-the-minute research and practical applications of theory to provide readers with a balanced and practical approach while retaining a high standard of academic rigor making this an ideal text for students, researchers and practitioners in the fields of healthcare, public management and organizational behavior.

Customer Reviews:
Leadership in Health Care.......2006-12-05
I read the book, "The Leadership Revolution in Health Care--Altering Systems, Changing Behaviors" by Tim Porter-O'Grady and Cathleen Krueger Wilson. As one who enjoys reading books, the length was not of particular concern (323 pages of readable text). What were the matters of interest, however, were the redundancy and the writing style.
The authors repeated themselves several times throughout the book. The same ideas seemed only to be rephrased and written over again. Not only were ideas repeated many times, but random details would be added in with the particular repeated fact. This caused the topics of the book to be fairly disjointed--key concepts were scattered and explained in various places throughout the text.
The writing style was not only repetitive, but dry as well. It seemed to draw on many references, again accounting for disjointed style. The book was very difficult to get into in the beginning. Towards the middle of the book, the writing style could be forgiven to some extent because the content was fairly compelling. However, by the last third of the book, the concepts were being repeated and needless detail spelled out.
The title of the book leads the reader on to believe that he or she will learn specifically about the health care system. Although the health care system is discussed, the transformation that management style is undergoing was generalized. Omitting a few parts here and there would render this book one that is focused on business or corporate management rather than specifically health care settings.
On a lighter note, when the book is finished the concepts stay with the reader because of the repetition. The content is also useful in looking at the coming dynamics in the workplace. What this book teaches is undoubtedly useful in any profession. It doesn't necessarily provide tools to overcome the changes that are happening (or will happen) in the workplace, but does provide a comprehensive understanding of the changes and the skills needed to handle them appropriately.
Overall, this book provided me with solid information that I was not previously equipped with. I would not recommend this book as my first choice, but it isn't the worst book to work through if you're looking for leadership guidance in the health care system.
One of the best health leadership books around right now!!.......1999-04-22
Great futuristic leadership book for health care. It has a broad base and provides both the context for the many health care changes underway and suggests specific strategies to address them. A lot of creative and effective management techniques are outlined that are practical and challenge the traditional management notions. Well worth the price. I highly recommend it.
The best on conteporary leadership issues in Health service.......1998-03-23
Good futuristic text for leaders. Very practical insights and useful to the manager and clinical leader. It can be used by any level of leadership and has real applicability in the current transformation in healthcare. It is rare to find both good insight and usefulness in the same text without a lot of jargon.

Book Description
There has been much speculation about the introduction of the contract culture in the public services and its consequences for those involved (including service users). This book, which is based on original research, sets out to examine the impact of contracts in three areas of the public service: health, social services, and other government activities. These findings are set in the context of policy development for the public sector as a whole. Detailed case studies in selected areas reveal the varying different patterns that have emerged. A study of the attitudes of those involved illuminates the different perspectives of participants. In the concluding chapters the authors review the policy implications of the study and identify likely future developments.
Book Description
Applying state-of-the-art application of management and organizational thinking and research to health care organizations, this book targets those in health professions and health services management. This invaluable resource is grounded in contemporary research and thinking, and offers broad coverage from hospitals to biotech companies. Updated material has been added throughout to reflect the latest changes in healthcare management. This new edition includes nationally prominent authors and co-authors.
Customer Reviews:
very good text.......2005-10-18
This text is very detailed and loaded with examples. It is very easy to read.
Practical discussion on a complex organization.......2000-10-07
The book provides practical concepts for healthcare administrators. The extensive use of charts, tables and diagrams has been very helpful in presenting complex concept. Even though many of the concepts presented are not new, the practical examples cited helps to bring out present application of the concept.
While the book has been written in the US setting, I find it applicable to my work in Thailand. I intend to use the book for the administration residency program which we are conducting at our group of hospitals.

Book Description
This book presents a unique, in-depth examination of the effects that the popular approaches to management organizational change--downsizing, restructuring, and reengineering--had on a major American hospital. The Human Cost of a Management Failure shows what can happen when management insists on accomplishing its ends strictly by the numbers. The authors ask why top management so often, and with seemingly such a cavalier attitude, selects downsizing and similar methods when research indicates that they are all too often such poor choices. Based on a year-long longitudinal study, Allcorn, Baum, Diamond, and Stein report on their interviews with 23 senior and mid-level hospital administrators, then interpret their findings from a psychoanalytic perspective, to make clear that the human side of the workplace can only be ignored at great risk when change is contemplated and then implemented. This is essential reading not only for corporate management, but also for other professionals and academics throughout the social and behavioral sciences. Readers of The Human Cost of a Management Failure are oriented to the literature on downsizing, restructuring and reengineering, and to the context of the study. Case material follows, enabling readers to draw their own conclusions with regard to the nature of the organizational change and its effects upon the hospital's employees, and consultants offer their own viewpoints. An update of events at the hospital after the study was conducted is provided along with summaries by each author of his own interpretation and how he interprets the others' views. In this way, readers will get an unusual opportunity to evaluate their own viewpoints against those of the psychoanalytically trained researchers, and to decide for themselves whether there are, in fact, better ways to make an organization economically competitive in the marketplace.
Customer Reviews:
Overpriced.......2004-07-05
The book does address significant managerial errors in judgment. However, the book actually draws attention to ethical reasoning in psychoanalytic terms and concepts. Principals, precepts, and concepts are really old issues brought back from the 1990's into the here and now of 2004. These errors in judgment are perpetuated from generation to generation. Little has changed in the eight years since the book was published, especially in some medical institutions and in universities that host medical training programs. The ethical questions continue to be unaddressed and the consequential conflicts unresolved.
