This book is very informative and the personal assessment at the end of the chapters will make you really look at yourself. This book also has an online site that is helpful.

4 out of 5 stars You most likely don't have a choice.......2004-06-01

This book is practically written to reinforce common sense stuff dealing with health. Unfortunetly many of us choose to forget these things soon after we learn them. this book for many of us is not a "fun read" rather a requirement for a class.
You can read this book in about 5 hours and pass the class. I did!

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars I agree with some points...........2006-03-06

I was expecting a little more from the book than what was offered. I felt as if I were being told how to feel rather than being comforted with words. Perhaps I mustn't be so senstive. Infertility is not an easy subjet to discuss and hurt feelings are bound to arise. I didn't seek medical help until my husband and I tried for three years. According to this book, that's a huge no-no and I was almost frightened that there might be absolutely no hope since we delayed our trip to the doctor.
Try to keep an open mind when reading this book.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful And Comforting.......2006-01-21

We received this book as a gift while dealing with our long infertility journey. It was such a blessing to have the compassion and reassurance this book provided during a time of our lives that was so hard and lonely (lonely because unless you have gone through it, you can't really understand it). After God blessed us with a child I passed this book on to another friend who was dealing with infertility as well. She was so pleased and relieved to get this book once she opened the pages and began to also receive it's reassurance and support.

5 out of 5 stars Useful Christian resource for infertility.......2005-08-02

I was so pleased to finally be able to read this book. It was great to hear about infertility from both the husband's and wife's points of view. I felt like my struggles with infertility were validated and discovered that there are others feeling the same things as I do. This book does take a Christian perspective to infertility, which I appreciated. While the authors do give some perspective on assisted reproductive technologies, I would also recommend speaking with your pastor or spiritual advisor to find out what your church group thinks, as I have discovered it varies some between denominations. I appreciated all the great web links and other resources the authors outlined in the book as well. A read well worth it.

3 out of 5 stars When the Cradle is Empty-Answering Tough Questions about Infertility.......2005-07-19

Nice to have both spouses experiences with infertility expressed.
I did not agree with everything written in the book regarding assisted reproductive technology. I believe the Catholic understanding of always keeping the unitive and procreative aspects of the marital union intact. The end never justifies the means. Other than that, I was encouraged by the book.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have.......2005-04-26

I was sceptical about buying another book to "help" me through my struggles with infertility, but once I began to read this book I wished that I had purchased it much earlier. This book gives advice as well as reason why you may be asking hard questions about what you are doing wrong in your life to have to go through this. Because of reading this book I am strongly considering starting a support group in my area. I am very thankful that I was able to take the time to read this book.

This book really gives some concrete suggestions to try and also gives you the reason you need to try it that way; and it really makes sense. Great book.

4 out of 5 stars In My Top 10 List .......2006-01-23

This 278 page paperback book by Lynn Weiss Ph.D. is essentially a field guide for adults with ADHD, but without pushing the ADHD part. Dr. Weiss who is one of adult ADHD's pioneering authors and a champion of the brain diversity model of ADHD has done a solid job of presenting her arguments and strategies in this book. The first portion of the book looks at the emotional consequences of growing up with this specific type of brain wiring (ADHD) and suggests several strategies for undoing damage to self-esteem and identity.

The rest of this book focuses on a wide variety of essential life skills and is definitely geared towards adults who are suffering from ADHD related difficulties such as organizing, time management, and financial skills to name but a few. The Strategies Sections have been well organized and broken down into five main topic areas; Organizing in New Ways, Following through to Success, Behaving Yourself, Using and Protecting Your Sensitivity, and Succeeding at Work.

Although I do not completely share the author's views, I have found this book to be extremely valuable, both personally and with clients. The breadth of the book is outstanding in that it covers such a wide range of topics, and they are extremely easy to locate and understand. The book is laid out in a way that allows readers to flip through it and pick out whatever topic is of importance or interest. For example, if you are experiencing issues around clutter you can just pick up the book, open it and go to the section that tells you how to deal with clutter. As is always the case the book is certainly not a panacea, but it will help jumpstart the reader's ability to better manage their negative symptoms, as well as build on their strengths.

In terms of presentation and lay out the author has done a very good job, the pages are all two columned with well bolded and italicized portions, and there is also ample room for note taking in the margins.

This book definitely makes my top 10 list of adult ADHD books and is an essential part of any well stocked adult ADHD library.

In terms of criticisms I only have one and it is that there is no index in the book, which is an oversight I just do not understand. Though the book is well laid out and has a well developed table of contents indexes are still vital, because they help individuals who have a hard time making their way through entire books, allowing them to hone

5 out of 5 stars Weiss has done it again.......2005-10-04

I've been researching ADD for over a year now and was in need of some practical suggestions to cope...and found it in this book...written in a down-to-earth, amusing manner, it is one of the best books I've run across for help in a while. I recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars The first book on ADD that I found useful.......2004-11-22

This is an excellent book; the structure basically consists of three part scenarios. A scenario is presented wherein an ADD person performs an act "outside the socially/cognitively/emotionally acceptable box; this is followed by a "mock" internal appraisal (usually a self-denigrating put-down by the individual); then an explanation of why the ADD mind responds to his/her unique response negatively; and finally a step-by-step cognitive/behavioral approach to thinking about the event in a more affirming context. Issues include disordered lifestyles, environments, impulsive acts, overidentification with suffering and injustice, etc. This stuff works! And it's written in a style that is neither too pedestrian that a discerning reader would be turned off nor in the often fulsomely upbeat manner along the lines of "Wow, I'm so lucky I have ADD!" ONE bit of ADVICE, however. This book should NOT be read as an introduction to ADD behavior. It should be read after you've read some of the basic popular books like Hallowell and others. Lynn Weiss, a psychologist who has ADD, is assuming you come to the book with a fairly broad understanding of the issues confronting people with ADD-behavior. That is reasonable, although it would have been nice if she had mentioned it.

5 out of 5 stars Practical, helpful, maybe not just for ADD.......2004-08-06

I was put off by the title, because I thought "achieving focus" would be a book about meditation or some vague New Age platitudes. Instead, the book has specific, helpful, practical advice for specific problematic situations. I was interested in the book because I thought it would help my ADD husband. However, I also found some of my own problems described on some pages.

Two minor criticisms, both related to grammar: I wish the author had used more commas to break up long sentences into logical clauses. Also, I wish the author would not use the word "they" when the author means "he/she". For example, in one section that gave advice about communicating with one's spouse, there was a sentence that said something like "if they say..." rather than "if he/she says" or "if your spouse says". I was confused. I was wondering who "they" were who suddenly appeared in a paragraph about a one-to-one conversation with one's spouse. "They" only makes sense if you have several spouses. I sometimes had to read a paragraph twice, even though I am normally a fast reader and a quick study. These grammar flaws are minor annoyances; the book is still very helpful.

Our culture constantly shows how leaders have failed-from Bill Clinton's indiscretion to Martha Stewart's deception, from the business collapse at Enron to the military meltdown at Abu Ghraib prison. Many church problems likewise can be traced back to a failure of leadership. Such problems are nothing new. Stories of leadership failures are chronicled throughout the Bible. "If you can't lead yourself, you won't be effective at leading others. Self leadership precedes strategic leadership." With this perspective, Michael Slaughter, lead pastor and chief visionary at Ginghamsburg United Methodist Church (www.ginghamsburg.org), explains his model for daily living, which he has adapted from the Psalms of Ascent. His five life practices for balance and self-leadership together form the acronym D-R-I-V-E: Devotion to God, Readiness for lifelong learning, Investing in key relationships, Visioning for the future, and Eating and Exercise for life. Taken together, they shape life as an upward momentum. They remind you that leadership is not about entitlement, but example. Every follower of Christ needs to find the self-management practices that create momentum for life and guard against the temptation to downsize God's dream. "God can't steer a parked car," Slaughter says. "God is looking for people who will take their lives out of park and shift them into drive." These leadership tools will inspire and show you how to sustain personal health, integrity, and strategic focus as a leader.

4 out of 5 stars Ready to get past your faith plateau?.......2007-09-24

We all reach a point in our lives when God is "comfortable", a time when not much is happening - a spiritual plateau. And we all know that this is not where God wants us to be. We need to be always growing spiritually, mentally, emotionally, and physically toward that man or woman that we were created to be. Pastor Slaughter challenges us in this book with a biblical life-model that gets our blood pumping again and sets our hearts back on a productive path for God. This is a great book for a small group study.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Leadership Disciplines.......2006-12-08

Momentum For Life is an excellent, well-organized book on leadership by Michael Slaughter of the Ginghamsburg United Methodist Church in Tipp City, Ohio. As a pastor I found that the book offered helpful insights for pastors in both the pastoral and personal realm. I think the book would be helpful to anyone looking for a challenge and a structure for organizing for personal growth.

    Book Description

The mental technique of imagery—demonstrated, for example, when a dancer pictures a sunflower reaching toward the sun as he/she stretches upward—is thoroughly explained in this guide to daily stress-relieving routines. Movement, coordination, flexibility, and posture are discussed as external characteristics that can be improved significantly with a strong inner focus, and the same conclusion is reached in chapters on the benefits of good mental health for circulation, breathing, and even individual body cells. Practical advice proceeds from this background information, including how to choose and use an assortment of personal mental images, how to use tricks such as "mental recycling," and how to set up an imagined "portable fitness studio" during stress-inducing dead time waiting in line, climbing stairs, sitting in an airplane seat, talking on the telephone, or running the vacuum cleaner.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This Was a Good Choice.......2007-01-18

I had already read much of Franklin's book Conditioning for Dance. I found it very insightful and full of potential help for the physical pain I experience, but as I have no dance experience and was not familiar with many of the dance terms, I thought that perhaps one of his books about alignment for lay people might be better.

I didn't have funds to buy several of his books at this time, so I chose Inner Focus, Outer Strength: Using Imagery and Exercise for Health, Strength and Beauty. I absolutely love the focus this book has on finding joy in movement and letting that be at the heart of all your fitness activity. And I really delight in the imagery excercises in this book. Last night I fell asleep imagining one of the excercises I had just learned - my body felt so relaxed.

For those who haven't read anything by Eric Franklin, he specializes in presenting imagery that helps people to understand, heal, and relax their bodies. It isn't hocus pocus type stuff, but the kind of healing that happens simply through understanding and being able to picture what is happening as you use your body.

Text book anatomy and physiology seemed boring to me in the past, but Franklin has a way of making me want to learn it. It is a joy to understand more of the workings of the human body. He makes anatomy learning a delight and I'm considering purchasing both Dynamic Alignment Through Imagery by Franklin and a book by another author entitled Anatomy of Movement (by Blandine Calais-Germain).

5 out of 5 stars Another Excellent book by Eric Franklin.......2006-10-25

I have all of his books, even Conditioning for Dance even though I have never done any sort of organized dance in my life. Although his books might seem a little superficial at first glance, you will soon realize that Franklin knows far more about the how the body moves than you could ever imagine. Eric Franklin is so far ahead of other "fitness gurus" that there is no comparison. He truly understands how paying more attention to your posture and movement can dramatically affect your whole life. You'll never really get rid of that tension headache or that pain in the neck unless you start listening to what your body is trying to tell you.

Having just completed a review of this book for a class that I will be teachign in the fall. Bever, goes to great lengths to stress steps that can be taken to improve the safety of individuals not only in the home, but also in the workplace, and on the road. I highly reccomend this text for either the college or the high school levels, but this definitly isn't a recreational reading book.

    Book Description

This breakthrough book presents a disarmingly simple idea: The way we pay attention in daily life can play a critical role in our health and well-being. According to Dr. Les Fehmi, a clinical psychologist and researcher, many of us have become stuck in “narrow-focus attention”: a tense, constricted, survival mode of attention that holds us in a state of chronic stress—and which lies at the root of common ailments including anxiety, depression, ADD, stress-related migraines, and more. To improve these conditions, Dr. Fehmi explains that we must learn to return to a relaxed, diffuse, and creative form of attention, which he calls “Open Focus.”

This highly readable and empowering book offers straightforward explanations and simple exercises on how to shift into a more calm, open style of attention that reduces stress, improves health, and enhances performance. The Open-Focus Brain features eight essential attention exercises for improving health, along with an audio CD in which the author guides the reader through fundamental Open-Focus exercises that can be used on a regular basis to enhance our health and well-being.

Dr. Fehmi writes, “Everyone has the ability to heal their nervous systems, to dissolve their pain, to slow down and yet accomplish more, to experience the deeper side of life—in short, to change their lives for the better dramatically.” At last readers can learn the techniques that Dr. Fehmi has offered to thousands of clients—the same drug-free, safe, and effective techniques that have led to remarkable and long-lasting results. The Open-Focus Brain offers readers a revolutionary, drug-free way to:

    alleviate depression, anxiety, and ADD

    reduce stress-related chronic pain

    optimize mental and physical performance

    Includes a 60-minute audio CD:

Essential attention exercises from the book, led by Dr. Fehmi

Listeners learn how to "train the brain" to reduce stress, anxiety, chronic pain, and more

Safe and effective techniques used in Dr. Fehmi's clinic for decades

    2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-10-09

I guess I'm missing something here. The text of the book consists mostly of anecdotes about how Open-Focus training can cure many ailments. I'm sure it can, but I would have rather seen the book explain the techniques that the reader can use to implement Open-Focus. This book doesn't explain how the exercises are supposed to bring a person from narrow focus to open focus. The exercises, both in the book and on the CD, are a series of questions asking the reader/listener to visualize the space between various body parts. I came away with no understanding of how visualizing the space between my eyes is supposed to help me become more focused and relaxed. I would really expect the authors to connect the dots here. Without that connection, I couldn't spend more than about ten minutes on the exercises.

I came away with a feeling that this there might be something here to explore, but that a better book could be written about it.

Audio books that I've found much more helpful are: "Meditation for Optimum Health: How to Use Mindfulness and Breathing to Heal Your Body and Refresh Your Mind: by Andrew Weil and Jon Kabat-Zinn, "Heal Yourself With Medical Hypnosis: The Most Immediate Way to Use Your Mind-Body Connection!" by Andrew Weil and Steven, Ph.D. Gurgevich, "
Mindfulness Meditation - Cultivating the Wisdom of Your Body and Mind" by Jon Kabat-Zinn, or "Meditation for Beginners" by Jack Kornfield.

5 out of 5 stars The included CD is terrific!.......2007-10-02

I approached this book with pure skepticism. I thought it would be boring, and, as a scientist, I could not believe that a few simple exercises could begin to alleviate the mental and physical pain of stress and depression. But I was wrong!

Fehmi combines his years of research and experience with a forthright and simple presentation. His humanism shines throughgout the book.

The text is simple and clear, and I found myself, wanting to learn more with each chapter I read. In addition, the included CD is terrific, especially, as I love to listen to audio books. My favorite exercises, "Expanding Your Awareness of Visual Space" and "Seeing in Open Focus", are particularly useful to me, in reducing the chronic tension that lives in my shoulder muscles.

    Buy this book!

5 out of 5 stars simple and effective.......2007-09-08

Strongly agree with the above review. Fehmi clearly points out the destructive and healing affects of the way we pay attention. I found the practices in the book to be simple and effective even while reading in a bookstore. Most of the key concepts are not new, as they can be traced back to ancient meditation techniques and understanding. However, backed by over 30 years of practice Fehmi outlines a refreshingly down to earth assessment and implementation of attention in everyday living. As an artist, this book has helped me to realize the differences in attention that is such a critical part of the creative process. No doubt I was intuitively working with them before, but now they are much more apparent. Thanks to Dr. Fehmi for this wonderfully insightful book!

5 out of 5 stars Important, Groundbreaking, Destined to be Become a Self Help and Philosopical Classic, yet a great read. .......2007-08-31

This is an important, groundbreaking book that promises to become a classic that could very well become more and more widely read over the decades.

More than any other book, it reminds me of Herbert Benson's RELAXATION RESPONSE. Just as Benson took a simple concept-- relaxation-- and created a landmark book on how to do it... simply, Les Fehmi, with co-author Jim Robbins, has laid out an approach to attention that is remarkable in its simplicity and power to change lives.

As Fehmi points out, our lives, our experiences, all we know, are determined by how we pay attention. The process of paying attention is usually something we ignore. Yet, Fehmi teaches, we can easily learn how to become aware of how we are paying attention and then voluntarily pay attention as we choose to.

Fehmi walks us through the ways that narrowed, inflexible attention leads to stress and stress disorders, depression, reduced performance, even diminished relationships. The good news is he provides practical, easy to learn and implement techniques which work-- and quickly, at that.

I first learned the Open Focus technique from Les Fehmi 30 years ago. I've used them ever since in my life and as a trainer and consultant teaching newcomer physicians, psychologists, counselors, educators, etc. the field of biofeedback and self regulation. I've taught hundreds of practitioners this technique because I believe it is very effective and powerful.

This book has been long overdue and will be highly valuable to both lay readers and professional psychologists. Fehmi's co-author Jim Robbins is an extraordinary writer who has helped Fehmi to take his ideas and put them into a fun and fascinating to read language that makes this book almost as engaging as a great novel.

Dr. Fehmi has been a consultant to the Dallas Cowboys, Golf Pros, ther US Olympic team and so many others who have benefited from these techniques. He's polished and fine tuned them with biofeedback and brain assessment technologies. This means that, unlike many techniques, Open Focus has been objectively measured and tested with brain wave technologies such as neurofeedback devices and brain maps.

Ask yourself. How much thought have you given to the way YOU pay attention. What are the parameters you assess? What "handles" do you have for modulating and adjusting your attention for different situations? Most people don't have good answers to these questions. This book provides them.

Some people will approach this book as a self-help book for healing disorders caused by stress, anxiety, etc.

Some will, like the pro teams and players who have hired Dr. Fehmi, approach this book as an aid to help improve performance, to reach peak performance and optimal functioning.

Some will seek out this book to help their personal relationships.

Some will approach it as a map for achieving higher consciousness and or spiritual deepening.

All will find answers that will make a difference in their lives and work.

As the founder organizer of one of the world's largest biofeedbac meetings, my job has been to bring together the best and the brightest leaders. Les Fehmi has, with his wife Susan, always been one of the best. The presentations have always drawn big crowds of other experts and leaders in the fields of biofeedback, peak performance, positive psychology, neurofeedback, stress management, meditation and relaxation. The experts come to hear Fehmi because he combines science and solid theory with practical, easy to use techniques. This book does the same thing.

This is one of the few books I'd like my adult children to read, and I'll be passing on copies to any of my employees who want to read it too.

Do I sound enthusiastic? It's a real joy to see that the life work of one of the scientist practitioner psychologists I've come to respect has been put on the printed page in such a stunning, powerful way. You do yourself a great disservice if you fail to avail yourself of the unique, original ideas and life strategies you'll find in this book.

Last but not least, I was amazed to see tht the book includes a CD with guided Open Focus exercises on it. They've always sold separately. Fehmi has given his all on this.
