Good for entry level information.......2007-01-22
I use this book to teach a Graphic Production class. This is a good entry level book to wet one's interest in the broad scope of each part of the printing production process. It touchs on everything from scheduling to design to prepress to actually getting it on press al the way through the bindery and shipping processes. Without this basic understanding, new design students have no understanding of what they are creating. This gives a brief snippet about each process. The early designer then at least has an idea of how their final products will possibly be used.
Each area of print production can have its own book and ideally designers will learn these processes in depth. As an entry level book however this has all of the basics without overwhelming the student. It also delivers the dry information that creative folks need in simple clear form. After thirty years in this industry I welcome the simplicity this book provides.

This book teaches you everything you want to know, need to know and more than you can remember after you've read it. "Getting It Printed" is definitely a great reference book to keep close by your side for an immediate informational refresher upon a moments notice. I used this book for an online print production course and will not resell it due to its priceless contents.
If you need a book like this, you can do better........2006-06-25
I have two books currently which are much better than this one. I'm not really interested in spending the next hour of my life typing up a really exhaustive commentary on this book, as this is the first one I've ever done, but I'm just hoping to save you some time and money and I feel very strongly this is a bad book and a waste of your efforts.
It was the required textbook for my Print Production class, and I could've gotten a better understanding of Print Production by sniffing the ink on my local newspaper. The glossary is substandard, the chapters are, to say the least, hardly informative, and the author is often contradictive of his own statements. It doesn't seem as though he has an understanding of Print Production at all. I spent days staring at this book wondering why I didn't understand print, till I realized it wasn't my brain, I had bought a crappy book.
I won't say some of the elements aren't useful, but you'd be better off shopping at the used bookstore by my school, for example, and picking up a used copy for ten bucks. There will be plenty there. You can get everything useful in this book from the Graphics Master (a much better book) or any other Print Production book.
Try Kaj Johansen (spelling... sorry) or Adobe's Print Production Guide. Also, International Paper occassionally prints a guide. Don't buy this one. Graphics Master Seven or Eight would be of MUCH more use to you.
Book Description
The facts are nothing short of startling--no matter how many people seem to walk down the aisle, the divorce rate in America is at a record high. What's the secret to getting into a happy marriage and, even more important, staying in one? Now world-renowed psychiatrist Dr. William Glasser and his wife, Carleen Glasser, update their classic guide to successful marriages, Staying Together, for couples young and old. As they examine the questions of why some marriages work and others fail, the Glassers advise readers on how to create loving and happy relationships by applying Dr. Glasser's trademark "choice theory." The result is a wealth of new information about who would make a compatible partner and how to improve any relationship.
Customer Reviews:
Glasser, the choice theory master.......2006-08-21
William Glasser really helps me to understand the basics of a healthy relationship...how and why we tend to get and stay together, and ways to sustain relationships. His advice is rooted in healthy common sense. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to find or retain a good 'significant other' type relationship. Glasser's "Choice Theory" is another must-read.
One of the greatest thinkers of the past 50 years!.......2001-11-25
William Glasser, a world-renowned psychiatrist currently about 75 years old, originally came strongly into the limelight because of his seminal work in the 1960s, Schools without Failure. This book, and the progressive educational movement which arose from it, has been studied in teacher-training programs around the country for the last 30 years. In the early 1980s, Dr. Glasser developed an additional theory of human relationship for which he is also famous. It was originally called "control theory" and later renamed "choice theory" in the book by that same name from the 1990s. This book, Getting Together and Staying Together (GTST) is in the tradition of Dr. Glasser's choice theory ideas.
Of Dr. Glasser's published works, besides GTST, I have so far read the following: Schools without Failure, Control Theory, Choice Theory, The Language of Choice Theory, Reality Therapy in Action, What Is This Thing Called Love?, and Fibromyalgia: Hope from a Completely New Perspective. Based on reading all these books, my opinion is that if you are just discovering Dr. Glasser, GTST is probably the very best of his many works for your initial introduction to choice theory for the following reasons: (1) the book is relatively short; (2) it is easy to read; (3) it goes very concisely and clearly into every aspect of choice theory; (4) the information in it applies to every kind of relationship, not just marriage.
I am very impressed with Dr. Glasser's chosen writing style. I have not been privileged to hear Dr. Glasser speak in person, but my guess is that the reason his prose is so extremely accessible is that he writes in the same sensitive, direct, caring voice he uses to train therapists and to counsel his clients. As he so profoundly states in this and many of his other books on choice theory, the foundation of all progress in therapy is the client's trust in the therapist. And trust is based in several important qualities of the therapist, including: simplicity, honesty, directness, empathy and compassion.
Another cornerstone of Dr. Glasser's remarkable ideas is the highly unusual belief that the purpose of therapy is to get done with it as quickly and effectively as possible. I have spent many frustrating years observing fellow mental health professionals who believe (because they were trained to, and because it is so very profitable a practice) that it is "simply not possible to begin any meaningful therapy until adequate time has been spent discussing the scope of the client's problem." Unfortunately for therapy clients, "adequate" is usually defined as a minimum of five, and usually ten, 50-minute sessions of rehashing the client's entire life history billed out at $100-250/hour. In delightful contrast, Dr. Glasser states that from the very first second that he meets a new client, he wants to get the therapy moving toward teaching the client self-reliance based in self-responsibility. In pursuit of this goal, he refuses to waste time mulling over the client's painful past. He believes a therapist's proper focus is what is making the client miserable, right now, and that this is invariably trouble with an important relationship.
In short, the overall goal of Dr. Glasser's unique therapy (called "reality therapy") is to lead his clients to see that they are =not= helpless, hopeless victims of fate. Instead, he assists them in discovering that they have the wherewithal, at all times and places, to examine the current choices they are making, figure out if those choices are causing more pain than they are eliminating, and make new and better choices as needed.
I would highly recommend this wonderful book to you if you feel you are having trouble achieving close, intimate, emotional connections with others (either through not having a close relationship at all, or not feeling intimacy with someone who is supposed to be very close to you, such as a spouse). Also, if you read this book or any other written by Dr. Glasser and are impressed with his ideas, you can get a referral for a therapist in your area trained at the William Glasser Institute by contacting the institute directly via the internet. (I am not permitted to provide the web site here, but I located it easily for myself by using a search engine.)
Love after Marriage.......2000-06-12
Whoever wrote the words "for better or worse" into the marriage vows obviously had some experience of what the Glassers call "the mystery of marriage". How is it that people who get together into this most public of declarations of love find it so hard to stay together or even to stay as friends? The book "Getting Together and Staying Together" examines this issue in detail referring to marriage as "a practice in desperate need of improvement".
The book has an interesting history. It is written by a well-known and very experienced psychiatrist and his wife is co-author. It is a rewrite of a book that Dr. Glasser himself published in 1995 practically on the eve of his marriage to Carleen. The new version collates the wisdom of both their professional lives and especially of their married life together. As such it is a wonderful mixture of the therapist's eye and a couple's down-to-earth daily experience. Where the original "Staying Together" started from a Choice Theory perspective and applied it to marriage, this new book takes different marriage experiences as the starting point and processes the experiences in terms of Choice Theory. The mixture of e-mail messages, discussions, therapy examples and courageous self-disclosure by both authors bring this book to life and give it a very practical value. It even has a chapter on the surprisingly neglected topic of "sex after marriage".
Drawing interesting comparisons between marriage and friendship the authors show how the dangers of external control psychology creep so easily into married life. They speak of the "seven deadly habits" (criticism, blaming, complaining, nagging, threatening, punishing and bribing) that hasten this death of marriage. They also point to how certain differences in a couple's needs intensities can make it more difficult to have a good relationship.
This book has a lot to offer any relationship but it would be fair to say that it deals most specifically with the more formal structures that encircle and threaten the marriage bond. The Glassers offer both the theoretical base and practical suggestions for improving, even resuscitating, a relationship. Most important of all, the book offers the reader a total shift in perspective. It elaborates a truly possible but not necessarily easy answer to the "joyless tedium" of an endangered relationship. It invites each person to take control of what the person really can control. One area it does not deal with explicitly is the changing nature of the relationship when children are born but it is a relatively easy matter for the reader to apply the Choice Theory principles to these and other situations.
I would very much recommend this book to anyone, married or not. Indeed it would provide excellent discussion material for pre-marriage courses and even for social and personal classes for young people. This is one of those rare books where the authors are preaching what they already practise ... and it's very definitely "for better".
Book Description
An internationally known expert and Harvard Medical School professor offers an up-to-date guide for treating Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.
Six million Americans suffer from Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), and they know firsthand the often devastating effects it has on their lives. Some symptoms, such as the nagging feeling you have left the stovetop burner on, can be mildly distracting. Yet others, like compulsive hand washing, the inability to throw anything out, or nerve-racking feelings of guilt, can be completely paralyzing and make it nearly impossible for sufferers to lead healthy lives. Dr. Baer gives readers the tools to assess their own symptoms, set goals, and create therapeutic programs for themselves. He also helps readers differentiate between OCD and other psychological illnesses such as depression. From the latest treatments to important facts on the medications currently available and how they work, Getting Control is thorough, concise, and positive--a lifesaver for anyone whose well-being is affected by OCD.
Customer Reviews:
more helpful for some than for others.......2005-08-21
This is a very good book for people suffering from compulsions--actual physical rituals such as handwashing, for example--but is less helpful for people suffering from "pure obsessions"--that is, ruminations without overt compulsions. A number of recent books address "pure obsessions" much better than this one.
this book wasn't right for me........2002-06-15
I was looking for a step by step process, but this book isn't written that way. If you're looking for a step by step process..this isn't it. One thing I don't like about this book is that it's more like stories of the authors patients and also the author keep saying I will talk about something in chapter so and so, I talked about it in chapter so and so....sign of a bad self help book.
Good Purchase!.......2002-04-04
I was extremely pleased with the easy to read and follow instructions in this book. I was able to follow the program quickly and easily. I would definately recommend.
A wonderful and amazing book.......2001-02-06
This book -- and a similar one by Joseph Ciarrochi called "The Doubting Disease" -- helped turn my life around when I was deep under with OCD. Now I am so much better, and I am forever grateful. If you have OCD then don't waste your life not reading this book.
The Book that will make your OCD symptoms go away.......2000-09-12
After reading this book,I practiced some of the anti-OCD methods described in this book, and was quite successful. Baer pulls no punches in this compelling examination of OCD,it's pain, and the methods used in recovering from it. As with Jeffrey Schwartz's Brain Lock, and Judith Rapoport's The Boy Who Couldn't Stop Washing,it's filled with other Ocd sufferers' experiences,so you won't feel isolated from the rest of the world. The book isn't that long,so you can be on the road to recovery in a few days.

Book Description
Creative folks often know all too well that the muse doesn’t always strike when you want it to, or when the deadline for your next brilliant project is creeping up on you like an ill-fitting turtleneck. Originality doesn’t follow a time clock, even when you have to. While conventional time management books offer tons of instruction for using time wisely, they are traditionally organized in a linear fashion, which just isn’t helpful for the right-brain mind. In
Time Management for the Creative Person, creativity guru Lee Silber offers real advice for using the strengths of artistic folks—like originality and resourcefulness—to adopt innovative time-saving solutions, such as:
* Learning to say no when your plate is just too full
* How to know when a good job, not a great one, is good enough
* Making “to do” lists that include fun stuff, too—that way you won’t feel overwhelmed by work
* Time-saving techniques around the house that give you more time to get your work done and more time to spend with your loved ones
* The keys to clutter control that will keep your work space and your living space neat
With these and lots of other practical tips, Lee Silber will help anyone, from the time-starved caterer rushing to prepare for her next party to the preoccupied painter who forgets when the electric bill is due, make the most of their time and turn the clock and the calendar into friends, not foes.

Time Management for the Creative Person; Right-Brain Strategies for Stopping Procrastination, Getting Control of the Clock .......2007-04-15
I liked this book very much because it was written for people like me. I was given many explanations for my behavior without making me feel badly. Also there were many practical suggestions that one could start doing as soon as the book was read. I especially found the part on procrastination helpful.
Fantastic for people who cringe at the words "time management".......2005-06-23
If typical time-management advice leaves you cold, this book offers a refreshingly different perspective, and tons of practical ideas that are based on creative and abstract thinking, not linear, robotic instructions. This is for those of us who are usually 5 minutes late, who search the house for a slip of paper with vital information, and who find day-planners to be tedious and inconvenient. And this book never makes you feel guilty or inadequate for not following traditional advice on "productivity."
This book proposes that organization and time management strategies should be personalized and comfortable. They should be empowering, not restrictive, and make your life more relaxed, not more stressful. Until reading this book, I had not considered that this was possible. I have adopted many of the author's ideas and specific suggestions, and I have continued using them for over a year since I first read it. I've increased my freelance earnings, created a workspace I love to work in, and reduced the stress in my life. If you cringe at most time-management books, please read this one.
Save Your Money. Don't Buy This Book........2005-04-04
Proof that anyone can write a book. Do not waste your money on this -- it is worthless. You can do better by asking yourself about your time management faults and coming up with your own solutions. This book has nothing of value. It is full of typos and ridiculuous quotes.
one of the best of the genre.......2004-12-29
Mr. Silber has managed to write a book that is funny, down to earth, and immensely helpful. His stories are priceless, and the tips are ridiculously useful and easy to implement.
A waste of time and money.......2004-04-04
I expected this book to provide innovative, useful information; after all, I'm a creative professional, always have a million projects going on at the same time, and really could use some help. Unfortunately, instead of original advice targeted to people in creative fields, this book is geared to harried housewives and disorganzied hobbyists. It is crammed full of platitudes, cliches, anecdotes about quasi-celebrities ("As a stand-up comic, Gary Shandling enterains audiences by poking fun at himself..."), quizzes (Are you right-brained or left-brained?), quotations, items ripped directly from press releases ("According to a survey by Select Comfort ...") and bulleted lists of hints (focused primarily on housekeeping and automobile maintenance) including:
* Stop to smell the flowers (yes, he actually says this)
* Brush your dog or cat while watching your favorite TV show
* Choose plants that are easy to grow
* Make enough for two meals when you cook and freeze the second meal
* Use paper plates and cups
* Hire a cleaning service
* Get more sleep
Probably the worst piece of advice this book offers, though, is "the future will take care of itself." No, it won't, especially if a deadline is looming and the rent check is due! If you work in a creative field and are looking for advice about enhancing your creativity and/or better managing your time and projects, skip this book. It is a complete waste of time and money.

Customer Reviews:
Good book to have.......2005-08-10
There are many wonderful recipes in this book. I do wish the nutritional information was included with each of the recipes. I still plan to keep and use the book anyway!!
Cooking this with Kathleen Daelemans.......2005-01-19
I got this book because I watched her on TV every day and I have to say I use this book at least 5 times a week its so simple and easy and the meals are delicious and low fat I have been using if for 12 weeks now and along with exercising every day I have lost 22 pounds so far. This is the best book I have ever bought, if you want to lose weight and live a healther life this is the book for you
Too many ingredient lists!!!.......2005-01-07
I like the show and was interested in the book but have to say I was disappointed, mainly at the long ingredient lists for most of the recipes within. Plus I found it hard to believe there couldn't have been more of a variety of desserts offered that were 'cooked thin'. Her recipes seem abit far fetched in most cases and from the one, yes one recipe, that I tried it tasted like a diet recipe and it doesn't have to!
There was alot in the book about health and nutrition that is helpful but as a cookbook, I felt it lacked in the practical. I can't purchase oodles of ingredients for one recipe; I rather having several items on hand. Sorry, Kathleen!
Another great collection of recipes from Kathleen!.......2004-07-19
I love Kathleen's no-nonsense, no-off-limits-food, get-moving, eat-well approach to diet and exercise. I've lost 50 pounds in a year, and am using this book to get the next 50 pounds off. Her approach works and tastes great. I am not a food weigher, calorie counter kind of person, and her books don't require that. I also like that she includes recipes for foods that are tasty and so relatively low in calories that if you eat the entire 4 servings, you haven't derailed your diet forever. Some of my favorites in this book so far are the white bean and roasted red pepper salad, the apple/celery/pecan salad, the tabbouleh, and her orange-raisin breakfast bars. If you loved the first book and are looking for some similarly fantastic, high flavor, healthy recipes you will like this book!
Catch the Healthy Eating Movement.......2004-05-25
Kathleen is full of energy and passion on her show and in her cookbooks. And it is contagious! Both for her show and for her approach to dieting and cooking. There is so much good stuff in here, both motivational and cuisine.
Here is a sampling of the good cuisine: Ahi Tuna with Napa Cabbage Salad; Tex-Mex Chicken and Barley Soup with Avocado; Eggplant, Chicken and Basil Stir-Fry; Pork Tenderloin with Lemon Butter Sauce and Swiss Chard; Cashew Chicken; Balsamic Chicken with Pan-Roasted Carrots, Parsnips and Potatoes; Flank Steak, Sweet Potatoes and Cilantro Stir Fry.
We as we get older must watch what we consume (if you're not older yet you will do yourself a big favor to start eating better now) and so we need variety, food that is good for us and good to eat. Chef Kathleen's recipes continue to add variety and great food to my repoirtoie and I'm sure they'll accomplish that for you too.
As with her first cookbook, this one has the bases covered: main dishes, appetizers, desserts, sides, even sauces and salsas and breakfast.
Customer Reviews:
A must for all abused persons.......2007-10-10
This is a great book for everyone that's been verbally abused, past and present. There is nothing like reading firsthand from someone that has been through all the emotions herself. Marcia Powers writes what we all feel and gives us a way to cope and answers our fears about leaving.
Not helpful at all... Please don't get this..........2007-09-17
I have read several books on verbally abusive relationships and I had to put this one down half way through, because like a previous reviewer stated it really does put too much blame on the victim. I would not recommend this book to anybody who is trying to get out of a verbally abusive relationship.
One of the better books on the subject.......2007-01-12
This book talks about how to manage your life, whether you get out of a verbally abusive relationship or not. However, I really think any book dealing with the subject should also include information on how to escape a harmful relationship. This book is excellent at identifying the problem, and giving realistic ways of dealing with yourself. But no one can survive constant crushing blows to their spirit, self-esteem, and identities forever. If one becomes aware, one must make a change.
Shines a harsh light - both ways.......2005-11-16
This is a tough book. As you can probably tell from the other reviews, there is great divisiveness on what everyone thinks this book is trying to say. As someone very much acquianted with verbal abuse, it is very easy for me to see the passions arise about this book, just as the passions arise when verbal abuse happens. I hope I can shed some light on this very touchy subject.
On the one side, the abuser "justifies" their behavior by claiming that the victim "caused" him to act that way (I use "him" because that is the most common). The victim "blames" the abuser because the abuser has "caused" her to feel worthless and "beaten." I believe this is the most common dynamic.
Let's just all agree that verbal abuse is disrespectful, harmful, and in general not a healthy activity because of the damage that it causes. This book helps the victim of verbal abuse drop her "victimhood" and take charge of her life in standing up to the abuse and getting out of the relationship, which in most, if not all cases, is the best thing to do. It correctly and clearly states the hard facts: Verbal abusers rarely take the time and effort to change their behavior, quite often see nothing wrong with it, and usually won't even admit that they ARE verbally abusive in the first place. Sacrificing the abused's happiness and well being because they believe they can change the abuser is not healthy or realistic. It is the abuser that must change. That rarely happens.
The book also serves a secondary function by addressing the not often talked about notion of the personal responsibility of the victim; As in the case of Patricia Evan's books, victimhood is on par with sainthood; that author blames the abuser and glorifies the victim, yet doesn't acknowledge the underlying problem: Why does someone continue to endure this abuse? How does the victim avoid it in the future, and become resilient to its affects?
There must be an element of self-acceptance and other-acceptance by the abused in order for any real healing to begin. Self-esteem, as Ellis argues forcefully in his other books, is a dangerous myth. Only with self-acceptance and other acceptance, without leveling blame, and with recognizing that being a victim is not a lifestyle that one lives and is happy doing so, will the abused be able to begin the path to healing.
If you are a verbal abuser and are struggling to come to terms with your actions, this book will certainly give you practice in empathy. It will be difficult to read for you, but very cathartic. Highly recommended for both abusers and abused, if combined with Ellis' Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (A Guide to Rational Living).
The 'secret' strategies imparted here have been tested by time .......2005-10-14
Mistreatment by a partner usually is considered physical, so most books on abuse focus on physical abuse - but verbal abuse is just as damaging, and THE SECRET OF OVERCOMING VERBAL ABUSE: GETTING OFF THE EMOTIONAL ROLLER COASTER AND REGAINING CONTROL OF YOUR LIFE tells how to overcome it. The 'secret' strategies imparted here have been tested by time and aim to allow the reader to thwart self-doubt, guilt, depression and more. Author Albert Ellis is a renowned psychologist who works with psychological educator Marcia Grad Powers to create a program which works.

Grounded in the Word.......2007-03-10
The author's are extremely grounded in the Scriptures and this book will help you be grounded too. It functions a lot like a workbook once you get past the first 2/3, which is very helpful for this sort of thing. The authors by no means intended this as a quick fix for the reader. The answer to your problems with anger can't be dealt with via methods but only through God's grace. This book, however, has been a very effective means of grace that God has used for me. I recomend it over any other in it's catagory.
Getting Anger Under Control.......2005-08-14
The book that I ordered met all of my expectations regarding delivery, quality and condition.
Book Description
Childbirth is a life-altering experience for any woman, but a Cesarean delivery can be overwhelming, whether it’s unexpected or planned. Despite the fact that roughly one in four babies in the United States is delivered by c-section, very little information about the experience is included in typical pregnancy books and physicians and childbirth educators often gloss over the details.
The Essential C-Section Guide is written not only for women to read in preparation for a scheduled c-section and for those considered “high risk” who know that a c-section may become necessary but also for women recovering from an unexpected surgical delivery. This book provides answers to important questions about what the surgery entails, what a woman can expect as she recovers, and what considerations should be made for future pregnancies and deliveries.
With frank discussions about the physical and emotional aspects surrounding a c-section, the authors share comforting wisdom about early bonding, pain control, breastfeeding, infant care, healing from surgery, postpartum exercise, partner involvement, and much more, in detail not available anywhere else.
Written by authors who have firsthand knowledge of birth by c-section, The Essential C-Section Guide is well-researched and addresses its unique concerns with intelligence and compassion.

Great Information.......2007-09-29
I had to have a cesarean for medical reasons but couldn't find any information about what happens and what to expect afterwards. All the pregnancy books only had maybe a page about c-sections and wasn't helpful at all. This was a great reference. It made the whole experience easier to deal with and gave me the knowledge I needed to feel comfortable.
Helped ease my fears!.......2007-07-28
This book has helped ease my fears about having a C-Section. I have marginal placenta previa and my Dr. recommended a C-Section. After believing all my life I'd have a natural delivery, this was disappointing. I am more comfortable now that I've read the book, because I know what to expect and what questions to ask. The book has the good exercise section at the end, which I haven't quite read through yet, but that many reviewers find helpful.
Informative and reassuring.......2006-09-20
This is a really good book with a lot of detailed information to help any women who are fixing to have a c-section or have had one. I had a difficult labor that ended in an unscheduled c-section and was very nervous about it. It read this book 5 months later and feel much better about the experience. Highly recommended!!
Helpful info for the 1st time C-Section mom.......2006-08-01
There were a lot of questions that I had once I found out that my son was breech and that I would have to have a c-section. This book was full of info and helped explain the entire process. The only thing it lacked was a bit more on the recovery side. I had a few questions about pain and a stitch that opened ...I had to call my Dr for some answers.
Good for emotional and physical recovery.......2005-09-10
This book was very helpful to me when it came to emotional and physical recovery from a C-section. Most books are little short on the end of emotional recovery. This book is not home birth friendly though.

What a Great Find!.......2006-10-21
This book is terrific. It is a ten week program that helps one to *slowly* learn 40 new habits (4 a week) that are simple yet very helpful in many ways. For example, in week one, you start to drink 8 glasses of water a day (important to do, healthy), go for a 20 minute walk a day (it's important to be active, and this is a way to start), clean out one drawer, cabinet or closet a week (easy enough when it's only one a week, and having an organized home is a great thing), and save at least $2 or 1% of your daily income, whatever is greater (you decide later what to do with the savings).
These are easy to do, and if you do them regularly, they become a part of your life. There are tips you can skip (if you already walk every day, you pass that chapter) but overall, there are 40 great habits that are an asset to have as a part of your life.
The best thing about this book is that it doesn't just tell you to take on these habits. Each chapter tells you *why* this habit is important, what the benefits are, how to attain this habit, and how to easily make it a part of your life and be motivated to continue with it for good. It has many reasonable tips, great advice, and some success stories thrown in for good measure.
I am not done with the program yet, but I already see the benefits (I am more relaxed, have more free time, am more organized) so I woul definately recommend this book!
What you get out of it probably depends on where you are.......2005-06-07
I didn't finish this book. I got as far as the week where they tell me to start incorporating yoga every day and just couldn't deal with it anymore. I have a full-time job, a 3-year-old, a husband, and a house to maintain. If I had time to do 30 minutes of yoga daily (in addition to the 20 minute walk from week 1), shop weekly for fresh flowers, and sip my 8 glasses of ice water from a fine crystal wine-glass - I wouldn't need advice books.
This book is geared to a certain type of woman. One wealthy enough that she has never lived without an in-home washer and dryer (there is a step about organizing when to do your laundry). One whose children are at least out of diapers (or safely set up with the nanny). One who, if she works outside the home at all, has the sort of job where she controls her own schedule and has her own desk. Preferably her own office.
Some of the steps aren't stupid, really. And some of the annoyances are specific to me. I get so sick of advice books that tell me to save money by forgoing lattes and manicures - I've had 3 lattes in the past year and my last (and only) manicure was sometime in the early 90's.
Overall, these didn't seem to be the right steps for me.
What your Momma didn't teach you?.......2004-09-17
This is a progressive program that's designed to teach you very simple steps to reorganize your life, your health, and your surroundings. It's fairly easy to follow, with four new assignments each week for you to continue practicing the rest of your life. Some of the assignments are very simple and basic (like brushing your teeth and flossing every day), others are more complex (like learning about good and bad fats and making the necessary changes). By the end of the ten weeks, you'll have acquired 40 habits that will help you feel better and get rid of chaos in your life. Many of the steps should already be part of a normal adult's life, and organized people will scoff at their self-evidence! But for those of us who are always running late, whose house is in a perpetual mess, who can't find anything, and who are always tired, I guarantee that you'll already see improvement by the second week! The only problem for me was to remember all the steps, but the author gives many suggestions on how to incorporate the steps in daily life. I highly recommend this book, becaude even if you don't practice all the steps, the ones you do will make a huge difference in your life!
I don't usually like or read self-help books, but..........2003-09-13
...this book was different. First of all, written by three "regular" women instead of doctors or professionals gives this book a fresh perspective that is sometimes missing from most books of it's kind. I liked the fact that it talks about simple, everyday things that everyone can do, but few take the time to do them. It sort of brings to your attention small details that can make a big difference in your life. For instance, in the first chapter, one of the simples steps is drinking water. The book explains why this is effective and how to easily incorporate this step into your life. The whole book is outlined with small, unscary steps, that can easily be carried out successfully by anyone. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to make major changes without major disruptions in daily life.
Help for those who need hand holding !.......2003-06-22
The book Simple Steps is a guidebook for the woman whose life according to the book is "a cluttered mess of worries, wishes and chores that you can't keep track of."
The authors tell you to do one thing each week for your health, your weight, your home and your spirit. If you add these steps each week, in ten weeks you will be in greater control and according to the authors "cultivating the life you always wanted."
Week 1 for example suggests you drink eight glasses of water every day for your diet, walk twenty minutes a day for fitness, clean out a drawer or cabinet every week for your home, and save $2 a day for self.
Other weeks include tips such as keeping a food journal, cleaning out your fridge, taking a multivitamin, cleaning and flossing your teeth (yes you read that right) and cutting back on caffeine.
The authors tell you why you should do these things and how to "attach them to your lifestyle".
You already know you should be doing everything in this book.
You already know the techniques in this book.
On the back cover the authors say they will empower you by helping you attain the body you want with simple tricks like avoiding the kitchen after hours and using herbs and spices. (You knew that already). They say you can make room for fitness by using new techniques like kitchen dancing. (Is this new to you?)
There really is nothing new here. But sometimes we are so overwhelmed, we don't do the things we should. So the authors have written a book to get you to add these basic skills to your life one week at a time so they become lifelong habits. They walk you through each good habit step by step and hold your hand so you can accomplish your goals.
The choice then is do you need the book to tell you what you should already be doing? Or could you just make a list of habits that you know are good for you and then add one or two habits each week?
A lot depends on the type of person you are. If you feel like you want some support and are so flustered with your life you don't know where to get started buy the book. If not just make a list of things you want to accomplish and do a little bit each week.

Needs to be updated!.......2007-06-10
While I liked McCullough's encouraging tone and some of her ideas, this book needs to be revised for modern times. Written 27 years ago, some examples like the to do item "type ditto" and how a friend saved worktime by getting an extra-long cord on her phone are so outdated that they provided a few unintended laughs. A better purchase might be the Messie books by Sandra Felton, or for household management, the Flylady book.
Dated, But Some Good Information.......2006-11-17
This book was just okay. There was some good information but not very much that was new or not available from other sources. I love household and organization books, so I enjoyed it, but many readers might be looking for something more current.
Too old fashioned.......2006-08-15
This book had some good ideas if it were 1970. It's very outdated. I'm sure it was a good book when it was still current, but in 2006, it's just a a waste of time and money.
simply life-changing.......2003-10-22
I bought this book at a homeschool conference about 15 years ago. It literally changed my life. I have fond memories of sitting down at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee and my "Bonnie" book. Bonnie became like a friend, offering great advice and encouragement. Her writing style is warm and uplifting. She made me want to succeed at organizing my home. I learned how to organize my kitchen cabinets, and ever since my mom has recommended ME to organize the kitchen when someone in the family moves! And I was the family "messy!" Her suggestion on implementing Minimum Maintenance made the difference for me in keeping my house clean and presentable. I highly recommend this book for anyone who struggles as I did with managing all the STUFF/CHORES in her home.
Wonderfully Helpful for the Disorganised Homemaker.......2003-06-06
I just loved this book. I would give it ten stars if I could. It was so full of down to earth and helpful advice and very entertaining to read. There were hints on clutter clearing and how to tackle a home that has got a bit out of control. Lists of daily jobs and what Bonnie calls minimum maintenance were a great help. If you find it hard to keep on top of the house and it seems forever in a cluttered mess (like mine) this is the book for you.
