I got this book and it definetly is like a refference guide, it does not go into depth and just reccomends the obvius, or describes what dif. vitamins are for, I bought at the same time TAKING CHARGE OF YOUR FERTILITY and it did give me a lot of information I did not know about our cycles, and now I am more knowledgable of as the name states: I FEEL IN CHARGE!!! and know what is going on in my body on a daily basis, a GREAT BOOK! GET IT!

5 out of 5 stars Helped Us Get Pregnant! .......2006-01-13

I'm 39- my husbands 43 - and we had all but given up hope on getting pregnant. We were about to start seeing a fertilty expert, when a woman in my office told me about this book. She was my age, followed the plans and conceived within 7 months. I decided to give it a try! I used the nutrition advice, diet advice, and made some of the lifestyle changes, as well as changing some habits that I was surprised to learn could affect my fertility. Just as I was about to give up hope - I FOUND OUT I"M PREGNANT! Yay! It took about 8 months - but we did it on our own, without any fertilty experts. This book is well worth the price - and it's worth giving it a try before you sign off for the expensive IVF or other treatments. I read some of the other reviews before buying and they almost convinced me not to - but my friend was so sure it would help me, ( she had given her copy to her sister-in-law!) I decided to buy it anyway. I'm so glad I did! It wasn't scary - but it was realistic and made me see how important small changes can be! Buy it! It might work for you too! Good LUCK!

Don't waste your money! It states the obvious. Hey, if you want to get pregnant, don't drink, smoke or do drugs. Nothing else about this book useful...

1 out of 5 stars This book is not for the average couple..........2005-12-26

Aleksandra is obviously involved in the publication of this book somehow. Why this moron feels the defensive need to attack other reviewers is beyond me, and downright pathetic. Why do you have to call other people uneducated? Isn't the average reader allowed to post their opinions? You're a desperate loser and a pathetic excuse for a fellow human.

My wife and I bought this book last year hoping it would give us some basic answers to some very basic questions. I agree that the fertilization of a hamster egg is of little consequence to the average couple. We found our money was better spent on "Taking Control of Your Fertility." It offered us very basic information. We were pregnant the following month. Spend your money there. Don't listen to the agenda-pushing moron below!

3 out of 5 stars Nothing Spectacular.......2005-01-19

I bought this small guide thinking it would clarify exactly what I should be keeping in mind nutrition-wise being 3 months pregnant ( I had found What to Expect's nutrition section somewhat hard to follow). This very short book had a LOT of repetition and, in some instances, displayed a poor editing job (under the heading of Peanut Allergies you will find the suggestion that you should really eliminate fish, eggs and cows milk from your diet to avoid exposing your baby to some common allergens--whether during pregnancy or while breastfeeding is unclear, while a chapter ago the book strongly advocated 12 ounces of fish per week). All in all, this book did have good information and good looking recipes (hence the three stars) but could have been much better, and I did not find that the quality justified an $8 price tag.

5 out of 5 stars What I wish I knew before I got pregnant........2004-06-26

My son was born prematurely June 10, 2004. My 30 week ultrasound came back showing that my ambionic fluid was low and my baby only weighed 2 lbs. 7 ounces. The next day I was sent by my OB/GYN to meet with a perinatologist. Within 15 minutes of meeting the specialist, I was told my baby would be born witihin 24 to 48 hours and was admitted to the hospital 30 minutes later. My son was born via emergency csection 27 hours later. I was 31 weeks into my pregancy. He will spend 9 weeks in neonatal ICU before he can come home. This so far, has been the hardest and most heartbreaking part of my entire pregnancy.

I am 30 years old and was diagnosed with chronic high blood pressure two years ago. This book is a step by step account of what happened to me. I developed pregnancy induced hypertension which turned into preeclampsia. None of my doctors (family practicioner or OB/GYN) told me how dangerous and high risk my pregnancy would be. I wish I knew then what this book has taught me now, it has been a real eyeopener and lifesaver.

5 out of 5 stars essential for (expecting) preemie-parents.......2001-11-21

Upon hearing you're pregnant, most people will only have images of perfect babies. When hearing something is going wrong with your pregnancy, most people have no idea what to expect.
When I heared I was going to have my baby within half an hour, at 26 weeks of pregnancy... I had no idea what was laying ahead of me.
This book prepares you on what to expect when you have a high-risk pregnancy and takes you trough the 24 hours after delivery, your preemies growth and maturation, the neonatal unit, bringing your baby home and later-life development. There is also a part on babies with special needs and a part about when things go wrong.
From the many lonely hours I could not be with my baby, I spent many reading this book. The stories of other parents helped me survivng the nicu and the many charts and statistics helped me to get an image on what to expect.

Thank you very much for this book.

5 out of 5 stars The book for a high risk pregnancy and the NICU.......2001-07-18

A very helpful book for reading during your high-risk pregnancy and when your baby is in the NICU. I did think that the anecdotes about women's experiences with terbutaline and magnesium sulfate were unnecessarily alarming. This book complemented Linden's Essential Guide for Parnets of Premature Babies nicely.

5 out of 5 stars Helpful beyond words.......2001-04-30

This is THE book I wished I'd known about in advance when we developed problems later in my pregnancy. I actually think anyone expecting a baby where there is a possibility of it becoming a high-risk pregnancy (and face it, that could be any of us, right?) should read this book so that you can be prepared to be the best possible advocate for yourself and your child in the NICU and during the transition out. It will also help you understand the complexities of what goes on in the NICU so you can work well with the staff caring for your infant.

5 out of 5 stars Essential reading.......2000-11-21

This book has been a God-send. Its clear, comprehensive text, helpful illustrations, and authoritative advice (the lead author is a top Houston neonatologist) is just what my husband and I needed when we found out our baby was going to be born prematurely.

We especially liked all of the stories and testimony from parents, people who have experienced the fear and uncertainty of high-risk pregnancy. Their stories are incredibly reassuring. We needed to know we weren't alone.

This book is a must-have for any parent whose pregnancy is not going as planned.

5 out of 5 stars Nice book for four to eight year olds.......2007-10-10

This is a well explained chidrens book about getting another baby in the family and preparing a child for that. If you bottle feed though, you'll have to skip two pages or skip the book.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for sibs.......2007-10-10

We bought this book for our two year old boy when I was a few weeks away from expecting our second baby. We started reading it to him then and have continued to do so through his sister's first year. I love that the text and pictures portray our parenting style and have taught him about how we take care of babies. I've bought this book for my friend who is expecting her second.

5 out of 5 stars My toddler loves it!.......2007-06-27

I got this book (among others) to introduce our 2 1/2 year old to the concept of babies, and what they might need. He's reading it with interest, and I'm glad it was recommended to me. I like that it promotes attachment parenting, nursing, etc. while making it clear that there's always room for more love in a family.

5 out of 5 stars Especially great for AP parents.......2007-05-14

We're expecting #2 & bought this book recently for our 2 y/o. She loves it! The text is very easy to adapt to our family -- we make it personal to our daughter whenever we read it. The tips for parents at the beginning are a great feature that I haven't seen in other books like this, and there are lots of little extras throughout the story for inquisitive kiddos. It is pro-attachment & pro-breastfeeding which is awesome for our family. This book & it's companion "Baby on the Way" are really getting our daughter excited about her little brother or sister -- she even suggests ways she can help with the baby! Our family feels so much more prepared!

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2007-04-21

This book was just what I was looking for -- something to help prepare my 2-year-old for her coming sibling, how the family will change, how mommy will feed the baby (breastfeeding), and how the older sibling can help out. Easy text. Nice pictures.

Book Description

This paperback edition of The Coming Generational Storm has been revised and updated and includes a new foreword by the authors.

In 2030, as 77 million baby boomers hobble into old age, walkers will outnumber strollers; there will be twice as many retirees as there are today but only 18 percent more workers. How will Social Security and Medicare function with fewer working taxpayers to support these programs? According to Laurence Kotlikoff and Scott Burns, if our government continues on the course it has set, we'll see skyrocketing tax rates, drastically lower retirement and health benefits, high inflation, a rapidly depreciating dollar, unemployment, and political instability. The government has lost its compass, say Kotlikoff and Burns, and the Bush administration's spending and tax policies have charted a course straight into the coming generational storm.

Kotlikoff and Burns take us on a guided tour of our generational imbalance: There's the "fiscal child abuse" that will double the taxes paid by the next generation. There's also the "deficit delusion" of the under-reported national debt. And none of this, they say, will be solved by any of the popularly touted remedies: cutting taxes, technological progress, immigration, foreign investment, or the elimination of wasteful government spending. Kotlikoff and Burns propose bold new policies, including meaningful reforms of Social Security and Medicare, that are simple, straightforward, and geared to attract support from both political parties.

4 out of 5 stars Essential Reading - Save Early and Save Often.......2007-08-08

This book should be required reading for all high-school sophomores who are going to inherit the economic problems the authors lay out in the prologue. The more awareness my generation (x) and the younger generations get about the mounting economic conditions we will face within the next 25 years, the better prepared we will all be to fix, or at least adjust to them.

At times the book is a bit too academic and for that I give it only 4 stars but there are parts that you can skip and still not miss the authors' explanation of why we are doomed and what - possibly - we can do to mitigate the situation. Robert Shiller summarizes the points that the authors make below:

"There's a lot of frivolous criticism of our politicians, but this book hits the mark, convincingly documenting their biggest sin: the failure to account for the magnitude of a huge government deficit crisis. The accounting scandals of Enron, WorldCom, and Parmalat pale by comparison. Read this book so you can start preparing for much higher taxes in the future for you and your children."
--Robert J. Shiller, Yale University, author of Irrational Exuberance and The New Financial Order

Perhaps the worst part of all of this is that we CAN fix the debt obligations that are hanging over us but doing so would require massive sacrifices on behalf of all citizens (unlikely since so many of us "expect" the government to play a role in financing our retirement and healthcare) as well as for both sides of the political aisle to work together (even more unlikely in these partisan times when all the Dems and Republicans want to do is blame one another). Failure to grasp the gravity of a $54 Trillion debt obligation and its impact on the quality of our lives will only continue to erode the value of the dollar as more developing nations such as China, India and Brazil increase their ownership of the US by buying up Treasuries that the government continues to issue. Not good, especially when so many of our middle class jobs are being lost to these countries at the same time.

This is perhaps the most important issue of our time. Until voters are heard and a real politician runs on a platform to fix the escalating economic crisis that awaits us all, do what you can to prepare yourself; save as much as possible in both tax deferred and taxed accounts (the latter of which will benefit you in the future since you will likely be in a lower tax rate today than you will 20 years from now when the govt. has no choice but to raise personal income taxes to finance the debt). Also, go to the gao.gov website and click on "Fiscal Wake Up Tour" in the left hand gutter, then click on the CBS New Program 60 Minutes hyperlink. If you dont have the time to read this book, at least read this article and watch the video interview with the head of the GAO office. By that time, the message and its implications should be painfully clear to you.

3 out of 5 stars Informative, but speculative.......2007-01-10

Kotlikoff and Burns rightly portray congress, the president, judges, the AARP, and anyone else who favors increases, or even the status quo, of social security, Medicare, and Medicaid policies as truly irresponsible. The fact that these three entitlement programs will bankrupt the country within 50 years has been known for at least 10 years (when I started to pay attention to politics). Every year, reforms are spoken about, even good ones that would for the most part protect the programs. But every year, the situation becomes worse because nothing is done. And Bush II foolishly expanded Medicare.

On the flip side, economic predictions decades into the future seems fairly irresponsible as well. As is pointed out in this book, other countries are in far worse condition than the US for the same stupidly financed entitlement packages. They will go belly up first. While the US will certainly feel their pain as well since their economies are intimately tied to ours, we will learn from their mistakes and fix our own problems.

All my life, I've been listening that one disaster after another is going to crush us. In grade school, I learned that we would run out of food in the mid 80's through the 90's and billions would starve to death. Didn't happen. Humans now consume more calories on average throughout the whole world than ever before. Then in grade school and middle school I learned that we would run out of energy. Despite the blip of the last year, oil prices have steadily been dropping and they will continue to drop. We will never run out of oil or energy. Destruction of the ozone layer. It's still there. The depletion of our forests. The US today has more forest cover than 80 years ago. Foreign holdings of the US debt. Nuclear war.

And on and on, disaster after disaster that never materialized. Not because the harping drew attention to the problem, but because in the stating of every single problem, the assumption was that nothing would change. That the human response would not adapt as new information and incentives came about. Not a smart assumption.

We will solve the entitlement problem, but, yes indeed, we will have to feel the pain first. And so what? We'll still solve the problem. The sun will rise in the east and set in the west and the US will be around for a long time and in a dominant position, social security, Medicare, and Medicaid not withstanding. The US and the world will continue to become a better place, but in fits and starts.

I've always been an optimist. I really do believe in the power of imagination and human ingenuity.

4 out of 5 stars Generational Fear Should be Great.......2007-01-09

This book gives a great review of the issues facing America in this century due to government give aways. After reading it I found that several current news stories seemed to be confirming the predictions in the book. The numbers are 3 years old, but the suggestions for saving Social Security and Medicare still seem to be valid. I was a little disappointed in the funds listed in the book, but I have received updated listings by visiting the Scott Burns web site.

4 out of 5 stars A Sobering Assessment.......2006-12-05

Per Kotlkoff and Burns (who base their findings on Government projections), the present value of unfunded future liabilities for Social Security and Medicare is $45 trillion (some nine times the size of our "National debt"). The reasons: longer human life spans due to advances in medical science, retirement of the baby boomers, and the disconnect between the consumption of medical services and the responsibility for paying for them.

Drastic action would be required to close the gap now, e.g., (a) increase federal income taxes by 69%, (b) increase payroll taxes by 95%, or (c) cut Social Security and Medicare benefits by 45%. We could make even more drastic adjustments in a few years. Or, we could do nothing and let the U.S. economy go into a meltdown with double-digit inflation fueled by the Government printing money.

Our political leaders are trying to ignore the problem, and, as Kotlikoff and Burns explain, the fault is ours. "The last thing we want is Uncle Sam telling us to save now for a tidal wave of obligations when the baby boomers retire. So we make sure that doesn't happen. We hire [elect?] politicians who tell us what we want to hear."

The authors go on to present a plan for reform, but they don't expect their plan (or other reforms that could save the system) to be enacted. They end with advice as to how workers should attempt to look after themselves and their families if the politicians in Washington "miss this opportunity to save our ship of state."

One thing bothers me about the analysis. Accepting that the fiscal gap is every bit as bad as it is depicted, this problem was created by Government action. Why should we attempt to solve it by giving the Government even greater responsibilities, such as running the world's largest index fund, assessing the health risks of every senior in the country, deciding how much society needs to spend for health care, etc.? It might be more logical under the circumstances to move in the direction of less Government and let people make choices (such as how long should I work, what medical care do I and others in my family need, etc.) for themselves.

Even if the authors don't have all the answers, however, they have diagnosed the problem very well. "The Coming Generational Storm" is entertainingly written and refreshingly nonpartisan (lambasting both Republicans and Democrats with vigor). Don't miss it.

4 out of 5 stars A retort to the complaints about this book.......2006-11-27

The negative reviews of this book tend to note the following: we cannot predict the future and, yet, this book purports to predict what will happen in the future.

On the one hand, this is a valid criticism - it IS true that we cannot predict how things might change over the next few decades. If some changes occur, they may invalidate the predictions of this book. In fact, I would wager that this book ends up being wrong on a number of fronts.

However, one response to this criticism is that the best information that we have about the future is based on current trends. Absent information about unknown innovations, how could we do any better? Using information about current trends is exactly what this book does. Any alternative future is necessarily based on more tenuous predictions.

Moreover, the authors are very, very careful (and I cannot emphasize how careful they are) about the caveats associated with their predictions - they consistently note that no one can predict the future with certainty and that their predictions are based on the best available information.

They then go even further. They consider scenarios that may invalid their predictions such as technological change (i.e. productivity increases) and carefully argue that those changes would be implausible or, at the very least, insufficient to alter the basic gist of their message.

In the end, the authors try a great deal to innoculate themselves against the criticism regarding the uncertain future. They will almost certainly not be correct, and they concede this point throughout. But their predictions are based on more careful analysis than the knee-jerk response that "we cannot predict the future" which ends up being a vacuous criticism since it is not refutable.

What annoys me about this whole issue is that it is quite clear that we are facing a future crisis even if these guys are wrong about the details. And yet our politicians do not have the guts to face up to it. I think that we need a blue ribbon, non-partisan panel that includes serious people like Kotlikoff (who is a serious, well-regarded economist) to consider the issues and make recommendations. Most politicians either do not understand the issues or do not have the chutzpah to confront them. Something has to be done, and even if this book ends up being wrong, at least it's a call to action.

4 out of 5 stars Great guide, but needs further revision........2007-01-29

Out of all the pregnancy books that I own, this is by far my favorite. The layout is easy to read, which a logical, and for the most part, sequential way to present information. I would have rather the book be further divided into two sections, one of the month-by-month stuff, the other into interesting reference items that do not need to be in any kind of order. I felt that the were some things on month seven that I wish had been there earlier, and such things as multiple births (which did not apply to me) could have been elsewhere. But overall, a very useful guide.

4 out of 5 stars An easy, smart read!.......2005-08-12

I have to say that this book is great for the first time mom or a mom with lots of experience. It is broken up by month, so you can see "in print" what you are going through and how to deal with it. I have purchased another book on breastfeeding, just as a "refresher course" but this book does touch on it briefly. I have a few pregnancy books, but this one is by far my favorite read.

2 out of 5 stars Great, if you want to be more scared than you already are.......2005-01-25

I would NOT recommend this book to anyone who is pregnant for the first time. When you're in a state where you feel a confusing bunch of things and are hungry for information, you need to read materials that will comfort and empower you, NOT books as alarmist and cold as this one. In the first 20 pages alone, there were at least five separate paragraphs of all the horrible things that could happen if you do or don't do one thing or another. When you're in those first stages of pregnancy, when you're nervous enough as it is, you don't need a book to freak you out any more than you already are. Yes, you have to be careful, and knowing what is good and bad for you is important. But there are ways to convey that message (with warmth, humor, or a sense of comfort), and this book doesn't do any of those things.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Book!.......2003-09-26

This book is amazing! It is easy to read and you don't have to be a doctor to understand it. Instead of having to go to 1,000 different places to get the information I needed, I found it all in one place - month after month. It is great. It has been very helpful to me. I highly recommend it!!

5 out of 5 stars Smart, Friendly -- Kind of Book You Want During Pregnancy!.......2003-09-10

Great book. It's written in a friendly, easy-to-read style, but is packed with the kind of practical, reassuring, and helpful information a pregnant woman craves.

I thought I'd read all there was to read in the various pregnancy books, but this latest edition with writer Paula Ford-Martin has a wealth of new information, and there are many informative tidbits throughout that add to its usefulness.

I really found the month by month format particularly helpful and easy to follow.

I highly recommend this book, good gift for a newly pregnant friend or family member. (There's also some great info for the father-to-be!)

Book Description

Fathers and Babies is the one and only baby care book written expressly for fathers.

Fathers and Babies is a light and reassuring introduction into the world of fatherhood. Fathers today want to be, and are expected to be, involved parents who bond with their children and help them thrive. Yet, sadly, many new fathers feel excluded from the loop of child care.

Because most fathers don't get to spend as much time with their babies as mothers do, men don't learn the everyday skills of baby care. When they attempt to help out during evenings and on weekends, they frustrate themselves and those they are trying to help. Instead of becoming closer to their children, many fathers withdraw, conceding the domain of parenting to mothers. This is unfair to mothers, fathers, and their children.

What fathers desperately need is a special baby care training manual that will teach them how to fix a bottle, soothe a bay in the middle of the night, and help a child learn to talk. Fathers who are primary caregivers gain these skills easily. But most fathers are not primary caregivers; and because they can't spend more time with their children, they need help in order to become the great fathers they want to be.

Fathers and Babies provides step-by-step instructions accompanied by humorous, real-life pictures that show fathers what to do. The book also explains the important perceptual abilities, language skills, muscular coordination, strength, and concepts of trust and self-esteem that babies need to develop during the first eighteen months of life. The more fathers know about these critical developments, the more fathers will be able to help their babies achieve and the more worthy they will feel as parents.

5 out of 5 stars Good Baby Shower Gift.......2005-08-13

I give this book as part of my baby shower gift to new parents. It gives new dads ideas how to interact with their new babies. I have gotten fun comments from new dads. "I am glad someone knows there is a father involved with this baby. Thanks." " This is a excellent bathroom book," said my nephews.I also include in my gift What to Expect the First Year and What to Expect the Toddler Years.

5 out of 5 stars JUST RIGHT.......2002-11-26

I bought this for my 22 year old son, who is about to become a father for the first time. He of course is interested in finding out about newborns but admittedly does not have the desire to go too indepth. This book was perfect for him. He could read each section as it pertained to the baby at the correct time thus preparing him for whats expected. The mother on the other hand . . . needed something much more in depth in her search for finding out about her newborn. Perfect for first time dads who don't want to know too much, at least the brevity of the book will keep their attention long enough to learn the basics.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to digest.......2001-01-30

I loved this book. It was sweet, entertaining, and non-threatening; definitely not written for women, as is typical. As a man minimally exposed to babies my entire life, I found it eye-opening and helpful in setting my expectations for life with an infant.

3 out of 5 stars wasn't what I expected.......2000-09-26

Half of the space in this book is devoted to unnecessarily large drawings (illustrations). The text is VERY simplistic, e.g., it's a good idea to be extra nice to your partner during this period and help out. BOTTOM LINE: This might be a very valuable book for many people, especially as either an introduction or a summary. For more details on babies, check out THE NEW FATHER (Brott).

5 out of 5 stars Very accessible book for Dads -- but Moms will like it too.......2000-03-15

My husband received several books on being a dad (or a supportive "pregnant" husband) but they were all pretty intense books. This one is different. It's casual, informative, simple, accessible. It does a great job describing babies' developmental stages, how important Daddy is at that time, and some neat games or activities you can use to interact. It's really a valuable book for any parent, but I thought it was an especially nice book for its target audience, a busy new Dad.

Book Description

It should be a time of joyous anticipation–the happiest time in a woman’s life. But for many women, the joys of pregnancy are clouded by feelings of fear, sadness, and confusion. And unlike postpartum depression, which is widely portrayed in the media and embraced by the medical community, depression during pregnancy has been rarely discussed and often misunderstood–until now. In this groundbreaking book–the first to focus exclusively on depression in pregnancy–Dr. Shaila Kulkarni Misri, a leading reproductive psychiatrist, draws on her twenty-five years of clinical practice and research to offer hope, help, and healing–as well as a provocative, myth-shattering examination of a subject that has too long been shrouded in darkness.

The numbers are surprising: up to 70 percent of pregnant women experience some degree of depressive symptoms, and of those, 12 percent meet the diagnostic criteria for major depression. Although it is at least as common as postpartum depression, which occurs after a child’s birth, pregnancy-related depression is often cloaked in silence, shame, and denial. Pregnancy Blues lifts the veil on this heartbreaking–and very treatable–
illness, examining the key social and biological factors that can come together during pregnancy to create a climate in which depression and anxiety thrive, as well as offering the many effective treatments that are available. Discover:

• How to recognize the signs and symptoms of depression–and know when to seek help
• The role of female hormones: why women are more vulnerable to depression than men
• How depression can “hide” behind physical complaints, such as back, stomach, or even chest pain
• The unspoken connection between infertility and depression
• The antidepressant controversy: the facts on specific drugs, their safety–and when medication is the right choice
• Breastfeeding and medication–the risks and benefits

Plus helpful self-tests and resources, information on alternative treatment options–from therapy to acupuncture–and much more. A work of daring and compassion, Pregnancy Blues challenges the underlying traditions and beliefs surrounding pregnancy and motherhood–and explores how those misconceptions have led to the drastic underdiagnosis and undertreatment of depression during pregnancy. A must-read for women and those who love them, Pregnancy Blues is at once an extraordinary roadmap to healing and an eye-opening report on a medical issue that no woman can afford to miss.

3 out of 5 stars never got through it.......2007-05-08

My friend recommended this to me, and I began reading it about mid-way through my pregnancy. Instead of being informative, I found it very depressing! I decided to stop reading it and looked for more positive ways to address my depression, like exercise and visiting with friends. For those who enjoy lots of information and statistics, you may appreciate this book. I, however, did not find it useful.

5 out of 5 stars Informative And Beneficial.......2006-10-29

Dr. Misri has done an excellent job of educating women and men about depression in women in general, depression during pregnancy, and depression after pregnancy. She clearly shatters the myth that pregnancy is a time of joy for all women by offering stories from her clinical practices, research, and lectures. She offers the pregnant woman and couple at large a thorough education about the risks and benefits of continuing or even starting treatment during and after pregnancy. She also made sure to stress that depression doesn't discriminate and even affected a social worker who used to remove infants from parents, a well known OB/GYN, and a Therpaist! Any one can experience it, there is nothing to be ashamed of, but the good news is that she explains your many options along with your many possibilities. And finally Dr. Misri does indeed value her patients and all women as she states that she finds hope and encouragement in her patients, and respect them seeing them as courageous people trying to manage an emotional illness in addition to other challenges of pregnancy and parenthood.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Essential Reference Plus enjoyable read.......2006-06-22

I love this book. There are others that have gotten awards for pregnancy and depression and I don't know why. This is the A#1 book. It is written from a multi-cultural perspective. It is not fear based but filled with great information. I have not read any other book by anyone with as much experience as this author. She sees over 3,000 women a year in her Canadian based pregnancy depression clinic. She has so many resources to share. She treats depression as a regular normal health condition. She does not act like all medicine is bad. She does not make you feel evil for selecting to take care of yourself. She is just lovely. This book has a fantastic balance of clinical information - in easy to understand language and cultural nuances of birth and pregnancy. It really takes in the whole person. I love this book. I wish I would have had it before I got pregnant or I would have had an easier pregnancy. I can't recommend this book highly enough.

I found this book to contain some useful information. However I was able to find the same info just by doing some quick research on the net.
What really annoyed me is that the author kept repeating the same points over and over and over again. If you would take that book and eliminate the repeted paragraphs it would shrink to being half its size.
