Customer Reviews:
excellent book.......2007-10-11
This was a good deal and I saved $30. it was new and exactly as described. thanks.
Health Behavior & Health Education, a good buy.......2007-09-30
Good book for a class on Health Behavior and Health Education Theories. Good for graduate level work. Theories broken into chapters. Each chapter has the theory history, significant time line for the theory, chart and descriptions of the constructs, and examples where research has used the theory effectively. Examples in book make use of the theory more understandable.
Excellent Reference Book.......2007-08-27
I purchased this book to use as a reference for a Graduate Project on Health Promotion. I was particularly interested in Planning Models so most of my research focused on Part 5 in the book
Excellent Book-I highly recommend it
Judy W.
very useful book.......2007-02-11
This book is very useful to anyone involved in the public health field for research or developing interventions to address any health behavior with any group. I'm glad I purchased it. I highly recommend it as a valuable resource.
Not a very appealing text.......2006-04-19
Chapters are disjoint at times, with no reference to similar concepts between them. Almost as if they were all written separately without any editing to tie them all together.
Information is presented in something less than an interesting manner - it's pretty dry!

Book Description
A handy reference for health promotion frameworks, strategies and tools, this classic book focuses on national health promotion priorities identified in Healthy People 2010 - with special emphasis on culturally and racially diverse populations.
The new edition of this text will expand upon the vision of the two new co-authors incorporated in the last edition. It will continue to be theory based but will include more application of health promotion. New information will be integrated on health promotion in the learning disabled and the use of herbal medicine as it relates to health promotion. There will be new case studies and reflective practice activities to apply student's knowledge.
For nursing students as well as nurse practitioners, community health nurses, occupational health nurses, and school nurses.

Book Description
"Chapter overviews, subheadings, and summaries facilitate a quick reading and review for graduate students and busy professionals in public health, the social sciences, communication, and related health policy-making fields."
--Academic Library Book Review
How do you design an effective health campaign message?
Designing Health Messages explores this question from both theoretical and practical perspectives. The authors, all well-known for cutting-edge research in their field, demonstrate the necessity of basing message design decisions on appropriate theories of human behavior and communication effectiveness by synthesizing and integrating knowledge and insights from communication and health behavior change. Part I covers theory-driven approaches and includes content and linguistic considerations, the role of fear in content, and using positive affect. Part II discusses audience-centered strategies and looks at the "America Responds to AIDS" campaign and the Cancer Communication's "5 a Day for Better Health" program. This comprehensive volume concludes with recent developments and policy and administrative practices for health message design.
A much-needed book,
Designing Health Messages is an indispensable resource and an essential aid for professors, students, and professionals in communication, specifically mass communication, and public health.
"This book would make a strong addition to a graduate-level course on health communication. With complementary reading to broaden students'' knowledge of the core theories and empirical research applied by these authors to message design, this book would enhance students'' capacity to link health communication theory and practice."
--Health Policy and Planning
Customer Reviews:
book quality.......2005-09-23
The book arrived about as timely as I would predict as far as snail mail goes. The quality of the book was poor. When I first opened it, I guess the binding glue was old and crusty because about pages 62-73 fell out.
Great book........2002-07-17
Nice collection of pieces on how health campaigns can succeed and fail. I refer to it often.
good integration of theory into practice.......1999-04-03
I've read this book quickly and now plan to use it intensely for my grad studies and my work in public health. Excellent practical advice for those of us on the front line who need to influence health behaviors of individuals and groups. Practical advice which is soundly based on theory - adding to the validity of the authors' recommendations.

Customer Reviews:
Should be required for anyone in a perinatal program.......2004-04-30
This is a book that covers just a little bit of everything in perinatal education. It has non-biased information, solid references, and an easy-to-read format.
This book cannot be read in one sitting because it is a typical (rather dry) academic textbook. But it is a book that you will refer to again and again.
Very mainstream but worthwhile.......2000-06-23
While I am not a "mainstream " childbirth educator, there are many aspects of this book that I have found myself referring back to during my teaching career. It was very helpful in learning about the adult learner and thier particular physical, emotional , sociocultural and cognitive needs. The chapter on the "the basis of relaxation" was very interesting as it helped me understand the history of using relaxation in childbirth and the different philosphies behind each technique. Biofeedback, therapeutic touch and acupressure were presented in an extremely informative manner. The basics of the childbirth education business arepresented( something that can be overlooked in most teachers passion for their "Cause"). A very mainstreamm textbook that can be of great value to both hospital and independent educators alike.

Still Waiting.......2005-09-26
I have still not received this book, even though I have purchased it about 5 weeks ago. So, the company that this book is coming from is not very reliable. As for the book itself, I really can't review it, since I don't have it.

Had to buy this for school.......2007-01-11
The text is dry and although it seems to have good information it presents like any text book and is not enjoyable to read in any way. For the class I had to buy it for we didn't even use the information for testing, so it was a waste for me but a common scenario when teachers insist on students buying expensive texts and then do not use them in their curriculum- so see if you really need it or share with a friend.
