Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Required Reading.......2006-08-09
Great guidebook for anyone interested in "LIVING." Informative, entertaining, and motivating all in one read. Probably should be required reading for incoming freshman at University. Would have a more lasting impact and retention than most books found on traditional "required reading" lists.

A wise, sensible book on healthy aging.......2006-06-10
A smart, common sense alternative to all the junk science books out there on how to stay young forever. Deals with all the components which go into healthy aging from finances to fitness to staying active and finding fulfillment. No magic pills or secret fountains of youth, just practical, entertaining advice. A fun, informative read. As a a legal aid hotline attorney and owner a retail medical supply and equipment business, I feel this book would be very useful for my clients and customers.
Informative and Entertaining.......2006-05-31
I really enjoyed reading "Age Smart". It was not only full of useful and practical information but also very fun to read. The authors did a great job keeping the book light-hearted while providing solid information we can all use. I am someone who is in my late-thirties so the book spoke to me on many different levels. I understand now the importance of not only keeping my body in good shape, but that my financial and mental well-being is just as important. I recommend this book to everyone. I learned so much from reading it.
A superbly written book.......2006-05-26
I really enjoyed the book - it was very well written and I liked the balanced approach to aging. My favorite parts were the interviews because aging means so many different things to different people. It was good to know that things like staying curious and being an optimistic person are helpful in aging well and keeping the mind sharp. I'd definitely recommend this book to anyone in their 30s, 40s and 50s who want to make sure they get to their older years in the best shape possible!
Age Smarrt- Discovering the Fountain of Youth to Midlife and Beyond.......2006-05-25
The simple fact of the matter is that we boomers are living younger--longer. In Age-Smart,Discovering the Fountain of Youth to Midlife and Beyond, Jeffrey Rosensweig and Betty Liu look at such issues as finances, health and well being, as well as numerous other issues that affect life expectancy. With an abundance of `sensory' caffeine that rejuvenates the spirit, such noted individuals as Former President Jimmy Carter, his wife Rosalynn, Helen Gurley Brown and myriad host of others, will force readers to re-think how they `see' the elderly. With such fun chapters as Just Say No to Pink Pants, Age Smart is chockfull of easy-to-use tips that supports that old adage,`that age is nothing but a number,' and I was humbled to be asked to be a part of what I predict will be a invaluable resource for men and women of all ages for years to come.

Book Description
This book is for all people using, owning, or collecting fountain pens and their matching pencils. It will introduce the beginning pen collector to the hobby and answer questions asked by advanced pen collectors about the earliest and rarest of pens. With over 1,000 fountain pens illustrated in full color, full- or nearly full-sized photographs, it will help identify pens and provide the opportunity to examine many of the pens that were produced. George Fischler and Stuart Schneider are well-respected leaders in the antique pen world. They bring their love and knowledge of these works of art to this book. The examples they present represent the whole range of the history and production of fountain pens, from the earliest to the present and from the most common to the rarest. L.E. Waterman, Parker, Swan, Sheaffer, Wahl-Eversharp, Mont Blanc, Crocker, Chilton, Moore, A.A. Waterman and many other companies are included in this comprehensive, heavily illustrated history. In addition to photographs of the pens, a large representation of the company's advertising has been gathered and reproduced in Fountain Pens and Pencils. A must for collectors, dealers, and all those who appreciate the ingenuity and creativity of industry.
Customer Reviews:
Very Comprehensive.......2006-03-11
It is a big book with lots of information. Not a book for casual collectors. However it is "a must have" book for serious collectors. The first few chapters are especially very useful as they describe essential aspects of collecting pens and things to look for. They also tell the history and evolution of fountain pens. The history of the big pen companies are quite detail and of course there are lots and lots of beautiful photographs of the pens.
Best book buy........2005-09-08
I purchased this book for my husband for fathers day and he loved it. There were so many pictures. We could not wait to see if any of his collection was in the book. If you are a pen collector, this is definately the book to have.

Well worth the price.......2000-07-16
Simply put, this book is an essential item for any serious fountain pen enthusiast or collector. To the best my knowledge, only Andreas Lambrou's Fountain Pens of the World compares (or even surpasses it, actually) in scope and depth, and Lambrou's book is twice the price.
Nor is this book limited to the seasoned expert; I first read it as an utter novice and found it delightfully accessible (the plentiful color photos go a long way here.) The only caveat is that - as mentioned by another reviewer - the suggested prices seem very high; it might be a mistake for a neophyte to base purchasing decisions on the listings in this book.
Pass up that aero-filler 51 or that unrestored blurrily-photographed vac major, for the time being, and pick up a copy of this book instead. In the long run, it's a far better investment if you are truly interested in vintage fountain pens.
Overall a must-have book for the serious collector.......1998-09-22
This is a very good book for the serious collector. The price may seem high but for the wealth of information it provides it is a bargain. This is a new addition with the principle difference over the last addition being updated prices...some of which seem out of line high. Good illustrations. Not every color of a particular model may be represented but they do pretty well trying. Overall, I highly recommend it especially for the new collector.

New Cells, New Bodies, New Life by Virginia Essene, SEE Publ.......2000-09-29
I think that it is a very thorough book on various topics, such as immortality, why we chose to descend here on the physical plane, getting in touch with our higher selves and so forth. It is a book which in a very practical and concise way describes to the reader how he or she can gain access to his divinity within and materialize it in his or her life.

How could a simple request for a new water fountain go so very, very off-track? When Principal Wally Russ writes to fountain designer Florence Waters to ask her to replace Dry Creek Middle School's busted drinking fountain, he little suspects that he is sparking the imagination of an artiste. Kate Klise's charming mystery novel is told entirely in letters and faxes, as the glamorous Florence visits Dry Creek and becomes friends with Mr. Sam N.'s fifth-grade class. The class helps Florence design the most outrageous water fountain ever, and along the way uncovers the dirty (and rather wet) secret that dwells underneath Dry Creek Middle School. Writes Florence to her new fifth-grade friends, "Your drawings are hanging in my studio. Pure inspiration. Of course a drinking fountain should have tropical fish and chocolate shakes!" The book reads like an inspired combination of the epistolary novels Daddy-Long-Legs and Griffin & Sabine. Line drawings by M. Sarah Klise adorn every page, with "snapshots" of the fifth-grade class, pages from the local paper, and coffee-stained While You Were Out notices thickening the stew. The emphasis on visual elements should make the book a hit with kids who claim they don't like to read. Author Klise knows her audience: bad puns flow as freely as water and the plot is just convoluted enough to challenge kids without frustrating them. The Klise sisters have created a classic of comic children's literature. (Ages 8 and older) --Claire Dederer
Book Description
The Dry Creek Middle School drinking fountain has sprung a leak, so principal Walter Russ dashes off a request to Flowing Waters Fountains, Etc.
...We need a new drinking fountain. Please send a catalog.
Designer Flo Waters responds:
"I'd be delighted...but please understand that all of my fountains are custom-made."
Soon the fountain project takes on a life of its own, one chronicled in letters, postcards, memos, transcripts, and official documents. The school board president is up in arms. So is Dee Eel, of the water-supply company. A scandal is brewing, and Mr. Sam N.'s fifth grade class is turning up a host of hilarious secrets buried deep beneath the fountain.

Great book.......2007-09-29
My daughter (10 yrs old) read this book in school as a 5th grade assignment. She and her classmates loved it! The book is self-described as a tale of "liars and leaks." It is about a leaky fountain in a middle school that causes the principal to slip and fall repeatedly. The tale continues with the school's attempts to replace the fountain with a custom-made fountain. In comes "Florence Waters" -- a fountain designer. Want more? Read the book...it is highly recommended!
Terrific Summer Reading - especially for kids.......2007-05-20
"Regarding the Fountain: A Tale, in Letters, of Liars and Leaks" (ages 8 and up) is a very silly & wonderful book, filled with puns from the first page till the last.
Dry Creek Middle School needs a new fountain, and who better to build it than Florence Waters, a world traveler who tells it like it is (to the stuffy principal Walter Russ she writes, " ... my goodness, you sound just like the author of the little book of directions that came with my blender.")
Florence keeps the school year exciting through her correspondence with fifth-grade teacher Mr. Sam N. and his students, including Tad Poll, Minnie O., Shelly, Gil, Lily and Paddy.
The students uncover a nasty scheme orchestrated and perpetuated by the school board president, Ms. Sally Mander, and her co-conspirator, a Mr. Dee Eel.
Not only does the school end up with a world-class fountain, but Dry Creek returns to its aquatic splendor and is aptly renamed Geyser Creek."
-- Excerpted with permission from a published review, in Palo Alto (CA) Weekly by columnist Debbie Duncan.
Engaging! Entertaining! Enjoyable! .......2007-05-08
I picked up this book from the desk of one of my students and was immediately intrigued by the format. When she finished with it, I checked it out from our school library and read it in two days--and then only because I had a few other things to accomplish. This book was a real page-turner, and it was fun to see what each page would bring. REGARDING THE FOUNTAIN was great fun!
I am online to purchase my own copy. Okay, maybe this book isn't meant for adults, but adults can still have fun, yes? If you're an adult, give this a try. Or at least buy a copy for one of the kids in your life! I think the Klise sisters are creative geniuses!
Regarding the Fountain.......2006-11-30
Have you ever curled up with a book and hot chocoate? Regarding the Fountain is a hilarious book that you can embrace with an intriguing plot twist and creative plot approach by Kate Klise. This book tells the story of county called 'Dry Creek' that has no spring water (told in letters, notes, and transcripts). The problem is Dry Creek Middle School needs a new fountain becaue the old one sprung a leak. Principal Walter Russ sends a request to a lady named Florence Waters to build a fountain.
Extravagant and bouncy as she is, she takes all school year to get items for the fountain, while mailing items to a fifth grade class. Meanwhile Sally Mander and Derbert Dee Eel are hiding a secret. Sally doesn't want to establish a new fountain there. She is also president of the school board and votes against it till the fifth grade clas is forced to return the gifts. In the last three months of school, one kid is searching for a tape recorder that Florence Waters sent, because needed to give it back, and they hear Sally and Dee's secret.
This suspenseful, cleverly written story is a tale of letters, liars, and leaks. witha fountain to splash in, scuba dive in and ice skate. I'd rate it 5 stars because, regarding the fountain, you'll jump right in!
A great book.......2006-06-24
This book uses letters and memos to weave together a charming and catching story, which follows the mystery of why the fictional town of Dry Creek lost its water supply 30 years ago. The book will keep your attention and the main character, Florance, shows through example the theme of not being selfish and of caring about more important things than rules and "the usual" way of doing things. A very pleasant story great for both kids and adults.
Customer Reviews:
Eye opening; Everyone should read this book........2007-06-13
Not only is the book well written and thoroughly researched but the content is superb. Ms. Friedan hits every major issue related to aging in a personal and exploratory style. I love her voice and tone throughout. Don't pass this one up!
Betty Friedan's THE FOUNTAIN OF AGE.......2006-11-10
Betty Friedan's THE FOUNTAIN OF AGE is an excellent overview of how America views older people. She eschews all forms of discrimination from warehousing the elderly in nursing homes, separating older people from society in the retirement communities, and the negative attitudes of the medical profession toward this population. Older people are not decrepit poor things. Older people have the capacity to keep learning and growing. Just as she revolutionized women's roles in THE FEMININE MYSTIQUE, Ms. Friedan does the same for THE AGE MYSTIQUE. The book is beautifully written and meticulously researched. I couldn't recommend it more highly.
The 'Cheerful' Side of Aging.......2001-12-23
Betty Friedan wrote The Fountain of Age as a journey to redefine age, and to demystify the age mystique. Each chapter stands alone as an essay, exploring the many tribulations of old age. She allows us to follow her on this journey, which she starts at the age of 60 with her own fears and denial of aging, and ends with the celebration of age.
One of the main themes that run through this book is that age is perceived only as a decline or deterioration from youth. This assumption has become so pervasive throughout the professional community and society, that Friedan finds older people believing it to be true, having all bought into the decline model of aging. She writes each chapter challenging this assumption, pointing out the injustice along with the solution, usually through social-political change. This is reflected in such chapters as `Denial and the "problem" of age', `The Retirement Paradox', and `A Paradigm Shift from "Cure"'.
In the `Denial and "Problem" of Age', one of the things Friedan finds is that media consistently leaves out any appearance of older individuals on television and in advertisements saying "The blackout of images of women and men visibly over sixty-five, engaged in any vital or productive adult activity, and their replacement by the "problem" of age, is our society's very definition of age." She goes on to say, "Clearly the image of age has become so terrifying to Americans that they do not want to see any reminder of their own aging." She realizes the image of age was viewed as one of decline and deterioration, a mystique, not of desirability, but of trepidation. Growing old has almost become unspeakable, which stems from our obsession with youth.
Friedan takes on the ageist ideology of corporate America in the chapter `The Retirement Paradox', saying at sixty-five or even before, older workers are forced into retirement, If not by law, then by social expectation, when many still want to work, and still have one-third of their lives still to live and be productive. Declaring this a great injustice to older workers, Friedan believes we don't have to continue to be structured in terms of lifespan of the past, suggesting that companies who are smart enough to adjust to the increasing population of older workers will be able to harvest enormous talent.
In `A Paradigm Shift from "Cure"', Friedan believes the assumption of age being likened to sickness or debility keeps the medical community and even the elderly themselves from dealing with the symptoms of legitimate illnesses. The role of functional assessment is important in treating the elderly, saying, "A new version of the old-fashioned family doctor, trained to treat the whole person, is what is needed." She goes on to say "Doctors and nurses must go beyond medicine's two traditional goals: " to cure disease and to prevent disease." Their goal now has to be to preserve and improve the quality of life for the older person." For Friedan, the paradigm shift is one from the passive medical model of care of the elderly to actually controlling their own age.
Friedan undertakes issues that haven't truly been addressed before, so as a gerontologist this book is important to me. She opens our eyes to the social implications the decline model holds for our elderly, and the paradigm shift that needs to take place if we are going to look at the abilities and qualities that may develop or emerge in men and women in later life, and contemplate new possibilities for their use.
Going beyond, or the transcendence of age is how Friedan concludes her journey. Given the new possibilities old age holds, she believes the elderly have to be pioneers of a new kind of age. She found these people all across the country, applauding old age instead of dreading it. She sees old age as an opportunity for a new beginning, a new horizon, to do the things you never had the chance to do before. These people were continuing to evolve and grow into their new age. Those who originally were searching for the fountain of youth, found the fountain of age instead.
A Must Read!.......2000-08-28
I'm only forty and was drawn to this book because of what Betty Friedan has created for women in this century. I was delightfully surprised to find a book about "aging" was engaging for me. Her wonderful insights and perspectives have forever changed my outlook on getting older, and the examples and studies she cites have challenged not only my stereotypes, but allows me to challenge those of friends, families and doctors! This is a must read, REGARDLESS of your age! Perhaps even, the younger you are (to an extent!), the more profound these realities will be. I really enjoyed the audio book, which she reads herself, and plan to purchase the hard copy to have on hand to read again.
Not too popular a book.......2000-08-01
The fact that there is only 1 customer review on this tome of a book does not diminish its importance. It simply validates what the author is saying about people denying they're getting older. My zen book comforts me: For the ignorant, old age is winter; For the learned, it is harvest. Since this book was published Friedan has written yet another book, an autobiography. I am impressed with her vigor and intelligence.
Book Description
Using today's most leading-edge therapies and breakthroughs in the science of longevity, a pioneering holistic physician shows how we can healthfully age to one hundred, and beyond.
By following commonsense habits, we can expect an average lifespan of one hundred years. Adding the life-enhancing effects of natural DHEA restoration, stress reduction, meditation, reduced caloric intake, and a range of mind/body techniques may, however, give us another forty years of active, healthy living. Therein lies the available "fountain of youth." These are the conclusions of Dr. C. Norman Shealy after a long career in medicine and, in recent years, as one of the leading spokesmen of alternative medical treatments.
The result of years of clinical practice and research, Youthful Aging also exposes the fallacies behind many of the claims of the medical profession and the pharmaceutical industry. These two groups, says Shealy, rather than increasing people's life expectancy, create the opposite effect, consigning hundreds of thousands of people to an often miserable and premature old age. As a counterpoint, this revealing book provides the most ambitious-yet medically grounded and practical-longevity program available.
Customer Reviews:
Use caution with this book.......2006-10-09
Throughout Dr. Shealy's book, he continuously touts his products. After a while, the repetitious branded names of the SheLi TENS, Dr. sHEALy's Essentials tablets, Dr. sHEALy's Youth Formula tablets and his Biogenetics Magnesium Lotion makes his book sound more like an infomercial than authentic informative research. Whenever there is product pushing involved in a book like this an alarm of caution should immediately sound. There should be cause for concern that findings may be created or embellished as a way of selling them instead of providing accurate research and truthful information.
The cleansing Doctor.......2006-05-24
Dr Shealy is among the very, very few modern-day MDs who understand, acknowledge, and practice the role of dietary cellular cleansing in disease. And this book is no exception. While he gives great clues as to how people grow successfully old and how we can, too, there are dietary and external tips for keeping the cells cleansed and the metabolic waste moving throughout the entire book. It's a central theme in his work. During his book tour this past week, Shealy was asked by a reporter for one quick tip (to staying old). His cell-cleansing response? "If you want a single health habit that will help everyone, it's 20 to 30 minutes of sitting in a sauna or soaking in a hot tub. Even a hot bath. It reduces your stress and you sweat away toxins."
Shealy's approach to health was highlighted by one of the ending statements he said in a live presentation I saw him give back in 1997. It struck such a nerve that I wrote it down then, and quoted it 4 years later in my first book. He said: "The next great advance in the health of the American people will come not from hospitals or laboratories, but from what people will learn to do for themselves."
I still have not found a better creed by which to live.

GLORIOUSLY DETAILED 17TH CENTURY ITALY.......2004-03-04
An enchanting story of a boy's dream and his realization of the importance of patience takes place during alandmark period in art history.
The Neptune Fountain/The Apprenticeship of a Renaissance Sculptor by Taylor Morrison recreates seventeenth century Italy in glorious detail.

Neptune's Fountain by Taylor Morrison.......2001-04-18
Morrison has captured the essence of the apprenticeship program in Renaissance Italy. Illustrated and written by Morrison, the book describes the process used in sculpting massive pieces and the quarry process. Fully illustrated in Morrison's inimitible style, this fictionalized account describes the life of a young apprentice in his quest to learn the "art."
Fully illustrated, historical fiction, includes full glossary of art terms used.
Of interest to young artists, Renaissance Italy buffs and children in grades 4-6.
A TREMENDOUS followup to Antonio!.......1997-03-26
This much anticipated (by me) followup to Mr. Morrison's first book: ANTONIO'S APPRENTICESHIP,is a delightful story and beautiful to view. As his only brother/sibling I've grown up watching him (Taylor), flip over placemats at restaurants, draw in books, and bring home steadily more beautiful work from school. But as a psychiatrist, I appreciate the affect of his work. In a time of "in-your-face attitude", there is quiet times in his book: in the story, and the paintings and (my favorite) the drawings. Sometimes the body language reminds me of times working with Taylor and my dad around our house (I know one painting has the sky from our backyard). My recommendation is to find a kid (preferably 3rd-4th grade) struggling with homework, soccer, and music practice, read this book together, and enjoy the quiet time

To help young children come to grips with war.......2005-11-28
When my four-year-old son began to learn that the U.S. was involved in a war, he had a very difficult time understanding both war and its potential--specifically, he feared that the war would reach his hometown and engulf the people he loves. A wise aunt gave us this book as a present. When my son and I read it together, it helped us discuss war. More importantly, it gave him a sense of control over war. Certainly he does not believe that a boy, peeing on a war, can end that war. But the sense of control--however chimerical--was necessary and calming for him at that age. The illustrations are simple and convey the relevant emotions. The fact that the book ends with the statue--concrete history (fictionalized or not)--helps the aura of control. This book, like nothing else, helped our family to talk about what war is and what war isn't, and it allowed our son to sleep at night again. I cannot recommend it strongly enough.
Manneken Pis: A Simple Story That Entertains.......2002-10-28
When the book first arrived on the shelves of the library that employs me, most of my coworkers agreed they would never read the book to children. In fact, there were bets being placed as to how long it would last before some parent complained about the content. But, I'm here to say that Manneken Pis: A Simple Story of a Boy Who Peed on a War does more than just rely on the laughs the images of a peeing boy conjures. While I cannot vouch for the validity of the history lesson the book provides (not my best subject), I can vouch that the story engrossed the fourth grade classes I read it to. The story starts off as any other folk tale might, with a beautiful family in a beautiful town where everyone is happy. Soon the war strikes, and the book focuses most on the viciousness of war, showing the soldiers as pseudo-human gremlin types, and the ill effects it has on the town. The child, torn from his parents wanders the streets and in a moment of dire emergency, relieves himself from the top of the town wall causing the soldiers to break into a laughter so fierce that they fall asleep from exhaustion. When they wake up, no one can remember why the war started, and the little boy who peed on a war becomes a town hero, complete with a bronze statue named after him. The book's illustrations are simple and colorful and work great in this situation. Anything too realistic could have caused far more controversy than the book needs. Highly recommended to show children that war is bad, laughing and pausing to think is good, and sometimes, if a person REALLY has to go, they REALLY have to go.
