Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

5 out of 5 stars Life Change Even for a Twentysomething.......2003-08-22

I have been taking Glenda's yoga class for the past 2 years and from day 1 I have been impressed with her. She is amazing. She's beautiful, and toned and in awesome shape. All I can say at age 29 is, I hope I look half as good as she does when I reach her age. To all of those individuals who are younger, don't overlook this book because you think its for the older generation. Glenda has helped me lose weight, become the most toned I've ever been, and feel the best I've ever felt. The only down side to getting the book is that you can't hear her incredibly soothing voice in your home. Yoga has changed my life. And as long as I'm able, I will practice this method. This book gives you a good demonstration of what she teaches in her classes and I highly recommend it to people of all ages.

5 out of 5 stars "Grace".......2003-06-06

Glenda has been my yoga instructor since her practice began. I have experienced, first hand, her knowledge and respect for the human body, as well as the peace, patience, and poise she models to each class. She is a "fireball"; the perfect combination of strength, and softness. All you have to do is follow her guide to the age-old secret of Yoga, and before you know it, you'll be in shape!! If you are not able to attend her classes, or if you just want to jazz up your own yoga practice, or even if you are totally new to Yoga, this book is meant for you! You will be inspired by her incredible form, swept away by the beautiful view, and enlightened by the detailed descriptions, and explanations of all of the healing qualities of Yoga. Burn a candle, take some deep breaths, and follow Glenda's powerful routine. Buy this book, and you will be drinking from the fountain of youth!!

5 out of 5 stars FABULOUS! You should see how good her students look.......2003-06-02

This book is incredible- it explains the benefits, pose by pose, and makes the reader want to take better care of him/herself starting yesterday. Notice how good SHE looks! Also, the transformations that happen with the people who regularly do her yoga program are stunning. This book is a must read for anyone who wants to age gracefully, manage stress, or transform their body to a level of fitness & flexibility they never thought possible.

A friend of mine and I were looking at some of the new yoga books and this one just popped out at us. we do yoga about 4 nights a week and we needed some new material. Yoga Turns Back the Clock was a amazing because it showed us a whole new perspective on yoga and showed us how it can be used to tone, to burn fat, or best of all to look younger. We have been using the book for only a few weeks but we think that it is best yoga book we have bought in a while. we love the approach and the style. it is also great for beginners, like us, who are not as flexible as many other yoga books expect you to be. Yoga Turns BAck the CLock challenges us without making us get into positions that we could not even begin to. i love this book and suggest it for anyone who likes doing yoga or wants to start.

5 out of 5 stars Feeling Better Every Day.......2003-05-23

I work in an office everyday from nine in the morning to six at night and when i get home the only thing I think about is getting into some confortable clothes and settling down. But lately I have been noticing how tired I am all day. A friend suggested I start doing yoga like her. I am not a big gym fan so I went to bookstore and I found Glenda's book. It is brand new- just came out in May. That night I went home a bit skeptical, but I started that evening anyway. I was amazed at how good it felt to be doing exercise again. Unlike most arerobis plans that have always made me more tired the yoga in Glenda's actually had me feeling looser, energized and more fit. It gives you a great sense of accomplishment. A week into it and I was hooked. I have been doing the program for about three weeks and must say that it is the best feeling. I am not feeling as tired at work and my husband even said that I look younger and happier. My teenage daughter has started doing the exercises at night with me and we are having a lot of fun. I just have to say thanks Glenda.

5 out of 5 stars Superb Program that Combines Yoga Poses with Weight Training........2006-08-08

With plenty of photographs and explanations you can not go wrong while performing the Iron Yoga Workouts and Exercises / Poses.

I am really please to be able to train my arms, shoulders, chest, and back while doing Yoga. This is something you absolutely have to try if you already like Yoga. I enjoyed the book so much that I ended up also buying the Iron-Yoga's DVD.

If you want to experience an innovative body-shaping and toning routine this may be for you.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money.......2006-01-31

This book is a waste of money. There is basically 3 or so poses that you use weights with. Save yourself some money and just use your own imagination on how you could use a weight in say a Warrior pose, or a side plank pose, or chair pose and you'll be ahead of the game.

4 out of 5 stars I Was Surprised and Pleased.......2005-11-14

As a yoga teacher I buy many videos to see what others are doing. I was pleasantly surprised to see and experience this video. It is done with mindfulness and is very effective. If it becomes too easy to do the tree, I have my students close their eyes; now when that becomes too easy I will have them use light weights. The speed in which this is done is to avoid injury and I thank the instructor for that.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Program.......2005-10-23

Recently, I started doing yoga with my wife and discovered a whole new dimension of fitness. My fitness objectives basically consist of weight control, muscle tone and staying as healthy as possible in order to do the other things I enjoy for as long as possible. This all boils down to eating less and moving more.

I'm only a novice, but this book and companion DVD have been a tremendous help. The book is best as reference tool when you want to explore details, background or study the pictures and descriptions. The DVD allows you to get started immediately.

Iron Yoga combines light weight training (2-5 lb dumbbells) with traditional Power Yoga poses to give you a full body workout. No argument here. It uses four types of poses: standing, seated, prone (face down), and supine (face up). The book illustrates all the poses with very good photos and explanations. One excellent aspect of both the book and DVD is that there are also examples of modified poses for beginners and intermediate experience levels. I found these especially helpful. Even with the 2 lb dumbbells, these poses are pretty tough, but well worth the effort. You can add weight as you become accustomed to a given weight level.

The book says that you benefit physically, mentally, and spiritually. I don't know about that, but I've decided to replace my exercise workouts with the Iron Yoga routines combined with a good walking program.

5 out of 5 stars Clear & Instructive.......2005-09-23

I'm not usually a fan of exercise books. However, I find Iron Yoga to be different than the usual fare. The author's writing style is more personal and connecting. I can feel his passion for the topic. As you read it you'll understand why this variation of yoga came about and why it works so well.

I especially like the instructive text under each position. There is nothing worse than just having a picture to explain a position. Iron Yoga has just the right combination of pictures and text. The author is very clear and writes with the authority of an instructor. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Yoga Book!.......2002-04-25

I am a Yoga teacher, and I recommend this book for home practice. The point of Yoga is to turn inward, and really feel what your body is doing, and what your body needs. In classes, we tend to get competitive, which really hinders our practice. This book is a great way to learn poses to do at home, and without having someone there yapping at you the entire time, you tend to really FEEL the poses. I think classes are important to learn postures and how the corrected posture feels, but I encourage people to have a home practice as well. This book is wonderful.... big pictures makes it easy to use while practicing, and a few different series of Asana's in the back help guide you through an at home class. The basic meditation helps people start to understand how to quiet the mind, and the Chakra info is wonderful! Namaste!

5 out of 5 stars A Good Yoga Book for Home Practice.......2001-05-23

This is my one of my favorite yoga books... it explains about lines of energy, chakras, the different types of yoga and Hatha Yoga, and of course, is full of some basic poses. It also includes some sequences for different occasions, included the classic Sun Salute. The nice thing about this book is that it also has clearly explained breathing exersizes, and what the do. It also has a nice intro to meditation, and includes severla different meditatoin techniques to introduce you to this idea. Of course, if you don't take classes, you SHOULD start taking them, and even if you do, this book will help you with your own at home rutine. Overall, a good little book.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Read for Beginners.......2007-06-17

I agree with one of the other reviewers, this book does a very good job at breaking down the primary series adding an abundance of modifications to fit any level. In fact I bought this book about 6 years ago and learned the Ashtanga Yoga primary series primarily from this book.

My only gripe is there is not a visual or cards of the sequence of practice as in Beryl's second book on Power Yoga. I recommend both books and David Swenson's Ashtanga Yoga, which has a great spiral binder (designed specifically for at home practice) for those looking to learn practice at home or supplement practice from classes.

5 out of 5 stars Power Yoga .......2006-11-02

This is a great book that really details how yoga can benefit you and goes through the entire Ashtanga series. Great for beginners and yoga vets!

4 out of 5 stars A great book for those already in shape.......2004-08-15

I am personally having a great experience with this book. The explanations are clear, the pictures are very helpful, and the beginner modifications are encouraging since most people including myself do not start out as very flexible. After reading some of the other reviews, however, I've concluded that the book is probably most helpful for those who are already in good physical condition. Some of even the beginning asanas take a moderate amount of strength. If you do not think that you can do 5-6 pushups or hold your weight with your arm strength, it would probably be better for you to take a class where a teacher could spot you and give you more specific instruction.

5 out of 5 stars Does the best job of breaking down the Primary Series.......2003-10-17

As a previous reviewer said the Primary Series should not be learned solely through a book. This book does the best job of breaking down most of the difficult poses, offering great modification poses to help work a person into the pose that's part of the series. For instance the half bound lotus forward bend is by not means an easy pose (at least not for me). Bender offers beginner and intermediate modifications to help you work to the full version of the pose. She does this throughout the book giving the reader a chance to build up his/her endurence while he/she is learning the series. I used this book in conjunction with Julie Pegrum's "Ashtanga Yoga: The Complete Mind and Body Workout" Book. Together they are the next best thing to going to class. Overall, I have seen nothing better that helps a person learn the Primary Series, and at the same time, making finishing it semi-attainable.

4 out of 5 stars good but as a supplement.......2003-01-07

This is a great book HOWEVER it's best used, as another reviewer stated, as a supplement to a class or video instruction. I learned yoga (beg.- intermed.) from a book by the American Yoga Assoc. and had no trouble following that one. After 9mos. of doing "traditional" yoga at least 3x/week, I purchased this book with the idea that it would be very similar, just a little more intense. Wrong. If you're not intimately familiar with all of the poses beforehand, it's hard to follow due to the layout of the book. Will go back to this book after perfecting poses via video.

5 out of 5 stars All one will need is this book..............2005-12-26

An excellent mind/body wholistic health educator, that not only gets one into to great shape, but also help's one deal with the whole range of emotional issues that accompanies a fitness program. I have found that the techniques learned in this book extends way past the gym, and into every aspect of my day-to-day life. One doesn't need to purchase useless pills, prepared meals, or powders to full-fill the author's well thought out programs and nutritional advice. In fact, one can do most of the book's mind/body exercises on the local walking trail or in one's bedroom, and all the proper foods can be purchased at one's local grocery store.

PS. I've also lost 30 lbs and I'm in better shape now at the age of 36, than I was at the age of 18.

4 out of 5 stars With these used prices, the best deal in fitness........2005-10-12

This a very thorough book. I continue to like it more as time passes. It has detailed instructions for weight training, yoga , and aerobics. Who else will give you a superlative set of istructions for 'downward dog', and soon after do the same for 'overhead squats'?,(usually used as an adjuct to olympic weighlifters' training regimens). Ilg understands that the three systems must each stand alone technically to be done properly, but he also understands the synergy of the three. To paraphrase one of Ilg's thoughts: Yoga gives one the body awareness to improve at weight training, and weight training gives one strength to improve at yoga. This a wonderful insight, and it's this type of thinking that adds up to making this sytem the single best for most fitness seekers. (( It's available from Amazon's 'new & used' sources for quite a low price. )) I only have one complaint: Many of Ilg's promotional photos show him using yoga blocks, but the book uses no blocks .

5 out of 5 stars Steve Ilg Rocks!.......2005-07-28

This book is phenomenal.
I really love Steve's focus on functional strength, as opposed to
strength for strengths sake.
Ilg combines Yoga, Strength, Cardio, Meditation and Nutrition.

The workouts are challenging and extremely effective, they will transform your body (and mind) if you follow through. Steve's encouragements all throughout the book are very helpful/motivating.

5 out of 5 stars Street/trail/gym/yogi credibility and guaranteed results.......2005-02-13

Mr. Ilg will get you in shape physically and mentally, guaranteed.
I approached his book from a reformed weightlifter/runner to now a yogi/runner's perspective.
First the yoga information:
Many modern and not-so modern yogis claim that yoga is all anyone needs as far as exercise, but I completely disagree. Despite their attention to bandhas, tai chi like connecting movements, and yoga breathing, I don't think yoga alone is a cardiovascular workout. Moreover, I don't feel that the combination of low plank, high plank, crow, and handstands is enough to develop upper body strength. If you look at most yogis (no offense, please) such as Steve Ross (Inhale on Oxygen 6 a.m. weekdays), Bikram Choudury, and others, they don't look very strong. The best in this area to me has been Baron Baptiste (he of the ubiquitous bandana) and his attention to "functional strength."
Fortunately, Mr. Ilg politely calls the yogi community out on this subject and carefully illustrates the need to "strength train" in addition to yoga.
His High Performance Yoga (trademarked I believe) still uses these poses, but as a complement to the work in the gym. Also, his yoga routine is functional not fancy, incorporating all the sun salutations and warrior poses, as well spinal twists, backbends, forward bends, and inversions. Maybe most importantly he introduced me to a pose not found in many yoga books and not on Yoga Journal's website pose section: the yoga squat (this should be called the Ilg squat). It's a fantastic pose.
As for Mr. Ilg's strength training advice: solid and proven. He limits between set rest to 30 seconds and does power movements such as squats, stiff-legged deadlifts, benches, military presses, etc. No high rep,"shaping movements" fluff here.
His cardio advice is also great. No "just gardening is cardio" or park your car in a farther spot blather, but rather a discussion on the necessity of hard training such as bicycling, running, and more.
Mr. Ilg gets very, very, very deep into the meditation and spiritual "stuff." He loses me here, but that is my weakness. Hopefully, you will be able to embrace this important area.
Another area Mr. Ilg recommends that I could not survive: media fasting. I'm sorry, but I have to read the Journal/Times daily or I feel lost. If you can do this, your journey will be more advanced than mine. He doesn't say you have to do it daily, of course.
Nutritionally, I can't personally see eliminating meat & dairy without some heavy protein supplementation. If I'm training two-three hours daily (Mr. Ilg's recommendation), I don't see how a diet high in fiber and natural foods other than meat and dairy can provide enough protein. He may be right; it's just not for me.
Please, if you are considering getting "fit" realize that cardio, strength training, or yoga alone will NOT be enough individually. You have to combine all three (throw in meditation if you can and of course nutrition). Based on those proven facts, please welcome Coach Ilg into your life. You will save a lot of money purchasing this one book, instead of several for strength training, cardio, and the often incomplete yoga books. You won't be disappointed.

Thanks for reading.

P.S. Attentive readers may note that I previously reviewed this tome. I used some unfortunate and inappropriate words at the time. I apologize to Mr. Ilg and the Amazon community for that. Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea culpa.

Updated 11.25.05. For some reason when you Yahoo, Google, A9 yoga squat this review comes up, so I want to add a little bit more information.
I still don't understand why more yoga tomes don't discuss the yoga squat, so I want reemphasize how much I appreciate Mr.Ilg's contribution. I do the yoga squat at least 10 times a day (always at least a minute). When I get two minutes during work I do it followed by a one minute forward bend. The yoga squat seems to put my whole body back into line and it unleashes an "energy flow". Also, during my reqularly scheduled two daily workouts, I do yoga squats holding a 25 or 35 pound plate for 2-3 minutes. It deepens the pose and feels fantastic. Everyone should do the yoga squat (knee pain sufferers excluded, although it may help actually).

Update 12.6.06. I just wanted to add another item to the Ilg Squat/yoga squat. The great Steve Ross on his fantastic yoga show Inhale(Oxygen M-F 6 a.m. EST) showed a version of the yoga squat designed to deepen the pose. He just set his feet very wide apart and squatted down. Turning your toes out may help some people. It felt awesome.

Again, big thanks to Mr. Ilg to paying attention to this incredibly important asana.

5 out of 5 stars Nobility and Love.......2005-02-09

Steve Ilg is as noble as they come and his work is a work of love. I have read many other books in the fitness category and none compare to the path of Wholistic Fitness. And it is so much more than just fitness. If you want a program that teaches you about yourself and expands your perceived boundaries about what is possible as a human being, TBT is the place to be. If you want to reach all the podiums of life, look no further.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent coverage of the art of Tai Chi.......2003-06-14

"Total Tai Chi" is one of the more practical instructional and informational texts on the subject. It begins with an exposition of the history and philosophy of Tai Chi. In this section the author points out that Tai Chi is both an ancient martial art and a form of "moving meditative practice". Matthew Rochford discusses the history of the various styles of Tai Chi and how it is used today for health and exercises. These health benefits are quite extensive and include blood pressure regulation, more energy, better balance, increased white blood cell count, better breathing capacity, better posture, improved heart health, improved concentration, and a general state of calmness.

The second part is where the actual practice and forms are introduced. This section is heavily illustrated and well written. The author does well with the formidable writing challenge of trying to explain various physical movements in sufficient detail that the reader can duplicate the movement. In addition, the author takes a unique approach by first concentrating on just the upper body movements, then on leg movements, before combining them to produce the whole body movements. Finally an eight posture movement and a sixteen posture movement are introduced and explained in detail. The section concludes with how to work with a partner.

The book concludes with suggestions on how to use Tai Chi throughout the day including doing some of the exercises while seated and a short morning, afternoon and evening routine. For those interested in learning this ancient form of fitness this is an excellent book on the subject and a highly recommended read.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars best yoga book.......2006-11-10

This book is an excellent source for creating your own yoga program. It has great descriptive pictures and good routines. It doesn't replace a beginner taking a class from a good instructor (no book can do this), but it is a good source for follow-up exercise on your own.

4 out of 5 stars Good, solid information.......2006-01-13

This is an excellent book for any yoga practitioner. The spiral binding is worth the price of the book alone, and the routines are most helpful. Most yoga books don't outline routines and beginners or people with no access to yoga classes are left wanting. The book fills this need.

Of course it doesn't address the spirituality behind Yoga. If it were to do so, it would be an encyclopedic book. For beginners looking to explore Yoga's spirituality, a very good starting point is Donna Farhi's "Bringing Yoga into Life." Patel touches on certain points in a way designed to pique the reader's curiosity, such as the ayurvedic methods, and she provides websites at the back of the book for further exploration.

The asanas are good, solid beginner to intermediate asanas, and I appreciate the contraindications listed for some of them, which isn't provided by most yoga books. I wish more asanas were listed, such as the half-pigeon pose (a favorite of mine) but the book, at least, whets the appetite for more. The only concern I have about the asanas is that there aren't enough pictures outlining some inverted poses, such as the Headstand or the Shoulderstand; when the head and neck are involved, one cannot be too careful. I like seeing the poses and counterposes in their proper sequences, although I wish the author would discuss the need and reason for following a pose with a counterpose at more length.

And now I'm off to do a routine, with the book laid flat on the floor!

5 out of 5 stars Total Yoga by Patel.......2004-08-23

This is an excellent foundational work for beginning yoga
enthusiasts and practitioners. The basics are discussed at great
length. For instance, Kriya yoga is action-based. Sahaya is
spontaneous practice of the art and Viniyoga consists of a
series of fluid movements aimed at deep relaxation and concentration. The Vinyasa Ashtanga emphasize synchronous
breathing techniques to promote health and well-being.
The practice of yoga even extends to food; whereas, the sattvic
are considered to be wholesome foods as opposed to processed
foods. The basic postural elements of yoga are explained.
For instance, the easy posture or leg fold is demonstrated
pictorially together with the more advanced forms. This work
is excellent if you are a beginner. It explains all the techniques in simple English with diagrams depicting the
various motional dimensions of yoga. It is a good value for the
price charged.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for Any Level, But Not Comprehensive.......2003-05-13

I agree with the previous reviewer that the book is well-designed. The spiral notebook spine makes it perfect for laying out while you practice. Everything is illustrated with photos, including blow-ups/close-ups for the more complicated aspects of the asanas. I also enjoy the fact that routines for all age groups, levels of mastery, and states of health (e.g., menopausal and pregnant) are listed with clear, easy-to-follow directions. In short, the book is a great guide for beginners and experts alike looking to try yoga or refresh their memory in the absence of an instructor.

My only caveat is that if you are looking for a blend of the spiritual/metaphysical/philosophical aspect along with the physical aspect of yoga, you will definitely not get it here. The yoga in this book is presented in a very Western, I daresay clinical fashion. The philosophy is implied or sprinkled throughout only to be glossed over, since you can't get into this much detail about yoga without making a few references, however fleeting, to the "other side" (non-physical) of yoga. Any persons who are new to yoga and fear any of the "brain washing" aspects from philosophical indoctrination (which I think is a bogus notion to begin with) need not fear any of that here. The book is very good, low price or not, and thorough in many respects - all the ones most beginners will be concerned with - but it doesn't quite merit the "total" part of its title.

5 out of 5 stars just what a yoga book should be..........2003-05-07

I don't know why all yoga books that show poses aren't all made like this.

This one has a spiral binding and it lies flat so you can see it while you practice. There are photos of each pose, often two or three photos on the page that show you the way you should move into the pose. The photos are large and can easily be seen as you practice. In the back of the book are several suggested practices that put the poses together.

This book focuses far more on the poses than on the underlying philosophy, the branches of yoga, etc. This is a great book to practice with, the best of its kind. And the price is very reasonable for such a quality book--it's an excellent value.

5 out of 5 stars Love this book........2007-09-12

This is the only yoga book I have ever been able to read and do the exercises. Raquel Welch is amazing. I grew up with her yoga. My mom did it every day. There are some good diet ideas in there as well. I've learned a lot from her book.

5 out of 5 stars My first yoga.......2007-04-28

I've been practicing the yoga in Raquel's book since I was in junior high. When I started going to yoga class, instructors were impressed with my "beginner" yoga. Altho I have loved many of my yoga classes, I've longed for a class that features the same balance of postures that Raquel demonstrates.

I recently moved to California and tried Bikram yoga. I surprised to find it is the exact same sequence! I couldn't take the heat, so I'm back at home with Raquel. Now if only I could find a class that had the same postures sans heat!

The book is great in that it details the benefits of each posture and the specific steps and breathe within each posture. Each posture is followed by an explanation of common challenges.

I've purchased many yoga books over the years. Raquel's book and Asana Pranayama Mudra Bandha by Swami Satyananda Saraswati are the best that I've found.

5 out of 5 stars A Time-Tested Winner.......2005-10-10

I bought this book when I was in college in 1987!! The poses are difficult, but Ms. Welch's instruction, and the excellent, un-retouched photos are very easy to follow. The food-combining section is simple to learn and gives immediate results. After doing both the yoga and eating plan for several years, I was in the best shape and lowest weight of my life. Now, nearly 20 years later, I plan to go back to my "old friend" to take off baby weight and get back in shape. I've never found a better book or VHS tape on Bikram yoga.

5 out of 5 stars Best Yoga Book Out There.......2005-07-24

I purchased this book back in 1984 and have never found another yoga book with as much detailed written and visual instruction. The next best thing to Raquel's book is taking a class with an experienced instructor. In her book there is a diagram, "A Chiropractic View of the Spine," which explains what areas of the spine effect certain aspects of your health. My favorite part of the book is the "Benefits." Under each pose is a benefit section which tells what that position does for the body and which conditions it can help to relieve.... I have yet to find this information in another yoga or pilates book. After the pose, there is an "Extra Help" section that is really beneficial to newbys. Every detail is covered in her instruction. Would love to see this on DVD(have the video and love it). Bought a second book because the pages are coming out of my original one. The poses in her book are more advanced than in many of the other yoga books. Not necessarily a lot harder, but more bang for your buck.

5 out of 5 stars Definately a goddess!.......2005-01-24

When are the powers that be going to release this fitness program on DVD. Someone should take the initiative and do this. I'm sure it would sell better than anything else out there. I've done the yoga RW teaches in the past and it gave me a tiny waist and an hour glass figure. I want that back!!!
