Book Description

It is often said that the federal government cannot or should not attempt to address America's problems of poverty and inequality—because its bureaucracy is wasteful or its programs ineffective. But is this true? In this book, Benjamin I. Page and James R. Simmons examine a number of federal and local programs, detailing what government action already does for its citizens and assessing how efficient it is at solving the problems it seeks to address. Their conclusion, surprisingly, is the polar opposite of the prevailing rhetoric—What Government Can Do is an insightful and compelling argument that it both can and should do more.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for concerned citizens........2002-07-31

This book is very informative about a whole range of social issues. Although it specifically deals with the American social scene it has an universal appeal. It dissects problems and situations like poverty, income inequality, lack of a fair electoral system, prevailing taxation policies, basic needs and "rights" of people, educational opportunities, homelessness, etc., and proposes possible solutions for them. This book dispels many myths associated with the poor and the needy. This book was a very agreeable experience for me and I will be promoting it among my friends. This detailed and thoroughly researched book will delight you if you are for Justice, Fairness and Equality. The book has a Reference section that is a treasure for progressive thinkers. Enjoy this book.

Book Description

Manny Ibay, a Los Angeles trial attorney, tells how he applied the Robbins' principles, step by step, to remake his life. Actual excerpts from Mr. Ibay's success journal chronicle his ten-year experience with Robbins' books, tapes and live seminars to move from a $1,000 per month job he hated to designing his dream life and become master of his own destiny. A lifestyle, which enabled him to go on thirty-six vacations in the past five years as well, as operate his own business. Unlike many books on personal development, this is told in storybook form--of how one underachiever was able to follow a well known and widely available success program and use it to his great benefit. This book answers the questions that Tony Robbins fans and skeptics ask after viewing his infomercial. Do the tapes really work? And how can they work for me?

2 out of 5 stars Interesting but a bit flat..........2007-08-28

Manny tells his story about how Tony Robbins helped him change his life.
I was expecting more out of this book and bought it out of curiosity.
There really isn't much meat in it.

5 out of 5 stars I would give this book 6 stars.......2005-09-20

It's the similarity of the author's goals to mine - to do what I want, when I want - that drew me to the book. As also, the essence of Tony Robbins' principles that Manny Ibay has captured so well. Based on the title and subtitle, on an impulse, I ordered the book from Amazon, and it has proven to the best purchase to date I have made.

I am a huge fan of Tony Robbins, but the immense volume of his work makes it difficult to satisfactorily get one's hands around it all, in its entirety. The conciseness of this book, tightly summarizing the distilled wisdom of Tony, makes it a gem. It might sound exaggerated but, truly, I consider this book a jewel in the crown of my library of Tony's books and tapes. The author meticulously records the details of how he applied Tony's advice to his life. He lays bare his own failure/aspirations, provides simple but valuable illustrations from his success journals, outlines the action steps he took, and tracks his progress. His story rings true and convincing. Cynics might say he has not conquered the earth by following his dreams (Becoming a lawyer ...traveling extensively ... acquiring a ritzy convertible, etc) but, in a manner of speaking, he has: what better a world to conquer than the one of your dreams, whatever they may be!

I am particularly appreciative of the moments of doubt/failure that he chose to reveal. It's those instances that made his narrative very real to me, and had me convinced that Tony's success formula does indeed work. That even if it takes a decade, Tony's advice works, if sincerely ACTED UPON. That lofty goals of an Agassi or Mandela are not the only ones worthy of consideration - even breaking out of a dead-end job, yes, is lofty enough for many of us. In fact, it's the very "smallness" of everyday challenges that has most of us, stymied. It's when I can't seem to follow through on even a simple resolve (... like waking up earlier to work on my goals!) that makes me wonder, how the heck do doer's get so much accomplished. The manner in which Manny Ibay, an average Joe, as he calls himself, pulled himself out of his rut has me inspired. It makes me go, yesss, it's possible - and this is how. Thank you, Manny, for sharing your success.

It has been insightful for me to follow the thought processes and actions behind the transformation of a so-called average person - coz' I am average. I have no gut-wrenching handicaps to overcome, or incredibly dazzling heights to reach. I'm yet another dreamer, seeking, amongst other things, a fulfilling, paying, career that will afford me money, flexibility, and leisure - to travel. That's where this book comes in, and scores. It's an excellent model and motivational tool for an "average" person. It's not theoretical pep talk, but a practical, how-to manual -- a step by step, real life example -- on which to base one's own plans for change. I read this book almost every day, to fire me up. I overwrite sections of its workbook/journal with my own "success" entries and/or "failure", which has helped to give form to my own dreams and designs for living. So, how would I rate this book ? 6 stars -- on a scale of Amazon's 1 to 5.

5 out of 5 stars Thank You, Manny Ibay!!!.......2004-01-21

Great read! If you have read a Tony Robbins book, listened to a tape, or have seen him live, then this book is for you! Manny shows how he started with just a great attitude and a belief system to having everything he has ever wanted. Hard work, dedication, and a persistence to accomplishing what you want is what lies ahead for the reader. I look forward to reading more of Mr. Ibay's work. To think, this book started as a thank you note to Tony Robbins. A job well done.

5 out of 5 stars Thank you, Tony Robbins.......2003-11-10

Twice I have read this book from cover to cover, its very inspiring. I have been a tony robbins fan for a number of years and this book gives you a detailed account how Manny Ibay used tony's materials to bring a dramatic change in life. This book is must read if you are struggling and want to change for the better.

5 out of 5 stars Saving the Earth does not get much easier than this.......2005-04-20

Most people want to do whatever they can to make the world a better place and protect the Earth. For them, marching in demonstrations or engaging in direct action is not an option. What to do? In subjects ranging from Air to Water to Food to Global Warming, this book lists many web sites with more information to get the reader involved in protecting the environment.

Perhaps the reader just wants to find out what sort of recycling facilities are in their town. One of their first stops should be to www.earth911.org. To look for reusable or biodegradable diapers, visit www.organicbebe.com. The Wildlife Conservation Society (www.wcs.org) has a very distinguished record in conserving endangered species. For those who have compost heaps, Starbucks will give you their coffee grounds. Details are at www.starbucks.com/aboutus/compost, or talk to your local manager.

A handy wallet card on produce and pesticides called "The Shopper's Guide to Pesticides" (bring it with you when shopping) is available from www.foodnews.org. A good site on global warming is www.climatestar.org. The Busy Person's Guide to Greener Living can be found at www.greenmatters.com. Do you have stuff you no longer need that someone else may want? Before that trip to the landfill, visit www.freecycle.org. Adopt a lobster (and help ensure a continued supply of lobsters) at www.lobsters.org, the Lobster Conservancy.

This is a wonderful book. It's small (it really can fit in your back pocket), it's well laid out, and the reader can pick their level of involvement. It is very highly recommended. Saving the environment does not get much easier than this.

5 out of 5 stars What a wonderful book!.......2004-11-16

This little book is simply amazing! It is a wealth of information, contacts and web sites regarding the environment and ways we can do our part to help. It is like the spark of desire, that hopefully, ignites the fire of action, encouraging us to seek out and "embrace a more environmentally friendly lifestyle". It is witty, informative and easy to navigate. A perfect gift and an exceptional manual for a meaningful life.

5 out of 5 stars Useful, Delightful, Hopeful.......2004-11-09

As is the list of environmental problems so overwhelming and the scale so global, so is the feeling that one person can't make a difference. And, even in the trying, the choices are so many and the information so contradictory, that it's hard to know where to start. Here, at last, is the logical successor to "50 Simple Things...," better, more evolved, and yet easier. A wealth of choices that can be tailored to match what you feel you CAN do now, what you MIGHT feel you can do later, and what you SHOULD be telling your friends-- in short, a compendium of answers on a scale that any of us can comprehend.

5 out of 5 stars Washington, DC loves it!.......2004-11-05

Whether you are young or old, rich or poor, environmentally challenged or conscious, teacher or student, computer savvy or not - you will like this book. It provides real-life resources and contacts, anecdotal examples and insight on how YOU, the reader, can easily help sustain Mother Earth. Great for students of all ages!

5 out of 5 stars What Can I Do? An Alphabet for Living.......2004-11-01

This handy little book is a wealth of information for those of us interested in helping ourselves and our families live more wholesomely and also in connecting with a ready network of concerned companies who are at the cutting edge of reinstating respect for our wonderful planet and all its inhabitants.

When it is time for straightforward talk with your children this book will help. It is hard to talk to your children about adult issues especially when you have some guilt. "Look what I can do!" "I can do it too!" And so begins a lively contest between two water buffalo that ends up being a bigger adventure than either of them had imagined!

2 out of 5 stars A Fifteen Word Book.......2002-05-04

At the end of the excellent 400-page text/program "Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons," twenty books are recommended for children who now (according to the text) read at a second-grade level. This is the third book on the list of twenty. The fourth page of this book, "Look What I Can Do," has five words, "Look what I can do!" On page 7, there are five more words, "I can do it too!" The last page has the same five words as the first page, "Look what I can do!" In between, there are a lot of pictures. If you would like your child to read more than 15 words, you might think about getting a different book.

Book Description

Finding and bonding with an adorable extraterrestrial with wondrous powers sounds like the perfect fantasy, a fantasy that becomes reality for Shiina and Akira, two typical Tokyo teens, as well as for an unknown number of other youths. But the brightest fantasies can cast the darkest shadows, and these cute, cuddly creatures will eventually grow into powerful, fearsome Shadow Dragons that, if bonded with troubled teens, can become threats of the highest order. And when these Dragon-bonded delinquents begin to organize in secret, the danger grows exponentially. Shiina and Akira inevitably draw the attention of this underground movement, and how the two girls choose their paths will determine the direction of their friendship - and, perhaps, the future of Mankind.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Calm before the storm.......2007-05-13

By now, this series has set up nearly all of the major characters' places in its dramatic plot, and a couple little loose ends have been tied up concerning the shadow dragons: hulking, unearthly, and, more often than not, terrifying beasts that the mentally frenzied teenage cast can control to do whatever they wish. It keeps you interested at all times, intrigued at others, and even smiling at a few precious moments. Yet it's no understatement to say that volume 6 will be the last time you smile until a point past the current English releases.

Volume 5 was an offering dedicated to showcasing the murderous talents of the dragons on the evil side of the spectrum, commanded by three high schoolers working together to change the very framework of society. Joining them was Mamiko Kuri, the mysterious girl who reveals in the beginning of this book that she has a dragon, too. Its form remains unknown. Elsewhere, the heroic dragon bearers--headstrong Shiina Tamai, timid Akira Sakura, bitter Norio Koga, and smug Takeo Tsurumaru--are all off on their own adventures after the aerial onslaught brought about by the mysterious villains. Unbeknownst to young girls Shiina and Akira, their calm friend Sudo Naozumi is one of the telepathic dragon bearers they fought high above the ground, and the three make a plan to go on an innocent day of fishing. Trouble in paradise brews as they drive home, though: Sudo invites Akira to join his wicked group (to which she utters no reply), going on to explain that their fishing trip was no different from "hitting someone for your own enjoyment, but the fish can't complain or fight back". Through the whole series Sudo's remain the most brutally honest, realistically-thinking views of all those presented.

But there is another brief plot brewing, one which I consider the happiest and most believable through the whole manga. Some fans call it the story of the "terrible three", and it focuses on the relationship between three new youths, going a bit further into the origin of the dragons as well. Cousins Kyoji and Shoko Fukayama, along with lifelong friend Jyun Ezumi, become entangled in a romantic side story that journeys to every corner of the human heart and forces out some of the strongest emotions exhibited during all twelve of Shadow Star's volumes. The three meet up in Tokyo after a long separation; Kyoji in a coma after falling off an abandoned building, Shoko heartbroken at the severity of his injuries, and Jyun giving Shoko a caustic lecture on how selfish she came across when they wrote letters to one another. Shiina, who had befriended Jyun the previous night when they found each other training on their shadow dragons, is witness to it all, from Shoko confessing her poignant love for Kyoji to Jyun showing her the birth of a dragon princess. Kyoji ends up passing away, Jyun is revealed to be both deceased and a physical form of Kyoji's soul granted to him by the dragons, and Shoko cries that she can keep on loving Kyoji past his death.

If it sounds complicated, that's because it is, but it's, above all else, the ultimate contrast to the upcoming plot, which is without a doubt the most terrifying in the whole series. Author/artist Mohiro Kitoh knocks down your defenses with this volume's account of self-discovery and the power to move on, which makes volume 7 have leaps and bounds more impact. But what happens in the next volume stays in the next volume, and standing up against what has already come, Shadow Star's volume 6 is the simultaneously the best and most compassionate yet.

Barbara A. Glanz knows grief from personal experience. Her son died at a very young age and her husband of many years died recently. Although the ideas in the book come primarily from people who have lost a loved one, most of the ideas are applicable to any kind of loss: the loss of a job, a divorce, the loss of a relationship, the loss of a pet, the loss of health, a move, or desertion.

Written for the person who wants to help the one who is grieving, this book is filled with immediately practical ideas as well as long term, specific ways to help someone move from grieving to growth, and eventually to cherishing good memories.

Book Description

The teenage years are tough-for kids, and for parents. Many teenagers are grappling with a slew of overwhelming emotions, and the results can range from not wanting to be seen with a parent in public to reckless and destructive behavior that can destroy a family. Parents despair as a child becomes a sullen, defiant stranger. A clinical psychologist who's spent more than two decades bringing families back from the brink, Dr. Neil I. Bernstein knows how to help parents and teens successfully navigate these difficult and trying years. Thoughtful, clear-eyed, comprehensive, and refreshingly free of jargon, HOW TO KEEP YOUR TEENAGER OUT OF TROUBLE AND WHAT TO DO IF YOU CAN'T helps parents identify whether their teens are exhibiting typical behavior-such as locking themselves in their room for hours-or are exhibiting real danger signs, such as being secretive, despondent, or constantly angry. And then he tells what to do about it. The focus, above all else, is effective communication: how to avoid threats and put-downs, offer clear explanations, stick with the issues at hand, negotiate, improve listening skills, ask relevant questions, and stop interrogating or lecturing. Throughout, Bernstein uses examples from his practice to tell specifically what to do and say. There is sample dialogue to keep discussions from becoming arguments; signals that parental efforts are actually working; and Skill Builders that give parents the tools they need to ensure their teenagers leave home as responsible, moral adults.

This is a good book. But in some parts it is a decade behind. Our kids and teens are growing up so fast, we can not keep up with the change. This book does have some good hints, helpful ideas and things that will help you to look past the area they are now and where they may be heading.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely helpful.......2005-10-07

I saw Dr. Bernstein on the NBC Katie Couric special on teens and sex a few months ago. I liked the way he provided sound and practical advise on dealing with difficult situations. After reading the book, I felt there really is a way to raise teens effectively without feeling that everything has to be a battle. This book is really true to its title. It offers parents a user friendly approach which is forthright and filled with everyday examples of how to handle challenging situations. I enjoyed reading it and highly recommend it to other parents.

This is too basic a book for therapists. Don't let it's large size fool you. Ok for parents who need some guidance.

4 out of 5 stars Author of Survival Meditations for Parents of Teens.......2004-12-12

As an author and therapist working with teens and their families for the past twenty years, I am constantly looking for resources for parents. This no-nonsense book can help parents when they are at their most desperate by offering real-life solutions to the problems they most frequently face. For support of a more spiritual nature, check out my daily meditations, as together we try to survive this amazing and challenging time in our lives, and the lives of our teens.

5 out of 5 stars When you are facing tough choices with your teen..........2002-04-02

I stumbled across this book on a sale rack and after thumbing through it, realized it offered more information than the dozen other books on raising teens that I'd read. This is one book that does not pull any punches, and confirms the idea that sometimes parents HAVE tried everything, and still their child is acting in such an extreme manner that the home setting is not the best for either child or parents and siblings. My husband and I had been considering an outside placement for our 16 yr. old son, and this book helped us decide how to proceed, with guidelines on locating a facility best suited to our son's needs and ours.

If you are looking at exteme, oppositional and defiant behavior, this book will give you the tools to make an informed decision to get your child's life back on track. Our son is now placed at a therapeutic boarding school relearning the fundamental values of honesty, respect for himself and others, and accountability.
