Customer Reviews:
definitely a keeper.......2007-07-15
i bought this book when i first got interested in herbalism. now most everything i know on taking care of day-to-day illnesses comes from this book. sore throats, headaches, stomach problems, ear problems... it's indispensable. also, it's very well organised and has several indices, so you can search by herb or by complaint. it's a keeper!
FABULOUS!.......2005-07-20
I have just started learning about herbal remedies and leading an herbal lifestyle, and this was one of the first books I read on the subject. I strongly recommend this book to any herbalist - beginners or pros. Jude's recipes are easy to follow - and they are wonderful. I've made my own soap and lotions so far...and they have turned out beautifully. This book has changed my life and opened my eyes to a healthier way of living.
Heal Yourself Without Prescriptions!.......2005-01-10
Herbal Home Remedies By Jude C. Todd, CH, MH, is a household guide to living more simply and benefiting from what our earh and our garden provide us naturally. The author is a master herbalist with her degree from Dominion Herbal College and is widely respected as an authority in the subject which has been her focus for forty years. She explains which plants can be used for health and healing and how and where these should be found or grown. The book is easy to use as the alements and treatments are listed in categories, often with several different natural treatments suggested. She also gives many recipes which have been time tested and proven. You will also find natural and effective cleaners, air fresheners, laundry aids, insect repellent, as well as some tasty uses of herbs in foods. At the back of the book you'll find drawings of many of the plants used in the formulas for safe identifications. This is a fascinating book for those of us unfamiliar with the territory and a must for the serious herb user
A must have.......2004-09-09
If you are a wise woman, healer, medicine woman, or herbalist then add this wonderfull little book to your shelves. I was very pleased to have an older copy of this book and use it all the time. Buy this book along with HERBS AND THINGS and HEALING WISE and you will have a complete herbal library.
Keep it Handy.......2004-07-12
The author gets right to the heart of it with the signature of the herbs---terrific! Not many books out there that tell you exactly what to do, and how much dosage! I've been looking and hers is the best yet! I advise you to keep it handy on your kitchen shelf as you'll be able to use it every day! A great book!

Customer Reviews:
Trying out herbal remedies and cosmetics.......2007-02-11
Having read a lot about Rosemary Gladstar, I purchased two of her books, this one and the Family Herbal. Wonderful, both of them. This Herbs for Natural Beauty has lots of wonderful recipes to 'make your own' cleansers, toners and other products. Don't be afraid of the ingredient lists: some of the things that don't sound familiar will be found in herb shops, health food stores--even some GNC's. When/if that fails, shop online! It's all very affordable.
These recipes are good for spa days, teenage sleepovers (girls would LOVE to make their own facial masks!) or just sisters wanting to relax on a Friday night. I also like to make things that I know are all natural and don't have lots of the extra stuff, and haven't been tested on animals. These are also great for people with sensitive skin (like me) or allergies to different chemicals.
The recipe I use the most is the grains cleanser with almonds and green clay and essential oils. My skin LOVES it, even better than some of the expensive stuff I've tried.
Rosemary Gladstar is a wonder, and you get this beautiful sense of her in the book. She has a website, as well.
great little book.......2007-02-04
This is a great little book of recipes. I go to this all the time when I making a lotion or some type of beauty product. Rosemary is so great, all of her books are the best.
Fun Book Good Resource.......2004-12-07
First off: I love this author's books-after buying this one, I purchased her herbal book for women. This is an awesome book for those like myself who prefer shopping at natural food stores and if you like the idea of making your own beauty products. Rosemary has a warm and friendly style in this well written, easy to read book. I really like how she has enriched the book with personal beauty stories and tips not just recipes. It is a fun little book making use of herbs quite a bit with a lot of great info and recipes packed inside. Would make a great intro book to making your own products but is also a good resource for those with experience. Oh, and there is a good section defining the needed ingredients like cocoa butter, rosewater etc-she tells you what is is/what it does/and availability of the item-very helpful. Thanks to her I know that Borax makes the skin cleaner & softer-it is a great ingredient mined from the earth-not a scary manufactured chemical like I thought! I am happy to have this book as part of my natural beauty library. (I also enjoy using Janice Cox's natural beauty books.)
Warning!.......2004-05-19
Do not buy this book if you already own Rosemary's Family Herbal! All but three recipes in Herbs for Natural Beauty are contained in the Herbal. Even the copy is the same. I was very disappointed.
A Good Book.......2000-05-03
This isn't a very big book, but there is information galore. The recipes are easy, ingredients are easy to find, and the homemade products are wonderful to use. I have bought many books on making comestics, but this small book is right up there with the best. This book is full of knowledge on making natural skin care products. I recommend this small book for anyone who is interested in making cosmestics.

The title may be a bit misleading: while there are plenty of anti-aging ideas presented here, Anti-Aaging Prescriptions also contains chapters devoted to the more general topics of pain relief, weight loss, and insomnia. Written with lots of personal advice from James Duke (who has a Ph.D., not an M.D.), you'll find recipes for everything from mouthwash to skin cream, along with recommendations for following a "Paleolithic" diet and getting plenty of exercise. To Duke, "Paleolithic" means lots of raw-plant food and steady exercise, so really it's just a fun term for what we already know: eating vegetables and grains and working up a sweat are good for us.
The number of herbs mentioned in this book may be overwhelming if you read it cover to cover, so start with the specific sections that you find of particular interest. The table of contents is laid out very specifically, so you can turn right to the section on angina, joint pain, bunions, impotence, or whatever health issue you're looking to improve. Duke has anywhere from 5 to 20 suggested herbs or supplements for any condition, along with the best way of growing or buying that herb and the proper dosage and method of application. Some herbs, such as ephedra, are known to be potentially dangerous, and Duke does an excellent job cautioning users to follow proper dosages as carefully as you would any prescription medicine. He writes with plenty of personal experience and includes interesting anecdotes, but his discussions of particular studies tend to be on the vague side--he may tell you the positive results, but not mention the year the study was published, or who conducted it. Still, anecdotal evidence is enough proof for most of us, and Dr. Duke's upbeat tone, wealth of information, and specific recipes may be just what the doctor ordered. --Jill Lightner
Book Description
On one recent Fourth of July, Peggy and I skipped the manmade fireworks. Instead, we pulled a few lawn chairs past our gazebo into the Garden of Youth to watch nature's own pyrotechnics, the cosmic dance of the evening primrose blossoms and the hawk moths...... We felt calm and peaceful. We felt alive. Rejuvenated. Young.-From chapter 1For Dr. Jim Duke, even gazing at the blossoms of his favorite herb can be an anti-aging activity. His passion for medicinal plants is understandable: They help him feel and look younger than his 72 years.Dr. Duke is convinced that almost all plants contain compounds that can slow aging and minimize its effects on the body and mind. In The Green Pharmacy Anti-Aging Prescriptions, he identifies the herbs and foods that he believes deliver on the promise of lifelong youth. Some of these plants are familiar, like ginkgo for a sharp memory and garlic for....well, just about anything. Others are just beginning to attract attention, like pigweed to strengthen bones and astragalus to boost the immune system. While Dr. Duke specializes in medicinal plants, he firmly believes that a healthy diet and regular exercise must round out any anti-aging plan. That's why this book combines herbal preventives and treatments with nutritional recommendations and lifestyle strategies. But Dr. Duke isn't advocating a formal anti-aging "program" or "regimen." He's giving you choices, so you can develop your own anti-aging plan, based on your unique needs and concerns.By taking the right herbs, eating the right foods, and making some minor lifestyle adjustments, you can stay healthy and maintain your youthful zest for life. Getting older has never felt so good!
Customer Reviews:
A VERY fine book.......2007-07-06
As a professional academic biologist with a background in nursing and biomedical research, I highly commend and even more highly recommend Dr. Duke's book. He is a first rate ethnobotanist. This book, and his ohters, should be far better-known and read. Not does does he give sage advice (so to speak) about herbals, he presents a great approach to life and growing older. Read, consider his line of reasoning, and absorb the larger messages in the books. Then, if you're like me you'll eat better, be more suspicious of standard medical answers and and more open to trying herbal approaches that are frequently safer, and sometimes more effective.
I am a skeptic by profession as is Dr. Duke!), but slowly I've tried many of his suggestions. The results? Over the past two years, as I implemented his advice step-by-step, I found my high blood pressure dropping and needing fewer Rx medications; my type II diabetes is under truly superb control; and my blood lipid levels have been termed "all I could ask for " by my excellent family doctor. And one by one, Rx meds are being discontinued. Oh yes - regular use of turmeric and ginger have all but eliminated my pain from osteoarthritis, better than glucosamine ever did. But be prepared to give these trials a few months to see results.
Dr. Duke is the "real thing" and a wise counsel. Bravo, doctor, bravo!
If you're still a doubter after reading these reviews, read Medical Nemesis by Ivan Illich. Then read Dr. Duke. Modern medicine is still pretty primitive.
The scriptures of youth.......2004-05-07
This extensive and voluminous work reveals nature's goldmine that can help us live a healthy life and explains how to maintain youthful looks and combat disease through the use of the right supplements and foods.
Part One: Beautiful Benefits From The Garden Of Youth, deals with phyto-pharmacy, in other words the miracle substances found in fruits, vegetables and herbs. The author explains the concept of the miracle sevens, i.e. the 7 best beans, whole grains, nuts and seeds, herbs and spices.
Part Two: Natural Strategies That Stop The Clock, contains chapters on amongst others, the best herbs for staying young, easy breathing (including the Broncho-Buster Tea), cancer prevention, digestion, energy, a healthy heart, immunity, mental sharpness and smooth skin.
Part Three: Fighting The Enemies That Age You points out harmful habits and substances and provides remedies for specific problems and diseases like arthritis, fatigue, hair loss, blood pressure problems, diabetes, cholesterol, varicose veins, insomnia and more.
Anti-Ageing Prescriptions is an excellent guide to longevity by means of medicinal plants and their anti-ageing compounds. It also includes lifestyle strategies and recipes for making 76 elixirs. There is a Consumer's Guide To Self-Care, divided into sections for herbs, essential oils and supplements. The book concludes with a bibliography, resources list and index.
I recommend Anti-Ageing Prescriptions along with Renewal by Timothy J. Smith, Stopping The Clock by Ronald Klatz and Robert Goldman, Forever Ageless by Rothenburg and The Superhormone Promise by William Regelson and Carol Colman. The collected wisdom of these works will light the way to a longer, happier life.
Sage advice...........2001-08-17
I thought I would be the 50th person to write a "testimonial" for THE GREEN PHARMACY -- ANTI-AGING PRESCRIPTIONS by James Duke, but it turns out no one has written a review to date. This is a big surprise for me because Dr. Duke's book is wonderful.
Dr. Duke (he has a Ph.D.) retired from the USDA where he worked as Chief of the Medicinal Plant Resources Laboratory for years. In retirement (he's age 72), he remains active in ReNuPeru, a medicinl herb garden in the Peruvian Amazon maintained by the Amazon Center for Environmental Education and Research. In other words, he has credentials in plant pharmaecology recognized by the U.S. Government.
Dr. Duke owns a six-acre farmette in Fulton Maryland where he raises medicinal/food plants. I discovered Duke in a book on herbalist gardens entitled, THE HERBALIST'S GARDEN, by Shatoiya and Richard de la Tour. Both books (Duke and de la Tour) were reviewed by a local garden expert in the Washington Post. The Post article and the de la Tour book contain beautiful photographs of Duke's garden but alas he has included no photographs in his own book (why I gave it 4 stars).
I've been growing and using herbs for over forty years (I drank Camomile tea and ate bean and barley soup in the 1960s), and I own a number of books on this subject. Dr. Duke's book on "anti-aging prescriptions" appeals to me because 1) I am older and the book meets my immediate needs, 2) the book is laid out by ailment or "challenge" not by herb. In othr words, I don't have to hunt for salient information.
For example, if you're worried about cracking and peeling skin you can turn to Section 22. 'Smooth Skin' and read about the various approaches, techniques, etc. you might use to improve your skin's health. I discovered the flaxseed oil I have been taking for symtoms of menopause is exactly what I need for skin health but I should buy a variant that includes Borage or Evening Primrose oil.
Duke has many helpful suggestions including eating what he calls the Paleolithic diet consisting of many servings of vegetables and fruits and fewer servings of meats, cheeses and other dairy items (I'm not eating grubs--nor does he recomend them). And, yes you've probably read about this diet--it's the official USDA recommended diet--but Duke's value-added information is the list of ingredient he pinpoints for health. He explains why prunes, plums and other dark fruit are good for you, and why beans other than soy beans make a difference. To begin your older years (50+) in good health, I recommend you read Dr. Duke's book and practice what he preaches.

It's OK but it is not great.......2002-09-08
I bought both "The Herbal Body Book" and her book "The Herbal Home Spa". I have tried several recipes from both books. Some work ok, but others are not worth the effort. For example, a cleansing lotion as thin as water ( no exaggeration), or a shampoo that left my hair feeling worse than before I washed. Not all recipes are bad, and some are downright fun to make and use. I don't regret these as a starter, but rather than buy the rest of her series, I will switch to another author.
It dosen't worth [it]!!!.......2002-06-17
Very few recipes compared to the same kind of books.Plus there is nothing new in her recipes. All is "dèja Vu" recipes.

Such as "Natural recipes for perfect skin"by Pierre Jean Cousin also 128 pages but full of recipes and informations, beautiful photos enclose.
Or "Herbal body book"by Jeanne Rose 400 pages real herbal body recipes VS this book only 128pages.

Pamper yourself!.......2000-01-19
So many of the recipes in Ms. Tourles great book have become staples in my beauty regime. The Minty Astringent is great in the hot summer weather to cool and refresh your complexion. The pH Restorer Facial Steam is wonderful for bringing a healthy glow to tired worn out skin. One of the first few books that I collected on the subject of make it yourself beauty products, I still refer to it very often.
Full of ideas that make great gifts........1999-12-11
Not only is this book full of natural and easy to make beauty concoctions, it's recipes often make great gift items. The book suggests some creative packaging options, and the creative person will be able to think of many more on their own. Some of the ingredients are a challenge to come by, but between the resources referenced in the book, and searching the Internet, you should be able to track most of them down.

Customer Reviews:
The Natural Beauty Book All Women ought to Keep.......2005-09-26
Indeed Jeanne Rose knows her herbal stuff from experience, gathered over more than thirty years as a professional herbalist. The 2000 edition that I got (the one described on this page) is awesome: there's a glossary of herbs, of pharmacology terms, of health conditions that can be helped with herbs. The author provides recipes for making different ointments and mixtures for beauty and health conditions but she also gives in her book enough information for the reader to actually mix up her own ingredients and create an original perfume, or mask or lotion. She knows how to impart her knowledge with generosity. It's a reference book and fun to read as well.
Wonderful book for the herb lover, and the body lover.......2000-04-07
I'm 14 years old, and am just discovering the world of herbs, and ofcosmetics. I found this book very useful in both areas, because of thewonderful descripitons, and the useful, simple recipies. Oh, also, the version I read was the 1976 version (from the library of course) so I imagine that this newly updated copy is even better!
Book Description
Jeanne Rose is one of America's best known herbalists and Kitchen Cosmetics is her most intimate guide to natural health and beauty. Over 100 of Jeanne's favorite recipes and tips provide safe and simple applications created by Jeanne for her own family's needs. Based on common kitchen and garden ingredients - from yogurt to berries to rosemary - these lotions, creams, and other moisturizers, masks, teas, toothpastes, deodorants, shampoos, and conditioners are easily prepared in the home. Shopping suggestions, herbal cosmetic techniques for the whole body, and fascinating herbal lore make Kitchen Cosmetics a valuable and charming guide to natural beauty and health care.
Since its publication in 1978, Kitchen Cosmetics has become the leading title in home preparation of natural cosmetics. It is used by apartment dwellers who buy herbs, gardeners who tend a few pots in sunny windows, and gardeners with spacious beds...a steadily growing number of people who want to 'take back' the pleasure of working with herbs themselves - and want more control over what the put on their hair, face, and body.
Customer Reviews:
Don't bother.......2007-05-13
I was soooooo disappointed with this book. It is not easy to follow, and you have to spend a lot of time to find something that might work for you. I loved her Herbs and Things, and used it a great deal. This book however, was to me scattered.
Caution against shampoo recipes.......2006-02-25
In general I like this book. Although it doesn't have a wide variety of recipes. Anyway, it is rather dated. For instance, I followed the recipes for shampoo. Yikes! Her amounts of tincture of benzoin in there made the shampoo stick to the measuring cup! And nevermind what it did to my hair (hey, I had an open mind). So maybe the way tincture of benzoin is made is different from how it was back then. I don't know, but head's up. This is the only natural bodycare book I have, but I hear there are better out there.
Kitchen Cosmetics by Jeanne Rose.......2004-03-20
This is a great book, very beautiful and easy to follow. My mother and I have been able to make the best home-made skin care products. The herbs are limited to 25 simple ones that I have been able to find and use. Some of them we grow. Great formulas, clean and easy. We love this book and are going to buy more of Jeanne Rose books.
Well past its prime........2000-03-17
Don't be misled by the attractive book cover. In comparison with current books on making natural skincare items, this one is moldy in both content and appearance. You'll get much better information and recipes from: 1) 'Make Your Own Cosmetics' by Neal's Yard Remedies. 2) 'Natural Bodycare' by Julia Meadows. 3) 'Natural Beauty at Home' by Janice Cox.
A wonderful starter book into making herbal cosmetics!.......1999-06-17
If you already incorporate herbs into your life, this book is wonderful for making your own cosmetics using items you probably already have in your kitchen. Definitely worth the price...I still refer to mine today!

Not for beginners.......2003-12-13
This book has a lot of great info and recipes, but if you are not an experinced soapmaker, you probably will not have the ingredients you need. First there are a lot of things you have to get at the grocery/drug store: distilled water, glycerine, corn meal, oatmeal, olive oil, baking soda, cornstarch, honey, vegetable oil, vodka, witch hazel, epsom salts, castor oil, etc. Then you have to get a lot of things from mail order or specialty stores, like essentail oils, jojoba oil, coconut oil, herbs, sea salts, sweet almond oil, apricot kernel oil, benzoin, beeswax, cosmetic clays. These items can get very expensive.
From a beginner's point of view, the recipes in this book can be overwhelming because they contain ingredients which are not commonplace. However, this book does offer an exceptional ingredient guide which carefully describes each one and its uses. The Mail Order Buyer's Guide found in the back of the book is also useful in locating and purchasing the hard to find ingredients.
The author divides her book into sections: Hand Care, Foot Care, and Skin Care. In each, she takes the time to carefully outline the resons behind many beauty problems, such as Athlete's Foot, Adult Acne, Brittle Nails, Eczema, etc. Learning what may cause the problems and how they can be resolved is a great reason to read the book.
If you are an experienced herbalist then the recipes found here can be a great addition to your already natural lifestyle. For beginners, take the time and spend the money if you are inclined to learn how to make your own home spa. This book successfully teaches how to achieve a natural approach to beautiful hair, skin, hands, and feet.

An impressive and thoroughly 'reader friendly' 259-page compendium of herbal medicine.......2007-06-09
In "Botanical Body Care: Herbs And Natural Healing For Your Whole Body", practicing herbalist, teacher, and nutritional consultant Karin C. Uphoff shows how anyone can increase their vitality, strengthen their immune system, relieve physical and psychological stress, prevent illness, and treat common ailments through the use of natural plants and thereby avoid the harmful side effects (and expense!) of conventional pharmaceuticals. "Botanical Body Care' shows how readily available herbs can be easily made into tinctures, extracts, salves, and flavorful teas which have a long and honored history as a general, effective natural remedy for a great many commonly encountered medical conditions. An impressive and thoroughly 'reader friendly' 259-page compendium of herbal medicine, "Botanical Body Care" is an invaluable addition to personal and community library Health & Medicine reference collections, and especially recommended reading for health practitioners, students of the healing arts, nutritionists, dietitians, and non-specialist general readers seeking to take better care of themselves and their families.
Wonderful book - highly recommended!.......2007-05-26
Crisp, intelligent, down to earth, practical - I find this to be a perfect balance between a lay person's book and something more academic. As a result, it's highly informative and yet easy to, er, digest, with lots of tips and tricks, thorough explanations of why things work the way they do, and fun recipes and other things to try. A rare integrated approach to health and healing. I would have this on my shelf for anyone wanting to stay healthy or dealing with a specific health issue - either wanting to try something outside of or in tandem with western medical practices. Lots of "old world" wisdom here. Highly recommended.
Botanical care with items you can actually find.......2007-02-04
A basic guide to using herbs for health purposes, this book contains many easy to make recipes for specific problems. The various body systems covered include intestinal, digestive, respiratory, urinary, reproductive, nervous, lymph, and the immune system. The author discusses each system, common problems and herbal recipes that can be used to treat various problems. A particularly interesting Appendix includes information on how to use herbs commonly found in most kitchens to benefit your health.
If you want a basic primer on using herbs that is not so complex as to make it impossible to comprehend and yet not so basic that it really is useless then this may be the book you are looking for. Author Karin Uphoff strikes a solid middle ground to make Botanical Body Care approachable to everyone from the complete novice to the intermediate level person interested in herbal recipes. Botanical Body Care is highly recommended to the home user interested in botanical remedies.
