In Natural Hormone Balance for Women, Beverly Hills obstetrician-gynecologist Uzzi Reiss makes it clear that he believes in hormone replacement therapy for women, but not the "chemicalized hormonal substitutes" usually prescribed. "I emphasize natural hormones that are precise replicas of your own hormones," he writes, which can increase energy and memory, decrease symptoms of menopause and PMS, improve skin and mood, and enhance sleep, sexuality, and well-being. But neither the widely used hormonal medications, such as estrogens derived from horse urine, nor the "natural" hormonal products derived from soy or yams replicate the hormones produced by a woman's body. Rather, he recommends a natural estrogen formula balanced with natural progesterone, both available through compounding pharmacies (with a doctor's prescription).
Dr. Reiss and talented cowriter Martin Zucker explain why, how, and when to use natural hormones. This is not a snappy, one-size-fits-all program--rather, you, with the involvement of your physician, learn how to analyze your needs and individualize your treatment for your own optimal hormonal balance. Reiss describes the benefits and uses of natural estrogen and progesterone, then discusses other natural hormones that might be helpful: testosterone, human growth hormone, DHEA, melatonin, and pregnenolone. This is a provocative book that's worth sharing with your doctor. --Joan Price

Great book!.......2007-01-31
This book was recommended to me by my doctor after I came in to the office with many, many things wrong with me. I felt like I had neglected so many things that it was hopeless and I couldnt do anything to change how i felt. I was so exhausted ALL THE TIME yet couldnt sleep at bed time, I was dizzy, cranky, anxious among other things - just sick of feeling like crap. This book is great and breaks everything down so easily so anyone could follow this program. I am very thankful for this book but it saddens me to think that my OB really should have been telling me this a long time ago!
Wouldn't be without this Reference Book!.......2007-01-19
I've had this book for over 3 yrs., and as I am now 53 and have clearly experienced many unpleasant menopausal symptoms, I can say unequivocally, that I would have gone crazy without Dr. Reiss' expertise on this subject.
I was able to educate myself and present my case to my own wellness physician, mapping out a hormonal strategy that works! How do I spell RELIEF? Bio-identical hormone therapy! We, as women, and also the men who love us, should thank such a pioneer in women's health for providing us with the information that will make our "best years" truly great.

Action is Key.......2007-10-10
I enjoyed this advice because unlike the mindless lazy wishing and narcissistic bent of 'The Secret' pap, this book illustrates how important action is in attaining dreams.
I also appreciate that James stresses how riches don't mean anyhting compared to souls and our true selves.
He himself has said the bulk of his words were heavily edited for The Secret video.
He makes great points and this is a highly valuable work.
The Science of Success.......2007-10-08
I have read and re-read this book over 10 times in the last 8 years! Excellent style for the text of the science of success. If you are tired of "feeling" your way to success James Ray breaks down the steps and mental disciplines needed to achieve your desires. I recommend this book to everyone wanting more out of their life.

Less than One Star would be better.......2007-10-06
Here we have yet another one of those dreary, drudging works which offers HOPE to the confused and the lacking. I found a relative of mine reading this item and asked to borrow it. After going through it, I came to the conclusion that this information is infantile to say the least. It is written to appeal to wide-eyed yearners who feel left out of the excitement and pleasures that life today seems to contain. Unfortunately for the yearners, there is absolutely NOTHING to be found between the covers of this book which will help them to reach their dreams in ANY way. Like eager kindergarten children, the hopeful readers will make serious attempts to follow various "Super Laws" ( Thou Shalt's and Thou Shalt Not's ) and the only glimmer of "success" they will ever experience from this exercise will be "success" in terms of how fantatically they adhere to these idiotic "Laws". "See mom! I'm following all the Laws!", "That's nice, Jimmy!"
The author claims to have researched "successful" individuals and is now providing the readers of his book with the "inside dope", the "standard formula" on how all these famous people managed to accomplish what they did in their lives. According to the author, its all so easy! All anyone needs to do is be aware of these various "Super Laws" responsible for the success of others, and then follow them! Success then becomes inevitable.
Well, this is simplistic in the extreme. No one can get inside another's thoughts or feelings, or even hope to grasp what the emotional/physical/psychological environment happened to be at any given time for another individual when that person managed to succeed at anything! The imbecility of copying the behavior of so-called "successful" people is exactly the same rubbish constantly pushed by the "You Can Have The Moon" types like Tony Robbins with their ridiculous concepts of "Just model what a successful person does and you'll succeed too" claptrap. This book is written with the same illogic.
I ask you to consider the following:
First;
If this author, Tony Robbins, and others of the same ilk were correct in terms of how they insist that people "succeed" in life ( model the successful and be successful too ), then where is the proof that it works in today's world? How many people have attended seminars, bought books and cassette tapes, and religiously adhered to the "modeling" principles and mysterious "laws" set before them? And out of this massive, teeming group of yearning believers, how many have actually SUCCEEDED? How many "overworld" types are there today who have every dream coming true, and who have openly stated that they must thank this or that book or seminar or cassette tape instructional set for getting them to the sublime state they now exist in?
Second:
Have you ever heard of the saying which goes; "What you see is what you get"? In other words, what has this author GOT? What do you see in him? Have you done any sort of research on HIM as a successful person before deciding to put your trust in what he claims will bring success to you if you purchase his book? Does he have the world in his hip pocket? Is he wealthy? And if he isn't, why not?! After all, he has uncovered and revealed the "Super Laws" of success in the Universe!!! If ANYONE should be succeeding at every turn and in the greatest ways possible, it should be THIS AUTHOR!!!!! But IS he doing so? If he has ANY significant wealth and material ease, did it come to him by following these "Super Laws" of the Universe, or did it come like wealth came to Tony Robbins? That is, did it come from SELLING HOPE and from nothing else? Where do you suppose someone like Robbins be without his Snake Oil maneuvers of offering hope to the hopeless?
Folks, this sort of sucker bait, snake oil routine has been going on in one form or another for literally centuries all across the Western world. People keep buying into it, and the only "success" it provides is to the SELLERS, not the buyers. Generation after generation, there is always a certain portion of the populace who never wake up and who are always willing to put their trust and belief in these empty promises of astounding achievement though the following of "LAWS" of some sort or another. Well, here's a "LAW" that will certainly bring magnificent success -
SELL HOPE THOUGH INFORMATION CLAIMING TO REVEAL MYSTERIOUS, ALL-POWERFUL "UNIVERSAL LAWS" !
Do this one thing and YOU too can succeed, make millions, and achieve your fondest material dreams!
Best Book I've Read in a Long Time.......2007-09-10
I like the concepts shared in the book so much, I bought several more copies to give to friends. I also bought and read the books of the people that he talked about in his book. It has been a chain reaction of books. I highly reccomend read it.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Customer Reviews:
The best gift to yourself and to others.......2007-09-06
I am a major fan of the hardcover edition of this book and plan to order paperbacks as gifts for my friends. Author, Abby Seixas, tackles the subject crucial to all of us living in this culture of rush: how to slow down and live more effectively, enjoyably, and unselfishly. She provides practical tools on how to quiet your racing thoughts, live in the moment, and realize the life you were meant to live. Too often, we are slaves to unnecessary stress which limits the lives we were meant to lead. This book will help you not only to stop and smell the roses but to feed and nurture the whole garden that is your life. The price and the time you will spend on this book will be returned to you 10 times over in the rewards you will reap in your daily life.
One of my favorite books I've read this year.......2007-08-31
Abby Seixas' warm, wonderful guide left me in tears: tears of gratitude and recognition. I have four children, co-own a business with my husband, homeschool my two older children, and recently launched a second business: my life is full. I began "Finding the Deep River Within" on a day when I was exhausted, overwhelmed, feeling inside out, and wondering how I could make the various pieces of my life work.
Reading her book was like talking with a wise older sister or aunt. As women in the 21st century, we have so many opportunities. And yet those endless opportunities can create their own stress: If we can do everything, and we have endless choices, then how do we pick and choose to create a fulfilling, passionate life?
This is not a how to organize your life guide. It's a how to find yourself---your true self, your spirit---guide.
I read voraciously, at least a book or two a week, and Finding the Deep River Within was one of my favorite books I read this year: it's that good.
Great book.......2007-03-08
I love this book. It has practical advice for helping women to evaluate their lives and find balance. It is not another "how to organize" your life book. It truly invites one to take stock of what is important from inside out. It is a great resource for me as a retreat director.
Life doesn't have to be fast to be fun!.......2006-10-28
"A deep river" is a marvelous alternative metaphor for living that feels like endless "white water." While Seixas' advice to take time for yourself, befriend your feelings, and do what you love is not new, her written expression is compelling--even enchanting. For a more thoroughly Christian perspective on slowing down and living delight, see Addicted to Hurry: Spiritual Strategies for Slowing Down and Holy Play: The Joyful Adventure of Unleashing Your Divine Purpose.
Great Guidance for a More Meaningful Life.......2006-10-05
The six practices Abby Seixas describes in Finding the Deep River Within contain sound psycho-spiritual skills that bring me home to myself and provide excellent guidance for my clients. The great value of this book is that Seixas has laid out these essential skills in a coherent, well-organized way that's easy to understand and inviting to use. Her writing is direct and intimate, and her message is desperately needed to create balance in our demanding world. Valuable wisdom for enriching one's life, and a treasure to give to your women friends.

Book Description
Since ancient times humans have felt intuitively that emotions and health are linked, and recently there has been much popular speculation about this notion. But until now, without compelling evidence, it has been impossible to say for sure that such a connection really exists and especially how it works. Now, that evidence has been discovered.A thrilling scientific detective story, The Balance Within tells how researchers finally uncovered the elusive mind-body connection and what it means for our health. In this beautifully written book, Dr. Esther Sternberg, whose discoveries were pivotal in helping to solve this mystery, provides first hand accounts of the breakthrough experiments that revealed the physical mechanisms - the nerves, cells, and hormones - used by the brain and immune system to communicate with each other. She describes just how stress can make us more susceptible to all types of illnesses, and how the immune system can alter our moods. Finally, she explains how our understanding of these connections in scientific terms is helping to answer such crucial questions as "Does stress make you sick?" "Is a positive outlook the key to better health?" and "How do our personal relationships, work, and other aspects of our lives affect our health?"A fascinating, elegantly written portrait of this rapidly emerging field with enormous potential for finding new ways to treat disease and cope with stress, The Balance Within is essential reading for anyone interested in making their body and mind whole again.

A must read for anyone who has experienced an autoimmune attack.......2007-01-22
This well written & interesting book became my bible in learning how stress can influence and/or cause an autoimmune attack. Understanding the connection between mind and body, and learning to cope with stress, is paramount to a complete recovery, so well explained by Dr. Sternberg.
a fascinating look at stress and the immune system.......2006-04-23
This book is useful for students, scientists, and those who are otherwise interested in integrative medicine. Sternberg augments her explanation of the stress-immune connection with interesting and relevant research studies. I found it useful as a student studying neuroscience and as an individual trying to understand and manage stress in my life.
Solving The Mind-Body Conundrum.......2002-12-12
I am a writer who is currently at work on a book on my living through colon cancer. I was diagnosed at age 47 with Duke's C-3 colon cancer. Because of the early onset of my disease, I was three years too young to be considered for routine colon cancer screening, which doctors are supposed to offer to patients when they reach age 50. I was lucky. Even with one year of chemotherapy (due to minor lymph node involvement) medical textbooks and doctors said my chances of surviving five years (a five year colon cancer survivor is considered "cured") were about 35 percent. Now, seven years later, I can say that Esther Sternberg's work validates some key elements of the survival strategy I developed for myself that links health and wellness and emotions.
Sternberg flies in the face of conventional medical wisdom by providing proof that stress can make you sick. She provides evidence that the immune system can be trained, citing the work of Bob Ader and Nick Cohen. And she offers evidence that nerve chemicals or hormones can affect immune-cell function in a physiological way.
This is ironic considering that when you ask a psychiatrist or even a psychopharmachologist how the latest generation of SSRI anti-depression/anti-anxiety drugs (Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Celexa etc.) work, the answer is that they are not exactly sure.
The medical establishment in the US tends to hive off the debate about health and emotions (the mind-body connection) to the area of alternative medicine. New age healing and some of the Eastern approaches tend to overlook the scientific connection. Sternberg taps history and science to frame the issue and if it were simpled down to the level of a mass market audience her book would be a best seller.
Through the Eyes of a Sensitive Human Being.......2002-02-19
Brilliant scientific exploration of the mind-body connection expressed in compelling, animated realism. I enjoyed this delightful learning experience. Dr. Sternberg not only demonstrates outstanding knowledge and expertise in the field of psychoneuroimmonology, but she does so through the eyes of a sensitive, caring human being. A true inspiration to read many times over. Especially recommended for anyone who is looking for a way to enhance their health and well-being....
Bold and Daring, Advanced Knowledge!.......2002-01-28
Dr. Esther Sternberg from the outset tells us that she wrote this book "out of a question" that "seemed ostracized from the rest of the scientific community." Clearly, it seems that the information in "The Body Within" is a daring challenge to present new brain-immune connection information to the lay public, and is determined to not let it stagnate only among the doctoral elite. I found all 11 chapters fascinating and richly detailed, gloriously free of slanted opinions and filled with highly intelligent questions. All 250 pages inform, with its interesting anecdotes and illustrations, and my gratitude goes out to Dr. Sternberg for ensuring that some of us, even though we do not have a "Ph.D" attached to our name, are nonetheless able to grasp concepts as the workings of the brain, the immune system and the role of various hormones and neurotransmitters.
"The Balance Within" is solidly founded in irrefutable facts "collected from rigorously performed experiments." It is a real treat to read about such things as Chapter 5, "It's a Two-Way Street: The Immune System Talks to the Brain and the Brain Talks Back" and Chapters 6 and 7, "When the Brain-Immune Communication Breaks Down" and "Can Stress Make you Sick?" I could easily spoil the conclusions of this book, which I dare not out of pure respect for Dr. Sternberg, especially when she so adeptly investigates such ideas as "Can Believing Make You Well?" Gradually the walls between the public and the scientific community are crumbling down, allowing us to make up our own minds and deciding what is right for our own bodies. This book is groundbreaking, indispensable and should not be out of your hands for another second. You may encounter resistance at first, as the author put it, "Whenever a new field comes into being, it comes up against the older dogmas. So the resistance that we felt was real and steeped in traditions going as far back as Galileo, Copernicus, and beyond...Whenever one tries to change prevailing opinion, resistance is inevitable..." Esther, I want to party with you, sister. A little less I talk, a little more I listen. I'm taking a page from your book!
Book Description
In this inspirational work, best-selling author and lecturer
Wayne W. Dyer shows you how to restore balance in your life by offering nine principles for realigning your thoughts so that they correspond to your highest desires.
Imagine a balance scale with one end weighted down to the ground, and the other endâfeaturing the objects of your desiresâsticking up precariously in the air. This scale is a measurement of your thoughts. To restore the same balance that characterizes everything in our universe, you have to take up the weighty thoughts so that they match up to your desires.
The seasons reflect the overall harmony of life. For example, winter passes and the blossoms emerge. This is balanced by a need to have the trees rest, so autumn arrives on time and helps the trees ready themselves for another period of repose. This book is dedicated to the idea that we’re a vital component of this creative process and have within ourselves the wherewithal to create all that we want if we recognize and revise out-of-balance thoughts.

Beautiful Book.......2007-09-01
I highly recommend the purchase of this beautiful book by Dr.Wayne Dyer.
It really is a nice looking book and great for gift giving. It is easy to read and most importantly meaningful devine messages to keep life in balance.
Fantastic principles.......2007-08-23
I am still reading this book, I am on the 8th principle at this point. But am so impressed with how clearly the message comes through that I have ordered 2 more copies for my daughters for Christmas. These are messages that I have heard or read many times but the way they are written in this book clarifies them and/or gives a new slant on them, gives a new understanding. I also like that the book is small and can be easily re-read in a short time. Another great product from Wayne Dyer.
Very Nice.......2007-07-30
This book was very easy for me to understand. I felt a wonderful feeling about life at such a very dishearting time in my life.I didn't feel so alone; and that, maybe if I let it,eveything will be ok! I will want to read it again and again to remind myself. I have a very loving spirit that gets caught up in ugliness, which I allow to take me over.I prefer not to be that way. This book helps me let the ugly go. I already try to do that everyday, but this book reminds me that I dont even have to try,"just be" "just being" is weightless, happy, thankful, loving and true. Everything I want to be.
absorb these pages.......2007-05-08
Another beautiful book by Dr. Dyer. I absolutely love this book. Not only does it offer sound advice to live your days by, but every page is a work of art. I wanted to hang every page up on the wall!! I had to settle for keeping it on the coffee table.

Must read.......2007-08-24
I have been in perimenopause for about a year now and sufferring miserably. I have been to three different Obgyn's most of whom wanted to immediately put me on some sort of hormone replacement therapy either on the pill or on heavy doses of prometrium (a progesterone steriod) or do a hysterectomy, all this without doing any testing of my hormone levels. I wanted to know if there were any natural alternatives to any of these suggestions--they bascially looked at me as if I were a nut job and said no==not that they knew of--I went in search of some answers and found Dr Lee's book. It is clear and concise and incredibly informative. It assumes the reader wants to take responsibility for her own healthcare and wants to find a doctor to partner with that has the same assumption. It gives you the information and scientific evidence for putting your body into hormonal balance naturally and through a balanced diet supplemented by vitamins herbs and exercise and supplemental hormones. It does so without the bias of alleged scientific evidence backed by self interested pharmaceutical companies. He does not endorse any company or product but he was the pioneer in promoting progesterone cream as a means to hormonal balance and makes a strong case through his own practice in terms of the benefits of this approach. There has been some confusion by other reviewers of his book about what he is promoting so I want to clear that up.He does not promote bio-identical drugs which are those that are made by pharmaceutical companies and mimic natural ingredients and need to patented by pharmeceutical companies in order to be sold. He does promote the use of progesterone cream which is not a bio-identical as defined above. Dr Carolyn Dean who has written a few books on hormonal balance does a better job of explaining this in her books, Hormone Balance and Menopause Naturally. To summarize, this book is a great introduction into the bodily and emotionally changes that women go through in their premenopausal years and how to treat these changes naturally.
What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Premenopause.......2007-07-28
This book will become my bible for the next 10 years or so. We all understand that we aren't living in an extremely healthy environment, but no one shows you what to do about it or even lets you know why the environment is harmful to us. This book explains everything and lets you know that you're not going crazy!

All about balance.......2007-07-16
The overall message in this book is that maintaining good health as the years go by, is about keeping all aspects of your life in balance. Being female and in the premenopause category as defined by the authors, I found much in the book that I as well as my close female friends could identify with, both in terms of symptoms resulting from lack of balance, and the reasons why these symptoms arise. As a physician myself, I wholeheartedly agree with the authors' stance that these symptoms arising from a lack of balance in one's life cannot be solved by radical surgery and/or prescription hormones.
The information about substances that we use every day which can disturb the delicate biochemical balance that makes us function at an optimal level, was very eye-opening, and even a little frightening. Most people are unaware of the hidden dangers in a seemingly innocuous bottle of nail polish and nail polish remover.
The recommendations made are easily within the reach of any woman who is interested in embarking on the quest for balance. Although the use of the natural hormone progesterone is advocated, the authors state very clearly that this will only work in the long run if measures to achieve balance in other aspects of one's life (e.g. diet. stress management) are also implemented at the same time. It really is all about balance in all aspects of one's life. This is a good book for women who are not satisfied with the answers and solutions proposed by conventional western medicine to their very real problems at this stage of life.
Please Be Careful - I Learned The Hard Way.......2007-02-03
Bio-identical hormones are not all they are cracked up to be. They have serious, dangerous impacts on the human body. Please, if you are going to try these, do your homework first. A growing number of women are experiencing lethal side effects. Some don't make it out the other side. I am one of the lucky ones - I survived the blood clots in my legs and two near-fatal, year-long illnesses connected with use of "natural" progesterone. Since that time, I have been contacted by scores of women who have suffered due to use of these hormones. I hope this information will be helpful to someone else, too. Please, safeguard your health - no one else is going to do it for you.
A Must Read For Any Woman..........2007-02-01
I devoured this book in 2 hours! It was very informative and also a reassuring "person" for any woman who wants to know more about premenopause and menopause. I am definately going to re-read this and highlight any area that I can use (I'm sure the book will be filled with color)! The book answered alot of my questions regarding synthetic hormones and natural progesterone.

Are you a woman between 35 and 50 experiencing PMS, migraine headaches, sudden weight gain, fatigue, irritability, tender or lumpy breasts, memory loss, fibroids, or cold hands and feet? If so, you may be experiencing symptoms of premenopause. Even if you're a decade or more away from menopause, your hormones may already be out of balance, usually caused by an excess of estrogen and a deficiency of progesterone, say the authors of What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Premenopause. John Lee, M.D., is a well-known advocate of the benefits of natural progesterone and the author of What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Menopause. Jesse Hanley, M.D., adds sensitivity to the emotional and spiritual aspects of premenopause. The authors recommend natural progesterone cream to balance your hormones, eliminate premenopausal symptoms, and make you feel better. They also discuss the dangers of xenohormones--substances not found in nature that have hormonal effects--frequently found in pesticides, solvents, plastics, and hormone-treated meat. The book presents common symptoms of premenopause with suggested natural treatments (progesterone cream, diet, vitamins, and herbs) and substances to avoid, plus additional chapters on diet and exercise. Many case studies help to bring the information into perspective. If you are premenopausal (or close to someone who is), this is a valuable resource. --Joan Price

The subtitle is more pertinent: Balance Your Hormones and Your Life from Thirty to Fifty.......2006-02-24
I found this book to be very informative. It really focuses on how your body needs and uses hormones. It addresses the years 30 - 50. There is a big difference between "Premenopause" and "Perimenopause". Pre simply means the years before you reach the point of menopause. It explains how you can balance your hormones and the dangers of too much estrogen vs. progesterone. It was surprising to me just how important it is to balance your hormones. It has helped me tremendously.
Very Good Resource.......2006-01-15
I have read most of Dr Lee's books and all have been very helpful and I found much of the information to be accurate. Anyone replacing or supplementing hormones should have their levels checked and Dr Lee states this clearly in all his books. I have adrenal insufficiency, Hashimoto's autoimmune thyroid disease, irritable bowel disease, and myofascial pain syndrome. I take physiologic doses of most of the major hormones, the bioidentical form. I have also read numerous other books on hormones by other authors, many have something to offer to the reader. I use a bioidentical progesterone cream prepared by a compounding pharmacy and it makes me feel much better. I use it at night and it aids my sleep and raises my body temperature. It is an overall mood elevator for me.
I found many of the comments made by the readers with unfavorable reviews inaccurate, I think they are not careful readers. Dr Lee addresses many of their complaints. For example when first using progesterone cream symptoms of estrogen excess can be amplified. He also notes the symptoms of excess progesterone and recommends that hormone levels should be tested and even tells you where you can have a saliva test done on your own.
I have had my hormone levels measured through serum and saliva and have found that it depends upon which hormone is being tested as to the correlation between the two tests.(THyroid hormone cannot be measured in saliva) The problem with blood work is that especially for hormones which must be carried through the blood by a protein carrier the amount measured is the total amount of the hormone ( bound and unbound) and is not available for use by the body. Only the unbound amount or 'free' hormone is biologically active. Thyroid and testoserone can be measured as Free T4, Free T3 and Free Testosterone. These test are more expensive and often doctors do not order them unless you ask for them. He explains this in his book.
Dr Lee's book on Breast Cancer is a must read for all women simply for the information it presents on bone scans and the role and function of estrogen. All of the information is not up to date however but it is a good starting point. Tumors in breast tissue can be responsive to both estrogen and progesterone and sometimes to both. There is no easy answer.
The doctor does not do much discussion of thyroid function and that is a shame because it is often the smoking gun behind most autoimmune diseases and endocrine dysfunctions. There are many good books out there, but a book is not going to diagnose you. Anyone looking for information should start by looking up the studies cited by the authors in their books and reading some of them, or do a google. I obtain much of my information from the internet, do a search and often several Medline articles will turn up.
For anyone who is having difficulty being diagnosed or finding a doctor willing to listen I highly recommend the Broda O Barnes Foundation. Go to their website and contact them. They are an endocrine research foundation. They were able to diagnose me and literally gave me my life back. I cannot say enough about them.
For other reading I would recommend:
Adrenal dysfunction- Dr McK Jeffries Safe Uses of Cortisol
Thyroid Disease- Dr Barnes- Hypothyroidism the Unsuspected Illness
Ridha Arem- The Thyroid Solution- but discount his information on which thyroid medication to take, he is clearly biased toward synthroid, however his descriptions of the psychological manifestations are very good.
Dr David Brownstein- Overcoming Thyroid Disorders
Dr David Brwonstein- The Miracle of Natural Hormones- both books give good information on bioidentical hormones and reference levels along with case studies
Overall Health
Dr Carolyn Dean- The Miracle of Magnesium--very easy to read and good book, I take a high dose of magnesium daily and my doctor monitors my magnesium in red blood cell, it has really helped improve my irritable bowel
Dr Mary Enig- Know Your Fats-Excellent book on lipid(fats), explains saturated and unsaturated, trans, where they are found, the composition of each. It can be a little technical but for those who want to take charge of their health this is a must.
Book Description
Re-released on the heels of Al Gores #1 New York Times bestseller, An Inconvenient Truth, comes the paperback edition of his classic bestseller, Earth in the Balance. First published in 1992, it helped place the environment on the national agenda; now, as environmental issues move front-and-center in the public consciousness, the time is right to reflect deeply on the fate of our planet and commit ourselves to its future. While An Inconvenient Truth closely examines one menace to our environmentglobal warmingEarth in the Balance takes a broader approach, focusing on the threats that everyday choices pose to our climate, water, soil, and diversity of plant and animal life. A passionate, lifelong defender of the environment, Gore describesin brave and unforgettable termshow human actions and decisions can endanger or safeguard the vulnerable ecosystem that sustains us.

An OK read..........2007-10-03
So this book was written in 1990...things have changed a lot since then - some for better some for worse. So keep that in mind while reading this book. But some good facts in the book though from extensive research. That is the selling point for this. However, I think the presentation and writing style made it a little difficult to maintain focus. I might have felt differently had I read this in 1990.
Earth In The Balance.......2007-09-25
Incredibly informative . Puts perspective on the Earth's history of climate change and how it affects civilizations.
Eye-Opener!!!.......2007-09-15
This book is an easy reader, meaning that it was easy to follow and understand. The need for more informative books like this one could definitely help inform the world how crucial it is to put pressure on the Amercian government, United Nations, and other countries to take reponsibilty for their part in deteriating the ozone layer.
Everyone should read this book.......2007-08-23
I was looking for something definitive on the natural environment and our destruction of it because there are so many different publications on the subject, some a bit theatrical and often too specific on a certain area or problem. This book is thorough, cold and to the point regarding the undeniable truth about the effect the human race is having on the planet. I was highly impressed with the detail provided and with how a great range of different causes and effects were brought together into perspective. This is the most important and the best book I have read in a long time.
Earth in the Balance.......2007-07-29
Al Gore's Earth in the Balance is no less than an eye-opener for any reader of any political loyalty. You cannot question the seriousness of the environmental crisis anymore.

Jennifer Louden encourages you to assemble and draw on personal rituals, journals and sanctuaries that can add comfort and breathing space to your life. Some are obvious (herbal baths, flowers) or seem too silly, New Age, or time-consuming to tickle every fancy (blow bubbles in traffic jams, chant affirmations). Many more seem sublime and creative. But that's her point: pick and choose what works best for you, but do take some actions to make your life happier.

I am another who bought *another* copy of this book...someone borrowed mine and I never got it back. Sometimes we need reminded of the little things. This is full of ways to do that and some may sound silly but it works. Have it on gift lists for a few people I know.
writing instructor for healing and self-discovery.......2005-02-28
I keep buying this book over and over - I have given it to friends in crises and at turning points. I can't say enough good things about The woman's comfort book. It is a resource that you will never tire of!!
A treat!.......2003-05-20
I must have given this book half a dozen times as a gift to friends or family members who were in need of a little nurturing, or who needed an excuse to spend a little more time on themselves. This book has dozens of ideas for activities to help you through a day, and even a little categorized index to look for a project based on how you're feeling at the moment.
A real treasure! Give it to a loved one by itself, or in combination with a nice journal or blank book and a couple of fun pens (I recommend purple), and she will know you care about her. Better yet, buy one for yourself.
Wonderful book!.......2000-03-29
This book helped me through a very difficult time in my life. It offers simple ways to learn to treat yourself well. Often women don't give themselves the time they deserve---this book definitely helps. Every woman should own a copy of this book.
Everyone ought to have this book!.......1999-11-18
This book was referred to me about 6 years ago by my psychologist I was seeing at the time. It is the most wonderful book I have ever owned. Guidance on how to comfort your self, mind, and soul from what you will need to get started, whether it is a candle, bubble bath, etc. To how to do the comforting! I have given a copy to all of my girlfriends! (I highly recommend all of Ms. Louden's books) Enjoy!
