If you eat it, you'll find information on it here. This 2001 fifth edition of the popular Nutrition Almanac includes updated nutritional composition of close to 1,000 foods, including 35 different cheeses, 25 legumes, 71 fruits and fruit juices, and 17 cuts of chicken. (Prepared foods are not included.) The tables are in bigger, bolder print than the fourth edition, a great improvement for those of us with aging eyes.

Despite the title, this is not strictly a nutrition resource. Author Lavon Dunne also includes brief overviews of 15 alternative therapies, whether or not they're related to nutrition, with resources for more information. However, Dunne does not list the Web sites for any of the resources--a defect surprising in a 2001 edition. When Nutrition Almanac's first edition appeared in 1973, little was known about the connection between nutrition and disease. In this edition, Dunne lists 68 health conditions, from abscess to vaginitis, and explains how you can prevent or treat the condition through food choices and alternative therapies such as herbs, homeopathy, aromatherapy, Ayurvedic medicine, Chinese medicine, bodywork, and mind-body therapy. --Joan Price

This book is an educational tool on how to take care of your body with foods and nutrition. It shows how preventative measures that food and vitamins can do to your life. Read and live by it!

4 out of 5 stars Don't buy this book if you are looking for a Calorie Counter.......2006-07-17

Don't buy this book if you are looking for a Calorie Counter. This book is a good reference for a Nutritionist or Professional Practitioner, but not for every-day use for diet management.

If you are trying to manage your diet, you will do better with a pocket sized or handy calorie counter book, like

If you need hard data on foods, relationship between exercise, diet and health, information on treatments, and scientific basics for preventing illness through proper nutrition, you may find this book useful.

In my opinion the 3rd edition seems to have more detailed and useful information than this 4th edition of the book. It caught my attention that the book has kept the same title, but the authors have changed from the previous editions.

If you are looking for a detailed reference on vitamins, minerals, and supplements (which this book doesn't cover properly), you may find the "Encyclopedia of Nutritional Supplements: The Essential Guide for Improving Your Health Naturally" an interesting complement for this book.

2 out of 5 stars Fifth Edition, yet still incomplete........2004-12-22

I've used the Nutrition Almanac, Third Edition, for years. This 'new' addition has very few updates compared to the third. It feels like it's written by someone working strictly with Western Medicine, even though it does give a person direction to some Natural treatments for the listed ailments. Also the book does not go too deeply into describing any vitamin or mineral.

On the positive side, the Table of Food Composition is nice to use, even though it is incomplete. And the layout of the book is quite nice, making it easy to use compared to smaller books.

1 out of 5 stars Should change the name.......2001-11-07

This book is about half the size and has about half the information contained in the fourth edition of book with the same name. Get the fourth edition from the same publishers...get much more value for your dollar...and your health!

1 out of 5 stars Is there science hiding in here?.......2001-11-04

I bought this book based upon the Amazon reader recommendations I found here. Now I feel obligated to set the record straight.

While parts of this book are thorough, with lots of hard numbers [though it's difficult to figure out what they mean in a practical sense, and the charts are not lined to assist in their reading], it is also riddled with new age foolishness as directly presented as fact as RDA recommendations -- including homeopathy, aroma therapy, etc. The book's organization leaves me with questioning its entire content. It is also not nearly as complete as I might have hoped in listing nutritional content, leaving out more unusual fruits and vegetables, and glossing over different cuts of meat as largely the same.

It also gives far out of date [at least 20 years?] recommendations for treatment of various diseases and maladies. The treatments I'm aware of, again raise questions about the others.

I will continue my search for thorough -- and scientific, a.k.a. proven, not just testimonial and/or based upon one flawed study -- nutrition elsewhere.

2 out of 5 stars Smaller Book with Less Info than 4th Edition.......2007-08-02

When I ordered this book, I was anticipating giving away my old 4th edition for a new one with improved information. NOT SO!

The tables, the heart and soul of the book, have fewer foods and not more than the 4th edition. In a display of ignorant cost cutting, Carb counts for grains such as rice are given per cup of RAW not cooked product - same for macaroni whereas the 4th edition gives raw and cooked values. This alone makes it not worth the money but scattered throughout are foods that were there for 4th edition but are now gone.

The publisher probably saved money by eliminating pages but I can no longer recommend this book to friends; I advise them to not buy it but get a copy of the 4th edition instead.

The first three editions of Nutrition Almanac sold more than 2.5 million copies. The 494-page fourth edition is expanded and updated, with new information to answer your questions and help you plan your personal nutritional program. "Nutrition is the relationship of foods to the health of the human body," explain the Kirschmanns (daughter and father), and they cover every aspect of how food relates to health. A detailed section on nutrients, for example, describes each vitamin and mineral, how it is absorbed and stored, dosage and toxicity, deficiency effects and symptoms, beneficial effect on ailments, and research findings. Another section offers 175 pages of common ailments and stressful conditions that may be related to nutrition, and which nutrients, exercise, herbs, and homeopathic remedies may be beneficial for each. A shorter chapter on herbs summarizes the medicinal uses of 70 herbs. The book also includes 73 pages of extensive nutritional information about common foods, showing how they help meet the RDA for each nutrient for both babies and adults. It is surprising in a book as up-to-date as this one that the authors choose to include height/desirable-weight charts, which are thought by experts to be outdated and irrelevant to health. Otherwise, this is a reference book you'll use often if you care about tracking and improving your nutrition. --Joan Price

Book Description

The three previous editions of this broadly popular reference have brought simple, sensible, and accurate nutrition information to an eager audience of health-conscious readers. This edition continues the high standards set by its forebears, offering sound, down-to-earth advice on health and nutrition in an easygoing style. As before, this book aims to empower readers to take charge of their own health. Illnesses can be prevented, say the authors, through knowledge and use of proper nutrition. They call on an increasing body of scientific evidence to back their arguments that vitamin and mineral supplements can also be effective tools in disease prevention and cure. Remedies such as herbal medicine and alternative treatments including homeopathy are also explored. Tables and charts give accurate nutrition data on most common foods.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensable!.......2006-05-08

I bought this book at the local bookstore after looking at other books in the same area. I have only read a few articles - however, I USE THE FOOD COMPOSITION TABLES CONSTANTLY! This is Section IX - Table of Food Composition, starting on page 389. The authors give 35 elements in each food (after measure and weight) - starting with calories, protein, numerous vitamins and minerals, and the 8 essential amino acids. If you're trying to understand which foods contain the most of a certain element, this is great! This (or something like it) is a must-have for dealing with various diets! I use this all the time to look up vegetables, fruits, beans, meats, etc.

1 out of 5 stars Gave this book away..........2006-01-13

This book was the most difficulty, unfriendly read for me. It's full of tables and scientific stuff that I couldn't read or refer to easily. I ended up giving it away which is a shame, but what's the point of collecting so much information if it's so unappealing to read and ultimately unreadable? They really need to work on improving this, then again, it's an almanac - perhaps the expectations for a pleasurable read should be dim.

5 out of 5 stars Nutrition Almanac by Dunne.......2004-06-17

This book contains a wealth of nutritional information directed
to the health-conscious consumer. There are specific protocols
pertinent to the back, headaches, depression and a multiplicity
of disease processes and conditions. For instance, back pain
may be managed with Vitamin C, bioflavinoids, Calcium and
Magnesium (Mg. ) Depression may be managed with Dl-Phenlalamine, B-complex, Vitamin C, Iron (Fe) , SAM (e), Folic Acid,
B1, B6 and Vitamin B 12. Licorice, ginger and cayenne may be utilized for depressive states. The aromas "Melissa",
" Creeping Hysop" & "Frankincense" may be utilized for optimal
effect. Deep-tissue massage and chiropractic are also helpful
for depression. Diabetes may be managed with GTF chromium,
Co Q10 enzymes, Vitamins C and E, B6 and B12. Camelia sinensis
tea is known to reduce blood sugar. Infections are helped by
Vitamin A. Biofeedback has been known to help the bladder.
Garlic, Vitamin C, Calcium and Magnesium also help with bladder
issues. The work has a wealth of information directed to the
health-conscious consumer. This information would be hard to
replicate if you tried to do it on your own. It would take
months of plowing through the Journal of the Lancet to duplicate
the protocols set forth in this volume. It is well worth the
price charged.

1 out of 5 stars A book for patrons of fast foods, frozen & canned foods.......2003-03-18

I was so disappointed with the contents of the food composition section of this book that I sent it back for a refund. If you want to know true food values this is not for you. If, however you eat food from Arby's, MacDonald's,Kentucky Fried Chicken, etc., they are listed here in alphabetical order by corporation name. You can also find products from Campbell's, Swanson, etc. also listed alphabetically by corporation. There was one page devoted to vegetables. Not for those looking for basic nutrition information.

    1 out of 5 stars Bodybuilding???.......2001-11-08

I bought this book expecting to find useful information about nutrition for all sports as well as seeing at least one regimen from an accomplished cyclist. This book emphasized power sports and was not what I have come to expect from Dr. Burke.

    5 out of 5 stars I Was Surprised...This is an Excellent Book........2001-08-09

...It was pretty well buried and anonymous. For these reasons I thought I was probably taking a big chance in buying this book, and that ultimately, I would be disappointed. To the contrary, I have been pleasantly surprised. I still don't get why this isn't a runaway bestseller for athletes, but here's my take on the book. Pros: Extensive information on Carbs, Proteins, Amino Acids, Fats, Water, Vitamins, Minerals, Electolytes, Supplements and even ergogenic Herbs (there is no info on steroids). The strength, I find, in this book is its authoratative tone, and drilling down to reveal esoteric facts. The authoratative tone isn't just evident in the language [the book having been very well edited], but in the knowledge presented. As a strength athlete (bodybuilder) I already know some lesser known facts about nutrition. To have those lesser known facts presented to me in this book makes me trust all the other information in the book that I didn't know. We're not talking about fads or unproven, hyped supplements, but reliable info on which supplements are likely to help, and at what doses. The high-profile supplements are covered (e.g., creatine, ribose, tribulus terrestris, MSM, NADH, HMB, and many, many more), but in a way that is neither pro- nor anti-supplement. You get fair, unbaised opinion on whether the supplement works or not, with case studies cited. There's also an excellent glossary. And there's a very useful website appendix to further your investigations. Lastly, reference sources are cataloged. On the Con side: This is a nit, but there's a section on Who's Who in Sports Nutrition. I disagree with some of the entries, and didn't feel everyone had been covered, but, by nature, this is bound to be subjective; you may find it's just perfect. Also, there's advice sprinkled throughout the book that borders on a recommendation for certain supplements by brand name. I honestly don't think this is because of any tie-ins with the publisher or authors...mostly because they mention numerous and competing brands...but it is a little off-putting at first; at least until you let your guard down and accept it as honest opinion. Anyway, this is a tremendous resource for sports nutrition, and I especially recommend it for my brothers and sisters (there is much on female-specific nutrition) in the iron game. Naturals, in particular, should run...don't walk, to get this book.

4 out of 5 stars PLan 4 sucess in the gym.......1999-12-03

BOOK REVIEW: Avery's Sports Nutrition Almanac

Every day in school everyone is talking about going to the gym, buying supplements at GNC and the Vitamin shop. Looking good by having a solid body has taken over the minds of adolesents. High school kids today are obssesed with getting "ripped" or "huge". Some kids that are athletes take good supplents and "hit the weights" on a normal scheduale, On the other hand, other kids who do not have a clue spend lots of money on athletic supplements they see on TV, hear about from others, and just get jealous about the "ripped" kids. Those are the ones that usually get hurt and give up anyway. I am also part of that group that likes to improve my muscle tone. I saw a book called, Avery's SPORTS Nutrition Almanac written by E. Burke, and D. Gastelu. It is a basic reference manual that offers tips, guidelines, and advice for a wide range of sports-nutrition subjects. Because I do competitive Judo and wrestling--and nutrition is very important to me as a way of building strength-- this book will come in handy to me while I train.

The organization of the book makes it easy to use. It is broken down by sections like weight training, carbohydrates, protein, and profiles. You can look up the specific topic you are interested in and find information about it fast. The first topic I read was on protein and carbohydrates. I learned how these two elements are essential in an athletes' diet. Athletes that run like marathon runners require lots of carbohydrates; on the other hand an athletes like power lifters require lot's of protein.

Avery's sports Nutrition Almanac is a little too complicated for an athlete that just wants to eat right and perform well. The book talks a lot about the biological section of sports nutrition. One thing I learned is the how a muscle is formed. First a group of Amino Acids conbine to make a protein, then those proteins come together to form a muschle tissue. Thia all occurs in an athlete's sleep.

This book is great for an athlete who wants to improve his or her performance by getting proper nutrition. I reccommend this to athletes who compete nationally or internationaly. Sports Nutrition is being updated almost every six months. One supplement that may be considered effective today, may not be tomorrow.
