A Guide to Survivorship for Women with Ovarian Cancer (A Johns Hopkins Press Health Book)
ASIN: 1550090968 |
Product Description
Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of death from gynecologic malignancies in the Western world. While substantial progress has been made, and more and more patients are living longer with the disease, the majority of patients with advanced ovarian cancer are not cured. Ovarian Cancer, a volume in the American Cancer Society Atlas of Clinical Oncology series, thoroughly discusses pathology, biology, epidemiology, genetics and screening. Specific chapters examine diagnosis and staging, surgical cytoreduction, and primary chemotherapy regimens. Renowned contributors lend their expertise to chapters on radiation therapy, early stage management, palliative surgery, and developmental and high-dose chemotherapy. Germ cell tumors and ovarian sex cord-stroma tumors are also examined. In addition, the text outlines the major progress made in the understanding of the biology of ovarian cancer and the molecular genetics of the disease.
Book Description
This unique guide for ovarian cancer gives women crucial medical information to improve the chance for lengthy remission and cure, as well as emotional support for the journey. Although many ovarian cancers are discovered after they have spread, having information about surgery and best practices can be life-saving. For example, choosing a surgeon from the new specialty of gynecologic oncology for staging and de-bulking surgeries strongly impacts survival. Women need to at least consider newer chemotherapy and biological treatments in research trials. Women also want to hear the stories of others who live with the ambiguity of remission. Ovarian Cancer includes:
- Ten things to know at the time of diagnosis, for optimal outcome
- How choosing a gynecologic oncology surgeon impacts survival
- When and how you can consider newer treatments, now in clinical trials
- Stories of dozens of women living with ovarian cancer, some for many years
- "Questions for Your Doctor" for all decision points
- A focus on epithelial cancers, the most common and difficult to treat, with additional information on germ cell, sex cord-stromal cell, and low malignant potential ovarian cancers
Noted cancer writer Kristine Conner and patient advocate Lauren Langford provide ovarian cancer patients with a supportive and much-needed resource.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Resource.......2007-05-19
Ovarian Cancer: Patient-Centered Guides is a comprehensive resource for patients with ovarian cancer and their families. It explains ovarian cancer and the various treatment options, side effects, etc in complete no nonsense terms that are easy to understand. We give a copy of the book to all of our newly diagnosed ovarian cancer patients.
Ovarian Cancer: Your Guide to Taking Control.......2007-01-03
Almost everything I have learned about ovarian cancer has been included in this book. It covers the vocabulary and the multiple treatment options. It does not answer the question of "what to do now that I have this" but does not purport to do so. It is the most comprehensive single source of ovarian cancer information that I have seen. It rated 4 stars but there may be no 5 star single source of ovarian cancer information. Why is it so difficult for the hospital oncology bookstores to stock this? My hospital bookstore recommended this but they are having trouble obtaining it. Do the authors realize this?
Excellent reference!.......2006-08-03
I discovered this book two years after having a "serous ovarian neoplasm of low-level malignant potential" removed. This book explained things so much better than my doctors did, and explained why some of the things that I went through without understanding were done. I wish so much that I had had this book when I was diagnosed; it would have been very comforting to have the info that the book gives.
On the other hand, I discovered by reading the book that I had excellent doctors: it looks like I got state-of-the-art care, without even realizing it. That's good to know.
I recommend this highly for anyone who has or may have ovarian cancer.
Several errors - not current.......2006-05-01
I tried some of the websites in the book and they were not valid and other erroneous things that were not current. I was hoping for more information on what I could do for ovarian cancer from a natural avenue, rather than simply following the crowd. I was able to find the information I was looking for in another book, so this one is on a shelf gathering dust where it belongs. This book is okay if you are looking for everything conventional, but the same info is available everywhere on the internet, so it was a waste of my money.
comment from the author.......2006-01-18
I am glad that women and their families are finding the book helpful. Most of the information remains current, almost three years after publication. However, there have been some developments in treatment, so I encourage everyone to supplement the book with their own research (National Cancer Institute, etc.)

Book Description
The first book on ovarian cancer for the general reader, this is a comprehensive, compassionate look at a disease millions of people first became aware of with the tragic death of comedienne Gilda Radner in 1989. Dr. Piver, a leading cancer surgeon, discusses the causes of ovarian cancer, preventative measures, classic signs and symptoms, diagnostic tests and genetic screening, the different types of ovarian cancer, the four stages in the disease's progression, and the most effective treatments. Gene Wilder's intimate commentary, letters from Gilda's fans, and excerpts from her book, It's Always Something, bring a personal perspective to Dr. Piver's expert medical advice.
This remarkable collaboration will help women feel more hopeful, and less scared and alone, when faced with ovarian cancer.
Customer Reviews:
Great Primer on Ovarian Cancer.......2003-01-23
I was healthy, young and active when, out of the blue, I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. The next thing I knew they cut me up, filled me with poison (chemo), blasted me into premature menopause and made my hair fall out. I was so overwhelmed.
A kind friend gave me this book. It gave me a clue about what was happening. I read and re-read it and began to understand my disease. With understanding comes hope.
If you know someone with ovarian cancer -- give them (and yourself) this book.
Gilda's Disease.......1999-12-27
A great first read after diagnosis. Very informative about the why's and wherefore's regarding ovarian cancer made personal with excerpts from Gilda's Radner's book: It's Always Something (a great second read).
The author writes with authority and compassion, a rather rare combination in the medical profession. A welcomed book at a time when one needs facts combined with heart.
I laughed as I wept; life-or-death questions answered........1997-09-21
One of the most feared cancers is ovarian cancer, with good reason. It may be asymptomatic; what early symptoms do appear are vague, diffuse, and often are not taken seriously by either women or their doctors. As a result, the disease is often advanced before diagnosis occurs--as in the tragic case of Gilda Radner.
This book lives up to its subtitle: sharing personal experiences and a medical perspective on
ovarian cancer. The personal experiences are excerpts from Gilda's book "It's Always Something", excerpts from letters to Gene Wilder, and comments from him. I defy any one to be unmoved by these pages. The voice of the cancer victim and the cancer survivor come through, sometimes tragic, sometimes comic, always honest.
The medical perspective, interwoven with the pertinent experiences, is equally valuable. I think it is superb. Dr. Piver has a remarkable talent for clear and succinct treatment of such complex and scary topics as surgical staging, the 30 different types of ovarian cancer, survival rates and alternative therapies. His historical perspective and obvious mastery of the field enable him to answer the most difficult question-- with a minimum of gobbledegook, and with up-to-date information. This book is almost like having a humane and sympathetic gynecological oncologist across the desk.
Of course, this book could save your life or that
of someone you love. Information is one of the best weapons we have against this killer. I am in awe of how much information and wisdom these gentlemen have packed into 184 pages. I could not recommend it more highly.
Great source of information.......1997-04-04
The book explains the experiences of Gilda and Gene. It provides an understandable decription of the symptoms, treatment, and the experience of having Ovarian Cancer. It helped me understand what had happened, and was about to happen to my Mother. How the Cancer could have gone so far with so many doctors looking for a cause of all the symptoms they could not find a cause for, till it was too late
Book Description
Nina Davidson Arnold weaves a positive and uplifting tale of her five-and-a-half year journey while undergoing continuous treatment for ovarian cancer. The elegant and thoughtful prose merges notations from eleven daily journals kept over the years of treatment. As the story unfolds it exposes the highs and lows of living in spite of the disease. The daily journals were an incentive to help her endure the over-whelming odds she faced with cancer, while allowing her to appreciate life through her faith and constant encouragement from her husband, family and friends. Her courage, faith, strength, and will to live give meaning to life while bringing a sense of normalcy.

Nina and her courageous fight.......2005-06-13
This book touched my heart so much. I would recommend that all women, whether they are fighting this disease or not, read of
how Nina Rae fought her cancer with such grace and despite, what must have been very difficult, continued to enjoy her family, friends and her art. I knew Nina from childhood and last saw her on January 31st, 2004. We were both at a concert given by another former fellow resident of the small community we grew up. She was still glowing and enjoying the concert, the old and new friends and the evening! And although we had not seen each other in years, we had been in indirect contact through her sister Kasey. I must say that the entire family, Nina and both of her sisters, her husband and her brothers-in-law has shown great courage over the years and are role models for all of humanity.
Book Description
With sensitivity and with humor, Barbara Van Billiard sets down the facts of her struggle and outlines the steps she took to deal with surgeries and chemotherapy. Her use of, and explanation, of various mind-body techniques, such as imagery and meditation, are a thought provoking approach that any cancer patient could use to help with life threatening illness.

My immune system booster!.......2001-07-25
I was diagnosed with advanced ovarian cancer in July 2000. After reading and hearing about the dismal survival statistics, I became extremely distressed and upset. A few months later, I discovered 'Feather'. This book boosted my immune system! It is informative, encouraging, humorous, and best of all, human. Barbara's story is certainly worth telling. I retell it often. My copy gets revisited on those sad and down days - a source of encouragement that helps me stay happy and strong.
An inspirational guide to living with ovarian cancer........2001-05-27
Once my mother was diagnosed with late-stage ovarian cancer, I began to learn about this terrible disease.
Of all the books and internet sites I found, this little paperback is among the best. Brief, authoritative and written by a long-term suvivor. It gives you the good, the bad and ugly about treatment options and the disease with an upbeat undercurrent that science and medicine is becoming more successful in treating ovarian cancer.
The author wrote this book from the victims perspective, which makes it a great introductory tome for anyone just diagnosed with this vicious disease.
"EXCELLENT" UPLIFTING FEATHER IN MY WIG.......2001-05-18
This book that was written by an R.N. who experienced all of the Ovarian Cancer Disease and has indicated humor, positive attitude towards beating this "Beast". It's a must read book to make your day that is filled with laughter and a determined feeling of getting better each and every day. The review with one star is obviously a person who did not read the entire book and I challenge her to read it in its entirety and guarantee that she will love the book when finished! I absolutely loved the book and found so much healing in reading it myself. For I am also an Ovarian Cancer Survivor of two years and going strong. Godbless you Barbara...
It upset my mother.......2001-05-01
I bought this book for my mother, who is currently battling ovarian cancer. I bought it to inspire her, and let her know that there are survivors out there. Well, the introduction was written to dramatize the book. It went on and on about how few people survive ovarian cancer (not true!!) and what a miracle it was that the writer survived. Consequently, my mother got extremely depressed. She never read the whole book because the introduction upset her so much.
Worth every penny!.......2000-08-03
I got this book for my mom who's recently been diagnosed with cancer. I picked it up this afternoon and didn't put it done until I was finished. What an inspiration! Just what I needed after a long week of discouraging news and facing grim statistics. The author was cured of Stage III Ovarian Cancer and tells how she battled the disease and won. Nothing "hokey" or "alternative" about it--unless you consider meditation, prayer, visualization, and POSITIVE thinking "hokey." This is an EXCELLENT book, surely it's a "must-have" for anyone facing this disease.
Book Description
This landmark work in women's health identifies and offers solutions to the hormonal dysfunctions afflicting millions of young women, teens, and even children, that rob women of future fertility and contribute to devastating problems -- from early onset puberty and obesity to depression and increased cancer risk.
Women's health is more than breast cancer, pregnancy, and menopause. In this groundbreaking new work, Dr. Elizabeth Lee Vliet identifies and explains rarely acknowledged, pervasive threats to young women's health and fertility -- PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome), POD (Premature Ovarian Decline), and Premature Ovarian Failure (menopause in the young) -- and the overlooked causes of endometriosis, cystitis, early puberty, allergies, heart disease, mood disorders, depression, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, bone loss, anxiety, obesity, and diabetes.
A kind of Silent Spring of women's health, It's My Ovaries, Stupid! presents compelling evidence from worldwide research that common environmental toxins and endocrine disruptors in pesticides, plastic food wrappers, food additives, preservatives, soy supplements, aspartame in diet sodas and junk food, and more -- as well as lifestyle factors such as stress -- can all profoundly disrupt hormone function, even in childhood.
Insidious robbers of quality of life, fertility, and health, hormone dysfunctions are on the rise today, afflicting younger and younger women.
Why? What can you do about it? How can you get tested? What treatments are available? Dr. Vliet interprets the latest scientific research and draws on more than twenty years of clinical experience to answer these and many other crucial questions about common health problems in young women.
Whose job is it to take care of the ovaries...beyond their function in reproduction? Why do you have trouble getting help for "hormone problems" that are clearly linked to your monthly cycle? It's My Ovaries, Stupid! bridges this gap in women's health care and shows you how to understand your symptoms and get reliable tests, how to receive treatment and improve your health, how to wade through the controversies surrounding hormone replacement therapy, and how to explore cutting-edge options for thyroid problems.
You can't afford not to read this book. Your life, your fertility, and your long-term health may depend on it. It's not all in your head, and it's not just stress. It's your ovaries!
Customer Reviews:
My Mother Loved this book.......2007-01-16
My mother just turned 50 and has been noticing some changes that she has atributed to hormones. My uncle, a doctor, recommended this book to help her understand what is going on.
Overall my mom really seems to like this book and i would recommend it to other pre-menopausal women.
A Response to a male review.......2006-09-02
I have yet to read the book, but I was reading over the reviews and I found it funny that a male was so ticked off that Dr. Vliet only spoke of female issues.
For one, you just appear ignorant for being upset about a disease that will never inflict a male (i.e. PCOS). Secondly men do not visit the doctors as regularily as females do and to try and discredit Dr. Vliet is nonsense!
Most males if they have an ailment will tough it out and figure it will correct itself. I've witnessed many men later on in life get so depressed about their health conditions b/c they were negligent of their own health.
So in conclusion to my rant you truly cannot have any say so over a matter that does not inflict your sex. Better inform yourself on your own health problems and do not think you know all. Men like you in the medical field is why women have to suffer as much as they do b/c they are so selfish, uneducated and narrow minded.
The truth be told everyone needs to keep a better check on their nutrional/mineral value on a daily basis so things do not become out of whack.
THIS BOOK SAVED MY LIFE!!!!!!.......2006-02-25
I thought I was going crazy! I was only 26 years old and I was visiting 5 different doctors that were treating me for various problems (weight gain, migraines, acne, depression, hot flashes and recurrent yeast infections). Every doctor told me the same thing...."DIET and EXERCISE or YOU NEED AN ANTIDEPRESSANT"!!! Then I read this book... It all made sense!!! Dr. Vliet helped me understand that a hormone imbalance could affect every part of my body. I didn't waste any time. I called Dr. Vliet and made an appointment. She was the answer to my prayers!
I understand not everyone can call and make an appointment but reading this book helps you understand your body. It takes you step-by-step through what tests to ask for and how to read and interpret your results. Being in the "normal range" may not be so normal for your body!
You may not have PCOS but most women are on birth control pills and all women will eventually go thru Menopause. If you are a woman...read this book. Put your health and life back together.. Knowledge is Power!!!
FIVE STARS PLUS!.......2005-12-10
The title of this book jumped out at me and struck my curiousity. After reading the book and being totally blown away, I went to see Dr. Vliet in Texas for a second medical opinion. Words cannot express the positive improvement in my life as a direct result of Dr. Vliet. This fascinating book is full of true life examples and actual case studies based on her years of medical experience. Her writing style reflects wisdom, warmth, humor, expertise, encouragement, and HOPE.
Bravo, Dr. Vliet.......2005-11-14
Every woman should read this book!
I've suffered from PCOS (Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome) symptoms since my first period and went from doctor to doctor seeking help. As is typical, I was often told it was in my head. One doctor told me that my problem was: "The size of my ass and the amount of time I sit on it."
Forget that I was thin when the disorder first became debilitating. Another doctor told me that I couldn't have PCOS as I only had one cyst on my ovary--you don't have to have any cysts to have PCOS as Dr. Vliet explains in this book.
Many doctors out there are totally ignorant about PCOS and the complications it causes. A lot of them will put you on progesterone if you're having hormonal problems--though often the problem is estradiol deficiency (I've been there).
For me PCOS caused severe fatigue, depression, hypoglycemia/hyperglycemia, lack of libido, 90 pounds of weight gain, excess body hair, muscle and joint pain, irregular periods, PMS that lasts all month, mood swings, IBS, and many other symptoms. I became an invalid in my mid-20's due to PCOS and the resulting estradiol decline it caused. I was a medical student with a 3.9 GPA but had to discontinue my studies due to the severe fatigue the hormone imbalance caused.
More recently, I've developed high blood pressure, hyperplasia of the uterine lining and heart problems--all complications of PCOS--I'm only 40.
All along, I knew the problem was my hormones, but doctors didn't believe me or didn't know what to do about it. This book was enlightening. I read it and thought: 'Finally there's a medical professional out there who understands.' I was elated!
Luckily, I recently found a doctor who seems to have a good grasp of the disorder (though no one compares to Vliet) and I'm beginning to feel a little better. Nothing can fix the damage that the disorder has done to my body over the years; however, and I wish I could have read a book like this long ago.
A lot of women write to me about hypoglycemia, and I always recommend this book. Again, every woman should read this book. I can't recommend this or Vliet's other books highly enough. I'm grateful to her for her body of work and for helping people understand hormone disorders through these books.

My mother died of ovarian cancer recently. This book is a concise description of the symptoms, how doctors attitudes need to change so that more women are diagnosed at earlier stages, how important the right caliber and kind of doctor is for a good prognosis, and it gives hope to those who have been diagnosed with ovarian cancer or have loved ones who have been diagnosed with ovarian cancer that they too have a chance to survive this disease through the wonderful short stories of each of the survives in the book. It is a short and very easy to read book that is packed with useful information. A must read if your life has been touched by ovarian cancer in any way.
Book Description
Whether you're a newly diagnosed ovarian cancer patient, a survivor, or a friend or relative of either, this completely updated second edition gives you authoritative, practical answers to your questions about treatment options, post-treatment quality of life, sources of support, and much more. Written by a gynecologic oncologist and a gynecologic surgeon, with actual patient commentary, this is an invaluable resource for anyone coping with the physical and emotional turmoil of ovarian cancer.
Book Description
This comprehensive guide to ovarian cancer offers a wealth of information to ease the physical, emotional, and psychic suffering of women with the disease. The authors -- two Johns Hopkins gynecologic oncologists and a gynecologic-oncology clinical nurse -- put particular emphasis on the concept of "survivorship," or living life well in the face of daunting uncertainties. They stress the importance of self-determination: the right of each patient to be informed, involved, and in control of her care.
Up-to-date information on diagnosis and treatment, including surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, pain management, and alternative therapies, forms the core of the book. But the authors' immense clinical experience also means they understand what women worry about and care about, and they address these issues with true compassion. Stressing quality of life, self-determination, and living life to the fullest, this remarkable book speaks to women with ovarian cancer everywhere.

Presented as an item in a gift box to a family member who was in the hospital, recovering from ovarian cancer surgery, this book was highly welcomed. My cousin appreciated it very much and told me that it was very informative and she was happy to have received it; she felt that she would benefit from it both while in the hospital and after having gotten home, preparing for her chemo and radiation therapies.
