Book Description
Severe dieting often results in periods of reactive binge eating. a phenomenon experienced by one in twenty American women. Responses to these periods may include prolonged fasting, self-induced vomiting, abuse of laxatives and diuretics, and obsessive exercise: all symptoms of bulimia. This workbook contains tools to help bulimics break the cycle of bingeing and reacting, allowing them to take control of their lives and make positive behavior changes. Use it to recognize the symptoms of bulimia, its causes, and the health risks it poses. Then work through the exercises to normalize eating and deal with the issues that underlie the symptoms. Take control of your recovery process with checklists, self-monitoring assessments, and thought diaries. Practical advice and real-life examples reinforce attitudes and offer encouragement. Discover that it is possible to overcome your disorder and live a happier, more fulfilling life.
This comprehensive guide covers everything from bulimia's symptoms, causes, and risks to how to normalize eating, shift eating-disordered thoughts, build on personal strengths, improve self-esteem, deal with underlying issues, prevent relapse, and understand what medications can help. With many real-life examples, this book also helps readers learn through the experiences of other sufferers how to overcome their disorder and live a happier, more fulfilled life.

Overcoming Bulimia workbook.......2007-02-06
This is the best resource for eating disorder self-help I have seen. Widely applicable for those who binge and purge by a number of definitions, including overexercising and subjective binging. Addresses a comprehensive range of related issues such as anxiety, obsessiveness, and perfectionism. Practical with real step-by-step things you can actually DO, ways to measure your progress, and encouragement about expected setbacks. Very strongly recommended.
Really Helpful Book.......2005-07-11
This workbook is good for many reasons. It is written in a way that is easy to read, and very interesting. It does not seem at all like a dry textbook. It covers everything from defining eating disorders, to the root of the problem, to steps to take to begin recovering. I would highly recommend it for all ages.
Easy to follow instructions, but can be improved.......2005-03-06
The step-by-step instructions are easy to follow. It would have been better if the authors had given guidelines on how to judge when to move on to the next phase of recovery, and how to deal with feelings that arise at each stage.
Using with my therapist and DBT.......2005-01-06
This book breaks it down and then builds you up on a path to recovery. I use it as part of the things I pick up when I absolutely don't know what to do next and the disease is beating down my door. Very well written. Highly recommended for the bullimic that is ready for recovery.
Most Important Book I Will Ever Read.......2004-05-11
From start to finish this book is packed with useful, informative and best of all, unintimidating tools that are extremely helpful. This book offers insight into the distorted thoughts that accompany eating disorders. By understanding what is going on in your mind, you can learn to change the way you see both yourself and the effects of your eating disorder. I highly recommend this book to anyone suffering with an eating disorder or to anyone who knows someone who is. Reading this book truly changed my life, and for the first time in four years I am actually living a healthy and fufilling lifestyle.

Insightful.......2006-02-04
This book is not only a wonderful resource for sufferers of bulimia. But it is also a resource for thier family and friends. The book explains bulimia, tells Lindsey Hall's personal story, and has a special chapter for family and loved ones. A Guide to Recovery Review.......2005-09-02
This book was full of useful information and written so the layman could understand. I was completely satisfied with the information I received.
A blessing.......2004-10-23
I have been battling this horrible disease for almost a year now. I am lucky to have sought help a lot quicker than others, and I began reading this book the day I didn't purge for the first time in 3 months. I am on day 3 of no purging right now, and when ever I get stressed or something triggers bulimia, I open this book and read the stuff is says over and over again. I am seeking out a therapist, but this book is helping me stay strong right now. I highly recommend this. I think others might get frustrated with this book because THEY haven't decided to quit. It takes your innerself to quit an addiction, outside sources only help you. If you aren't ready to commit, then I can see why you would not like this book. But no book will make you quit. In addition to being helpful to a bulimic, it had great information that you can photocopy and give to people who want to help you. It really lets them understand all the pain you are going through. Good luck, and remember, you aren't alone.
nothing novel.......2004-07-09
I have read just about everything written with regard to eating disorders since about the beginning of time, and this book stands out as one of the starkest examples of someone trying to exploit the disease and make a career out of being a "recovered eating disorder." Aside from this, the book offers no insight that cannot be found in any other routine book on eating disorders. A waste of my money, and even more disappointing, a waste of my time.
Book Description
Written for high school and college-aged readers and their loved ones, this self-help guide provides the latest information on eating disorders for anyone confronting these problems for the first time. The author encourages both young men and women to take charge of their lives by understanding and acknowledging their illness, learning more about it, and starting a practical course of action. Questions and answers are at the heart of the book, offering a range of ways for readers to pinpoint problems, identify negative triggers and diffuse them. The conversational text includes insights and inspiring quotes from the author's clients and readers. Included are special sections on athletes, tips for avoiding relapse, basic facts about nutrition, and the role of families in recovery.

Covers basic information about anorexia and bulimia.......2004-05-06
Written by a licensed clinical social worker who has specialized in the field of eating disorders for over 20 years, The Beginner's Guide To Eating Disorders Recovery is a fact-filled guide that covers basic information about anorexia and bulimia, the first steps to recovery, choosing a therapist and working with a nutritionist, basic considerations that romantic partners of people with eating disorders need to know, and much more. A practical, straightforward, easy-to-follow primer and a "must-read" for anyone who is concerned about eating disorders observed in a friend or a loved one.
Book Description
"Bulimia Nervosa and Binge-Eating, especially novel in including an advocate/friend in the process of helping the recovering bulimic, will appeal to people with bulimia who feel they need a practical program that they can `do'."
Jennifer Manlowe, author of Faith Born of Seduction: Sexual Trauma, Body Image, and Religion
"An excellent new book written in a clear and precise style. . . There is a feeling of optimism and hope about this book. . . Many will find that they can move away from their bulimic behavior using this manual."
Signpost, The newsletter of the Eating Disorders Association
Bulima Nervosa affects one in twenty women in the West. Concern about their shape and weight can drive these women to such measures as prolonged fasting, excessive exercise, self-induced vomiting, and the taking of unnecessary laxatives. While the majority of books written about bulimia merely address the social and political realities that lead women to binge-eating, Bulimia Nervosa and Binge-Eating takes a strongly proactive approach, offering both a description of the disorder and a six-step plan for recovery.
This book is an indispensable guide for sufferers, their friends and families, those in counseling professions, and anyone seeking a better understanding of this disorder. Providing a description of the disturbances in eating habits and the psychological and social problems that indicate or result in bulimia, as well as information on possible medical complications and treatments available, this book will be useful for those seeking to understand what either they themselves or someone close to them is experiencing.
Most important, the author has devised a highly successful self-help guide for those who want to tackle their difficulties on their own, offering a step-by-step program to recovery. This plan has been used successfully for several years and has been revised and improved based on feedback from people who have employed its methods.

a no-nonsense guide to self-help.......2002-05-27
Peter Cooper's book _Bulimia Nervosa and Binge-Eating_ is a no-nonsense guide to self-help for binge eaters and those suffering from bulimia.
First, Cooper defines bulimia nervosa and binge-eating. Then he goes into causes and effects. He explains the dangers and drawbacks of vomiting repeatedly and using laxatives. But that's just the first 1/3 of the book.
The rest of the book is a plan for recovering from bulimia and/or binge-eating. It's a step by step procedure... everything in it makes good sense and has been tested and tried by others before, with success. The plan is the best part of the book... the author sets forth a plan for recovery, including a plan for what to do if you feel like going on a binge.
Besides the plan, the author makes helpful points throughout the book, like:
about alcohol-- "if you drink excessively you will not be able to make full use of this program"
about overeating just once-- "no one meal can have a significant effect on your weight"
about how you're not alone-- "enlist the assistance (with the meal plan) of a close friend or relative"
about laxatives-- "laxatives are wholly ineffective as a method for losing weight or compensating for overeating"
about binging and its effect on weight -- "the number of calories absorbed from binges, even after vomiting, is greater than what would have been absorbed in a binge-free day during which normal meals and snacks would have been eaten"
about eating normal meals-- "it is usual that people who replace a pattern of dieting and binge-eating with regular meals do not gain weight."
The bottom line: this book by Peter Cooper is easy to use, and the points in it are sound, for those suffering from bulimia, binge-eating, even others who have unsound eating habits.
Not what I was looking for.......2001-02-13
Whilst this book contained some good points, I felt that it left me alone too much especially in the first weeks. For me this disease is not as simple as just stopping from one day to another. I was hoping that it would give me some guidance as what to do when I was feeling like binging
This book has changed my life around........1997-03-30
If I could, I would thank everyone that is a part of writing
this book. I have recommended it to many people, hoping it will help them in their recovery. Thank You.

Recovering Using Reality vs. Therapy.......1997-11-04
I admit I purchased this book from the "discount" section of a local book store, after having bought
countless titles previously, all the while looking for the answers
regarding my food addiction and subsequent recovery.
What was the key to success? Who could help me
transform? When I saw the title, the words "bulimia"
and "recovery" jumped out at me, and I bought
the book in a knee-jerk reaction, thinking it was
just another in the series of failures. All of the reading
I had done up to this point had proven fruitless.
The book began much the same...tales of woe and sadness
by recovering overeaters and bulimics themselves, and the author's
own personal story, saying how we overeaters tend
to cover our emotions with food, and ignore the steps
needed to stay in recovery. "Yeah, yeah," I thought, as
I grabbed another cookie, "tell me something I DON'T
know!" (Chomp.)
That is exactly what Susan did for me in this book. I
was able to "put the cookie down" long enough to
keep this book in my hands, getting more from the
reading than I ever could from any cookie. What is different
about this self-help book was that she offered real,
useable solutions for recovery, even without intense therapy, and allowed you the
options of which you would like to use. They have
worked for others, and she encouraged their use
in a manner that was neither accusatory nor demanding.
She stated several techniques and affirmations to
use in place of the old, outdated eating tapes that
many of us overeaters have had ingrained on our
brains for years. Susan developed and explained three
phases of recovery, and I was able to envision myself in each stage.
She listed guidelines and characteristics of each stage, to let you know when you had entered.
It was inspiring to me to be able to
have that goal in mind, instead of where my next
meal would come from, or when my next purging session
would occur.
I was able to apply Susan's simple, yet necessary,
steps to recovering from my addiction, and recommend
thi
