Book Description
Originally published nearly ten years ago, Peace, Love & Healing offered the revolutionary message that we have an innate ability to heal ourselves. Now proven by numerous scientific studies, the connection between our minds and our bodies has been increasingly accepted as fact throughout the mainstream medical community. In a new introduction, Dr. Bernie Siegel highligths current research on the relationships among consciousness, psychosocial factors, attitude and immune function.
"Love and peace of mind do protect us," Siegel writes. "They allow us to overcome the problems that life hands us. They teach us to survive...to live now...to have the courage to confront each day."

Change the mind, change the body--and get well!.......2007-05-09
I've submitted essentially the same review for Love, Medicine and Miracles as for Peace, Love and Healing. I read Love, Medicine and Miracles first and then Peace, Love and Healing and also recommend that others read them in that sequence: Peace, Love, and Healing is very much a continuation of the earlier book. Having said that, the most important thing is for anyone facing a health crisis to read them both. The sequence in which they're read is less important than that they be read--and absorbed.
I was introduced to these books shortly after having been diagnosed with cancer by another person who was (and still is, unfortunately) dealing with some major health issues. Although I've read tons of stuff relating to cancer and, especially, treatments of various types and stripes, I can't think of anything that provided greater value and (even) guidance to me during those challenging days, mainly because getting the "head" right is half the battle--and the half of the battle that far too many completely neglect. One of the things that Bernie makes imminently clear to the reader is that he/she, the reader, has a great deal of power over the course of his/her illness. That's an important message to someone feeling powerless. Plenty of powerful examples, thought exercises, etc. The messages are uplifting, hopeful, life-affirming, empowering, and above all, realistic.
Although I was vaguely aware of the mind-body connection before reading these books, I now understand that psychoneuroimmunology (if that is an unfamiliar term, you will become familiar with it by the time you've read Peace, Love and Healing) is real and can potentially be harnessed to the patient's great benefit: change the mind, change the body.
Naturally, I can't do justice to these books with a few short sentences here. But here's the bottom line: these books should be read by anyone facing a health crisis who sincerely wants to get well. But they should also be read by anyone who has a friend or loved one facing a health crisis. Read them yourself before you send them on to the friend/loved one. You'll find them valuable both for yourself and also for helping your friend/loved one deal with it. The books should be read by anyone facing a life-threatening illness, but their value transcends cancer (or other serious illness) self-help by a long shot, valuable as that is. Even if your present health seems to be good, you should still read these books. They will help you live more effectively even if you never get sick. And they will surely equip you to deal with a major illness if you ever have to face one.
Bernie, you're great!.......2007-04-03
I just love Bernie Siegal, and admire his openness and willingness to speak out and risk the ridicule of the traditional medical community. It seems his ideas really are important in healing!
Essential reading for everyone's health.......2002-02-28
Bernie Siegel writes in a very conversational-easy-to-read style in a book packed with information, facts, and understanding which is helpful for everyone regarding the connection between mind-body healing. Bernie Siegel helps us to take responsibility for our own health and to work as a team member with medical professionals in a co-operative style of relating.
Having fairly recently been diagnosed with an advanced cancer this book helped me to see cancer in a new light.
Everyone would bemnefit from reading this book for their health in general.
Excellent book!.......2001-09-28
I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in their health! You will learn about true healing, from the inside out.
Highest Praise to Dr Bernie Siegel.......2000-08-24
I have been blessed to attend several of his workshops & have met & talked with him in person & frequently email back & forth, He is a very very special person & he helped me successfully control a life threatening rare illness so I could use the illness as a gift & catalyst for living well & being able to achieve my dreams -Marsha Lampert MBA MS Wantagh NY

Incredibly Valuable.......2004-08-03
Dr. Mayer brings numerous perspectives (Western psychologist, storyteller, student of Greek civilization) to his 30+ years of practice of Qigong to deliver an easy-to-read guide to this Chinese method of healing. His broad learning allows Dr. Mayer to share insights and ideas that help both novice and experienced practitioner obtain a deeper experience of the stances and movements that he clearly describes (with accompanying photos). His academic training shows through the logical and systematic development of ideas and exercises in the book. Overall, it was really easy to read, and also easy to use as a guide to various "sets" of Qigong methods for "bodymind healing". The appendices which give a guide to exercises for self-healing and research are useful for quick reference, as well. A great buy.

One for beginners.......2007-04-16
This is a book for people who know very little about the body/mind connection. It's good information if you're new to the subject and but it was written in 1977 and the author's forword in the new edition is dated 1985. I was disappointed. In the world of quantum biology this material now seems a little dated. I don't recommend it to anyone who is already familiar with the concepts of body/mind interface but if you are a novice it's a good introduction.
This is a lifelong keeper.......2007-03-15
I picked this book up at a bookstore about 12 years ago but did not read it until I began acupuncture for a knee problem. I have always been interested in how the body works and why it is the way it is; this book explains so much about the body.
Whenever something physically wrong happens to me or my family I refer to this book to see what we can do to change our behaviors to create a healthier bodymind.
Incredible connection of BMS.......2003-07-17
As an integrative therapist, I see these connections all the time. The chakra/thought/physical/emotional connections in what we hold and what then holds us. This book is a wonderful read, easy and engrossing with great information about the authors' own experience. I thoroughly recommend it to my students and to those interested in learning more about how the bodymind connection works in order to look deeper at who they are and are becoming.
A highly recommended book! Fascinating!.......2000-05-27
If you ever wonder what kind of body type you have and what baggage comes with that profile, go grab this book up! It explains the thoughts that create some of the most common ailments that modern people walk around with now. If you wonder about what causes you to have a broad chest and skinny legs, this is the book for you. If you have any part in the healing art field, this book is essential for your library. Enjoy it, be surely satisfied and fascinated all in one sitting.
A classic!.......2000-03-25
I purchased the mass-market edition of this book about 20 years ago (it is copyrighted 1977), but I never got around to reading it. I did start in on it and I always remembered the story that he starts the book with. The author (a psychologist and gerontologist)is standing naked before a group of people in some type of encounter session and after having him walk around a bit, a Dr. John Pierrakos proceeds to tell him all kinds of things about himself that Pierrakos should not have been able to know. He was able to read all kinds of things about a person just by observing the patterns of tension in their body. More recently I picked up a new copy and read the whole book. I have read a lot on the subjects of yoga, meditation, bodywork, physical fitness, psychology, etc. and this is one of the most interesting books I have come across. The main point is that our minds and bodies can't really be separated. Our bodies can store tension. This can be caused by physical, emotional, mental or spiritual factors and usually once the tension goes in it doesn't come out (and can cause all kinds of physical problems). This is something I know a lot about, as I have spent decades working to understand and release my own deep physical tension. Currently I have been practicing yoga (ashtanga yoga) and this is the best thing I have found yet. There are many other approaches. But I find that very few people who should understand physical tension (yoga teachers, doctors, bodyworkers, even some Rolfers) really do understand the subject. And I have never found this subject to be explained clearly anywhere - except in this book. The chapters are organized around the sections of the body and are full of stories and examples from the author's experiences in working on himself and working with others. He integrates ideas from Ida Rolf, Moshe Feldenkrais, Fritz Perls, Wilhelm Reich and many other pioneers. After reading the book, I was at first sad that the author has not continued to write on this topic, but then I realized that he has already written the definitive book on the subject. And although it covers a lot of deep territory the book is very easy to read. Definitely a classic. Most highly recommended.
Book Description
This book represents the fruit of many years of research into the use of acupuncture as a tool for releasing holding patterns in the bodymind as a way to restore functional/structural balance and to relieve chronic pain. Dr. Seem shares his clinical experience of how and why this style of acupuncture works and presents specific protocols for use in the clinic. This book is a valuable reference text for anyone whose practice focuses mainly on acupuncture.
Customer Reviews:
Refreshing.......2006-02-02
I trained in acupuncture some 25 years ago: at a time when contemporary chinese rigidity was just beginning to creep in and edge traditional practices on to the sidelines. Unfortunately, it has since come to dominate, negating the art and skill of the practitioner to the point where he or she is effectively redundant and software can diagnose and prescribe. Some people may enjoy being treated by a computer. I'm not one of them.
Any book that pushes both experienced and would-be therapists into thinking differently has to be good! You don't have to believe every theory or strategy, but it is healthy to contemplate alternative possibilities and even try them.
By the way, is it my imagination or do the negative reviews appear to be written by the same none too literate reviewer?
Every acupuncturist and bodyworker should read this book.......2004-02-14
I have every one of Dr. Seem's books. As a registered nurse with 30 years of experience and a Zen Shiatsu therapist to boot, I can recommend his books without hesitation. Every though Dr. Seem is an acupuncturist, he (whether he knows it or not) is also a master bodyworker. All his work has been proven to be beneficial not only by Dr. Seem but by others in the field.
an important work.......2000-04-07
Mark Seem's book is a comprehensive guide to using acupuncture in the treatment of myofascial pain. Being an acupuncturist and TCM practitioner (having done part of my training in China) I agree with Dr Seem's views on the herbalisation of acupuncture completely. Jane Austin's review I find frankly silly, and would not be surprised if it was simply a plant from a rival author intent on bringing down this books averages. This is a definite 5 star book and a must read for any acupuncturist who wants to help their patients get out of pain as quickly and efficiently as possible.
Outstanding book.......2000-04-02
In response to the previous critique of Mark Seem by "Jane Austen," I would like to mention that Dr. Seem is an outstanding practitioner with well over 20 years of clinical experience in treating patients with acupuncture. I have used a similar approach of combining modern trigger point techniques with classical acupuncture and have had tremendous success. I am a Doctor of Oriental Medicine and have received additional training in China. I find Dr. Seem's critique of the TCM acupuncture is highly accurate. For those who are used to only the TCM methods of acupuncture, I recommend any of Mark Seems books. If you want something that is immediately useful in the clinic, start with this book. "Jane Austen's" critique of Mark Seem betrays her own clinical ignorance. His protocols are safe and effective. I highly recommend this book.
New Perspectives Good, and Traditionally Based.......1999-10-30
As a student of 'standardized' TCM, I find Mark Seem's approach refreshing. Doctors of old examined the body with their hands, and directly percieved the subtle Qi and it's state within the body. Actually palpating the body and seeing the truth and information there, instead of intellectually deciding on a diagnosis via symptoms of the patient(accuracy questionable), is something we can all learn from....that is, the hands on approach.

The BodyMind Connection.......2006-03-14
Human understanding of the connection between emotion and physical health remains elusive in Western Medicine. This provocative Eastern view gives us hope that reintegration of our selves after traumatic moments and the transformation of "negative" feelings is literally at our finger tips.
This book is one of the deepest explorations into the energy of healing and remains a much worn friend in my healing library.
A must have book for healing touch practitioners from all traditions. A must read for all of us who hope to heal ourselves.
Stellar.......2006-02-14
This book is an excellent compendium of information that relates bodymind experience to acupressure theory, five-element theory, and traditional chinese medicine. Fantastic companion to Iona Marsaa Teeguarden's Complete Guide to Acupressure.
Access the BodyMind dynamics of emotions.......2001-07-28
This book expains how emotions -in the Western sense - reflect energetic balance/imbalance -in terms of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Five Element Theory and meridians. Innovative graphics illustrate the complex dynamics. Numerous clinical examples are provided, couched in the beautiful and mystical poetry of Chinese Medicine and Philosophy, against a background of clinical western psychology. An absolutely essential volume for anyone, not weaned on these metaphors, but interested in holistic treatment, at any level. Beatifully written, deserves to be read and re-read.

Information we ALL need!.......2006-08-10
This book tells it like it is. I've always known the mind and body were profoundly connected - but I had never fully realized how my "self-talk" could affect my health. I no longer use phrases like, "My back is killing me!" Thanks so much to Barbara for her insights and for sharing her personal challenges with the world.
good health motivation.......2006-08-01
This book provides a great deal of insight into how important mind is over matter. If in your mind the illness you have takes over your life...then it will matter to you to read this book. If you or someone you know is either recently diagnosed or suffering from a potential serious illness, this book will be helpful to both you and them. Through the authors own experiences, you can easliy adapt her strengths to help better your own situation/disease.
Very true title.......2005-08-14
If you want to know why things happen to you, you should examine what you are saying, the book will open the door for you to know a lot more.
A Fantastic Guide to Getting Control of Your Own Health.......2003-12-16
"Watch what you say" is a primary message of Barbara Levine's groundbreaking book. She uses many real life situations to illustrate how our words can affect our health. Grounded and practical, she begins with her own dramatic story of healing from a brain tumor, and the lessons it taught her. It led her into an investigation of what makes people well and ill, and to look at the many scientific studies that show the link between language and disease. What I particularly like about this book is that it shows us the things that are entirely under our own control when it comes to our health; those things that are inside our own heads, and how we can take control of that aspect of ourselves to dramatically increase our level of well-being. As a practical tool for getting to the roots of what ails you, and making a shift, it's hard to imagine a better book.
Practical and heartfelt -- a worthy read........2003-12-15
Look before you leap. Think before you speak. No one makes a stronger argument for this imperative wisdom than author Barbara Hoberman Levine in the revised edition of Your Body Believes Every Word You Say.
There is nothing magical about the notion that what we believe we can achieve. Cognitive therapists have used this principal and the power of the mind with great success for decades. A similar and powerful premise is made here in Levine's book, where the importance of our expressions and words easily translate to the physical body.
There is nothing startling or difficult to digest about this concept. It is pure logic at work. Through countless clear examples, Levine lets us see for ourselves the immense power of words and how to turn our language around to benefit our mind, body and soul.
As often happens in life, we learn volumes of wisdom from difficult obstacles. Levine's own physical challenges taught her about the power of the mind-body connection and how one can easily live a more productive and positive life with the benefits of good health. Not only does Levine shares her pearls of wisdom with clear examples from her own experiences, but she offers powerful healing techniques that can easily be utilized by others. Exercises are offered to enhance what is learned in each chapter. Practical tools and heartfelt wisdom -- what more could you ask for from a publication? This book is highly recommended.

Dr. Seem proposes an integration of Traditional Chinese Medicine and psychosomatics in this model of health care that acknowledges the connection of body and mind.
Customer Reviews:
Nice introduction to Energetic Medicine.......2005-09-26
Dr. Mark Seem is a well known and respected Acupuncturist and founder of Tri-State Institute of Traditional Chinese Acupuncture in Stamford, Connecticut. The book presents theoretical foundations of the Acupuncture technique as practiced and taught by the author.
I read Bodymind Energetics about a year ago as part of my medical acupuncture study. It is a good introductory text for someone interested in Acupuncture and Energetic Medicine.
The book is accessible and well written; yes, as mentioned by the previous reviewer, it is repetitious at times, but I don't hold it against the author because the ideas advanced in the book are new for the majority of readers, and these concepts do require multiple different angles of presentations to make them clear.
One of the reviewers complained about the angry tone of the book. There is some truth in this observation. One thing we need to remember, though, is that the author of the book has Ph.D. in French Philosophy. I am not making a disparaging remark. Au contraire. What I am saying is that the author is a very intelligent and sensitive person (otherwise he wouldn't achieve what he has achieved and wouldn't be doing what he is doing!), but, judging by his (very elegant otherwise) writing style, the author's intellectual roots are undoubtedly Gallic with all the applicable stereotypes (see Monty Python and the Holy Grail or read Mark Twain's ramblings on the subject).
Just remember that there is plenty to learn from this book, and you will do much better paying attention to the content of the book, rather than tone with which it is written.
The one weakness of the book, in my opinion, is its cover: the picture of black human figure surrounded by energy field lines is somewhat misleading. I suspect that this picture scared off a lot of intended readers. Don't pay any attention to the cover: the book has nothing to do with Blavatskaya/Astral Body/Distance Healing/etc.
Discussing the Body-Mind Split.......2000-08-12
Mark Seems Bodymind Energetics addresses the issue of our understanding of the "physical" and "psychological" aspects of health. Seem covers some of the historical background to the "body-mind" split in western thinking and the practice of medicine. He uses models of thought taken from studies of the early pioneers of psycho-somatics, and models developed from ancient Chinese medical texts to discuss this 'split'.
This is an extremely interesting and thought provoking work on the subject.
Monotonous and close-minded.......1998-09-18
When I first read this book, I could not help but wonder why the author sounded so angry! The entire text could have been written in 20 pages, but tends to drag on monotonously, repeating statements many times in the same aggressive tone. The tone and repetition of the text tends to lead you away from the few morsels of interesting and useful information, such as the wonderfully concise overview of basic chinese medicine that even a lay person could understand. It is such a shame that this book was so horribly written with it's truly advanced use of the English language, that it is difficult to follow, understand, and even pick up again to finish. This is no light reading, folks.

A Powerful Tool.......2004-04-27
All I can say is, if you
don't have this book, it is well worth
the buy!
As a Massage Therapist and Energy Worker
I have often struggled with a way to explain
to my clients (without being to invasive)the Mindy/Body link,
especially if it is their first time being
"worked on" and they have had no prior experience
with Holistic Healing.
It has information on a wide range of ailments, aches and specific body language that helps the therapist to put into "everyday language" what the underlying cause may be linked to their client's dis-ease.
It also covers areas dealing with Quickening, Pre-birth,
Pre-conception and much more!
I find the author's explanations gentle but informative enough for my clients to begin to make the connection, which further
helps their healing process. Excellent, excellent book!
A must have for any Holistic Practitioner's Library!
This is the book we have all been waiting for!.......1999-09-22
I am so glad this book is available again. As a massage therapist and energy worker, people ask me all the time "What does a pain in this part of the body mean?" with this book I can tell them what energy or emotions are generally stored there. I have lent this book out over 20 times in the last 7 years. I am so thankful it is now available again for other people to buy. I have learned so much about how the words we say are connected to how we hold stress in our bodies. How a pain between the shoulder blades is often connected to unresolved relationship or career conflicts. People think I am physic when I ask them questions like "Did you feel like someone stabed you in the back around the time this pain started?" Then I lend them the book. I have found it very helpful in trama releases as well.
Customer Reviews:
A few pictures worth volumes.......2007-09-05
I have never reviewed a book before, but this cheesy-sounding title is hiding a gem. After reading a couple of overly mystical books and enduring a few nauseating workshop instructors (along with some good ones), the author's colorful illustrations and simple examples are refreshing and frankly far more powerful. And sometimes mildly goofy, but that's fine. After one read or listen, you'll have a 15-minute meditation memorized and ready to take on the road.
A 15-minute CD is included with the Book.......2005-12-28
"One of the most important secrets of New Forest meditation is the New Forest itself. Imagining yourself meditating in a beautiful natural setting has a profoundly nourishing effect on your entire bodymind and spirit." ." ~John Bright Fey
The New Forest Tai Chi DVD for Beginners was my introduction to master teacher John Bright-Fey's world of imaginative teaching styles. Now his books and CDs also present short routines to calm the bodymind.
Through this CD, you will enter a world where John Bright Fey's soothing voice leads you through enjoyable visualizations that will leave you with a comforting happy feeling of deep peace. If you have been feeling stressed, tired, depressed or even just can't think clearly, then meditation can give you an escape and encourage you to retune your body like a musical instrument. The benefits include a new clarity of thought and an enhanced immune system.
The first time you experience this morning cup of meditation, you may want to follow along in the book. You can either stand, lie on your back, sit in a chair or sit on the floor in a cross-legged position.
I found myself sitting for Internal Adjustments1-6, relaxing on my back for 7-9 and then sitting again for the deep breathing in section 10. You can also do this before you fall asleep at night.
There is also a routine at a glance page you can put on your refrigerator to remind you to meditate. The exercises help to generate energy that is comforting, grounding, nourishing, strengthening, outflowing, connecting, uplifting, balancing, protecting and intuitive.
I find meditation to be easier when I've exercised first and also enjoy having a cup of tea nearby to sip on because it warms the body in the morning. This allows me to relax into meditation and I truly enjoy imagining the different scenes or becoming a glowing flower. The flower in my mind glows with pink sparkles and spins, but you can imagine candle flames or a light bulb during section 9 in which you imagine energy shining through you.
It is quite amazing how the pictures you imagine make you feel more alive or more relaxed. You can truly control your energy, not unlike when you are doing Yoga.
Of all the meditation CDs I've tried in the past few years, this one is the most enjoyable and one I want to return to week after week. Once I complete the 15 minutes of relaxing visualizations, the colors in the room seem brighter, I have more energy and tension seems to have dissolved. This CD and book opens the door to a feeling of joy and contentment that can nurture your entire being. In my mind's eye, I had first imagined a forest, but the background when I started was somewhat pale and like a forest before the sunrise. When I was finished with my morning cup of meditation, it was like the sun was rising and brilliant colors filled my imagination.
Not only will you feel the healing results right after the meditation, you may experience new levels of happiness for days after a 15-minute session. Like a good cup of herbal tea, this book and CD will nourish and heal you and leave you refreshed.
