Prescription for Nutritional Healing by nutritionist Phyllis A. Balch and James F. Balch, M.D., has long been considered one of the most trusted, comprehensive sources on the mind-boggling array of vitamins, minerals, herbs, and other dietary supplements now available. Working from the premise that a good diet promotes good health, this third edition of PNH still starts with the basics: consume fresh produce, grains, and lean meats; avoid foods that are processed or high in saturated fat; cook using glass, stainless steel, or iron--never aluminum; and drink filtered water. The authors also stand by their claim that the government-prescribed recommended daily allowances are ridiculously low, and that the book's optimal daily intake for nutrients should be followed instead.

So what's new in the third edition? Along with now-accepted remedies, like zinc and echinacea for the common cold, the Balches also explore many of the newer supplements to hit the market: SAMe (recommended for depression and joint pain), phosphatidyl serine (mental acuity), red yeast rice (cholesterol), and 5-HTP (weight loss, insomnia, depression). You'll also find an expanded chapter on alternative therapies that encompasses Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine, along with a hefty section on pain control that offers a grab bag of options such as acupuncture, biofeedback, guided imagery, chiropractic care, and massage.

Still, the bulk of the book remains the more than 250 health conditions--from everyday problems such as insect bites and bad breath to serious diseases including bulimia, cancer, and AIDS--and the nutritional protocols the Balches recommend for treatment. Since any number of supplements can be taken for the same condition, the Balches make sifting through the glut of information a little easier by separating their nutrient recommendations into four categories: essential, very important, important, and helpful. And they take a lot of the guesswork out of buying supplements by listing the brands they know and trust. Once again, the authors have squeezed in an impressive amount of information, including valuable sidebars on topics such as the dangers of aspartame; how to choose a calcium supplement; common heart problems and procedures; cancer risk factors, diagnosis, and treatments; and sports nutrition. This is not relaxing reading, but it's enormously useful. While the material can be dense, the authors still manage to present it in a straightforward manner that's understandable even for readers without a medical degree. --Norine Dworkin

3 out of 5 stars Okay, but not great.......2007-10-11

I thought this book was okay, but I wouldn't call it a classic. I did hold onto it, and it is on my bookshelf, but I rarely refer to it. When I do, it's just to get a basic description of an illness, not for the remedies it recommends. I felt like it just repeated what everybody else is saying, and didn't really have any original information to offer.

5 out of 5 stars Prescription for Nutritional Healing 06.......2007-10-04

I am not a devout herbalist, but I don't like to take a lot of medications either. If I can heal myself or prevent problems with diet, exercise, therapies, vitamins, minerals, or herbal supplements, then I would prefer to!

I wanted one natural healing book. Just one- for reference. So I read through a TON of books at 2 different bookstores and at Whole Foods. I choose this one because it covered SO much.

It has sections on almost 300 ailments (for example: anxiety, hair loss, hypoglycemia, arthritis, stress, migraine, depression, indigestion, flu and bee-sting) and it lists the vitamins, minerals, and herbs good to use for each problem. Compared to my internet research, it recommends many of the same things and more. I love that it also gives advice on what not to take, what not to mix, how much, and what problems can arise (no other book seemed to do this as well). In addition, there is info on diet, exercise, and alternative therapies. In the front of the book, she explains herbs, minerals, the different types of enzymes, and more. I also enjoy the essential oils list in the back.

It is a little confusing when she lists some supplements by Brand Name (I don't like that). And the herbs are more of a post script to each list, but if you want more on herbs she does have a separate book just for that ("Prescription for Herbal Healing").

I am happy with just this one book- plus the advice of the wonderful folks at Erewhon and Whole Foods (who, as it turns out, reference this same book!).

5 out of 5 stars Great Reference Tool.......2007-09-28

What I love about this book is how thorough it is. Not only does it cover a lot of ailments, but when it lists helpful supplements, it explains exactly how they work, recommended dosage, and the importance of it. It also give suggestions for lifestyle changes (for example, foods to avoid, the importance of exercise, etc.) Amazing. It's organized well, you can look things up by ailment OR supplement.

5 out of 5 stars My go-to reference for family health..........2007-09-22

I have a bachelors degree in holistic health, and was introduced to this book years ago when I first began studying alternative medicine. I have used this reference time and time again in treating myself and my family for common ailments. It never fails to yield useful information, always directing the reader to conventional medicine for more serious illnesses. An extremely useful tool for family healthcare.

5 out of 5 stars Great Reference.......2007-09-18

This is a great big book with a wealth of information about a great number (a few hundreds) of ailments, what causing them, and how to deal with them the natural way. With close to one thousand pages this is a complete resource of medical problems from A to Z. It is well researched, well referenced, and well written. It is also very simple to use, all ailments being ordered in alphabetical order. It is an excellent reference book, a health bible that should be readily available in each household. If you have a health problem I suggest checking what this book will tell you about it, before going to your doctor.

Another book that I also highly recommend is Cure the Incurable

4 out of 5 stars Out of Date?.......2006-10-02

This five year old PDR Family Guide to Nutritional Supplements, first edition, Dec. 2001, is an excellent consise book and easy to read. However it is out of date when compared with PDR Health on-line. To get started this book is good. To get the latest information from PDR one has to go on-line and combining the two can be confusing. I'll not order until the second edition is released.

5 out of 5 stars I use it in my healing practice, and nursing practice.......2005-05-25

Note: First of all, there are 2 natural remedy PDRs, one for Nutritional rRemedies and Supplements, and another specifically for Herbal Remedies. You will NOT find herbal info in the nutritional PDR, nor nutritional supplements in the Herbal PDR.

I have subscribed to the PDR for Nutritional Supplements, as well as the PDR for Herbal Remedies, since they first were available. The Nutritional supplement volumes seem to come out with editions more often than the Herbal Remedies, probably because there are simply a limited number of herbs, and their uses have been well-documented for centuries, if not millenia. The updates of those volumes contain more updated research, and more information about side effects and interactions. The Nutritional Supplement volumes require revision sooner due to the greater amount of research into so many of the newly identified nutrients and their effects on the human body.

As a holistic practitioner who engages in multiple natural healing modalities, in addition to earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree, I use natural healing methods in treating my own medical disorders, and have successfully assisted clients to control blood pressure, reduce harmful cholesterol, eliminate allergic responses, quell the bouts of asthma, promote improved respiratory tract function, improve intestinal function and elimination, and restore restful sleep, as just a small sample of what can be achieved using natural methods, nutritional and herbal remedies.

My scientific background and training in nursing makes me especially cautious of overinflated claims about certain remedies, but it is wonderful to have the research listed in a respected and responsible publication, such as the PDRs, to provide allopathic physicians, among others, with the rationales and research that provide the basis for using the nutritional and herbal supplements in a holistic regime for healing.

I certainly do also keep up with the research and information from leaders in the natural health care field, but in presenting information that will be convincing to allopathic practitioners, and win them over to the side of the benefits of natural remedies, the information that comes from the PDRs holds a lot of weight, as it is a resource most physicians are used to depending upon.

I am now ordering the latest Nutritional PDR, and passing on my older volume to a nurse practitioner who is another formerly strictly allopathic practitioner to be won over to the side of natural interventions. This was due to the inability of one of her indigent clients to be able to afford the medication the NP was prescribing for her, and in desperation she was looking for someone well-versed in herbal or natural remedies. This person typically was presenting with blood pressures in the vicinity of 200/130, very very high. Someone referred her to me, and after careful assessment and medical history-taking, she was placed on a regimen of Omega-3/6/9 capsules, CoQ10, milk thistle, hawthorn, and a good multivitamin. By procuring this regimen online, at a low-cost site, the entire monthly regimen cost her less than $40, a fraction of what the pharmeceutical medication would have cost her. Within one week her blood pressures were in the range of 120/70, and stayed in that range. I provided both the client and her NP with thorough information supporting the use of every nutrient and herb, and much of it came from the PDRs.

5 out of 5 stars Brim Full of Information.......2001-11-18

Tired of getting your supplement information from the vitamin shop clerk? This is state of the art stuff. Finally here is a book that both the lay person and the physician can safely turn to. The author has no axe to grind. He neither overstates nor understates, but is carefully objective in his presentation and allows the evidence to speak for itself. Dr. Hendler brings to his subject an open mind, wide ranging intelligence, and a rigorous training in all of the relevant disciplines. He refuses to be a shill either for entrenched medical orthodoxy or starry eyed alternative approaches. The result is a cornucopia of information.

5 out of 5 stars A Critical Resource to Control Your Life Through Health Care.......2001-10-09

The PDR for Nutritional Supplements is the most well organized and substantive publication that I have ever used in over twenty years as a supplement consumer and one of the best literary purchases that I have ever made.

While other publications may purport to be "encyclopedic," they fall short of the mark in paying attention to detail. Dr. Hendler's PDR for Nutritional Supplements is a critical and necessary resource for anyone using nutritional supplements, functional foods and or herbs. The knowledge imparted here will allow you to take control of your life as it relates to health care and maintenance.

5 out of 5 stars great book.......2001-10-09

This book is fantastic. Finally a scientific approach to the complex and often confusing information about supplements. Dr. Hendler makes no unfounded statements and he provides unbiased and objective facts understandable to both the lay person and physician. He even shows us the molecular structures of the supplements. This is a great work by one of the long time leaders in the field.

1 out of 5 stars Bible?? The book is less then a inch thick!.......2006-07-18

Maybe its the beginners bible and not the holy bible size they were talking about. This book is for beginners only!! The main part of this book is recipes. If I wanted that I would have bought a recipe book not a book to teach me about diabetes nutrition. This is not a complete anything!!! Try Prevention The Sugar Solution. I am returning the "bible". What a waste of my money having to return this book. Not sure why it has so many stars.

5 out of 5 stars The Diabetes Food and Nutrition Bibld.......2006-03-19

This is a very informative book, with lots of tips. I've tried some of the recipes and they are good. I also purchased the book for a family member and they also found a lot of useful information in the book.

1 out of 5 stars Does Not Deliver What It Promises.......2004-08-16

I would not recommend this book for people who are trying to get their life together after a diagnosis of diabetes. I bought this book because its subtitle is "A Complete Guide to Planning, Shopping, Cooking, and Eating". It is none of those things.
I was particularly interested in the SHOPPING promise because I find that to be the most difficult part of managing my diet. Other books didn't have anything helpful, and despite its promise, this book doesn't either. One has to read through every single recipe, write down the ingredients of what you want to make, and then go out and get it. Just like every other book. So tell me: how does this help with "shopping"? I expected lists of basic staples in a diabetic's diet. There should be lists of "must-haves" for your pantry. This book lies about what it contains, and is sadly lacking in what it needs.
An expensive mistake, don't buy it.

4 out of 5 stars most helpful book so far.......2002-06-10

Now that the condition called "pre-diabetic" has been recognized by the medical profession, even more people need information on meals, recipes and menu planning to aid in blood glucose control. I have just recently been diagnosed as pre- or "borderline" diabetic. Pre-diabetes and diabetes are medical conditions that are vastly under the control of the patient. We have all heard that losing weight and increasing exercise are vital to controlling diabetes. At this point I have read about six books on diabetes and this one is by far the best. Some of the books were a complete waste of money, in my opinion; for example, "Tell Me What to Eat if I Have Diabetes" was for processed and fast food junkies. All of the books present information on goals for blood glucose levels, what are carbohydrates, etc. But for me, I needed help with menu planning, balancing proteins, carbos, fats, calories, increasing fiber, etc.

"The Diabetes Bible" does have workable recipes - the ones I have made were very tasty. The biggest shock comes when you actually measure the serving sizes specified. A 4-ounce apple did not exist in my grocery store - they were all 8 ounces. So, if you follow their menu plans (I used the 1,200 to 1,400 calorie plan), you can eat only half that apple. It is amazing how small a half-cup portion of cooked vegetables is or two ounces of lean protein is an incredibly tiny piece (I once virtuously ate a small fish fillet, only to find out that I had consumed "four exchanges"). And one cup of milk is only a few swallows.

My biggest complaint about the book is that many menus rely on reduced fat cheeses, "lite" sour cream and margarine, although they do admit you can used the real thing, but (obviously) eat even less of it.

It is no lie to say that controlling pre-diabetes or diabetes is a heck of a lot of work. Given the risks of not controlling these conditions - eye damage, peripheral neuropathy, risk of heart attack and stroke - patient motivation to lose weight, increase exercise, control blood pressure and blood glucose, reduce cholesterol, etc. should be high, but it certainly is no day at the beach. The "Diabetes Bible" at least gave me some place to start.

5 out of 5 stars More than one hundred healthful and tasty dishes.......2001-08-09

5 out of 5 stars The best book I have seen on this subject.........2007-08-16

Although this book is small if you look at the others closely they are full of general health info that is used to bulk them up to (ahem) 'Encyclopedic' proportions. Stop eating all simple sugars including lactose, take some healing herbs, prepare to feel like crap for several weeks while WWIII rages inside your body. Two or three months later you feel amazing!! So far I've lost 20 pounds of fat and only need 6 hours sleep instead of my usual 11. Pretty much a miracle. Try it.

2 out of 5 stars Boring!.......2006-11-03

This book was so dry and so boring. It was very clinical. I was hoping for a list of the sypmtoms of candidiasis and some helpful suggestions on how to control the condition. Most of the book was not helpful or useful to me.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource.......2006-08-27

The book is an excellent choice for anyone interest in the subject. I've bought and read 4 books on this subject (Complete Candida Yeast Guidebook by Jeanne Marie Martin, The Candida Albicans Yeast Free Cookbook by Pat Connolly, The Yeast Connection Cookbook by William Crook) but this one is the most conscise and yet it's offering all the answers. Dr. Murray offers a lot of suggestions on the diet and natural supplements that are essential for good health and boosting up an immune system. Medicine alone did not help me but combining the medicine with the diet recommendations found in this book showed results.

2 out of 5 stars I disagree.......2006-07-28

I bought this book since everyone was giving it 5 stars. The first part of the book was o.k., but then, it got into way too much detail. I found the descriptions of the cells, lymphs and technical names for every enzyme pretty boring. I had to make myself finish reading it. Buy it if you want to read every detail of the immune system. If you are like me and need something more basic, look on.

5 out of 5 stars Chronic Candidiasis by Michael Murray.......2005-10-19

This book was easy to read. Information was comprehensive. Instructions were simple to follow. Good organization of steps to follow in order to accomplish the elimination of candida. It's up to the reader to implement them. I recommend this book even if your familiar with this problem.

5 out of 5 stars nutritional excellence.......2007-08-28

I have grown weary of Health Shop and pharmacy employees whos expertise is limited to certain areas of medication and their interactions. I take many suppliments and could not get accurate information on interactions, and other detailed information necessary to make good informed choices. Until now. At times like this, I wish I'd gone to med school, or been a journalist, to be able to accurately and succinctly review this excellent book. Suppliments and other medications can be dangerous together, and it is imperative to be informed, so as to only take what's both necessary and healthful. At last a book that covers EVERY aspect of supplimentation, and nutritional therapy. It accurately covers interactions, ACCURATE dosage, and dangers associated. If like me, you are bombarded with information from the bottles of companies desperate to sell you their product, regardless if you really need it or not.. then this book will be a breath of fresh air for you. Nothing is left out, only pertinent information left in. A real treasure for the health conscious.

5 out of 5 stars The Bible of Nutritional Supplement Information!.......2007-01-07

This is an outstanding piece of work that Michael Murray has compiled! Whether you are a beginner or an expert in nutrition, you will find this book very insightful ! In this work he documents a comprehensive list of vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, nutrients, and glandular extracts. Mr. Murray also elaborates on the functions and uses of each to provide sound education to the reader. My favorite part of the book is that he includes many different lists of whole food sources to obtain everything listed above. For instance, when he discusses Magnesium, he breaks down what foods have the highest magnesium content and what foods have the lowest. This is an extremely valuable source of nutritional information and I would recommend this book to everyone!

4 out of 5 stars Frank Cooper - Australia.......2006-10-03

This is a valuable book for the layperson and professional, for the understanding of the complexities and properties of vitamins and minerals. However this book is now 10 years old and showing signs of age, and would benefit from a significant update, as some of the information is no longer applicable.

The section called "Understanding Fats and Oils" is probably the weakest link in the chain for this book, and the reader would be well guided to ignore this section. This is a shame because the effect of lipids on the human body is profound in terms of health benefits. To replace this section, the reader would be wise to read the publications written by Dr Mary Enig and Canadian Udo Erasmus, who are two of the leading research experts on the subject of fats and oils.

Also in this encyclopedia the section on cholesterol is also inaccurate. Better to read the books written on cholesterol by Swedish Dr Uffe Ravnskov, as well the recent book by Fitness Expert Anthony Colpo on cholesterol.

However as I mentioned before, this is an excellent encyclopedia, and I greatly look forward to a future update from the author to replace my well worn copy. Also a hard cover would be nice and I dont mind paying the extra cost. Whilst paperback is fine for books you read just once, hard cover is better suited to a reference book like this encyclopedia.

5 out of 5 stars If you have one book on nutritional supplements, this should be it. .......2006-09-20

This isn't the latest, but it's the best. If you have one book on nutritional supplements, this should be it. I'd read it before your first, next, or whatever visit to the nutritional supplement store or aisle.

AWESOME book. I have been buying books, CD's, videos since amazon.com first came on line...and this is the 1st time I felt compelled to write a review. I owned a copy of Earl Mindell's Vitamin Bible, but I was looking for more. I take about 9 vitamins a day & this book answered ALL of my questions and then some. I keep it at work & use it almost daily. I like the way you can find everything very quickly. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a lot of info.in one place.

3 out of 5 stars Good reference even though not up to date.......2003-01-01

I recently borrowed this book from the library. It is stock full of information, vitamins, minerals, herbs, symptoms, a little of everything. I especially liked the full explaination of vitamins and their attributes. The only thing bad about this book is that it isn't up to date with all the new herbs out on the market or new diseases and afflictions.

5 out of 5 stars An invaluable, comprehensive, "user friendly" reference........2000-08-07

Do you need food supplements? If so, which ones? And how much? Nicola Reavley answers these questions and many more in The New Encyclopedia Of Vitamins, Minerals, Supplements, & Herbs. Reavley points out that we're all different, and not everyone needs supplements. She emphasizes that supplements don't make up for a poor diet. Peo0le need first to have "a good understanding of the roles played by vitamins and minerals in health and disease." Then they need to understand how supplements are "affected by your age, sex, state of health, and lifestyle. Certain supplements can be harmful to certain people." She starts with a general description of vitamins and minerals and their roles in the human body. She explains how the Recommended Daily Allowances (RDA) are calculated and how to determine if those are adequate for your individual needs. With this, she includes a discussion of what constitutes a good basic diet. In some instances, people can get all the nutrients they need from their diet, and don't need to take supplements. The bulk of the book is devoted to an in-depth discussion of each vitamin, mineral, herb, and other nutrients. Other nutrients include substances like melatonin, shark cartilage, and coenzyme Q10. She starts each discussion with a "Quick Guide" which summarizes what the supplement does in the body, sources, RDA, interactions, and cautions. She then provides a complete information about that supplement. The final section of the book is a listing of common health problems, such as asthma, insomnia, and osteoporosis, with information on the causes and treatments for each. She describes the role of diet and nutritional supplements in preventing and treating those diseases. A glossary provides definitions of terms used in the book, and an extensive reference section enables readers to do their own research if they so desire. Reavley says that "as diet has a huge role to play in the prevention of disease, eating well and consuming adequate amounts of vitamins and minerals are vital for both present and future health." She wrote The Complete Encyclopedia Of Vitamins, Mineral, Supplements, & Herbs to provide the "necessary knowledge to make informed choices about the food you eat and the supplements you take." Readers will find that she has met her goal.

5 out of 5 stars PERFECT.......2006-06-26

Book was written by a true professional. I like books that repeats itself a little bit in each chapter. This is how a true journalist writes a book. It is very important to go over in each chapter a little bit of what what taught in the previous chapter, this is called repetive learning and the learning will stick with you longer. Very good written book.

1 out of 5 stars stupid book and waste of money.......2005-08-27

Ok, Cichoke is not wrong. But here is the BIG problem. He repeats himself constantly. He cuts and pastes the same exact phrases over and over and over again on almost every page. The sloppiness and pure laziness of this book defy the mind. It is immoral to say so little and repeat it so often to make a book look big and fat. This entire book could have been written in about 20 pages. If I had seen this book before I would never have bought it. Buy any other book on enzymes. There is a caveat, if you can not remember what you have read as you turn from one page to another, then you will love this book. Every page is a near repeat of the page before. On the plus side, the info is accurate. I am not accusing him of being wrong. An additional problem is his zealous plugging for specific brands of enzymes, for no reason. Does he own stock? Lazy author, not much info, repetitious. Makes all health enthusiasts look like opportunists. SHAME!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Encyclopedia of Enzymes!.......2001-07-16

Dr. Cichoke does a great job of giving the basics of enzyme therapy, that is the therapeutic value of increasing the enzyme content of your diet. The book covers enzymes in natural foods, such as amylases (starch digesters) in beet juice, as well as powerful enteric-coated enzyme pills, such as Wobe Mugos. The book is divided into multiple sections. The first 88 pages are an introductory course in enzyme types (such as amylase, lipase, pancreatin, papain, etc), the function of enzymes, as well as an encyclopedia of "enzyme helpers" such as vitamins, etc, and their individual benefits. In fact, the information is extremely useful even for those not interested in enzyme therapy, particularly the tables listing various phytochemicals and their uses.

The rest of the book is grouped by disorder, such as cancer or MS, with enzyme prescriptions for each disease. The guide also documents research on herbs, vitamins, and even more mainstream medicines. The end of the book has popular enzyme formulas, addresses of public information groups, and various enzyme therapies. If you have read "Prescription for Nutritional Healing" you will find the format of this book to be almost identical to that. The disease section is comprehensive, although often I feel as if Cichoke is stretching it a bit on some diseases, since research on enzymes and their relation to most diseases is just not available yet.

Overall this book is fascinating and in some ways it should be used as the guide for those discovering enzymes and their value in medicine and nutrition. The only complaint I have is that at times the book does not get technical enough. It just did not answer many of my questions, which I would assume are common (such as, "how much Pancreatin survives the stomach environment?" Or, "will cellulase enzymes increase the calorie content of cellulose rich meals?"). Of course, enzyme therapy is, despite starting at the turn of the century, in its infancy, and many of these answers might not even exist yet. Enzymes and their uses fascinate me, and if you are intrigued as well, this book will prove more than satisfactory.

5 out of 5 stars Most Comprehensive Enzyme Therapy Book for lay & docs.......1999-04-20

This magnificent piece of work is a fantastic resource. It contains information on every imaginable enzyme known to be therapeutic as well as actions, benefits, contraindications, etc. Along with suppliers and clinicians. A "Must-Have" for doctors interested in getting their patients well. A loving, easy to read thorough work...Thank You Dr. Cichoke! I will use this in my practice and my ed classes.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for doctor's office and for fireplace reading.......2003-12-27

This book is under the banner of the famed Linus Pauling Institute (Oregon State University) has it has a great foreword by Bruce Ames. Linus Pauling was one of the best thinkers of the last century and he recommended much higher than RDA / Daily Value intakes from a multi-vitamin as well as some other supplements in order to help procure optimal health.

There is no science yet to suggest that Pauling was wrong about such high dose supplementation --for example to lower blood-toxin homocysteine, the most likely cause of most heart disease, some cancers and Alzheimer's disease. However, the medical world is slow embracing the evidence supporting this approach but that is changing.

This book is an important and tightly edited work that will help practicing physicians and interested lay people with factual data, pointers and references and even the most knowledgeable person will surely pick up important health information they would otherwise have missed.

This is a well organized handbook with 27 chapters for the individual vitamins and minerals and their effects, sources and therapeutic indications and drug interactions.

This book has "Tolerable Upper Levels" tables to satisfy even the most conservative physician but it must be said that this heading represents a level that prevents the most uncommon or even trivial interactions, and a level that may well be much below "Optimal Levels" as suggested by Pauling, and which are likely to promote health in the great majority of people.

The book would benefit from a "Pauling Proposed Probable Optimal Levels in Most" table and from the inclusion of chapters for what used to be named vitamin F, with the F from "Fat", i.e. the essential omega-3 and omega-6 oils, think of them as vitamins F-3 and F-6. Present intakes of omega-3s are well below adequate levels while omega-6 (linoleic acid from most vegetable oils) may well represent our most common "vitamin overdose".

The challenge of the new nutrition is figuring out the "Long-Latency Deficiency Diseases", LLDD's if you wish, caused by the insufficient intakes over time of one or several nutrients, from vitamin D and calcium for bone health, to the homocysteine-lowering trio of folic acid, B6 and B12 for heart and other diseases.

This book builds a solid foundation with what is known, it is without technical errors and it is clearly presented. Vital in a doctor's office and much recommended for the interested lay person. .....

1 out of 5 stars A Total Waste of Money-A Big Disappointment.......2006-04-02

This LITTLE Booklet does not provide comprehensive information about vitamins and minerals. Short questions and answers do not give enough information to be of any help. You will be very disappointed with this booklet if you are searching for in depth guidance. The title is very misleading.

4 out of 5 stars Everything You Wanted to Know!.......2006-02-25

I found this book helpful and used it in conjunction with his other book 8 weeks to Optimum health.

5 out of 5 stars Health Insights on Every Page.......2006-02-01

Vitamins! If popping a morning dose is something you do before you are fully awake because your mother told you to do it, Dr. Weil alerts you to the importance of each component in keeping you at your best. A readable introduction.

4 out of 5 stars Small but usefull.......2004-02-25

This book is very small and simple yet it is good for a very quick reference to get you started on the right track. It is not detailed but helpfull - worth the price as long as you don't pay for shipping.

4 out of 5 stars Good supplemental information.......2001-12-03

I quickly found out what the "Ask Dr. Weil..." series of books are like. I have read two of Dr. Weil's full length books and was expecting more of the same. This book is 75 pages of Question and Answer format articles about vitamins and some herbal remedies, almost like a high quality Internet FAQ.

The book is interesting with a number of specific recomendations on how to take vitamins for particular illnesses. It is good information for the price (...).

If you have read one of Dr. Weil's previous full length books that deal with vitamins you will feel like you are reading a condensed version of the same information. Like all of Dr. Weil's books there is a good Resources section to help you find more in-depth information.

4 out of 5 stars A book your doctor can learn from.......2002-09-06

As a hypoglycemic, I am trying to find out what I can do to keep my blood sugar level. Dr. Murray provides the reader with more suggestions than just eating right and exercising. The addition of supplements is very helpful. He also educates on the connection between hypoglycemia and diabetes. This is important for hypolycemics to know since it is very possible for this condition to turn into diabetes.

I highly recommend Hypoglycemia: The Classic Healthcare Handbook, by Jeraldine Saunders and Harvey M. Ross in addition to this book.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to read, clear and to the point!!!!.......2001-01-31

I have low blood sugar and throughout the past few years I have read many books on the subject of sugar. In fact tonight I was reading; The Sugar Addict's Total Recovery Program. As I was reading this book I was getting frustrated at how wordy the book was and how wordy the other books had been that I had read before. The book by Michael T. Murray is clear and to the point. It's an easy read but invaluable for the information it conveys. It is definitely my favorite book and I have been recommending and purchasing it for friends and family for years.

4 out of 5 stars Should be Updated with more emphasis on Fibre content !.......1999-04-03

1996 is almost light years away from all the new nutrient info available today. I have both encyclopedias that Dr. Murray has authored, & they are more recently published than this book.

5 out of 5 stars Information with details, research and guidance.......1998-11-05

Murry's book gives so much information on the subjects of diabetes and hypoglycemia. It was also nice to see the two together since they do have a relation. His guidelines are very detailed and easy to understand. This book has helped me and has given me more of the information that I have been searching for. I would definitely recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book full of hard-to-find information !!.......1998-03-17

This book provides information that I've looked for, but never found, in other books on Diabetes. It gives a wealth of info on diet, vitamins/minerals, and general nutrition for diabetics. All references are footnoted, and most advice is accompanied with detailed medical explanations. Other books on diabetes seem to give a lot of advice, without explaining how the conclusions were reached, or what pertinent research was done. Not so with this book! It has been a BIG help in finding very important information, and being a great general guide to subjects that are critical to diabetic well-being!
