Book Description

From Anna Quindlen, acclaimed author of Blessings, Black and Blue, and One True Thing, a superb novel about two sisters, the true meaning of success, and the qualities in life that matter most.

It’s an otherwise ordinary Monday when Meghan Fitzmaurice’s perfect life hits a wall. A household name as the host of Rise and Shine, the country’s highest-rated morning talk show, Meghan cuts to a commercial break–but not before she mutters two forbidden words into her open mike.

In an instant, it’s the end of an era, not only for Meghan, who is unaccustomed to dealing with adversity, but also for her younger sister, Bridget, a social worker in the Bronx who has always lived in Meghan’s long shadow. The effect of Meghan’s on-air truth telling reverberates through both their lives, affecting Meghan’s son, husband, friends, and fans, as well as Bridget’s perception of her sister, their complex childhood, and herself. What follows is a story about how, in very different ways, the Fitzmaurice women adapt, survive, and manage to bring the whole teeming world of New York to heel by dint of their smart mouths, quick wits, and the powerful connection between them that even the worst tragedy cannot shatter.

2 out of 5 stars shallow.......2007-09-27

It's hard for me to believe how someone who could write a novel as brilliant as "One True Thing" and also so many fabulous columns, can write a book like Rise and Shine, that falls so far short of a promising mark.

I had great hopes for this book because Quindlen has handled family subjects so well before in One True thing, and because it's such a promising subject -- two sisters, one the 'show pony' and the other the mule. Kind of similar to the conflict in One True Thing, the conflict between the "Jane" and "Elizabeth" female roles.

But unlike One True Thing, this book steps back from really engaging. It's hard to know why. The author had the talent. Either she's not willing to sweat a little and pull out the stops to write such a novel, or perhaps she is just a little afraid to really take on the subject and just skirted the edges. We all derive such inspiration from our personal lives and it's hard to play around with living inspirational subjects, something that wasn't an issue in One True Thing. Or perhaps the old saying is true, that everyone has one great novel in them. I don't know. But Rise and Shine left me flat, and in spite of its great promise proved to be a shallow and unengaging read.

2 out of 5 stars Underwhelming.......2007-09-21

The premise of this story was intriquing and promising, but the telling of the story and the characters proved disappointing. It felt formulaic with characters who were not especially likeable, interesting or inspiriring, particularly Megan. I lost interest early on and didn't really care what happened, but continued through it because I expected more and better from Anna Quindlen. Didn't get it...she struck out this round. Everyone's entitled to an occasional dud.

4 out of 5 stars A Fantastic story .......2007-08-17

I have always enjoyed Anna Quindlen's books and Rise and Shine was just another great read. Her writing style in this book was fresh and her characters were realistic and the dialog was excellent. A great read and I would gladly recommend this to anyone.

4 out of 5 stars A beautifully written novel.......2007-08-06

I enjoyed Rise and Shine, and found it a joy to read. Anna Quindlen's words flow like poetry as the plot unfolds. The story of the Fitzmaurice sisters is engaging- I read this book in 2 days, as I was not able to put it down. The story was not predictable- I liked the plot twists throughout. Rise and Shine examines many different topics- from the bond of sisterhood, the plight of the impoverished, marriage, motherhood, and finding one's way in the world. I have read several other books by Anna Quindlen, but Rise and Shine really does shine above the rest. It is her best work yet!

3 out of 5 stars Rambling Thoughts.......2007-07-27

It took me 3 tries to get into this book as the rambling never seemed to stop. It was like being inside the character's mind ALL the time. The story line was interesting enough after I finally got into it but I kept wanting to quit reading it until I was about halfway through the book and realized by this point I might as well see how it ends. The end was a downer though.

4 out of 5 stars Incredible You.......2007-09-14

Great, except one complaint. I use stories as part of my teaching art to kids, and it can't be included in my class as "belief in God" has to be learned in the home.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Childrens book.......2007-05-07

This is excellent for children to learn early on that they are wonderful no matter what happens. Great for self confidence to help them thur the difficult situation of growing up.

If you have children this is an excellent book for them.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, wonderful book!!.......2007-02-20

This was bought for my 8 yr old daughter. I also bought his other great childrens book Unstoppable Me. These books teach children great leesons on how to be themselves. To think, act, and decide things for themselves. My daughter is a very positive girl, but when something bothers her, she keeps at it for a while. After reading these books a few times, I noticed an even more positive child. She comes home from school saying her day was great and she didn't let anyone bother her. If you are on the fence about buying this book, jump down and put in your cart right away!!

5 out of 5 stars Wondeful Book.......2007-02-02

This book is an incredible and inspiring work that expresses Universal Truths to our precious children. I have read it several times to my infants and will use it throughout their development. In addition, it was a part of my inspiration to write a childrens book titled, Daddy What is Success, which will be released later this year from Loving Healing Press. We need to educate our children on the imporatnt things in life from the beginning.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for your child's library.......2007-01-18

I have two young children {3yrs. & 5yrs.} who are very expressive and sensitive with their thoughts, as well as others. I found this book to be a great way to further educate them on how to feel proud and deal with frustration and/or challenges.

to basic ok for sailboats not much for other rigging

3 out of 5 stars Good book but missing key information.......2006-02-21

This book has LOTS of really good information. But it is missing some significant stuff, Brion. PLEASE PLEASE do another addition and include SOME information about the following:

1. Chainplates. Nothing. How is a proper chainplate shaped, mounted, doubled, etc? Where do they go? What should you consider when changing from single boomking backstay to double backstays?

2. Bowsprits. Hardly a word. How is a proper bowsprit mounted? What kind of materials are appropriate for a bobstay? etc.

3. Stemheads. Hardly a word. Come on, what good is a rig if it isn't mounted to something????

4. Mast steps. The rig seems to float in air with this book, and no proper consideration is given to how it MOUNTS TO THE BOAT.

Other than that, it is a great book. Lots of good info, formulas, etc. Lots of great knots, lots of funny quips, good explanation of how single and double spreader rigs are stayed and shrouded.

But most of us also have boats to go along with our rigs, and it would be nice to have a WHOLE CHAPTER on how the rig connects to the boat, because many of us need to maintain, repair, and improve that part of the rig as well.

Good book, but it is incomplete as currently published.

5 out of 5 stars The Thoughts of a REAL RIGGER.......2004-06-19

As a rigger myself, i thoroughly enjoyed this book and found it most informative and useful for my trade. However, there was little or no mention of brews OR 3 leets - surely this is an integral part of being a RIGGER? Also, there is only one rigger.

Me!

Oh, and Ryan Jendoubi.

5 out of 5 stars The only thing like it for traditional craft.......2003-12-04

Brion Toss has become "da man" in modern rigging in many ways, and a lot of that is attributable to this great book. It's a big, thick thing, loaded with information, not all of it easily absorbed on the first read. It's meant to give you a firm grounding in what rigging is, what it does, and how to inspect and maintain your own rig, how to adjust it, how to replace worn sections. Will it tell you everything you need to know to design a rig from the ground up on a serious racing yacht? Heck, no. It isn't meant to. What this book does is give you the tools you need to approach your own rig without fear and trembling - to realize that, after all, it's just a bunch of parts, and that you can comprehend and work with those parts, understand their roles, and get the most from your boat. Will you be forever independant of professional riggers? Probably not. But it goes a long way toward making that a realizable goal, if you apply yourself. And it should be known that this book is especially strong on traditional rigs, the more traditional the better. You'll learn how to worm, parcel, and serve, how to lace deadeyes, and why galvanized is great and stainless isn't stainless. And if that last sentence frightens you, you're probably not in the intended demographic. Rod rigging and carbon fiber masts are mentioned, at best, in passing, and largely for comic relief. Keep that in mind. Makes an absolutely perfect companion to Marino's "Sailmaker's Apprentice."

2 out of 5 stars A Simple Compilation of Rigging technique.......2002-08-24

THE COMPLETE RIGGER'S APPRENTICE by Mr. Brion Toss is a no-brainer simple compilation of standard rigging technique. Most of which can be found by reading past editions of old rigging manuals and from the writings of the International Guild of Knot Tyers, or from company product manuals. Nothing new or original has been done in this work; and the 'Compilation' of any subject matter has always been considered a cheap way of getting published.

Book Description

This little light of mine,

I'm gonna let it shine.

Let it shine,

let it shine,

let it shine.

With a kaleidoscope of color and cut paper, Hans Christian Anderson Award nominee and two-time Coretta Scott King Award winner Ashley Bryan celebrates three favorite spirituals: "This Little Light of Mine," "Oh, When the Saints Go Marching In," and "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands." The power of these beloved songs simply emanates through his joyous interpretations. Come, sing, and celebrate!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Let the sun shine in.......2007-09-30

You could take the amount that I know about African-American spirituals and fit it into the hollow of the ear of a flea with room to spare, I think. Put bluntly, I don't know much. As far as I can figure it my spiritual knowledge begins with the song "This Little Light", continues through "When the Saints" and ends somewhere around "In His Hands". Awfully considerate of Mr. Ashley Bryan to select those three songs in particular for his picture book collection of three classic spiritual songs then, eh? Earlier in the year I sent out a query asking for people to tell me about the books that could win the Caldecott and the title that got the most mentions was "Let it Shine". A book that I had not A) Heard of or B) Seen. I'm correcting this great wrong right now and though I'm not the kind of person who normally goes gaga over cut paper, Mr. Bryan has done some pretty slick stuff with just some colored pulp, a pair of scissors, and some of the finest folk songs in the world.

From the very first page Ashley Bryan's vibrant images just leap at you. Three spirituals vie for your attention. In "This Little Light of Mine" children are seen carrying lights in all kinds of containers and sources as the words to the song appear below. With each verse, Mr. Bryan finds an eclectic way to bring these lyrics to life. The same can be said for the other songs as well. Within an ever shifting series of hues, tones, shades, and colors, people are seen praying and singing. They laugh and dance. "Oh When the Saints Go Marching In" shifts from light to dark and the book ends with a blow-out production of "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands".

I was first introduced to Mr. Bryan's work years ago when he wrote the Coretta Scott King Award winning title, Beautiful Blackbird. For some reason, at that time I never really realized what kind of paper the man worked with. Not fancy self-pressed sheets of tissue or lacey linens. No, Mr. Bryan is a master of a material that even the youngest child will instantly recognize: construction paper. I mean, it's pretty cool when you sit down and think about it. Art teachers and Sunday school teachers could probably have a field day with this book. They could charge their own kids to come up with their own stories or images with the songs that they like. There are possibilities galore.

I was grateful for the back matter in this book too. If you're going to make a title that consists wholly and entirely of three songs then it would be a crime not to include a little sheet music in there. Sheet music there is, and ah-plenty. A short note from the author too, explaining the roots of Spirituals and their importance. And of course the endpapers of this book are practically worth the price of admission alone. In both the front and the back of the book are two hands, undulating and reflecting a host of different colors. It all looks so straightforward until you notice that Bryan has been able to create the illusion of light playing over paper by constantly changing the shades of each finger on the hand. I was amused to also see the Xeroxed photographs of the scissors that Mr. Bryan must have used to cut out all these thousands and thousands of paper pieces.

Sometimes it's difficult to find quality Christian children's books. There are some umpteen bazillion Christian publishers out there, many of them churning out books for kids every year. Still, once in a while you need to look outside this closed little world to find the real gold. "Let it Shine" will make so many people happy. People looking for a great selection of music. People looking for something Christian. People looking for a title that'll involve African-American history and a great contemporary artist. It's all here and it's all bound to make a whole host of folks very very pleased. As I may have said before, cut paper doesn't usually make my little heart go ah-pitter pat, but for Ashley Bryan I will make an exception. Stamp a big old "NECESSARY PURCHASE" all over this puppy.

5 out of 5 stars His Mother's Scissors.......2007-06-02

Of the thousands of Spirituals created by African-American slaves, Ashley Bryan chose to illustrate three of his favorites -- "This Little Light of Mine," "Oh ,When the Saints Go Marching In," and "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands." He took two pairs of scissors inherited from his mother and colored papers and created exquisite collage illustrations bursting with color that sweep and swirl across double-page spreads.

The artist, who frequently works in primary colors, has chosen a different palette of exciting, compelling, complimentary colors with yellows and golds, blues and purples, and browns predominating. Without a
speck of white background showing through, his stylized, multi-layered collages of flora and fauna, and people, mostly children in silhouette, dance across the pages. On one spread, illustrating the verse,
"Don't let Satan blow it out," two candle-holding children in bright colors face a swirling mass of cool grays, blues, and greens. It represents Satan trying unsuccessfully to blow out the children's lights. It looks ominous without being frightening. Filled with meaningful images, such as the image for God from the Ibo people of Nigeria, Bryan has an original, unequaled mastery of form and color. This book is a tour-de-force that is as beautiful from a distance as it is close up.

5 out of 5 stars Let It Shine.......2007-02-13

This is a beautifully illustrated presentation of three spirituals. Ashley Bryan uses cut-paper collage masterfully to show the message behind the lyrics. These illustrations offer many opportunities for discussion. The three spirituals are ones familiar to most children: This Little Light of Mine, When the Saints Go Marching In, and He's Got the Whole World in His Hands. The book is a wonderful way to make a connection between the library and music class and is especially effective in the younger grades. During Black History Month, it is a wonderful way to show the great influence of African American music in the American musical experience.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great advice, poor accent.......2004-03-02

These best kept secrets aren't very well kept secrets, because I knew most of them already. I heard some of these secrets from other sources before I heard them from Peter Thomson. However, they are great communication skills and they do work. I just didn't like Peter Thomson's low-pitched English accent and voice very much. I found it hard to concentrate on what he was saying even when I was using some of his listening techniques. I had to turn the volume way up and the bass way down on my car stereo in order to digest what he was saying. Maybe his book would be better for me. Overall, it's a very good audio cd if you can stand to listen to it. (4.5 stars)

5 out of 5 stars Listen to this to improve your communication skills!.......2004-03-01

Peter Thompson gives a comprehensive method of improving your communication skills. He gives 9 "secrets" and expounds on them, giving examples, defining them, and tell you how to improve them. These secrets (not in any particular order) include active listening, using body language, asking questions, and others.

The great thing about it is that it is entertaining and practical. I enjoyed listening to it and then trying to apply them in my life. Any person in business needs these skills, and I would say anyone can benefit from it, since we all communicate with others (well, unless you are a hermit in the mountains I suppose).

He also gives tips on how to better practice these skills and use the audio. Overall, it was a great program.

It is also a highlight in a continuum of virtuoso performances by the man everyone turns to for irresistible romance, cliff-hanger suspense, and the totally unexpected.

1 out of 5 stars Very disappointed.......2006-08-25

I generally like Sheldon's "beach" reads. Usually great fun which decent premises. I'm not hard to please. However, this offering was dismal.

Storylines were picked up and dropped without resolution. Most of the characters were grossly underdeveloped or mere stereotypes. You know going into a Sheldon book that it's not going to be an English Lit assignment, but this one was weak in comparison with his other selections.

2 out of 5 stars Flat, but fast.......2006-07-07

This book was something that I read in one day, just to pass the time. I really didn't care about the characters, and Lara seemed just too unreal to be true. She was too much of Scarlet O'Hara in her dealings with a real estate world dominated by men. I only finished it to find out what crisis happened that gave her an empty birthday party, but when I finally came to the end, it wasn't too satisfying.

3 out of 5 stars The Reader Befriends this Tyrant.......2005-04-27

In this rags-to-riches story, we follow the life of Lara Cameron from her beginnings in Nova Scotia to the United States as a young businesswoman. She emerges from being poor to a real estate developer worth millions, using whatever is necessary to close the deal, be it her brain or her body. Lara's power revolves around the empire she builds (mainly hotels and commercial buildings) and nothing will stop her. She drugs investors and torments tenants to make them leave property she wants to rebuild. Sound disgusting? Not at all!

You'd think with these characters, the reader would hate Lara, but Sidney Sheldon instead shows us her independence, courage and a determination for self-preservation to the point of the reader becoming Lara's ally. The most dramatic evidence to support this devotion is when Sheldon plays on our feelings for Lara during a series of events that could not only leave her penniless but could also convict her of crimes she appears to have committed on her path to the top. Instead of cheering for her demise, I found myself rooting for Lara to once again be successful.

Sidney Sheldon masterfully weaves past and present events to give the history of Lara without losing the reader to boredom. The ensemble cast of support characters are not as vivacious as Lara, but still vivid in their own right.

This tale has enough intrigue and drama to keep even the most finicky reader entertained. I found it an enjoyable way to spend a few days, much like a walk in the city.

5 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-02-17

This book is on of the best books i have ever read. It takes the story of a young modern woman and tells you how she can change from rags to riches. I was so into the book, I just couldn't put it down. I reccomend this book to anyone. Sidney Sheldon at his best!!!

5 out of 5 stars Splendid.......2004-12-02

Lara Cameron wants everything, but it takes some ruinous circumstances to make her realize she has more than she needs.
By 20, Lara was a millionaire intent on conquering Chicago. A couple of years later, takes on New York, and the world.
From Nova Scotia to Chicago, New York to Amsterdam, The Stars Shine Down describes the life of a woman who knew what she wanted and was willing to pay the price to get it.
Lara Cameron comes off as a flawed, lovable, and tragic heroine; Paul Martin, as a vengeful lover; and Howard Keller, as the apotheosis of passion out of control.
Sheldon gives a stellar performance; this is a book to fall in love with.

      Book Description

It begins with a phone call. It could have been his best friend, or the phone company trying to get him to make one more switch. Instead, it's the older brother he hasn't seen in years informing Terry Shine that their father is lying in a hospital bed unable to speak, bleeding in the brain. Terry and his four brothers rush to the hospital and prepare for the end, but nothing could have prepared them for what is to come.

"Old people are supposed to die," Terry acknowledges in a whisper of resignation. "Yeah, but fathers aren't," his brother Bill responds. Suddenly, five estranged siblings are plunged together into a bewildering world of medical choices and living wills -- of hours sitting by their father's bed, begging him simply to blink, to squeeze a hand, to nod. With no formal guidelines to follow, Terry and his brothers fumble along while their helplessness makes them focus on absurdities: What kind of car does each doctor drive? Which vending machine has the best Danish? They bring in a boom box and some of their father's CDs, trying everything in their power to drive the life back into him. They keep trying until sheer exhaustion leads them to the brink of acceptance. But, as the Shine family discovers, there is nothing that trains us to navigate death's terrain, and nothing we can do to come out of the experience unscathed: death slams us in ways we can never possibly have fathomed.

At once heart-wrenching, insightful, and piercingly witty, Fathers Aren't Supposed to Die masterfully captures the devastating experience of trying to come to terms with a parent's death.

5 out of 5 stars This book may be small.........2007-08-29

This book may be small but it is a memoir packed with information. It was a very good read on many levels..family relationships and death and dying; those two are the main themes. The author writes with a hint of mystery and I liked that touch to the memoir.

5 out of 5 stars Death Means Never Having to Say You're Normal.......2000-05-21

( )...The only words that miss the mark of literaryexcellenceare on the cover of T.M. Shine's remarkable tale.

Thisain't no how-to anything or a cry on Oprah's wide shoulders. This is something wonderfully other.

If Elizabeth Kubler-Ross met Carl Hiaasen, T.M. Shine would be their bastard child. This book is laugh out loud funny, except when it's ripping your guts out.

Bill Moyers sells Shine short when he alliterates in his testimonial that "Fathers . . ." is "marvelous, moving and memorable."

It is marvelous and moving. Quite so. But there are whole pages you'll hope aren't memorable, because feeling their wrenching impact once is as much as a person ought to bear.

Nice going Mr. Shine. Now please remind the folks at Amazon.com that people who read shouldn't be judged by their books' covers. END

5 out of 5 stars Shared experiences, shared healing........2000-05-09

I bought this book shortly after the death of my own father, and the subsequent reawakening of my friendship with my sister. I found the emotions and the passions in this book to resonate very deeply within my being - helping me to heal, since I learned that my feelings are common, valid and shared.

4 out of 5 stars Poignant and compelling.......2000-04-11

This is a poignant, compelling story that those of us who are baby-boomers will soon experience ourselves, if we haven't already. Mr. Shine bears all - his personal pain, frustrations and annoyances - dealing with the inevitable death of his father and realizing the experience is bringing him close to his brothers once again and the past they share. He indicts the medical community that, he felt, treated his father as a temporary occupant of a hospital bed. Like impatient FAA air traffic controllers, nurses and doctors were unwilling to be inconvenienced by adult children who were reluctant to let the scheduled departure take off on time. A quick and fulfilling read.

      5 out of 5 stars A grand journey.......2000-03-26

I've read Shine since he wrote for The Miami Herald's Tropic Magazine. He's an undiscovered master. This book takes his readers on a painful but rewarding journey--the death of his father. It's entirely worth your time, even at double the price.
