Inspiring, funny, appropriate and real.......2007-06-16
I stumbled upon this book and am so glad I did.
The author has an obvious love and passion for Jesus and a desire to tell others about how to be a godly and virtuous woman. Forget "The Rules" - Read and apply the principals outlined in the book and fall in love with the Savior. In a culture that forces one to immediate gratification, this book will inspire and motivate you to pray for your husband to FIND you ("He who finds a wife finds a good thing") while you are pursuing God's plan for your life. In addition to inspiring single women, this book also encourages married women and provides practical advice to becoming an irresistable wife.
The book is easy to read, humorous, points to Jesus, scripturally based and applicable for today. I like the use of scriptural stories which illustrate not only how to be a godly and faith inspired woman, but how the scriptures are truely timeless and relevant. She also starts each chapter with a prayer - beautiful, powerful and authentic prayer - preparing the heart of the reader to greater faith.
practical, down to earth advice.......2007-05-15
I found this to be a very down to earth book with practical advice. I have begun applying some of Michelle's principles and am finding that they really do work. Recently divorced after 28 years of marriage, I was a little unsure of how to approach dating again. I am now in a new relationship. This handy reference has helped my self assurance and I am using my power much more effectively than I ever would have otherwise. Thanks, Michelle!

A NEW WOMAN.......2007-01-05
WOW! This book was so awesome...again, the title would make you think you would become so intriguing and irresistible you'd snag your next mate. NOT SO!
This book helped you to wash away the residue of old hurts and wrong mindsets. To have a heart for the Lord! SO WONDERFUL!
I bought 8 copies of this book for friends and family. It was so life changing I had to share this wealth of knowledge.
a must read for all women.......2006-10-12
I wish that I could have read this book when I was single, because I would have avoided a lot of heartache. This book helped me even as a married woman to make my relationship better. This is the best book I have ever read about relationships. This is her best!

A Smart Book for Everyone.......2007-01-10
A Cardiologist writes this book in lay-man's terms. It is well-written at an appropriate level for a reasonably intelligent person. Dr. DeVane explains concepts well, makes the topic interesting and includes new advances. His holistic approach is practical and easy to read. I buy this book frequently and give it for birthday and Christmas gift giving.
GREAT BOOK AND A GREAT READ!!.......2006-04-13
This is the best book I've read that covers heart disease detection, prevention, and reversal PERIOD. A mandatory read if you have heart disease in your family!! I've read many of these types of books because I have heart disease in my family and have been dealing with genetic high cholesterol my whole life. Everything you need to know about heart disease in one book...it's like a complete handbook on heart disease.
The first part deals with what it is actually like to have a heart attack and what to do to stay alive...this is worth the price of the book alone. The author believes that absolutely NO ONE should ever have a heart attack much less die from one with a little proactive work from you and your doctor.
The book outlines all the various ways to properly test the likelihood of heart disease (just one example: Don't just take a cholesterol and stress test; but actually testing the size of your body's cholesterol may be more valuable to know since you can have a heart attack with as little as 30% blockage and traditional stress test only detects blockage of 70% or greater) This book is absolutely full of this type of useful information which can keep you around for a very long time.
Also, I really liked the way this book has all the up-to-date medial detection and medical treatment technology and goes way beyond the basic stuff you see in all the other medical publications (Details the different types of cholesterol tests, stress tests, heart scan technology, etc.). Also runs through the good points and bad points from a cardiologist standpoint of the more popular diets that people use (instead of just singling out fat as the culprit like every other medical publication.)
This book is technical but simple for the lay person to understand because of the easy explanations Dr. Devane uses. The book gives you today's most up to date tools to PROPERLY detect and reverse heart disease. Just knowing all the facts that are out there makes it easier to motivate yourself to take control and responsibility over making proper decisions if you or someone you love has to deal with heart disease.
GREAT BOOK AND A GREAT READ!!

Customer Reviews:
This book changed my life!!!!.......2003-09-29
I read this book about a year and a half ago and have since lost 55 pounds! Everything in this book makes so much sense, you'd be a fool not to follow it. Everyone asks me what sort of diet I went on to lose the weight and everyone gets the same response from me, "I never went on a diet, I changed my life." That is the whole essence of the food and exercise parts of this book. It focuses on "life changes" rather than dieting. I had already quit smoking about a year before reading this book, but even that section was helpful to me. If you're ready for a life change... READ THIS BOOK!
Customer Reviews:
Mouth watering!.......2007-06-02
This book is awesome! Very few ingredients are needed and ALL of them you can find at a grocery store. Mouth watering pictures show you what it is suppose to look like. Has many breakfast and appetizer recipes along with many other dinner and desser recipes. Has nutritional values for each recipe, tells pre times, cook times, and how many it serves. Plus, I like how each recipe has a 'Health Hint' and a little history about the recipe...'Way Back When' and also 'Secret to Success'. I highly recommend this recipe book and I use it constantly! Buy it, you won't be disappointed.

These Heartsmart recipes, endorsed by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, come from the kitchen of a Hong Kong-born chef, restaurant consultant, and writer--and they are scrumptious. You'll discover a whole new world of flavors, textures, and ingredients, one with a rainbow's variety of vegetables, whole grains, and limited amounts of well-seasoned meats. Several rich-tasting (but butter- and oil-free) stocks will help you get the most out of every recipe; they enhance the flavor of any ingredient, take little time, and freeze beautifully for future use. 100 easy-to-follow, lower-fat, lower-sodium dishes include such delicacies as Prawns with Cashews, Singapore Stir-Fried Noodles, Spicy Tangerine Beef, and Stir-Fried Chicken with Mango. Each one has a complete nutritional analysis, and there's a photo guide, fat-cutting secrets, simple new techniques and practical tips for everyday cooking, and information on substitutes for Chinese ingredients.
Customer Reviews:
Worth the effort.......2001-07-31
This book has two faults, firstly it is not long enough, I would love to see an illustration of each dish (but then it would have to be rather large and expensive. The second fault, it doesn't acknowledge people on a VERY low sodium diet, but this fault is minor (they still work if you omit the salt and use salt reduced soy sauce) as these recipes are the first that I have encountered that are authentic Chinese (Asian), in that, there is attention to detail in the building of flavour, rather than a few dominant flavours thrown into a "Western" style dish. I highly recommend the stock recipes, they, especially the chicken stock, are worth the effort. do not be afraid to substitute vegetables according to availability. I expect these dishes to be become mainstays for my AngloAsian family who have a genetic disposition to high blood pressure. Thankyou Stephen Wong.

Eat Smart for a Healthy Heart Cookbook.......2002-03-20
I have had this book for many years, but did not actually ever use it until this year, and it is fabulous! The recipes are easy, the ingredients are mutiple use (so you don't buy an ingredient and only use once) and everything tastes fabulous. My husband is very picky about food and he just raves about the items that I have cooked from this book. It really helps to have the combos for meal planning and grocery shopping as well. And the desserts, well, they are outstanding!!
Customer Reviews:
Ok book for beginners, raises lots of unanswered questions.......2004-09-09
This book is ideal for beginners. If only she had put the word beginner in the title I would have known and chosen another book. The book is very basic, and more than half of it consists of experiences of her friends. She goes into too many details about them, and the quotes sound made-up.
I'm a beginner to heart rate training but not a beginner to exercise. I ended up with lots of questions that her book doesn't answer. She says many things that I'm questioning. Maybe they're true for beginners who are out of shape but for me? According to her book, I'm running anaerobically (86% of HR max) yet I'm not even out of breath. Later she says that the threshold is different for everyone. so these percentages she gives (60%, 70%, 80%, etc.) are not accurate.
Overall I got some good ideas from this book, like the importance of cross-training and keeping a log of what I do. But at the same time I think at least half of it wasn't helpful. If you haven't exercises in a while and are out of shape, and are willing to buy a heart rate monitor (I suggest Polar) then this book is for you. If you already exercise I would search for a more advanced book or website.
Informative and Inspirational!.......2003-10-01
I have exercised regularly for years, and am well-acquainted with the benefits of aerobic conditioning. Although I have been aware of the importance of proper heart rate, I've always just guessed at it. On my last visit to my physician, he suggested that I exercise using a heart rate monitor. Sally Edwards' book was the one I chose to inform me on heart rate training.
This book presents the basics of heart zone training, which are exactly what I need as a beginner. A more experienced heart rate trainer might find the volume too simplistic, but for a novice it is ideal. Edwards' work is easy-to-read, and the training stories of friends and acquaintances personalize the presentation.
I'd recommend this book to anyone who is considering a heart rate training program. It's basic, it's believable, and it's built upon solid medical and athletic experience. Once you've read this title, you'll want to buy a heart rate monitor immediately. Take your time, learn about features and prices, and then purchase accordingly. The appendix at the back of the book gives some good advice on how to select a monitor that is right for you.
Better for beginners.......2003-05-04
Sally Edwards book is ideally suited for the novice non-runner. I found the information in this book to be very basic and with the primary emphasis to be targeted at individuals beginning a fitness program. The book is writen in a very friendly manner and definately not "textbookish". I recommend this book for those people interested in beginning a fitness program.
Did it need a book?.......2003-04-02
I found this book very informative, especially since I hadn't approached fitness from heart rate point of view before. However, I think this could have been presented in a much more succinct manner. The website ... seems to say the same thing much more precisely (and cheaply).
I think Sally gave too much attention to her friends' fitness experiences, experiences which were very far removed from this reader's situation.
Be smart........2003-03-02
Oh, Sally, Sally.....Sally! An old ghost from the past. Give up trying to write.

This is a cool book........2002-11-24
Do you like fast fascinating reads?, then you will like By Heart. I read it so fast and normally i'm a slow reader. A great documentary well written!
Grand Central Station Lady.......2001-12-20
I suppose this is mainly of interest to those who have read "By Grand Central Station I Sat Down and Wept" which is autobiographical but incoherent. This biography of Elizabeth Smart explains what really happened.
There is lot more to it than that. The insights into Canadian-British-American relationships are illuminating. The British literary scene comes across as the least inhibited and most tolerant of the three. The book has those snide cutting anti-Canadian jibes that Canadian writers do so well. The account of Soho in the fifties is fascinating and the account of Edmonton in the seventies is devastating.
Elizabeth Smart and George Barker and his wives went on to have close and warm relationships into their old age. In a way it's a happy ending to "By Grand Central Station" although there were further tragedies. The paracetemol that killed her daughter Rose (it produces hepatic necrosis when combined with alcohol) is known as acetominophen (Tylenol) in America.
Robert Fraser has written a biography of George Barker.
