In this age of managed care, it's likely that you have more questions when you leave the doctor's office than when you walk in the door. Who better to turn to for a remedy for that than the folks from Johns Hopkins, the hospital ranked at the top of U.S. News & World Report's list for eight years running. A joint effort of the university's schools of Medicine, Hygiene & Public Health, and Nursing, the Family Health Book includes more than 1,600 pages of medical guidance, from basic first aid and emergency care to the intricate (but clearly explained) workings of the body's systems and organs, to--possibly most importantly--ways to prevent illness in the first place. While many of the 500 illustrations are not for the squeamish, this reference is incredibly useful, especially for the elderly or couples who are expecting or have small children. For each disorder and illness, the editors have included information on typical and rare symptoms, tests a doctor may request for diagnosis, what you can do for home treatment, when to call the doctor, and prognoses. The "Preparing for Surgery" section should calm the worries of anyone about to go under anesthesia. The only gripe? A pronunciation guide would have been nice (leishmaniasis and paronychia don't exactly roll off the tongue), especially given that one of the best chapters is called "Becoming a Partner in Your Health Care" and focuses on doctor-patient communication.

Severe Burns: A Family Guide to Medical and Emotional Recovery (A Johns Hopkins Press Health Book)

ASIN: 0801846536 |
Book Description
The care of severe burn victims over 100,000 people are hospitalized each year has improved dramatically over the past fifty years. But a serious burn remains a painful, frightening, and traumatic experience. The psychological stress of injury may be increased by the formidable array of medical equipment used in early stages of care and by the number of doctors, nurses, and specialists that burn patients and their families encounter. Once out of intensive care, the burn survivor often faces a long and difficult recovery.
This book is meant to relieve some of the confusion and anxiety that comes with any serious burn injury. Written by the staff of the Baltimore Regional Burn Center, it includes comprehensive medical information from leading experts and first-person accounts of the experiences of burn survivors. The book describes the different types of burns, the various stages of treatment and recovery, the roles of all the people on the "burn team," the physical and emotional challenges of rehabilitation, and the resources available to patients and families. It also explains how to prevent injuries in the future and how to administer first aid to someone who has been burned.
Organized to be useful to family members and friends immediately after the injury, and to burn survivors themselves during recovery and rehabilitation, the book is comprehensive in its coverage of topics of concern to everyone affected by a burn injury:
Types of burns and inhalation injuriesSurvival, complications, and the futureThe "Burn Team" and what they do Tubes, monitors, and machines Types of dressingsPain managementPhysical rehabilitation Emotional and social recoverySpecial care for childrenReturning to school or workSupport groups, counseling, campsPlastic surgery, scarring, and corrective cosmeticsPrevention and safetyOrganizations and resources
"Being a burn survivor means so much more than simply being alive. Being a burn survivor also means being a take-charge-of-your-life person whose strength of spirit is inspirational to others. Burn survivors have to learn to accept that life as they knew it before the injury is lost. With this acceptance comes profound grief, of course, but many burn survivors grow to a level of personal awareness and acceptance of self that most people never experience." from the Preface
"For all those whose lives have been touched by burn injuries, this book explains medical procedures and the recovery process in a clear and comprehensive way. It will help burn survivors understand their injuries, their treatment, and their important role in returning to productive life. John A. Boswick, Jr., M.D., F.A.C.S., St. Joseph's Hospital, Denver

Book Description
More and more women are having babies after the age of thirty-five and experiencing the joy of motherhood. But mothers-to-be in this age group sometimes face unique medical, emotional, and social challenges. Conception may be difficult and the risk of miscarriage during early pregnancy is higher, as is the potential for complications such as hypertension and diabetes. And having a child later in life can also be surprisingly disruptive to well-established domestic routines and carefully cultivated careers.
Michele Moore and Caroline de Costa -- two physicians who have been down this road themselves -- offer reliable medical expertise and personal reassurance to women tackling these challenges. Pregnancy and Parenting after Thirty-Five covers a broad range of issues for mothers in mid life, from the possibility of Cesarean section to the awkwardness of being the oldest mom at PTA meetings to the joy of holding your infant in your arms.
Incorporating the stories of real women who have gone through mid-life pregnancy, Moore and de Costa have created a valuable resource that will help other women do so realistically and with confidence. One of the few books devoted to prospective mothers over thirty-five, this one also includes information on surrogacy, adoption, and the first few months of being a new mother.

Book Description
Your Child with Arthritis is designed to help parents and other family members with the challenging task of raising a child with a rheumatic disease. The authors--two pediatric rheumatologists, a physical therapist, and the parent of a child with juvenile arthritis--offer a wealth of information on rheumatic illnesses and explore a range of solutions for medical, emotional, and social and school-related problems. They also emphasize the important message that children should be encouraged to enjoy as many activities as possible, find and pursue their own interests, and develop independence and self-confidence.
The book offers detailed descriptions of the common rheumatic diseases that affect children--juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, dermatomyositis, and scleroderma--and provides extensive discussions of symptoms, diagnoses, and medical and other treatments. It covers topics of interest to parents, family members, health care professionals, teachers, and school administrators--in short, everyone concerned with the welfare of children with rheumatic illnesses: The major types of childhood arthritis Diagnostic laboratory tests and procedures Medications, physical and occupational therapy, eye care, nutrition, and pain management Selecting your child's doctor and developing a positive doctor-patient relationship What to expect and what questions to ask when visiting your child's doctor How to monitor your child's progress and maintain your own medical records (using the sample forms included) Working with teachers and school administrators to reduce the impact of rheumatic illness in school Health care insurance and financial concerns Coping with the impact of illness on the family Suggested additional reading as well as information about resources and organizations
"Just as there is no single treatment that is effective for every child with rheumatic disease, there is no single 'best way' for families to deal with their child's illness. Your Child with Arthritis: A Family Guide for Caregiving provides information and tools that we hope you will find useful in fashioning your own family's response. We hope that it will make your job as a parent of a child with chronic rheumatic illness a little easier, so that you can concentrate on the joyous adventure of parenting."--from the Introduction

Cesarean Section: Understanding and Celebrating Your Baby's Birth (A Johns Hopkins Press Health Book)
Michele C. Moore , and Caroline M. de Costa Manufacturer: The Johns Hopkins University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
Accessories: ASIN: 0801873371 |
Book Description
One in four babies born in the United States and Europe comes into the world via Cesarean section. Yet this procedure has been described by critics as an unnecessary and potentially dangerous medical intervention. Consequently, expectant mothers often fear this option, and women who have had C-sections can feel a sense of failure.
In Cesarean Section: Understanding and Celebrating Your Baby's Birth, Drs. Michele Moore and Caroline de Costa emphasize the joy of delivering a healthy baby, however that is best achieved. They explain why Cesarean births are sometimes preferable to vaginal delivery for both mother and baby, and they help women understand the issues behind the decision to perform the procedure. From anesthesia, surgery, and recovery through at-home care of mother and child, the authors offer reassurance and practical information for all mothers and mothers-to-be. They also discuss the latest findings on postpartum depression and planning for future births, including the possibility of vaginal birth after a Cesarean section.
For every woman who has a planned -- or unplanned -- Cesarean section, this book provides the information they need to alleviate their fears and come to value this delivery option.
"Because up to a quarter of all births are Cesarean births, prenatal preparation should include information about Cesarean sections for every woman. And that is why we have written this guide.... We believe strongly that it is time to speak out and say that Cesarean section is a normal birth method and that women who have a Cesarean section should not be made to feel that they have failed.... We hope you find the information in this book useful and helpful in thinking about C-section, whether you have already had a Cesarean and want to understand the experience better, you wish to plan for another C-section birth, or you are expecting a baby and want to be informed about all the possibilities ahead, including this other normal way of bringing a baby into the world." -- from the Introduction

Bipolar Disorder: A Guide for Patients and Families (A Johns Hopkins Press Health Book)
Francis Mark Mondimore Manufacturer: The Johns Hopkins University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0801878578 |
Book Description
"Bipolar disorder is a mood disorder that affects about two percent of the population. Such famous politicians, writers, artists, and musicians as Winston Churchill, George Frederick Handel, Lord Byron, Virginia Woolf, Edgar Allan Poe, Napoleon Bonaparte, and Vincent van Gogh had bipolar disorder, but most persons affected by bipolar disorder are just ordinary people who want nothing more than to get back to their everyday lives after they or their family members have been diagnosed with the illness. This book is written for them." -- from the Preface
In this book for persons with bipolar disorder and their families, Dr. Frank Mondimore offers a comprehensive, practical, compassionate guide to the symptoms, diagnosis, treatment and causes of this potentially devastating psychiatric illness, formerly known as "manic-depression." He offers practical advice for getting the most out of the various treatments that are now available -- from medication, psychotherapy, and electroconvulsive treatment to new approaches such as St. John's wort and transcranial magnetic stimulation. For each, he discusses advantages, disadvantages, side effects, and other information to help patients make informed decisions about treatment options. He also describes what it is like to live with bipolar disorder and discusses how lifestyle changes can improve quality of life. Throughout, he focuses on the importance of building a support system, of planning for emergencies, and of giving one's self permission to seek help.
Bipolar disorder is a particularly difficult illness to diagnose and treat, Dr. Mondimore acknowledges, and it can be incredibly destructive to relationships and careers, can wreak havoc on family life and, when not properly treated, is a potentially fatal disease. In his wide-ranging discussion of this unpredictable disorder, Dr. Mondimore describes problems that are unique to women, whose disease may be affected by the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, and childbirth,. He includes new information on the forms the illness takes in children and adolescents, in whom it can sometimes be mistaken for more common problems such as "hyperactivity" or Attention Deficit Disorder. He explains what we know about the genetics of the disease, how symptoms fluctuate with the seasons in seasonal affective disorder, and how illness can be made more difficult to treat because of alcoholism or drug abuse. He discusses coping with the stigmatization of psychiatric diagnosis, gives advice on picking a psychiatrist and on dealing with medical insurance issues, and even explores the fascinating relationship between bipolar disorder and artistic creativity. Finally, Dr. Mondimore tells family members what they can do to help the person with bipolar disorder -- and themselves -- and he offers hope for the future as researchers learn more about the disease and how to control it.
