Book Description
Known as "the Ralph Nader of psychiatry," Dr. Peter Breggin has been the medical expert in countless court cases involving the use or misuse of psychoactive medications. This unusual position has given him unprecedented access to private pharmaceutical research and correspondence files, information from which informs this straight-talking guide to the most prescribed and controversial category of American drugs: antidepressants. From how these drugs work in the brain to how they treat (or don't treat) depression and obsessive-compulsive, panic, and other disorders; from the documented side and withdrawal effects to what every parent needs to know about antidepressants and teenagers, The Anti-Depressant Fact Book is up-to-the minute and easy-to-access. Hard-hitting and enlightening, every current, former, and prospective antidepressant-user will want to read this book.
Customer Reviews:
Breggin is not what you think.......2007-03-05
I do own a number of Breggin's books and I like his overall viewpoint. But, more recently have come to realize that in many respects he is an unscientific zealot. For instance, in 2005, a court disqualified the testimony of Breggin because it did not meet the scientific rigor established by the Frye Standard. The judge stated:
"...Breggin spends 14 pages critiquing the treatment provided not because it ran counter to the acceptable standards of care, but because it ran counter to Breggin's personal ideas and ideologies of what the standards ought to be."
In yet two other cases:
A Maryland judge in a medical malpractice case in 1995 said, "I believe that his bias in this case is blinding. . . he was mistaken in a lot of the factual basis for which he expressed his opinion."
In that same year a Virginia judge excluded Breggin's testimony stating, "This court finds that the evidence of Peter Breggin, as a purported expert, fails nearly all particulars under the standard set forth in Daubert and its progeny. . . Simply put, the Court believes that Dr. Breggin's opinions do not rise to the level of an opinion based on 'good science'."
____________________________
Again, Breggin makes some very good points, but he seems to be on a crusade. I think a more balanced book is "Blaming the Brain" by Vaillant. He is a true scientist and researhcer (in fact a Ph.D.) and he is much more fair. In fact, he explicitly states that he is not totally against psychiatric medications.
The other VERY important point here is not to confuse SCIENCE and MEDICINE. The former being a set of prinicipals and methodologies seeking the "truth." MEDICINE on the other hand is a "craft" and an art, which sometimes incorporates science and other times is less scientific. However, this criticism against psychiatry is unfair in that the same critiques can be lodged at any medical doctor within ANY specialty, not just psychiatry. Medical doctors in all specialties prescribe medicinces all of the time for "off label" uses because the drugs work for that symptom or disorder, depsite the fact that the doctor has not the slighest clue why it seems to work. The important point here is that psychiatry in itself is a field of medicince and I do not believe proponents ever claimed it to be a branch of science.
In any event,I do agree with some of what Breggin says, but I think a better and more balanced read is "Blaming the Brain", as I noted above.
Facts everybody must know.......2006-06-25
Dr. Peter R. Breggin's work is excellent. Drugs are KILLING many people before their "natural" time to die has come. Breggin can help persons to stop killing themselves with those horrible medications. Read the book and get better without drugs.
Total Garbage.......2006-02-10
If there is anyway to make a quick dollar today, its for some moronic MD to write another book about the use of anti-depressents. I really wish that people would stopped reading this garbage, and just do what they feels is right, and stop believing everything someone says just because they have the letter MD in front of their name. The reason I take this personally is that I have been diagnosed with a mental illness, and these drugs have saved my life. I have tried everything, from exercise, to herbals, to vitimins, to theropy, and even though they help, w/o the drugs, I am unable to function. Yes, it is true, these are some strong drugs, and doctors do Overpriscribe them, yet at the same time, they can do wonders for people who dont react well to "Alternitive Theropy" so the person can live a normal life. Every drug has side effects, and little is known about long lasting effects. Does this mean that people with other diseases shouldn't take Meds, should they sufefer and Die because of side effects from Meds, or do you take a chance and possibly live longer. DOnt believe the hype with these [...]. The human brain is still the one body part that doctors are still puzzled with, and little is known of why stuff happens to it. Take your meds, dont suffer, live longer, and tell Peter R. Breggin to go [..](oh yes that is anger created by the use of Effexor..)
Some Balance Please!.......2006-02-01
I did not read this book,(so cannot truly rate it) but read the description and all of the reviews. I am currently taking an antidepressant and it's working well for me (the generic of Celexa.) I have suffered from low-grade depression for most of my life, with a few major crashes over the years. I do believe it's from a chemical imbalance, contrary to what Dr. Breggin may purport. And I think it's always interesting when so many who make comments seem to have not experienced depression or ever used antidepressants. If, however, I had a child who was depressed, I would NOT want them to use psychotropics unless they absolutely could not function without them
The real problem is not antidepressants or other psychotropics, but the misapplication and over-prescription of them. Those with garden-variety depression need to do their research before taking any antidepressant, even when your well-meaning primary care doctor may be more than willing to give you a prescription (they don't really have the time to talk to you.) You may simply need some counseling or behavioral therapy. On the other hand, if you have a long-term depressive history (as I do) it may be a good idea to look into the possibility of antidepressants. Again, do your homework. We are our best health advocates. And you will need to consult with a psychiatrist who has more in-depth knowledge of psychotropic drugs than your primary care physician usually does (and "your doctor won't tell you" because he really doesn't know what to tell you.) Antidepressants and other related drugs require "tweaking," trial and error and patience. If you have what is considered major depression and cannot seem to shake it, short-term or long-term drug treatment may be what is needed. Also no "pill" for mental illness is good without coinciding counseling (and your follow-up with your MD, including the psychiatrist, is not counseling.) That's my real beef with MD's prescribing psychotropics. Most MDs have no mental health training and mental health providers are not trained or certified to prescribe drugs.
Please! Everyone, including Dr. Breggin, needs to remember how many people have been helped by the prudent use of antidepressants. Antidepressants and related drugs need be viewed just like other drugs: they are not for everyone, there is no "magic" pill, and virtually every drug has some side-effects. Let's get back to some balance on this issue and quit polarizing.
Nan, Tampa FL
Good book........2005-10-05
Good review of the negative aspects of SSRIs (and there are many). Would have given it five stars, but he leaves out the very important fact that SSRIs can sometimes cause permanent sexual dysfunction after the drugs are stopped. This has long been overlooked by the medical community and should be included here. Do a goolge search for details.

Customer Reviews:
Not such a great book.......2007-05-13
Don't bother with this book as there is nothing much to be found new here.
Anyone who likes to read this type of book will be disappointed.
Not The Latest or The Best.......2006-09-27
At least Ms. Heimlich tries to get to the real truth about alternative medicine, unlike Trodeau who only wants to make money by exploiting fear. Further study into the mind, body, spirit connection would make this a better read. Forget The Cures, Find The Cause would be a geat companion to this.
Interesting but all over the place.......2006-08-05
Some of the information was new and interesting, but I found the book to be very non-specific. In other words, it would be very hard to create your own health plan based on information from this book.
Controversial Book!.......2006-05-31
This book really is controversial. I would suggest more research and self education because some of the information provided is just not true! It gives a neat perspective on things but not a book to use for diagnosis! I would suggest supplemental reading if you are serious about your health. I found a great report on Inner Health available at librarydepot.com It includes a nutrition benefits chart that links nutritional support needed to many diseases/disorders.
A MUST READ FOR EVERYONE!.......2005-07-28
Informative and revealing. Don't order without it in your cart.

Book Description
Dr. Evan S. Levine considers it his ethical responsibility to say what other doctors won't-that the health care industry has put profits ahead of healing patients. A practicing internist and cardiologist, he shows how to get the best medical care-and avoid the scams used to bilk patients and boost profits. Among the topics and vital tips he covers:
Customer Reviews:
seems pretty good.......2007-04-24
entertaining, but with bias for teaching hospitals. Hmm, author is associated, wait... can't be, w/ teaching hospital. Really?
Over generalized: just because a radiation oncologist does not have the latest "bling" stethoscope, does not mean I would not go to him; I would be surprised if he even had a stethoscope at all... Neurologist who specialize in nerve conductive studies do NOT need blood pressure machines and are irrelevant to their practice.
Author does make things more sensational then need to be mostly in an effort to boost his sales and make more money on his book. Who can blame him? If he did not do that, publisher sure would. Write a book = get a check. Write a sensational book = go on TV, get bigger check, become a "personality."
But I would like a disclaimer on that as well stating that he is taking few select cases out of a career and exploring then on paper. I would argue the vast majority of encounters are not nearly as sensational.
For the cost of my co-pay I saved thousands!.......2005-10-12
Now I know why my doctor placed me on a medication that costs about $1,500 dollars a year when I could have taken a better one that costs about $20 dollars a year. After reading Dr. Levine's book I went to another doctor and asked if it would be reasonable to switch. My blood pressure is still controlled and I am savings thousands of dollars. Shame on the medical industry for doing this to us!
a must read before entering your doctor's office.......2005-08-30
Before entering a doctor's office, a hospital, or taking any prescribed drug, you must read this book. Dr. Levine tells all about the horrors of the healthcare industry and how to avoid becoming a victim.
Extraordinarily Honest.......2004-11-01
When Dr Levine describes his book as "honest," it is redundant. His honesty, knowledge and his concern for the well-being of patients virtuallly leaps from the page.
He packs and enomous amount of little known information and a wealth of practical, life-saving suggestions about surviving a hospital stay, and even about relating to an ordinary visit to a doctor, into a few hundred pages.
It's a "must read" for anyone feeling a little under the weather, and for every one else before they feel less than well, as well.
There ought to be a prize, or a medal, for the sort of courage that Dr. Levine's revelations exemplify. And a heartfelt thanks for his clarity in expressing it.

Author Peter Breggin doesn't try to hide his opinion: the introduction to The Ritalin Fact Book clearly states, "This book is written from a viewpoint that is critical of stimulant drugs and their prescription for "attention deficit hyperactive disorder." As a medical expert in legal cases against pharmaceutical companies, Breggin has access to information many doctors have never seen, and what he presents is frightening.
After a vivid and harrowing tale of a young man placed on numerous medications that only compounded his problems, Breggin dives into several fairly technical chapters concerning the effects of stimulating drugs on children and how they can actually cause psychiatric disorders. He repeatedly insists that ADHD, which he refers to in quotation marks as "ADHD," can be corrected by improved parenting and teaching styles, and assures readers that a biochemical basis for the disorder is "simply nonsense." For many children this may be true, but the book will be frustrating reading for parents who have been exploring therapy and self-control training for years without positive effects.
While many of Breggin's detailed explanations of chemistry and character are important for navigating the maze of pediatric mental health, his explosively negative style could do as much harm as good. --Jill Lightner

Customer Reviews:
Truth in this book by valid repudable psychiatrist.......2007-04-30
I have known people with children put on drugs like Ritalin since grade school. In high school they were worse and got more diagnosis to last a life time. The parents say they have been compliant on medication and it keeps getting worse and worse and they only get more meds. and diagnosis and the parents can hardly go out of the home without concern for what their children may do.
This book helps many. Those who like the drugs are just speculating and don't listen to the stories of how hyperactive children are helped and recover without meds.
Be a good parent.......2006-11-30
After reading this book you will not be ready to inspire world peace, end world hunger, or even balance your own check book. However, you will be a better parent for taking the time to educate yourself about a critical topic. The easy answer is to cave into an educator's diagnosis that your child is ADHD and get a prescription to dope your child. The educators are motivated to neutralize your child if they pose any teaching challenge. And what doctor won't write prescriptions?
Everything that Dr. Breggin writes will not work for your child. However, traditional doping may not be right for your child either. Be a good parent, do your own research and follow your instincts. In conducting my own research, I found a father who lost his daughter to Ritalin - suicide. I Googled him and found his phone number. During our discussion, his most memorable statement was that he should have followed his instincts and taken her (daughter) off the Ritalin.
None of the expert opinions should replace your parental instincts! Read contradictory pieces to formulate your own position. Without the courage of Dr. Breggin and others like him, we would only get to read the pharmaceutical industries position.
Finally, regarding the input from "A Reader", who is the quack? The commentator refers us to "Quackwatch" to uncover some discrepancies regarding Dr. Breggin. However, what you find is that Dr. Breggin is guilty of his biased opinion. Just as the author of Quackwatch has his own bias. Additional Googling uncovered that the author of Quackwatch (Dr. Barrett) has also had his credibility challenged. As posted on the Canadian Lyme Disease Foundation web site, "under a heated cross-examination ... Barrett conceded that he was not a Medical Board Certified psychiatrist because he had failed the certification exam." Maybe "A Reader" should have read a little more!
Read Breggin's books along with the books of other authors. More importantly speak with other parents and learn from their challenges. Also, is your child just like you? Did you need doping? If not, why does your kid? Use a little logic and common sense.
be prepared.......2006-02-21
Dr. Breggin simply dismisses the notion that ADHD, ADD and perhaps autism represent biological states. Instead, he asserts the labels ADD and ADHD are no more than convenient excuses for lazy teachers and parents to commit temporary lobotomies upon their children and/or students. Breggin suggests the ADHD issue can be resolved by simply changing the parent and teacher's behavior . This thesis occupies about 20% of the book.
The other 80% of the book reviews the horrific damage psycho-active drugs potentially cause children. Breggin recounts several cases where Ritalin is given to a normal healthy child who happens to act out at school one day. The drug causes more problems. Before you can say 1, 2, 3; the child is on 5 or 6 psychoactive drugs, displays involuntary ticks, and gets diagnosed with a bipolar disorder or acute early stage schizophrenia. Dr. Breggin saves the day by pulling the child off drugs. and allowing the normal child to reemerge.
Dr. Breggin's logic is hardly compelling, but every parent thinking about giving their child psychoactive medications should read this book very carefully. Breggin may not be much of a neuroscientist, but his warnings should not be ignored. If nothing else, he does a good job of making the warning labels an interesting read. Be prepared.
Breggin is onto Something Here.......2006-02-15
I'll speak up in defense of Breggin -- he's trying to tell readers to be aware of Ritalin, unlike the so-called "ADHD" experts who have financial ties to the industry. He has your child's interest at heart. Another must-read is ADHD FRAUD by Baughman and Cohen.
This is a MUST read!.......2005-07-10
We were in the process of getting our child diagnosed with ADHD, and, after reading all the "standard" ADHD books, I decided to read a book from the "other side" - I like to keep an open mind.
This is the first book that I have read by Dr. Peter Breggin, and I was impressed. He has a name for himself as an extremist, which he is. He also has something as a name for being cruel to children, which I don't think he is, I actually saw a compassion and commitment for children and their problems.
Please let me explain.
He admits in this book that his perspective is a skewered one - that since he treats children who were hurt by Ritalin and other psychiatric drugs, and he sees the ones who have the worst side effects, some of them irreversible, he tends to have a negative view of Ritalin.
But what I really wanted to see was some alternative - great, Ritalin is no good, but what else is there? You can't just take away a solution without at least giving us another solution! And that is where I was, indeed, very pleasantly surprised. He has a chapter on what to do to help your child without Ritalin, and it is inspired, it is genius. It is hard to explain his method in this review, I couldn't explain it as well as he does, anyway. I recommend this book just for that chapter alone. And although his method makes sense, the proof is in the pudding - the proof is in the stories of children that he has helped, that he has taught to have self-control, and to be weaned off the medicine.
Now, I would like to put in my own opinion here, if I may. Dr. Breggin is an extremist, and no extremist is ever 100% right. His practice is comprised of children (and adults - although he brings no adult case studies) who reacted badly to the medication they received, and he helps the parents wean them off, etc. In that case, it may be argued that he is really seeing only one side of the coin. He is seeing all the patients who had side effects, some of them *extremely* severe, and not seeing all the patients who were helped, and did well, on medication. It may in fact be argued that the patients he is seeing should not have been on Ritalin in the first place.
I recommend this book, but with one caveat - take this as a warning, not as fact. Not all children who take Ritalin have such severe side effects. Many children who take Ritalin are helped, a lot, with almost no side effects. In fact, some people that I know call Ritalin a wonder drug. But, it IS a psychiatric drug. While it helps tremendously for those who need it, the way that it is being prescribed today - almost like Tylenol - does not say very much for the way we are treating our children. The side effects, when they are there, can be very severe, as Dr. Breggin says over and over again in his book. So my recommendation is first, to make sure that your child really does have ADHD before prescribing Ritalin (you would be surprised at how quickly some doctors will prescribe it with little, or no testing), and second, watch out for the side effects. Most doctors will not tell you what the side effects could be, and what to watch out for, which is why this book is so valuable in that sense. I am also surprised at how many people I have met who say they were prescribed Ritalin and it didn't help. Why in the world did they keep on taking a medication - a psychiatric medication - if didn't even help?
Parents should not be cowed by schools and doctors - if you are a parent, you know your child best. And do not be frightened into giving your child medicine that you don't feel is right for him/her. Also, people will tell you that you should start as soon as you can - the earlier the better, they will say. That is simply not true. Ritalin is not a cure for ADHD, it is simply a drug that will help symptoms. Ritalin does not change anyone's brain long term, only for the amount of time that they are on the drug. So there is no danger in waiting a while - a month - a year - to see if they will outgrow it without the drugs. On the other hand, if your child is totally out of control (I find it hard imagining a five year old so totally out of control that he/she must be put on drugs, but I guess it could happen, although very rarely) then, yes, you must put him on drugs immediately!
This is, I think, the part that this book is missing. True, Ritalin could have side effects. True, most children who are on Ritalin should not be on it, and can be helped with Dr. Breggin's wonderful common sense. But he totally overlooks a small, but essential, percentage of children (and adults) for whom Ritalin is absolutely a life-saver, in every sense of the word!

Book Description
An internist and cardiologist tells you what others may be afraid to-and what can save your life: where to look, what to ask, and what to avoid when you need quality health care for yourself and your family.
Dr. Evan Levine, a New York cardiologist, believes he has a responsibility. The practice of medicine in America today has deteriorated and everyone must look harder to find good health care. Dr. Levine wants to give people the facts that can really help them-the truth about the scams doctors, hospitals, and drug and insurance companies are running, all in an effort to put profits ahead of healing patients; and the vital tips we need to find the appropriate general physician, specialist, and hospital in our area.
How do you choose a good doctor? Check for his or her board certification, medical schools, and rankings; and never accept a doctor assigned automatically by a hospital. How do you find the right hospital-where things will be done professionally and correctly? Go to a university hospital, especially during an emergency; make sure an ER doctor calls your primary physician; and always question a test being administered. Levine's book is chock-full of essential information on second opinions, clinical studies, and the tricks of the trade that doctors, hospitals, and drug and insurance companies use to maximize their profits-at the expense of your health-and your wallet.

Ask the nurses who the good doctors are? Nurses like the doctors that are nice to them. The best doctors aren't always nice.
Go to a Teaching hospital if you can? So a resident can do your procedure and round on you? I think not.
Drug companies are out to rip us all off? Dr. Levine doesn't like drug companies because drugs like statins and ace inhibitors decrease his business.
Asked to be transferred during your care? So a new doctor that hasn't been following you can start all over.
Tell the ER doctor to call your Primary care doctor? So he can get whoever is on call for the group and knows nothing about you. Right. Lots of help.
Really weird stuff to come from an MD.
Honesty and Courage Personified.......2004-11-30
This incredibly valuable book is characterized by almost reckless honesty in combination with a concern for the welfare of patients that I have encountered nowhere else to date.
If it is read casually, there is much of critical value; if studied carefully, there is even more.
Dr. Levine had earned the gratitude of everyone who reads the book as well as all others because, with his trail blazing book, he has put the medical establishment on notice that they can no longer depend on the code of silence that has for so long protected inadequate and impaired heath care professionals. And it's high time.
Everyone Should Read.......2004-10-21
I can't express how important I believe this book to be. I am a business consultant of more than 30 years. I have read extensively in many areas of business - and in Health, Wealth, Happiness, and Success. I'm not a doctor. I'm not sure there isn't some exaggeration here. But, both Dr. Levine and what he says "feels" right. And, even if it isn't, it is a wonderful checklist of things to watch our for and check against. I plan to purchase additional copies for members of my family. I plan to recommend this book to those who attend my seminars.
Shocking and revealing!.......2004-09-25
I was shocked to learn that drug companies and medical suppliers "court" and "pay" (my quotes) doctors to use their products.
The author explains the process behind the FDA approving a drug and that some doctors have a conflict of interest while taking part in the approval process.

Take control of your health and surgery decisions!.......1998-11-24
This book takes you where most authors (and Doctors) are afraid to tread. Dr. Whitaker is an M.D. himself and has the knowledge and insight to force us to think about our own health and how WE have control of our future. His knowledge of supplements and herbs is extensive and complete.
We have with this book the opportunity to make informed decisions and he gives us insight on making the right decisions. We must not take the word of the surgeon because he just "said so."
This is an excellent read, easy to understand, in layman's terms; but treats the reader with respect. This is a total wellness book, Dr. Whitaker tells us how to get healthy and stay healthy, and possibly how to reverse our heart health.
My chiropractor recommended this book and I read his copy, but now I am ordering my own copy.

Women Need a Strategy.......2007-03-07
The helpful point in this book is that it discusses the consequences of female castration. I would disagree with the Journal review above that says the book is emotional and unbalanced. What I suspect he is looking for is the unemotional and balanced discussions that is otherwise available and says we should end reproductive function, disturb normal pelvic integrity, alter hormonal and neuroendocrine functions, and enslave women to a liftime of drug therapy at the slightest sign of non life-threatening conditions. While the author does highlight the risk to sexual normalcy in the book, you will pick up the other risks when reading the stories of the women she interviews. This book was written in 1986 and eventhough we are in 2007, nothing has changed. I think this book attempts to explain that much is at risk when one agrees or is conned into the surgical procedure hysterectomy. A woman risks her life, her family, her relationship, her career, her education, and her dreams. Women individually or collectively need to come up with a strategy for dealing with our reproductive health from menstruation to post-menopause, the medical community have shown in their unemotional and balanced articles and studies - that women's best interest is not on their list of concerns.
This book saved my sanity.......2002-02-25
I had a Hysterectomy when I was 24 years old. Life for my entire family became a living nightmare. No one told me what to expect. I was suffering from post-hysterectomy syndrome for seven years and didn't know it. When my therapist handed me this book I was immediately intrigued. I too had considered myself "castrated". After reading the first five pages, my life was forever changed. It was as if everything suddenly made sense. I don't know if Mrs. Stokes is still with us, but I would like to tell her Thank You. You are an amazing genius. Thank You Thank You Thank You. Any woman who is having second thoughts, or Uterine/Ovarian problems, with the scare of Hysterectomy hanging over their head MUST read this book. You will be able to make an informed decision.
