Good Overview for someone suffering from phobia or anxiety.......2007-08-13
The only thing it lacked is specific examples. And some easy remedies. Other than that it is a great book to read!
Excellent WorkBook!.......2007-08-11
We use this workbook in our psychiatry clinic. Patients like it and it's easy to use. Just make sure you're willing to do the work, otherwise you're wasting your money.
Help for Anxiety.......2007-07-30
A VERY helpful resource for people with anxiety. Lots of insight, suggestions, and extremely user friendly to the lay person.
Must Read for Anyone With Anxiety.......2007-05-21
This workbook is full of insight into what makes you feel anxiety and great ways to take steps to overcoming the fears associated with anxiety. The first book (or workbook) that didn't make me feel like I was crazy and that there are really easy ways to deal with daily anxiety! Your family members will find this enlightening as well, since they generally mis-understand what you are going through.
The Anxiety&Phobia Workbook.......2007-05-14
Purchased this on a recommendation by a school psychologist and it does help the student put what they are feeling into words. The person can keep track of their progress and have something conrete to refer to.
Book Description
Much of anxiety therapy is designed as quick, focused intervention, treating a specific syndrome without looking at the possibility of long- term healing. However, true recovery requires something more: understanding the meaning of anxiety symptoms and going deeper to face their underlying sources in a holistic and life-changing way. Beyond Anxiety and Phobia provides an array of alternative strategies for entering this long-term healing mode; describes alternative therapies such as herbs, yoga, massage, acupuncture, and homeopathy; and addresses the impact of perfectionism and other personality issues.

Beyond Anxiety and Phobia: A Step-by-Step Guide to Lifetime Recovery.......2007-05-14
Goes along with the workbook by the same author. It is easy to read and understand.
Helps learn about yourself and others.......2007-01-12
I never look to books to give me the ultimate answer. If I learn something from it and can apply it in some way to my life, and if it's writen well enough to keep me interested, it's worth it. This book was very good that way, at least for someone who likes philosopical/psychological stuff.
I've been diagnosed with a general anxiety disorder, and had a bout of depression last year. A very good therapist recommended this to me. In fact, she said that I HAD TO buy it. I did, and learned a lot about various types and triggers for anxiety. The more I learn about it, the easier for me to deal with it. It became a familiar, known side of me, and when I can separate the rest of me from it and look at it, and study it, it becomes less and less relevant. Which is what we all want, right?
And, it helped me understand other types of psychological issues. I don't suffer from all of those, thankfully, but it is sure interesting to learn how those work. Anyway, it's a good read. Enjoy!
Not sure.......2007-01-10
This sems like it could be a great help for someone suffering with anxiety, however it can also be very overwhelming. It is definately not a quick fix. This is more like a study guide, kinda like taking a class. If you need immediate help, I suggest seeing a professional as apposed to buying this book. If you have plenty of time on your hands and your anxiety os already under control, then this book can be helpful.
Beyond Anxiety and Phobia: A Step-by-Step Guide to Lifetime Recovery .......2006-11-10
This book was very helpful. My psychologist recommended it to help with my counsleing treatment. The author breaks things down for you and makes you realize many things that you can do to live a better, healthier life. It has truly changed my life for the better! I would recommend this to anyone who has anxiety, phobias, even stress.
Desperate to find real help.......2005-09-15
My wife has been suffering for months with debilitating anxiety. In addition to medication and therapy, we have read about 6 (layman) books on the subject. I found this book to be the only secular book on the subject that offered practical, clear information that really helped. Save your money and order this book first. It is very comprehensive, well organized, and easy to understand.

Linden Method: The Anxiety Disorder, Panic Attacks and Phobias Elimination.......2007-02-14
I was very skeptical about this purchase because of the price, but I thought if it worked, it would be well worth it. It has really helped me alot with my anxiety attacks. It hasn't eliminated them completely, but it has helped me to deal with them and keep them manageable instead of a full blown attack. The relaxation CD's are very helpful but it is important that you take the time to listen. The only concern that I had is prior to purchasing, it indicated that I would have one year of online counseling support but in the product, I could find no numbers to call or how to access that service. I wouldn't have needed to call anyway, but it would have been nice to know "just is case". I haven't been dealing with this anxiety stuff for long...only about 2 1/5 months due to the scare of being diagnosed with SVT. This method really helped me to catch it in time before it got out of control. Expensive but for me it was worth it.
nice gift.......2006-05-26

Amazing!!.......2006-05-19
A few months ago, I thought my life was over. Living with anxiety and agoraphobia was ruining my life and I didn't know how I was going to recover. I kept coming across this method while I was desperate looking for a solution. I was skeptical because it sounded too good to be true. I decided to give it a shot and believe me, it was the best $177 I spent. It was totally worth it and I would highly recommend this to ANYONE suffering from anxiety, agoraphobia, social phobia, OCD, etc.
When I first started the method, I felt an instant relief..."Wow, someone who really understands". I didn't feel so alone anymore. After alittle over a month, I started going out more and feeling so much better about myself.
If you suffer from anxiety, you should definitely try this method. It's safe and easy to do :)
Suffer No More.......2006-04-18
Stress is inevitable and is a fundamental part of our lives. In moderation the 'adrenaline surges' of stress makes us achieve, but in excess, over a period of time, stress can result in high anxiety, panic attacks and a failure to function effectively.
Anxiety brings misery to 1 in 4 of us and the effects can last a lifetime if not countered. In the "Linden Method" a proven solution is found, to assist those who follow its well explained ethos, back to a meaningful life.
This is a comprehensive and yet easy course to follow and is highly recommended.
The one thing that changed and saved my life!.......2006-03-22
I have used this method. I went through a period of anxiety for about a year. I saw a real Psychologist, not one with a bogus `holistic' degree from a mail order school. He was highly recommended and is considered one of the best in the United States. It was effective to a point. The biggest thing was getting over that hump. I did not take drugs for this; I did not want to go that route. I stopped going to the doctor, thinking I was cured. But I wasn't.
Then I heard about the Linden Method. I was skeptical at first. When you have anxiety you read a lot of `possible' solutions. There is a lot of crap out there. But I told myself I had nothing to lose. I remember sitting in the park reading that book and crying. Finally, someone who understands! And then I heard his CDs and I felt more assured. Within a month all the terror, being scared all the time and not understanding what was happening to me stopped. That yearlong nightmare was over.
I know some people are saying that I only had anxiety for a year and I can't understand what they are going through-CRAP! The length of the time you have had anxiety is no badge of honor, it just means you have not treated it effectively. I had EVERY symptom you can imagine. I went from happy go lucky to loony in one instant. I had 2 MRI/MRAs of my head, multiple CT Scans of my head and chest, X-rays of my lungs, heart, & back. Lyme disease, Glucose, STDs/, AIDS/HIV, liver and a million other blood tests. I went to 2 GPs, 3 Chiropractors, Psychologist, Neurologist, Pulmonary MD, holistic doctors and a couple of others I have forgotten. I don't even want to mention how many times I went to the emergency room, thinking I was having a stroke, heart attack, seizures, etc. The only thing I had in all those test was high blood pressure-caused by the anxiety! I had over $100,000 of test according to my insurance company. I stared at the walls all the time. Lost 40lbs just from not eating. I thought I had diabetes, Asthma, MS, Lupus, Parkinson's, AIDS, ALS, every cancer you can imagine and some diseases maybe 5 people in the whole world have gotten. I had and today continue to have NONE of those things.
I am now enrolling at the University of Pennsylvania in the Doctoral Psychology program. I will also be taking training at the Beck Institute, the birthplace of cognitive behavior therapy (CBT). CBT is considered the real only cure or at least the quickest for anxiety and depression. Mr. Linden follows many of the CBT methods. I wanted to help people. I could of gone after one of those fake degrees from some diploma mill and set up shop as a therapist, but I wanted to have the best training. Also I did not want people being skeptical of me as they are of Mr. Linden.
Mr. Linden might not be a doctor, but he is still helpful. He is not diagnosing anyone. The people buying this I am sure have gone to doctors already. They know they have anxiety. Mr. Linden's method I find is very effective for most people.
Mr. Linden does not say to never see a doctor. He says stop seeing doctors after they told you all that is wrong with you is anxiety. Any legimate pyschologist would tell you the same thing. Many people with anxiety develop some form of hypochondria, because most people don't understand how anxiety causes phyiscal sympotms. And medical and mental health doctors really don't explain it. Seeing a doctor over and over will just prolong and worsen the anxiety. If you have not seen a doctor, see one. If you have no underling medical issues (which most with anxiety don't) than why do you need to see a doctor everytime you have a symptom?
Mr. Linden states to stop reaseacrhing you condition. THAT IS GOOD ADVICE. Most people with anxiety have read a million things already. All these chat forums about anxiety are populated by scared people with anxiety. When you talk to them you get more scared because they are just pulling you down with their horror stories. Then you research your physchical symptoms at all these medical sites, and you think you have MS, AIDS, ALS or the Bubonic Plague! THE WORST THING YOU CAN DO IS RESEARCH ANXIETY OVER AND OVER AGAIN.
I am skeptical at people who critizes something like Linden's method when they are a competiter of his.
For a cheaper version of this program, go to his website and you can download the book, DVD and CDs.
Good luck to everyone! And I hope and pray you will be well soon. Trust yourself and you will. I did it. I am in the best physical and mental shape of my life. I enjoy life every day. It took me awhile to say it, but anxiety is the best thing that ever happened to me. I discovered more about myself and life than I could of ever have before. I know you will say it one day too.

Best Book on Panic I Own.......2007-08-28
I have been plagued with panic attacks for 5 years. Despite medication and therapy, the anxiety of having another panic attack remains with me 24/7.
This book was recommended to me by my therapist, and it is truly excellent. Do not plan to breeze through it in a few evenings, though. It has questions to answer, things to ponder, and requires more involvement than "quick fix" books that you've probably already tried. You must truly commit to going through the book and doing the exercises - and making that commitment can be difficult.
Best Book Ever for Anxiety and Panic Disorders.......2005-11-10
It is working very well for me so far. I just recently got the book, (probably a week ago) and it has helped me significantly. I am now not experiencing any more panic attacks and I feel very good.
A good empirically-based treatment workbook.......2002-02-24
This is a sound approach to treating panic and anxiety. The exercises are based on the clinical literature and the author's experience as a therapist. The book is in workbook format with large pages and very long lines of text across the page, which makes reading it difficult for some clients. In addition, the client has to be fairly well educated to benefit from the text. It would not be very useful to those who are not very good readers or those who have little formal education (e.g., high school dropouts with little interest in reading). Nonetheless, the ideas are useful for therapists who can incorporate them into their work without using the text per se.
TRULY AN ACTIVE GUIDE IN OVERCOMING PANIC.......2001-09-11
I have read many books and seen many therapist over the last 8 years, and this book proves to place the reader in an active role in overcoming their anxiety. Not that other books were not helpful, but this one made the other books about anxiety all come together to reinforce what I was doing. The best advice is to have someone help you to be accountable and do what the book says because only practice will help you change.
Real, workable solutions........2001-08-05
I've read many, many books on treating panic disorder, but this is the ONLY book that helped me overcome my panic disorder. I only wish I had read it years ago. Panic pretty much ... my life down a black hole -- I was so agoraphobic that for two years I rarely left my bedroom, even to go down the hall to the kitchen. A cognitive-behavioral therapist gave me a copy of this book and took me step by step thru it. It took 8 months of hard, scary work but today I can go anywhere, with or without anyone, and do anything, for as long as I want, whenever I want --not a medication in sight and not a twinge of inapropriate panic. Two years ago I couldn't even contemplate walking to the end of my driveway. I just can't recommend this book highly enough. It was the light at the end of my tunnel.

Wonderful Book.......2005-07-15
I have had problems with anxiety for a few years, and this is definately the most helpful book I have read. It is easy to read and it gets to the point, which I appreciate.
This program honestly works!.......2005-05-19
I found this book to be very helpful. The first few chapters help you to learn the cause and effect of your anxiety/phobia/panic and coping skills to deal with these issues. The further you read the more you learn how to overcome your issues and REGAIN CONTROL OF YOUR LIFE.
I was desperate when I started this program. I thought that I would never live a normal life again, but after reading this book I am. This program really does work. Great read!
Magnesium can speed up relief of anxiety; please read review.......2005-04-19
I am very familiar with the pain of anxiety, panic attacks, and agoraphobia for I suffered from these maladies for several decades. During those years of suffering I believed that my problems were purely mental and underwent treatment by psychiatrists, psychologists, and hypnotherapists. I took various prescribed medications and read many books such as this, but experienced little relief. And then something wonderful happened: I began taking a daily supplement of chelated magnesium (for a different ailment) and shortly thereafter experienced a significant diminishment of anxiety in addition to cure of the ailment for which I had originally taken the supplemental magnesium. There seemed to be no explanation for why taking supplemental magnesium caused this wonderful loss of anxiety until the publication in 2003 of the important book The Miracle of Magnesium by Dr. Carolyn Dean. Early in her book Dr. Dean reveals that a major cause of anxiety and panic attacks is deficiency of magnesium and that magnesium deficiency is quite common in the U.S. Therefore, I beg all sufferers of anxiety, panic attacks, and agoraphobia -- whatever else you may do -- please purchase and read The Miracle of Magnesium by Dr. Carolyn Dean and please try the magnesium supplementation which she recommends. It may change your life as has changed mine.
more helpful than I could have imagined.......2003-06-13
I began experiencing discomfort and then panic attacks after some stressful periods in my life several years ago. The panic attacks got so bad that I had trouble going to and being at work, going out for entertainment, and at various other times including when I was at home.
For a while I couldn't figure out what was happening to me. After finally figuring out that I was having panic attacks I bought this book. Following the chapters in the book, it took about four weeks to have complete control over my anxiety. The methods for eliminating the episodes were fantastic and have really saved me in many areas of my life.
I would highly recommend this book. It addresses anxiety as well as OCD and various phobias. It's been several years since I got this book and went through it and I have not had a single panic attack since. While I still do experience everyday stress, and sometimes a lot of it - this book has made me better at recognizing and handling very stressful situations far better than I ever could prior to reading it. I wish I had read this book prior to ever having the panic attacks. It will help you change your perspective and turn stressful events into exciting and enjoyable ones.
I can't say enough good about this book - If you have panic attacks or experience anxiety or even just want to improve your ability to handle pressure, you should _definitely_ buy and read this book!!!
A Well balance approach!!.......2003-02-28
A year ago I had a 'panic attack'. I could not seem to get past it. My life seemed to have changed over night. Things got really scary. I've been extremely successful in my career and never before had I felt 'stressed' or even thought about anxiety. I feared that my panic attack was a sign of weakness and my life would crumble.
After reading through several books, I was blessed to have come across this one. Most of the other books I read lost me about half way through when they became corny and unrealistic.
This book is easy to follow and takes you step-by-step through explaining to you what's going on and what you can do about it. I can't tell you how much better I feel already. READ IT!!!

Customer Reviews:
Good but not the best.......2002-01-03
Although this book provides useful information about cognitive (thought) and relaxation strategies that help reduce anxiety, it is not the best available. A better self-help book is THE ANXIETY & PHOBIA WORKBOOK (3rd. Ed.) by Edmund Bourne. Bourne provides more detailed information about and a wider variety of relaxation techniques as well as more information about the rationale behind and research support for the techniques.
Lee J. Markowitz, Department of Psychology, University of Waterloo (Ontario, Canada)
Noteworthy primer on addressing anxiety and phobias.......2001-05-26
This is a small book but it has all the essentials one needs to address anxiety and phobias. Babior and Goldman have done a fine job condensing necessary strategies and providing examples.
Useful but not enough.......2001-05-17
While I liked what this book offered, it did not offer enough. I wanted something that gave me a great deal more information and insight and not just a few basics and exercises. What the authors do, however, they do well. I like how they write. After I read this book I read Diagonally Parked in a Parallel Universe which I found much more enlightening, insightful, personal and useful.
Insurmountable Help.......2001-01-04
I read the book, and am fortunate enough to reside in the same town where Shirley Babior practices. I can't say enough about how she, and the advice in her book, have changed my life. I refer to the book very often because it is an ongoing process to overcome difficult Panic and Anxiety disorder. This book saved me from a future that was certain to be wracked with a lot of unnecessary worry, fear, phobia, and anxieties I thought would never end!!
Excellent guidelines for people who suffer from phobias.......1999-08-27
It surprises me that there is such a detailed book which helps me cope with my social phobia. I feel much more confident now, after reading it. What is so special about the book is that it does not only help readers recover from fears but also help them find the root of the problem step by step. Besides, it explains clearly why people have anxiety problems. I highly recommend this book to those who find their fears very disturbing and want a complete recovery.

Great book!.......2007-08-02
I haven't finished this book yet but it is basic enough to incorporate into your life to help you get through your depression and anxiety.
I have been depressed since the age of 19 and I'm now 36 so I am excited to see how much it can help me in the long run.
Helps w/ the issues (and much more).......2007-06-28
It's been about 3-4 years since I read this book. I was in a dark period after a family tragedy. I'm a very well adjusted and happy adult and this book is a big part of it.
Revolutionary? No. It's just a simple way to re-engineer self-image. What Dr. Joe advocates is 1. disrupt the negative self-talk (all depression patients know about the neg. self talk). 2. replace the negative "ST" with positive "ST." 3. practice this habit over and over until it becomes routine (perhaps the most challenging part). 4. After doing this exercise for about 6-12 months, suddenly you discover that this activity becomes habit, and you then pleasantly discover that your self image is constantly positive and you feel much-much better.
Then, you start to apply this technique to other parts of your life, and, if you're like me, you realize that all that stuff the dali lama preaches is real: you really do have control over your life!
This book requires steady work-hard work which, if practiced, becomes easy with time. Hang in there folks! Stick to the plan and you will find your way out of the dark hole!
Who else do I recommend? Check out Tal Ben-Shahar's books. He's another positive psychologist. Good stuff.
LOGICAL and Basic! Very helpful!.......2007-05-04
This book is for anyone tired of feeling like a victim of their own thoughts. After reading this book I was able to immediately incorporate his techniques successfully. For example, I had a class that always makes gives me anxiety so when I was in class and feeling awful, I looked at the clock and said to myself, "2 more hours. I can handle anything for 2 hours." After that I was fine! It's not just about telling yourself positive things that may be untrue or simply unhelpful, it's about separating fact from fiction. It was true I hated the class, but it was also true that I could handle it for 2 hours. Once you separate fact from fiction you begin to see how your self doubt doesn't need to have the upper hand. You can choose to stop feeling insecure and start LIVING. Negative thoughts stop us from action and freedom from these thought allows us to LIVE. I also recommend the book Dancing with Fear by Foxman, very good and very helpful, but if you want something more pragmatic - buy Luciani's book.
Self Coaching.......2007-03-13
To be honest this wasn't a book that I could get into. I returned it after scanning it.

this book is great. it really puts things into prespective. if give a lot of definitions an backgroud information. It offers a lot of clarity and helps one tackle the life challenging problems of anxiety and depression. i strongly recommend this book

A way to support family and friends.......2002-02-16
Having a close family member recently diagnosed with Panic Anxiety Disorder, I found the book extremely useful in both understanding the illness and knowing how to support this person. The author provides easy-to-understand details about the illness and solid ways of supporting loved-ones. Now, I feel like I can talk to my family member and no longer have to side-step the discussion. A must-read for anyone who has loved ones with this condition.
Panic and Anxiety Disorder: 121 Tips, Real-life Advice, Reso.......2001-09-23
Having personal experience with an anxiety disorder, I found Linda's book to have practical, reassuring information that I have been searching for for a long time. No one can really understand an anxiety disorder unless they have first-hand knowledge of it. The author speaks from her heart. Many of the mental-health professionals I have spoken to do not have this level of insight.
A valuable resource.......2001-09-21
This book is a valuable addition to the others on the subject. Written in a direct and compassionate voice, it provides great insight and assistance to anyone connected to this disorder. I myself do not suffer from it; however, I'm close to a number of people who do. This book is a tremendous help to those of us who must learn to cope with a loved one who has a panic/anxiety disorder. And it provides an excellent tool to begin safely discussing the topic with that loved one. Lastly, I've had the privilege to meet the author on a couple occasions and talk about the issue -- she is truly knowledgeable, sensitive, and passionate about it.
Simple, basic stuff that works........2001-05-24
I'd heard about Linda's upcoming tips book on Panic and Anxiety Disorder, but wasn't really interested in reading it, mainly because it was a "tips" book; I've seen those booklets in the check-out line, and always considered them vague and rather gimmicky. So, when I first picked up "Panic and Anxiety Disorder, 121 Tips, Real-life Advice, Resources & More", not only was I surprised by its book-like appearance, I was also drawn to its calm, down-to-earth approach to self-help. Yes, there are numbered tips, but as I read, I realized this wasn't implicitly for someone coping with anxiety disorders; Linda has written to everybody. Her tips, while pinpointing individual aspects of anxiety, actually address the very simple, basic, moment-by-moment steps to follow in order to successfully survive just about any stressful inner conflict. From digging in the earth to truly relearning the art of breathing, Linda's guidance is straightforward and simultaneously profound. Not leaving any stone unturned, Linda has dedicated an entire chapter to folks who've found themselves in the challenging role of support, and included numerous sources of additional literature and information.
Linda Manassee Buell has written this book with the compassion and personal landscape of someone who's lived in the cave of fear, and who's triumphantly emerged into the sunshine.

TIR has been successfully applied by not only psychologists and social workers but also by ministers and even lay trauma survivors, such as Vietnam veterans.
TIR allows practitioners to address trauma more deeply while simultaneously resolving trauma quickly. This allows practitioners to be more effective and able to handle more clients. Anecdotally speaking, compassion fatigue is virtually unknown among TIR practitioners.

Revolutionary Technique for Traumatic Incident Reduction .......2006-09-23
Beyond Trauma is written for those with a history of trauma who are looking for answers and resolution of their past. It is also written as a resource for mental health professionals who are interested in a powerful and proven approach to resolving the effects of past traumas.
The structure of the book is well organized and arranged so that each chapter is self-contained and stands alone. After reading chapter one which introduces the subject of "Trauma and Traumatic Incident Reduction" (TRI) the reader can move to a specific area of application of interest or need. The chapters cover various experiences such as: trauma experienced by veterans, by crime victims, by victims of terrorism, by those going through grief, and those experiencing trauma as the result of the death of a child, etc. Volkman has dedicated an entire chapter to using TIR in dealing with children. I found this to be interesting and insightful.
Mental health practitioners in addition to gaining insights on the above applications of TRI will also find the chapters on Traumatology, Research Projects, and Integrating Therapies helpful.
The final chapter on Metapsychology will enhance the reader's understanding of why TIR works as it does. This final chapter is made up of articles by Frank A. Gerbode, M.D., former Director of the Institute for Research in Metapsychology. Gerbode has been a leader in establishing Applied Metapsychology.
Informational material and case studies have been provided by experienced practicing Metapsycholoy facilitators from around the world from various points of view who have found TRI effective in their practice. The book shares the stories of people from diverse backgrounds and experiences. Their stories will not only be of interest for the insight they provide the reader but become excellent examples for clinical study. Recorded interviews by Victor Volkman and the testimonies of the victims themselves attest to the success of the TRI approach of treatment.
This second edition of Beyond Trauma is especially timely and important in light of battle scared servicemen returning from the Gulf War. Editor Victor Volkman has added two new chapters and a dozen new articles to this edition. The two new chapters are, "TIR Research Projects," and "TIR in the Workplace." The new articles and papers update existing chapters and shed new light on this revolutionary technique for helping traumatized clients.
Well documented research, tables, appendices, end notes, references and a comprehensive index add to the value of this book as a resource tool for future reference.
I personally found the material relating to veterans helpful. I have a new understanding of the difficulty of those who served in Viet Nam. TIR gives hope for a quicker transition for some of those now serving in the Middle East. Another area of personal interest was the study on "Trauma Resolution in an At-Risk Youth Program." This kind of research is a proactive measure in crime prevention and offers hope for the growing number of at-risk youth in American society today.
These "Conversations on Traumatic Incident Reduction" provide a remarkable resource for trauma victims and professional facilitators alike.
PTSD Encountered and Countered.......2006-04-11
"This is the first time I read about Applied Metapsychology in clinical practice. I am lucky to have come across a concise, eminently-readable, empathic, joy-filled, hands-on text.
Replete with examples, exercises, episodes from the author's life, and tips - this is a must for therapists (the book uses a much more benign term: "facilitators"), clients, and anyone who seeks heightened emotional welfare - or merely to recover from a trauma.
The book avoids the twin traps of professional condescension and incomprehensible argot. The author treats both mental health practitioners and laymen with equal respect and provides them with the tools they need. It is all about enhancing personal growth by finding your place among others - a kind of adult re-socialization for better relationships in the broadest sense of the word.
Contrary to the psychodynamic schools of treatment, Applied Metapsychology, as the author continuously emphasizes, is person-centered. It revolves around the client - it is user-friendly. The therapist is there (if at all) only as a catalyst. The exercises, concepts, and tools made available in this rich volume are geared to be easily applied without external facilitation. Metapsychology strikes me as disintermediation at its best - and this little book is a treasure trove. Sam Vaknin, author of "Malignant Self Love - Narcissism Revisited".

Reviewed by Danielle Feliciano for Reader Views (3/06)
"Beyond Trauma: Conversations on Traumatic Incident Reduction" provides a wealth of information on traumatic incident reduction in a very reader-friendly format. Each chapter is self-contained, making it easy to find information relating to a particular situation without having to read the book from cover to cover. This book contains a detailed explanation of what "traumatic incident reduction" is, as well as offering a wide variety of situations in which TIR would be useful (for instance, grief and loss, crime, terrorism, and accidents). Each chapter has its own reference list, making it easy to find further reading for each particular subject within this book. The book is comprised of the experiences of a number of people with experience with TIR, so the reader is given quite an array of opinions on the subject. The book neatly wraps up with four appendixes, including a well thought out "Frequently Asked Questions" section.
"Beyond Trauma: Conversations on Traumatic Incident Reduction" is an essential reference book for any professional interested in or already working in this area of expertise. Furthermore, it would be beneficial to anyone who has suffered trauma and is interested in a deeper understanding of this particular method of reduction and treatment. It does read a bit like a textbook, which could be intimidating to the average reader. But the information contained within these pages is well worth reading.
Rapid Resolution of Trauma.......2005-09-02
"TIR allows practitioners to address trauma more deeply while simultaneously resolving trauma quickly." ~Victor R. Volkman
TIR (Trauma Incident Reduction) can be used on the frontlines of disasters. It can help people cope with what has just occurred and it can permanently eliminate PTSD (Post-traumatic Stress Disorder) symptoms.
This one-on-one, non-hypnotic, person-centered, structured therapy helps patients to run experience through their minds until insights appear. This time of reflection seems to encourage people to not only face what has happened, but to understand the impact and then to begin the journey out of trauma and into healing.
As a survivor of PSTD, I can truly say this book is rather enlightening. I experienced many of the symptoms discussed in this book after a few very troubling years of major breakups, car accidents and dramatic life changes including surviving a hurricane in the Caribbean on my honeymoon. A hurricane is truly one of the most frightening experiences you can endure. My own experience happened 10 years ago during the same time of year as Hurricane Katrina.
The process I went through to stabilize my own psyche involved many of the techniques discussed in this book, however my recovery was based on friends and family listening. In fact, the main concept in TIR seems to be "listening."
When a patient begins to experience PTSD they may not even realize what is happening. I didn't even know about PTSD or what a panic attack was until I read about the symptoms. People who experience devastation not only have to rebuild their lives, they have to deal with anger, anxiety, panic attacks, flashbacks, claustrophobia, insomnia, nightmares, rage, depression, fatigue, obsessive thoughts, guilt and a number of issues relating to PTSD.
The techniques described in this book will help individuals dealing with adjustment disorders, acute stress, phobias, sexual abuse, domestic violence, mourning and depression. The topics also include crime, grief, loss, abuse, accident victims, loss of a child, loss of a partner and surviving the experiences in a war. There is an excellent example of a woman who goes from experiencing a great loss to recounting the memory and then comes to terms with her grief. Psychotherapists also tell about their experiences and how TIR helped their patients:
When he finished, looked at me and was
crying, he said, "You Know, you are the only person
who has ever listened to me.
I feel better already. ~Alex Frater, Psychotherapist
The next logical step after reading this book seems to be attending a workshop or ordering the TIR and Metapsychology Lecture Series. There is a list of TIR trainers with Q & A to help you decide on a teacher or find out about a website filled with information on TIR. The interviews with people who have training in TIR makes this entire solution much easier to understand. I would suggest reading the question and answer section in the Appendix B first because it truly introduces you to TIR.
This book does seem to be written to encourage professionals to take a TIR workshop. Recommended to Psychologists, Social Workers, Traumatologists, Compassion Fatigue Specialists and anyone interested in Post-traumatic Stress Syndrome.
In my own life and the life of family members and friend I have seen that talking about incidents is more healing than repressing feelings. It might be painful to talk about your experiences, but that is how many people find a path to healing and sometimes you really can't heal the trauma until you face and understand the circumstances that caused the PTSD. The healing seems to be very rapid after you identify the causes and then implement solutions. TIR seems to take patients to a place where they can begin the healing process much more quickly.

Understand and heal trauma.......2005-06-08
Beyond Trauma offers a fascinating look at overcoming PTSD (caused by many different traumatic experiences) through the unique therapeutic technique of Traumatic Incidence Reduction (TIR). I do not have personal experience with TIR, but I am a survivor of childhood trauma and I have dealt with the symptoms of PTSD in varying degrees throughout my life. After reading this book I learned about TIR for the first time and it appears very promising for getting at the root cause of traumatic triggers and finding resolution. In addition the book is divided up into a very easy to read format.
Through reading this book I also gained a deeper understanding of the processes of trauma, triggers and traumatic incidences of PTSD. I learned that when a person experiences a severe trauma, she makes decisions in that moment as a way to cope, to seek redemption or to attempt to prevent it from ever happening again. These decisions continue to affect us until we find a way to resolve them in a healthy way.
In the meantime, while these traumas and decisions remain unresolved we continue to go through life encountering the triggers that bring those emotional states to the surface. As this continues to happen we can then experience re-traumatization and begin to add new triggers into the network of triggers that were present at the time of the initial trauma. Often when a person is being triggered they are unaware of the trigger and experience it as a feeling of rage. Rage can be a destructive force in a person's life. This book offers a way of understanding trauma that can help us to free ourselves from the negative impact that unresolved trauma continues to take on our lives.
After reading this book I am encouraged to further explore TIR, and I have gained a deeper understanding of my own PTSD symptoms and feelings and the impact that has on my life.

A real winner - solid information, with practical, inspirati.......2004-10-20
Having suffered from panic disorder and phobias on and off for about 15 years,I have seen lots of therapists and read lots of books, none of which touched me like Triumph Over Fear. The author, Jerilyn Ross, is the first person I've encountered who combines both the knowledge of someone who has successfully worked with patients for over 20 years with the empathy and compassion of someone who has been there herself. As I read through Jerilyn's personal story and the various case studies of patients whom she has treated I realized that in spite of what well meaning therapists or authors can teach me about panic attacks, only someone who has experienced the irrational, seemingly out-of control spiralling of an attack can give me the assurance and confidence I needed to move forward. In addition, the self-help portion of the book gave me specific, practical things to work on by myself and with my therapist - which ultimately lead me to making wonderful personal progress. I highly recommend this book to anyone suffering from panic attacks as well as to family members trying to understand their loved ones' condition.
Easiest to relate to book on fear.......2004-01-31
I've been dealing with an anxiety problem for about 10 years now, only I have been doing it the wrong way with countless drugs given to me by my doctor. There comes a crossroads when you just can't do it like that anymore. I spent the past 3 years getting off the drugs that have done more harm than good and am now learning what I should have learned in the beginning. I have read a ton of books on this disorder and to be honest, some of them you feel the need to have a dictionary beside you they are so complex. The writers forget they are writing the book for people who are not familiar with medical terminology in their everyday lives. Triumph Over Fear is different from the rest in many ways. First, it is easy to understand for just about anyone and is clearly written. Most importantly, it isn't written by someone who has merely studied the problem but has never actually felt what it's like to go through it. It makes no difference how many medical books you have read, how many people you have met, how many letters you have added to the end of your professional name. Unless you've been through this problem you really cannot fully understand it. This author has and that makes her words that much more powerful. This book should be in everyone's home whether you are suffering currently with anxiety or deal with someone you are trying to help but just can't seem to understand why they feel the way they do. Don't wait as long as I did, your life is waiting but the freedom is in you.
In addition to this book, I recommend "Don't panic"-R. Reid Wilson/ and also "the anxiety and phobia workbook" those are more technical and extremely complete in every detail.
Well written and informative.......2003-06-14
This is a good book. It was referred to me by my psychiatrist for OCD. Although it did not address my issues and help me much with my needs, it did make me realize that my problems compare little to some of the issues and difficulties other people have! I liked the book very much and found it very encouraging and informative.
Covers all the bases.......2003-03-06
Having "been there, done that" (anxiety), I've read a lot of books about the subject and I can highly recommend Triumph Over Fear. It's an inspiring, motivating book that covers all the bases.
I'd been a professional speaker for many years, traveling throughout the country giving presentations and teaching classes, then I was in a car accident and became agoraphobic. I told myself that I'd give myself all the time that I needed to heal; I'd concentrate on my writing and not travel for a while. Giving myself time to heal was a great start--I had another book published during those years (and even had a "brush" with an Oprah producer who pitched the idea of having me on the show)--but it had become easier and easier to stay home. I needed to do more. I had to "work" the ideas in Jerilyn's book so I could get back in my car and drive to the mall and go to the movies and, finally, travel again.
Jerilyn shares her own experience with having had anxiety and having recovered from it, then addresses the various anxiety disorders-agoraphobia, obsessive-compulsive, panic, post-traumatic stress, social phobia, and generalized anxiety-and gives case studies that illustrate each of them. She also discusses treatment options and shares good solid expertise, common sense, and proven exercises.
Being a writer myself, I loved her suggestion to keep a diary. I also liked the idea of labeling the anxiety and paying careful attention to the thoughts and behaviors that trigger it. I worked the program myself rather than with a therapist, although I did attend a peer support group for a while. And yes, it was a challenge to drive to those meetings, but they were so helpful and necessary! At one time my anxiety had become so pervasive that I found myself wondering who I'd be without it. Jerilyn even addresses that issue in the chapter, "Becoming Acquainted with the New You."
Today I'm feeling better than I have in years. Read Triumph Over Fear for a clearer understanding of anxiety and for the proven, practical guidelines for getting on with your life. - Kathleen Hawkins, president of winningspirit.com and author of Spirit Incorporated: How to Follow Your Spiritual Path from 9 to 5
From a woman who's been there........2001-10-16
I've read a lot of books on anxiety, and this is the best. Ross once suffered from an anxiety disorder herself and tried to find treatment, only to be told it was in her head. A lot has been learned about anxiety disorders even in the last ten years, and Ross knows all about it. She not only tells you about the treatment available through therapists (with contact information and resources at the back of the book) but if you want to do it yourself, the book is full of practical advice. I'm the author of the book, Self-Help Stuff That Works, and I can tell you without any hesitation that Triumph Over Fear is self-help stuff at its best. I highly recommend this book. Buy one for yourself and share one with a friend or family member who may suffer without realizing help is available.
