Book Description

Praise for The Cancer Treatment Revolution

"A wonderful journey through modern medical science, told with warmth and insight, brought to life through the stories of people confronting cancer. This book will inspire and educate both laymen and caregivers."
—Jerome Groopman, M.D., author of The Measure of Our Days and The Anatomy of Hope and Recanati, Professor, Harvard Medical School

"This is probably the best book on cancer that exists--beautifully written and unfailingly interesting, conveying a clear sense of hope for cancer patients and survivors. Cancer treatment has come a long way but not without intense struggles and passions, which David Nathan narrates from the inside as one of the leading players. He explains cancer more clearly than anyone else, and his portraits of great cancer doctors are sharp and unforgettable, a contribution to history."
—Richard Preston, author of The Hot Zone and The Demon in the Freezer

"No one is better positioned to tell the tale of the cancer treatment revolution of the last half century than David Nathan. A brilliant physician-scientist, he has been present at the cusps of history in this life-and-death field. The story he tells here is fascinating, and his book is captivating."
—Atul Gawande, M.D., author of Complications: A Surgeon's Notes on an Imperfect Science and Better: A Surgeon's Notes on Performance and Assistant Professor of Surgery, Harvard Medical School

"David Nathan is a true storyteller. In The Cancer Treatment Revolution, he tells stories that bridge cancer patients and cancer research as few others could. These gripping tales will be appreciated by those who live with cancer and those who strive to create new therapies."
—Thomas Cech, Ph.D., recipient of the 1989 Nobel Prize in Chemistry and President of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute

"David Nathan, one of the nation's preeminent clinician-scientists, tells the stories of three cancer patients, revealing compelling human facets--the dedication of the remarkable teams that care for these patients and, even more, the bravery and fortitude of the patients and their families."
—Harold Varmus, M.D., recipient of the 1989 Nobel Prize in Medicine, President of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and former director of the National Institutes of Health

"Engaged by the compelling triumphs and tragedies of patients whose normal lives are inevitably altered by a life-threatening cancer, the reader of The Cancer Treatment Revolution will easily appreciate the impact of the new cancer diagnostics and therapies compared to even relatively recent cancer treatments."
—Karen Antman, M.D., Dean, Boston University School of Medicine

"This personal, highly readable account by one of the leaders of the cancer treatment revolution explains how the revolution has come about and how it will change the future."
—Sir Paul Nurse, Ph.D., President of Rockefeller University and recipient of the 2001 Nobel Prize in Medicine

4 out of 5 stars A promise of Hope.......2007-05-13

The reader is left with the feeling that just around the corner specific cancer killing drugs will be available (as opposed to the current drugs which kill all cells in sight...(which is why patients become gravely ill from "chemo" treatments). The problem is, of course, how far is the corner..10 years, 20, more?

Still,it is worth reading and gives hope where there may only have been despair...

4 out of 5 stars Cancer Treatment Revolution --- review.......2007-05-12

Very clearly written, warm hearted. To me the title suggested a more comprehensive coverage than there is. There is a very good introductory chapter and then 3 individual cases as examples of the medical progress. An excellent start on the subject.

5 out of 5 stars A comprehensive list of all alternative and orthodox treatments for cancer.......2007-10-10

Having been recently diagnosed with colon cancer (removed by operation) and liver cancer (secondary) I needed to know some answers regarding future treatments. Having heard and seen the results of the 'orthodox' route I wanted none of that! This book informed me of all of the alternatives on offer and covered each protocol very thoroughly. I highly recommend this book to every cancer sufferer. You will not be disappointed. Incidentally I chose the Budwig route.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful read.......2007-09-21

I found this book to be very insightful and I took alot of the information and worked it into my life. It shows a lot of ways to improve our health on a daily basis that could make an impact on our future health. Great book for anyone who has a loved one with cancer.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastico!.......2007-09-15

I am an 18-year LIVER, not "survivor," of a diagnosis of low-grade, Non-Hodgkins lymphoma. I have lived 8-10 years LONGER than the "average" person lives with such a diagnosis. I have done that by doing as much alternative treatment---diet, psychology, exercise, supplementation, etc---as possible, and by using mainstream medicine as little as possible.

That said, I will say, about this book, that in my 18 years of researching cancer treatments, this is one of the best, if not THE BEST, books on cancer I have ever had the pleasure to read. It is concise and easy to understand. It is encouraging---it gives the reader real hope. And it is for BOTH those diagnosed with cancer, and for those who have not yet been diagnosed with cancer. I say "not yet diagnosed with cancer" because the statistics, in the United States, at least, say that ONE out of every TWO men will be diagnosed with cancer, and TWO out of every THREE women will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in his or her life. So if you do not yet have cancer, get busy and read this book! If you do have a diagnosis of cancer, get busy and read this book! It is literally a LIFE-SAVER! Even if you were to spend $40 dollars on this book, that is less than you would spend on one visit to an oncologist, and this book will give you 4,000 times MORE GOOD INFORMATION on how to prevent or how to heal from cancer than an oncologist EVER will!

5 out of 5 stars How to Fight Cancer & Win -- Saving Lives.......2007-08-23

The book was purchased for a friend undergoing radiation for lymphnoma cancer in chest (following lung cancer surgery and chemo). She was not very excited that I brought home a book. Eventually, she opened the book and begin to read.

The book has facts about cancer that she had never been told by her doctors. The natural resources, like wheatgrass, for healthy nutrition has made an enormous change in her body and how she has been able to handle the radiation. The doctor keeps asking her, "Are you sure you don't hurt?" Her answer is "No, I feel fine".

5 out of 5 stars Read it........2007-07-23

This book really opened my eyes. I do not know why the American Cancer Association has not looked into trying this remedies. It sure is a pity.

5 out of 5 stars Breast Cancer Husband.......2007-09-26

This book is loaded with practical advice if your wife or loved one is diagnosed with breast cancer. While containing medical information on breast cancer and treatments, it goes beyond that to provide a number of useful suggestions for helping her through a very difficult period. Furthermore, it provides a number of useful suggestions for helping YOURSELF as the supporting partner on this journey.

I found it very useful and recommend it without reservation.

5 out of 5 stars Breast Cancer Husband review.......2007-09-17

A must read for anyone close to the "survivor". Everything so far has been "right on". Sure helps reduce the "unknown" fears. Husband has read; sister has read; and brother-in-law (me) has read and gained from the knowledge and experience conveyed by the author who we wish to thank.

5 out of 5 stars Breast Cancer Husband's...Get This Book!.......2007-05-07

You'll need this advice one way or another. There are some topics you may not want to deal with, but trust me, you WILL deal with them. Your wife's cancer diagnosis doesn't come with a manual...this book is a great start. (Even though you wish you weren't reading it...once the dust settles...you'll be thankful for it.)

5 out of 5 stars Essential if you have breast cancer.......2006-11-30

Poeple who've had a breast scare (or the full thing) will find this book invaluable. Even if it turns out you don't need treatment, you still need support, and that's what this book explains. Really good.

5 out of 5 stars Helpful for survivors, but not everyone survives........2006-09-04

Silver's book is a helpful journalistic guidebook for spouses and partners of breast cancer victims; Part I is made up of 8 chapters and Part 2, 13 chapters. In the forward, Dr. Frederick P. Smith writes, "the support of a spouse can make a significant difference to the patient."

There is one chapter for those of us whose partners didn't make it: "Facing Death."

The period between Thanksgiving and Christmas 2000 is the time that we all faced my wife's death. I didn't know what to do. I called a local hospice and they helped us the last couple of days, advice Silver offers on p. 262-263. There are other points that Silver makes that ring true as well.

I cannot bring back my wife Bahjeh so I do "breast cancer work."

The year after my wife died, I began to talk with the clinic where my wife had been a patient about a project for my students. That went nowhere after I could not find an appropriate assignment; there were already plenty of how-to guides for women.

I use breast cancer stamps on my letters. I support breast cancer fundraisers. I click for mammograms at [...]. I advise my women friends to do self-exams and get mammograms. I mention to my students that they need to pay attention to their health. I make the point that early detection is crucial. I have recently started working on an academic article with a colleague who has breast cancer.

What does any of this accomplish? It's hard to tell.

I cannot go back to that initial incorrect diagnosis in 1985 and shake the doctor and tell him "That might be cancer. We need detailed tests right away." At the time I should have been more suspicious, but we seemed young and healthy with two young sons.

Reading Silver's book will not prevent what happened to my family, but it certainly contains some useful advice for the spouses of survivors.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars too little for the price.......2007-03-31

This book was purchased for non-credit class on the subject of cancer. I feel it is written for an introduction to the subject but does not give the class much to discuss. I would have preferred a text with much more content.

4 out of 5 stars Well structured review as well as entertaining.......2006-12-04

First, in the interest of full disclosure, I'll note that I am Dr. Sompayrac's cousin. But don't let that dissuade you -- I have no trouble giving a bad review of a work if I think it deserves such (see my review of "What the Anti-Federalists Were For" as an example).

Like his previous work "How Pathogenic Viruses Work", Lauren has done a very good job is tacking a complex science and distilling it into a very readable book. His approach to the topic (breaking down normal and abnormal cell division, how DNA mutations arise, relating the multiple mutations required for malignancy, etc.) make the topic understandable to even laymen (which I am one).

For non-professionals seeking to understand cancer (and we all know or loved someone who has had it), this book brings a great deal of perspective. Lauren lists common forms of cancer (leukemia, breast/prostate, lung, etc.) in ways that help us understand the differences in types of cancers, how they may be caused, and why cures are difficult to architect.

Though not as entertaining as his "virus" book (which was more interesting due to the nearly endless variety of viruses and their survival mechanisms), his "cancer" book was equally well thought-out, and almost as well written.

I would recommend this work for two audiences: pre-med students and those considering a career in medicine, and laymen who are hungry for knowledge about cancer. If you survived high school biology and genetics-101, very little of this book will be over your head.

4 out of 5 stars Just right............2006-07-31

I have found this an excellent resource for learning the basics of cancer. This is not difficult but gives you enought science that it doesn't insult your intelligence. I would recommend this to someone that wants to learn the basics of cancer.

5 out of 5 stars Understable and accessible cancer research.......2006-04-28

Excellent book. It provides an overview of the latest advances on cancer research trying to explain its very complex nature. It does so in a clear and direct way. It is amazing how a deep book on such a complex subject can be made so easy to read.

The concepts are explained step by step. The most representative cancers are throughly explained for the layman.

5 out of 5 stars Five stars, and I haven't even read it........2004-02-22

Dr. Sompayrac's other books, on the working of the immune system, and pathogenic viruses, are the clearest molecular biology texts I have ever read. I refer to them constantly in preparation for my lectures, shamelessly steal his authoritative analogies, encourage my students to buy and read them, and hope beyond reason that my ability to teach with incisiveness and wit will one day approach a small percentage his wonderful writing.

Seriously overpriced book that has little new to offer. It is a good book to the extent that it discusses options other than surgery but the author doesn't really offer much guidance among the various options.

Prostate sufferers should consider reading The Natural prostate Cure, by R. Mason. Mason seems to know much more about the topic than Fischer.

    Book Description

Increase the effectiveness of your cancer treatment and live a fuller, healthier life.

According to oncologist D. Barry Boyd, controlling weight, becoming active, and reducing stress are not simply nuances of basic well-being; they are absolutely necessary for the successful treatment of cancer. Even with the best medical care, including chemotherapy, a patient's cancer treatment can be sabotaged if these areas are neglected.

In The Cancer Recovery Plan, Dr. Boyd presents his proven integrative program for maximizing the effectiveness of cancer treatment. He lays out a clear, practical nutrition and exercise plan to help cancer patients lose the weight that might impede their recovery, and describes how to reduce stress with such techniques as meditation, tai chi, massage, improving sleep, and building a support network. Along the way, stories from Dr. Boyd's patients-cancer survivors-provide motivation and inspiration. Cancer is not always a hopeless disease. The Cancer Recovery Plan offers readers the hope they need.

Presented in straightforward, textbook fashion by two nurses--one a survivor of breast cancer and the other a daughter of a cancer patient--Women's Cancers is an easy-to-use resource guide designed to help women diagnosed with or at risk for lung, colorectal, breast, pelvic, uterine, ovarian, vaginal, vulvar, and rare gynecologic cancers. The book begins with a simple overview of potential causes for cancer, explaining how it spreads once contracted.

The authors provide guidelines for detecting a change in one's body: "For me, it was finding a tiny lump in my breast. Something was different. What did it mean?" The importance of early detection and the three phases of the diagnostic process--detection, diagnosis, and staging and grading--are included, along with explanations of common tests used to detect cancers, including mammograms, Pap smears, ultrasound, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The authors provide information to help readers find the right team of doctors to both beat cancer and recover afterwards. Alternative methods of healing are also addressed--such as herbal therapy--as are psychological, physical and spiritual approaches. Sidebars show the side effects to expect from certain drugs, and questions to ask your physician, such as, "Should I get a prescription for a progestin along with estrogen replacement therapy?" While some areas are more general than others, Women's Cancers includes enough details overall to qualify as a comprehensive resource. --Cate Bick

This edition offers new data on the long-term effects of cancer and its treatment, as well as updates on genetic influences, environmental factors, and analysis of complementary and alternative therapies. 70 black-and-white illustrations are included.

5 out of 5 stars This book will be very helpful to all women........1999-08-03

Of all the concerns by women I see in my medical practice, cancer is at the top of the list. This book will be very helpful to all women, not just those who have been diagnosed with cancer. It will also be a resource for women who want to know what she can do to help prevent this all too common disease.

While I do not agree with everything the authors have to say, they have written a book that will prove very useful to women. I especially liked the chapter on alternative and complementary treatment for cancer, which was covered fairly without endorsing any specific treatment. It was made clear that most such treatments have no scientific proof to back up their claims--it is in the area of cancer treatment that millions of dollars are spent each year on treatments with little chance of working.

On the other hand, complementing traditional cancer therapy with a good diet, certain vitamins and nutritional supplements will certainly not hurt, and can give the woman a sense of regaining some control of her life.

I highly recommend this book for all women concerned about their health.

        Book Description

Cancer Survivor Sharon Parker Is on a Mission.
Sharon Parker thought she had a bad case of allergies. But as time went on, she felt instinctively that allergies were not the problem. Sharon asked for a chest x-ray. The x-ray results led to more tests and confirmed her worst fears. She had cancer. As if that news weren’t bad enough, Sharon soon learned that she had two separate cancers—Hodgkin’s Disease and thyroid cancer.
Determined to fight the diseases that threatened her life, Sharon sought out Dr. Andre Goy, internationally known hematologist oncologist at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Thanks to his expertise and treatment, she is alive.
Now, in her memoir, Look Out Cancer, Here I Come, Sharon Parker tells her own story of survival and draws from her experience to offer encouragement to others. Among the advice she shares:

        • Follow your instincts to get more tests. People are misdiagnosed everyday.
        • Don’t be afraid to ask questions of health professionals.
        • During treatment, surround yourself with positive people.
        • Focus on today and plan for tomorrow.
        • Don’t underestimate the power of caregivers and those who offer help.

Today, Sharon’s mission is raising money for lymphoma research through her book and through the Life Lover Foundation, which she founded.
