I use this book often. The illustrations are great and clarifies
which parts of the herb to use. The instuctions covering how to prepare assorted concoctions is essential.
WOW a must have..........2005-09-13
I thought this book was the most complete herbal book I have ever seen. Why? The A-Z listings with the pictures were great. She breaks down the several ways each herb can be used and for what along with making it easy to understand. She includes dried herbs, oil, tincture etc. She shows a picture of each, what to do with each and how to do it. With illustrations she shows how to harvest and dry, how to make herbal remedies, (again with picture instructions) Tinctures, infused oils, along with and creams and ointments. I thought it was extremely detailed and designed for the beginner. I am a true believer in natural medicine and the use of essential oils and herbs but I don't want to take classes or do a huge study to know what or how to use them. This is the answer. Simple, good pictures, complete as I will ever need and for the beginner and advanced alike. This book is a must have!
A little frustrating.......2004-01-21
The book is lovely as far as pictures goes, but she leaves out some basic stuff that a beginner wants to know. I managed to figure it out, but it wasn't easy. For instance, she tells you to use a simple, but then doesn't explain the term.
I bought the book specifically to make eucalypus oil and a cough syrup, but she really doesn't tell you which method, hot or cold. With the herb Comfrey, she tells you it's a hot infusion and with Marigold she tells you it's a cold infusion. Being a beginner, I didn't know the difference between an infused oil and an essential oil, which caused alot of frustration. If she had devoted a couple of sentences under the infused oil section explaining that essential oils are very different and need specialized equipment, it would have saved me some frustration and less disappointment of the book. I had to find this out by searching on the internet.
She is from the United Kingdom and all her recipes are in european measures, so they all have to be converted, and I really had a hard time with that, maybe you won't. Although she does give you a conversion table for dosages. I did manage to make a cough syrup but I had doubts about my calculations. My husband is still alive, by the way.
She mentions Cherry bark as one of the remedies for coughs but doesn't have Cherry bark in the visual directory, which means there is no information on it at all.
After having said all of that, the descriptions and pictures of each plant is wonderful. Also, she lists combinations that are good together, like for coughs. There are 85 herbs listed in the book. It makes a good reference, but I will definately need another book to supplement it.

A must have book! If looking for an exhaustive herbal, you might try the German monographs, and others (although I've yet to see an all exhaustive on herbology), but for home or professional use, this is an awesome book! Has some projects, and many uses for the herbs that are in this wonderful book.
A library wouldn't be complete without it!
An Excellent book for the herbal novice.......2002-10-14
This book is laid out in a way which makes it perfect for the beginner. It has pictures of the plants, any usable parts of the plants, as well as common forms that the plant is used in. The pictures were very helpfull to me in learning to identify different plants, and usable parts. Listed with all the pictures are explinations of the purpose of the herb, and usually a historical note about how it was used centuries ago. Also listed are cautions, about when someone should not take a particular herb.
Secondly, this book has a wonderfull step-by-step instruction guide for making infussions, tinctures, salves, essential oils, decoctions, and capsules out of the plant. Detailed instructions and pictures show each step of the process so well it would be hard to mess it up! There are also instructions and pictures about drying herbs, how to store them, and when to harvest them.
Thirdly, there is a guide of common ailments and a listing of herbs which are usefull with the particular ailment, along with contraindications that would mean the herb should not be used(along with the page number for more information). I have used this many times for a quick check before heading to my local apocathary to know what I should get.
This book is well organised, and the information is easy to find and logically put together.
This would probably not be an incridibly usefull book to an experienced practitioner because I thought there could have been more in depth information about many of the herbs. It mostly gives a general overview. Most of the valuable information does seem geared towards a novice, simply because most experienced practitioners would already know most of the basics contained in this book. Still, this is one book I would think any herbalist of any experience level would like to own.

This is one of the most Informative works on the subject of Hemp that I have read in 20 years. I have been researching Hemp & Marijuana for over 40 years. To date this is one of the most educational compilations of information on the subject that I have found. If everyone in America were made aware of the information in this book, the insanity of the Hemp/marijuana war being waged in this country by overzealot/misinformed
Law Makers and Enforcers would end. Then we could begin building a Billion dollar industry that will save the countries farmers and the world would be a better place.

This is an excellent starter for your search on important facts about hemp and its commercial uses. There are some medical notes in this for those interested. I had the money to purchase a million copies I would give them away. Ho hum. No mun! Please take the facts in this book real serious. No joking. This well researched guide presents fifty popular herbs used for medicinal purposes. The herbs are profiled in an A-Z format (from alfafa to willow) and each entry presents a thumbnail sketch which covers common uses, active constituents, adverse effects, cautions and contraindications, drug interactions, and doses. This is followed by more in depth information covering the description, parts of the plant used, traditional use and current medicinal use and a lengthy analysis of the scientific research that has been conducted on the particular herb. This latter section is referenced and the source materials can be found in the back of the book. The authors, who are licensed pharmacists, are also objective in their statements so the reader is sometimes provided with conflicting research and can make informed decisions. Excellent Reference Book.......2001-01-27
When I was a beginning herb user, I found her Complete Medicinal Herbal enormously helpful. This book is an expansion of that one with the same information plus a great deal more. I recommend it highly to anyone who is not familiar with the world of herb healing. The pictures are excellent and the information comprehensive (warnings for excess use, etc, are very good). I have other books about herbs, but this is the easiest to understand and utilize.
