5 out of 5 stars Stretch Your Body, Mind and Spirit.......2007-07-30

I picked up this book while wandering through the bookstore one day. I looked at the cover and my intuition told me that this book was going to dramatically change my life. I have been using the Meridian Flexibility System for 3 years now and every stretch is still an adventure. I would say this book is but a brief overview when you contrast it with the transformational possiblites it brings to your life. The personality aspects have given me another tool to understand how we "be" in this world and has brought a new level of compassion and understanding for myself and humanity. My only complaint is that Bob is not releasing the sequel fast enough! I have benefited athletically, physiologically and spiritually from this book. It does require you to expand your mind in ways you haven't before and to really get to know and feel your body at a deep level. This is different from a "core" concept because you bring emotionality to the experience-something those from the "physical" world might have a more challenging time tapping into. I work in the field of natural medicine and have used this system with my clients...for athletic rehab, sport training, psychological and physiological therapy. While the system can at first seem difficult to understand you can intuitively and with a little common sense see life altering results. There is no "right" or "wrong" way to do this per se. Many people don't know about meridians or muscle groups the beauty of this system is that you don't need to know. Just start resisting and watch the beautiful transformations that will occur to your whole being. So here's a tip for those that are scratching their heads about the pics, muscles, meridians etc...start with an area of your body that you know to be tight start moving in the direction that FEELS the tightest and RESIST-use your own body, someone elses or a door, floor or anything else that you can leverage to create resistance, have fun and be creative-the key is to RESIST during the entire motion whereever it is on your body that is tight. For all of you in the "mental/thinking" world-you will receive the benefits whether you UNDERSTAND all of it or none of it. Once you try this "free-form", where you don't rely on the book or diagrams but just get down on the floor and start resisting where you are tight you will then be able to go back to the book, if you want and the pieces of the puzzle will start to fit together because you will have already EXPERIENCED what he is talking about! Most of the MF trainers will do inexpensive workshops for small/large groups some will even travel to your area. Bob does an amazing job of tying together lots of persoanl experiences, systems and methods for personal growth and transformation in a short book. It's a STARTING point for something that is largely experiential and unique to each person and that is the beauty of what he is trying to convey. Much of the book's concepts are ideas that we have been trying to implement and understand universally for a lifetime. I think Bob has made huge strides in tying it all together into a comprehensive system. I can only hope that he will continue to document and release his findings so that we can all share in the many possibilites of our own multifaceted transformation. If you are looking for a technical manual on anatomy and muscle groups and want to stick with traditional fitness only concepts this book doesn't fit in that box. If you want to explore more possibilities for powerfully STRETCHING yourself physically, emotionally and spiritually than this is the book for you!!!
Much love and respect to Bob and the whole Meridian Flexibility Family.

1 out of 5 stars Rehashed hype.......2007-07-26

There is no "genius" to this system except getting an endorsement from an Olympic swimmer.
The author contends that he healed himself through stretching. In the process, he also seems
to have found the answer to Life. Just do his program and you will become enlightened in the
process. As a former gymnast and professional dancer who has experienced many systems of stretching and bodywork, I find the book terribly tedious and difficult to follow.
Mr. Cooley does not name the muscles of the body and shows no diagrams for people to
follow. Almost all his stretches come from yoga. A lot of them need partner assistance. That stretching assists meridian flow is obvious to anyone who has studied yoga and hardly a new concept. The book seems geared to selling his rather expensive sessions and getting people to
sign up for his workshops. When I checked his website I found his associates do not seem to
have formal training or degrees other than what Mr. Cooley himself offers. His training seems
to be limited to his own healing which we are to take on faith. If you really want to learn about flexibility check out Pavel Tsatsouline's work. He's funny, down to earth,no-nonsense and has solid credentials. Other great books: Kit Laughlin's Stretching and Flexibility and Sang Kim'sUltimate Flexibility. These are people with solid backgrounds and their books show clear and concise ways of stretching without any snake oil promises of metaphysical rapture. And you don't have to go organic either.

2 out of 5 stars Nothing New.......2007-07-19

I read the book and found nothing new in this book that you wouldn't find in the book Accu-Yoga by Michael Reed Gach which came out in the late 70's or early 80's. Accu-Yoga broke down the effects of Yoga on the physical body and the meridians which are expounded in the TCM system. A lot of the exercises in Mr. Cooley's book are straight from Hatha yoga, although from what I understand the way Hatha yoga is taught today is much more physical, and outward than in the time I came to yoga. Most yoga asanas[poses, postures], naturally have the stretch and resistance aspect built in to them, if you practice them in an concious way. Paying attention to the breath and the inner movement of the body, is the way that I thought yoga was suppose to be. Nothing New!

4 out of 5 stars Stretching Breakthrough!.......2007-06-28

Bob Cooley's, The Genius of Flexibility: The Smart Way to Stretch and Strengthen Your Body, has been a "breakthrough" manual for myself and my patient/clients. As a doctor of chiropractic, I have integrated neuromuscular therapy techniques with chiropractic adjustments for over 30 years. The past 5 years I have added yoga to my own fitness routine and encouraged others to take it up in their's. Stretching has always been in the mix as well, yet I never could "see" how to get past or through the stretch reflex of contraction we all seem to arrive at. Bob Cooley's "aha" during his own journey to health, spoke to me immediately. As I put his technique of "The Principle of Resistance",(contracting the muscle you are lengthening while stretching it) to work, the "aha" happened in me as well! His basic 16 stretches are as far as I've been able to comfortably go during this 1st month, however I look forward to the greater flexibility I know I am moving into. Yes, he does go in a multitude of directions in his book, yet I've never encountered anyone who has experienced life altering experiences not to rebound in ever expanding directions during and following their recovery.
So, for anyone who has a basic knowledge of their body and is led to the concepts of stretching, this is a must read! By the way, page 255 will help one focus on muscles and any specific areas of injury.

5 out of 5 stars this book was the key to recovering from knee injuries/pain.......2007-06-01

This book introduces stretches and strengthening exercises unlike any other I've come across. It is easy to follow, a delight to read and apply. Filled with anecdotes, pictures and a lifetime of research this is a gem for anyone in any shape/size body! It has been the key to heal my knees (from mulitiple injuries), and has helped me recover without needing surgery. The book is practical, eye opening and useful. Truly genius!

5 out of 5 stars great reference book for flexibility.......2007-09-21

I am getting into martial arts at the age of 40. I have good flexability, but wanted more. This book will help you understand not only what stretch you are doing, but why. Excellent choice for beginner to advanced students.

5 out of 5 stars The Book on Stretching .......2007-09-05

This book has helped me develop from a waist high kicker at best to a head high kicker within 6 months. The stretches and drills are invaluable then to top it off, the explanations and anatomical drawings are informative, but easy to understand. Not only is the information vital for you to know as a martial artist, but the author addresses different types of goals and how to set them and stick to them. Indispensable for the martial artist that wants to remain injury free and strong for many years.

5 out of 5 stars Essential for evry type of sporting activity.......2007-07-20

A must have for participants of any sport. This book was so good that I gave a copy to a friend as a birthday gift. It gives detailed instructions for safe, effective, and most efficient stretching and flexibility. Pictures illustrate the actions very well, and the book explains not only the hows and whats, but the the whys of each exercise as well. exercises can be combined by groups of muscles, and by sport.

This is a very realistic approach that is sure to capture the interest and attention of anyone who desires a greater degree of flexibility than they now have, regardless of age.

I am 53 years old. I have used the methods in the book for a little over a year, and they have really worked well for me.

When Bob Anderson first published Stretching in 1980, the fitness movement was new to most Americans. The term aerobics had just been coined in 1968, and few people outside bodybuilding circles had heard of Arnold Schwarzenegger yet.

Now, fitness is such old hat that it's even had a backlash or two. Lots of the original ideas have been called into question, including the preeminence of aerobic exercise. But flexibility is bigger than ever; Pilates and yoga are two of the fastest-growing fitness programs in the U.S. in the early 2000s. The type of stretching Anderson recommends--called "static," meaning you sit in one place and hold the stretch for a specified amount of time--isn't exactly trendy, but it remains the most accessible way for entry-level exercisers to improve their flexibility. (Or, perhaps more important, to keep from losing whatever flexibility they have as they get older.)

Those who already have the version of the book that's been put out by Shelter Publications since 1980 won't find a whole lot that's new in this 20th-anniversary version. Some of the simple drawings by Anderson's wife, Jean, have been updated to show athletes in sport-specific outfits doing stretching routines, and there are more routines than before. The new edition includes routines for children, stretches to do in front of the TV, and some exercises to do before and after gardening. Plus, the old staples remain--stretching routines for all muscle groups, and pre- and postplay sequences for common sports (football, baseball, basketball) and a few uncommon ones (equestrian, motocross, rodeo). He's also created routines for sports that barely existed in 1980, such as snowboarding, triathloning, and inline skating.

The constant in Stretching is ease of use. Anderson doesn't need a lot of complex explanations because the drawings are so easy to follow. He makes it clear that stretching should make you feel better, not worse, and that it's not a competition. Any little bit you can do is better than not doing anything. That's a timeless message, which is why his book has been such an valuable reference for the past 20 years. --Lou Schuler

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the best fitness book.......2007-10-10

It is one of my preferred exercise books. It's very easy to follow the routines, due to a very good structurated combination of excercises instructions and drawings. I ussually run and I used to make certain stretching exercises, however now that I have tried the book guidelines of how to stretching and the routines included in the book, I realized that I was stretching in a wrong way. I ussually stretch in the morning, after been seating for a long time and before going to bed and I feel really great!!

5 out of 5 stars A very flexible book........2007-09-29

I liked this book on stretching for several reasons. The first is its simplicity. The pictures and instructions are very straightforward, making it quite easy to do basic stretches. Stretches are given for just about every muscle and limb you'd ever want to stretch and the author has even included some suggested stretching routines for various sports. Whether you're a competetive athlete, business person or housewife, I feel that this is book will have something to offer everyone making it a very handy and "flexible" book. Also recommend Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff for anyone looking for more specific rotator cuff and shoulder stretches.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Ideas For Stretchin.......2007-09-26

I got more ideas for stretching from this book, than I thought possible. I am definitely feeling looser from it. Also, it recommended the theracane, which I also got. Cool stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Every family should own a copy.......2007-09-07

I was surprised that stretches are for everyone. The older you are and the poorer your health, the more important stretches are to you. There are also streches for particlular sports and for youngsters.

The stretches are pictured using easy to interpret cartoon drawings with simple descriptions.

Definitely not just for health-care professionals but for everone.

5 out of 5 stars Stretchinng.......2007-06-13

I have had 2 neck surguries and 2 lower back surguries and this book is a life saver, have tried others but none are as clear or simple to understand.

A massage therapist friend of mine recommended this, and it has great pictures and thorough instructions. Great for keeping your back and neck from going out!

5 out of 5 stars Best Book on Stretching.......2007-04-11

This book will change how you think about stretching. It explains what is wrong with the way many people stretch. It is good for athletes as well as for people like me that have lost range of motion in my shoulder joints. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Good book!.......2007-02-02

I'm a middle aged woman who hates to exercise but I do it because, well . . . we must ;-)
My massage therapist recommended this "Active Isolated Stretching" book to me and I'm amazed at how much flexibility the exercises quickly produced. The instructions are clear and simple to follow; the photographs show proper position. The laminated cover and spiral binding are a plus, too; the book actually stays flat and open to the page you are working on!

5 out of 5 stars A.I.S........2007-01-05

Aaron Matte has isolated the muscles for stretching. These stretches
will help you get the results you want as a pain relief therapist.

5 out of 5 stars Rids you of pain you didn't know was muscular!.......2006-09-11

This book turns the idea of long-held, static stretches on its head. The stretching methods shown are not relaxing and can cause the opposing muscle groups to also need stretching -- but the results are nothing short of astonishing for sports injuries and even for the muscle tightness that accompanies arthritis.
The book is grouped into sections for the shoulder, elbow/wrist/arm/hand, neck, hip/knee, back/trunk, and ankle/foot. All stretches are shown in photographs in at least two stages, those you do by yourself, and those one would assist another with are shown in separate sections of the book.
It is as much a text as a how-to book. It could be more user-friendly, (you may need to re-read the instructions several times) but the book is comprehensive, and the stretches are ingenious. This book is definitely worth the investment not just for athletes, but anybody with aches and pains.

5 out of 5 stars Slow Burn review.......2007-08-06

Just read this book and thought that his basic idea/theory was very interesting and revolutionary. The thought that you really can't improve your heart or lungs only your muscles is totally new to me and most interesting. I'm going to put his ideas to work.

5 out of 5 stars Looks Like The Best Program For Low Carbers.......2007-07-07

I actually bought this book because I had set out to buy "The Cardio-Free Diet", by Jim Karas. I found out about Slow Burn and bought it, too, as well as the 2 Protein Power books.

I have been doing a cardio workout on a stationery bike for about 5 years. I have been spending over three hours a week, and am no longer happy with the results. It seemed no longer to be doing anything. Reading this book told me why.

The Karas approach and the Slow Burn approach are very similar. However, the diet part of Mr. Karas program is not workable for me. I have been a low carber for 6 years and have lost 86 pounds. Mr. Karas' diet approach is low-fat/low-calorie/low-protein/sort of low-carb. See a pattern there? I could never follow that program without ruining my diet efforts. Slow Burn was written by Fred Hahn, the fitness expert, and the Drs. Eades, experts on the low carbohydrate diet. For anyone who is or wants to be low carb, this is the one to buy.

Also, I haven't actually started my Slow Burn workouts yet. It took me a couple of months to read all my books. For the Slow Burn program there is not much one has to buy, but I do still need a couple of things so I haven't started yet. Reading the other comments about people's results in just a month or two has recharged me! I'm looking forward to jumping in.

5 out of 5 stars awsome.......2007-06-02

where all other fitness books fall short. this one doesnt....the authors hit a home run with this..it gets to the point, explanes why, and pictures show you how. i liked the idea you can actually do this at home for little or no money..

4 out of 5 stars Very Enjoyable.......2007-05-29

Very interesting book. After reading it, I felt convinced of the author's ideas, and was excited to start using their program. Wish the book had a little more heft, detail, and described more evidence that supported their case that their form of exercise was the best. Subtract the pages on how to do various exercises, that I found redundant as someone who has lifted weights frequently in the past, and you have a pretty short book. I felt it was worth it though to find out about their method. The method, by the way, was one I had heard about years and years ago. A bodybuilder named Mike Mentzer popularized what he called the "Heavy Duty" training system, which is about the same as the "Slow Burn" system. The "Super Slow" system is the same as well, really. What I wanted out of the book was evidence to convince me that this was the best method, and a little guidance, and I felt that I got that from the book, so I was happy.

2 out of 5 stars SLOW GOING.......2007-04-16

The first 85 pages of this book try and sell the reader on weight training, and discourage people from running.
Another book uses the supper slow method to get amazing results the book: Bigger Muscles in 42 Days by Ellington Darden. In this book he uses the supper slow method to help the man pictured on the cover build 34 pounds of muscle in 42 days. The supper slow method woks but I am not sure that you can get everything out of the gym in just 30 min per week. When I did the Darden program 15-20 min. 6 says per week is all I could do at the gym. The Darden program had me working 4x more than this program. You can skip this book if you know that each exercise is doe for ten seconds up, and ten seconds down. Working your muscles until failure.

Book Description

See inside every stretch--and maximize flexibility! Stretching Anatomy will arm you with the knowledge to increase range of motion, supplement training, enhance recovery, and maximize efficiency of movement. You'll also gain a detailed understanding of how each stretch affects your body.

Stretching Anatomy is like having an X-ray of each stretch, only better. Not only do you see full-color illustrations of the muscles in action, but you also find out how changes in position can alter the muscle emphasis and difficulty and how variations can improve safety and effectiveness.

Each exercise includes detailed instruction on how to stretch, when to stretch, primary and secondary muscle emphasis, and which muscles are activated for support. Stretching programs provide three levels of difficulty, including light stretching that can be used as a warm-up or to aid in recovery from soreness or injury. And summary movement tables show how to customize stretching programs to focus on key problem areas.

5 out of 5 stars A great stretching resource!.......2007-09-23

I've been a runner and athlete for over a decade, and even having learned dozens of stretches along the way, this book was well worth the money. It's very comprehensive - contains stretches for every muscle group and even describes the supporting muscle groups you're using when doing a particular stretch. The visuals are clear and helpful as well. The explanations are very easy to follow, and I love that it gives tips within each stretch for increasing the intensity or stretching slightly different muscles with a slightly different motion.

4 out of 5 stars Great help.......2007-09-12

I am a Pilates Instructor, and I have one client who has very tight shoulders, neck and chest muscles. This book helped us get some good ideas for the best stretching techniques to help him stretch out those areas.
I would probably recommend this book to people who have really tight muscles. All the stretches are easy to do anywhere.

5 out of 5 stars Superior reference and information for correct stretching.......2007-07-23

Love this book. Clear pictures and brief explinations of what muscles are being stretched and how to stretch them correctly.

5 out of 5 stars Great stretching book!.......2007-07-03

I have used this book to not only show and teach clients and patients proper stretching techniques, I have recommended it as a tool for the Physical Therapist at my job, and used it for myself. Illustrations are detailed with specific muscles described in each stretch and are very helpful in understanding the anatomy of each stretch - great book for ANYONE, especially pre- and post-workout for athletes! I also recommend "Stretching" by Bob Anderson in conjunction with this as a teaching tool.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to follow and informative.......2007-06-29

Great book for me and my massage therapy clients. Easy to follow, great photographs, informative.

3 out of 5 stars Feel the pain.......2007-07-23

Ugh... Too tough for this old guy.

I think it would have been great had I started 25 years ago, a few of the exercises are useful to those that are over the hill, but be careful. The distance between ahhh.. and pure pain is pretty narrow.

4 out of 5 stars Pavel Does It Again.......2007-05-13

Good Day to All,
I own a few of Pavels books, this being another excellent source to train my soccer team. The book certainly gives you a different look at stretching, though I had learned many of the techniques when I was a Martial Artist and Special Forces Soldier I have never seen it broken down into easy to understand articulate writings before this. Pavel has done an excellent job with this subject giving good lessons from history just as he has done before with kettle bells, free weights and body weight exercises.

4 out of 5 stars Relax into Stretch - Simple and Straight-Forward.......2007-03-14

I have both this book and Thomas Kurtz' Stretching Scientifically, and I consider both of them worthwhile additions to the personal library. Kurtz goes into much more technical detail, and it is pretty "heavy reading". If you are a person who wants to be bombarded with scientific reasoning for your stretching, this is the book for you. He also has sample workout plans for your specific activity (martial arts, gymnastics, etc), but I found them a little abbreviated. He also gives a "schedule of stretching" in regards to days of week to do strength training, isometric stretching, endurance training, etc. Finally this book has an extensive Q&A/FAQ section.

Pavel takes a humorous approach to deliver a very similar message. He also includes many more photos if you tend to be more "visual". He does break it up into "basics" and "advanced", and there will be cases where he states to not proceed with a particular stretch if you have not reached a certain flexibility milestone; instead, continue with the more basic stretch. I would like to have some sample workout plans/stretching schedules included in the book. This book just references Pavel's other books in terms of stretching schedule (Day 1 - Book 1, Day 2 - Book 2, etc). This book also burns a few too many pages on promoting Pavel's other products.

I can't speak to the results because I haven't fully adapted a stretching program yet. I am doing the stretches, but I have not committed to the twice daily stretching that both recommend.

Although I appreciated the heavy content of Kurz's book, I find myself referencing Relax into Stretch more frequently.

5 out of 5 stars Flexibility Instruction That Works, Plain and Simple.......2006-07-26

I went from not being able to touch my ankles, let alone my toes, to full side splits, and it took only six months. If you want flexibility training the right way, with clear simple instructions that really work, you need look no further. Pavel is a master teacher, one who understands why things work in great detail but Relax Into Stretch is not a textbook, it is a how-to manual. Pavel goes into great detail about the techniques you need to do to improve your own flexibility. The devil is in the details, and Pavel makes sure you know everything you need in order to safely improve your flexibility.

If you have decided you want to improve your flexibility, buy the book, follow the instructions without trying to think too much, and you will have your results. Ordinary people can be extraordinarily flexible and strong, and Pavel is the man to help you make it happen for yourself.

1 out of 5 stars should be entitled: "Re-hashed".......2006-06-04

Pavel wrote a precursor to this book which he admitted wasn't "user friendly." (a ridiculous euphamism on his part) His first book contained the following: several drills that were basically useless including his version of chest stretches, rocking the head from side to side, and simply reaching for the ceiling on tip-toes. also, there were drills that were already well known and done in high school gym classes all over america like toe touching, standing and bending to the side while reaching overhead and the common split. Lastly, he incorporated what he called shutdown threshold isometrics. now that i'm attending school to become a physical therapist assistant i've come to discover that this maneuver is nothing new to the stretching/physical rehab world and is occasionally just given a new name by a fitness instructor to make it seem like they know something that most don't.
Now, how exactly does his newer book differ? IT DOESN'T! well, in all fairness he doesn't use the term shutdown threshold isometrics anymore, but still teaches the same exercise. and he did get rid of some of the completely obsolete exercises from the first book, but most of the exercises are exactly the same, just rehashed with different names like "the jackknife" if i remember correctly. If you are a complete beginner to stretching, then by all means read a book on fitness and stretching, but don't spend over 20 dollars for a book that is comprised of "nothing new" methods and several pages of advertisements of other pavel/dragondoor products! Or better yet, try a public library. remember though that just because pavel uses references to russian special forces training and denounces certain "overused" american training methods doesn't mean that he's offering you something new and exotic. In fact it's just rehashed info.

One of the dirty secrets of the fitness world is that for all the talk about the importance of stretching, many athletes and other fit people don't bother with it. It's hard to gauge the benefits, and it seems as if the time could be better spent running, lifting weights, or perfecting sports skills. This sentiment is expressed by Dr. Bob Arnot in the foreword to "The Whartons' Stretch Book," and he says that the Whartons changed his mind. He went to them with a stiffened hip that he thought needed surgery, but after a regimen using the active-isolated stretching technique, his flexibility in that hip had increased 40 percent.

Active-isolated stretching is very different from what your high-school gym teacher made you do. Rather than holding a stretch for a half-minute, you hold it for just two seconds. This prevents the muscle from activating an instinctual braking device to keep itself from overstretching. Traditional stretching forces that braking to occur, and the Whartons think that's not only counterproductive, but dangerous. If you force too deep a stretch while the muscle is doing all it can to keep itself from being stretched, something's got to give. And a torn muscle will repair itself with scar tissue, ultimately making that muscle less flexible.

The Whartons--a father-and-son personal-training team who've worked with many pro athletes and Olympic medalists--show you how to use their stretches to prepare for dozens of sports, from aerobics to wrestling. Nonathletes get an entire section of the book, which describes stretch routines to get your body feeling better after prolonged driving, sitting, standing, and word processing. The routines are a bit on the longish side--20 minutes or more--but it doesn't seem like much time when you think of how long you have to live in your body, and how much better it will feel if you keep it supple and flexible. --Lou Schuler

Book Description

Whether you're a serious competitor or weekend warrior, you know that proper stretching before and after your workout can improve your performance, increase your flexibility, help prevent injury, and make you feel better. But did you know that the traditional way of stretching -- lock your knees, bounce, hold, hurt, hold longer -- actually makes muscles tighter and more prone to injury?

There's a new and better way to stretch: Active-Isolated Stretching. And with The Whartons' Stretch Book,  the method used successfully by scores of professional, amateur, and Olympic athletes is now available to everyone.

This groundbreaking technique, developed by researchers, coaches, and trainers, and pioneered by Jim and Phil Wharton, is your new exercise prescription. The routine is simple: First, you prepare to stretch one isolated muscle at a time. Then you actively contract the muscle opposite the isolated muscle, which will then relax in preparation for its stretch. You stretch it gently and quickly -- for no more than two seconds -- and release it before it goes into its protective contraction. Then you repeat. Simple, but the results are outstanding. The Whartons' Stretch Book explains it all.

Part I contains the Active-Isolated Stretch Catalog, with fully illustrated, easy-to-follow stretches for each of five body zones, from neck and shoulders to trunk, arms, and legs -- over fifty stretches in all. Part II offers specific stretching prescriptions for over fifty-five sports and activities, from running, tennis, track, and aerobics to skiing, skating, and swimming. You'll also find advice on stretching for daily activities such as driving, working at a desk, lifting, and keyboarding. Part III discusses stretching for life, with specific recommendations for expectant mothers and older athletes. It also includes specific stretching exercises that could help you avoid unnecessary surgery.

Give Active-Isolated Stretching a try for three weeks. You'll never go back to your old stretching routines again.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This book is a lifesaver.......2007-07-29

I bought this book after injuring my shoulder. My arm had locked to the point I could barely move it. Any attempt to move the arm resulted in extreme pain. I did the exercizes every day, and after a few weeks, the scar tissue began to break, motion returned and the pain eventually ceased. Other reviews say 20 minutes a day is "too much" time. Are they kidding? Twenty minutes out of 24 hours? Years later my bicycle was hit by a careless truck driver. My left shoulder, elbow, hip and hand/wrist were injured. The hand needed surgery to remove a bone. The wrist and hand developed arthritis. Because I keep doing the exercises, and have incorporated the strengthening exercises, I am not crippled. I still ride my bicycle, work in the yard, and do what I did before. If this book isn't "scientific" then why do physical therapists and doctors recommend it?

4 out of 5 stars Older folks need to stretch - Wharton shows us how........2007-07-16

I've been hearing about the increased role of stretching in a person's fitness routine as they age, but didn't know much more than a few basic stretches. The Wharton's provide scores of stretching routines, grouped by body area. More importantly, they teach the proper procedure so your body does not counteract the stretching, which would waste your time. Diagrams are provided, they may be a little tough to figure out. I use this book every week to lead my stretching routine.

2 out of 5 stars Poor illustrations make book almost unusable.......2007-07-03

The pencil drawings are terrible. In the pictures requiring you to bend your knees, it's almost impossible to tell whether to bend the knee toward the chest, at a right angle from the body, etc. The text doesn't help clarify matters in most cases, and besides, if I'm actually doing the stretches, I don't want to take the time to read the wordy descriptions.

The "sports-specific" section is anything but. For the most part, they instruct you do to all the stretches, maybe in varying order. Far too time consuming for most people.

Finally, I found it quite difficult in some cases to "contract the opposite muscle" to make the stretch effective. And in any case, I find that focusing on the opposite muscle contracting takes the enjoyment out of feeling the stretch.

3 out of 5 stars It helps to get the DVD.......2007-05-19

Gave the book 3 stars just because I too was having problems figuring out the exercises in the book and decided to get their DVD. The DVD takes out all of the guess work and gives you 48 mintues of great exercises. Book: 3 Stars. DVD: 5 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Good book but..........2006-11-05

I love the Whartons approach to the back and general physical health-but the "stretch book" does not have as good pictures as the "Back Book" It is unnecessary to have both. The Back Book is great. It is not just for back pain, but any minor aches and pains. I am a Family Practice Physcian and reccomend all my patients who have back problems or want to start a sensible exercise program to use this book. Highly reccomended program and it works!! Any one from skinny to obese from children to octogenarians can benefit from this program.

Book Description

Based entirely on research from peer-reviewed journals and randomized controlled trials, Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff is a complete program to prevent and rehabilitate rotator cuff injuries for athletes and non-athletes alike. In less than 100 pages, readers will learn precisely how the rotator cuff works, what can go wrong with it, and then are guided step-by-step through an evidence-based program that takes just minutes a week to complete. Drawing from the latest rotator cuff research, Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff is especially useful for those who have been diagnosed with either a partial or full-thickness rotator cuff tear, experience shoulder pain, do upper body weight lifting, play a sport or have a job that involves repeated arm motions above shoulder level, have been diagnosed with "impingement syndrome," or for anyone simply wanting a healthy and properly functioning rotator cuff.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Excellent resource on treating and preventing injuries..........2007-09-06

This is a great book that concisely explains the anatomy and physiology of the rotator cuff including the bones, muscles, biomechanics, etc. in just enough detail for the average person to understand. It also describes how to distinguish between different types of injuries, how to approach rehabilitating them and collects a lot of rotator cuff injuries in one small volume. While the book is rather expensive for its size, it packs a lot of well-explained information into a small space.

I'm an ex-physiology teaching fellow and scientist. I thought this book was great and turned something that is often difficult to explain into something anyone who can read can understand. The diagrams are good and the book contains no unnecessary detail.

I also agree with other reviewers that while Jim Johnson isn't an expert on rotator cuffs, his book is thoroughly researched and he does have a PT credential and has undoubtedly had 15 years of clinical experience in a teaching hospital environment. This suggests he has a very good nuts and bolts understanding and hands-on experience.

5 out of 5 stars Johnson is "magic"!.......2007-07-09

This is the second book of Jim Johnson's that I have bought. The first one fixed my back pains with a simple exercise to strengthen the Multifidus muscles.

The exercises in this book has significantly reduced pain and increased mobility in my left shoulder, allowing me to sleep through the night and lift my arm over my shoulder.

5 out of 5 stars Review of, "Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff".......2007-06-13

I ordered this book for my brother-in-law who has experienced shoulder pain and not being able to lift his arm higher than shoulder level due to a rotator cuff injury he received in the past. I recommended it to him because of the wonderful results I got using the information in this book to treat my own right shoulder pain.

Having previously read, Jim Johnson's, The Sixty-Second Motivator, and finding it very helpful, I can tell you that I certainly had the motivation to try and stick with an exercise that would relieve my painful and restricting condition. And it sounded to me like my brother-in-law was in the same boat.

I used the Sidelying External Rotation exercise on page 55 of the rotator cuff book and got great results. The first time I tried it I could only manage to raise a 20 ounce can of pineapple about half way up less than ten times. I found the detailed instruction, precautions and notes particularly helpful and feel that carefully following them was why I experienced the gradual recovery. My wife sat beside me making sure I did the exercise slowly and exactly as the book states. After about four weeks I actually worked up to fully raising the can of pineapple 20 times. Later on I increased the weight little by little and began to feel good enough to resume some of the more physically demanding activities on our small farm.

Last week I was actually able to assist with harvesting our hay and didn't suffer during or afterward from any of the shoulder pain or stiffness that I had previously experienced many times. Yes, I was careful about what I did and how I worked, but for me to even attempt to try stacking a 60 pound bale of hay was completely out of the question a few months ago. I went from shoulder pain that caused me sleepless nites and not being able to lift my right arm any higher than shoulder level, to what I consider a darned good day's work.

This book is a real bargain and indeed I consider it invaluable when I think about how it helped me. And as you can see, I heartily recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars So far, so good.......2007-05-11

Just as the book promised, I had a eureka! moment the other day. I bought this book because I have been having unidentified rotator cuff problems for years (I was a baseball and now am an avid softball player). Because everyone talks about rotator cuff tears, I assumed that's what my problem was. After reading Johnson's book, I was surprised and pleased to discover that my problem was most likely simply an impingement, and that no matter what your unspecified problem it is, it is likely to improve from his exercises (he cites the studies that prove this claim). Prior to starting his exercises, it was painful to soap up in the shower, sleep or do anything where I had to reach my back. Now, after just a month of the stretches and strengthening exercises I realized all of a sudden the other day (eureka!) that I have no pain in my shoulders! My range of motion is not where it should be yet in one shoulder, but it's improving. I still have a ways to go, but I'm encouraged by my progress so far.

Johnson's book is written to help people with all severity of rotator cuff problems. Anywhere from being unable to lift an arm overhead to near full utility of the joint. He also gives you measurements by which you can judge your flexibility, which is also nice to help you figure out what "normal" is.

I suppose the question still remains: why don't you just go to a doctor, idiot? I suppose the real answer is the inconvenience of going, the cost, and primarily, just that I'm a DIYer type my nature, and like to fix things on my own when I can.

The only reason I didn't go to 5 stars was because I got the impression from the book that Johnson is really just a guy (in the field) who reviewed some studies and came up with a program. Now, that's a great way to go about things, but I would not call him an *expert* on rotator cuffs. On the plus side, that does make him very easy to understand, as opposed to some of the surgeons out there who have written on the subject.

5 out of 5 stars Must reading for the elderly - and for the rest of you too........2006-07-06

This is a wonderful book. As the result of an accident many years ago I was introduced to stretching to limber things up, and for the past fifteen years (I'll be 90 in a few months) I have been diligent in streching five time per week. Have gone to stretch classes, done yoga, read seveal books, have seen tapes etc. etc; and , believe me, his book is far and away the BEST and most COMPLETE work on the subject. No matter your age if you follow these exercises wisely you will avoid the slouch, the stoop and the general structural limitations and weaknesses which come with advancing age. And if you're over 60 and do the exercises regularly you'll have some fall protection (and remember that falls are the common fatal disease of the elderly.) We can't do anything about our genetics but we can use what we're given at birth with wisdom. Great Book!
