5 out of 5 stars I could kiss her!.......2007-09-30

This book really helped us get our lives back into order after our baby was born. It gave us a bunch of different ideas to try as opposed to one dogma that we had to fit our family into. Thanks, Elizabeth!

4 out of 5 stars A gentle, more sensitive and flexible Gina Ford approach.......2007-09-11

I followed Gina Ford's Contented Baby book The New Contented Little Baby Book schedule with our first child, but years later had some trouble letting our second child cry it out like we had done with our first since her cries seemed so much more urgent and needy. I have read through Elizabeth Pantley's no-cry sleep solution and 90% of the advice and creation of schedules (however flexible) is the same as in Gina Ford's books. No matter what the title says, there still is a bit of crying involved, but it is more focused on learning to tell the difference between different cries and leaving a child who is crying alone if it is part of her normal settling back down. All very similar to gina ford's information yet her books always get labelled as cruel (unfairly).

I really like the compassionate tone of this book and the practical manner she lays out the plan and strategies for getting your kids to sleep through the night no matter what bad habits they have become accustomed to. I think the fact that she is a mother of 4 that came by these techniques through trial and error with her own kids and then took on a trial team of mothers across the globe to try out her techniques gives the book a lot of validity and integrity.

I would highly recommend it to any mother or father struggling with a child's sleep difficulties, it will make life easier for all of you. I am not giving it 5 stars because of all the hype and advertising that describe this as a radically new approach that has never been suggested before, when in fact it is a very familiar, albeit successful approach, that has been injected with a more sympathic voice.

1 out of 5 stars Didn't work for us..............2007-09-10

I tried this method for over two months with my then 11 month old son. We went exactly by the book and it didn't work at all. We didn't make ANY progress in the 2.5 months we attempted this method. Although it seems like a great approach for those who practice attachment parenting, such as I do; but as a full time nursing student and single mom~ I needed any extra minute I had to study. I attempted this method over my summer break, and like I previously stated, it didn't work for us, even though I did exactly as the book said. Good luck!

3 out of 5 stars Useful, no new science.......2007-09-06

I bought this book because I thought my situation was desperate!!! By reeading this book I found out that I was much better of than most people, and in a much better situation than the examples she writes about in this book.

My starting situation was two (three rarely) awakenings every 3-4 hours, witch is completely normal and has been like that scince my baby was born. Now with 6 months I wanted a change and how I was determined not to let my baby cry it out I bought this book.

While I was reading this book I found out that I had been doing most of her ideas scince my baby was born!!! not because I read them, but because I had thought of them on my own.....(routine, music, bath, regular naps, early bedtime...) I even had given him a soft cloth to snuggle with that had my smell.....The pantley gentle pull off...I had been doing that too!!!!

So, my conclusion is that with common sense, great results can happen because now my baby is down to 1 awakening (totally managable)and sleeps sometimes 8 hours straight.

I think the book is educational if you don't know anything about babies or if you lack common sense. It is well written and easy to read. I would recommed for first time moms.

5 out of 5 stars FINALLY - A METHOD THAT WORKS!!.......2007-08-27

What a fantastic book this is! I have read 2 other baby sleep books but this is the one. Many books just talk about theories and vague ideas. Elizabeth Pantley actually gives you practical advice that you can use and alter to your own needs! I was about at my wits end with our 15 month old son when I came across the NO CRY METHOD. I was so worn down and was always worrying about how long it would take to put him down at night. Elizabeth gives some wonderful advice on how to get through that while working through the METHOD. She gives a step by step process that you can try for getting your baby to sleep on his/her own and sleeping through the night. I even emailed Elizabeth and kindly returned my email with more wonderful advice or insight. My son isn't a perfect sleeper yet, but he's close! Thanks Elizabeth.

Book Description

In perhaps the most important parenting book of the decade, Dr. Harvey Karp reveals an extraordinary treasure sought by parents for centuries --an automatic “off-switch” for their baby’s crying.

No wonder pediatricians across the country are praising him and thousands of Los Angeles parents, from working moms to superstars like Madonna and Pierce Brosnan, have turned to him to learn the secrets for making babies happy.

Never again will parents have to stand by helpless and frazzled while their poor baby cries and cries. Dr. Karp has found there IS a remedy for colic. “I share with parents techniques known only to the most gifted baby soothers throughout history …and I explain exactly how they work.”

In a innovative and thought-provoking reevaluation of early infancy, Dr. Karp blends modern science and ancient wisdom to prove that newborns are not fully ready for the world when they are born. Through his research and experience, he has developed four basic principles that are crucial for understanding babies as well as improving their sleep and soothing their senses:

· The Missing Fourth Trimester: as odd as it may sound, one of the main reasons babies cry is because they are born three months too soon.

· The Calming Reflex: the automatic reset switch to stop crying of any baby in the first few months of life.

· The 5 “S’s”: the simple steps (swaddling, side/stomach position, shushing, swinging and sucking) that trigger the calming reflex. For centuries, parents have tried these methods only to fail because, as with a knee reflex, the calming reflex only works when it is triggered in precisely the right way. Unlike other books that merely list these techniques Dr. Karp teaches parents exactly how to do them, to guide cranky infants to calm and easy babies to serenity in minutes…and help them sleep longer too.

· The Cuddle Cure: the perfect mix the 5 “S’s” that can soothe even the most colicky of infants.

In the book, Dr. Karp also explains:

What is colic?

Why do most babies get much more upset in the evening?

How can a parent calm a baby--in mere minutes?

Can babies be spoiled?

When should a parent of a crying baby call the doctor?

How can a parent get their baby to sleep a few hours longer?

Even the most loving moms and dads sometimes feel pushed to the breaking point by their infant’s persistent cries. Coming to the rescue, however, Dr. Karp places in the hands of parents, grandparents, and all childcare givers the tools they need to be able to calm their babies almost as easily as…turning off a light.

I'm afraid of what life would be like without this book! My nephew was quiet at first but then woke up after a week or two and became very fussy. It's AMAZING how the techniques in the book calm him so quickly, it's like he's in a trance. You never expect to have a fussy baby but many parents do and this book will give you some great tips on how to make your baby feel safe & happy. Every new parent should read this book (Preferably before the baby is born b/c there won't be much time for reading after, especially if baby becomes fussy. You'll want to be prepared ahead of time)!

4 out of 5 stars Best Reads on Birthing Mechanics.......2007-10-11

This book has the best chapters on Sexuality and Pregnancy as well as the mechanics of birthing that I've read -- and I've been through quite a few books recently. I would highly recommend it to any reader interested in a sound knowledge of the "how-to" of birth.

4 out of 5 stars Some outdated views, but still worth it for the techniques.......2007-09-20

Ok, so I went in reading this with a grain of salt (as was advised) and I see why. The statistics are outdated and there is one part about a baby's possible future resentment toward a mom who chose a C-section...um...yeah. That had me laughing outloud and then I knew I must read the book solely for the techniques.

I have to say, at 38 weeks pregnant, and having extremely painful Braxton Hicks contractions, the relaxation techniques and exercises you can do with a partner or husband, have been a huge help! I love that they do a lot of coaching the coach, too. Right now, my husband basically reads the instructions in a soft voice and it's so comforting through some really painful times.

I love that they touch on the EMOTIONAL progress of the stages of labor, as well, so that that you can get control and will be able to know where you are in the different stages of labor.... So as to avoid getting to the hospital too soon or too late. It is really encouraging about listening to your own body and not going totally on emotions, too.

I just caution you, it's biased against hospitals as well as toward epidurals at all. There are a lot of happy and healthy babies out there delivered by a mom who had an epidural, so it's a mystery why this is the ONLY way to do it right. You must just go into birthing with confidence that you can do this naturally, but knowing there are things that come up and to make sure you keep asking questions. No woman is a failure when it comes to delivering a baby. I just don't buy in to doing it one way. Things happen. Sometimes C-sections save lives. Just be informed, you know?

5 out of 5 stars Best book for preparing on a natural childbirth.......2007-09-06

I loved this book the BEST book to prepare for a natural childbirth. Some things you might want to read quick and not to seriously, just use your own common sense and take the best things out of this book. and ... I had a natural childbirth!

5 out of 5 stars Get Informed.......2007-08-24

You owe it to yourself and your baby. How you bring your baby into the world will affect your child for the rest of his or her life. This book is an education on natural birthing and the Bradley Method. It explains all the changes (mental, physical, hormonal, etc) that a pregnant woman goes through, what she needs in labor and how the coach (usually husband) can help.

After reading the book and taking additional Bradley Childbirth Classes, the mystery of birth and fear of the unknown has lifted. I feel totally prepared and ready to welcome our little one.

5 out of 5 stars Loved this book!.......2007-07-29

I read quite a few books during my pregnancy and found that this one, more than any other, helped to truly ease my fears about the pain of labor. I was actually still reading it when I went into labor and found it to be an empowering, informative and comforting resource. I was able to delivery my son without pain medications and felt at ease (without fear) throughout the entire labor and delivery process. I truly believe it contributed greatly to the wonderful birth experience we had.

5 out of 5 stars Best Potty Training Book Out There.......2007-05-21

Elizabeth Pantley's No Cry Potty Training Solution is one amazing book. She knows exactly what a parent needs to succeed in teaching their toddler to use the potty. I have twin boys and I never thought I would be able to get them to stop peeing on the floor and into a potty. Elizabeth's book helped me do that. The one thing that I like best about the book is that Elizabeth has real families telling their potty problems. Wow!!! I'm not alone, real people, real problems but with Elizabeth's help, a real solution. That is what I love about the No Cry Potty Training Solution. It is easy to follow and the quick reference guides are wonderful. Most importantly, Elizabeth eloquently describes that you don't have to follow a set standard on how or when you should potty train. She simply states that it is ok to follow your child's cues and do what works best for you and your family. Only you know your child best. I however, think that Elizabeth knows every child best. I recommend that if you are even thinking about potty training...look no further, run out and get this book right away. I promise you won't be able to put it down.

4 out of 5 stars Okay book, if you do not have an extremely stubborn child.......2007-05-09

I really liked the take of this book....be calm, let the child lead, be calm, the child will not be ready until he/she is ready, be calm. Did I mention that a ton of this book is based on you? Like I said I did like the book, it was easy to read and made sense...EXCEPT if you have a totally stubborn child who absolutely refuses to go on the potty. There is no practicals on how to deal with problems like this. What do you do when your child is ready, but can not be bothered to stop playing? I think the book can be improved greatly by some practical answers other than maybe your child is not ready.

5 out of 5 stars Another good book in the series.......2007-03-16

This book is very user friendly. Although many of the ideas I knew about I found Pantley's methods and explanations bring those into a new light. Using the new and the old techniques, my daughter almost trained herself by 32mo including night time. She has only had a hand full of accidents since she announced she would no longer wear diapers and she is now well over 3. There were definitely no tears shed for this adventure! I am using the same philosophy with my 2 year old niece and she is potty trained at home, only wearing a pull up out of the house and at bed.

5 out of 5 stars A helpful book.......2007-02-09

I was anxious about potty-training my little one. This book helped me feel more prepared before tackling it. I like the quiz that helped you decide if your toddler was showing readiness signs- another way to eliminate the guesswork.
The author takes a low-stress approach and constantly reminds the parent that they set the tone for potty training. It CAN be a fun process for both you and your toddler.
Good information on potty chairs (pros/cons) and different prizes to incorporate in the learning process.

5 out of 5 stars user friendly.......2007-02-01

WOW!! I enjoyed this book. I found this book to be straight forward, easy to follow-- I guess user friendly. Potty training is hard enough. I didn't need something complicated and time consuming to read- which I found with other books. I was able to read this book in segments and initiate plan of action. Thank you for a book that works!!

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars worthless.......2006-11-17

I had great hope -- sleep !!!!!!

But it is just yet another book advocating abuse of the child for the ease of the parent.

Yes, I want sleep. NO I will not sacfice my baby's secure attachment to me, and faith in me and the world to get it.

crying it out is abuse pure and simply.

Don't waest your time and money -- if you think this is how to raise a child, do yourfelf and the child a favor and giv the child to someone who will care.

2 out of 5 stars Could work I suppose.......2006-02-25

This book is easy to read & sympathetic but it didn't work for me. Staying with my baby while he was supposed to self-soothe (as recommended) did not help him or reassure him in any way. He cried continually, stopping for no more than 2 mins at a time. It worked better for me to leave him, returning every 10 - 15 mins for very brief periods of reassurance. He still cried but less & less each day. I think there are babies for whom the stay-with-them style could work, but not all, and alas, not mine.

1 out of 5 stars Another cry it out to sleep book.......2005-09-08

I thought I'd find more logical techniques for sleep from Dr Brazelton since I enjoy all his other books, but this book just follows the old-school cry it out method. I did find many non-crying solutions in a newer book called the No Cry Sleep Solution.

5 out of 5 stars All I needed to know.......2004-12-02

This is a great little book - short, easy to use, not overwhelming. Yet I've found all the answers to my questions in it, simply and clearly explained. I especially like the section with all the suggestions on how to handle problems. I'm done with struggling over bedtime with my 3 year old. This book has shown me what to do and given me the confidence to do it.

5 out of 5 stars This is the one.......2004-03-16

There are so many books out there now for parents, especially about sleep. I never would have known which one to pick -who has time for more than one?- if one of my co-workers hadn't told me to check out the Brazelton Way. Well, she was right. This book is only about a hundred pages long, it fits in your pocket, and it's written so clearly you can zip right through it. I love my kids, but I'd rather be with them than spending a lot of time reading about them. I know many parents who feel the same way, especially single parents like me. It's tough raising a child alone, especially for a guy, because everyone is second guessing you and making you feel like you're never going to figure out how to take care of a kid. These little books, though, have really made me feel like I know what I'm doing. I love the way they steer me back to trusting my own gut, and at the same time give me so much useful advice. I bought this sleep book because my four-year-old was waking up with nightmares every night. He was so scared of having another one that he started refusing to go to bed. I couldn't deal with that because I have to get my sleep too. But this book gave me a few simple tips and all I had to do was try them out a few times and my little boy settled down - no more nightmares.

This books is definitely the one. I highly recommend it to any parent who wants to be sure they're doing everything they can do to raise happy, healthy kids.

How we raise our children differs greatly from society to society, with many cultures responding differently to such questions as how a parent should respond to a crying child, how often a baby should be nursed, and at what age a child should learn to sleep alone. Ethnopediatrics--the study of parents, children, and child rearing across cultures--is the subject of anthropologist Meredith F. Small's thorough and fascinating book Our Babies, Ourselves.

Small asserts that our ideas about how to raise our kids are as much a result of our culture as our biology, and that, in fact, many of the values we place on child-rearing practices are based in culture rather than biology. Small writes, "Every act by parents, every goal that molds that act, has a foundation in what is appropriate for that particular culture. In this sense, no parenting style is 'right' and no style is 'wrong.' It is appropriate or inappropriate only according to the culture." Our Babies, Ourselves is a wonderful read for anyone interested in the social sciences, and will be especially meaningful to those swept up in the wild adventure of parenting. --Ericka Lutz

Book Description

New parents are faced with innumerable decisions to make regarding the best way to care for their baby, and, naturally, they often turn for guidance to friends and family members who have already raised children. But as scientists are discovering, much of the trusted advice that has been passed down through generations needs to be carefully reexamined.

A thought-provoking combination of practical parenting information and scientific analysis, Our Babies, Ourselves is the first book to explore why we raise our children the way we do--and to suggest that we reconsider our culture's traditional views on parenting.

In this ground-breaking book, anthropologist Meredith Small reveals her remarkable findings in the new science of ethnopediatrics. Professor Small joins pediatricians, child-development researchers, and anthropologists across the country who are studying to what extent the way we parent our infants is based on biological needs and to what extent it is based on culture--and how sometimes what is culturally dictated may not be what's best for babies.

Should an infant be encouraged to sleep alone? Is breast-feeding better than bottle-feeding, or is that just a myth of the nineties? How much time should pass before a mother picks up her crying infant? And how important is it really to a baby's development to talk and sing to him or her?

These are but a few of the important questions Small addresses, and the answers not only are surprising but may even change the way we raise our children.

this was another gift for my daughter she enjoys readin she liked this one also

4 out of 5 stars Interesting look at cross cultural care of infants.......2007-07-01

This book gave an anthropological, evolutionary, perspective on infant care. I thought the most valuable insight this book gave was identifying the Western culture's focus on independence and how common parenting practices subconciously and consciously focus on independence. It gave me some perspective on why I was doing what I was doing.

You can tell she is a proponent of cosleeping, babywearing, and breastfeeding. So she emphasizes the positive health advantages of doing these things and how doing these things are more in line with meeting the biological/evolutionary needs of a baby, but she does continue that not doing these things, or doing these things on various continuums, do become cultural norms in order for parents to get the things done that they need to do. And that other cultures, (besides Western culture) do wean their babies, or allow other people to carry their babies, or have the baby sleep in their own bed, but in the same room. She notes that the Western culture is extreme in not doing these things, which is fine, but because it goes against a babies evolutionary/biological needs the trade off is generally a baby who cries more.

I liked the fact that this wasn't a how to book. I liked it because it described how some primitive cultures care for their baby, and I liked the fact that primitive cultures had behaviors that I felt weren't perfect. I liked it because it allows you to think about various parenting choices and analyze the motivations of your choices and whether or not you are willing to accept the possible consequences.

1 out of 5 stars Pseudo-science in support of Attachment Parenting.......2007-05-02

I've been struggling for over a month to finish this book to give it a fair review, but I have finally thrown in the towel. I haven't been this angry reading a book since Camile Paglia, and I like Paglia. Small has twisted science to her own ends and interpretations in full support of the Attachment Parenting style advocated by Dr. William Sears and the La Leche League with no respect for the rigor or detail of the science she claims to promote.

Our Babies, Ourselves, besides being a cheap title rip-off of the famous women's health book, Our Bodies, Ourselves, claims to be a layman's introduction to the science of ethnopediatrics, a cross-disciplinary study of child rearing practices around the world by cultural anthropology, child development, and pediatrics. Several famous ethnographies and development studies are citied and as a former student of cultural anthropology and a new parent I was already familiar with many of them.

But Small's bias against all things western is hinted at from the very beginning; every time she discusses western baby handling, she mentions that babies are put in "hard plastic seats." The word "hard" is, without a doubt, a value judgement, not a description, and does not follow the carefully objective tone of the ethnographic studies. The careful reader can begin to see where facts end and Small's opinions come to the fore by paying attention to the footnotes: where the text is supported by science there are copious footnotes and where opinion dominates the footnotes suddenly dry up.

Small's opinions can be summed up here: "...parents are opting for a more independent relationship from their babies. They choose to place babies in cribs ad car seats rather than carry them all the time, to feed babies in intervals rather than continuously, and to respond less quickly to infant distress. Although this style provides parents with some freedom from demands of the infant, it also comes with a cost-a crying baby who is not biologically adapted to the cultural change." There is no supporting footnote to this statement.

The entire philosophy of Attachment Parenting is very attractive to western parents who feel disassociated from their children or who have completely bought into the cult of childhood that idealizes all aspects of the child's development. But to my mind it comes with two very high price tags. The first is a complete detachment from the culture in which we live. It is not practical to expect someone to grow up in western culture not able to sleep on their own in their own bed. The second price is a lack of respect for both our babies and ourselves, not allowing a child joy of discovering the world for themselves or giving parents the room required in our culture to be separate from their children.

Small does not attempt to look for solutions that will fit in to our culture, choices that can be more beneficial for babies but will help them to grow into a western, industrialized world. She idealizes and glorifies the non-industrial child rearing and believe that we should adopt it wholesale.

Since I am familiar with the ethnographies presented, I know that only the !Kung San of the groups presented actually have sexual equality and that they culturally reinforce early independence in their children in a socially supported environment. I know that the Guisii are extremely misogynistic with a heavy level of both mental and physical abuses and their women and girls have a low sense of self worth. Small does not show these more complex parts of the cultures, only the infant carrying and nursing that she wants to emphasize. And she completely downplays the weaning by coating nipples in bitter herbs, as if there is no disrespect in suddenly taking away something that was constantly given as a source of comfort when their mothers were too busy to tend them. Small does not emphasize that aborigine mothers never look their babies in the eye while nursing which would give the babies too high a sense of self worth.

I am now very interested in the research of ethnopediatrics and curious to see more scientific writing on the subject, to study it in an objective manner. Our Babies, Ourselves, unfortunately, is neither good science nor good parenting, a flimsy pseudo-scientific shell in support of the fashion for Attachment Parenting.

5 out of 5 stars Read this before your baby is born.......2007-03-07

This book is excellent. It actually gives evidence and cites facts about babies. This is not a how to book, but shows you that as a parent you can choose between many parenting styles. As soon as my wife and I read that in Japan (where babies co-sleep) the SIDS rate is much lower than in the US (where on average babies sleep alone at three months) we knew we would let our daughter sleep with us in the bed. This books gives good insight in why we do things the way we do with raising babies. And then you realize that a lot of the things we do go straight against what babies need. I recommend this book highly and look forward to reading more by this author.

5 out of 5 stars Factual support for trusting your parenting instincts.......2006-09-01

I was enthralled by the information about this book, and quickly went on to read its successor, Kids. I thrive on historical and scientific fact, and this book left me with a deeper understanding of child-rearing practices from the author-anthropologist's view. As a breastfeeding mom and advocate of attachment parenting, I reference information from it a lot when people challenge issues such as nursing toddlers, feeding on cue and babywearing.

4 out of 5 stars When I Feel Angry.......2007-09-11

This is a great book to help children understand anger; this book offers positive alternatives to hitting and other unacceptable behaviors in response to anger.

5 out of 5 stars A simple yet powerful book.......2007-01-09

I purchased this book for my 4 year old son. I found it to be very well written and illustrated. As a School Psychologist myself, it's not always so easy to come up with the words when it involves your own child. However, I've seen a lot of books and this one just seems to work and the phrases and remarks seem to "stick" with my little guy. It's well priced through Amazon too because I first saw it in one of my professional catalogues and it was priced substantially higher. I think many children will be able to relate to the characters and feelings expressed in this book and it is so very important to help your children manage their feelings . . .

5 out of 5 stars good .......2006-08-29

good book shows what to do when angry and what not to do. and gives ideas on what to do when angry..

4 out of 5 stars excellent message!.......2006-06-19

This book discusses anger, its causes, how it feels, and most importantly, healthy options for dealing with it. Anger can be overwhelming and frightening for anyone, and even more so for young ones will little experience regulating their emotions.
This book is empathetic "When I feel angry I want to say something mean, or yell or hit. But feeling like I want to is not the same as doing it." One of my favorite elements of this book is that it gives many options for dealing with anger, from
counting to bike riding to walking away, and from being assertive to taking a nap, and from handling the problem independently to asking for help.
I work in a classroom full of 3, 4 and 5 year olds, and kids sometimes call each other names, often grab things from one another and often would rather keep playing when the "clean-up" signal is given. This book is relevant to preschoolers.
The last sentence I wish was a mantra for us all. "When I feel anrgry, I know what to do!"

2 out of 5 stars Too abstract.......2005-12-16

First, I have to confess that I had different expectations about this book (I thought it may be about other feelings too, but it's only about anger). The examples seemed poorly chosen for my 3-year old, who, for instance, does not really know what it means for somebody to make fun of him or why the teacher may unfairly berate him for talking in class. The idea of teaching kids that sometimes we cannot control the situation that angers us is good, but again, the example (I think one in which a favorite team loses a game) wasn't great. In general, the text was abstract and the illustration carried the burden of exemplifying what the text described...

May be more appropriate for an older child.

Book Description

Originally published in 1951, this vintage Little Golden Book tells the touching story of Great-Grandpa Bunny Bunny, who teaches each new generation of bunnies how to prepare for the coming spring. Featuring classic Disney illustrations and sweet, simple text, this title will delight new and old Disney fans alike!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars So many wonderful things about this book!.......2007-06-06

The illustrations are enchanting. The story tells of Grandpa Bunny who loves to tell stories to the children in the evening. Grandpa also teaches the bunnies about the value of hard work and is always looking for new ways to make the forest more beautiful...he teaches them to paint the autumn leaves and the spring flowers.

But the thing that really stands out is that the story helps to explain Death to children in a very lovely way. As long as you belong to a Faith that believes in an Afterlife, this book will help you explain to children that we never really die--part of us goes on.

I had this book when I was a child. After Grandpa Bunny dies, the little bunnies are not so sad because they see his work each evening--Grandpa Bunny paints the sunsets. Every time I see a sunset, I think of Grandpa Bunny and of my loved ones that are no longer here. Grandpa Bunny gets a lot of help with those sunsets. ;)

5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have little book.......2007-03-28

This little book is a classic: poignant, touching and beautiful. A memorable story that teaches respect and love for elders, that will grab little ones' attention and have you re-reading it for yourself. My kids grew up on it and I bought a new copy for the grandkids; I was so glad to find it still in print.

4 out of 5 stars Every Baby's House Should Have It.......2004-04-19

Once again, T. Berry Brazelton hits a home run. Calming Your Fussy Baby outlines the steps every parent should take to determine the source of a baby's fussing and soothe the fuss away. Advice is laid out by age so that parents can go directly to the portion of the book applicable to their baby and specific information is presented for various types of crying and how to identify what kind of cry one is hearing. The advice is to the point and clear and is written in such a way as to assure parents that they are doing just fine.

One of Brazelton's charms is that he echoes Dr. Spock's famous statement "You know more than you think you do" for a new generation. Dr. Brazelton firmly believes that every parent can be a good parent and that the roots of good parenting are within everyone who wishes to tap them. This book, part of the Brazelton Way series, is a good one to have on hand for the inevitable day when a baby just won't be calmed. With this ammunition, any parent should consider him- or herself well armed against the fussies.

5 out of 5 stars a book to steady yourself with.......2004-03-16

Calming Your fussy Baby the Brazelton Way has been the most important book I've read as a parent. Every time my baby cried I felt as if I failed, as if I let her down, hopeless. I felt like crying myself. This book helped me to understand these feelings in myself, to get past them so that I could understand my baby's cries, and figure out what she was trying to tell me. There is lots of information in here about what a baby's cries mean, how to tell, and what to do. But without telling me what to do and making me feel even more like a failure it helped me take a look at myself - I had to face the fact that I was suffering from post partum depression: no one else had noticed. There is something so soothing and calming about the way this book is written that it gave me the courage to face myself, and helped me to get help and get ready to calm my fussy baby.

5 out of 5 stars A blessing.......2004-02-13

Dear Dr. Brazelton,
Thank you for this lovely book. there is so much information in it and it has really helped me to feel that I understand my baby, and that I knwow what to do. thank you!

2 out of 5 stars Not helpful.......2003-03-27

As a parent of a colicy/active baby, I've went through several different books, looking for help. This book was not helpful. It was basically nothing more than you'd find in a magazine article. It doesn't have any real solutions. Instead I'd HIGHLY recommend "the Happiest Baby on the block" especially the DVD version. This was unbelievably helpful to me and I just wish I had found it sooner.

4 out of 5 stars baby's still fussy...........2003-03-09

I really like Dr. Brazelton's approach -- warm and loving but firm and respectful of sleep-deprived parents (thank you!) However, he makes it seem too easy, like "follow steps 1-4 and your baby will be calm." If only it were that simple. I wish he had taken things one step further, i.e., what to do when all his suggestions fail and the baby is still crying. I think in his effort to make this book short and practical, he overlooked how complex this process can be for parents with more difficult babies and/or whose confidence withers with baby's every crying jag.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it so much I used it twice.......2006-09-25

I used these calendars for two different pregnancies and really enjoyed it. The weekly information is interesting and helpful, the stickers are great and the baby name suggestions are wonderful too. They really crammed alot of useful stuff into this calendar, plus really cute pictures of babies. The only drawback is writing in all of the dates and days of the week, but you'll have that flaw with any pregnancy calendar.

3 out of 5 stars Nice, but needs improvement.......2006-01-30

The calendar does have nice pictures and I like the tips and the names at the bottom. However, even though it is done week by week there is little room to write anything down. They have this huge quote that takes up 1/4 of the page. I think they could of reduced this and made the writing area larger.

5 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for..........2004-11-29

I seemed to have a harder time this pregnancy (my third) finding a "pregnancy calender". I was really excited to find this one. The pictures are very sweet and there was room to write in my thoughts, etc... It's a good buy if your into keepsakes and scrapping.

5 out of 5 stars Horray, this is exactly what I wanted!.......2004-07-01

I just recieved this Calendar in the mail today and I love it! It has a page for each week with tips for each day of that week. The pictures are adorable too. I love that it has spots for pictures too. It also has suggested baby names A-Z on the bottom of each page. It's definitely worth the money. I just wish I got it sooner!

5 out of 5 stars Hooray - Finally a Gift that Mommy can treasure for years!!!.......2002-12-24

The "Hooray! My Baby Is on the Way Calendar" was a wonderful way for me as a first time mom to become attuned to what was going on with my baby week by week. The calendar also displays adoreable pictures of babies for you to ahhhh over in anticipation of your new arrival. The stickers (first ultrasound, picked babies name, first heartbeat heard, wore maternity clothes, and etc.) are a nice way to reflect on the memories of pregnancy. The calendar also displays helpful hints that guide you on what can be expected. These hints also can be dropped to signifant others as a suttle way of saying "I need a back rub!" The calendar is a great gift to yourself or to those that are expecting around you!!!
