Book Description
Using this science-based plan, dieters will learn how to eat in order to boost serotonin, the brain chemical that shuts off appetite and turns on feelings of calm. This clinically tested program is also the first to offer antidepressant users an effective way to lose extra weight associated with their medication.
The Serotonin Weight Loss Plan is based on more than 30 years of pioneering research at MIT by internationally renowned scientist Dr. Judith Wurtman on the brain, emotions, appetite, and overeating. Using this research, she and Dr. Nina Marquis devised a program that puts the brain in charge of food intake. This simple 12-week plan, with more than 75 delicious recipes, was successfully tested on hundreds of clients at the Adara weight loss centers founded by the authors. Readers will lose up to 2 pounds a week—while reducing stress and improving their moods.
Because the plan is designed to turn on serotonin and turn off the need to eat, readers will never feel deprived. In addition, as serotonin increases feelings of well-being, emotional eating will vanish.

It works!.......2007-09-20
This is fabulous. I find myself feeling much healthier by following the simple steps and regulated snacking. It really shocked me the difference this diet (now a lifestyle) made in my life. I feel better, my body functions better and in conjunction with yoga, the overall quality of my life has improved.
question - help....???.......2007-09-03
I do not understand...I thought when you go on an anti-depressant it was suppose to help balance your unbalanced hormones and chemicals? I thought it was suppose to give us more serotonin, not less?? I was first put on an antidepressant when a doctor told me it would help give me energy (I was not depressed, I had a long battle with mono and still had fevers and fatigue). I gained about 60 pounds, did not get any energy, felt "odd", not quite myself. It was not fun. Eventually went off the pills for a few years. Then started having anxiety and not feeling very good (blood work showed my hormones were really unbalanced, had me in "post-menopausal" in some areas, even though I was only 30 yrs. old and still menstruating, but just my hormones in general seemed all out of whack),so I was put back on another antidepressant. I thought these meds were suppose to help us feel better, more calm, less stressed, sleep better, put us in balance, etc. Why do they seem to do little other than cause major weight gain? I am considering buying this book. If you follow the diet, does it help you more than antidepressants? Anyone gone off their antidepressants after following the diet for a while? (I'm not talking about those with bi-polar and major depression for whom the meds have truly helped and been benefical, but for anyone who has had doctors pop them on antidepressants when you weren't really depressed?).
The Serotonin Power Diet.......2007-07-18
We've all done it- eating a whole bag of potato chips or more cookies than we'd like to admit when trying to deal with stress, anxiety, fatigue, or sadness. The thing is that it works. After eating that comfort food, we feel like we can face the world once again. So food becomes a refuge and the scale reflects it.
Then, along comes the Atkins diet. No carbs. Truthfully, how long did it take you to cheat during your first bout of PMS? Even when you were being "good", how bad were the carb cravings?
The Serotonin Power Diet makes carbs permissible once again, in moderation and at the right times. One small carbohydrate filled snack, eaten about an hour before a meal can actually reduce your appetite allowing you to eat appropriate portions of healthy foods without cravings or feeling like you are actually on a diet.
Unlike many diets, I can see The Serotonin Power Diet actually fitting into my everyday lifestyle. Craving carbs during PMS or when I'm tired often derails my nutritional efforts. Having a small snack seems to alleviate that feeling that I've failed in my efforts and relieves my cravings.
The Serotinin Power Diet .......2007-05-21
I found Judith Wurtman's book The Serotinin Power Diet to be the only book that deals with what I consider, really counts: Hunger control.
Through their year's of research at MIT they have learned what triggers binging and hunger and teaches you what to eat, before attending social events etc. It teaches you how to control you appetite so you can go into any situation and control yourself and not overeat. So you loose weight easily.
I don't follow her diet I just follow her concept and principles as to how to feed myself for not being hungry, particularly when I have social events.
Being at home it is easy to follow any plan; it the going out with friends etc that makes it difficult. But that's the key; She has taught me how not to be hungry.
I have lost 15 pounds in a little less than three months and I am on my way to normalize my body weight and speciallly, lower my glucose.
First time something works for me.

Interesting.......2007-05-16
This is a book about how people already on SSRIs can better manage their diet. It is not a book that will give you information about how to avoid using SSRIs by increasing your serotonin levels through diet.
I thought it was the latter, so it didn't really help me. But if you are on sSRI sand want to manage your weight better, it may help.

5-HTP is a naturally derived amino acid that has been shown in comprehensive studies to be safer than prescription drugs for the treatment of insomnia and depression, and can also be used for treating obesity, migraine headaches, fibromyalgia, and premenstrual syndrome. It may prove to be more popular than St. John's wort for the treatment of depression and other serotonin-related conditions, as it's been shown to produce results in as little as two weeks, while the herb may take a month or longer.
Author Michael Murray, N.D., a leading naturopath and coauthor of The Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine, delves very deeply to explain the hows and whys of depression at the neurotransmitter level, and the illustrations of presynaptic membranes may be a bit much for the lay reader. There are also several sections with intimidating titles along the lines of "Enhancing 5-HTP with Catecholamine Precursors." But the book's comprehensiveness makes up for its occasional denseness. Murray includes enlightening sections on nutrition for peak serotonin synthesis, other complementary herbal supplements, and many online and physical sources for obtaining 5-HTP. --Erica Jorgensen
Book Description
This is the first comprehensive guide to 5-HTP--an amino acid extracted from the seeds of the Griffonia plant--which is available without prescription and has been shown to be safer and more effective than prescription drugs in treating conditions associated with low levels of serotonin.
Our stressful modern lifestyles wreak havoc on our health--we're waging a constant battle to overcome the ill effects of poor diet, lack of exercise, and not enough rest. It may surprise you to learn that scientists have discovered that our stressful lifestyles not only affect our bodies but they adversely affect our brains, too. Specifically, stress, poor diet, and insufficient exercise cause our brains to produce low levels of serotonin, the neurotransmitter that regulates our mood, appetite, and ability to get a good night's sleep. When our brains aren't producing enough serotonin, we may experience depression, suffer from obesity or insomnia, or otherwise function at less than our mental and physical peak.
How do our brains produce serotonin? By synthesizing the essential amino acids we gain from eating a proper diet. But diet alone isn't enough (or millions and millions of us wouldn't suffer the ill effects of low serotonin levels), and scientists and researchers have finally come up with a groundbreaking supplement that will safely and efficiently boost serotonin levels and reduce depression, obesity, insomnia, migraine headaches, and anxiety. That supplement is 5-HTP.
Written by one of the leading naturopathic doctors in the U.S., 5-HTP tells you everything you need to know about this amazing supplement. Citing case histories, scientific studies, and all the available literature on the subject, Dr. Murray introduces us to a supplement that has been widely and effectively used throughout Europe for decades.

AMAZING BOOK.......2007-10-02
This book is so informative. Many people are on prozac and could do this without all the side effects. It truly works!! It is a secret because it is inexpensive and not able to be patented.
MEDECINE IS FINALLY GETTING INTELLIGENT.......2007-07-30
A truly enlightening approach to human well being based on considering the true complexity of the human organism, explaining scientific issues to the level of the non specialist. THe intelligent way to deal with health problems, not just take the newest pill the Chemical companies just launched! An absolute must!
A must read.......2007-04-05
This is a very thorough and informative book on 5HTP. There's alot of info I wasn't aware of and because of it, I've begun to lose weight by following the advice in it. I'm surprised it is not touted as THE way to lose weight to give the bogus weight loss "systems" a run for their money. I like the fact that it lists studies, statistics, it's multiple uses and how it works. I didn't know it double dutied as a safe sleeping aid, for example and now use it as well for that purpose. It's too bad it gets swept under the rug for those that want to use a supplement as safe as 5HTP.
Incomplete and full of inconsistencies.......2003-08-28
While this book presents some interesting and possibly even helpful information, Murray destroys his credibility by his glaring contradictions. For example, on page 33 he says, "5-HTP...cannot be metabolized by the liver into kynurenine." Then on page 238 he says, "...if vitamin B6 levels are low, then more 5-HTP will get converted in the liver into another substance, kynurenine."
Another troubling oversight is that Murray's mention of eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome is very brief, and is in reference only to the L-tryptophan scare of 1989. He never mentions that 5-HTP has also been linked with EMS. He also states that the manufacturing process of 5-HTP prevents any possible contamination, which simply isn't true.
I read this book hoping to find reassuring information about the safety of 5-HTP, but in light of Murray's poor research, inconsistencies and inaccuracies, it's hard to trust any of the information presented.
Don't Worry, Be Happy!.......2002-12-12
I have suffered from mild depression for years. The therapy described in the book has worked like a miracle.

No cravings. No stress. No fatigue.
Finally, a diet you can feel good about!
Introducing The Feel-Good Diet, a scientific breakthrough in weight loss that will help you:
- Turn off your hunger

The Feel-Good Diet is a revolutionary weight-loss program that works with you, not against you. This "yo-yo brain" effect zaps your willpower and leaves you irritable, depressed, and carbo-craved.
The Feel-Good Diet helps you battle "yo-yo brain" and finally win your war with your weight. With a few simple guidelines and easy-to-prepare menus, you can eat delicious, healthy foods that actually boost your serotonin levels--so you can lose weight, end cravings, reduce stress . . . and feel good.

Feel Good.......2007-07-29
The authors take the yo-yo weight loss and weight gain syndrome out of the equation with a comprehensive look at hormone related stress factors and weight gain on the reader's body. With detailed explanation on why this occurs and how to prevent weight gain from repeating by balancing out your diet with proper foods.
The Feel Good Diet teaches the reader how to improve eating habits for a healthier, well balance eating lifestyle.
This time it was my husbands turn to lose weight...........2007-05-29
Everyone knows I am the biggest fan of Cheryle R. Hart and Mary Kay Grossman for writing The Insulin-Resistance Diet book which forever changed my life.
After losing 40+ pounds on my own and still having high cholesterol and still being 60 pounds overweight (not to mention feeling terrible) I needed answers. My OB/GYN found the problem and suggested The Insulin-Resistance Diet book by Hart and Grossman. I am now a total of 100 pounds lighter (50+ pounds thanks to the Insulin Resistance Diet), my cholesterol is normal and my Insulin levels are normal. I have kept the weight off for 2 years and couldn't love my life more.
My husband on the other hand had a much harder time over the Holidays and I decided The Feel Good Diet was what he needed to take off the weight. The two of us loved the book because it spoke to us from different angles. My husband is very analytical and likes to know how the clock works, I on the other hand, just want to know what time it is. The Feel Good Diet works because it gives you the "why" and "how" all in one book.
The biggest change for me was the quality of sleep I now enjoy after having my Evening Seretonin-Boosting Snack. The S'More Serotonin Snack is to die for or an evening watching a movie while snacking on popcorn made my husband very happy. The other significant change was our energy levels in the afternoon by incorporating the afternoon snack.
Cheryle Hart and Mary Kay Grossman not only wrote books which allowed me to lose weight and changed my life but they educated me about my body and empowered me to be able to keep the weight off. To be able to live a life where you control your weight instead of the food controlling your weight is AMAZING!!!!
Bottom Line, Does it Work? Yes it Does.......2007-04-28
People who have dieted as long as I have know about dieting. We've read the new books, tried new ways of dealing with our persistent problem.
Normal weight people must find this confusing if they think at all about our dilemma. Why can't we just -get- the basic principle that you eat less than you expend to lose weight. Simple. Unfortunately, not that simple in our nation. Not that simple for bodies out of whack.
It is mysterious to me how people can just eat to live and not think about it 24/7. How freeing it must be to spend no time planning meals, logging calories in and out, making weight goals, etc.etc. I may never reach that level of normalacy but the principles in this book and it's predecessor The Insulin Resistance DietThe Insulin-Resistance Diet : How to Turn Off Your Body's Fat-Making Machine, help me see what is possible.
As a dieter I want to know one thing before I put money out on a new diet book. Does it help, does it work? Is this book going to give me some vital piece of information that will help me change my life? The answer to those questions is yes, this book does help, work and give vital information. The authors encourage you to change by slowly changing one new behavior at a time until you've changed your habits even if this process takes months. We want what we want when we want it which is usually now, but that is a formula for failure in any major life change.
I didn't expect this book to be significantly different from Dr. Hart and Ms Grossman's first book, The Insulin Resistance Diet but it is. If possible, I really recommend buying both books and reading the Insulin Resistance Diet first. Although the Feel Good Diet continues and expounds upon the material in the Insulin Resistance Diet, both books stand on their own. The Feel Good Diet is better understood if you read the Insulin Resistance Diet first. If you don't want to buy the Insulin Resistance Diet, go to your public library. The IR Diet is the philosophical underpinning for the Feel Good Diet. When you eat the Insulin Resistance way, there is a calm that settles over you which makes your life and the changes you'll be making so much easier.
I also suggest reading this book completely through before trying ANY of the suggestions. Don't go off half cocked, as I did. The apple cider vinegar Vinegar, Apple Cider, Unfiltered, Raw, Organic, 32 oz.works and works well. In my opinion, it doesn't taste bad either. You might add low glycemic agave nectarAgave Nectar Liquid Sweetener, Light, Squeeze Bottle, Organic, 8 oz., to sweeten rather than other, especially artificial, sweeteners. I don't use a sweetener. It's helpful to increase your intake of minerals before you start on the vinegar. The book lists natural sources of minerals. It is also good to increase the supplements you take as suggested in the book before you start taking the 5HTP.
The book talks about sublingual 5HTP in the form of craniyums. I have benefited from 5HTPSecrets of 5-HTP: Nature's Newest Super Supplement, it gives me time to make better food choices and drastically lowers my chocolate cravings. Although I do have some stomach upset when taking regular 5HTP I am still in the early stages of deciding whether craniyums are a better source of 5HTP. Not everyone has stomach problems with 5HTP. Most of the serotonin receptors in the body are in the gut area, the second brain, as Dr. OZ says.
This book has simple menus which help you reorganize your eating, it deals with acid, alkaline issues which are very important for overall health and it deals in detail with why we need increased serotonin and dopamine precursors to be successful at dieting. All of this is sanely given with an understanding that major changes do not happen overnight.
I found out that I suffer with Seasonal Affective Disorder about 10 years agoWinter Blues, Revised Edition: Everything You Need to Know to Beat Seasonal Affective Disorder. I know what low serotoin feels like but didn't connect it with insulin resistance until I read The Insulin Resistance Diet about a year ago. Most of the weight I've gained has happened in the winter of each year when my serotonin is extremely low. If you gain 10 lbs a year over a period of many years, you end up with a weight problem. If you use food to supply the brain chemicals you need to feel good, you end up with a weight problem. And weight problems eventually lead up to many, many other physical, mental, emotional and relational problems, as we all know.
So bottom line, yes I do recommend this book.

The Feel Good Diet by Hart MD and Grossman RD

Overall, the book is well-researched. The findings make sense. There are good references cited from authoritative journals; namely,

In the authors' next book, I would include some citations from The Lancet.
The book claims to assist in crafting a personal diet regimen that boosts serotonin, improves mood and maintains the weight loss into the future. Serotonin improves well being, controls cravings and contributes materially to the sense of well being.
The authors describe how serotonin is made via minerals and cofactor vitamins. Certain habits and foods contribute toward a neurotransmitter deficiency by the authors. These aspects include smoking, drinking, sugar, starch, chocolate, tobacco and carbs by late afternoon or evening. The thyroid and testosterone are the hormones of the metabolism. Testosterone can be measured via saliva or blood testing. DHEA or medications can be taken orally to increase the production of testosterone according to the authors. Calcium in the carbonate form is the preferred vitamin for weight loss together with stress control.
Plain or low fat yogurt has the highest calcium (Ca.) content according to
the authors. The low insulin spike foods are meats (low fat) , fish, poultry, eggs, low fat/sugar dairy, legumes, dried beans, nuts and seeds. There is an extensive section on sample foods. Omega 3 and 6 are the preferred "good fats". Super pH water is known to boost metabolism. More sample recipes are listed in Chapter 14.
After having had numerous medical encounters, I consolidated the advice of several physicians and my personal experience into a food/lifestyle profile which has helped me. This includes the following:
o frequent exercise (cardio and cycling)
o control over late day eating or eating after 8 PM
o bottled water, tea, caffeine-free coffee, occasional diet soda, low alcohol content white or red wine AS GOOD SUBSTITUTES for canned soda,
coffee with caffeine, higher content alcohol (> 10%)
o plantains, nuts and seeds as a substitute for potato chips and pop corn
o low triglyceride restaurant foods
o control over gluten consumption
o less protein to control proteinuria and protect the kidneys
o sugar free candies as a substitute for candy bars of all kinds and snack cravings
This regimen (by my own personal experience ) will take off 20-30 pounds permanently and improve blood chemistry in the area of glucose control, the SED RATE, the triglyceride totals and several other blood factors. It will help with the micro-crystalline measurements done by the Endocrinologist for pre-diabetic states. Long term application may help with the more chronic forms of progressive diabetes , pancreatic damage and
chronic diverticulitis which impacts everyone incrementally after age 40.
The book is recommended highly for anyone beginning the process of life-long weight management and/or more healthful eating. The acquisition is priced reasonably.
Lose your weight, not your mind.......2007-02-01
Cheryle Hart, M.D. writes a very compelling book. The part that really speaks to me is the part about how while on Atkins I may have lost weight, but I also felt a little off, even a little depressed. Now I know that because I did not have enough Carbs, I lost serotonin, and like she said I lost my mind. While the book seems to be aimed towards women, it has been very helpful to me, too. Now I have two ways to increase my serotonin. One way is to eat my serotonin raising snacks and if that is not enought, I can get neurotransmitter precursors like 5-HTP and tyrosine. Thank you Dr. Hart.

For those who eat mostly processed and fast foods.......2005-10-08
I was disappointed in this book, hoping for something to help my wife who is on Prozac for waking her brain up as she is recovering from a major hemmorhaggic stroke. This book is good for people who don't realize how profoundly their diet effects all aspects of their health. But there are no "secrets" revealed, and no magic relief for my wife.
One of the Best Books of Its Kind.......2000-04-28
The scientific explanations are crystal clear, the advice thoughtful and lucid, and the writing exemplary. This is an excellent book about the mysterious chemistry of the brain and how naturally to enhance your levels of serotonin.
Praise from "The Care and Feeding of Your Brain" Author.......1999-07-17
Congrats on a good review of this neurotransmitter that is so key in so much of how we behave, and which can be influenced by so many things around us. Nice focus. Recommend "The Care and Feeding of Your Brain" for a general view of all things that affect the brain and behavior...Kenneth Giuffre MD
A lifesaver for me!.......1999-03-21
I had suffered from depression for more than 25 years, off and on, and finally I was put on anti-depressants. I hated the side effects and eventually had to quit the meds. I came across this book, just a small mass produced paperback book and the information, although simple has changed my life. I no longer have mood swings, dark brooding periods or headaches. The author takes a lot of time to explain the physiology behind it all. If the science is too much for the reader than he/she can just get to the nitty gritty of it all. The method she proposes is simple for anyone to follow. My husband was very skeptical about a book changing one's life but I had no choice but to give a chance. I'm forever grateful to the author for writing this book. My family has a wife and mother now who isn't a Jekyll and Hyde show.

getting your feet wet.......2003-11-12
For those who do not know much about serotonin this is a great book. My biggest problem with it is that it sites its sources too frequently which makes for long unclear runon sentencens much like the one you are reading right now.
Other than that, this book is great. If you change your diet or learn another way to elevate your serotonin levels naturally you may save yourself some of the despair caused by popular SSRIs such as Zoloft or Paxil. Search the web for feedback on either drug and you will see what I mean.
How much is your sanity worth? $4 - probably a little more!
Nice Start..........2002-08-03
This book is a nice start towards learning more about the benefits (or lack thereof) of serotonin. It is now a bit dated though, and could definitely use an update.
Unfortunately, the book really raises as many questions as it provides answers about the topic. The research available at the time seems inconclusive at best. The author seems to try to "hype" serotonin-producing supplements (like 5-HTP) in the beginning, but in the end one reaches the conclusion that this stuff is too dangerous to be messed with, unless taken under a Doctor's supervision. The side-effects for some include serious heart problems, or even death.
It is certainly not the author's fault that this is a topic which needs MUCH more research done on it, before people start using various serotonin-enhancing supplements. Even the "natural" supplements can be just as dangerous as Prozac, Paxil, MAO's or other anti-depressents, if one is not properly supervised. The author is to be commended for bringing possible dangers to light, despite the tendancy to "hype" in booklets such as these.
It's a quick read, and may be worth the money. Then again, you could probably find just as much useful (and more recent) information about the subject available on the Internet for free.
A good source for alternatives........2000-08-14
Yessss. This book is a concise guide for those of you who are exploring alternatives before you commit to a prescription anti-depressant. Believe me, once you are on them, it is very difficult to convince your doctor to wean you from them so that you can try an alternative, natural supplement. I urge all people to explore SAMe or 5-HTP along with KavaKava before resorting to prescirption medicines if you are suffering from mild, periodic depression. I have found the best deals for my SAMe from a site called iHerb. I take SAMe and their powdered Kava and am feeling much better. I also feel like I have control of my own health.
A brilliant discussion of serotonergic antidepressants.......1998-04-15
This is one of those booklet-type books, from Keats Publishing, which focuses on one factor relating to health. When you get it in the mail, it doesn't look like much, but prepare to be surprised. This author is simply a superb researcher and writer. As the cover notes, Baumel is the author of the book "Dealing With Depression Naturally", which is a stunning compendium. In this short book, Baumel concisely summarizes almost every serotonin-boosting treatment that has been well-researched. He mentions nicotine, alcohol, negative ions--very impressive. I don't know who this guy is, exactly, but he is extremely intelligent and writes with style, in addition to providing a very large amount of information on serotonin in affective disorders, and he does it in a very small amount of space.

Customer Reviews:
Sexual Side Effects.......2007-05-28
I think the previous reviewer must have not read the book. Dr. Appleton does mention many times the sexual side effects of antidepressants.
This is the best book on antidepressants. I gave it as a present to two psychiatrists friends of mine and they were really impressed.
Not very useful.......2005-11-05
One glaring omission is that he fails to mention that SSRIs can cause permanent sexual side effects even after discontinuance. Long overlooked by the medical community. Do google search for details.
TOTALLY TRUSTWORTHY--3RD EDITION COMPLETELY REVISED.......2005-02-11
In these confusing times, with so much conflicting advice, Dr. Appleton's updated book is wonderfully clear and without prejudice.
Dr. Appleton has never taken any money from a drug company and so he is able to write an honest book. He understands what depression is and how it can harm your life and he offers a realistic and TRUSTWORTHY view of the drugs. Anyone considering taking an antidepressant or caring for a depressed friend or relative should consider this book required reading. It's written so clearly, while grounded in careful research, that it is easy to understand and makes the decision to use a drug (or try a different one) simple and less fearful. I have bought many copies for friends who agree. 3rd Edition is completely up-to-date.

Introduction.
"A compelling story about mystery, deception, death, disappointment, vindication, and uncertainty."
The American Psychological Association
"Healy confirms his status as one longtime thorn in the side of big drug companies, recounting how he was initially enthusiastic about SSRIs but eventually grew concerned about their side effects."
Psychology Today
"Physicians should be aware of
Let Them Eat Prozac."
JAMA
"
Let Them Eat Prozac is a double-pronged exploration, first of the SSRI drugs used to treat depression, and second of the drug industry."
Publishers Weekly
"Ultimately, the book is about science, society and the power and misuse of commercial promotion. . . . His investigation is impressive."
Nature
"This very important book will demonstrate beyond your worst dreams that the commercial needs of Big Pharma are the natural-born enemy of independent scientific research."
John Le Carré
"Healy presents technical matters clearly. This book could not be more timely."
Foreword
"
Let Them Eat Prozac is an interesting history. It asks some stimulating and challenging questions, which are still in need of better and more constructive answers."
Journal of the American Academy of Child Adolescent Psychiatry
"In a flood of academic publications and talks, David Healy has issued harsh criticisms of both the pharmaceutical industry in general and the nearly $20-billion-dollar-a-year antidepressant industry in particular."
Boston Globe
"Healy does raise some timely issues."
Psychiatric Services
"Dr. Healy's tenacity in fighting for what he believes in is admirable."
E-Streams
"[Healy is] the leading authority on the history of psychopharmacology."
Times Literary Supplement
An alarming book. . . . The most disturbing part of the story Healy tells is not merely about the risks of SSRIs but about the efforts of the pharmaceutical industry to make sure those risks were not uncovered.
Dissent
"In his timely new book, Healy draws on his extensive experience in antidepressant studies and involvement in legal actions against drug manufacturers. . . . Healy has the advantage of access to internal pharmaceutical industry documents and makes a strong case."
Library Journal
"The author is an excellent historian who offers a gripping interpretation of the role of the pharmaco-industrial complex in the introduction of SSRIs. His recommendation for a funded agency that would carefully evaluate the benefits and harms of marketed drugs is a superb idea and much needed."
Jonathan Cole, Harvard Medical School
"Healy exposes the massive fraud and deception in the production and marketing of antidepressant drugs, the selevtive serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)."
Choice
Prozac. Paxil. Zoloft. Turn on your television and you are likely to see a commercial for one of the many selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) on the market. We hear a lot about them, but do we really understand how these drugs work and what risks are involved for anyone who uses them?
Let Them Eat Prozac explores the history of SSRIsfrom their early development to their latest marketing campaignsand the controversies that surround them. Initially, they seemed like wonder drugs for those with mild to moderate depression. When Prozac was released in the late 1980s, David Healy was among the psychiatrists who prescribed it. But he soon observed that some of these patients became agitated and even attempted suicide. Could the new wonder drug actually be making patients worse?
Healy draws on his own research and expertise to demonstrate the potential hazards associated with these drugs. He intersperses case histories with insider accounts of the research leading to the development and approval of SSRIs as a treatment for depression.
Let Them Eat Prozac clearly demonstrates that the problems go much deeper than a side-effect of a particular drug. The pharmaceutical industry would like us to believe that SSRIs can safely treat depression, anxiety, and a host of other mental problems. But, as
Let Them Eat Prozac reveals, this "cure" may be worse than the disease.
Customer Reviews:
a burden of proof. .......2007-09-26
A book to read if somebody in your family is considering taking SSRI. Not so much to go agaisnt medical advice but to recognize subsequent side effect that would alert the family member to an untoward reaction from taking the medication. A good book to read also for physicians who are prescribing or seeing patients who take SSRIs. This book goes into many details , from case studies to marketing and legal issues concerning the pharmaceutical companies 's handling of SSRIs. It is a compelling case for a cover up for serious side effects. Even if it only looks at one side of the story, it is a pretty large burden of proof. Not an easy read.
Get Ready To Get Mad.......2006-07-23
Healy is the world's foremost authority on psychopharmacology. The first part of this book (Introduction) is 39 pages and gives a most useful overview of depression's "history," the history of tranquilizers, the discovery of serotonin and chemical imbalances (which he calls a silly myth), SSRIs, etc. The book is also excellent on the marketing of antidepressants. This is where you might get upset as it becomes clear the marketing strategy involves very purposeful distortions of the truth and outright lies. His information about "ghostwriting" (when the drug company actually writes the journal article, not the drug researcher whose name appears on the article) is astonishing. I had read my medical journals for many years without ever even being aware this ever occurred. Healy describes his own experiences where the drug companies have tried to pay him for allowing his name to go on their "research" studies. He believes this is a much greater problem with antidepressants than with other classes of drugs. If all the book were as strong as the Introduction or the ghostwriting and marketing material I would give it five stars. However, he gives a lot of detail about his own experiences which is "why is this in the book?" kind of material. A more general book that is the best thing I have read yet on the antidepressant/antipsychotic topic is America Fooled. It is easy to understand but referenced as well as Healy's books (and I didn't think anyone could match Healy). We are fortunate to have Healy write this and his other books as he speaks from personal experiences and is a giant in the field.
A Disturbing Peak Inside the Machinations of the Pharmaceutical Industry and the Complacency of the Psychiatric Community.......2006-07-01
Dr. David Healy's Let Them Eat Prozac is packed with painstakingly referenced information. The book is deceptively panoramic in scope, ranging from ghost written article/adverts in medical journals masquerading as science, to how the line between the psychiatric community and the pharmaceutical industry has become increasingly blurred. Healy diligently documents how society has been inundated with information regarding the newest and `most proficient' pharmaceuticals, and how it has been increasingly difficult of late to separate legitimate scientific observations from the highly evolved marketing the industry has used to engage the public.
Dr. Healy tackles many key issues and demonstrates admirably how one should handle some of the more sensitive of these without sounding sensationalistic. There is much in this book that would otherwise not be public knowledge, and as Healy explains how the billions of dollars that these companies spend on public relations are used, one comes to appreciate/abhor the tact with which the pharmaceutical industry has promoted their products. However, David Healy is a man who refuses to play their game:
"A string of colleagues from Japan through Europe to the US called me or emailed me to tell me that they had been told to have no contact with me - that I was trouble, and about to be in trouble." (pg 248)
The quote refers to the difficulties Dr. Healy faced in bringing the life-threatening side effects of these drugs (namely akathisia and psychoses) to the attention of the public and the psychiatric community. These difficulties would reach their apex when his job contract with the University of Toronto was rescinded after he presented his concerns that some of these more dangerous side effects were being overlooked, concerns that would later prove true and result in a black box suicide warning being placed on all SSRIs and SNRIs.
Easily the best and most important non-fiction book I have ever read. I'll end with a couple quotes to give you a better idea of the content:
Memo from chief executive in the German branch of Lilly: "Hans [Weber] had medical problems with these directions and I have great concerns about it. I do not think I could explain to the BGA, to a judge, to a reporter or even to my family why we do this especially on the sensitive issue of suicide and suicidal ideation." (Healy 248) Followed by another memo: "I personally wonder whether we are really helping the credibility of an excellent ADE system by calling overdose what a physician reports as suicide attempt and by calling depression what a physician is reporting as suicide ideation."
Based on this it is safe to say that by the turn of the century, around 50% of the "scientific" literature in pharmacotherapeutics was ghost-written, originated within companies, or was published in non-peer-reviewed supplements to journals. (Healy 187)
Disturbing, somewhat useful, murky.......2006-05-08
This important book undermines its effectiveness by jumbling together several distinct story lines:
1. The influence of pharmaceutical money on science and the practice of medicine.
2. The value of antidepressants versus their troubling side effects, most notably suicidality.
3. The legal battles over (a) the "Prozac defense" and (b) product liability of Lilly for adverse drug reactions.
4. Dr. Healy's personal travails as a result of his concerns about the safety of SSRI's.
Jumbling these related-but-different issues together results in a murky book, in which none of the four stories emerges clearly.
In general, Dr. Healy's views on these issues seem to be
1. Pharmaceutical money has badly corrupted both science and clinical practice.
2. Antidepressants and other psychotropics are important tools, but because the science and clinical practice have been skewed by pharmaceutical companies, they are over-prescribed, mis-prescribed, and generally used injudiciously.
3. The only reason his side has lost the legal battles that it has lost is the corrupt influence of pharma, and
4. He got screwed by the Evil powers.
I found the cases he made for points 1 and 2 (if I teased them out of the murk correctly) fairly persuasive, the case for point 3 provocative but not entirely compelling, and the case for point 4 hard to judge.
If you have a fair amount of patience and a serious interest in the different story lines Dr. Healy addresses, and if you know enough about the methodological issues involved in different ways of doing research to evaluate his criticisms of the preferred methodologies of pharmaceutical-funded research, the book is certainly worth reading. Otherwise, I suspect you will find the book more confusing and (probably) misleading than enlightening.
very disappointing.......2006-04-27
An interesting book and there will be much discussion as to whether David Healy is ultimately correct.
However, what does concern me about David Healys work, is that it is basically negative. If he believes that S.S.R.I.sare in many cases worse than placebo, what is he advocating in their place? It is well understood that anti-depressants along with the various counselling therapies, can prove very effective.
In Doctor Healys local authority however, there is a 9 month waiting list to see a psychologist. Is David Healy advocating and campaigning for more psychologists in his work-place?
In the future, new drugs will have less and less relevance. It is becoming far too expensive to continue to develop and test them. There has to be an alternative.
2 of the most beneficial are: MEDITATION and HEALING With the right tools anyone can practice both with amazing results and nil side-effects.
IT IS TIME RIGHT NOW FOR EVERYONE TO WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE1111

Customer Reviews:
In answer to "What is true?".......2007-07-13
Tryptophan (a serotonin precursor) is a large amino acid not easily absorbed; carbohydrates improve tryptophan absorbtion. Fat would slow the action of the carbohydrates, so turkey on rice is better than turkey on rice with gravy for absorbing tryptophan. However, high carbohydrates trigger the release of serotonin. If it is night and you are going to bed, that might be good. If it is in the middle of the day and you are trying to build your serotonin reserves (or curb your appetite), high carbs in the absence of tryptophan are bad. Carbs must be used wisely and with purpose.
I Don't Binge Anymore!.......2001-12-20
This book has completely turned my life around. I thought my bingeing on carbs was simply a matter of willpower. After reading this book, I now understand the biological reason for it. My body was screaming for Seritonin. This book explains how to enable your body to create more seritonin without bingeing. With more seritonin, i no longer have the desire to binge. The author Judith Wurtman does an excellent job of explaining why we get uncontrollable cravings and how to qual them. She also does a great job in explaining why the 'Low Carb Diets' only make you crave carbs more. Thank God for this book. It's helped me understand how your body works and why it craves certain things at different times. Buy it, you won't regret it.
What is true?.......2000-03-20
I have read many serotonin-related books and I am quite confused. In his book "Beyond Prozac" Michael J. Norden, an eminent Psychiatrist, states that the much-publicized high-carbohydrate diet may actually make you depressed and overweight. In "Potatoes not Prozac" a high-carb plus protein diet is advocated. Dr. Joel Robertson in his "Natural Prozac" states that protein is a dopamine booster. Who should one believe? What is true and what is not? Should one accept Dr. Wurtman's approach as correct? O.K. she is an M.I.T. professor but the other authors have impressive academic credentials as well.
Finally...a system that works!.......1999-11-02
I have been using this book's recommendations religiously since August, and I've lost thirteen pounds. This is the only diet I've ever been on that has enabled me to exercise at the same time, and not become terribly depressed. The only other way I could lose weight was with diet pills, and then I couldn't exercise because I didn't have the energy. It fits my eating patterns perfectly, and I have not had any near-fainting episodes from low blood sugar in months. I also have suffered from mild obsessive-compulsiveness in the past; I believe that this diet helps control that, too. I take vitamins, fatty acids, and kava kava in addition to this diet, and I am telling everyone I know about it. Thanks so much for all your research. I would like to see a sequel with a maintenance diet plan.

Customer Reviews:
Great Book!!!.......2007-06-25
This is a great book. The characters are very realistic. I felt I was right there going through everything with Victoria. You hope that there would be a happy ending but unfortunately many times as in real life there is none. I highly recommend this book to anyone that knows someone taking or considering going on any type of antidepressants. This book will make you think twice on taking any drug that a doctor prescribes without doing any research. Kerry is a great writer and I will continue to read more of her books!
A must read. You will be a changed person!.......2007-06-16
My heart ached for all characters. Life does not always have an happy ending.
This is a gut truth tale of great joy and even greater devastation.
You make an immediate connection to the characters. You go on the yoyo ride from the first kiss to the never ending heartache. And in the middle is a true medical condition out of control.
You will ask yourself: What would I do?
For those of us who have been there or still are, we know there are no words to ease the pain on either side.
Kerry A Jones you have put into words what we couldn't. Thank You!
wonderful love story (and realistic).......2007-06-15
I have been on antidepressants for 8 years and I really related to the experiences of the characters. It is so hard for the person on this "medication" to realize how much it really does change your personality. The depersonalization causes you to act so bizarre that even your closest friends and family members do not recognize you.
Do not let the one negative review keep you from buying this book. If you are on antidepressants or know somebody who is, then this book is a must read. It puts a face and a story to the side effects listed (and not listed) on the back of the prescription.
Realistic Read.......2007-06-15
When I saw the review that said, "The poor girl couldn't see that the guy didn't want her anymore. She wanted to blame the drug withdrawal," I just had to write a review of my own. I couldn't help but think if the Gerri "The Rip" character were a real-life person, this is exactly the evil interpretation of events she'd use to keep Derek from realizing what really happened.
The truth is, Orion in the Winter Sky is a realistic portrayal of how the loved ones must adapt to the changing world of those addicted to prescription drugs, both those affected because of love and those affected by taking advantage of those who need help.
This is a good book and I recommend for people who may want to be able to relate to someone going through this type of situation. Keep writing Ms. Jones you have great talent.
Great read........2007-06-14
This is the second book I have read from this author and I can honestly say its a GREAT read. I went through this myself being that my boyfriend went through the bad effects while on the meds and especially after. He is still working through it. I identified with book and understand the story. Great job, I felt the pain of main character. I can't wait for your next book Kerry.

Book Description
When the original edition of Prozac and the New Antidepressants was published just three years ago, more than eleven million people were taking Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, and the other "new antidepressants"-amid a swirling national debate about their effectiveness, their dangers, and their societal implications. Today the number is estimated to have almost doubled, and the number of new drugs being used to treat depression has also increased significantly. But what do most of these people really know about these so-called miracle drugs? In this practical and user-friendly guide, Harvard Medical School professor William Appleton answers all the important basic questions, including:
How do I know if I need to take an antidepressant?
What are the various side effects?
Which antidepressant is right for me?

Customer Reviews:
Second best.......2007-05-28
This is the second best book of its kind. The first is Dr. Appleton's newer edition (2004) "The New Antidepressants and Atianxieties".
Not very useful.......2005-11-05
One glaring omission is that he fails to mention that SSRIs can cause permanent sexual side effects even after discontinuance. Long overlooked by the medical community. Do google search for details.
Up-to-date look at antidepressants.......2003-03-13
Appleton offers a cutting-edge look at the current crop of antidepressants. However, this isn't just a recitation of facts, but also Appleton offering his own views about the state of medication in our society. I only share some of his views. It's worth checking out to see if you agree with him. Also worth checking out if you're considering taking an antidepressant and want to get a feel for what's available. Avery Z. Conner, author of "Fevers of the Mind".
Thank You.......2002-08-17
Simply, although I was embarrassed to be seen buying this book,
after years (beginning in early childhood) of anxiety and panic attacks that were dramatically affecting my life and my family......it made me finally realize and ADMIT the fact that I had to seek some help. Living in Europe has expecially made this book beneficial to me since all the brand names are changed when they come here or vice versa and who knows what the heck you are taking. There really is help out there and yes, it's true - it is genetic. Very simply written and informative.
Good Introduction to Antidepressants!.......2002-04-19
This is an excellant place to start if you want to know more about antidepressant drugs. It is easy to read and understand but this is not just some guy's opinion. The information contained here is current to the date of publication.
As a bonus the author includes a review of various medications not available in America but commonly used overseas (Europe mostly) and some herbal medicines. This section is also helpful and easy to read and look up specific herbs or medicines.
The section on drugs in the "pipeline" is not of the same quality and interest as the rest of the book. Skim it if you must but don't start with the last chapter and think it is reflect of the rest of the book.
This would be helpful for those with depression or for family members trying to understand depression and options for treatment. It is also a useful tool for non-medical service providers who need an easy reference tool for common antidepressant medications.
