Luckily, there are now tests that can determine the size of your cholesterol and whether it is a problem. And there are steps you can take to do something about it if it is. As I explain in The South Beach Heart Program, the earlier you know where you stand in terms of your risk for heart disease, the greater your chance of preventing a heart attack or stroke in the future.
Before I go into how you can find out the size of your cholesterol, let me give you a little background on cholesterol in general.

The South Beach Heart Program.......2007-09-22
I am a Registered Nurse and believe that this book WILL save lives if people will use his program. I brought my total cholesterol down 80 points in just 3 months-in my case, using old-fashioned oatmeal and 2 tbsp. milled flaxseed EVERY morning for breakfast and THEN following the South Beach Diet for the rest of the day. (I cannot go almost completely without carbs, it doesn't work for me.)My HDLs (good) are OVER 85 and my LDLs (bad) are less than 120. Triglycerides were great, at less than 100.My doctor was so shocked, he searched my records to make sure he had not prescribed a statin medication! I hope this is not too technical and helps you.
Comprehensive.......2007-09-07
From the author/cardiologist of the popular "South Beach Diet" comes "The South Beach Heart Program" -a book designed to get and keep your heart in shape via a 4 step plan.
Step one is getting on a good diet. It should come to no surprise that the diet plan recommended is the heart healthy South Beach Diet. Step two is the exercise portion and the book recommend walking and strengthening exercises, particularly your core. The rationale here is that you can't keep your heart strong and exercise if your other muscles are weak. Step three is about getting the right tests. In other words, the earlier you get the tests, the better your chances are of preventing a heart attack or stroke. And finally, step four is getting the right medications one might need.
Good for anyone concerned about being heart healthy, I recommend this book for due to its comprehensive discussion of its subject in plain language. Also recommend The Sixty-Second Motivator for readers needing help making healthy lifestyle changes. Good luck!

Gave me the tools to help myself. Wish I had the book twenty years ago.
The South Beach Heart Program .......2007-07-06
I thought it fell short in providing "do's and dont's" for the diet. It was a wealth of information on the diagnosis and treatment of heart desease. I was looking for step by step instructions on how to follow the diet, I did not get much information at all on the subject.
The South Beach Heart Program: The 4-Step Plan that Can Save Your Life.......2007-05-26
This is an excellent book and should be required reading for all adults and probably on an exit exam for high school students. I have bought five copies of the book and given four away to friends and family. I will probably buy a few more. This book tells the reader how to analyze the problem, measure it and deal with it.

A comprehensive list of all alternative and orthodox treatments for cancer.......2007-10-10
Having been recently diagnosed with colon cancer (removed by operation) and liver cancer (secondary) I needed to know some answers regarding future treatments. Having heard and seen the results of the 'orthodox' route I wanted none of that! This book informed me of all of the alternatives on offer and covered each protocol very thoroughly. I highly recommend this book to every cancer sufferer. You will not be disappointed. Incidentally I chose the Budwig route.
Insightful read.......2007-09-21
I found this book to be very insightful and I took alot of the information and worked it into my life. It shows a lot of ways to improve our health on a daily basis that could make an impact on our future health. Great book for anyone who has a loved one with cancer.
Fantastico!.......2007-09-15
I am an 18-year LIVER, not "survivor," of a diagnosis of low-grade, Non-Hodgkins lymphoma. I have lived 8-10 years LONGER than the "average" person lives with such a diagnosis. I have done that by doing as much alternative treatment---diet, psychology, exercise, supplementation, etc---as possible, and by using mainstream medicine as little as possible.
That said, I will say, about this book, that in my 18 years of researching cancer treatments, this is one of the best, if not THE BEST, books on cancer I have ever had the pleasure to read. It is concise and easy to understand. It is encouraging---it gives the reader real hope. And it is for BOTH those diagnosed with cancer, and for those who have not yet been diagnosed with cancer. I say "not yet diagnosed with cancer" because the statistics, in the United States, at least, say that ONE out of every TWO men will be diagnosed with cancer, and TWO out of every THREE women will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in his or her life. So if you do not yet have cancer, get busy and read this book! If you do have a diagnosis of cancer, get busy and read this book! It is literally a LIFE-SAVER! Even if you were to spend $40 dollars on this book, that is less than you would spend on one visit to an oncologist, and this book will give you 4,000 times MORE GOOD INFORMATION on how to prevent or how to heal from cancer than an oncologist EVER will!
How to Fight Cancer & Win -- Saving Lives.......2007-08-23
The book was purchased for a friend undergoing radiation for lymphnoma cancer in chest (following lung cancer surgery and chemo). She was not very excited that I brought home a book. Eventually, she opened the book and begin to read.
The book has facts about cancer that she had never been told by her doctors. The natural resources, like wheatgrass, for healthy nutrition has made an enormous change in her body and how she has been able to handle the radiation. The doctor keeps asking her, "Are you sure you don't hurt?" Her answer is "No, I feel fine".
Read it........2007-07-23
This book really opened my eyes. I do not know why the American Cancer Association has not looked into trying this remedies. It sure is a pity.

Book Description
While most books focus solely on the role of cholesterol in heart disease, Reverse Heart Disease Now draws on new research that points to the surprising other causes. Two leading cardiologists draw on their collective fifty years of clinical cardiology research to show you how to combine the benefits of modern medicine, over-the-counter vitamins and supplements, and simple lifestyle changes to have a healthy heart.

An excellent book if you are interested in being proactive about heart health. Plenty of information regarding the use of supplements for heart disease. Definitely worth the read.
A patient's review.......2007-05-15
THIS BOOK SHOULD BE REQUIRED READING FOR EVERY PRACTICING CARDIOLOGIST IN THE AMA. IT JUST MIGHT EXTEND THE HEALTHFUL LIVES OF A FEW MILLION PEOPLE.
Optimistic assessment for heart patients, but some info overload too........2007-04-11
In the final chapter of the book, the authors set out what they call the "four pillars of healing." These are:
1. A healthy diet to help you achieve a healthy body weight.
2. Appropriate over-the-counter supplements and prescription medications for your condition.
3. Exercise.
4. Use of mind/body techniques to control unhealthy moods, attitudes, and behaviors.
The main text of the book, however, does not give equal emphasis to these four "pillars." The authors use 2 chapters and 71 pages to discuss over-the-counter supplements. They discuss prescription medications in one 17 page chapter. They discuss diet in an 11 page chapter. They discuss exercise in one short 5 page chapter. They discuss stress management in one 10 page chapter. Supplements get much more coverage than all other treatments combined. The authors acknowledge that heart disease (plaque build up in your arteries) is a lifestyle disease (p.217). They recommend lifestyle changes, but the overwhelming impression you get from the book is that over-the-counter supplements are the most essential treatment for heart disease/plaque build up in your arteries.
The authors are so enamoured with supplements, that they give you a full regimen with estimated costs. They estimate the cost to follow their supplement recommendations at from $100 to $500 a month. You will take a handful of pills daily if you follow their supplement recommendations. For many, this prospect may be just as unappealing as taking a handful of prescription medications.
One major weakness in the book is that the authors don't provide any footnote references in their text. They provide an extensive list of books and articles at the end of the book, but there is no realistic way to see whether these actually support the many claims of the authors throughout the book.
The authors also describe a surprising number of obscure techniques for testing for heart disease - many of which your doctor will never have heard of and won't know how to interpret. Given the pervasiveness of heart disease in our society, we don't need more sophisticated testing techniques. Just assume that you need to act to prevent or treat it. The most effective techniques for preventing and treating heart disease are lifestyle changes that we should all adopt anyway.
The authors claim to practice integrative medicine. I was still surprised to see that they have a 9-page chapter in which they support the use of intravenous and oral chelation therapy. And yet they also at times recommend bypass surgery and angioplasty. I was not surprised that neither surgery nor chelation made it onto their "four pillars" list. Yet, for these authors, integrative medicine seems to mean that "anything goes."
Throughout the book the authors rely heavily on their own clinical experience in treating heart patients. They discuss success stories with patients who had even very severe problems. The authors are refreshingly optimistic that even severely afflicted heart patients can achieve symptom relief and a fairly normal life. That is certainly one of the valuable messages of this book.
This book provides a lot of interesting information about a whole lot of methods for diagnosing and treating heart disease. Notwithstanding the usefulness of the "four pillars," the book is weak in describing a plan of action for you. Too much emphasis is placed on over-the-counter supplements. We know heart disease is treatable, but there is no magic bullet treatment. Give yourself the best chance by also incorporating ALL of the other "pillars" into your prevention or treatment program.
Must Read.......2007-04-10
Everyone should read this book. It contains valuable information whether you have heart disease or just want to try and prevent it.
Up to date and useful.......2007-04-01
This accurate and up-to-date book presents useful information on heart disease in easy to understand language.
Book Description
The public too often hears about a new life-saving therapy, only to be told that the treatment won't be available for many years. The Life Extension Foundation is proud to release the fourth edition of Disease Prevention and Treatment. This significantly expanded fourth edition provides 1,535 pages of concise information about therapies that are documented in the scientific literature, but are not routinely incorporated into clinical medical practice. Many of the recommendations in this latest edition of DiseasePrevention and Treatment provide "inside" information about what innovative physicians are doing to prevent and treat the degenerative diseases of aging. Disease Prevention and Treatment contains novel information that the general public and their doctors are largely unaware of. A few examples of the kind of unique information contained in this book include:
A drug that is 92% effective in preventing the flu in people who have been exposed to influenza.
A simple head positioning technique that resolves vertigo symptoms in 50% of cases.
Proven methods to reduce prescription drug side effects while saving big dollars on your drug purchases.
A nutrient that suppresses excess insulin production, resulting in reduced carbohydrate craving and subsequent body fat reduction.
The devastating role that chronic inflammation plays in degenerative disease and novel methods of suppressing the inflammatory cascade.
A simple blood test that predicts your risk of developing type II diabetes four years ahead of time.
Hormone imbalances that cause mental depression and how you can correct these.
FDA-approved drugs that fight cancer, but are over-looked by most oncologists.
Novel methods to treat either constipation-or diarrhea type irritable bowel syndrome.
Steps you can take right now to dramatically reduce stroke risk.
Eight critical steps to controlling or curing cancer that are not routinely used in conventional oncology practice.
The missing link that causes fibromyalgia patients to endure chronic pain.
The most effective drug to alleviate the miseries of insomnia.
Why anti-hypertensive drugs often fail to adequately control high blood pressure and how the dose can be adjusted to make them work better.
The only therapy shown to slow the progression of Parkinson's disease (by 44%) over a 16-month study period.
A nutritional protocol for autistic children that parents said doubled improvement in just eight weeks.
A European drug that protects against glaucoma-induced optic nerve damage.
A French drug that lowers infections associated with chronic bronchitis by 60%
Precautions one should take when supplementing with DHEA.
Safer estrogen replacement drugs to relieve menopausal miseries.
An OTC drug that can knock out herpes outbreaks within 24 to 48 hours. This drug also shortens the duration of shingles (herpes zoster attacks).
A superior method for treating acute heart attack (blocked coronary arteries) than currently used clot-dissolving therapies (such as tPA).
Why hepatitis C treatment fails so often and a simple step that can be taken to circumvent this impediment.
In-depth protocols to treat the leading types of cancer including prostate, breast and colon.
A common hormone deficiency that contributes to age-associated mental impairment and congestive heart failure.
The protocols discussed in this book are documented by thousands of published studies from internationally recognized scientific journals. Despite this bountiful evidence, the medical establishment largely ignores many of the therapies recommended in this book.
The leading cause of death and disability today is ignorance about scientific approaches to prevent and treat degenerative disease. The novel information contained in Disease Prevention and Treatment could literally save your life. This hardbound book is fully indexed to enable the reader to quickly locate innovative solutions for 129 difficult-to-treat medical conditions. This medical reference is a must have for any home library.

Very Good Except...........2004-08-06
The book is well-documented and gives complete and clear explanations of diseases, causes, and possible solutions - ultimately suggesting which product is a natural way to releive symptoms and improve health. That's fine, except they don't do enough to alert you that fixing one thing may be bad for another. While you can talk live to an "advisor" anytime, they are not medical doctors and may not be aware of negative consequences of an item. For example, if you have burning with urination, the book and advisors may lead you to take the potent "CRANMAX" which may be excellent for urinary tract infection. But if the burning is from prostrate problems, a heavy dose of cranberry juice (quite acidic) is not a good idea.
They should do more to point such contradictions.
The Baby Boomer's Survival Manual- A "Must Have" Book.......2003-11-15
As the largest block of Americans approaches the ranks of senior status, we face an economy that is incapable of taking care of us we become feeble incompetent old people, especially when there will be more people over the age of 50 in the USA than under the age of 50 by the year 2025!! We owe it to ourselves and our children to be strong, healthy, vital seniors capable of thinking for ourselves, strong enough to carry our own groceries, healthy enough to function independently and if we need to, continue to work well past 65 to support ourselves. The only way to do this is with the Prevention of Disease, not by treating the symptoms of degenerative diseases after they occur. This comprehensive text is extremely valuable for anyone interested in saving their own future, from the medical person to the average consumer of nutritional products.
Disease Prevention and Treatment.......2003-08-18
As a registered nurse and also a diabetic, I found the Fourth Edition to
contain an impressive amount of helpful information. I not only read the
chapter on Diabetes, but I also read several other chapters that are related
to health conditions that both my husband and I experience. I was very
impressed by the fact that the information was presented in a professional
manner and was substantiated by numerous recent scientific studies to refer
to for more specific information about the methods used and the findings
described. I plan to implement some of the information given in the Diabetes
chapter and to discuss other issues that might apply to my condition with my
doctor during my next visit. I have no reservations about encouraging
everyone to read the information in this book.
An encyclopedic style, "user friendly" resource.......2003-08-09
Now in an updated and expanded fourth edition, Disease Prevention And Treatment from the Life Extension Foundation is an exhaustive, 1535-page encyclopedic style, "user friendly" resource compiling information drawn from research studies and the experiences of physicians worldwide. The "reader friendly" entries range from allergies, to thyroid disease, to scientific protocols that integrate mainstream and alternative medicine. Disease Prevention And Treatment is an impressive and strongly recommended resource for medical students, medical practitioners, and the non-professional general reader in need of quick and authoritative medical reference.
Itýs like having a doctor on call........2003-07-19
There's a truth to the saying "knowledge is power". The more a person learns about the functions and dis-functions of their own body, the better chance they have of living a healthy life. But most people don't talk to their doctor or visit a hospital on a daily basis - so how would you know, for example, if your diet is not the best one for your gout.
By no means am I saying the "Disease Prevention and Treatment" book should replace your visits to the doctor - but it's an amazing source for medical knowledge.
Just about anything you need to know from preventing acne to treating cardiovascular disease can be found in this well written and easy to comprehend reference book. What I found most interesting is that Melanie Segala and The Life Extension Foundation are not biased when offering treatment advice. Both traditional treatments and therapies not yet accepted by mainstream medicine are explained as well as a comprehensive overview of the disease itself. All the information is backed up by years of scientific research.
If you care about living healthy, as opposed to just living, I highly recommend this book.

Customer Reviews:
Thank God for Dr Walser.......2007-10-09
This book, in my opinion, is a must for kidney patients. Well written and easy to understand, it gave me a much better understanding of CKD and what I need to do to live a longer and healthier life. Dialysis is not something I want to experience.
After being diagnosed with CKD 18 months ago (stage 3)I did a lot of research on diet, etc. and happened upon Dr. Walser's book. With the approval of my nephrologist, I started using the amino acid suppliments in place of most of my dietary protein. My GFR went from 45 to 75 in three months. Very heartening!
Most of the recipe books for CKD patients, in my opinion, offer a nutritionally deficient regimen and many seemed more like recipe books for developing diabetes. Being a person who likes whole foods, I decided to create my own diet regimen. I bought a copy of DietPro (a diet program that tracks food nutrition by weight) for my computer, a digital food scale, some Calwood Nutritionals amino acid powders and some of the other nutritional suppliments Dr Walser recommended. Since I'm still in the earlier stages of CKD, some days I still eat a small amount of animal protein with my evening meal, but limit it to under 4 ounces raw. I keep my potassium at 2000-3000 mg, phosphorus at 1500-1000 and sodium to under 1500 daily.
It wasn't easy at first, but I'm used to it now. It takes a bit of time to set up the menu plan initially, but after that I spend about 15 minutes a day on DietPro working out my daily menu. My nephrologist says I'm doing very well and says he wishes more of his patients took a more active interest in managing their CKD. My bun creatine levels have improved and my blood potassium levels have dropped to the normal range. The swelling in my ankles and hands is pretty much gone too.
Thank you Dr. Walser!!!!
A Must for Those with Kidney Disease.......2007-08-09
This book is the best out there on Kidney Disease and how to manage it. I rated it 4 stars instead of 5 because I think there is room for improvement with regards to diet and menus. For those seeking information on Kidney Disease and how to best deal with it, the biggest frustration is the lack of good information available. The author explains why not much has been done about educating the public with kidney disease. A lot of good information.
awesome!.......2007-07-29
This book was easy to understand, you could start from the beginning or skip to sections of interest.
Very Helpful.......2007-07-15
Even though some of this book is technical, most of it has case histories on people who delayed dialysis for many years so that is proof that patients can delay dialysis with diet alone. There was also mention of amino acids and when I mentioned it to our physician and nephrologist, our nephrologist told me we didn't need amino acids and not to administer anything without consulting with him. However this book can help with the diet and help loved ones cope with Kidney disease as when you are told someone in your family has it, it is a shock and feeling of despair, this book comes in handy.
It has helped me better dealing with it.
Helpful.......2007-02-14
This book may be more helpful for the person who is a borderline candidate for kidney disease in instructing them in ways to better care for themselves, what to avoid and what to look for in regards to progression of the disease.

Life Saving Message.......2007-01-10
Bob Kowalski is my hero.
I skimmed through a copy of this book and then purchased a copy for myself. It is very readable, yet covers an immense amount of detail.
I made the decision to follow this program out of desperation.
My doctor practices medicene, and medicene says old guys like me with bad lipid data should be taking Statins drugs. Another lipid exam was conducted at the end of six weeks.
Total Cholesterol had dropped from dropped dramatically, weight had come down 6 pounds, and no problem with kidney enzymes was indicated.
Bob provides specific information, specific sources, phone numbers and a sizeable index of web sites.
It is a fun book to give to friends that are experiencing the frustration
of life with high cholesterol.
There Is No Cure.......2006-11-10
After reading this book, I have come to a simple conclusion: You can't beat the effectiveness of statin drugs.
The author basically instructs the reader to eat right, exercise and take high doses of Vitamins E, C, and a few other vitamins along with Omega-3 oils, and strict doses of Niacin. Now that's all well and good, but if I were to follow the authors advice on dosage of the aforementioned vitamins and oils, then it would end up costing me significantly more, way more than my $10/month co-pay for Zocor. Plus, like I mentioned, there's no amount of vitamins that can beat a statin drug's effectiveness at lowering cholesterol.
So while the book has some useful advice, keep in mind there is no "cure" and you really won't see significant lowering of LDL or total cholesterol levels using this book. Talk to your doctor about a statin drug.
It worked for me!.......2006-10-13
I got this book last year. It is simple and easy to read. I ordered the supplements immediately. In 3 months I had lowered my cholesterol 28 points so the Dr. did not make me try a prescription. Even with a foot injury and not exercising, the eating habits and taking the phytosterols this year, my cholesterol was down even more. I highly recommend it!
The "Secret" Ingredient.......2006-04-05
I went to my doctor in November 2005 and had my Cholesterol checked. It was a disaster.
Here were the results:
Total Cholesterol: 291
Triglycerides: 279
HDL Cholesterol 42
VLDL Cholesterol 56
LDL Cholesterol 193
My M.D. suggested I read "The new 8 week Cholesterol Cure" and follow Mr. Kowalski's advice and check back in 4 months, which I did.
I just got my new results back and am ecstatic.
Here are the results:
Total Cholesterol: 174
Triglycerides: 79
HDL Cholesterol 60
VLDL Cholesterol 16
LDL Cholesterol 98
I also read about a dozen other books on the topic but none compare to this book of practical advice.
I can't say enough about this program. It has changed my life.
It works!!!!.......2006-03-23
This wonderful doctor is definetly on to something. My husband whose family has a history of heart disease has lowered his cholesterol from 243 to 173 in 8 weeks. this book is loaded with important information so you can begin your lifestyle change without perhaps having to depend on prescription drugs.
Book Description
Articles in Time and US News and World Reports have cited alternative medicine as the fastest-growing area in veterinary care. More than ever, pet owners are demanding facts on using these non-invasive healing methods for their pets. Author Amy Shojai has interviewed top vets across the country, including members of the Holistic Veterinary Medical Association and noted veterinarian Susan Wynn. Pet owners will learn why some vets moved away from mainstream medicine, how the "Healing Instinct" leads animals to their own natural cures, and how alternative therapies actually work. Readers will find tips for treating problems like aggression, fleas, and heart problems with accupressure, homeopathy, nutrition, herbs, exercise and traditional home remedies. Sidebars give "Alternative Success" stories and warning signs for when to call the vet. Now pet owners can be sure their pets have the same practical, holistic healing options as humans do.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book!.......2007-06-17
This book is absolutely awesome! It begins by explaining what alternative medicine is, why pets get sick, and making the switch from allopathic to holistic medicine. It also describes, from A to Z, common ailments and how various vets treat them. There are snippets about how pets treat themselves for certain diseases, when to call the vet, and anecdotes pertaining to the ailment. It also has an extensive alternative healing resource guide.
Natural Healing.......2007-05-26
This book is full of several remedies for many different illnesses, problems, etc...
Highly recommended.
Another winner from Amy.......2005-07-22
Amy has written yet another good book for pet owners. As the trend in natural healing continues, good resources such as this book, The Natural Health Bible for Dogs & Cats, 8 Weeks to a Healthy Dog, and The Allergy Solution for Dogs serve as important sources of information for pet owners. Read this book and start learning how you can work with your doctor to keep your pet happy and healthy.
Saving my dog's life.......2005-07-06
A friend knew how my aging dog, Nina, was quite ill and that my family was not planning a second surgery, as she might not survive the operation and, besides, the mass on her liver had grown back in a year. She gave me a copy of this wonderful book, which gives options for health care. Impressed with the book, I ordered many copies and have given a copy to others who love their dogs and cats and want an option to drugs or surgery. Here it is! Nina's had extra time with her family and I have a new respect for natural healing, for pets and for people. You should buy several copies of "New Choices in Natural Healing for Dogs & Cats", so you may share the love.
Couldn't Put it Down................2002-06-25
I am in the process of learning about holistic health care for my 2 lhasa apsos and have recently purchased a few books on the subject. I started one book and set it aside to finish later. I picked up "New Choices in Natural Healing for Dogs & Cats" and couldn't put it down until I was finished! I was so impressed with the layout of such a large amount of information. This book is chock-full of great information and it is presented in a terrific format giving the read first the "The Signs" of the condition, then "The Cause" and the "The Solutions". The solutions can be numerous with the author offering different suggestions and not seeming to be biased towards any one particular holistic remedy. Directions are very clear, concise, and easily understood. Some choices mentioned are natural diet (which seems to be the first and obvious step towards better health care for an animal), natural supplements, herbal remedies, vitamins, aroma-therapy, magnet therapy, accupressure with diagrams shown, and of course, recommendations to call your vet to assist in dosage. Although you feel there is alot to learn, the information is broken down so well, it is easy to retain alot of what you read in the first go around with this book. I am sure I will be picking it up time and time again while working to get my dogs in the best possible health. Also included are some behavior problems. I guarantee you will learn some new and valuable information!

It's every pet owner's nightmare: suddenly your four-legged friend isn't breathing. What to do? There is no 911 for pets, so it's up to you to save a life. The First Aid Companion for Dogs & Cats is a straightforward guide that covers both major problems--CPR, heat stroke, and strangulation--and minor ones, such as swollen tails, ingrown nails, and flea allergies. Beginning with simple tests and explanations of general care issues like dehydration examinations and triage, this guide then moves on to an alphabetical listing of every possible situation, from arrow wounds to worms.
The individual sections are good for both general reading and instant assistance. Each one starts with a notice of when to call the vet--immediately, the same day, or as needed. It also lists what items from your pet's medicine chest will be needed, which may include anything from corn syrup to towels and panty hose. The information that follows this simple checklist is divided into "do this now," "special situations," "follow-up care," and "the best approach." Whenever necessary, simple sketches are included to help show proper technique, such as fashioning an instant muzzle from a pair of nylons, or how to cover a dog's head in case of an ear-flap injury. Relying frequently on common household items like antihistamines, turkey basters, Gatorade, and plastic wrap, this guide assumes most of us won't have special medical training or supplies and focuses on very specific and simple methods of helping your pet achieve the best possible care. Even more importantly, many suggestions are included on prevention of accidents--isn't it easier to get that window screen repaired than to rush your kitty to the vet after a bad fall?--Jill Lightner

Superb !.......2007-09-06
This is a wonderful movie. Exquisitely executed in period costume, with a world class orchestra. It was delightfully free of uneccessary verbage and saturated with eroticism. Sandra
I found this book a must-have for pet professionals.......2007-07-12
I own Animal Companions pet sitting service in Houston, Texas, and I found this book a must-have for pet professionals. Laid out in a format similar to a Physician's Desk Reference, you may easily and quickly (and time is always of the essence with a sick pet!) look up information based on presenting symptoms.
It is an amazing supplement to hands-on first aid training. I immediately purchased a copy of this book for myself and each of my employees, to keep in our cars right next to our pet first aid kit. I also picked up a copy to keep at home, for my own furry loved ones.
An Outstanding Mini-Encyclopedia of Pet Care.......2007-07-03
There is so much useful information in just this one volume. What's more, there is a symptom finder, allowing a quick overview of possible causes of given symptoms among dogs and cats. There are two tables of poison hazards, including one which tells what human medications should never be given to cats (although veterinarians advise that no human medications should ever be given to animals without checking with them). The animal conditions that can be helped by first aid range from life-threatening situations to such usually-minor things as constipation in cats. There are many helpful diagrams. One of them shows how to make a homemade Elizabethan collar and another one shows how to restrain a seriously-injured animal for the trip to the vet.
Good reading, good addition to your medicine cabinet........2007-02-07
We had dogs bitten by a rattlesnake. I had a dog with an allergic reaction.
What do you do? Sure, you can google up an answer, but it's nice to have this book on hand for quick reference.
It is well written and you can actually just read it cover to cover. I learned a lot.
Excellent source.......2006-11-08
I got this book to better care for my adult and senior dogs. I love that the book not only focuses on First Aid but prevention as well as recommendations for when to call the vet. The injuries and illnesses section covers everything you can think of and provides lots of background information as well as treatment. My favorite feature is the recommended medicine chest as well as dosing.

Designed to be a resource for both women who want to maintain breast health and those who've been diagnosed with breast cancer, Breast Cancer? Breast Health! The Wise Woman Way draws on "women's wisdom," or the inner knowledge often ignored by modern medicine, as a powerful tool for healing. Author Susun Weed proposes an anticancer lifestyle, and, if cancer does enter the picture, a six-step plan for healing (sleep is at zero, or "Do Nothing"; surgery is number six, which she terms "Break and Enter"), with various complementary healing techniques included throughout.
Weed is careful to point out that supplements and herbs can hurt as much as they can help, and she lists several alternative-medicine techniques that should be avoided no matter what. The steps she does recommend--from herbal oils for breast massage to help detect lumps early to the herbs milk thistle, dandelion, and burdock for women with liver damage from tamoxifen--are explained clearly, sometimes with fascinating quotes from centuries-old books on healing.
Weed will draw ire from some readers for recommending that mammograms be avoided. She says they tend to squeeze cancer cells into the bloodstream and can't detect cancer until it's metastatic, which are reasons enough to not have them, and adds that women would be better off by making her suggested anticancer lifestyle changes, paying more attention to their breasts, and performing regular self-exams.
The warnings about the dangers of electromagnetic fields, exposure to estrogen, and organochlorides from plastics may frighten some, but Weed means to enlighten and empower. She dedicates the book to environmentalist and Silent Spring author Rachel Carson and poet Audre Lorde, who both died of breast cancer. Extensive herbal resources, a solid glossary, and a thorough index are included.
Book Description
Foods, exercises, and attitudes to keep your breasts healthy. Supportive complimentary medicines to ease side-effects of surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, or tamoxifen. Foreword by Christiane Northrup, M.D.

Excellent Must Have read for women!.......2005-11-18
I found Susan Weed after suffering for over 6 painful months with a very painful breast cyst and took painkillers that didn't help me at all and after trying the hot Ginger Compresses for less than a week I was able to get off of the useless painkillers and get back to a normal life again! I am so thankful to this book for making me feel better. I liked the book so much I became a student of Susan's.
A woman's breast health is her life and I thank you personally Susan for making me feel so much better. Truely a gift for sharing with others!
One of the Best Books on the Market!.......2002-11-13
Whether you or perhaps a friend or family member have had breast cancer, or you are a woman, period, this is a book you should have in your personal library. Author Susun Weed brings you every step of the way in breast health, which modern medicines and practitioners tend to either ignore or not explore.
Breast Cancer? Breast Health! The Wise Woman Way is the first step to wellness and staying healthy. Author Susun Weed has certainly done her homework, with research and a natural lifestyle. She begins with a small personal story and the awakening from it, which leads to the disclosure of her anti-cancer lifestyle, a one page insight of balance and harmony, then ends this section with a how-to on using this book, about herbs and their dangers.
She begins her chapters with the statistics of breast cancer and how they make her feel, how it makes us all feel. She leaves nothing out with her research with complete scientific data and what is accepted in the medical society and what may be likely but not proven. She explores every angle in a not so easy subject.
Moving on to "Can Foods Prevent Cancer?" Again she has done her homework and provided a wealth of information on anti cancer foods, she explores foods, herbs, oils, phytochemicals, vitamins and minerals. In "Taking Our Breasts into Our Own Hands, Breast Self Massage", Ms. Weed goes far beyond just the how-to that we so often get from our Doctors and clinics, thoroughly discussing the many aspects of self-breast exam, including an extensive list and uses of different oils.
As you make your way to the following chapters, you begin to expect much more from her. This is exactly what she gives you! With "Building Powerful Immunity, Journey to the Wise Healer Within", " Mammograms -Who Needs Them?" and the last of the first Section "There's a Lump in my Breast!", she brings you completely full circle as she delves into each of these subjects.
Section two has some of the scariest of topics, but the author gently eases your anxiety as if she is right beside you holding your hand, letting you know you are not alone by exploring every aspect of having Breast Cancer. From "What is Breast Cancer? The Diagnosis", dealing with your emotional state, to "Choosing Surgery Questions to Ask," the topics just continue to flow to give you a complete in-depth exploration, with recipes, suggestions and what to expect no matter what you decide. She gives you extensive resource lists on just about every topic. This book is not a get healed fast pill, but instead an exploratory journey, on one of the most feared and extended taboo subjects in our time. Through it all Susun reminds you; this is Your Life, take control!
Hail to Susun Weed who has brought the light in an age of darkness with this book! Every Clinic, Gynecologist and Oncologist worth their weight should read, then recommend "Breast Cancer? Breast Health! The Wise Woman Way," to all their patients. I give this wonderful archive of information my highest of recommendations!

An empowering, well-researched book........2000-07-18
Finally a book that gives women practical direction on how to facilitate breast health and how to deal with suspicious lumps. The medical community offers us mammograms and biopsies, but the gaps between these procedures are often filled with agonizing uncertainty for most women. Thank you Ms. Weed, for giving us the information we have so desperately needed to be able channel our energies into strengthening our bodies and empowering our spirits.
a misguided approach to a serious disease with mistatements.......1999-10-13
There may be some useful information in this book but her statements about mammograms pushing cancer cells into other parts of the body have no validity and no scientific proof. She is promoting some dangerous thinking that ignores the advances that have been made in breast cancer diagnosis and treatment. Do not let this be the only book you read on the subject!
This book is a must read for women and girls!.......1999-04-17
Breast Cancer? Breast Health! The Wise Woman Way by Susun Weed is a significant contribution to the state of women's health. She has woven statistics, research results, myths and facts into a fabric that is warm and inviting. Her style of injecting motherly and grandmotherly wisdom while sharing facts is very effective. She certainly helped me to accept that breast health is important and more than correct brassiere fitting. I received the book from a friend a few days after I had been diagnosed with breast cancer. I curled up with the book and read for hours, absorbing the spiritual soothing of the letters from the "grandmothers". I was challenged to rethink what I had already experienced and where I should step next. For instance had I read Weed's book prior to the diagnostic tests, I would not have submitted to a mammogram, clearly less than six months after a previous one. I would have requested an ultrasound, since the fact of the lump had already been established. The book encouraged me to slow down and think about optons and my direction. It made me know that I was not foolish in thinking that I could choose a way that would enhance my natural healing capacities rather than compromise them. It has been invaluable as a resource during my journey. The cancer-free lifestyle outline was formidable and empowering. The levels and types of breast cancer that Weed explained equipped me to understand pathology reports and information given in consultations with surgeons and oncologists. I realized gaps in nutritional information, since I was not aware of the many cancer-fighting foods and enzymes. The book encouraged me to reassess my eating habits and to become more serious about my diet. Weed also very ably handles the existing options for women diagnosed with breast cancer. Although she is very clearly a proponent of holistic approaches to healing, she makes the women who would choose the conventional approaches know that their decisions are personal and to be respected. There is no intense politicizing of the issues such that women will feel ashamed or less than courageous if they select the usually recommended course of treatment. She is an advocate for wise behavior on the part of women. Weed has achieved an important goal by writing a book that is womanish, informative, challenging and timely. I agree with her concern that in the next century people will look back and consider our conventional way of treating breast cancer to be barbaric.

The Best Heart Disease Book I've Seen!.......2007-07-25
I've read quite a few books on the subject, and this is the best I've seen. It includes everything from the technical to the practical (including recipes). The author writes clearly...it was relatively easy to read considering the subject matter. I loved that he didn't say "you should never eat______." It can already be so overwhelming to make changes. This book has a lot of information, but I didn't feel overwhelmed. I was actually ENCOURAGED, not discouraged by reading it. I wish I had only bought this book...it's all I needed, and I would have saved a lot of money! I highly recommended it.
I was disappointed.......2007-03-30
I was very disappointed in this book. I thought it would have some of the treatments that Linus Pauling instigated. All it gives you is advice on your diet. I have that from my Doctor!
A Balanced Approach to Heart health issues.......2006-11-04
I found this book helpful - the diets great - the advice about other life factors good - and it gave me an over-all education about all the different treatments now being used. The book seems logical and simple. It makes good sense.
Of course, like most people I bought this book when I was already in trouble with the old heart.
Balanced overview of heart disease and treatment alternatives - provides pros and cons without insisting that it's the only way!.......2006-09-17
Although a pessimist could say that this is a low key ad for Dr. Whitaker's Wellness Institute, which in small part it is, the book provides a balanced view of just what causes heart disease and provides sobering thoughts on the fact that there is no "magic pill" or clear cut way to attack the problem. Differing views are presented and the background for such, although not clearly articulated in the book itself, is provided via the references so that the reader can further explore if more details are desired. The recipes section is somewhat of a waste of print but other than that I found the book very helpful in aiding in an understanding of heart disease and the array of possibilities for treating it. The book also pretty clearly delineates between a "preventative" program and a "reversal" program, dependent on one's personal situation and goals.
How do you know you're reversing heart disease?.......2004-09-06
How can you really know whether coronary heart disease is truly being reversed? Does just surviving until your next birthday suffice? Does not developing symptoms tell you anything? Does even losing 10 lbs really tell you whether coronary plaque has shrunk?
The answer to all these questions, of course, is no. In past, it hasn't been an easy prospect to prove that heart disease is reversed. It's therefore an easy thing to claim. As a result, many programs cropped up in the last 30 years of the last century that made extravagant claims to reverse heart disease. I believe that Dr. Whitaker's well-intended book is among this genre.
The book has its strong points. Dr. Whitaker does a great job of pointing out the terribly misguided approach of conventional invasive cardiology and bypass surgery, its tragic overuse and abuse, and how so-called medical therapy is nothing more than palliative treatment for a relently progressive disease. He also does a good job of discrediting the conventional low-fat diet approach to heart disease prevention, a diet that frequently precedes your heart attack and diabetes.
I do believe, however, that there's much more of the story yet to be told and Dr. Whitaker's book falls short.
