Lotz of good info.......2007-07-27
There is alot of good information in this book. I haven't started applying any of it, so I cannot tell you about that. But, if good, well organized, useful information is what you are after...buy this book.
Book for Pre Diabetics/Diabetics.......2007-07-27
I am pre diabetic and appreciated the information I got from this book. My family has enjoyed the recipes tried so far. They also gave me ideas about how to change my existing favorites.
The Sugar Solution.......2007-07-18
It seems to be a never-ending battle. We start the day with the best of intentions. Today we are going to eat right, exercise, and control our stress. Then reality sets in. We wake up late (that stupid alarm didn't ring) to a chaotic mess of getting kids off to school on time (making sure that homework actually accompanies them). Our only aim at this point is to get to work before the boss notices. There's no time for a real breakfast, exercise, or a nice relaxing meditation session. Coffee and a donut will have to do as we drive through hectic traffic.
By midmorning, adrenaline and four cups of coffee have worn off and we are starting to feel drained. To make up time lost, we skip lunch or gobble down some fast food as we try to get caught up. With some food in our stomach's we finally feel back to normal. Unfortunately, this feeling is short lived and the day drags on.
We all know that we should do better. We all know that we should take the time to eat right, to exercise, and to reduce our stress. However, just getting through each day seems to take up all the energy we have.
The Sugar Solution reminds us that by taking care of ourselves each day we not only reduce the risk of countless life threatening diseases but we also increase our energy levels and abilities to cope with day to day stress. More importantly though, this book unravels the mysteries of carbohydrates and provides nutritional, exercise, and stress relief programs that fit into the average person's busy life.
Ganele a la glucosa.......2007-06-27
I bought this book for my older daughter, who is overweight. Much of the symptoms of her condition were detailed in the book. But the book is too long. Anybody trying to reduce and control weight wants fast results.
A book so big is not practical. Author should review and condense it, probably to less than half.
Great Book.......2007-06-04
This book taught me a lot of things about my body. I was never aware of my blood sugar levels, but now I recognize feelings I've always had - shaky, irritable - as low blood sugar. I've totally changed my diet b/c of this book, and I'm losing weight without being hungry. I'm sending my copy to a friend, and I've been telling a lot of people about it.
I really only read the first half or so. It gets a little repetitive, which is fine. That's the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars. You'll hit a section that appeals to your way of thinking. The message is the same throughout. It's not breathtaking, but it's full of staistics and information that will change the way you think. e.g. most Americans only get half the recommended amount of fiber in their diets.
I feel like reducing high glycemic index foods has ton a lot for me. I had a chronic cold/sinus infection for over 6 months that is gone. I feel more clear-headed. I'm able to resist my cravings for sweets, which is a big deal to me.
Get this book! It will turn your attitude around, and change your body and your life.

The PTSD Workbook.......2007-09-02
I think it is a helpful tool for people who suffer from PTSD like myself.
Excellent Self-Help Resource.......2007-08-10
Do you suffer from PTSD or other effects of traumatic events? Are you a therapist who treats trauma survivors? Are you involved in a self-help group for trauma victims? This book will help trauma survivors overcome traumatic stress through a variety of useful exercises, questionnaires, journaling, and more. I've recommended this book to several patients and we've worked through many of the processes in partnership, since frequently working these exercises without the assistance of a therapist can be emotionally challenging. While the information is excellent in itself, I prefer to combine it with therapeutic techniques not covered in the book. Fred P. Gallo, PhD, author of Energy Tapping for Trauma: Rapid Relief from Post-Traumatic Stress Using Energy Psychology
Works well alongside therapy.......2007-07-29
I had been through therapy a few years back for a childhood trauma and thought I had put those things behind me. When they popped back up again, I found this book. Because I had been through therapy before, I was able to go through the book alone without any difficulty and with great success. It's well written, has great supports written into it if you've had the background of therapy. I wouldn't recommend it if you have never had a therapist. You do need the safety net of a therapist if you have ever had flashbacks happen to you. They can be a scary thing to go through. The part on triggers was extremely helpful, and enabled me to determine what was triggering my episodes, which actually recovered memories I didn't even realize were bothering me, which lead to more healing. The book is written so that all parts aren't applicable to everyone, but that's the joy of it. For a trauma victim, it's a keeper, because there are parts you use now, and there are parts you may use later. It's set up to be used in pieces, not from cover to cover. It's a great discovery tool. Some memories may not seem like they're worth discovering, but some are. When they had us set up an imaginary safe pace in our minds to go to when things got scary, and asked who was there, I realized I always felt the safest when my grandfather was around, who died in 1991. I dug out a picture of him and put it up in my hallway. This book is definitely my best purchase.
Finally being validated.......2007-07-21
In Dec 2 2002 I was working with fire & police-I had a horrendeous accident I remember going to the trauma room doors and see alot of my coworkers but not remembering why I was there. I hadthe worst headache I had ever had but could not feel my legs or arms from my neck down. I was also left with transient blindness. They told me that boxes of copy paper had fallen on my head neck back and legs. I prayed for my LOrd to take me home. My husband and friends came by and prayed for me. I left the hospital in a very deep depression. A friend told me about the PTSD workbook. I would study and try to research this book-plus go to my counseling sessions. It has really helped.
It's okay . . ........2007-06-26
This workbook is useful for creating handouts and generating ideas. However, it is inadequate as a treatment program in and of itself. That being said, I doubt the author meant it to be used in that manner. Overall, if you work with patients struggling with trauma, this will make a useful addition to your library.

It would be nice to have pediatricians at your beck and call for every cough and wheeze, but the era of house visits is past. When the weather's raw and your child's in pain, start with your reference shelf. Donald Schiff and Steven Shelov have arranged the contents of the Guide to Your Child's Symptoms by the child's age: you'll find symptom guides from baby's colic, diarrhea, and spitting up to your adolescent's anxiety, depression, and skin problems. For each symptom, there's a description of usual causes, a chart of questions to consider, and what action to take. There's also an illustrated "First-Aid Manual." Guide to Your Child's Symptoms is a first-rate resource that explains when bed rest will do and when to get on the phone to your pediatrician.
Book Description
When an infant or small child is ill, it is often very difficult for a parent to understand or diagnose the nature of the problem. Since babies can't articulate what ails them, in most cases all a parent has to go on is the symptom that the child exhibits.
The American Academy of Pediatrics Guide to Your Child's Symptoms has been prepared by a team of the country's best pediatricians to enable a parent to quickly identify a symptom, learn its possible cause, and determine how best to proceed, whether it's taking action at home or calling the pediatrician immediately. The symptoms are listed alphabetically, and the text and illustrations that accompany each one are arranged in easy-to-follow charts. Unlike most child-care and parenting books, which are dense and text-heavy, this book lets a parent quickly assess the problem and decide what needs to be done for the child. The first of the book covers the 100 or so most common symptoms in A-Z format. The second part is an illustrated first-aid manual.
The American Academy of Pediatrics is the most respected authority on child health in America, and the
Guide to Your Child's Symptoms is an essential family reference that belongs in every household.

Fantastic Baby Shower gift! Wonderful book.......2007-05-21
A great all-around, general reference for babycare & childcare. Excellent baby shower gift - most pregnant women get too many baby clothes, stuffed animals, blankets and other useless gifts, but what parents need is good, sensible child care books. This is a good start for parents to have, and they can add specialty books about co-sleeping, or sleep-training, or discipline, and use the this AAP book to compare different solutions to parenting challenges.
Life Saver.......2006-02-12
I love, love, love this book. I have used this book more times than I can count. I highly recommend this one. If you have children buy it!
Great reference book!.......2005-11-18
This book is easy to use and addresses topics easily and concisely. It's a great resource to refer to when you don't have a true emergency and don't want to call your doctor's office for every issue that arises with your child.
Book Description
The classic internal medicine manual for students and residents! This handy guide addresses physical examination techniques and procedures while providing a catalog of clinical findings resulting from the physical examination. Thoroughly reorganized, the Eighth Edition of DeGowin’s Diagnostic Examination features a more user-friendly, easy-access format than previous editions.
Customer Reviews:
Carpal Navicular = Scaphoid.......2007-07-12
I can understand why Sonia said what she did, as I have seen "scaphoid" used more often. However, "navicular" is not wrong. Per Gray's Anatomy etc., this most commonly fractured wrist bone is indeed sometimes referred to as "navicular" or "carpal navicular" in the literature. I do not understand why she feels the book is "riddled with errors". If so, I'd like them pointed out or be referred to errata for it. It's a thorough, highly educational but portable resource.
Riddled with mistakes!.......2007-03-19
I was surprised at the number of mistakes in the book. For example, the wrist diagram (and text) mislabeled the scaphoid bone as the navicular bone. Now this may seem like a little mistake, but the scaphoid is the bone most often fractured in the wrist. Just try telling your attending that you patient fractured their navicular bone... he or she will laugh at you! Any undergrad human anatomy student should catch this mistake! I was hoping the physical exams were more complete. Some common exams were left out of the book. I concur with the reviewer that Bates or Mosby should be used first. This way, you won't look stupid in front of an attending.
DeGowin's Diagnostic Examination.......2007-02-16
This book is a good resource. It was recommended to me by NP.
thanks
A "Must Have".......2006-09-30
This is a great reference book to have in your library. I use it almost every day. Very well organized and complete.
Must have for physician.......2006-09-26
This was my preferred physical exam test. Use Bates as a quick intro, then use DeGowin to understand the physiology and learn the eponyms. If you read this, you can definately impress on internal medicine rounds. Classic classic classic. The next book to get would be Sapira's. After you read that, you'll be the "Classic" physician with superb diagnostic skills.
DeGowin isn't for everyone though, so remember....When Degowin gets tough, the tough master Bate's.
Book Description
Easily accessible and heavily illustrated, this complete guide to diagnosis in Chinese Medicine places an emphasis on "real world" issues. Focusing on clear interpretations of signs and symptoms, it addresses the practice beyond the theory and leads readers through both basic and sophisticated levels of diagnostic interpretation. Since Chinese medicine diagnosis relies on a subtle appraisal of a patient's disharmony, many factors beyond traditional Western symptoms are considered, including a patient's voice, the absence of thirst, feeling hot or cold, the patient's smell, tone of voice, and glitter of eyes. This practical resource helps readers carefully interpret of a range of nuances.
Customer Reviews:
Traditional Chinese Medicine.......2007-02-08
I found this to be an outstanding text. It is the most complete works on traditional Chinese medical diagnosis that I have seen on the market. I would recommend this book to anyone who needs a complete overview of the subject matter.
Excellent TCM Source.......2005-03-27
This is an excellent book for TCM practitioners. It covers a wide variety of diagnostic techniques all included in one book (rather than having to buy 20 short books with similar info). From face diagnosis, to nail diagnosis, to in depth pattern recognition (for thin necks to swollen ears to stomach aches), Maciocia has included it all. I found the part about using palm lines to show tendencies towards certain types of diseases very interesting. There are colour plates in the back of the book that show examples of body type, tongues, and skin conditions.
The only problem I see is that it can be a little hard to find what you are looking for until you get used to using the book. With all of the info covered, Maciocia included a "How to use this book" section in the begining to help with that.

Finally!.......2007-09-23
I am thankful to Dr. Lee. My own, trusted gyne turned out to be totally close-minded when I began to question him about the negative effects of HRT. He was so quick to put me on synthetic hormones, and I didn't feel good about it. I began to read Dr. Lee and others. I was shocked that my own physician could overlook this current, growing, and vast body of literature about biodentical hormones and not include its study in his treatment of women. Oh well, ladies, we now know that it is up to us! I have now read this and all of Dr. Lee's books, and will continue my self-study with other like authors as the field yields more research. I will also continue my search for a doctor who can assist me (no luck yet!) I have taken myself off HRT, am using biodentical progesterone cream, and felt better quickly! This is the proof in the pudding, isn't it? I continue to read about biodenticals --- and I urge you all to do the same! Don't wait until you are menopausal to learn about hormone balance ... START NOW and get your daughters to the same.
This book changed my life!.......2007-04-29
It's too bad Dr Lee is no longer alive, because I'd like to shake his hand and thank him for all his wonderful work. After some very bad experiences with artificial hormones that made me extremely ill, I went in search of an answer that would finally explain what I was experiencing and why I was having the issues I was having. I've had Endometriosis and severe PMDD for many years, but I didn't know I had them as no one could explain the symptoms. Why did I work out 6 days a week and eat less than everyone I knew, yet still not be able to lose weight? It's all in this book! Finally, I get it. Finally, I feel like I have a chance to conquer my body. Out of the window go the unneccesary carbs and artificial hormones, and in comes Progesterone Cream and hormone balance. For gods sake, if you're suffering, buy this book! Everything will suddenly become clear and you will understand why your body is doing what it is doing.
Awesome Book.......2007-03-09
This book is awesome, I started using Progestrone cream and have no more annoying aches and pains, short period without spotting for a week before and after, no more restless legs at night, I sleep 100x better, no longer waking up multiple times a night and feel very calm and laid back even with my four kids (6,4 and twins that are 3. It's amazing. Every women should read this book.
John Lee was a real Doctor not a Pharmaceutical mouthpiece.......2007-02-23
Dr Lee was one of the first male physicians to really stand up for women and get the word out that birth control pills and all the synthetic pharmaceutical hormones are poison and his books are true. Suzanne Somers, Dr Schwarzbein, and others have since come out with more truth. Bioidentical hormones do NOT cause clots, tumors, and the craziness of the HRT hormones...many of which are STILL being tossed at women. You must find a physician who knows his/her stuff. Your hormone creams are compounded just for you by a pharmacy and shipped to you monthly. Transdermal application is liver saving and gets the job done. It requires periodic saliva testing to be sure you are on track. I have been on these creams for 18months am 60 and do 30-40 massages per week. It took 3 years to find a Dr who knew what Bioidentical meant. The first year after the hyesterectomy I could not work..fatigue, joint pain, weight gain, forgetfulness, hot flashes...all gone and I will use these creams for the rest of my life.
It is outrageous how menopausal women are given prozac and told "you're getting older, get used to it". YOU ARE A CONSUMER...your body is more important than your possessions...do your homework and don't tolerate 5th rate medicine...there are knowledgeable physicians out there...Dr Lee was one...check out the new website [...]
My Dr proved to be a total jerk...yes JERK...he gives ALL his patients..all sizes.. the same amount of synthetic hormones..when I questionned the logic in that, his response was "well, you can take it or not" once he does his female castration he knows you can't be a source of any more money and he could care less..AND HE IS NOT ALONE..hysterectomies are BIG business! You have to do your homework!!!!
Read Dr Lee's books..and when you get sorted out, drag your husband in and get him sorted out...they have the same problems..Viagra is not the answer....GOOD LUCK!!
Please Be Careful - I Learned The Hard Way.......2007-02-03
Bio-identical hormones are not all they are cracked up to be. They have serious, dangerous impacts on the human body. Please, if you are going to try these, do your homework first. A growing number of women are experiencing lethal side effects. Some don't make it out the other side. I am one of the lucky ones - I survived the blood clots in my legs and two near-fatal, year-long illnesses connected with use of "natural" progesterone. Since that time, I have been contacted by scores of women who have suffered due to use of these hormones. I hope this information will be helpful to someone else, too. Please, safeguard your health - no one else is going to do it for you.

Best book for Parents.......2007-10-04
This book is so great. I have used it alot. I think it has saved us from many unnecessary trips to the Dr. It has all the right answers and what to do for injuries or illnesses. It is now a standard baby shower gift from me.
Packed with useful information.......2007-08-10
I bought this book after reading several reviews and have been pleased with what I have read so far. There is so much information, which is a plus. I will more than likely only read certain pages when my child's health pertains to that particular subject. Would recommend as a sole source for a new parent.
If an "Instruction Manual" exists for kids, this is IT!.......2007-06-12
This book is an ESSENTIAL reference guide for all parents, grandparents and caregivers. A friend of mine who is a pediatrician recommended this book when I asked her what her favorite child care book was. It gives the straight nuts and bolts of every issue that could arise with your child, from colic to fevers to jellyfish stings(!)
The book has come through for me so many times when I have had questions - is this serious, should I call the doctor now or in the morning? What is that RASH? Why is my infant making that wierd noise? As someone else said in another review, it's tuly like having a pediatrician on speed-dial.
My only sticking point with recommending it is the advice on child rearing, which I believe should allow for more grey areas than the black and white answers Dr. Schmitt provides. I agreed with many of his points. His "How to Spoil a Child" bulleted list is hilarious, and spot on. Likewise his advice on how to curtail tantrums.
But there were a few things that we definitely did not see eye to eye on (ex: vegetables are NOT "overrated" in my opinion, and darnit my kid's gonna eat 'em!) Those of you who are fans of co-sleeping may not like his sleep advice. Another reviewer called these "cultural differences," and I agree the book does not really take them into account. Take this advice with a grain of salt and go with your gut.
But if your kid just vomited and then went back outside to play like he was fine, leaving you a little puzzled and panicked about what to do, this book is for you. And get a copy for the grandparents' house, too.
Great for the whole family.......2007-05-26
This is the best medical guide I found for my child. I use it for my husband and me too. Efficiently written, it gets to the point so you can find the information you need quickly, which is important when your child is sick. It is very thorough and has covered every topic I've needed.
A Must Have.......2007-05-21
I have brought 8 or 9 copies of this book and given them as gifts to new moms. They all have found the book useful, especially the first time breast feeding moms. The book was recommended to me when I had my daughter and it helped me so much. My daughter is now 3 and most recently with the allergy season upon us, I foud myself looking up the treatment and dosage for itchy and runny noses.

A Huge Help!!.......2007-05-01
This book helped me to realize that I was not crazy. I was in a car accident in 2006 where I had to helplessly watch my friend die right in front of me. I was not injured in the wreck which caused me lots of guilt. I thought my life was falling apart until I saw a therapist and a psychiatrist and learned that I was suffering from PTSD. I am still suffering from PTSD but this book is teaching me that I am not the only person who has ever gone through this and that I just might get better from this. I keep this book beside my bed and read it every night. With this book and continued therapy and medication, I hope to be able to live life again some day.
Susan Ashley, Ph.D. Author of The ADD and ADHD Answer Book.......2005-10-08
As clinical and forensic psychologist I use this book in my practice with my clients who have experienced a trauma and are suffering from PTSD. This book is an excellent tool to educate trauma survivors about the symptoms they are experiencing and gives step by step tools and lessons to help overcome the symptoms of PTSD. After one experiences a trauma the psychological symptoms that come afterwards, often times months afterwards, can make the person feel as if they are going crazy. This book helps the trauma victim understand the predictable symptoms, the reason they exist and what to do to cope and eventually overcome them. This book helps trauma victims move from victim to survivor.

I found this book to be easy to read and written in plain english. It will be a great source of information for my clients. It is not always easy to find a text that is user friendly for most levels. The author does a wonderful job incorporating all of the information in a way that is not intimidating to the average person.
From A Survivor..........2005-07-06
I survived sexual trauma and this book is a wonderful way to work through the pain, anger, and sorrow. It is not a quick fix book and you will be forced to deal with scary issues. A great read and very helpful!
Great book for learning about PTSD/ if you been frieghtened.......2004-10-25
I suggest the PTSD workbook for treatment, though. It is the best psychological self-help book I have ever read. We all have some degree of PTSD.
