Customer Reviews:
This book changed my life........2007-07-16
I know lots of people say that about things, that they change their lives, and it sounds hokey. In this case, however, it's true. I have been taking medication for my always borderline high blood pressure for the last 5 or 6 years and, for the past year or so, feeling exhausted all of the time. Not to mention a host of other symptoms that go along with the "Hitting the Wall" state as Dr. Hanley calls it. In 2 weeks of following her suggestions, which include diet changes (One of her instructions is "Eat, eat, eat, all day long."), relaxation, rest and a number of other things, my blood pressure is low enough that my doctor took me off of my medication. I couldn't believe it! I also have more energy and am sleeping better. I would recommend this book to anyone who's feeling exhausted or burnt out.
Great information and easy to understand.......2007-01-10
I think we all know that eating processed junk food is bad, but I have never seen the medical reasons described so well and in such a simple matter. I blazed through the first half of the book day one and rushed out to whole foods to stock up on REAL food. I trashed all of the processed junk in my cabinets and am making real progress in eliminating all of the poison from my life. I highly reccomend the protein power shakes mentioned in the book and drink them religiously everyday!
What a Relief.......2007-01-10
to finally find someone who understands how exhuasted and stressed out I've become. For years the doctors have said I'm fine, probably depressed. BUT I WASN'T - I have been genuinely tired and this book finally showed me the reason. I would highly recommend it to anyone who is having trouble getting the right diagnosis. It has invaluable advice and recommendations in it.
Very helpful for what ails me........2006-08-16
I found the book to be very detailed in my physiological problems! The approach to healing is one that I as a lay person interested in getting well can do without relying on medical intervention. In fact, there is alot of information to help avoid medical intervention (which I have found to be a contributor to my failing health).
Good concepts, but unrealistic solutions.......2004-02-29
Hanley and Deville offer some good tools for thinking about our driven pace of life, and the crutches that we use to keep it up. They tell us to get rid of these crutches, both the physical--caffeine, sugar, etc., and the mental--"I must do better," "I'm not good enough." Those who follow their advice will probably find themselves more relaxed, balanced, and at peace with the world.
But some of the concrete solutions that they offer are downright unrealistic, if not dangerous. For example, taking human growth hormone?! Isn't HGH among the substances banned for athletes? And GABA? Even those who have sworn off conventional medicine might pause to consider that doctors don't prescribe those brain- and body-tinkering chemicals in droves, and for a good reason. The range of hormones, amino acids, and natural herbs form a formidable medicine cabinet and would surely deplete the average person's pocketbook.
My advice: read it, think about it, and certainly follow the concepts, but don't take it all too seriously.

Book Description
Sick and Tired of Being Sick and Tired moves beyond the depiction of African Americans as mere recipients of aid or as victims of neglect and highlights the ways black health activists created public health programs and influenced public policy at every opportunity. Smith also sheds new light on the infamous Tuskegee syphilis experiment by situating it within the context of black public health activity, reminding us that public health work had oppressive as well as progressive consequences.

Customer Reviews:
Unrelated to the neuroimmune disorder ME/CFS.......2005-05-09
Although there is some general advice of value in this book, like many other books on mere tiredness or undifferentiated fatigue, it has no relationship to the specific profound postexertionalfatigue of the neuroimmune brain disorder of chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) WHO ICD-10 G93.3 page 494.
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is an incurable, incapacitating, multisystem chronic illness entirely unrelated to the tiredness of a busy life. Biomedical research studies on patients with this neuroimmune disorder show that the recovery rate for patients medically diagnosed with this nonpsychiatric neurological disorder is four percent. Doctors treating patients medically diagnosed with CFS describe them are more funtionally ill than cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, patients with HIV, Type 2 diabetes and another neurological disorder MS.
Medically documented abnormalities are found in the brain, the heart and circulatory systems of patients Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
On the other hand, undifferentiated chronic fatigue is just one symptom in many severe and not so severe diseases. It is entirely unrelated to the specific postexertional fatigue unrelieved by rest that is merely one part of the complex and unique pattern of signs and symptoms found in the neuroimmune disorder chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS).
Patients experiencing profound exhaustion of new onset, exacerbated by activity, unrelieved by rest, with sore throat, memory and concentration problems, unrefreshing sleep, enlarged lymph glands, etc. should see a qualified medical physician.
clear and concise.......2004-02-06
This book is a very good read for anyone suffering from fatigue or brain fog because it the author is very specific about the most common causes of fatigue. He substantiates his advice with scientific data and more importanly with treatment results that he has wittnessed. None of his advice is controversialor new wave. He relays all of the time tested proven scientific ways to eliminate fatigue and rejuvenate your body.
Very Helpful.......2000-05-25
Being someone who has CFS, this book was very helpful in dealing with it. It taught me many things to try to overcome CFS. The book was easy to read, not technical like other "medical", "self-help" books. If you have CFS or just low energy, I would recommend this book to you and to your loved ones.

Coping with Prednisone (and Other Cortisone-Related Medicines): It May Work Miracles, but How Do You Handle the Side Effects?
ASIN: 0595394760 |
Book Description
Your life couldn't be more perfect than it is right now. You are young and, as far as you know, healthy. You are happily committed to your better half, and the two of you are about to be parents for the very first time. Elated by your dreams for the future, your anticipations elevate to the point you feel untouchable. You are on top of the world and no one can bribe you to come down. If only life stayed that consistent. If only life was really that kind. If only you were as untouchable as you think you are. Vasculitis: Sick and Tired of Being Sick and Tired is a candid, humorous, straightforward, no-nonsense autobiography written by first-time author, Sheri Lyn Schwar. Shortly after giving birth to her daughter, the world Sheri arrogantly stood on started to give way, crumbling beneath her, whisking her down an avalanche of health troubles. Told she may die of a rare autoimmune disease, a type of Vasculitis called Takayasu's Arteritis, Sheri refuses to let her disease define her. If you've ever been faced with a potentially life-threatening disease, you will find reassurance, comfort, vindication, validation and plenty of laughs within these pages.

Coping With Vasculitis.......2007-07-10
Since my son was only 3 years old both he and I have suffered from a deadly form of vasculitis, Polyarteritis Nodosa. We both became ill in the year 1983, which makes it almost 24 years now that we have both had vasculitis. It has been a deeply life-changing experience for my son & I -- and for our wonderful extended family and supportive group of friends & medical caregivers.
As Ms. Schwar so eloquently describes in writing of her own experiences, we also made a decision to live our lives in the most positive manner possible, seeking to do what we have called "live well." Much like Ms. Schwar, who "decided to turn her back to death's door in favor of feeling hope and seeing the smile in her daughter's eyes every day," we gradually learned to look on the experience of illness as an opportunity to grow spiritually, to become better human beings -- to the point, where today, now that my son has grown to become a fine man; and that I, along with my immediate family have become far more understanding & aware -- I finally have the strength and understanding to write a book myself, the manuscript now almost complete.
My hope is that by writing a book about our experience that it may help others suffering from vasculitis, Polyarteritis Nodosa, or any other chronic illness to live well with their disease.
Thanks to Ms. Schwar for the inspiration she has given to patients, physicians, writers and others dealing with vasculitis and chronic illness.
Best To All,
BJ Seal
COPING WITH TA THROUGH THIS BOOK.......2007-06-18
It is difficult enough for anyone to be diagnosed with this rare disease called TA and knowing that there is a resource out there to help us through this baffling condition, makes me more calm and gives me more strength to live. What Sheri, the author did in writing this book is that she has paved the way to better understand the uniqueness of this disease. Her title of the book "sick and tired of being sick and tired" aptly describes the process of fatigue, lack of energy, pain, not feeling well etc. that all TA sufferers go through and whose symptoms go undetected or misdiagnosed for years, only to be found out in the later stages of the disease. This book helped me a lot in coping with TA and living life everyday in a positive light.
An answer to prayer.......2007-06-13
This book is a must read for anyone that suffers from TA or any disease that is rare. It helps to know that you are not crazy or alone in the suffering that you and your family go through. Sherri has been through hell and makes you laugh as she tells you some of the trials she has gone through coping with this disease. Everyone in the family of a TA patient should read this book.It is wonderful and gives you hope to keep on keeping on!!!!
Great book!!.......2007-06-13
I also suffer from Takayasu's Arteritis and this book helped a lot! Schwar's casual and often humorous view of her life threatening disease, is inspirational and "down-right entertaining!" She tells it like it is, but doesn't bore you with too much technical/medical information.
I live in a small town, so to have access to more information about TA was highly beneficial for me. If you know anyone with a chronic disease, this book is great!
You Must Read This Book!.......2007-06-13
This woman is dear to my heart. She has lived through soooo much and has told all of us about it. She has made me see how blessed I am to have my life and I never take that for granted.
Sheri has the courage and strength of many. She is a true and lovely spirit. I am so blessed to have her in my life. I am so blssed to have read this book.
Buy it and read it, it will change your life!

Book Description
The great Christian doctrines are worth thinking through for ourselves. That's why Gordon Lewis has provided this concise and complete survey of the major truths of the Christian faith. But rather than just telling us what he has discovered in Scripture, he offers a theological workbook that helps us explore the evidence itself and to draw our own conclusions. He has organized the material around the main themes of God, Christ, the Holy Spirit, man, creation, the church and the end times. This unique text has been used by over 100,000 students of the Bible over the last two decades in the classroom, in the home and in the church. Its enduring quality continues to make it a valuable tool for all who want to develop a systematic theology for themselves.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Doctrinal Workbook!.......2001-08-22
Students of the Bible would do well to begin their theological journey here. It's amazing how much clarity the Scriptures give to the commentaries! My friends and I used this book as a study guide for a summer Bible study a few years ago and we were outright shocked at the depth of discussion we had each week as well as the nagging questions that were answered from Scripture. If you want to search the Scriptures for answers to questions such as these - "Is God one, many or triune?" "Do all men know God's redemptive love and saving grace?" and "How did Christ atone for man's sin?" get this guide. Lewis poses difficult doctrinal questions and allows the student to develop his or her own beliefs by studying the given Scripture references. This means your doctrine will come directly from God's Word and not from another's take on it. Self-discovery is the most effective of all learning styles because the answers gained are lodged in the deepest part of the mind. Use this book if you really want to gain a working knowledge of doctrine as opposed to just a cursory familiarity with it.
Good training for dealing with everyday skeptics.......2000-07-01
Being a high school student I very often get asked questions such as "Why would Jesus be the only way to God?" or "Get with the times girl! Jesus was almost 2000 years ago!" or "Oh yes, I'm going to believe in something so many hypocrites claim to believe. sounds like a good plan..whatever!" This book is well designed to help us understand their points of view, and lets us figure out for ourselves what to believe. It helps people when they see we actually have thought about our faith instead of blindly believing
Wonderful means of exploring your faith.......1999-06-17
This book takes you through a step by step exploration of some of the most essential theological questions. It leads you to verses to guide your study, but does not draw conclusions. This is a wonderful study to do individually or as a group at any level of biblical knowlege. I found it thought provoking and challenging.

Customer Reviews:
Best book I have read.......2004-02-21
I thought it was the best book that I had read in a really long time. The day that I received the book in the mail, I started reading it and could not put it down, and 4 hours later I finished.
This is not my normal taste in books, I tend to read romance junk. I found this book interesting. It was easy to read, informative and it immediately grabbed my attention and kept it. It contains part truth, part fiction and part speculation that is combined for a perfect story line. He researched and wrote informatively. Even if you do not have an addiction, you can read this book and understand what this person in the book experienced. I would recommend this book to everyone.
it's a good eye-opener to those who don't know how to start.......2004-02-20
It was borrowed from someone at work and I had to immediately sit down and read it cover to cover. I ordered 10 copies for friends and family. I constantly recommend this book to those struggling with addiction and in deep deep denial. For those stuck in the hell of addiction, it takes powerful and bold writing to get their attention. This book does that. In fairness, this book shows a journey of quitting for the wrong reasons and quitting for the right reasons. Still relevant in today's comprehension of treatment programs. Rarely do addicts check into a 28 day cocoon treatment program and stay clean and sober forever if they haven't learned how to live in the real world with their recovery. The reality described in this book shows that living with the day to day addiction and recovery for the right reasons is paramount to staying clean and sober. It takes bottom of the glass looking up writing to get the reader's attention and that's what Bill does in this book. It's as important today as it was 10 years ago. This is a good read and shakes up your denial in ways most medical-feel good-you can do it too books out there. Those are dangerous books to an addict! His direct writing style is no-nonsene straight at you-which is what is called for in my opinion. Take it from an addict.
same old, same old.......2002-03-08
To anyone who has ever grappled with beating an addiction and moving toward a substance-abuse free, gratifying life, this book will be a terrible disappointment. It is nothing more than one man's recounting of what countless, countless hundreds of thousands of people have experienced in their attempts to free themselves of an addiction and find true peace in life.
The book's main message -- a person must WANT to be well -- before his or her program will truly work -- is probably heard thousands of times a day at AA and NA meetings worldwide.
This book offers no new insights into the recovery process. It is a primer for the uninitiated -- and not a very good one at that! Most introductory books dealing with alcoholism (and/or drug addiction) have a great deal of information about the physical effects of drugs and alcohol. Only then do they go on to discuss emotional and spiritual recovery.

Book Description
Tired of Being Po is author Tangie Bell's story about her escape from poverty and a world where sexual favors and crime held the only promise of a next meal for herself and her children. A high school drop out, Tangie took to the streets and left Shreveport, Louisiana at the age of 18, setting out to find emotional and financial fulfillment. Soon she fell into the dangerous trap of using her body to acquire life's necessities. After years on the streets, now with three children in tow, Bell found herself living at a residential development center for homeless families with children that require residents to work full time and continue their education. One night Tangie woke up from her sleep crying, shaking, and feeling used and abused. She ran outside to commit suicide with hopes to escape the years of poverty she has known all her life. Something happened that night that changed Bell's life forever. Tired of Being Po is a story turned workbook for those caught in a grip of poverty and government assistance who are looking for ways to begin a better future and break out of the poverty cycle. The challenges and pressures of everyday life can be overwhelming, especially when you do not have enough to make ends meet. Worrying about poverty changes nothing but exposing it changes everything. Helping others recognize the trap of relying on government handouts or a life of crime to get by has become a big part of her new life. "I am not a celebrity," she says, but I do have something to say," I am Tired of Being Po.
Download Description

Through her real-life experiences, Bell shares how she exposed the enemy of poverty and let go of government assistance.
