2 out of 5 stars Not as great as I thought.......2004-09-17

From the review I thought this would be a great book to have, but I find it lacking and thin. Many of the suggestion were repeated [...]. I thought this book is more about ideas of words to write, and indeed it has some, but not a lot to choose from.

2 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2002-12-20

I bought this book thinking it would help with my holiday letter writing and a letter I wished to write for a friend who recently married. I was very disappointed in the sparse selection of sample letters and the overabundance of poems and gift ideas. It's not something I'll reach for often.

5 out of 5 stars You NEED this book . ........2002-11-01

Spizman's book of useful tips, hints and resources for anyone who aspires to BE the kind of person who cares and does something about it is really wonderful. I already think I do a pretty good job saying kind and encouraging things to others. This book really gives me ideas and encouragement for doing it. I plan to give copies of this book to many friends. A great and useful resource. Also, her daughter's book, The Thank You Book for Kids is a terrific how to book for young people.
Highly recommended!

I saw this author on The Today Show last year and knew I had to buy this book. The thoughtful words and deeds in this book just add to the perfect present ideas Robyn recommended on Today. After reading this book, I feel assured that my gifts and words will matter most to those who matter most to me.

Book Description

From big cities to farm communities, from office cubicles to hospital wards, from Normandy Beach to Boston's Fenway Park, the contributors to this remarkable volume -- selected from among thousands in a nationwide search -- tell riveting stories about the words that changed their lives forever.

You'll meet a "Plain Jane" from Seattle, whose world was rocked by a passing remark made by her favorite musician, backstage at a concert. You'll hear from the bereaved fiancé of a 9/11 victim, who found hope in a note pinned to a teddy bear. You'll laugh with a beleaguered soccer mom, who reveals the single phrase she never wants to hear again. And your heart will break for a prison inmate, who recalls the one piece of advice he still wishes he took.

In each case, words had made all the difference.

Marlo Thomas has once again tapped into the human spirit, assembling a breathtaking collection of beautiful and inspiring essays about the enduring power of words, and how their impact can last a lifetime. As a follow-up to her 2002 New York Times #1 bestseller, The Right Words at the Right Time, Thomas presents 101 new first-person stories that are at once universal and strikingly personal.

Like the tale of a Gulf War veteran, whose life was transformed by just two words spoken by a young stranger at a Burger King. Or the aimless garage mechanic, who found salvation in a Help Wanted ad. Or the unsuspecting mother of three, who made a heart-warming discovery about her grandmother's "racy past."

As this astonishing anthology proves, the "right words" can come from anywhere -- the pages of a dusty old songbook, the pulpit of a neighborhood church, the wreckage of Ground Zero, a hand-stitched sampler hanging on a wall, and a child's simple expression of love.

The Right Words at the Right Time, Volume 2: Your Turn! is a collection to be read and read again -- a volume that will be cherished both by fans of the original book and anyone who has ever been touched by the startling and life-affirming magic of words.

1 out of 5 stars Target audience: the overprivileged .......2006-09-29

If you're over 50, white and wealthy, this book is for you. If you are someone who has dealt with many of life's hardships, please do not look to this book for inspiration. It is such fluff, I cannot tell you how disappointed I am in it. Nothing profound lies within, it is poorly re-written and, seems to me, a quick way for Thomas to make some money and keep her name out there.

Written by a wealthy older white person, for other wealthy older white people.

P.S. I am white.

5 out of 5 stars "My Take".......2006-07-27

Lovely book. Not only did I enjoy it, but helped support a hospital I feel very strongly about. A good balance to all the terrible things happening in the world. A view of the other side.

5 out of 5 stars The Right Words at the Right Time Volume 2 : Your Turn!.......2006-07-15

This book is a MUST HAVE follow up to the original title; The Right Words at the Right Time. This time around Marlo Thomas has collected stories from every day people like you and me that are touching and heartfelt. They are meant to both inspire and encourage, and they do just that. I highly recommend this book as well as the original.

5 out of 5 stars The Right Words at the Right Time.......2006-07-14

Excellent book! It's a good feeling book, and knowing that the proceeds support St. Jude's Hospital makes it even better.

3 out of 5 stars Transforming Words For And From Us.......2006-07-05

"Volume 2" is a sequel to Marlo Thomas' 2002 New York Times Best Selling "The Right Words at the Right Time." Thomas' best seller featured famous, successful people who wrote about the words that changed their lives.

Thomas in "Volume 2" features 101 people from all walks of life (including a prisoner) who, as in the first book, share their stories about the words that changed their lives. These stories were solicited by Parade Magazine from its readers who championed Thomas' first book.

These books were written to show how the right words can transform as they challenge us at a crossroads, helping us through times of sorrow, and calling us to action.

While there are many inspiring stories, I did not find this book as inspirational as the first. Nevertheless, Thomas does well in prompting each of us to think about those words that came to us at the "right time," and in reminding us that we, too, can play a critical role in another's life - when they need the "Right Words at the Right Time."

5 out of 5 stars The Right Words at the Right Time.......2006-07-15

I heard about this book through the grapevine. I checked it out from the library to read it and was so blown away that I then purchased it. Marlo Thomas has put together a touching as well as entertaining collection of short stories from celebrities, sports figures, politicians, etc. with words that will touch and encourage you. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Perfectly Inspirational.......2006-07-13

Marlo Thomas has written a wonderfully inspiring piece of art!! If you're looking to be inspired by people, both great and small, to get a glimpse into the hearts, lives and even pain of those you've admired throughout the years, this is a MUST-read. As I read the personal stories of changed lives through the power of simply spoken words, it made me aware of how the power of words can be used as a catalyst to tear down or build up. Can't wait to buy Volume 2!

4 out of 5 stars A Book to Past On To Friends.......2005-04-23

I really enjoyed reading this book. For someone who does not enjoy long chapters but enjoys listening other people's experiences and wise thought, I was thoroughly impressed. After my first purchase, I ended up buying 2 more copies of this books in hopes of giving them to close friends as a nice birthday present. Afterall, it's what's inside a book that counts.

5 out of 5 stars She writes the right words.......2005-02-15

Ms. Thomas has collected an inspiring, entertaining, and informative selection of stories representing pivotal moments in the lives of famous people. The reader can learn just what triggered these people to pursue their goals...and hopefully understand that it can be the smallest of things that propels a person forward.
This book reminds us that you can never tell when or from where inspiration may come. It also reminds the reader of the old expression, "Never take away someone's hope. It might be all that they have." James Green, author of "If There's One Thing I've Learned."

5 out of 5 stars Who knew I would love this book?!.......2004-01-26

To the few reviewers of this book who gave it a negative rating:

what's wrong with you?! You CLEARLY missed this point of this gem of a publication.

I was browsing around the bookstore at the local mall just passing time while my eye glasses were being repaired. I was standing near the bestsellers section, when for no particular reason, this book's cover caught my eye. I picked up a copy, glanced at it, flipped the pages, then discarded it back on the shelf and thought, uhgg, one of those chicken-soup, pseudo-inspirational, publications; you know, a book version of a "chick flick"...ah, no thanks. Then, and maybe it was the fact that I noticed the NY Times bestseller band at the top, or maybe the sincerity of Marlo's expression -- I don't know -- but I picked it up, again flipped through the selections until I found a contributor I recognized: Matt Groening. I read his, the another, then got to Mel Brooks..BAM..I was hooked. I've got to admit, the old widsom you can't judge a book by it's cover took on a literal truth in this case. When I glanced at the back cover and saw that all of the royalties of the book go to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, I was instantly sold and proceeded to register to buy it.

The idea for this book and it's ultimate objective are both obvious and genious. Bravo Marlo and Friends!

This isn't literature, no, it's light reading with most entires being 3 or 4 pages; the contributions are from a diverse collection of musicians, actors, activists, entertainers, doctors, CEOs, journalists, politicians, direcors, writers, politicians, artists, and other people who are well known because of the success they've attained.

But the entries from the likes of Sidney Portier, Jay Leno,
and Itzhak Perlman are golden nuggets; personal experiences
of pivitol points in these contributors lives and given up in the name of charity -- awesome!

There are lessons and wisdoms in this book you can bank on. To say this book is replete with inspiration and would be an understatement. Best of all, you can read an entry in like 2 minutes!

If you don't buy this book, it's your loss.

5 out of 5 stars Robbie Kaplan Says It Well.......2005-11-16

Divorce. Scandal. Suicide. So many awkward times leave you speechless -- or worse fearing you'll say the wrong thing. Fortunately, Kaplan's kind yet no-nonsense book gives you the power to speak -- and help those you love when they're hurting. It's a must-read for tough times.

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Words.......2005-11-16

This book is a phenomenal guide to finding the perfect words when you want to provide support in the ideal way. As we all know, some situations require a careful approach, some people have delicate sensitivities, and some of life's trials are beyond our comprehension. Especially with loved ones often living so far away, your words may be all you can give. In professional settings where hugs are not appropriate or natural, it's so important to know what to say and how to say it. Robbie Kaplan's book provides the right words, in the perfect way, so that you can be the kind of friend or relative, supportive colleague or neighbor, that you want to be. Highly recommended for all, since the best thing we can do for the people we love is support them...and words are what stay with us the longest.

5 out of 5 stars A Practical Tool.......2005-01-11

For someone working in the world of non-profits and charities, I found this book a helpful tool in dealing with many situations where you want to offer comfort to people who are facing difficult or challenging circumstances. The book offers helpful advice, examples and even sample letters for a wide variety of situations. Robbie Miller Kaplan uses her own experiences as well as consultations with many professionals to create a thoughtfull resource for anyone working in the helping professions.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Resource!.......2005-01-09

Unfortunately, troubling times come up for people close to us all the time and when you least expect it. This is a great resource book to have for those unexpected occasions when you're caught off-guard and aren't sure how best to help your friend who is going through a difficult ordeal. It's scary to think that you might say or do the wrong thing when someone close to you is suffering, so this book gives that reassurance we're all looking for.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2004-11-04

Robbie Miller Kaplan writes kindly about her personal ordeal in a way that is useful and informative to those of us who have not faced tragedy up close and personal. The book allows you to gather words and be prepared to communicate at times when words mandate great finesse. In addition to words the book facilitates what etiquette to exercise in delicate situations ranging across a multiple spectrum of possibilities to include terrorism. I feel this book is a must have and a keeper for sure.

    Book Description

For the past twenty-five years Americans have relied on Pulitzer Prize-winning wordsmith William Safire for their weekly dose of linguistic illumination in The New York Times Magazine's column "On Language" -- one of the most popular features of the magazine and a Sunday-morning staple for innumerable fans. He is the most widely read writer on the English language today.

Safire is the guru of contemporary vocabulary, speech, language, usage and writing. Dedicated and disputatious readers itch to pick up each column and respond to the week's linguistic wisdom with a gotcha letter to the Times. The Right Word in the Right Place at the Right Time marks the publication of Safire's sixteenth book on language. This collection is a classic to be read, re-read, enjoyed and fought over. Fans, critics and fellow linguists wait with bated (from the French abattre "to beat down") breath for each new anthology -- and, like its predecessors, this one is bound to satisfy and delight.

Safire finds fodder for his columns in politics and current events, as well as in science, technology, entertainment and daily life. The self-proclaimed card-carrying language maven and pop grammarian is not above tackling his own linguistic blunders as he detects language trends and tracks words, phrases and clichés to their source. Scholarly, entertaining and thoughtful, Safire's critical observations about language and slanguage are at once provocative and enlightening.

Safire is America's go-to guy when it comes to language, and he has included sharp and passionately opinionated letters from readers across the English-speaking world who have been unable to resist picking up a pen to put the maven himself in his place or to offer alternate interpretations, additional examples, amusing anecdotes or just props.

The Right Word in the Right Place at the Right Time is a fascinating, learned and piquant look at the oddities and foibles that find their way into the English language. Exposing linguistic hooey and rigamarole and filled with Safire's trademark wisdom, this book has a place on the desk or bedside table of all who share his profound love of the English language -- as well as his penchant for asking "What does that mean?" Or, "Wassat?"

This new collection is sure to delight readers, writers and word lovers everywhere and spark the interest of anyone who has ever wondered, "Where did the phrase 'brazen hussy' come from?"

    4 out of 5 stars clear and concise,abundant examples.......2005-11-03

One of my favourite reference of the language. While it is clear and concise, the book does not rush into yes-or-no conclusions in dealing with ambiguities or controversies. It states both the stances of puritans and iconoclausts of the grammar rules with abundant real life examples so that the users can decide for themselves. Clear cut inappropriate examples are marked with crosses, ambiguous usages with single question marks(?) and highly doubtful ones with double question marks(??). Simple language, easy to understand.

4 out of 5 stars Targeted at people living in Japan rather than tourists.......1998-11-16

Unlike most books which seem aimed at classroom study or tourists, it is aimed at people who will be living in Japan.

It may also be of interest because of the customs described associated with weddings, funerals, gift-giving, and the like.

        Book Description

The workers who migrate from Lesotho to the mines and cities of neighboring South Africa have developed a rich genre of sung oral poetry—word music—that focuses on the experiences of migrant life. This music provides a culturally reflexive and consciously artistic account of what it is to be a migrant or part of a migrant's life. It reveals the relationship between these Basotho workers and the local and South African powers that be, the "cannibals" who live off of the workers' labor. David Coplan presents a moving collection of material that for the first time reveals the expressive genius of these tenacious but disenfranchised people.

Coplan discusses every aspect of the Basotho musical literature, taking into account historical conditions, political dynamics, and social forces as well as the styles, artistry, and occasions of performance. He engages the postmodern challenge to decolonize our representation of the ethnographic subject and demonstrates how performance formulates local knowledge and communicates its shared understandings.

Complete with transcriptions of full male and female performances, this book develops a theoretical and methodological framework crucial to anyone seeking to understand the relationship between orality and literacy in the context of performance. This work is an important contribution to South African studies, to ethnomusicology and anthropology, and to performance studies in general.

5 out of 5 stars A Must for Mothers and Daughters.......2007-10-06

A perfect book for mothers and daughters to share. This book is just what women need to express their feelings in an honest, eloquent and to the point manner without emotion or regret.

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Gift.......2007-09-14

Looking for the perfect gift to give someone? "The Gift of Words" deserves your attention. This book says it all perfectly, and for every uncomfortable situation. I recommend one for yourself and one to share with friends and family. The best "How To" you'll read.

5 out of 5 stars This Book is Full of Great Advice!.......2007-09-05

Everyone should have a copy of this book near at hand. The advice is smart, yet simple. I actually used the words in Anne's book to approach a person at work I was having a problem with, and the words worked perfectly! We get along great now. I keep finding situations that come up where the advice works. I'm going to give it as a gift to family and friends. Everyone will find a good use for The Gift of Words. Also, the original art is a nice touch.

        5 out of 5 stars What a gift!.......2007-08-22

When I get stressed, I overexplain things. It can cause me to come across as weak and/or insincere. Anne's book gave me specific language to use in specific situations so I feel strong in those situations. I have already memorized and found use for the words to get someone's undivided attention and how to turn down a solicitation for money. It works. And I've ordered more for Xmas gifts. It doesn't hurt that the price is right.

        5 out of 5 stars What a great gift........2007-08-20

This is a great book! For those of us who routinely have a case of 'Foot in Mouth' problem, this book provides a great guide for an alternative choice of words for all sorts of situations applicable to everyday life.
