New edition is even better .......2007-10-05
It is no surprise that the Fifth Edition of this unique medical reference is better than ever. For those who are new to this authoritative tome, you will immediately notice how well it is organized to help those in an emergency effectively find the answers they need. The chapters cover Mountain Medicine, Cold and Heat, Burns, Fire and Radiation, Rescue and Survival, Injuries and Medical Intervention, Animals Insects and Zoonoses, Plants, Food and Water, Marine Medicine, Travel and Environmental Hazards, Equipment, Special Populations (issue related to children and the elderly) and the Wilderness.
Every subject is carefully explained so the medical injuries surrounding the subject can be identified and understood in context and with greater detail. For example, to understand how to rescue someone from an avalanche, the reader must understand how avalanches are formed. The book also goes into detail on rescue equipment and their correct use as well as proper self and organized rescues before discussing medical treatments for avalanche victims.
The bulk of the book consists of chapters regarding various injuries and conditions encompassing symptomology, description diagnostic techniques (tests and such) that can be employed, treatment options, and the range of expected prognoses--in a nutshell, what is the likely injury, how do we treat it, and what's the outlook in terms of cure and survival.
A wealth of reliable, understandable information is readily accessible primarily targeting the medical professional but also for the lay person accompanied by very helpful illustrations.
The update is most welcome, as the area of wilderness medicine has grown significantly beyond rescue of mountain climbers to the practice of medicine in situations of constrained resource, during times of catastrophe like 9/11 or Katrina and often in appalling conditions. This new edition also identifies new and better treatments of everything from high-altitude pulmonary and cerebral edema to heart stroke.
The PDR for wilderness injuries & related illnesses.......1997-07-25
Foregoing knowledge of the existance of this text was unkown, until it was needed in an emergent situation on site. At that time a stingray injury required our immediate attention. With no previous experience in this kind of injury, the book provided immediate no frills information on treatment, backup care and procedures. After this experience, I carefully examined the text at length and was amazed at the comprehensive nature of the topic that was covered. I would recommend this text to be present in all health care provider libraries and offices, as it is in mine.

Simply the best.......2006-12-20
I teach Wilderness Medical Care to the WFR level and I strongly suggest all our Advanced Wilderness First Aid students buy it, and require all WFR students to have one. These is simply no book that compares to Morrissey's Guide. Personally, I have two...one in my backpack medical kit and one for my bookshelf. If you are a wilderness guide, a SAR team member of just an avid outdoors person, you need this book. (and the training that goes with it.)
Don't leave home without it!
Well written, concise, and waterproof!.......2006-02-23
This little book should be an essential part of any outdoor activity. Covering both trauma and medical situations in the absence of definitive care the book offers a great overview or refresher to those finding themselves in an emergency situation. Written by those at Wilderness Medical Associates, it is used as a field guide in their wilderness EMT and first responder courses, which are also great!
Don't leave home without this book........2003-06-24
I've trained with Jim Morrissey before and can attest that he is one of the tops in his field. This is a fantastic book to take on wilderness trips or even to keep in your car. For one thing it is small, lightweight and packable. Second, the medical guidelines are clear and easy to follow. I could imagine pulling this book out in any number of medical emergencies, both small and large. It's also a good refresher if you need to brush up on procedures. One downside, you will need to make sure you know what certain abbreviations mean if you've never had any exposure to wilderness or emergency medicine. But otherwise, I heartily recommend this book. I wish every backpacker and guide had this book on trips. It would help save a lot of lives.
Wilderness Medical Associates Field Guide.......2000-09-28
"I wish I'd found this refernece years ago. I can't begin to tell you how many medical field guides I've bought over the years. They all end up being text books that are of no use in the field. When I'm dealing with someone with a deep laceration or a broken tooth, I don't have the time or mindset to sit down and read a text. I need to be able to look at the diagrams and charts, figure out what is wrong and what I can do to help while we are miles from civilization. That's what this guide provides. Besides that it's water- and tear-proof. You just can't beat it. I'm going to keep my field guide with me everywhere I go in the backcountry and on the rivers. It's great. It is literally a life saver!
Book Description
This field-guide handbook, based upon Dr. Auerbach's text Wilderness Medicine, 4th Edition, focuses on information that is needed when medical situations present in the wilderness setting. Perfect for the physician on the go, this new 2nd edition includes more chapters and appendixes for an even quicker more complete reference!

Field Guide to Wilderness Medicine.......2000-07-10
This is an excellent condensed version of the full text. It is the only medical field guide I have found that is written for a medical doctor instead of an EMT or paramedic in an austere environment. I am a physician in a military special operations unit and carry it on all deployments, whether in the U.S. or other countries. It is the perfect size to carry with my field gear and trauma pack, and is quick, easy to use, and reccommends very up to date and rapid treatment plans. A must have for all medical professionals practicing in the pre-hospital environment! For medical professionals going to remote locations that are limited by what they can carry on their back, very few texts/guides can be brought along. The solution to this limitation is simple; pack your Sanford, your Pharmacoepia, and THIS BOOK. It is the best text for it's size and weight available.
Excellent condensed version of Auerbach's original text.......1998-12-11
If you consider Auerbach's Wilderness Medicine text to be "The Bible of Outdoor Medicine," then this will be a welcomed addition to your reference library. The fieldguide takes many of the most important topics from the original text(such as high altitude emergencies, envenomations, and trauma management) and paraphrases them just enough to be of benefit to both the weekend outdoor warrior and the expedition medic. I particularly was interested in the various ways to utilize common outdoor gear and improvise traction devices for orthopedic injuries. This book is also great in that it is small enough to fit comfortably in your backpack or glove compartment, readily accessable when needed. I highly recommend adding this book to your home or office library.

What do you do if you're 25 miles into the backcountry and a member of your hiking party develops appendicitis? Or if you're nearing the summit of a 14,000-foot peak and your climbing partner suffers a ruptured cornea from the altitude? If you thought ahead, you'd pull out your copy of Medicine for Mountaineering. This is probably the top book to carry for serious backcountry injuries. There are other titles that cover basic first aid, but not with this book's depth and specificity.
Ten M.D.s with a fondness for wilderness outings contributed to the chapters, and it shows: medical jargon abounds. But don't be intimidated by words like thrombophlebitis or pneumothorax--you might need to know how to treat blood clots in the legs or a ruptured lung. Most of the injuries covered have their origin in high-altitude mishaps, whether it be kidney infections from dehydration or blunt head trauma from falling rocks. Other ailments like appendicitis and heart disorders are less common, but if they strike in the backcountry, it's vital to know what to do. The range of medical advice stretches all the way to administering intravenous drips and performing tube thoracostomies (inserting a drain valve into a patient's fluid-filled lungs). Though the authors warn that such procedures should be performed by a trained physician, if it's a life-and-death situation miles from any hospital, these instructions could make all the difference. Other topics covered include: soft-tissue injuries, fractures, burns, gastrointestinal disorders, neural disorders, infections, allergies, heat and solar injuries, animal bites and stings, and cold injuries. A list of useful prescription drugs for mountaineering is also valuable.
Who could benefit from this book? Anyone venturing into the outdoors, but particularly those bound for remote locations who've already mastered basic first aid. Emergency medical technicians will find some of the topics familiar, but even they won't be expert in all the injuries outlined here. At 20 ounces, Medicine for Mountaineering is worth the extra weight in your pack. --Demian McLean
Book Description
Beyond first aid, this is the medical bibles for backcountry adventurers. Written by a team of climber/physicians and considered the authoritative reference on backcountry medicine. Any trip into remote territory calls for earnest planning and foresight, including preparing for the possibility of illness or injury. A basic knowledge of first aid can help; but how would you treat an appendicitis attack high on a foreign mountain? What if one of your companions had a stroke, or contracted hepatitis on a boat in mid-ocean? Medicine for Mountaineering picks up where first aid manuals leave off. Written by a team of climber-physicians, this fully updated edition of a classic provides expert information as well as procedures on major and minor medical emergencies. Areas covered include: Diagnosis, psychology of accidents, preventive measures. Traumatic injuries--fractures, burns, soft tissue injuries--heat, cold, altitude. Diseases, pain, infections, allergies. Medications, medical kits, legal considerations. Authoritative and comprehensive, Medicine for Mountaineering should be on the equipment list of any hiker, climber, boater, and outdoor user who ventures more than 24 hours beyond medical attention.

Medicine for Mountaineering .......2007-05-12
Great, compact reference for EMS and guides who work at altitude.
Survival Reading.......2006-12-31
A good book to read covering most medical problems anyone would meet. Unfortunately its too big at 900g (2lb) to carry about, and most would leave it behind. Some of the serious medical problems finish with "evacuate the patient" if its not available hardluck! I didn't expect a set of pictures on how to remove an appendix but obviously there is a limit to what can be done in the field.
The writer seemed concerned about being sued and mentions that he nearly left out the very small bit about what should be included in a medical kit, to me this is as important as the rest of the book. In my case, some guidance and information is better than no information.
A Must For Serious Adventurers.......2006-01-12
This book comprises 3 main sections. The first section deals with some basic principles of diagnosis, evacuation and preventive medicine like immunisation, sanitation and disinfection.
Section 2 deals with all sorts of traumatic and non-traumatic injuries/disorders. Fractures and burns, disorders affecting various organ systems are all covered. It's really extensive yet not too wordy for the layman who just needs some essential, practical and highly distilled information.
Section 3 deals with environmental injuries including high altitude problems, heat/cold injuries and animal bites. There is also a very useful glossary covering useful medications and their dosages. Definitely a must for serious adventurers.
Medicine for Mountaineering.......2003-11-05
Excellent source of information for those having to deal with injuries in the wilderness. As a survival instructor I recommend it to all my classes.
Where is mine!.......2001-08-08
Here I am, ordering a replacement. Of all the books on health and first aid, this is the one I look to the most often. I live on a remote island and have used this book to judge the severity of injuries and the need for evacuation, or just the need for time. I am not a mountaineer, but my family does manage to get into scrapes....concussions, chainsaw injuries, broken glass and a recent allergic reaction. This last incident is what made me realize that my ancient copy was gone. This book has been better than any other book as far a raising my kids in a proactive way, especially when it comes to emergency room conversations!

Outstanding.......2007-08-03
I found this book to be of outstanding usefulness. The book is designed for a person with advanced medical skill. It is not a first aid book. It is what the title says "Beyond First Aid". The writer displays his knowledge of care from his own experience as an outdoors man and lays out and describes in detail what is needed under various adverese circumstances.

Great book but needs updated references.......2006-12-28
I have several outdoor medical and first aide books and this one is the best. It really approaches topics that other books avoid like what to do if you cannot get to a doctor or hospital. The suggested kits in the back are also the best I have found. I only have two negative comments:
1. The techniques and advice in the text could be cross referenced to the medical kits better.
2. The references for more information are old or not very good. The website for the book seems to be underconstruction for at least a year and the major suppliers only offer about half of the items suggested. Most of the hard to find items can be purchased at Amazon or Moore Medical.
The other book to consider for dealing with a lack of traditional medical care is "Where there is no Doctor" but that is geared towards running a clinic in the third world rather than hiking.
Wilderness Medicine, Beyond First Aid, 5th Edition.......2006-11-03
Very good book. I felt like I had forgotten lot of what first aid was about and needed som refreshment.. I still do, but more on the pratical plan (!)
buy this book.......2006-02-28
Buy it because you are planning that trip where you'll be three days from civilization.
And keep it around cause life tends to throw things you're way when your'e out and about.
This is my most tattered book. I use it for every medical thing I come across. It not only can set you up to stabilize pretty much any situation and give you the time you need to get help. It will also tell you what to do when you step on an sea urchin or accidentally burn yourself making coffee the same way you make coffee everyday.
a fantastic reference
Perfect Information for Boondocks Travel or Living!.......2004-05-12
I actually owned and read a much earlier version- listened to the advice- set up my 'Traveling Medical Kit'- and really appreciated the clear and concise medical information- and NOW- an updated version- many new ideas interspersed with time-tested procedures and meds- If you spend any time at all in the 'boondocks'-or just travelin'- You need a copy of this book- >and get copies for your kids too-when they get out on their own! This manual is good, practical and will prove itself in the reading of it- and putting into practice it's wisdom- That Dr Forgey- he's something else!!

The Handbook covers most of the medical emergencies one must be prepared to face while recreating off the beaten path. For example: Your mountain biking partner crashes and is sitting in the trail with blood on his face from a scalp wound. What do you do? "Your first instinct is to wipe the blood away and help him up. This is a perfectly natural reaction, but it's dead wrong. Stabilize his neck until you are certain there is no spine injury or other major body system problem, then worry about the laceration." Or: You're caught in an electrical storm while backpacking. Now what? "In the field, the best tactic is to squat with your feet together as low as you can, ideally on your foam pad or backpack, which will help insulate you from ground current...Theoretically, there is a safety zone on the ground about 45 degrees out from the top of a tall object." Covering general emergency medical procedures as well as specific symptoms and accidents--everything from avalanches to snakebites to hypothermia--the Handbook is well-organized, thorough, and practical. But like any useful first-aid guide, it also discusses proper preventative measures and responsible outdoors behavior.

Most have for campers........2007-01-17
After the course with Wilderness Medical Associates, I bought the book to have as a referance. It became much more as I learned more then I thought. It is a book that anyone going into the wilderness should have.
Outward bound wilderness first aid handbook.......2002-01-29
An excellent book. Rather than discussing different catagories of injuries and medical issues peice-meal, it presents basic underlying principles and a system for approaching accidents and medical issues then discusses accidents through that system. It is the most cohesive, integrated wilderness first aid text I have come accross. It uses simple language, and gets the job done without being overly technical (but it is not dumbed-down). It is so accessible and well put together you will actually pick it up and refer back to it (with ease). It is simply a very practical and clear book on wilderness medicine.
provides in-depth understanding of body systems and effects........1999-08-29
This book is simple for the layman to understand. Provides good detail into how the body reacts to wounds, infection, loss of blood etc. Educates the reader to understand the body systems which makes proper treatment understandable and predictable. No more trying to memorize what to do for this injury or that.

Your best backcontry companion!.......2004-09-09
Even with some professional first aid training under my belt, this book gave me the confidence to trust in my abilities (in all types of situations). A must have on any backcountry trip!
Fabulous!.......2004-02-20
I have read different books on the topic of wilderness first aid, but this book is the best ever. Although hands on training can not replace any book, this book is a course by it self and will definitly help you through any course on the matter of wilderness first aid.
If you are serious about wilderness survival, this book will be of great value to you.
The level of this book is easy to read and very easy to understand for anybody. It is very obvious that they know what they are talking about.
Excellent intermediate/advanced resource.......2000-03-22
I read this after completing the American Red Cross Standard First Aid and Adult CPR courses. This book assumes some basic first-aid knowledge and takes you to the next step with a deeper level of material, specifically focused on wilderness first aid techniques. Traditional first aid courses and materials like those taught by ARC assume an urban setting where paramedics and hospitals are minutes away. This book is geared toward the care of patients where such help is hours or days away. It covers effective assessment, treatment and evacuation techniques, as well as assessing urgency of evacuation. Included is information on the frequency of various kinds of illness/injuries in the wilderness based upon years of experience at NOLS. In addition to the standard subjects like shock, soft tissue injuries, broken bones, venomous bites & stings, etc., it discusses diagnosis of difficult abdominal symptoms, gender-specific illnesses/injuries, and stress on the rescuer. The illustrations are clear and the text is highly readable. I recommend this book to any serious outdoor enthusiast or leader.

Wilderness First Aid for the real world outdoorsman.......2003-07-08
This book is a comprehensive guide to First Aid in the wilderness. It points out many injuries and illnesses that you'd commonly find while in the wilderness, and easy-to-follow explainations of what they are, what caused them, how to prevent them, and how to treat them. This is perfect for a Boy Scout or Girl Scout class in First Aid for an upcoming trip; as I use it as the text for the class I teach.
The only area I would say that it is lacking in is the serious, life-threatening injuries, ie cardiopulmonary arrest, tension pneumothorax, etc. However, to be perfectly honest, in the wilderness, injuries like that are very difficult to survive if you are not easily acessable by EMS. Additionally, those injuries are complex, and the treatments aren't always easy to do in the wilderness, much to the contrary, in fact. So understanding them might be important to the field leader, but I don't dwell on the severe injuries too much when I teach because they are difficult to understand, and the treatment is always "Get them to an ambulace and to a hospital as fast as you can."
I highly recommend this book for all Wilderness First aid, and for Mountaineering First Aid.
Excellant Comprehensive Basic and Advanced First Aid Book.......1999-06-26
This is an excellant book especially if you have no experience at all in dealing with emergancy first aid. It give clear, consice information on everything from simple to complete lacerations, emergancy child birth to what to have in a First Aid Kit. Extremely well written and easy to understand.

Book Description
The Wilderness First Responder is a comprehensive text for the recognition, treatment, and prevention of wilderness emergencies. It's essential reading for wilderness educators, trip leaders, guides, search and rescue groups, and anyone who works or plays far from definitive medical care.
This invaluble resource includes expert, step-by-step instructions, clear illustrations, and "Signs and Symptoms" sidebars designed to help you provide care in the wilderness--whenever you are more than an hour away from an ambulance or a hospital. You'll learn how to conduct a patient assessment, improvise when ideal materials are not at handy, and decide whether or not to evacuate a patient.
Learn how to assess and treat: airway obstructions, cardiac arrest, external and internal bleeding, shock, spine injuries, head injuries, chest injuries, abdominal injuries, fractures and dislocations, athletic injuries, soft-tissue injuries, cold- or heat-induced injuries, altitude sickness, insect bites and stings, diabetic emergencies, poisoning emergencies, allergic reactions and anaphylaxis, and much more.
Buck Tilton, co-founder of the Wilderness Medicine Institute of the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS), wrote this book with more than a dozen medical professionals. The book represents more than a century and a half of combined experience in wilderness medicine, rescue, and education. Thouroughly updated and revised, this classic first-ever teaching manual for the "Wilderness First Responder" course is a must-have for anyone venturing into the backcountry.

Wilderness First Responder, 2nd:.......2007-03-26
Having just finished the course for which this text was assigned, I can say that it was accurate as far as my instructor was concerned, save for a couple of instances. The helicopter approach zones may vary depending on whom one talks to. The CPR guidelines had changed, but then - one should be checking the current guidelines periodicly.
As far as that goes, refresher courses are a good idea anyway.
I found the book very readable and to the point.
Book Description
This revised edition of NOLS Wilderness First Aid reflects the changing field of wilderness medicine. Designed as a field textbook for the NOLS wilderness first aid curriculum, it helps train outdoor leaders to prevent, recognize, and treat common medical problems and to stabilize a severely ill or injured patient for evacuation. A vital resource for outdoor enthusiasts, this book covers fundamental topics in first aid--patient assessment, shock, soft tissue injury, burns, fractures and dislocations, and chest, head, and abdominal injury. It explains how to handle environmental problems posed by heat, cold, water, altitude, and poisonous plants and animals. Also discussed are issues related to expedition medicine as well as leadership, teamwork, and communication for rescue groups. While risk can be minimized through good judgment, skills, and experience, being prepared for emergencies in the wild is an essential component of good outdoor leadership.
