Workouts for Dummies by Tamilee Webb, whose buffed body is the star of the Buns of Steel workout video series and frequent TV appearances, is a fine source of motivation, information, and specific workout programs. Even if you've never exercised, don't worry--the book starts with topics as basic as choosing shoes and warming up. Then it covers everything you'll need to create an effective exercise program, starting with an explanation of body types (so you don't think you'll end up looking like Cindy Crawford if you don't already) and the workouts that suit your body type. The book gives directions for stretches, aerobic exercises, muscle conditioning (using weights, furniture, exercise bands, and bars), and workouts for different locations (home, office, gym), all with illustrations. This is a lively, unintimidating workout guide, a good companion if you're just starting out. (A little self-serving, though: one chapter is devoted to "Tamilee's Top Ten Workout Videos.")

Confused by all the For Dummies exercise books? If you want a more strenuous strength-training program using free weights and gym machines, try Weight Training for Dummies--it explains how and illustrates exercises. If you're a beginner, Fitness for Dummies is a terrific introduction to exercise and a precursor to this book, with an overview of everything you need to know to get started safely and effectively. --Joan Price

5 out of 5 stars Easy to read and useful!.......2006-09-11

It is the one of the best. It is more used for general fitness than serious weight lifter. Usually, it takes a few months to notice result in weight training, as such, it is important to keep a training log. For convenient and substainable motivation, I have used my mobile phone as a log from [...] in the gym.

4 out of 5 stars Easy to understand........2006-04-02

What do you do when you've just been hired by a client who hasn't exercised in 26 years, or someone who has just been cleared by their docotor to workout? Well, the knowledge that I have is helpful, but sometimes you need to have the basic knowledge laid infront of you....and you kind of pick up whats really important.
Thats what I found after buying this book, it reminded me of the important things to focus on, while training and educating a new exerciser.....the results? the clients become very confident! Which I think is wonderul to all exercisers, regardless of whether they have trainers or not.
I found the specific exercises for working the different body parts to be really cute!-it really reminded me that no matter how advanced I may be with my knowledge, the winner is always the person whose mastered the basics. This is the type of book you definitely want to have in your library, alongside other advanced books you may have.

2 out of 5 stars Too much theory.......2003-07-29

I wanted a book that gives clear guidelines on how to work out effectively, but this book disappointed me. There's a lot of unnecessary stuff on workout theory, and the chapters on exercises are poorly written.

3 out of 5 stars A decent way to plan a toning workout.......2003-05-25

I bought this thinking it would suggest aerobics moves. You know, one can only watch Richard "sweatin'" so many times. Plus, I like to aerobicize to my own music - CD's from the late 60's or even space music. Tamilee's book did not help with that.

Where it helped was with my "tonin'" days, which alternate with "sweatin'" days. This book provides for all the major muscle groups, and provides some cautions to help you avoid hurting yourself! No rocket science here, but hey - this is a "dummies" book.

4 out of 5 stars Good book for beginners.......2000-05-20

Tamilee guides you through figuring out what your body type is and what sports might be suited for you.

Where she excels, though is on working out different parts of the body, like specific toning exercises for your arms or legs, which are very effective, especially if you use weights.

She explains the correct form and considering this is a book, it's quite well done. All in all, a good book if you're getting started.

You learn walking techniques, how to set up a program, a variety of walking routines, and tips for getting and staying motivated. Neporent breaks walking for fitness into four levels, with plenty of advice on who should do that level, proper form and technique, and routines: For those of us working on getting to level one, Neporent is gentle, explaining how to test endurance; set goals; choose the right clothing, shoes, socks, and sports bra; eat right; set up a routine; walk in different weather conditions; and stay safe. She also includes strength training exercises and stretches for walkers, tips for walking with a dog, common injuries, a treadmill guide, snazzy gadgets, and much more. 4 out of 5 stars Great Guide to Walking!.......2003-04-11

I purchased this book back in 2000. I just picked it back up last week. After reading it, I began my Walking Program. The book is great, easy to read, and a good reference tool. Anyone who is interested in making walking a part of your fitness routine MUST get this book!

2 out of 5 stars Find something else.......2001-10-22

I don't know what I expected, but there wasn't much there. I think that most everyone knows the stuff that's in there. Maybe motivation is what I was after and didn't get it.

3 out of 5 stars IT WAS OKAY.......2001-09-11

NOT AS GOOD AS I HAD HOPED, AS I HAD NOT HAD A BAD "FOR DUMMIES" BOOK IN THE PAST.

5 out of 5 stars Not just for Dummies!.......2001-02-27

Truly, dummies, need not apply. This book is for anyone interested in fitness in general. This book is filled with so much information, it is mind boggling.

I had no idea that buying this book would be such a great move on my part, I have gained so much needed insight on various health topics. From understanding your risk for heart disease, to finding the right pair of shoes, this book has it all.

The author Liz Neoporent, is really a Fitness expert. There are 20 chapters, each jam packed with useful information. I have determined my body mass index, as well as measured the strength of my middle and lower body. I have finally been able to buy the right sports bra, that does not make me 'wiggle and jiggle'. I have understood the 4 levels of walking plus their benefits, and found out the importance of strength training, how beneficial it really is. Plus, I have finally been able to find a pair of shoes that do not give me painful blisters (what a miracle).

This book is great, what I mentioned above, is just skimming the surface of all the useful information provided. This is NOT just a book about walking. This is a great resource for any fitness enthusiast. I recommend it to anyone wanting to better their bodies and themselves.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I learned Pilates using this book.......2007-06-02

I started using this book 2 years ago to learn the basics of Pilates. I have tried other Pilates books/DVDs since, but I keep going back to this book. The first part of the book explains what Pilates is, such as controlling movement, maintaining stability, and why breathing at particular times in the exercises is important, and it gives examples of these that are easy to understand. Then it goes into what the words neutral spine, abdominal scoop, pilates first position, etc., actually mean, and how to do them.

The mat exercises contain 4 levels: Pre-Pilates, Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced. Not knowing anything about Pilates when I started, I began with the Pre-Pilates workout. Because there are multiple steps to most exercises, it did take some time to remember when to breathe, when to roll up or down, but once I got that down, it made the subsequent levels of exercises easier to learn. Also, a few of the exercises were impossible for me because I didn't have the strength to do them, but I just did what I could, for example the hip-up, I would lie on the mat with my feet in the air and worked those abdominal muscles although my feet were going nowhere, and within 2 weeks I was doing all 9 hip-ups. You just have to do a little more each time. The beginning mat series contains some exercises from Pre-Pilates and it's not very long, so it wasn't too difficult to learn.

The intermediate mat series is where I really felt I was getting a workout, and I still use this one, although I have added some to it since. It really felt as if I was getting an intense abdominal workout and after adding the variations for the side kicks, my legs definitely got stronger. The advanced series I have done a few times, but it is rather long, about an hour compared with 20 minutes of the intermediate, and I have trouble finding time for it.

The next section deals with Pilates accessories such as foam roller, magic circle, and big ball, and give some exercises to do using those. Overview of Pilates equipment just tells what some of the things are you might find in a Pilates studio and shows pictures of people using them, but gives no exercises.

Overall this is a great book that I would recommend to anybody interested in learning Pilates. Thanks to the wonderfully detailed instructions, I believe I am getting a safe, effective Pilates workout.

5 out of 5 stars Pilates - a superb reference.......2006-07-29

I borrowed a copy of the book from my local library and liked it so much I bought it for myself and for my daughter-in-law.
I attended a Pilates class and told my instructor that I had the book - she remarked that it is one of the best and recommended it to the whole class here at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

The book gives excellent explanations. While the class gave me a sense of how a flowing routine will work, I can do it at home with the aid of the book.

I recommend it highly. Thanks, A Pilates Dummy Fan

3 out of 5 stars Great if you already have some body knowledge.......2005-10-17

This book was one of my mom's rejects for the reason that she couldn't make head nor tail of the instructions. I like it quite a bit, but I have a background in modern dance and was already familiar with isolating different muscle groups. I think if you don't have a good sense of your body already, this book might be too confusing to start with.

So far there's a lot of good material for me to work with, although much of the book is dedicated to repetitive touting of the benefits of pilates (yes, we already know it tones) as well as super-advanced exercises using complicated equipment, which aren't really "for dummies." Still, the workouts are fun, challenging, and feel good on my body. I would recommend glancing at the instructions before buying and seeing if they make sense to you. If they do, you'll probably like this book -- otherwise, maybe try a video or simpler book.

4 out of 5 stars A good guide if you buy the Pilates hype.......2003-08-23

This is probably the best guide you can buy for Pilates. It is easy to understand and does not try to mystify or complicate the subject. It has good pictures and descriptions of exercises, most of which are good, but more than a few I think are really a strain on the back. I am not really enthusiastic about Pilates. I think basic callestenic exercises are just as effective if done mindfully and correctly. Nevertheless, if you are convinced that Pilates is magic and you want to purchase a guide this would be your best bet.

2 out of 5 stars I agree completely with the review "Not really for Dummies".......2002-10-02

I couldn't understand the instructions either, for the same
reason: You have to read the book while you're trying to
do the exercise. However, this ended up giving me a great workout: I was lying on my back for many minutes holding a "crunch", since I had to keep my neck raised up trying to read the book while I was supine on the mat. This may be a new Pilates exercise.

The original Fitness for Dummies, published in 1996, was a real breakthrough: a book that took a reader through all the fitness basics without being offputtingly complicated or insultingly simplistic. This second edition only improves on that tough balancing act.

The authors are two of the most experienced fitness writers in the business--Suzanne Schlosberg is a longtime contributor to Shape and Liz Neporent is a veteran personal trainer, corporate fitness consultant, and contributor to Shape and The New York Times. In addition to being experienced at explaining exercise, they're both exercise junkies, and their firsthand knowledge and love of the topic is evident throughout.

Each section of the book--whether dealing with basic fitness issues, cardiovascular training, strength training, flexibility, joining a gym, or exercising at home--offers a combination of well-researched, easily understandable information, combined with informed opinion. For example, in chapters discussing exercise equipment, they're able to offer personal reactions to the gear--mentioning that Life Fitness makes great exercise bikes but a treadmill they don't care for.

New information in this second edition includes "100 Reasons to Break a Sweat," featuring the latest research on exercise benefits; sections incorporating Internet fitness resources; and beefed-up exercise-video advice. That latter section includes tips about avoiding rip-offs (older videos are sometimes repackaged, with new covers promising different benefits) and a handy guide to choosing the best video instructors for different fitness levels.

The core information, though, is the best reason to buy this edition of Fitness for Dummies. Exercise science is complicated, but this book makes it as simple--and entertaining--as it can possibly be. --Lou Schuler

3 out of 5 stars Thorough and straightforward........2006-03-24

I like the fact that the book took me back to the basics of fitness and health. This was a good awakening, especially now that i'm dealing with some beginner exercisers. It heightened my sensitivity.
I like the book for its straightforwardness, the authors are honest and I was impressed by this.I've had other dummies books, and this one hasn't failed in delivering the information.

3 out of 5 stars basic but good.......2006-02-09

I liked this book, but found it filled with too much info I've read before. That's what makes it great for someone thast knows NOTHING about exercise, but it;s not a good book for those with about 4-6 months experience looking for something to move their workouts forward.

5 out of 5 stars This is the best beginner fitness book........2002-07-13

I've read several beginner fitness books and I feel this is the most complete and best organized of them all. This has gotten me motivated and started on the right fitness program for me (I've since confirmed with a personal trainer). Honest and accurate fitness information is laid out in an easily understood way (without any questionable product endorsements). No "summary" style book is going to have everything, but they have enough information that you feel like everything else is fine tuning.

To address the concerns of another reviewer, the 2nd edition of this book does discuss common fitness injuries.

    4 out of 5 stars Let's Get Moving!.......2002-04-26

If you've been rather inactive in the recent past, this book will help you to get moving. It not only helped me to plan a well-rounded fitness program, but it really helped me to get motivated. The writing is clear and simple, and the authors do a good job at cutting through the jargon fog and giving you the essentials. and, of course, there's that "For Dummies" humor throughout. Best of all, it's cheaper than a personal trainer. In fact, if you need a personal trainer, this book has great advice on chooding a trainer that's right for you!

    3 out of 5 stars Idiots 4, Dummies 3.......2002-03-28

I need an intro book on fitness that covers all the basis well, and in the bookstore it quickly came down to the Dummies book vs. the Idiots.

Similar quality contents on both sides, and the Dummies has a cleaner layout. But I ultimately chose the Idiots for the following reasons:

    * The Idiots has a whole chapter on Martial Arts, where Dummies has no coverage at all. It also goes over jazz and a few other dance forms. This is very important to me as I consider the usual machine-based workout too soulless.

    * I did not notice this myself, but the editorial pointed out a very important area - how to prevent injuries. The topic is not addressed in the Dummies as far as I can tell from the online TOC.

Owning Weight Training for Dummies is like having two knowledgeable and entertaining personal trainers into your home. The authors, Liz Neporent and Suzanne Schlosberg, authors of the popular Fitness for Dummies, are both fitness professionals who walk (lift, run, bicycle) their talk. They explain the basics of weight training simply, then take you through every step to setting up your own program and doing it properly. Whether you have free weights (dumbbells and barbells), a home machine, or access to a gym with many machines, you'll get an introduction to safe and effective weight training, plus descriptions, technique, and illustrations of dozens of exercises designed to target all major muscle groups. And just in case this is the only fitness book you buy, the authors include some information on cardio exercise, stretching, and other exercise options. Best of all, the book is motivating, easy to understand, and fun to read.

This updated edition of Weight Training for Dummies includes a few new chapters: "Yoga and Pilates" and "Improving Your Balance and Coordination," both in the "Beyond the Barbell" section; "Advanced Weight Training Exercises"; and a few snippets of new material (such as the addition of "Don't dress like a porn star" in the "Weight Training Etiquette" chapter). Otherwise, it's pretty much the same book. If you own the first edition, there's probably no need to buy the updated version. But if you don't own the first edition of this handy and cheery guide already, and weight training is not yet a part of your fitness program, the second edition of Weight Training for Dummies will teach you exactly what to do and how to do it. --Joan Price

    Book Description

It's only natural for a beginner to be baffled by the equipment and the lingo of weight training. In this book, you'll find the knowledge and confidence to start a weight training program, either at home or at a gym. Weight Training For Dummies describes more than 150 exercises suitable for rookies and veterans alike. This edition also updates you on the latest in weight training equipment, Web sites, videos, research, and gym classes.

Everyone has different reasons for wanting to lift weights. Undoubtedly, many of these reasons have to do with looking better. Sculpted arm and toned "abs" have become somewhat of a fashion statement. But there are even more compelling and, ultimately, more satisfying reasons to lift weights. Here's a reminder of what weight training can do for you:

Lifting isn't one of those activities like, say, checkers, that you can competently engage in after a one-minute explanation. Weight Training For Dummies explains the jargon and key safety precautions you need to get started. But the book won't leave you wondering what comes next. This engaging, down-to-earth guide covers all of the following topics and more:

The exercise section of this book demonstrates a wide variety of exercises for all your major muscle groups. Each chapter includes a muscle diagram (so that you can locate your "quads" and your "delts") and an ever-so-brief physiology discussion. Exercises are demonstrated for novices and veterans, home lifters and gym members. You will also find out how to modify many of the exercises if you have trouble with your back, your knees, or other joints.

This is the best book I have found for a real beginner to get comfortable with a weight training routine and, most important, to get past the akwardness at the gym. If you want to incorporate a fitness program into your life, this is a great place to start. Easy to read, good pictures, and the authors accept the fact that there are no dumb questions and then answer them. Very encouraging.

I have read serveral fitness book, but this book contains all the important information in a simple to understand way. Depending on your goal, you have to do weight training, eg. 4 to 6 reps for maxinum muscle growth. The book is a powerful tool when combined with a log. I use a mobile phone log available at www.doitech.com/fitness and make all my log entry easy and available online blog.

5 out of 5 stars A balanced fitness plan is easy with this book!.......2000-06-10

Cross-Training For Dummies is like having your own personal trainer! You pick a cross-training plan to follow (I picked the Weight Loss plan, but you can also choose from a "Base Fitness" plan, Athletic plan, or "Mix-n-Match" plan). Each plan tells you how much time you should spend on cardio and strength training, which exercises (cardio and strength training) you should try, and how much time you should spend on flexibility and power. Then, you just turn to the chapters they note to get a description of the exercise you should do! If you are already involved in a sport, you can also find exercises that will help you with that sport. Plus, there are a bunch of charts you can use to track your progress in your general health, body measurements, or weight training.
