Book Description
Yoga and Ayurveda together form a complete approach for optimal health, vitality and higher awareness. YOGA AND AYURVEDA reveals to us the secret powers of the body, breath, senses, mind and chakras. More importantly, it unfolds transformational methods to work on them through diet, herbs, asana, pranayama and meditation. This is the first book published in the West on these two extraordinary subjects and their interface. It has the power to change the lives of those who read and apply it.
Customer Reviews:
informative, interesting and not too new agey.......2004-04-25
i've got this book after a recomendation of my yoga instractor and just like she said - it helps put the yoga i take at the gym, which is mainly asanas (postures) in a larger context of both spiritual guidness and preseption as well as other live guiding filds, like breathing, eating, and over all living.
though it deals with a lot of topics who were new to me, and a lot of sanskrit turms, the book's very well arange and repeat to explain certion parts more then once so that i was sure to understand, it's very methodic and though it doesn't creat or recoment a spasific practice to live, like some, mostly more shallow book does, it give you certion guidlines and directions to find yourself withing the path of yoga and ayurveda.
the book approach the 3 dosha (type) help you realize what type you belong to (air, fire or water) and what are the best approachs for you concerning breathing, eating, asana practice, meditation and other filds of life. on top of that it gives a very whole phylosofical approach that i liked.
frewley is a very good teacher, he phrases things very clearly and arranged a lot of half known turms while filling a lot of the gaps for me, i enjoyed this book a lot and it had direct influence on my yoga practic.
Full of important info.......2001-08-09
This book introduces, and covers a good deal of areas that, as far as I know, have never been covered before. His explanation of Soma is very sober and answers alot of questions. There is enough info in here for any person to gain, not only from his perspective but also for an informational aspect. Though there are meditation techniques I wouldn't just take up without Intensive Study into both subjects.
A Great book.......2000-06-28
This is the first book on this subject. I am a serious yoga practicioner and so far have never seen anything like this: so well connecting Ayurveda medicine knowledge with especially Hatha and Kundalini yoga. You can see that the auther is an adept, informing us about the working of prana in the subtle body. The book contains to my knowledge the most clear and complete explanation for a serious practitioner the inner alchemy of yogic transformation. This is not a book for a beginner! It explains everything about prana, ojas and tejas, vital information on pranayama, pratyahara, chakras and kundalini and all in connection with Ayurveda. This is the first book of the kind!

Book Description
Most people think of yoga as a solitary activity that is inherently therapeutic. While that is generally true, yoga poses and breathing practices can also be prescribed for specific health problemsâoften in combination with dietary advice taken from Ayurveda, traditional Indian medicine. Yoga Therapy is an essential guide for yoga teachers, advanced practitioners, and anyone who wants to make therapeutic use of yoga. A. G. and Indra Mohan prescribe postures, breathing techniques, and basic Ayurvedic principles for a variety of common health problems, including asthma, back pain, constipation, hip pain, knee pain, menstrual problems, and scoliosis. Yoga Therapy is one of the few books that shows yoga teachers how to put together appropriate yoga sequences and breathing techniques for their students. Mohan details how to correctly move into, hold, and move out of poses, how to breathe during practice to achieve specific results, and how to customize a yoga practice by creating sequences of yoga poses for a particular person.

not the best, but still good.......2003-02-02
This book was interesting in that it explored regions of Ayurveda I had not encountered before. What I didn't care for was its lack of a doshic assessment test, lists of yes and no foods, and some common recipes. In that respect it was not specific enough to be used as a resource book. Then it was terribly specific in its case studies. At least in terms of herbs. It might use half a page to list ingredients in an herbal medicine then say nothing about dietary changes. I probably will not use this as a sourcebook. If you are looking for that (especially as a beginner) get Judith Morrisons THE BOOK OF AYURVEDA.
Excellent intro to Ayurvedic principles........1999-02-02
If you know nothing about Ayurveda but are curious and want to know more, this is the place to start. Beautiful layout, art work and easy to read text, charts and photographs. This is not a how to manual but a layman's manual of concepts.
This book makes the study of Ayurveda an enjoyable adventure.......1998-10-16
At last what many people have been looking for: a well produced , highly artistic illustrated guide to the often difficult and arcane world of Ayurveda! While there are a number of excellent introductory books on this subject, until this one none have been presented in such an accessible visual format. If you have trouble getting into Ayurveda or introducing Ayurveda to your friends, family, students, or clients, this book may be exactly what you need. The Complete Illustrated Guide to Ayurveda makes the study of Ayurveda not so much an intellectual excercise as an enjoyable adventure. It uses traditional Indian art as well as contemporary illustrations and examples, to make the subject relevant to people today. Yet the book does not sacrifice anything by way of content. Anyone interested in Ayurvedic medicine or natural healing will want to have this book, not merely on the shelf, but out in the open for everyone to look at and benefit from. The END

Book Description
Religious Therapeutics explores the relationship between psychophysical health and spiritual health and presents a model for interpreting connections between religion and medicine in world traditions. This model emerges from the work's investigation of health and religiousness in classical Yoga, A÷yurveda, and Tantra--three Hindu traditions noteworthy for the central role they accord the body. Author Gregory P. Fields compares Anglo-European and Indian philosophies of body and health and uses fifteen determinants of health excavated from texts of ancient Hindu medicine to show that health concerns the person, not the body or body/mind alone. This book elucidates multifaceted views of health, and--in the context of spirituality and healing--explores themes such as mental health, meditation, and music.
