3 out of 5 stars Great book--until the baby comes.......2007-08-07

I also bought this book while I was pregnant. While the information on when to call the doctor, how to diaper, bathe, feed, etc., was useful, once my baby was born, I found some of the advice unrealistic. The advice on "sleep training," for instance, struck me as inhumane. Also, the emphasis on milestones can cause one to forget to enjoy their child as they are. After my daughter was born, I hardly used it at all.

5 out of 5 stars Very informative.......2006-06-02

Believe it or not, but I bought this book from amazon even before I got pregnant for 1st time. I wanted to know what to expect before I become a mother. The book is very well structured, informative and covers everything. It would be easy to find anything you need in an emergency. After reading it I've got a good feeling that I can handle everything about babies as far as books like this exist and can be at hand. Thank you, authors.

5 out of 5 stars So informative..........2005-08-25

As an expectant mother, I had exhausted all the info on pregnancy and wanted to learn as much as I could - while I still had some free time - on what to expect during our baby's first year. This book proved to be an invaluable resource on everything from breastfeeding to bathing to baby poop and beyond! I know I will refer to it often after our baby arrives, and I recommend it highly for expectant and new parents alike.

This book's title sure sounds a little scary, but as its often-hilarious testimonials from first-time parents show, expectant parents frequently feel really stupid. Like the vast majority of For Dummies books, this one is supremely organized and indexed to help you find the answer to most any question, especially the embarrassing ones you may be reluctant to ask your doctor ("Is it okay to have sex in the last trimester?" "How long does it take the ugly conehead effect to go away after birth?") and the more serious ones ("Can I breast-feed while I'm on the Pill?").

Unlike many pregnancy books, this one has plenty of helpful information for the mother's partner, including ways to deal with vicious mood swings, helpful tips for preparing for childbirth class, and seven tricks for easing her labor pain--even if she's threatening that you'll never have sex again. Besides chapter after chapter of information about pregnancy's physical aspects and how to stay comfortable during the next 40 weeks, there's also plenty of advice on emotional issues--from learning how to say "hands off!" to the pesky people who want to rub your belly to coping with postpartum blues. Some readers may be offended by the book's slightly warped sense of humor (example: "breast engorgement really sucks"), but the authors never treat serious topics in an off-base way. The book's definitely geared toward first-time parents, but for moms and dads confused by the many new medical tests and modern options (such as the doula [pregnancy coach] dilemma or decision to freeze the baby's umbilical cord or not), there's a fine education to be had between this book's covers.

3 out of 5 stars Was disappointed by this book..........2007-01-27

I found out I was pg in November, and since I had given away all of my pg books I was looking to get one for reference, even though I am a mom of three. I swear by "The Complete Idiots Guide to Pregnancy", but after reading the reviews of this book I went ahead and ordered it. I was so disappointed by this book.

The Complete Idiot's Guide...breaks down your pregnancy not only by trimester, but also by week, which I found very helpful in my previous pregnancies. PREGNANCY FOR DUMMIES does not do that; it simply breaks down your pregnancy by trimester. Personally, I like the little weekly milestones, and I didn't have that with PFD.

Overall, it is an informative book. There is great information to be found, however, it's not as detailed as I'd hoped. I also miscarried my pregnancy, so if I should ever become pg again this isn't a book that I'll use for reference. I'll either get my usual Complete Idiot's Guide or look for something else. But since I was looking to change things up a bit, I was not happy with the selection of this book and won't use it again. I wouldn't put it on my top five, either, if someone asked me for a book recommendation...

But that's just my opinion ;)

2 out of 5 stars I'm not that dumb........2007-01-10

It may be titled "Pregnancy for Dummies", but even though I've never been pregnant before... it turns out I'm not THIS dumb. Unless you've been completely under a rock your whole life, you already know more than this book can teach you. Skip it and buy something else.

4 out of 5 stars So simple........2006-02-25

This is my first time being pregnant and i didn't want to be overloaded with useless information.
This book is to the point and easy to understand.
My husband is also reading it and he enjoys the info he is getting out of it.
Good work!

5 out of 5 stars Common sense approach to pregnancy.......2005-12-23

I'm 36, overweight, hypertensive, and having my first baby. I wish Pregnancy for Dummies had been the first pregnancy book I had purchased. I purchased three others before I finally got this - in my third trimester - after I rented the DVDs. This book is very straightforward and has sense of humor. I took a childbirth class chock full of info on natural childbirth, breathing, relaxing, etc. This book was a great companion to the class - a basic primer. If you need additional information, go ahead and buy a couple more books (25 is probably overkill, though. It's a baby, not a thesis).
Two of the books I purchased prior -- What to Expect When You're Expecting and the Mother of All Pregnancy Books were loaded with every horrible thing that can happen at every stage of pregnancy. Loads more information on genetic problems than you need in a normal pregnancy. Heaven forbid if you eat a Twinkie at 22 weeks!! I thought they were both alarmist. My AFP test said I had a higher chance for Down's Syndrome. I went to my amniocentesis test convinced that even if the baby tested fine that the amnio itself would cause me to miscarry. Long story short - the baby is fine and the amnio wasn't a big deal (just don't look at the needle!).
I think today that most women understand they need to stop drinking and smoking, take prenatal vitamins, eat some vegetables, and see an OB. If they don't know already, then I can't imagine they'd be buying any pregnancy books anyway.

2 out of 5 stars not worth buying if you want to know all your birth options.......2005-05-04

Since I am a nurse and doula amongst other titles, I figured I would see what this book is all about and I must say that I was very disappointed in it, including the tv program that was based on this book. This book reminded me of going to a hospital-based childbirth education class, where it only gives you one side of birth- the medicalinized way or no way at all, with intervention after intervention. It did not describe at all any of the pain management techniques other than medications, nor did it describe or mention homebirth or birth center options, or even doula support. If you want to know all the current info out there, this book is definately not the one to get.

2 out of 5 stars Shallow and Incomplete.......2005-09-07

I disagree with the reviewers that say the coverage is encyclopedic. On the contrary, every time I try to look up something in the book, I come away disappointed. Flat nipples, plugged milk ducts, mastitis, blisters on nipples -- either I can find nothing on the subject or at most a paragraph that isn't helpful. I generally like Dummies books, but this is the worst one I've ever seen.

5 out of 5 stars Great for new moms.......2004-08-19

A very informative and comprehensive read, especially for new moms. I specifically like the encyclopedic nature of the book...easy to look up various topics of interest and/or concern. But I also liked the personal feel the authors gave to it...short anecdotes, personal opinions, etc. The book is encoraging without being pushy. It helped this new mom figure out nursing very quickly.

5 out of 5 stars Everything You Need to Know..........2004-06-12

This book is packed full of everything you need to know about breastfeeding. Even better, the information is easy to find, which as any new mom will tell you, is essential those first hectic weeks and throughout a baby's infancy. Before giving the book to a friend who's expecting, I wanted to make sure it would stand up to any question she would have and any situation she might encounter. So I thought back to my own experiences, first with my daughter, then with my twin boys. Every doubt I had, every challenge I faced, I found easily in the index, the nicely outlined contents, or by flipping through the pages. The fact that this book is written by practicing RNs who have been in maternity for a number of years should be a great comfort to any breastfeeding mom. I especially like the sidebars in the grey boxes, many of them with personal tidbits from the co-authors' own breastfeeding experiences. Reading them, I found myself remembering the joys and challenges of nursing my babies. I wish this book had been available to me. I will happily pass it along to my friend and recommend it to other moms.

5 out of 5 stars Breastfeeding for Dummies.......2004-04-12

Excellent book. Would recommend for any women not decided on breastfeeding. This book simplifies and natural process that should be considered by every pregnancy women. Breastfeeding for the long or short term is eloquently described in this book

5 out of 5 stars Thanks for my gorgeous baby........2005-10-31

The book covers fertility options in great depth and if it only suits dummies I am not sure what that says about the many experts out there who couldn't seem to solve my problem. It gave me questions and answers that the experts couldn't and after 8 years trying and many $ spent and with my biological clock about to expire - this gave me what I needed to ask the right questions, get the right tests and surgery done, and finally fall pregnant ! You've nothing to lose by reading it and checking if there is anything you might have missed elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars A Very Good IVF Resource.......2005-02-15

My Husband & I were getting ready to be thrown into the IVF arena. I had been looking for a resource book to help us through this daunting process but just couldn't find the right one. I went to the book store every weekend and kept picking up the same old ones trying to convince myself that "it would do" but the information just didn't seem to go into depth on the massive (expensive) subject I needed them too. Then came cycle day 1 and I called my doctor only to find out the IVF lab was closing in the next 2 months due to construction at the hospital where it is housed - we got thrown into IVF much quicker than anticipated. We went into the doctors office and got the specs on our individualized plan and the injection lessons but still came out feeling completely overwhelmed. I went back to the bookstore to pick up one of the other books I had been looking at just to calm down a little bit when I found this one. I have found it to be a very good resource if you are getting ready to go through IVF. I felt a lot more informed about the process which helped my anxiety to subside and believe me, going into this more worked up than you have to be is not a good idea :) The authors did a great job explaining the IVF process. The only areas I wish they had gone into more detail is on injectibles and labwork. They do touch on these subjects, I just wish they had gone into even more detail. But overall a very good resouce for IVF. Thank you ladies from a grateful (hopefully successful) IVF patient.

2 out of 5 stars More of the same...........2004-04-12

If you have read any other books on infertility, don't bother with this one. It truly is for dummies, in that there is really no helpful new approach or information. It is more of a reproductive dictionary.

5 out of 5 stars My new fertility dictionary!.......2003-06-16

This is my new fertility dictionary! I can look up all the technical stuff that I need to know while trying to conceive (ttc). It has given me a 'game plan' for what I need to do next. I have used this book to figure out the RIGHT questions before my doctor's visits and understand all that he said afterwards. I also really appreciate the personal stories. I have gotten down and out (even though I've only been trying to have a baby for six months) and worried about what it will take to get pregnant and hearing about other people the same as me has been kind of comforting. I have read some of the stories and suggestions about relationships to my husband as well. He and I have been at each other's throats during this process and at least it has given us some things to laugh about as well.

More so than any fertility book I have read so far, this book combines all the technical information with the emotional side as well.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for anyone TTC.......2003-05-24

Having just hit the 2 year mark in trying to conceive this book is long overdue. One of the authors is an IVF nurse and the other is a 3 year infertility success story. They cover everything from starting out naturally through the whole IVF experience. They captured so many of my feelings and experiences, from being the human pin-cushion with endless dr appts to dealing with those difficult baby showers. It also has a great Cheat Sheat that covers common terms used on all the fertility message boards, the 5 most important tests, and normal blood test results during a cycle. It is filled with personal stories and I came away from it knowing once again that I'm not alone. I'm thinking about getting it for all of my friends and family members who have shared my experience so they can have a better idea of what it is all about. My last two years encapsulated in a Dummies book. Thank you Jackie and Sharon for taking the time to write such a comprehensive and important book.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, wonderful book!.......2007-10-10

I am very grateful to Dr. Bennett for writing such an easy-to-understand, comprehensive, and compassionate book about Postpartum Depression. I have struggled with PPD for 9 months before seeking treatment, not realizing that what I was experiencing was an illness. Dr. Bennett's book has shed light on many of my symptoms, as well as giving me some glimmer of hope that I may someday feel better. It is a saving grace with this illness not to feel so lonely and isolated, and Dr. Bennett's book provides a warm and helpful approach to overcoming the experience of PPD.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing short of a miracle!.......2007-09-27

I appreciate this book in every aspect that it was written. I could not have found something more informational, inspirational and incredible. Dr. Shoshana, I applaud your determination to help women from everywhere learn more about PPD. The great thing is that you focus so much on what can be done to recover from this illness because you were there at one point in your life. Your book inspires the hope in me that one day I will be myself again.

For women out there who are facing this very illness that I am now recovering from, buy this book. You won't regret it, I promise!

4 out of 5 stars Helpful.......2005-08-10

The book gave very good tips on where to find different activities to do while pregnant. It also includes help for those who haven't worked out before. Not as much help for someone who was very athletic prior to becoming pregnant. It is really for those who have no or limited knowledge of working out.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Resource.......2005-02-16

As a fitness enthusiast and mother of three, I loved the peace of mind I got from reading this book. I've been exercising all my life and didn't want to stop when I got pregnant. Cram and Drenth offer a no-nonsense approach to staying fit and healthy from the first trimester to the last. I highly recommend this book.

Finally...a fitness guide which accurately covers topics for those women anticipating pregnancy, or who are currently pregnant or post-partum. Too often, pregnancy guides tend towards a patronizing tone and as a physical therapist I find them hard to recommend. This thorough text encourages a woman to trust in herself while giving pointers for seeking professional guidance when necessary. The uplifting tone elevates women thereby encouraging them to begin or continue an active pregnancy both for the benefit of themselves and their babies.

5 out of 5 stars An essential for any pregnant exerciser........2004-07-22

Even today many doctors are uneducated and uninformed about exercise and pregnancy. Fit Pregnancy for Dummies is an invaluable resource that can alleviate anxiety one might have about exercising during pregnancy. Expert Catherine Cram provides a wealth of information based on the latest research, numerous ideas and examples for, and motivation, for helping one make healthy decisions about exercising during pregnancy. As a fitness professional and a new mom I have a special appreciation for this work.

I really enjoyed this book!

It covers every area you could need to start an exercise program for yourself during your pregnancy. Whether you are just getting started or already have been exercising it covers a wide variety of information. The book does a very good job of motivating you to have an overall healthy lifestyle along with your pregnancy.

It is written in an easy to read format, even it you have limited time, with many helpful tips.

As a mother of three I realize how easy it is to sacrifice every minute for your family. But if you can find a time for yourself to exercise it is amazing how you will have more energy and be a happier mom for your kids!! This book definately will help you find a way to fit it into your lifestyle.

Book Description

If you could remember your own potty training, you’d probably recall a time filled with anxiety and glee, frustration and a sense of accomplishment, triumphal joy and shamed remorse. You’d remember wanting so much to make mommy and daddy happy, and at the same time to make them pay for being so darned unreasonable. And you’d recall feeling incredibly grown up once you got it right. Maybe if we could remember our own potty training, it wouldn’t be so tough when it came our turn to be the trainers. But as it is, most of us feel like we can use all the expert advice and guidance we can get.

Potty Training For Dummies is your total guide to the mother of all toddler challenges. Packed with painless solutions and lots of stress-reducing humor, it helps you help your little pooper make a smooth and trauma-free transition from diapers to potty. You’ll discover how to:

Mother and daughter team, Diane Stafford and Jennifer Shoquist, MD separate potty-training fact from fiction and tell you what to expect, what equipment you’ll need, and how to set the stage for the big event. They offer expert advice on how to:

And they offer this guarantee: “If your child is still in diapers when he makes the football team or gets her college degree, you can send him or her off to us for a weekend remedial course—and ask for a refund of the cost of this book.”

4 out of 5 stars good basic knowledge.......2007-05-02

Loaned this to a friend and have never seen it again! I liked it for the basic ideas. If nothing else, it confirmed that my thoughts were correct.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2007-02-22

This is the 3rd book we've read on the subject, and this is my favorite. I really appreciated the examples of how to respond to my child so that she would be encouraged and not pressured. It also helped me be less frustrated by accidents. The positiveness and enthusiasm is working really well for my daughter. After 1 month of potty training with other books she still didn't tell me when she wanted me to take her to the potty. After 2 days of this book, she told me she wanted me to take her to the potty. Hurray!

5 out of 5 stars Potty Training for the not so dumb.......2007-01-12

This book is great. My daughter trained her son in a week with the suggestions from this book.

4 out of 5 stars I loved this book!.......2006-11-25

I have to disagree with the other reviews wholeheartedly. I bought this book in preparation for training my son. He's my second, so I did manage to train his sister "on my own," but she is a girl and he's a boy, and she's 5 1/2 years older, so it was a looong time ago. I have always dreaded potty training, but this book's "cheerleading" style has been so helpful and motivational. We are just at the beginning stages, but this is a great reference. The section on books, potty chairs and other helps is really great. This book is helpful to have on hand when your child is around 18 months so that you will be ready to start the preparation and pick up the cues, even though you will not likely start moving forward until the child is closer to 2 or 2 1/2.

1 out of 5 stars Dummies is accurate.......2006-01-04

I couldn't get past the effort at clever jokes, witty remarks, and cute made-up phrases in this book on every single page. Tidbits of information clutter every page is a truly random fashion. Not only that, the real information is hidden somewhere in between. Also, is is really a topic that warrants such a thick and complicated book?

5 out of 5 stars Baby signing for dummies.......2007-05-13

Great book, this has been very helpful communicating with our young grandchildren!!!

5 out of 5 stars Wish I had this book with my first child!.......2007-02-05

This book is a great way to learn sign language and teach your babies/kids. My now 20 month old is able to tell me what she needs and there is much less frustration in the house than I had with my first child at this age. My 4 1/2 year old and my 20 month old can communicate with each other as well through signs. I love this book and it has started me on a path of learning/teaching more signs. You can't go wrong with it - even if you only use one sign from it (you don't have to remember them all to have your life easier by using signs).

5 out of 5 stars Great Resource especially for beginner Baby Signers.......2007-01-10

If you've heard any of the buzz about teaching your baby to sign, but don't know or understand the importance...this book will tell you. It's informative and easy to read. You'll learn some basic and everyday useful signs to share with your baby. Signing is advantageous for all ages to learn. My almost 7 year old and 3 1/2 year old really enjoy learning new signs (now that I have a book) past the couple I taught them eons back and help with the 20 month old in her learning. Signing makes communicating so much easier too. Neither one of us is frustrated in knowing when she's done eating or wanting more. I can communicate across a noisy room without yelling. And to find out that it's only helping their brain power by learning to sign...what parent or caregiver wouldn't want that. This book helps make that possible in easy steps.

5 out of 5 stars Very Helpful Book.......2007-01-10

This book is wonderful in learning how to sign with your baby. It is very easy to read and understand. I highly recommend this book to anyone learning to sign with their baby.
