Book Description

Even the best cyclists and coaches can miss small details that can lead to serious injuries over the course of many miles on the bike. Andy Pruitt, renowned for his expertise in preventing and treating cycling injuries, has consulted with professional athletes throughout his career, including Lance Armstrong and Axel Merckx. Using computerized pedaling analysis, he has made it possible for countless athletes to achieve the elusive perfect bike fit, thereby dramatically improving their performance. This medical guide draws on his years of experience in this area. He describes the sport’s most common ailments, identifying the symptoms and causes as well as treatments that keep athletes on the road. Written in an accessible, straightforward manner, the book tackles everything from personal training programs to biomechanics, from aging to riding through illness. Perhaps most importantly, riders learn how to make critical adjustments to bike fit, leading to increased comfort, power, and efficiency — and fewer problems.

4 out of 5 stars Keep me cycling.......2007-06-12

Although no book can ever agree with every bit of cycling wisdom a keen rider picks up over the years - this one goes a long way to reinforcing what has become second nature in many instances for me. In addition to that, one bit of information has totally changed the way I ride, a fab way of compensating for unequal leg length without orthotics or cleat spacing. No more sores on one side because of slipping across the seat.
As to seat setback, top tube and stem length and the way it relateds to rider centre of gravity, I must say I think that Keith Bontrager with his "myth of KOPS" (search google) has the best word, complex tho.
This guy Pruitt is pretty hot in my mind, he'd have to be to write this book.

4 out of 5 stars Good Read.......2007-05-10

This book has some great information in it. I wish it would have more detailed info regarding injuries and different aches and pains. It runs through this info pretty quickly.

All in all a nice cycling reference book.

5 out of 5 stars Andy Pruitt's Complete Medical Guide for Cyclists.......2007-03-11

Written for the roadie, Andies book is informative, and thorough. I recommend this book for all cycling enthusiasts.

2 out of 5 stars A mixed bag - fit first, problems aplenty, not "complete".......2007-03-11

If you want a decent book about bike fit, this might be a book for you. But I have mixed feelings about this book, and overall wouldn't recommend it if you're expecting a complete medical guide for cyclists. Despite its title, this book is not "complete," as claimed. It doesn't touch on a lot of issues for riders, like riding in cold weather, for instance. Arnie Baker's book is more complete ("Bicycling Medicine"). Pruitt's main focus seems to be on bike fit, and here he seems to know what he's talking about, even if his ideal approach is inaccessible to readers of the book (you have to go to his lab and get reflectors put on you and a movie made). The book is very thin. At its best, this means the author is concise, and some of his insights are great. At its worst, the book seems superficial. The section on supplements is most troublesome. Here, the author seems compromised and conflicted. He allows a physician who has a particular view of hormones, supplementation, and athletics to essentially write in the book, and even to push his products. I was a little insulted by this. Overall, this book probably wasn't worth the money for me -- it isn't complete, and has a lot of internal deficiencies.

5 out of 5 stars If you ride any kind of bicycle, you need this book........2007-01-12

Short of going to the Boulder Center for Sports Medicine and getting personally fitted, this is the best way to adjust the settings on your bike. This book takes you through all of the biomechanical factors involved with cycling, and using simple language and techniques, you'll be able to improve your bike fit and possibly eliminate a lot of pain. More importantly, you will prevent long-term physical damage.

A must have.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book! Changed my life..........2005-07-26

I would like to thank Gary Null for getting this book out to the public. It's helped me get back my health. I'm 54 and could hardly walk a 100 feet before starting these exercises. I'm walking 3 miles daily now and have lost 70 pounds and I owe it to Gary's advice from this book. The book breaks down each exercise routine into east to follow steps and gives plenty of great info about diet. I would also like to point out a rather suspicious review from Publishers Weekly. This review slams this book and I really don't know why. The complaint seems to be too much information for advanced runners. Well if you're an advanced runner any book for beginners to advanced will have info in it that's covering what you already know. I believe this is just another establishment crony looking to take a shot at a leader in the alternative medicine and holistic health field. Thanks again Gary

You're on the field, tennis court, or skating rink, and you sprain your ankle. What you do about it from the first few minutes on can determine how much pain you'll endure and how soon you'll get back to your sport. Anybody's Sports Medicine Book: The Complete Guide to Quick Recovery from Injuries tells you what you should do immediately, when to see a doctor, and how to rehabilitate your injury. Organized by injured body part, it's aimed at the fitness exerciser as well as the hard-core recreational athlete.

James Garrick, M.D., is a super sports doc with the ability to explain in a simple, commonsense way everything you need to know about what's wrong with you and what to do about it, along with rehab exercise illustrations, commonly asked questions, and when to seek medical help. Garrick offers many extras, such as tips for older athletes, how to choose a sports medicine doc, and special considerations for ballet dancers. All of this is in a lively, chatty style, as if you were sitting in Dr. Garrick's office.

Garrick heads San Francisco's Center for Sports Medicine and is medical advisor to the National Football League, the U.S. Olympic Figure Skating Team, and the San Francisco Ballet. Peter Radetsky is a science writer with a clear, sprightly style. This book is greatly needed, especially in these days of managed care when it's difficult for fitness athletes even to get a referral to a sports-medicine specialist or to get rehabilitative care. Read this highly recommended book before you get hurt, and carry it in your gym bag. --Joan Price

3 out of 5 stars Not the best choice.......2003-07-19

I bought this book after incurring a sports injury. Although it has some useful information, I found Micheli's Sports Medicine Bible to be far superior - more depth and better information.

5 out of 5 stars How to Play with Your Injuries.......2001-05-06

This book gives excellent information and advice on how to live with your injuries and continue to enjoy your favorite sports. It gives blunt information on the benefits of surgery for different conditions--pro and con. Garrick's credentials show his ability to get injured athletes (professionals as well as weekend warriors) back onto the playing field as quickly as possible. He also gives advice on sport-specific prevention of injuries--strengthening excerises and playing techniques. Besides a copy for myself (an aging tennis player), I am buying one for my son who does extreme snowboarding and biking and spends much time in emergency rooms!

3 out of 5 stars An overview, but not a complete guide.......2001-01-28

I used this book as a guide to recovering from patellofemoral pain syndrome, a very common, but very difficult and debilitating problem.

What I found is that the book's recommendation to strengthen the vastus medialus and stretch the quadriceps group is fine as far as it goes. But for many sufferers it will not go far enough. Many doctors feel that any or all of the muscles in the leg, from the hips to the ankles, may need strengthening/and or stretching to overcome this syndrome.

If you do work on your vastus medialus (which practically every doctor recommends, it's just that other muscles may be involved), follow the author's suggestion to use an electic muscle stimulator. It builds the muscle much faster than any other form of isometric exercse. Muscle stimulators are now sold on the net.

If this doesn't cure your knee problems, don't despair. Find a more comprehensive (but not necessarily more stressful) exercise program.

5 out of 5 stars Every Serious Athlete Should have this Book in their Library.......2000-10-23

Dr. Garrick's book reads like an office consultation with this highly qualified and experienced orthopedic surgeon; it is clear, straightforward and informative. For twenty years he has dealt with the abuses and insults I've heaped on my 58-year-old body during mountain climbing excursions, wilderness skiing, backpacking, foot races, ocean kayaking, and heavy back yard work. Each time I limped into his Sports Medicine Center at Bush and Hyde Streets in San Francisco, complaining about plantar fascitis, neck pain, or my latest nemesis, a torn medial meniscus, he convinced me to follow a regimen of strengthening exercises over a period of weeks instead of recommending surgery right off the bat. Sometimes it worked, other times surgery was necessary.

Jim's book is a valuable resource for any athlete, professional or otherwise. It is organized in such a way that it explains the body parts in detail and what can go wrong with them. If you are like me, you want to know just what a medial meniscus is, how it functions, and why it went south on you. Sidebars on the first page of each chapter warn you to see a doctor if any of the listed symptoms are present. Just as likely, the book may steer you along your own path to recovery. If you are a serious athlete, you should have this book in your library.

The Young Athlete aims to help the parents of more than 30 million U.S. kids who play organized sports to keep them safe and healthy--physically, socially, and psychologically. The book is not just about sports medicine; in fact, only about one-third of the book addresses avoiding and treating injuries. The rest explores essential issues such as how to be a good sports parent, hallmarks of good coaching, nutrition and nutritional supplements, and keeping values and perspective intact (including topics such as preventing sports from taking over the family's life, good sportsmanship, and ethics).

This book also offers helpful and often provocative insights into the young athlete's world. For example, although most proclaim that cheating is wrong, many athletes, coaches, and parents justify "what can we get away with?" behavior. Checklists, bulleted lists, and quotes from parents about their problems make it easy to skim for pertinent and interesting information about this and many other issues.

Author Jordan D. Metzl, M.D., cofounder and medical director of the Hospital for Special Surgery's Sports Medicine Institute for Young Athletes and a former member of the U.S. Olympic Committee Medical Advisory Board, has been team physician for several schools, so you can be assured of the validity of the book's content. Highly recommended for parents of school-age athletes. --Joan Price

Book Description

Amateur sports used to mean varsity and JV teams in high school and college, but today more than thirty million kids play on a wide range of recreational and competitive or select teams, and at younger and younger ages. Parents want to encourage safe sports for their children, both on the field and off. Whether your athlete is a five-year-old beginner or the star of a varsity team, The Young Athlete provides guidance on everything from working with the coach to preventing and treating sports-related injuries. Jordan D. Metzl, M.D., co-founder and medical director of The Sports Medicine Institute for Young Athletes and one of America's premier pediatric sports physicians, explains:

* how to keep your child athlete healthy in mind and body
* how to deal with the coach and other parents and help your child handle team pressure
* how to recognize and prevent injuries such as fractures, ligament tears, and repetitive stress injuries
* how to recognize when your child is doing "too much"
* how to judge the impact of daily physical practice on growing bodies

The Young Athlete provides two kinds of guidelines. First, it helps both you and your child keep a sensible perspective on the benefits of organized sports and avoid the "win at all costs" mentality. Through personal advice and anecdotes from his medical practice, Dr. Metzl, a marathon runner, Ironman triathlete, and former college soccer player, helps parents evaluate real-life situations and make decisions. He addresses the concerns of parents who have no experience in sports but want to encourage their children to achieve their utmost potential.

Second, this book focuses on strategies that can help prevent injuries and promote health. Dr. Metzl tells you how to recognize the most common injuries and determine their degree of seriousness. He also discusses the nutritional needs of the developing athlete and the benefits of strength and preventive conditioning before and during the season. The Young Athlete will enable your young athlete to be the best that he or she can be, both on and off the field.

3 out of 5 stars A sports doctor's complete guide for parents by Jordan Metzl.......2007-07-20

I though I had done that already. So, once again, the book arrived on time but the sender failed to tell that this was a LIBRARY BOOK. It was full of stickers with library numbers on the cover and inside the book itself. Had I known this, I would not have bought it. It's one thing to buy a "used" book. It's another, to buy a used book with stickers and notations. So, I am not very pleased and I emailed the sender upon receipt.

5 out of 5 stars Every parent of a young athlete should ready this book........2005-11-30

I have four daughters, and as I read this book I alternated between thinking "That's exactly right based on my experience!" and "Wow, I'm very glad to know that!"

The range and depth of information is impressive, and Dr. Metzl's writing style makes you just keep reading once you start.

This book should be required reading by all sporting parents. I can promise you'll be a better parent for having read it.

5 out of 5 stars a book full of mazel.......2005-03-01

When my son slipped during a recent curling match, I was worried that he'd never feel comfortable comepting gain, but Dr. Metzl's excellent book gave my wife and me the information we needed to get our son back in the game. This book is a must-read for parents with kids in sports. It does for sports injuries what chicken soup and chopped liver do for the soul.

5 out of 5 stars A Superb Book.......2002-11-27

This is one of the best health books, and one of the best parenting books, I have ever read. Dr. Metzl's style is both authoritative and engaging. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars An althete's father from California.......2002-04-17

Dr. Metzl clearly articulates the do's and don'ts of sports medicine and there impact to young athlete's. He has a dry sense of humor that makes the book an enjoyable read. A must have for parents with active, athletic children.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent source of information.......2001-02-22

The complete guide to food for sports performance is an excellent resource for athletes of all levels. Not only does it provide detailed nutritional information during training it also provides very useful tips for competition (pre-, during and post). The second part of the book addresses a wide range of different sports from distance running and rowing to gymnastics and diving. This part is particularly useful as it highlights problems and nutritional deficiencies that are experienced by athletes in this sport, thus helping the reader to pinpoint (or watch out for) certain eating "mistakes" in their favourite sport. Case studies offer very useful examples on how even small changes in the diet can make a big difference. A brilliant book for anyone interested in sports nutrition.

It is hard to keep reading about what "the athlete" should eat. The athlete doesn't exist. But gymnasts and runners and swimmers and basketball players do, and they all have really different needs and interests. This book begins with a section on the principles of sports nutrition - from the science to the general practice. This part is good, and provides an up-to-date view of the latest ideas in eating for peak performance. This shouldn't be too surprising since the author is the head of nutrition at the Australian Institute of Sport. The language is easy to read and makes scientific principles comprehensible.

But it is the second half of this book that is unique and special. It takes a focussed look at various sports, providing a personal glimpse of the nutritional needs and the real life eating practices of the athletes involved. Sports really differ in their lifestyle, their competition needs, their traditions and the ways in which their athletes/players eat to be at their best. These chapters discuss the key nutrition issues that arise in a sport, providing specialised strategies to deal with these issues. It reviews applied sports nutrition studies that can answer specific questions in a sport, and provides case histories to illustrate the special nutritional challenges and solutions. Find out how Tour de France riders refuel during their event. Read how gymnasts manage weight control issues, or whether weightlifters need to eat more protein. Read some of the letters written to body building magazines and compare the answers provided in the magazines with the advice of a real sports nutrition expert. Compare the strategies that football players or runners need to use to stay hydrated during their events. This is the first time that I have gained specific insights into the real life world of sports nutrition. I hope this book continues to be updated to provide a great blend of the science and practice of sports nutrition. I would recommend this book to athletes, coaches and parents. But I also think that many sports science and medicine professionals will benefit from the "birdseye" view of sports nutrition.

3 out of 5 stars A little about alot of sports injuries........1998-07-03

This is a useful introductory level book providing an overview of a wide range of musculoskeletal injuries. This is not a book for those involved in the field of sports medicine.
