5 out of 5 stars Walsh's book is great but not perfect........2007-08-18

I have read five books on prostate cancer. This is the best of them. However, it is somewhat biased in favor of open surgery (as opposed to laparoscopic, and robotically assisted laparoscopic surgery). Also, some of his data are outdated, e.g., on p. 317 he quotes from a Mayo Clinic study without mentioning that the study was based on 1991-1993, i.e., pre-PSA-era, data, when men were diagnosed with more advanced disease than they are today. However, these are minor flaws in an otherwise excellent book.

4 out of 5 stars ROY VAUGHAN'S REVIEW.......2007-05-28

I FOUND DR. WALSH'S GUIDE TO SURVING PROSTATE CANCER VERY INFORMATIVE.
THE ONLY NEGATIVE COMMENT I WOULD MAKE IS : THAT THE BOOK WAS A 2001 EDITION, WHICH IS QUITE OLD FOR MEDICAL INFORMATION.

This book was recommended by our doctor, as my husband had been diagnosted with prostate cancer. We found it to be the best information on the subject. It gave us a comprehensive explaination of the procedures and results to be expected. It filled in questions even the doctors did not cover.

5 out of 5 stars Definative Book on Prostate Cancer.......2007-01-15

This is a thorough and helpful reference on Prostate Cancer. It was recommended to us by my husbands urologist after he was diagnosed with prostate cancer last year. It provides through descriptions of the disease and treatment options and recovery process. It was helpful in the making a decision on the type of treatment we would use. We used it as a reference source through out the process of treatment and recovery. Since then we have recomended it to other men facing this diagnosis, and they have found it helpful as well.

5 out of 5 stars Not just for cancer victims!.......2007-01-12

This book was written by Dr. Williams, an eminent and widely published experimental psychologist in the field of learning theory and many other related fields. Dr. Williams was diagnosed in 1995 with a glioblastoma with, for all practical purposes, zero chance of survival. He immediately went on a quest for maximizing his chances of survival by evaluating and combining traditional and nontraditional treatment approaches. Today, in 2007, he is alive and well. This book should be of interest for anyone, even if not affected by cancer personally. I found it a remarkable account of how one can deal with catastrophic diagnoses and seemingly hopeless situations. It also critiques current FDA policies and conventional medical practice by providing a wealth of facts, literature citations, and well-developed logical arguments. There is also a very readable discussion of the statistical approach, written for a lay audience, of experimental design, and of implications for the methods for the social and medical/biological sciences. This book includes a systematic, open, thoughtful, and fair evaluation of so-called alternative treatments. The evaluation of these alternative treatments is so convincing because it was undertaken by someone like Dr. Williams, who knows the scientific approach so well. I call this book "inspirational" for anyone who has to tackle important life-and-death decisions.

5 out of 5 stars Mandatory Reading for Brain Tumor Patients.......2006-11-12

The previous 5-star reviews of this book are right on target, so I mainly just want to echo their praise for this book (in addition to thanking these reviewers for steering me towards this book).

Ben Williams is a true hero for those with brain tumors, and to a large extent other cancers also. Drawing on both his own experience and his extensive review of the literature, he outlines the potentials and serious limitations of conventional medicine, while also informing readers of the vital importance of complementary medicine, especially "off-label" drugs and nutritional supplements.

He advocates a "cocktail" treatment approach which combines many agents, both conventional and unconventional, to simultaneously target multiple cancer mechanisms. This approach is gradually becoming accepted as the best approach, although this is happening far too slowly because of the many problems with how conventional medicine is organized. As a result, you are likely to encounter resistance from your doctors, and perhaps even family members, so be prepared to be very persistent.

If you or someone you care about has been diagnosed with GBM or another type of brain tumor, this should be the first book you read, and you should do so as quickly as your circumstances allow. However, even before you do that, be sure to read Ben's annual update entitled "Treatment Options for Glioblastoma and other Gliomas," which is available online at no cost at the Virtual Trials website.

Also be sure to look up the related and valuable work of Jeanne Wallace (see her Nutritional Solutions website) and John Boik (see the Oregon Medical Press website). Also have a look at my website, which can be found by Googling "brain tumor treatment" and "Alvi".

Good luck and best wishes!

5 out of 5 stars A New Approach, A New Attitude.......2006-09-05

I found this book inspirationally. Not because the author beat the odds in surviving a cancer considered "terminal" by all of his physicians, but because he did it by rationally setting out to explore all of his options and did not just let the "experts" tell him what to do.

The most important lesson from this book for those of us exploring cancer/tumor treatment options is that we have to research beyond what we are likely to hear from our medical specialists. Each of them will have their particular bias (e.g., surgeons tend to want to cut things out, oncologists will tend towards other strategies).

Moreover, as the author points out, the range of treatments the medical specialists are willing to recommend are sharply limited by custom to things that have passed the FDA-mandated stage III clinical trials. Many very promising treatments have only passed stage II trials; and because of cost, never go beyond that. Nor do medical specialists in the U.S. look at successful treatments that are well-accepted by the medical specialists in other countries.

And while this book does discuss "alternative" medicine, that is not the focus. The author does evaluate some "alternative" medical approaches, debunking several of them but also notes where medical science has validated some of them.

Another critical point the author makes is that treating cancer should be like treating AIDs. Because of the probabilistic nature of any single treatment successfully eradicating a cancer, a "cocktail-style" drug regiment has the best chance of succeeding. He makes a powerful and convincing argument that this one change in approach could make a huge difference in reducing the recurrence of cancer and boosting the effectiveness of current treatments.

One more key insight of the author: the large pharmaceutical companies have no financial incentive to pursue promising cancer treatments that they can not patent and thereby recoup their multi-billion dollar investment. Because of that, the author believes many promising treatments are not fully explored. He is sharply critical of government policies that have not closed this gap.

5 out of 5 stars A must-read for brain tumor sufferers.......2006-07-09

Dr. Williams' book is a blow by blow record of how he guided his own survival in spite of his doctors and the constraints of the FDA in overcoming a glioblastoma. His program was well-researched and gives excellent suggestions for options in taking an active part in one's own survival. Should be read by all cancer patients, particularly those suffering with brain tumors. He also published an annual online update of the information contained in the book.

5 out of 5 stars The Bible of GBM.......2006-03-22

I bought this book when my dad was diagnosed with Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM) in late 2005. At first I was skeptical of his harsh criticism of the medical institution as a whole, but as my dad's surgery, chemo and radiation went on, I realized how 100% RIGHT ON Dr. Williams is in this book. You MUST buy this if you know someone suffering from this agressive form of brain cancer. Our family purchased three copies so each of us could have their own for reference. If you don't buy any other book about GBM, buy this one. Dr. Williams has survived ELEVEN years from diagnosis with a type of brain cancer that has an average survival time of 14 months.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2007-09-10

You won't find a lot of technical mumbo jumbo here, but what you will find is a beautifully written book of inspirational stories to soothe the cancer-ridden soul. I tend to shy away from anything that has "chicken soup" on the cover, but this was given by a colleague and I've treasured it. Great gift to newly-diagnosed loved ones and friends.

If you have ever had a difficult time in your life, this is a good book for you. I read this book when I was having a very depressing time, a time where I was not sure I was going to make it out. This book, though, was a gateway for me. Since I don't have cancer, this book didn't inspire me in that way, but it did inspire me. I saw people that had a harder life then I did, and I realized that I would get through, that life would improve for me, and it has. :o)

After my diagnosis with breast cancer five years ago at age 28,this book was part of my salvation. Reading stories of otherssurvival helped me to realize that cancer is beatable. I now recommend this book to other cancer patients.

5 out of 5 stars Faith, hope and love but the greatest of these is love.......2000-05-09

"Malignant", to hear this word when you or someone you love is diagnosed brings feelings of despair, fear and abandonment. The "Chicken Soup for the Soul" series gives you bits of humanity and makes you feel hopeful, trusting and accepting. The stories, poems and essays are put together to give to us encouragement. I myself am a 5 year survivor of stage 2 breast cancer and find the pages filled with new beginnings.

Book Description

When Dr. E. Fuller Torrey was diagnosed with prostate cancer, none of the books he could find was current enough or comprehensive enough to satisfy his need for information. This book is for the hundreds of thousands of other men who each year receive the same frightening diagnosis. It is the book Dr. Torrey wished he had when he was facing the countless questions that a man with prostate cancer, and his family and friends, all confront.

Complete, up-to-date, and readable, the book explains how to come to terms with the diagnosis of prostate cancer, evaluate the severity of the disease, and assess the variety of treatment options and their complications. Many chapters provide information other books barely consider, such as a full discussion of the causes of prostate cancer and an evaluation of other books on the subject. Also included is a summary of the most useful Web sites.

The author mixes his personal experience with factual material, and he maintains a reassuring sense of humor. His advice is practical, with dozens of tips and lists including “Ten Steps to Sanity for Men Recently Diagnosed with Prostate Cancer.” With Dr. Torrey’s book in hand, readers can now tackle all the important decisions about prostate cancer, confident in having the most accurate and complete information available.

torrey is a good writer. Prostate cancer came upon him and this book resulted. It is balanced and hopeful. As a physician I thought it was quite accurate.
Men with prostate cancer or with first degree relatives with the disease could read this tome with benefit.

He has a nice mix of information, but seems to go out of his way not to mention the truly comprehensive sites on the Internet where one can get information [...]

This book does not hold a candle to A Primer on Prostate Cancer: The Empowered Patient's Guide, which is as far as I'm concerned the most comprehensive yet easy-to-read book out there, and useful for years as a reference, also.

This book is a good choice also, if you are like me and find it helpful to read several books on prostate cancer. I think it is a good idea, because the choices you make will affect the rest of your life.

3 out of 5 stars Depending Upon Your Diagnosis, Keep an Open Mind .......2007-01-13

Although technically well done, radiation therapy may not be the answer or at least the whole answer to prostate cancer treatment and survival. You will need to consult a number of current references on the broad subject of prostate cancer, as well as critically surf the Internet. Keep in mind that advances in treatment continue to offer hope.

A thorough and accurate diagnosis is essential to your understanding of what the best course of treatment may be given your age, PSA, Gleason Score, tumor type and stage (metastasis), etc. It is also essential that you discuss your options with your urologist, oncologist, radiologist and surgeon, each of whom may have different recommendations or options depending upon your choice of how you want to live and survive.

I have advanced prostate cancer [initially a PSA of 19.8, Gleason of 9, and (at least) local lymph node metastasis]. My cancer is presently undetectable (i.e., not hormone therapy refractive), and I just celebrated my 5th anniversary post-surgery. My choices, based on the severity of my cancer, included all recommended treatments available to me at the time, namely radical prostatectomy, external beam radiation and hormone ablation therapy. Recent studies have validated those three aggressive treatment regimens for advanced prostate cancer survival.

The side effects of those treatments were very troublesome for the first two years post-surgery. With additional medication for the menopausal-like symptoms (nausea, hot flashes, etc.) and bone calcium depletion effects (osteoporosis), I've been able to adjust to some of them. So, as you may see, the answers may be very different for each of us. Best wishes.

1 out of 5 stars a truly biased view.......2005-06-18

Dr. Dattoli touts brachytherapy above all else, even though studies have shown that surgery offers surer long-term results, important especially for younger men who don't want their cancer to recur down the road. Seed implants can leave areas of the gland undertreated. Also, the idea that radiation causes fewer side effects is bogus. In fact, in addition to urinary and erectile problems, men getting radiation in any form run the risk of bowel problems.

2 out of 5 stars Comments on Surviving Prostate Cancer without surgery.......2005-06-01

The book suffers from a rhetorical bias against surgery -- a bias that leads to little good being said about surgery. A study reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association concluded that if you see a surgeon about treatment options he/she will likely represent surgery; if you initially see a radiologist, the recommendation is likely to be radiation.

As other reviewers have pointed out, a man facing treatment options must determine if surgery that is right for him. IMRT/seeds is a great approach but many patients aren't eligible due to the progression of the cancer. Similarly, expansion of the cancer beyond the prostate gland may mean that surgery is not feasible. But surgery is, in my experience, one of the best options for a T2a or T2b diagnosis. Obviously much depends on the skill of the surgeon but if the surgeon manages to excise all the cancerous tissue, you will be in great shape re recurrence of cancer. The same cannot be said about hormone therapy.

I would make two points about surgery versus other options (all the while emphasizing that the best option depends on the state of your cancer). First, I found that men facing the treatment decision often recoil in horror at the idea of being cut open, nerve bundles being severed and a Foley catheter in their penis for two or three weeks. A tough call. But remind yourself that once the surgery is over and the catheter is out, you are done. Hopefully the surgeon will save enough nerve bundles that you will be able to function sexually, with a little help from the blue pill. I had the surgery and have not taken one bit of medication or treatment since. Luckily for me, the surgeon got it all and my PSA remains zero. You will also have the psychological relief of knowing that the cancerous object is gone from your body. (I was influenced by a certain famous football coach who said, 'as soon as I got the diagnosis I wanted this thing out of me')

Second, surgical techniques are getting better. Robots, cryogenic techniques and other technology are starting to move into the mainstream. Many surgeons have done hundreds of these operations. Success stories are increasing. The same cannot be said of radiation -- it still is likely to devastate surrounding tissue. Hormone therapy can be useful but the patient really needs to talk at length with his doctor about how long the course of treatment will take and the side effects, which can be terrible.

A final bonus re surgery. If it does not succeed, ADT therapy remains an option.

To all prostate patients: evaluate every option carefully and develop a good sense of the prospects for success of each option. Hang in there.

5 out of 5 stars A potentially lifesaving book brimming with information .......2005-05-07

Radiation oncologist Michael J. Dattoli, M.D., Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner Jennifer Cash, and prostate cancer survivor and executive director of the Dattoli Cancer Center and Brachytherapy Institute Donald Kaltenbach present Surviving Prostate Cancer Without Surgery, a potentially lifesaving book brimming with information on the treatment options for those diagnosed with prostate cancer. In addition to possible choices of radiation, radical surgery, or some form of hormonal therapy, Surviving Prostate Cancer Without Surgery offers the latest medical data on state-of-the-art radiation therapy such as seed implants and IMRT (Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy). From its title, Surviving Prostate Cancer Without Surgery may appear to strongly advocate non-surgical approaches, but in fact the title is simply a reaction against the long-standing favoritism of surgery to the extent of perpetuating myths concerning how effective it truly is. Surviving Prostate Cancer Without Surgery gives an evenhanded assessment of various options, including statistical data with an eye toward possible contradictions or innacuracies hidden within the numbers. The goal is to provide the reader with as much information as possible, in clear, easy-to-understand terms, concerning prostate cancer, how it can be treated, why some men are more or less likely candidates for surgery than others, the risks involved in different types of treatment including risks of temporary or permanent incontience or impotence and how to get help - not only medical help, but also emotional and financial help. A "must-read" for anyone researching or personally grappling with difficult questions and problems concerning prostate cancer, the better to confront one's doctor and discuss options with as much knowledge about the situation as possible. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent For Men and For Women.......2005-04-21

This book gave both me and my wife hope and direction. It helped us to understand my prostate cancer diagnosis (PSA 6.4, Gleason 7) and it clarified my doctor's advice about the best treatments. For us, it's on a par with Dr. Susan Love's breast cancer book. Both are really excellent because they give you the kind of information you need to ask your doctors the right questions. They're the gold standard of cancer books. This is our second time having to face the 'Big C' together and we're going to beat it again!!

5 out of 5 stars Best book on hte subject.......2007-10-06

I purchased four books on the subject of prostate cancer; this book by Patrick Walsh is clearly the best. Very detailed. I subsequently went to Johns Hopkins and Walsh will be my surgeon. Walsh is a legend. Another doctor told me Walsh was a 'magical' surgeon. His book is the best.

5 out of 5 stars A "must read" for anyone with prostate disease........2007-09-19

Dr. Patrick Walsh is a urologist at Johns Hopkins in Maryland. He has written a concise and comprehensive book about prostate disease. It is important to get as much information as possible when being treated for any disease, and also, physicians are often pressed for time and we sometimes tend to forget the questions we had intended to ask. No problem - you'll find most answers in this wonderful book. I recommend it without reservation.

5 out of 5 stars Guide to Surviving Prostate Cancer.......2007-09-17

This book is a great resource for any man over forty to read. It answers the questions of prostate care, problems, treatments; and if worse comes to worse the treatments of prostate cancer, side affects and outcomes of the various treatments. For those who have been newly diagnosed with prostate cancer, this is very great book to help one understand the alternatives for treatment and assist in making those life decisions.

As Dr. Walsh states, most men will have some form of prostate problems in their life, for this reason I would recommend it as a good read. For family members, Dr. Walsh's book, The Prostate A Guide for Men and the Women Who Love Them, is another great resource.

5 out of 5 stars Shines Light on the Dark.......2007-09-09

Having just been diagnosed with prostate cancer, I began searching for any information I could find. In early stage cancer, you have to make a decision on surgery or radiation therapy. The doctors can't make that decision for you. You need accurate and timely information to make an intelligent decision. You also need to understand the jargon associated with this cancer and its treatments such as BTH, IBRT, IGRT, Gleason Scale, PSA levels as well as complex and simple PSA. They all relate to survivability depending on the course you elect. If you, or someone you love, has been diagnosed, this book is an absolute MUST READ. With it I made my decision!!

5 out of 5 stars Concise and Thorough...Up to date .......2007-09-09

Excellent overview of the entire spectrum of this disease. Very up to date info as of mid 2007 on most topics. As an MD afflicted with this problem I found Walsh's book more useful than medical review searches, texts, etc. Well organized and understandable to a reasonably educated lay person.

5 out of 5 stars A True Bible for Cancer Survival.......2002-12-28

Margie Levine's very personal and inspirational story offers hope along with pragmatic steps to empower one's self to take charge of their own medical challenge. I read this book because I have several friends who are dealing with their own struggles with cancer. After completing Margie's book, I felt it most certainly would give them a new perspective on coping and taking charge of their own situations. This is a terrific book and I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars I could not put this book down!.......2001-11-02

I accidentally discovered this inspiring book and could not put it down. It is not only one woman's lifesaving testimony, it is truly a roadmap for finding rejuvenation in each day! As both a health education teacher and social worker, Margie offers a practical and integrated aproach toward self-healing which we can all learn from. In 1989, diagnosed with deadly asbestos cancer, Margie was given only 6 months to live. With sheer grit and determination, she persuaded Boston doctors to set up her own medical protocol which she then developed into her 41 steps to wellness. She is truly a role model for all of us. I truly enjoyed it and highly recommend it to all my clients and everyone I know. Chapters include: creating the best possible team of physicians and loved ones to help you to heal, maximizing nutrition using veggie dosing, using visualization to create your own affirmation tape, ridding your cells of harbored anger with a 6 point forgiveness program, building up endorphins by seeking joy, and using creative meditation techniques. I'm certainly now eating lots more brocolli!

5 out of 5 stars Surviving Cancer.......2001-11-02

I needed this book and was very satisfied with its contents. Having recently been diagnosed with colon cancer and very disappointed with the limited conventional options recommended by my oncologist, I was looking for guidance in how to complement my chemotherapy treatments. To this end I have purchased and browsed through or read a couple dozen books on "how to survive cancer." Levine's book is the most practical and encouraging, the one I have used most faithfully. I am doing many of the things she suggests and feel that my recovering health is due to pursuing the combined mental/physical/spiritual approach that she advocates. Margie is the longest living survivor of a rare and aggressive cancer, demonstrating that her ideas can be very effective. What I like best in her book is, frankly, how easy it is to read. Cancer is confusing, to say the least, and I wanted straight forward information. Second, she makes it clear right up front that you need to be your own medical advocate, taking control of the direction in which your treatment goes and who you allow to treat you. Third, she encourages alternative and complementary treatment to conventional treatment and provides lots of ideas that she has had success with. Fourth, instead of "prescribing" her regimine for you, she encourages the reader to do what resonates with him or her and make their own regimine. She describes how what she did made her feel in a candid, confidential manner and I appreciated hearing of her pain and heartbreak, her joy and scuccess through her ordeal. This provided companionship to me as I experienced similar things. Throughout the book she encourages the reader to live life, not just fight cancer. This is good advice and Margie gave me the courage and "permission" (if you know what I mean) to think and act beyond being a cancer patient. Margie remained a person and encouraged people to interface with her as such. I too am remaining a person and enjoy being treated as such. I recommend this book to cancer patients and their families-- it will give you ideas that can improve the quality of your life now and complement conventional care that just may end up saving your life for many years to come. It is the best book I have found for surviving cancer.

5 out of 5 stars Best I've read.......2007-04-14

I too am recently diagnosed, and have bought and read quite a few different books on this topic. This was the best one that I've read thus far. It has helped me from making some really serious (bad) and irreversible decisions. Highly recommended. The other one that I thought was really good was "Eating Your Way to Better Health-The Prostate Forum Nutrition Guide" by Charles E. Myers, Jr., M.D. & Sara Sgarlat Steck, R.T. & Rose Sgarlat Myers, PT., Ph.D. God's blessing on you all.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and original information on the subject.......2007-03-29

I have read much on the subject, but I learned much original information from this book. This book will help you avoid urologists' reflex to take out your prostate the minute you get an elevated PSA level. After reading this book, it becomes clear this is the last thing one should do.

Dr. Hennenfent educated me that prostate diseases are sequential. Men first experience prostate inflammation (prostatitis). Then, the inflammation degenerates into enlargement (BPH). Enlargement turns into prostate cancer. Both prostatitis and BPH do cause false positive high PSA levels. Therefore, he recommends that anyone receiving a high PSA level diagnostic should first be checked for the other two preceding conditions (prostatitis and BPH) instead of incurring prostate biopsies for investigating cancers. He indicates later in the book that biopsies may cause in certain cases the cancer to spread.

The author explains how BPH comes about (blockage of acinus ducks leading to bursting of acinus sacks). His explanation is completely different than what I had learned so far (BPH is due to age related hormonal change that causes the prostate to grow in size and harden). Maybe both explanations are valid and cumulative. But, again Dr. Hennenfent shared knowledge I had not come across elsewhere.

This book is a manifesto against radical prostatectomy and the urology establishment. The author cites many scientific papers to make his case that radical prostatectomy impairs quality of life (impotence, incontinence) and does not extend life. I had read the same thing from other sources as well. He further demonstrates how the urology establishment has manipulated statistics to arrive at flawed favorable outcomes. The few rigorous studies done without any statistical bias clearly demonstrated that prostatectomy did not provide any life extension benefit over just watchful waiting. And, this does not account for the abrupt drop in the mentioned quality of life associated with prostatectomy. Also none of the celebrity prostate cancer survivors he mentioned opted for this procedure including Robert Giuliani and Andy Grove.

In other chapters, Dr. Hennenfent spends much time explaining all the different tests and rating levels related to prostate cancer including the PSA test, the Gleason scale, and the TNM and ABCD staging systems. He fleshes out the debate regarding these tests effectiveness and accuracy. And, he goes into details as to their implications always referring to the relevant scientific sources.

The author's coverage of watchful waiting and active non-invasive therapy (ANIT) is also very informative. The chapters on hormone blockade and seed implant are especially interesting. A combination of those two therapies appears to be the preferred cure for many of the celebrity prostate cancer survivors he mentioned.

Given all the research he has done the chapter where the author shares how he plans to deal with prostate cancer is most helpful. It flows from the information he shares in the book. He would first use watchful waiting and then consider hormone blockade, and different forms of radiotherapy, including seed implant, if necessary.

If you want to further study this subject, I also strongly recommend the following books: "The Cancer Handbook" by Lynne Mc Taggart, "Should I be tested for cancer?" by H. Gilbert Welch, and "The Prostate Cancer Protection Plan" by Dr. Bob Arnot.

1 out of 5 stars Non-expert waffle. Better books on same theme exist.......2006-10-18

Has the author of this book had prostate cancer? No, he hasn't (although he claims some relatives have had it). Is this author an expert in prostate cancer? No, he's not a surgeon, not an oncologist, not a urologist, he's not even a practicing MD.

I suggest buying the much clearer and better written "Surviving Prostate Cancer without Surgery: The New Gold Standard Treatment That Can Save Your Life and Lifestyle". It's cheaper too, and written with the help of real experts.

5 out of 5 stars This book should be read.......2006-03-24

A flaw in the medical care system is that most patients diagnosed with prostate cancer (PCa) are diagnosed by urologists -- surgeons with a surgical specialty which admittedly until 15-years ago was probably the most effective treatment for localized prostate cancer. Accordingly, too many newcomers leave the office with an appointment for what is a highly destructive surgical procedure, not knowing that other treatment options are available which are effective and have fewer side effects.

Not all urologists are unwilling to mention the options (my experience). Nevertheless, this point in the PCa journey is the time to hit the brakes, do lots and lots of research, get second opinions and consider options.

This is a book that should be read. The author articulately and systematically describes available treatments, their advantages and disadvantages. Quite possibly, no other disease has so many treatment options. A little knowledge can result in much empowerment.

5 out of 5 stars An extraordinary blueprint for maximizing cancer survival.......2005-06-13

In Staying Alive, Dr. Brenda Hunter gives cancer patients an extraordinary blueprint for maximizing their chances of surviving cancer. As a stage 3B lung cancer survivor, I employed many of these strategies 14 years ago. But I had to read multiple books to find many of them and Dr. Hunter offers such insightful, educated advice beyond what I understood at that time. I still find her book helpful in my efforts to stay well. And what a gift for those going through the experience now to have such good information all in one book. Dr. Hunter's experience as a Ph.D., a cancer survivor and a Christian give her a perspective few authors of books on cancer, no matter how well intentioned, can provide. I really love this book. As I use my cancer experience to help others who are now beginning their cancer journey, Staying Alive is at the top of my recommended list of "must reads". Anyone with cancer seriously looking for ways to contribute to their own wellness will benefit from reading this book.
