Excellent Book!.......2007-07-14
This is an excellent book if you would like to learn more about natural remedies and how to use them to treat various ailments. The pictures and illistrations are wonderful. There is so much information packed into this book. The only draw back it that the herbs are not listed in alphabetic order (they are in order if you know the scientific name) so you have to use the index a lot, but that's not so bad. A great book to have in anyone's natural remedy library.
Beautiful as well as informative.......2007-05-14
This book is organized in an easy to use logical manor. A lot of information with beautiful illustrations for each herb are in easy to view sections and all on one page. Step by Step instructions on how to make products are easy to understand and follow. The Historical section is an added bonus. There is a number of different glossaries and indexes so things may be looked up in different ways (e.g.: by ailment or plant name)that may bit confusing until you get use to it. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this book to anyone. It is a beautiful and informative addition to any library.
Lovely pics, needs more!.......2007-04-03
I like how this book has color photos of many of the herbs and that it includes instructions on how to make remedies as well. The extended list in the back had some photos, but I wish it would have had one for all of the listed herbs to make it more complete. Worth the money!
My medicinal herb bible.......2006-11-30
I have used herbal medications exclusively for about 10 years now, and I depend on this book as my herb "bible." It is always smart to double-check medicinal advice from several sources, but I have never found this book to be wrong or lacking in pertinent information. It is very well arranged, and information is cross-referenced which adds to the ease of use.

Book Report:
The Encyclopedia of Herbal Medicine by Andrew Chevallier, FNIMH
Publisher: Dorling Kindersley, Limited
I first decided to buy the book in hopes that it would be a good, up to the minute, desk reference on Medicinal Herbs. It turned out to be a little more of a text book to study by and what some book publishers call a coffee table book. A coffee table book is a book as large as a magazine, hardbound and full of color pictures, which would be entertaining even to people not interested in the subject yet. It is a good study help because of the sections in the back on how to use and administer herbs.
The first section tells about how medicinal herbs work by affecting different systems of the body with a number of chemicals working together to effect change. The book does divide the body's system up a little differently than the Heart of Herbs Course, Making it a little confusing for those of us trying to study both texts at the same time. The authors system is:
The Skin, using herbs that are Antiseptic, Astringent and depurative.
Immune System, using herbs that are Immune stimulants
Respiratory System, using herbs that are Antiseptic, antibiotic, Expectorant,
Demulcent, and spasmolytics
Endocrine Glands using herbs that are adaptogens, hormonally active, and
Emmenagogues
Urinary System, using herbs that are antiseptic, astringent and diuretic.
Musculoskeletal System using herbs that are analgesic, Anti-inflammatory, and
Antispasmotic.
Nervous System using herbs that are nerviness, relaxants, stimulants and tonics.
Circulation and heart using herbs that are cardiotonics, circulatory stimulants,
Diaphoretics, and spasmolytics.
And the Digestive Organs using antiseptics, astringents, cholagogues, choleretics
Demulcents, hepatics, laxatives and stomachics.
Having all of the systems spread out with the medicinal actions associated with each one helps me to understand the medicinal action a little better.
The next section explains active constituents. I never noticed it before but these active ingredients are arranged in ten basic classes: Phenols, Volatile Oils, Flavonoids, Tannins, Proanthocyanins, Coumarins, Saponins, Anthraquinones, Cardiac Glycosides, Cyanogenic Glycosides, Polysaccharides, Glucosilinates, Bitters, Alkaloids, Vitamins and minerals. The last two, most of us all ready understand.
After a short discussion on quality control of herbs, there is a long history of Herbalism. People have been using herbs at least since 3000 BC, in Egypt, the Middle East, India and China. In the early times, Herbalism was connected to spiritualism, but it began to break away about 500BC. Hippocrates (460-377 BC) believed that an illness was a natural rather than a supernatural occurrence. Herbalism was well founded by trade between Europe and Asia through India and the Middle East from 300 to 600 BC. In Europe up through the so-called dark ages, people seemed to have a very good understanding of Herbalism. On the other side of the world an Herbalism tradition developed in the Maya, Aztec and Inca Civilizations unbeknownst to the Europeans.
Between 1000 and 1400 AD, Universities, Hospitals and Medical schools were established which used Herbalism and in that time period Herbal medicine was the only medicine. International trade during the middle ages contributed to the development of herbal tradition, by making formerly exotic herbs available everywhere. Following the discovery of digitalis in the herb foxglove by Dr. William Withering, in 1795, techniques were developed to extract the chemicals out of herbs in order to use the basic medicines and gain better control over quality.
From the early 19th century, laboratory produced medicines began to supplant mother nature as a source of medications. In 1803, narcotic alkaloids were extracted from opium poppies and a year later insulin was extracted form Elecampane, and in 1838 salicylic acid (Aspirine) was extracted from willow bark. From 1850 to 1900, conventional medicine established it's own monopoly by trying to outlaw the use of medicines by any one not trained in a medical school.
As late as 1930, 90% of the medicines sold in drug stores, were of herbal origin, but in the last 50 years synthetic chemicals have taken over the medical industry. Now the tide is beginning to turn back toward Herbalism, due in part to bad mistakes and bad experiences in the use of chemicals such as thalidomide and in the poor state of health in Western Societies.
The next section of the book deals with the various herbal traditions, which have developed in such places as Europe, India, China, Africa, Australia, North America, and South America. Each location developed a slightly different tradition based on local tradition, religion and plants, as a combination of what was locally grown and what was brought in from other parts of the world.
The center section of the book is what I really wanted. It is divided into two parts, the first is a Materia Medica of the 100 most used herbs in detail with full color pictures of the herbs and the preparations. The habitat, constituents, actions, traditional and current uses are covered for each herb. The next section has another 450 herbs in it that are less commonly used or used only in a few places. The same type of information is included but not in such great detail as in the previous section. The only drawback to the Materia Medica sections is that the herbs are in alphabetical order but only by their Latin names.
The first herb is `Yarrow', because the Latin name for the plant is: Achillea millefolium and that is first in the alphabet. That would decrease the value of the book as a reference tool except that there is a General Index beginning on page 323 that lists all of the herbs in the book by their common names, even for the herb that have more than one common name. When I looked up Yarrow, it gave me page 56, in bold type, and that is where the material medica for Achillea millefolium is located.
I don't usually read an index to a book unless I am using it as a reference, but in this book, I noticed that behind the General Index is an Index of Herbs by Ailment. In this index, one can look up an ailment like Blood Pressure, High and be directed to: Blackcurrant 261, Buckwheat 301, eggplant 270, Garlic 301, 319, Ginger 301, Ginkgo 102, Hawthorn 90, Indian Snake root 260, mistletoe 283, olive 240. That index may be worth the $25.00 that the book costs to someone who is practicing as an herbalist trying to choose an herb to recommend for a particular ailment, especially if one herb does not help and a new one must be chosen.
In between the herb (material medica) sections and the index, there is a section giving the procedures for making infusions, decoctions, Tinctures (they make no difference between Tinctures and Extracts), ointments, creams and poultices. The procedures are very well illustrated as is the rest of the book, but the only thing new that they add is the use of a wine press to separate the oil or alcohol from the herbs after the infusion or extraction process. The last section before the index is an abbreviated guide of health problems and the herbal remedies that can be used to treat each group of problems.
I would recommend this book to just about any one but a very experienced herbalist. It is entertaining, easy to understand, and very informative.

Exactly what I wanted.......2007-06-06
I have been looking for this book for over a year, and hadn't been able to find it. It is just what I was looking for and has great information, and really nice pictures.
Faithful Companion for Over 10 Years.......2007-05-01
This book has been on my most used shelf for over ten years. It has some shortcomings that are easily augmented by anyone with a good herbal library. I love the layout and medicinal information as well as the history of the different herbal systems in the world. Great Book!
Pretty good ..........2001-07-04
... if you like your herbs from the herb store, that is. And if you like the TCM view of things.
I prefer books about herbs that I can grow myself, or pick in my back yard. I'm really not all that enthusiastic about books about exotics that I have to buy from far away places.
I also prefer books that focus on herbs used in the western herbal tradition. This book has just a tad too much of an emphasis on Chinese herbs for my tastes.
Finally, I _like_ books with one single, sometimes enormous, index. This one has two. I'm always looking things up in the wrong one, in books like this.
YMMV (Your Mileage May Vary), of course.
Excellent but not the most recent version...........2000-12-11
THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF MEDICINAL PLANTS by Andrew Chevallier is a relatively comprehensive source of information about herbal uses for healing. This is not the most recent volume by this author, however. The 2000 version is more comprehensive and includes the most current information about research associated with herbal medicinal uses.
A less expensive and highly useful book on herbs and their uses is available from Rodale, entitled, ILLUSTRATED ENCYCLOPEDIA OF HERBS. The Rodale book includes information missing from this version of Chevallier's book concerning negative effectives of herbs including accidental poisoning owing to misuse or problems with plant identification. Also, Rodale has been the the organic growing business for several decades and offers information about plant horticulture. Chevallier's book is better illustrated, and filled with many colorful photographs but relatively less text (ratio of 1:4 pages for each item).
Unlike Ody's book, THE COMPLETE MEDICAL HERBAL, the Chevallier book contains information about native American herbs such as Cimicifuga Racemosa (Squawroot, Black Cohash). THE COMPLETE BOOK OF HERBS by Leslie Bremmness does not contain the comprehensive coverage of medicinal uses, but it does provide much information about medicinal and other uses such as pot pourri and sachet making, paper making, and food preparation.
Best Source there is for medicinal plant information!!.......2000-10-14
From its detailed descriptions of almost all medicinal plants, to its step by step instructions for different preparations, this book has it all!! It tells you where the plant is from even the history behind todays uses. If your interested in healing with plants... this book is for you!

The Healing Power of Herbs: The Enlightened Person's Guide to the Wonders of Medicinal Plants
There were quite a lot of common herbs that were not represented in this book. Also, the information given per each herb was not very complete. I was rather dissapointed in this book.
"THE" DEFINITIVE & COHERENT GUIDE FOR UNDERSTANDING MEDICINAL HERBS & THEIR APPLICATIONS.......2006-01-25
I FEEL I MUST FIRST SAY: TO DO "NO HARM" MUST COME FIRST & DOES IN THIS GUIDEBOOK!
I read a large number of alternative health and medical texts and some are better than others. I borrow as many as possible from the library, but Michael Murray's books, along with James Duke's, are among the few that I purchase and keep handy at all times. The approach of these two men are always safety first, and they follow the first cardinal rule of medicine which is to do "NO HARM". For that reason I feel a level of security that allows me to make the leaps of faith needed in order to try new things that will affect the health of myself and my loved ones.
IN A NUTSHELL: A terrific read, but very useful and efficient too!
The Healing Power of Herbs, contains detailed and coherent discussions about the effects and practical applications of 37 medicinal herbs and 34 common ailments treated by them. A short history of "herbal medicine" precedes these discussions.
WHAT IT IS:
SECTION 1: Pages 1-28
INTRODUCTION: BASIC HISTORY OF HERBAL MEDICINE & PREPARATIONS
SECTION 2: Pages 29-344
MATERIA MEDICA: In alphabetical order from Aloe Vera to Valerian, 37 of the most useful and commonly used herbs are examined. For each Herb examined, the same organization of the discussion is utilized as follows:
GENERAL DESCRIPTION, CHEMICAL COMPOSITION, HISTORY & FOLK USE, PHARMACOLOGY - [effects are itemized and examined in detail], CLINICAL APPLICATIONS - [what ailments the herb may be used for -each ailment is examined as it pertains to the particular herb], DOSAGE - [different forms of the herb and uses are detailed in regard to dose], TOXICITY - [usually described as the toxic effects on lab animals or the lethal dose in 50% of the cases {LD50}].
REFERENCES - [There is a long list of references at the end of each herbs discussion, which both validates the information and gives one other places to research the particular herb.]
SECTION 3: Pages 345-390
RECOMMENDED HERBS FOR SOME SPECIFIC HEALTH CONDITIONS - Again there is a repeated structure:
AILMENT - alphabetically listed, is described to aid in its identification and to illustrate its seriousness. After the description there is an "Herbal Recommendation" paragraph for each ailment. The use of multiple herbs in combination makes
section 3 important and indispensible when dealing with a specific ailment, as section 2 deals with the herbs and their actions individually rather than their uses in combination with other agents.
At the end of the ailments' discussion, there are references for each specific ailment which can lead one to further study quite easily.
GLOSSARY: Page 393-402
INDEX: Page 403-410
BOTTOM LINE: Works well with the "Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine", Revised 2nd Ed. by M. Murray and J. Pizzorno
Currently value-priced at $12.95 through Amazon or other discounters, this is an extreme value and a great read filled with useful Herbal information. Bear in mind that this book, originally written in 1992 and later revised and expanded in 1995, is starting to need a major update. There are herbs like Ephedra that are included in this book, but have been taken off the market due to safety concerns. Though I have the revised second edition I would buy a third edition of this book in a heartbeat.
Herb book that is ahead of its time.......2002-07-05
This is the one herb book I would take with me to a deserted island :)
I've had it for years and it amazes me how ahead of its time it is. I've even found articles on coleus and guggul. It's hard to find info on these.
He includes both folklore and research information.
this is the best!.......2001-03-18
I have owned this book for 5 years. I still use it on a regular basis. Its one of the best books on basic herbs you can buy. I can't even begin to count how many times it has saved us from a trip to the doctor. Get this book if you want to keep yourself healthy naturally.
Best In Its Class.......2000-07-27
The Healing Power of Herbs is the most credible and useful herb book on the market, helpful for the consumer and the health professional alike. I especially appreciate the discussions of clinical trials, the medical journal references, and the easy-to-reference summaries of uses and dosages of herbs. This is *the* book I turn to when I have a question about herbal medicine. If you're only going to have one book on herbal medicine on your shelf, this is the one!

Doctors and Nurses Agree This Is The Most Comprehensive Encyclopedia Of Medicinal Plants.......2005-08-02
I spend a lot of time showing this book to people that I meet, and have had the chance to get a lot of reactions. What follows are answers to questions, and reactions from the many people I have shown this Encyclopedia of Medicinal Plants to.
"Medicinal herbs, ignored during some ages and even dismissed in others, have been waiting quietly and patiently for several thousand years for humanity to turn their eyes to them in order to know, to study, to use and - why not? - to love them.... After a period of brilliant scientific developments in which therapy science - the science of healing - has built al its hopes on the basis of sophisticated laboratories and highly technological devices, the interest in Nature's simple remedies is quickly growing. It is not only an interest in plants, but also in water (hyrotherapy), in sun (heliotherapy) and in medicinal use of muds and clays (geotherapy).... All human beings need some help for their many diseases and illnesses, and this help presently comes from nature, from simple country herbs. These humble plants, that almost forgotten wild tree, the "simples" - a former name for medicinal herbs - hide the best medicines that Nature may offer for mankind's health." - George D. Pamplona-Roger, M.D.
Thus begins the introduction of this book. As promised, this book deals with more than just medicinal plants, it even includes instructions for natural remedies that dont need a medicinal plant, such as hydrotherapy.
One thing that you'll notice when using this book is that it is lavishly illustrated with real photos of the uses of the medicinal plants. Each medicinal plant is shown in a drawing that makes it easy to recognize. This is a large format book, the pages are 8.5" x 11", on good quality glossy (but not reflective) paper.
Volume 1 of the book covers generalities such as: The Vegetal World, including: Types of Leaves, Anatomy of Leaves, Types of Roots, Types of Stems, Types of Inflorescences, and Anatomy of a Flower.
Chapter 2 is about Gathering and Preservation of medicinal plants. It gives practical instructions on how to store and preserve medicinal plants to ensure their potency and efficacy (in other words, making sure they continue to work well).
Chapter 3 covers a wide variety of ways to prepare and use medicinal plants. The table of contents lists these sections: The Art of Preparing Herbal Teas, Advantages and Disadvantages of Extracts, Method of Application of Fomentations, The Safe Use of Medicinal Herbs. But the chapter goes into many more methods of using medicinal plants, and it gives in depth instructions on exactly how to do each use. The uses covered include: Baths, Cold Extracts, Compresses, Decoctions, Enemas, Extracts, Eyedrops, Eye Irrigation, Fomentation, Friction, Gargles, Herbal Teas, Infusion, Irrigation of the Eye, Irrigation (Vaginal), Juices, Liniments, Lotions, Powders, Ointments, Poultices, Steam Baths, Syrup, Tinctures, and Vaginal irrigations. The chapter ends with a colorful section titled "Safe use of Medicinal Herbs - The First Step is to Adopt A Healthy Lifestyle". It list 6 points to be aware of, and practical cases.
Chapter 4 covers Active Principles, such as Photosynthesis, Procedures to Obtain Essences, and Aromatherapy.
Chapter 5 covers Plant Toxicity.
Chapter 6 is "From the Plant to the Medicine", and includes these sections: How to Obtain the Best Results from Plants, A Pioneer of Modern Phytotherapy, Medicinal Herbs in America, How the Properties of Plants were Discovered.
Part two of Volume 1 starts with a description of the icons used on the pages, and the descriptions of plants pages. It then goes through each section of the body showing which medicinal plants are best for each section of the body. Sections of the body covered in Volume 1 include:
7. Plants for the Eyes
8. Plants for the Nervous System
9. Plants that Stimulate
10. Plants for the Mouth
11. Plants for the Throat, Nose and Ears
12. Plants for the Heart
13. Plants for the Arteries
14. Plants for the Veins
15. Plants for the Blood
16. Plants for the Respiratory System
17. Plants for the Digestive System
18. Plants for the Liver and the Gall Bladder
Volume 2 continues on with additional parts of the body:
19. Plants for the Stomach
20. Plants for the Intestine
21. Plants for the Anus and the Rectum
22. Plants for the Urinary System
23. Plants for the Male Sexual Organs

25. Plants for the Metabolism
26. Plants for the Locomotive System
27. Plants for the Skin
28. Plants for Infectious Diseases
29. Plants for other Ailments.
There is also a glossary, units of measure, source of illustrations, bibliography, and alphabetical index.
Each volume then includes, at the beginning, a 4 page Index of Diseases. This will quickly help you find the medicinal plants for a certain condition. Here is an example of just some of the diseases mentioned: Abcesses, Ache, Kidney (see Lumbago), Ache, rheumatic (see Rheumatic pain), Ache, Stomach, Aches and Neuralgia, Acid, Uric, excess of (see Gout), Acidity, Stomach, Acne, Affections, Heart, AIDS, Alcoholism, Alimentary intoxication, see Salmonellosis, Alkalizing plants, Allergy, Alteration, heartbeat rate, see Arrhythmia, alternatives to coffeee, alternatives to tea, amebic dysentery (see Amebiasis), Amebiases, Anal eczema, Anal Fissure, Analgesic plants, anaphrodisiac plants, anemia, Angina pectoris, Ango pectoris, anorexia, anthocyanines, antidiarrheic plants, antirrheumatic plants, antiscorbutic plants, antispasmodic plants, atitussive plants, anxiety, anxiolytics, aphonia, aphrodisiac plants, appetite, excess of (see Bulimia), Appetite, lack of, Arrhythmia, Arteriosclerosis, Arthritis, Uric (see Gouty Arthritis), Arthritism, Arthrosis, ascitis (see fluid in the abdomen), asthenia, asthma, heart attack, back ache (see Lumbago), bad breath, bad taste in mouth, balsamic plants, skin beauty, etc.

After showing these important resources, I then leaf through the book showing the beautiful illustrations of the parts of plants, types of leaves, anatomy of leaves, and types of roots. These are important to understand what parts of plants have been found to have medicinal properties.
One of the best features of this book is the attention to safety. I point this out in many places as I am showing the book. For example, page 47, has this information about fresh use that is required of some plants: "Some plants, soon after being gathered, undergo certain enzymatc-catalytic chemical reactions, which in some cases destroy their active components, and in others change them into poisonous substances, as occurs in the watercress, for example. These plants must therefore always be used fresh. They are the following: Cypress, Hedge garlic, Hemp agrimony, Hound's tongue, Houseleek, Ivy, Mouse Ear, Radish, Scurvy Gress, Tormentil, Vervain, Watercress." Six practical suggestions are given on how to gather medicinal plants. Instructions are given on the parts to be gathered, and extensive advice on preservation and drying is given, along with a list of plants that require a drying process that causes fermentation.
As I mentioned earlier, there is an extensive chapter on the methods for preparing and using plants. This section also includes information about dosages for herbal teas, and child dosages. One person I showed this book remarked at how impressed this book shows dosages, unlike many other herbal medicinal books which don't tell how much to use. There is a discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of extracts, and excellent illustrations of things like the external uses of medicinal plants, how to dissolve them in a fatty substance to improve absorption, and how to give a hip bath, foot bath and hand bath.
Chapter 5 is about cautions of plant toxicity, and is a chapter devoted to safety with medicinal plants. It gives cautions related to arterial hypertension, breast feeding, children, colitis, digestive dysfunctions, gastritis, genital-urinary dysfunctions, heart dysfyunctions, heart-circulatory dysfunctions, hemorrhoids, hyperthyroid goiter, intestinal occlusion, liver dysfunction, menstruation, nephritis, nervousness, pregnancy, prostate adenoma, stomach, urinary dysfunction, and weakness.
Chapter 6 has an interesting discussion about the discoveries of medicinal plants and their properties. This chapter again keeps safety in mind by debunking many common urban legends concerning medicinal plants.
The first 123 pages of volume one with all the information just highlighted could easily be a practical and valuable book all on their own. But the book does not stop there. Part Two of Volume 1 is where the listings of the medicinal plants begin. The encyclopedia uses a number of icons and tables that describe plants, body organs and ailments. There are icons to show with parts of the plants are to be used, and icons for various anatomical parts of the body that the medicinal plants work with.
The discussion of plants in part two groups the plants by section of the body according to their most common or best use. Each section of the body begins with a list of diseases and the medicinal plants specific to those diseases, and the effect each plant has on the disease. For example:
Chapter 7 Plants for the Eyes
Disease: Conjunctivitis and Blepharitis: Plants: Cornflower, carrot (invigorates and moisturizes eye mucosa), red eyebright, herb robert, tea, bennet, oak tree, witch hazel, yellow melilot, common plantain, garden violet, woodruff, fennel, german camomile, perslane, grapevine, rose, elm tree, brier hip, black elder, etc.
Disease: Keratitis: Carrot, Red eyebright, grapevine
Disease: Sty: Cornflower, oak tree, grapevine
Disease: Diminished Vision: carrot, bilberry
The article on cornflower is a good example of the detail given for each plan. Two pages cover Cornflower "A good remedy for your eyes". A full page length illustration of the plant is given, as well as an actual photo of the plant. 5 different methods of preparing and using cornflower are described. There is a general introduction to the plant "Cornflower covers the golden grain prairies from late Spring onwards with its gracious blue flowers. From ancient times, the seeds of crops have been mixed with cornflower seeds, and have been dispersed all over the world...." Properties and indications (reasons to use it) are described. For each condition, there is a list of which of the 5 preparation methods should be used.
As is done with every plant in this encyclopedia, synonyms are given (in this case, bluebottle, cyani, bachelor's button, bluebonnet, blue centaury), as well as names in French (Bleuet), and Spanish (Azulejo, Aciano, Ojeras). Habitats and a botanical description, along with the parts of the plant used medicinal, is given.
As I mentioned earlier about safety, this book has the latest information available about interactions, or overuses of the medicinal plants. Every plant with any such issue has a warning box prominent on each page. For example, the page on Peppermint has a ping warning box saying: "Warning: Peppermint essence, in high doeses, can provoke insomnia and irritability. When inhaled in high doses it can cause laryngeal spasms in children." For Butterbur, there is this warning: "Butterbur contains variable amounts of alkaloids which may be toxic for the liver. Due to this, the German Commission E for Human Medicine, phytotherapy section, does not recommend its use, although they do not ban it."
This book is designed with a focus to allow you to safely use medicinal plants.
Many doctors are beginning to realize that health is not about how many pills they give you. They are realizing that natural medicine, and safe use of medicinal plants, works as well for many patients as expensive pharmaceuticals. This is the book you need on your journey to use natural medicinal plant alternatives.
Many doctors and nurses have bought copies of this book from me for their offices and homes. Some of my customers have included a trauma surgeon, head nurse of a cardiac unit, and the head nurse of a Kaiser hospital. Most of my customers are ordinary people who desire to learn how to take better care of their own health. This book can be an excellent springboard to discussion with your own doctor about any conditions that concern you.

Customer Reviews:
Great book.......2005-03-09
I have been using the two books by I.A. Ross in the library, and hopefully will buy my own copies soon. The organization of information is excellent. There is a similarly titled book by van Wyk and Michael Wink, which I bought sometime ago before I discovered the books by Ross. The book by Wyk and Wink, with its misleading title,is quite inferior to the books by Ivan Ross. My main grouse with the Wyk and Wink book was its over-representation of European plants, considering the relative small size of Europe and the small number of people there who rely on herbal medicines, compared to the hundreds of millions of people who depend on medicinal plants in Africa, Asia and South America. In any case, most of the "medicinal plants of the world" are in those continents. The second reviewer should be quite pleased with th book by Wyk and Wink, with its near-equation of "world" with Europe-North America. One distinguishing feature of these excellent books by Ross is its information on the traditional medicinal preparations of these plants. This is information you rarely come across in the so-called Encyclopedias of Herbs published to profit from what the publishers obviously treat as a fad. The choice of plants by Ivan Ross is quite consistent because they are mostly plants used by millions for whom herbal therapy is not just 'alternative therapy'. The scientific information collected in these books make these books invaluable reference books for a wide range of professionals
A very interesting book for the scientist or layperson........1999-08-22
As a layperson interested in the value of medicinal plants, I found this book very interesting. Even though it is primarily a book geared toward the scientific community, I found the traditional uses and pharmacological activities interesting enough to cause me to research these plants further. I like the fact that many of the plants discussed are common food plants and I was not aware of the medicinal values of them. I would recommend that anyone, either scientist or layperson, interested in furthering their knowledge in this area purchase this book. I would think that any scientist interested in this field would certainly want this book as an addition to their reference library.
Very disappointing.......1999-04-15
As someone working actively in the field of phytotherapies, I was extremely disappointed when this bbok landed on my desk by our research library - a waste of budget to say the least. The depth of each plant reviewed is on the whole well done, however, Europe as a land mass let alone a group of exciting people, does not appear to exist for this FDA author. The introductory preface clearly identifies that the author is not in tune with real global herbal medicine. Only 27 plants are reviewed, and the choice is bizzare and incoherent. Don't bother with it - there are far better books available!
