5 out of 5 stars Excelent Resouce for Weight Loss Surgery.......2007-10-08

At almost a year out from my Gastric Bypass Surgery, I can attest to how helpful and true this book is. Paula Peck not only talks about the physical experience and process of the surgery, but also addresses the emotional changes which many people experience. The book is mostly geared towards women, as that is her experience and women constitute a greater portion of Gastric Bypass patients.

Peck talks about how scary it can be when you realize that you are hungry again. She talks about Body Dismorphia: how even though the scale says a dramatically lower number, in your head, you still think you weigh what you did when you started. She talks about ways in which she battled this and learned to see her body as it actually is.

Paula Peck explores so many of the issues that I myself experienced that if I could only recommend one book to a friend about to have Gastric Bypass Surgery, this would be that book.

3 out of 5 stars Exodus from Obesity.......2007-08-22

I found this book to be a big disappointment. Just not what I expected or needed.

3 out of 5 stars Best read pre-op.......2007-08-21

Book detailing the author's journey before and after gastric bypass surgery with tips and hints for each stage of the journey from pre-op to years post-op. I was not very impressed with the book, to be honest. The author's writing style is rather boring, and much of the advice in it is very basic and seems to primarily relate to the pre-op and immediate post-op stages--so the title seems a bit misleading. I also felt that some of it was not very good advice, based on what I've learned from years of my own research and my own experience. The author makes a lot of assumptions that everyone who is morbidly obese and/or has the surgery does so for similar reasons and has the same problems. I guess I just could not relate to much of her own personal story and felt that it was too simplistic to be very beneficial. Perhaps if I had read it pre-op instead of eight months after my own surgery I might have felt differently, but for someone who's already gone through most of the process, much of the advice and observations weren't that helpful. I felt that the section dealing with "long-term" success was much shorter and less developed than I thought it would be, and that's really what I was looking for based on the title of this book.

5 out of 5 stars Loving-Kindness For The Obese.......2007-08-07

Exodus From Obesity keeps its promise. I am not obese, but count many who suffer from obesity among my family and friends. I read Exodus From Obesity because I wanted to understand their illness. I wanted to offer more than sympathy and well meant, but ignorant encouragement as they launched into their next fad diet or exercise program. What I discovered was a wealth of solid nutritional science leavened by psychological insight and Ms. Peck's abundant wit and affection. All addiction is nourished by loneliness, Exodus From Obesity offers escape from this prison, doing so with compassion and loving-kindness. For spouses and family of the obese, Exodus From Obesity provides a framework for understanding and supporting loved ones who suffer from the illness. For the obese, it is a game plan toward building a fuller, more joyful life. Escape From Obesity is a siren song to return to the real joys of living.

5 out of 5 stars Encouragement.......2007-04-23

This book was more than I had expected it to be. It was a fun read and helped me feel "normal" in a world where I struggled with weight loss. I recommend this read to anyone who is undergoing or will undergo weight loss surgery as a learning tool.

Book Description

At 278 pounds, Susan Maria Leach couldn't fit into a roller coaster seat, couldn't tie a bathrobe around herself, couldn't even ride with her husband on the back of his Harley. Enough was enough. Susan underwent gastric bypass weight loss surgery. Now Susan weighs in at a mere 135 pounds. Her book, Before & After, is the story of her incredible journey from being too big to enjoy her life, to being able to truly enjoy life to its fullest.

Now Susan can fit into that roller coaster seat, completely tie that robe, and ride on the back of her husband's Harley.

More than one hundred thousand people had weight loss surgery in 2003, and as those pounds continue to drop, the number of people opting for the surgery continues to rise.

Part memoir and part cookbook, Before & After includes a foreword by Susan's surgeon, comments from a nutritionist, and a section on frequently asked questions. It is an intimate account of Susan's own transformation, as well as a universal guide for those who have undergone or are considering the procedure.

After her own success, Susan participated in support groups for weight loss surgery patients. There, she discovered that people had as many questions about life after surgery as they had about the operation itself. Before & After answers those questions and many more. An accomplished home cook and longtime culinary enthusiast, Susan quickly became known as the "lady with the recipes."

Determined not to give up good food and a flexible lifestyle, Susan worked hard to develop recipes that meet her nutritional requirements, yet are delicious and satisfying for her, her family, and her guests. The 100 recipes -- which include everything from Roasted Salmon with Mango Salsa and Italian Meatballs to Belgian Chocolate Cheesecake and Lemon Meringue Pie -- make about four servings, but each comes with a measured serving for WLS people along with a calorie/carb/fat/protein count. Susan has recipes for every step of the way, from tastes-like-the-real-thing milk shakes for those first post-op days to an entire Thanksgiving menu.

Before & After is a journal of Susan's own inspirational story, where she shares her ups and downs, her tips and techniques, but mostly it's a book about hope for anyone who has a serious weight problem.

4 out of 5 stars Gives Readers A First-Hand Insight To Bariatric Surgery.......2007-10-07

I was given a copy of this book by my sister about four months after I had RNY surgery. While I do not do much cooking and did not find the recipes of much use, I did find the book very entertaining and I was certainly able to relate to many of the things mentioned. My wife is Czech and prepares many Czech dishes for me that have proven to be more than adequate with respect to providing the necessary nutrition (as corroborated by my blood work); that and the fact that she does not allow me to do much of anything in the kitchen is why I have not found the author's recipes to be of much use.

As an engineer and one that loves to torture data, the one thing I would like to have seen in the book is more data and/or possibly a few graphs, but then again, I have kept my own statistics so I can see both the living results and the post op tortured data. Since May 2, 2007, I have personally realized a 117 lb weight loss after having RNY surgery. Hey, maybe I should write a book about this too, it could be fun.

Anyway, this book is a fun read. I started it at 11:00pm and could not put it down for over an hour. When I woke up, I found myself wanting to finish reading it and I did - at least the story part as I skipped through the recipe section. It is worth reading if for no other reason than to learn about some of the feelings and experiences you might have if you choose to have bariatric surgery, or if you just want to understand what someone that has had the surgery is going through.

3 out of 5 stars Before and After: Living and Eating Well After Weight Loss Surgery.......2007-09-14

This book was disappointing because it was excerpt of the Authors diary and really not as informative as I thought it would be. I did enjoy checking out the recipes for possible future use. I thought it would be more indepth.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring!!.......2007-08-01

This is a very honest and real account of surgery and recovery. Recipes are delicious and most are fairly easy, even for a non-cook!

1 out of 5 stars Not real practical information for those who have had surgery........2007-06-22

Her website is better.

This book is more like a memoir not really having anything to deal with eating well after surgery.

It's mostly about the fun things she could do/did experience after losing weight.

4 out of 5 stars Worth Reading.......2007-06-11

I really liked this book for the diary portions and information. I didn't love the recipes as much, and I love good photos of items in a cookbook, so that was all that was missing. I certainly recommend the book, I have used it as a reference, so that is saying alot.

    Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Negative Slant on WLS.......2007-08-14

This book focuses so much on the negative of gastric bypass surgery that it makes me wonder if the author's research was up to date with the current procedures, death and complication rates. This is the first book that while claiming objectivity was actually negatively slanted. The personal stories were horrifying. For a more objective and thorough book I would suggest "WLS for Dummies".

1 out of 5 stars This book should be updated..............2007-04-05

I am a post RNY person and this book while offers some different perspectives and yes, some very scary personal experiences from a few people doesn't do the surgery justice. Everyone is different and while all of us go through our own experiences w/ the surgery, going in (if you did your research) knows the pros & cons. For many of us the pros outweigh the cons a 100 to 1! It is a very viable and safer now than ever before option for many of us who are dealing w/ obesity. It's hard for me to appreciate such negative-ness about something that while yes, it's not a quick fix and yes,you better be aware of the problems that could result ,you are most responsible for the outcome. You can't do what you did that caused wt. gain, you have to change. That's what it's all about! Hundreds of people have had really great results and live a much more productive life than they had previously! My personal journey is mine, no one else's. So to yours will be if you go this route. It's 2007 and the medical changes and updates and experience grows daily! My personal opinion is this book doesn't do gastric bypass justice in 2007. I'm a happier, healthier and thinner person for it! There are much better books than this out there that cover the pros and cons, save your money on this one!

4 out of 5 stars Scary, but very informative. :).......2007-03-16

I read the book in only a few days (it really kept my interest). There was a lot of facts to digest, but it was definely what I was looking for.

    4 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2006-08-29

I thought this books was great, however I did not like how it put down Carnie Wilson basically saying that she makes WLS look glamorous, obviously they have not read her books to see she dealt with the same problems & emotions that most WLS patients deal with.

1 out of 5 stars Very poor resource.......2005-06-04

I bought the book because I am considering weight loss surgery and am trying to educate myself about all aspects of the surgery. The author of this book reportedly had the surgery in 1999. For someone who had the experience, she is very negative and only gave negative view points and negative feed-back from people who had bad experiences. I know from talking to many people that this can be a very positive and life-saving adventure. I would not advise wasting money on this book. I have read six books so far, and they were all better than this one and much more upbeat and positive!

    Book Description

You asked for it! Here it is. A condensed version of my philosophy on maintaining successful weight loss after weight loss surgery. This book is small yet worth it's weight in information and ease of understanding. It is self-published and originally created to introduce the coming book to interested publishers. Due to popular response, I am making this "primer" available to you.

This publication is a "primer" to a larger more in depth book due to come out in December of 2002.

I highly recommend this "easy to read" text to anyone interested in gleaning the "Basics" of my approach to successful weight loss after surgery.

This "Primer" is designed to provide new insight in to your own weight loss journey and inspire you to continue seeking out greater knowledge.

So many of my clients are hesitant to pick up my recommended reading because of the size or depth of the books I encourage.

This "Primer" is written with that client in mind.

I have put great care behind offering a book that will not intimidate the most discerning client -47 pages packed with quick and easy to understand lessons on weight loss success. It is filled with enough substance to create -even inspire, the most reluctant of readers.

    Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Too Little Substance, Too Much Space.......2002-07-04

As with her other book, "The Magic Pill," this book has one basic and useful premise. That insight is interesting, but not worth the price of the book. The problem is that the material for one paragraph has been turned into an entire book.

Everything I've said in my review of "The Magic Pill" applies here. Ms. Holtzclaw would not have passed my junior English class. Moreover, as someone who has since had RNY and dealt with the issues surrounding it, I don't find her premise to be at all universally applicable. If you want one good guide to weight loss surgery, there are better choices.

1 out of 5 stars This book was totally useless to me.......2002-06-27

I bought this book pre-op, and at 6 months out, I can truthfully say that it was a complete and utter waste of money. The author seems to believe that all morbidly obese people are completely [messed up] in the head and losing the "crutch" of overeating is going to cause all our demons to come surging forth to wreak havoc. Well, sorry to disappoint you, Ms. Holtzclaw, but the only demon plaguing me was a metabolism that was [messed] up from years of yoyo dieting. OF COURSE this is not brain surgery...DUH (and by the way, I am hard pressed to imagine a more condescending and insulting title for a book like this). But I've got news: most of us don't NEED brain surgery; what we need is a tool that will keep our bodies from sabotaging all our efforts to lose weight and keep it off. Gastric bypass has given me that, and the only emotional challenge I have faced is adjusting to my success. (And believe it or not, pre-ops, that IS a challenge, albeit a fun one. *grin*) To anyone planning to have weight loss surgery, my recommendation is to give this book a pass and save the money to help pay for the new clothes you're going to need in a few months.

1 out of 5 stars DO NOT READ THIS IF YOU ARE PRE-OP.......2002-03-29

I have purchased and read many books on the topic of Gastric Bypass surgery this is by far the worst. I would strongly advise you against reading this if you are Pre-Op, as it will make you feel like a complete failure. I felt like I should have been going to a 12 step program instead of getting Gastric Bypass surgery. I feel very bad for anyone else that might become infected with this authors "Glass is always empty" thought process. Please do yourself and some trees a favor and DO NOT READ OR BUY THIS BOOK!

    5 out of 5 stars Transformation.......2002-03-17

The cultural mainstream has become petrified by clinging to fixed ideas and rigid patterns of weight loss behavior. This author is a member of the creative minority who will carry on the process of challenge and response. This small book introduces it's readers to how our emotions and our physical body inter-relates. It's a great beginners guide to this author's journey through weight loss and spiritual enlightenment.

5 out of 5 stars Preview of The Magic Pill.......2002-03-17

I read this one but preferred the final product. I highly suggest purchasing The Magic Pill and bypassing this "preview" version. I understand this preview was only a sneak peek into the book The Magic Pill.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Great resource.......2004-08-11

I work in a medical library and am scheduled for my gastric bypass soon. I have done tons of research of both consumer information and clinical information. I found this book to be very honest and to be very much in line with the program at our hospital.
This book may be too simple for someone who has done quite a lot of clinical research but it is perfect for the person just starting out their research or without a medical background.
I am recommending that it be purchased for the our patrons.

    2 out of 5 stars Incomplete Information.......2004-07-31

I was extremely disappointed in this book. I have done hours of research on all types of Bariatric surgery and this book is one of the least informative. Gastric Bypass is hown as the magic answer. Easy, simple, and the only way. In reality this is far from the truth. Gastric Bypass is a huge decision for a person to make, and one that should not be made unless the patient is adequately informed.
Specifically the sections covering other surgical options (duodenal switch, gastric banding, etc.) are blatantly biased. While I realize this book is geared toward Gastric Bypass, that is no excuse to give false or incomplete information on other surgeries. Also, the sections on Gastric Bypass itself is very glossed over and makes it seem as though it will be a cure as opposed to a tool for weight loss.
There are so many other informative books out there...this just isn't one of them.
